This challenging course will once again be a perfect home for what is sure to be a week of the finest golf featuring many of the greatest players on The European Tour. A championship such as this is the perfect opportunity not only for us to showcase our values, our products and our brand, but also to engage with key customers and clients. elcome to the fourth edition of the Volvo Golf Champions, a tournament that celebrates the players who have enjoyed success on The European Tour International Schedule over the past 12 months, as well as those players with ten or more career wins. After ending 2013 in the KwaZula-Natal Province of South Africa four weeks ago, it gives us great pleasure to return to this magnificent region to begin this new calendar year. Since its inception three years ago, the Volvo Golf Champions has acquired an impressive roll call of champions, with Englishman Paul Casey victorious at the inaugural event, followed by South Africans Branden Grace in 2012, and Louis Oosthuizen last year. With an increased prize fund of $4,000,000, this prestigious title promises to be even more sought-after this year as many of our leading players hope to start 2014 with a victory. Volvo have been a loyal and generous sponsor of The European Tour for more than 25 years, and this substantial prize fund rise of more than 50 per cent is yet another example of their commitment to both this event and golf in general. Oosthuizen unearths a gem of a performance Buoyed by winning a shiny new Volvo Compact Excavator EC55B in the Amateur-Pro Team Competition on the Friday, Louis Oosthuizen wrapped up a memorable victory at last year’s Volvo Golf Champions thanks to a stunning final round 66.

OME favourite Louis Oosthuizen clinched his sixth European Tour title by overhauling Scott Jamieson’s overnight lead with seven birdies and a solitary bogey in his six under par closing round. “It was a great day,” he said. “Starting out behind, you don’t have that much pressure, so I went out with the intention of making loads of birdies. When I got to the ninth I was one behind and then the crowd really got into it. By the time I got to the 12th, I was leading by one and it was great to see them so pumped up.” Oosthuizen dropped a shot on the difficult 16th – a hole he hadn’t birdied all week – and then closed with two pars to post the clubhouse target at 16 under. Earlier in the day

“Obviously, winning is a great start to the year, and I’m going to enjoy that Excavator on my farm, I can tell you that!” – Louis Oosthuizen Jamieson had began strongly with birdies on holes 3 and 4 but he then gave them back with a double bogey on the par 4 fifth. He couldn’t raise his game over the following holes and then dropped another stroke on the 16th to fall two back of Oosthuizen, who was safely in the clubhouse. The Scot launched an aggressive drive down the short, closing hole leaving himself with a chip for eagle to force a play-off. But as the ball rolled towards the hole it came to rest on line but agonizingly short. “Louis’ a Major Champion - there’s no shame in losing to him,” conceded Jamieson, who had won just a few weeks earlier at the Nelson Mandela Championship. “The double bogey was a kick in the teeth, but I had tons of chances and couldn’t take
them. I gave it my all, but it wasn’t to be.” For Oosthuizen the win took him to a career-high of fourth on the Official World Rankings but a series of niggling injuries throughout the 2013 campaign curtailed his ambitions of moving further up the table and winning more tournaments. “On the whole, last year was a bit of a struggle,” said Oosthuizen, who finished 47th on The 2013 Race to Dubai. “It started well with the victory here at the Volvo Golf Champions but I wasn’t really swinging it the way I wanted to and that was because of an old neck problem from 2005 – a whiplash injury. “At the start of the year it came back and it made me swing quite differently. At the US Open I injured a muscle in my leg while hitting out of

the rough and then at The Open at Muirfield I had to withdraw after eight holes because I couldn’t walk on it. “I took a few months off and returned to play the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland and then The Presidents Cup – which was a lot of fun – and now I can’t wait to start the 2014 season.” If Oosthuizen is to successfully defend his title this week he’s going to have to overcome the cream of The European Tour, with the likes of past champion Branden Grace teeing it up alongside Padraig Harrington, Matteo Manassero, Miguel Angel Jiménez, David Howell, Thomas Björn and 2013 Rookie of the Year Peter Uihlein to name just a few candidates. Twenty year old Italian Manassero collected the biggest title of his

fledgling career to date at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last year with a play-off victory over Simon Khan and Marc Warren. Manassero has been a regular record breaker in his career, having become the youngest ever winner on The European Tour in 2010 at the Castello Masters. His win at Wentworth made him the youngest winner of the tournament. At the other end of the scale, evergreen Spaniard Jiménez broke his own record as The European Tour’s oldest winner when he won his 20th Tour title at the Hong Kong Open in December last year. Björn remains a fierce competitor with 15 wins on The European Tour, including last year’s NedBank Golf Challange and the Omega European Masters, while Harrington will be hoping a good performance can kickstart his 2014 campaign and move himself into contention for a Ryder Cup spot at Gleneagles. The Irishman admitted he got his scheduling wrong in 2013 and is fully prepared for the new season, having worked hard with his coach Pete Cowen over the last few months. Young American Uihlein won his first title as a professional at the Madeira Islands Open while

