PREFA CE
Hong Kong experienced a multitude of turbulence in 2019, while gloom and uncertainty cloud the whole city. Young as you are, one may question, “what else can I do for this society?” The editor, like fellow readers, holds no answer. But allow me to give you a story. Ten years ago, eight youngsters learnt about the concept of “international workcamps”, which essentially means volunteering while travelling. Among these eight were an art administrator, a magazine reporter, a civil servant, a hedge fund manager, an auditor and a teacher, all with different backgrounds and skill sets, but shared the same curiosity about the world and vision for society. They thought, what are the possibilities for “travelling volunteers”? Just like that, they founded VolTra, an organisation that helps people experience volunteer work while travelling. It has been ten years since. Over the last ten years, VolTra has changed its logo, user interface, service reach and methods. Even our vision and mission have been renewed at the 10th anniversary. As we walked, slowly there appeared a path, and far we have come without us realising. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and all change comes from within us. One of our major attempts in past years was the “Jockey Club Glocal Hero Action” programme, now in its fourth edition. It has inspired participants to complete a series of community missions, initiate their own community projects and take part in local and overseas workcamps. By engaging in other communities, participants develop empathy. Gradually, the programme has grown, matured and benefited over 5000 people. We wish that the international friendship and diversified teams that stemmed from it will continue to grow and evolve like the early VolTra, bringing participants to heights they have never imagined. Youth is not an original sin. It is your chance to set sail and initiate changes.

One team member in Voluntemotion was once a ‘McRefugee’. When struggling to feed himself, he questioned the equity in Hong Kong society. After some site visits, the team decided to help and destigmatise the homeless. Voluntemotion understands that psychological integration is the most difficult to achieve, and that preaching does little to change the way people think. Therefore we chose to film a real social experiment and reveal the discrimination and negligence they face.
“Thank you for caring about us” is what we hear from the homeless most often in guided tours. Although there were only a few of us with limited supplies, the warmth they received and grateful smiles we saw were priceless. During the activity we heard many bleak stories, like a mother who continued to stay on the streets even when her son is now able to support her financially. We were very touched to see her still working hard to survive, and her big smile in our pictures.
There has been great response after the video was released. Some found it touching. Others told us they used to label and even fear the homeless, but felt their helplessness from the video. They would offer a helping hand to the homeless if given a chance in future.

Text & Photo: The Divine Team

In the old times, enrolling in a university was everybody’s dream, but not one that could be easily achieved. “The Divine Team” arranged an opportunity for a group of active elderly to experience university life with the help of some university students. As the students introduced the ups and downs of their university days, a priceless exchange was achieved across the two generations. Activities were held in classrooms of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where the elderly entered different academic departments (i.e. groups) to experience the “Five Essentials of University Life” through simple tasks led by volunteer group leaders. Afterwards, they took graduation photos in graduation gowns prepared by our team. Not only did the elderly live their university dream, but also established a good relationship with the young participants. Many of them have stayed in touch ever since!

Road to the World
In the globalised world today, travelling is unprecedentedly easy. Though also due to information explosion people have seen enough of their destinations online to actually observe during travelling, and they are only seeing the world through a lens. Can overseas workcamps change this trend?

Text & Photo: Vincy
Before the trip, I have heard numerous rumours about the country. Some said that Pyongyang is like a big movie studio with actors everywhere. Some friends told me North Korea was too dangerous to visit. But how could I judge someone else’s life without first witnessing it? During the packed three-day visit, the most unforgettable was an exchange with local junior high school students. To be honest, I first went into the discussion with prejudice. I avoided topics I thought they would not understand and filtered sensitive issues. However, during our exchange, I discovered that they also watch Indian movies, and know some football stars such as Argentine player Messi. I realised that not only was North Korea eager to paper over the crack, but I was also misguided by my prejudice. The impression of an autocratic and impoverished North Korea has limited me from properly exploring it.

Mexico First Impressions
Text & Photo: Alison

When people think about Mexico, what comes to mind is usually drug dealers, corruption and robbery. Only when I learnt about Mexico through the local people did I realise my prejudice. I very often understand a place with information selected and filtered by other people. There might actually be corruption in Mexico. But when I tried to experience it firsthand, I discovered its charm. Mexico is actually the birthplace of Caesar salad, chocolate and the famous tequila. The most astonishing find of all was how friendly the locals were. They kept treating us to tequila, taught us to dance, and we hung out on the beach together. I felt in my heart that Mexico is not scary at all, but a warm and lovely place. In the age of overwhelming information, we cannot avoid distorted facts from all around. If we could look beyond biased messages and open our hearts and minds to experience, not only could we see the world more clearly, but also in the most interesting and colourful way.

Waiting for an Identity Far from Home
I visited the Red Cross Centre for Asylum Seekers at Tournai, Belgium, and experienced firsthand the complications of the European immigration policies and the refugee crisis. The Centre was housing over 900 asylum seekers who have fled Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq and Syria for various reasons. In this trip, we volunteers lived with the asylum seekers and supported operations of the Centre by helping organise events. This is the perfect opportunity to connect with and listen to people from less fortunate parts of the world. I have understood that war, religious extremism and political conflicts have brought pain to the people. I have also come to appreciate the importance of citizenship. Sadly, the Centre was filled with people with no national identity, forced to restart their lives in foreign countries. Immigration was a challenging but necessary way out of their nations in turmoil. This volunteering trip has enabled me to experience a multicultural environment, with both volunteers and centre residents coming from all parts of the world. Working and communicating in such an international environment is a valuable experience to me, and have gratified my mind and faith.

Arriving at the station on the first day, the leaders took me and other volunteers, coming from Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, Africa and Hong Kong, to the Paralympic venues. The leaders were all humourous. Some have even participated in the Paralympics for years. Duties of the workcamp include getting the venues ready, assisting disabled athletes in their commutes and competitions, ceremony operations and so on. One of the special events we facilitated was Bocce, a sporting event from France requiring minimal strength and particularly suitable for Paralympic athletes. Halfway through the workcamp, our days became exhausting. All I wanted was to catch up on sleep. However, at the award ceremony, when I saw the athletes’ excitement at the announcement, and their families’ pride, I finally understood the importance of the Paralympics to them. Even the forth-place-winner was exhilarated with joy!

Ceci, who majored in Educational Psychology in university, loves working with kids, and have discovered the opportunity to spend her summer with Greenlandic children via VolTra workcamps. Although she hasn’t done any volunteering work before and didn’t know the conditions at the workcamp, Ceci committed to the ice cold challenge. Local organisers of this workcamp hoped to expose children living in remote areas to international volunteers, so as to broaden their world views and establish value systems, to counteract the lack of information flow due to delayed introduction of the Internet. Ceci participated in the workcamp with 16 other volunteers from around the world, taking turns preparing activities in groups and serving 40 to 100 local kids. Before the workcamp began, Ceci heard from local people that many children did not receive proper education, and faced problems of gambling, domestic violence and alcoholic parents. Local summer camps had not only brought joy to the children, but also facilitated their daily lives. For instance, volunteers had discovered domestic violence in a family through chatting with the child who had developed suicidal thoughts. Fortunately they reached local authorities in time and prevented the situation from worsening. When asked about expectations before departure, Ceci put ‘interaction’ before ‘nature’ and ‘children’. “One has to be proactive to try things out. A workcamp does not yield experiences by default. If I isolate myself, think too much and do little, the lack of interaction could kill possibilities.” said Ceci. Workcamps are all about teamwork, and it is a lesson to learn adapting to how different people work. For example, during lunch time, some would settle down the early kids, some would plan activities ahead with the spare time while others would enjoy their time outdoors. The workcamp provided just the platform for distinct people to cooperate.

In the summer of 2013, I experienced two unique weeks with volunteers from the USA, Thailand, South Korea and Hong Kong, at the Long Valley wetlands near Sheung Shui. We lived in steaming farm houses and worked everyday from sunrise, harvesting, threshing and drying rice, even fighting the storm. At dusk we cooked, played and exchanged stories. It might be the summer when I sweated the most, but also laughed the most. Both jokes and conflicts were commonplace among such different individuals. A Korean girl nearly burnt us down while cooking by placing the rice-cooker directly onto the stove. Luckily a volunteer from Thailand rushed in and saved the day. An African American boy was quiet at first. But once he learnt and fell in love with a local card game “Seven Stages of a Pig”. he wouldn’t stop asking us to play with him.
Another Korean girl wrapped herself up in the fields everyday so not to get sunburnt. Yet she was my favourite camp mate, for she was funny and sportsmanlike, honouring her promise to kiss a frog after losing a game. The workcamp left me with unforgettable experience and knowledge. Even Mr Kan, who was serious and giving us orders all the time, played cards with us in the fields at sunset. We really have worked hard and played hard. This is the charm of a workcamp. It keeps people coming, enjoying, and gaining valuable experience for their lives. On 27 December 2019, after running for 15 years by the Conservancy Association, the Long Valley Eco-Rice programme had to end and give way to a government eco park. We shall see how this piece of precious land will end up in the government’s hands.

We heard VolTra was once a “shipbuilding factory”, Specialised in large far-reaching ships – International Friend-SHIP! The ship of VolTra has taken more than 4000 people. It might have taken you to Long Valley, sweating under the sun; It might have taken you to Mongolia, star-gazing without showering for a week; It might have taken you somewhere on Earth, singing youthful and free songs…... This “ship” of ours has created shared memories that might not be entertaining but for sure unforgettable. Therefore, a group of passionate past VolTra volunteers initiated the VolTra Glocal Citizen Club (GCC), hoping to connect volunteers and ex-campers, to dig into local culture while establishing an international worldview,