olvo runs three prestigious professional tournaments – the Volvo Golf Champions, the Volvo China Open and the Volvo World Match Play Championship – as well as a hugely popular event for club and corporate golfers, the Volvo World Golf Challenge. As golf and The European Tour has gone global, so too has exposure to Volvo’s brand and products via its long-term support of golf. This week’s Volvo Golf Champions is the curtain-raiser for The European Tour in 2014 and is just the fourth staging of the company’s innovative and cutting edge new event for proven winners. It is a true tournament of champions and features only the best of the best. Last year it was won by South African
former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and he joined compatriot Branden Grace and Paul Casey as winners of this prestigious event. Whilst this may be a relatively new championship, Volvo’s involvement with professional golf goes back a quarter of a century, to May 1988. Since the inaugural Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth, Volvo has enjoyed an unbroken and ever-stronger tie with The European Tour.
Flagship Tournaments The company’s most recent Tour event, the Volvo World Match Play Championship last May, was its 130th title sponsorship and 80th European Tour event. Over the years this has included flagship tournaments such as the Volvo

PGA Championship and the Volvo Masters, as well as title sponsorship of the Volvo Order of Merit. When the company first joined forces with The European Tour, there was a seven-month season which was almost exclusively in Europe. The total prize fund for the whole year was less than €10million. Now, the yearlong season spans the globe with prize money of over €125million. Volvo has played a major role in this and raised the bar significantly in event production and presentation, introducing services such as courtesy cars, players’ lounges and professional practice facilities which are today taken as standard. Having established its reputation as the clear leader in golf sponsorship in Europe, Volvo then became the first western brand to actively engage with golf in China. The 1995 launch of the Volvo China Open, the country’s national open championship, saw the start of an important

relationship which continues to flourish. Indeed, along with the Volvo China Junior Match Play Championship, Volvo has celebrated more than 50 title sponsorships in this hugely important and fast-growing market alone. Innovation The company’s third professional event is the Volvo World Match Play Championship. 2013 saw the 48th staging of this iconic tournament and its star-studded field produced a most worthy champion in Graeme McDowell – a true match play specialist with a superlative

In keeping with Volvo’s positive approach to innovation and taking golf into new territories, this great championship was played at a very exciting new destination, Thracian Cliffs in Bulgaria. O other company within the sports business is revered quite like IMG. Founded over 50 years ago by the late Mark McCormack the sports, entertainment and media business has a history like no other. Formerly known as the International Management Group, (IMG) the company was famously founded by McCormack on a handshake with golfing legend Arnold Palmer in 1960. A lawyer by profession, McCormack quickly added Jack Nicklaus and South Africa’s most famous golfer, Gary Player to his stable. In recognising the commercial potential of sport, McCormack truly became the father of the sports marketing industry. Through promoting Palmer, Nicklaus and Player as the ‘Big Three’ of golf, he substantially increased their off-course earnings while growing the IMG business with special ‘made
for television’ events, built around this dynamic trio. After a few years McCormack expanded into tennis using the same successful formula to hasten the growth of tennis and its marketing appeal as it entered the so called ‘open-era’ in the 70s. IMG’s client list over the years has been enriched with some of the biggest names in sport and later many from the world of celebrity. The list includes the likes of Tiger Woods, Björn Borg, Chris Evert, Pete Sampras, Michael Schumacher, Greg Norman, Charles Barkley and model Kate Moss. IMG has also handled special projects for Margaret Thatcher, Mikhail Gorbachev and Pope John Paul II. When McCormack died in 2003, the business was soon acquired by Ted Forstmann’s private equity firm

STAR FOR LIFE AND VOLVO A Winning Partnership Screened all over the world and featuring the most successful golfers on The European Tour, the Volvo Golf Champions raises awareness not just of Volvo but of Star For Life, a hugely important charitable organisation whose aim is to make sure that those who are less fortunate are not forgotten.

OUNDED in 2005, Star For Life is the official charity of the Volvo Golf Champions and is a South African registered not-for-profit organisation. Originally launched as a schoolbased HIV and AIDS prevention programme, it provides young people with both the information and the motivation to make the right choices that keeps them healthy. Now about to enter its tenth year, it has taken this mission further by instilling attitude and behaviour that enable young people to fulfil their dreams of a better future. Based in Hluhluwe, about 150 miles north of Durban, the charity has been successful across its home region of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as further afield. The organisation is now involved in four main programmes: Health and
Education; Star For Life Skills; Star For Life Sports; and Star For Life Arts and Culture. At the heart of their work is the schools programme. It focuses not just on health issues but also on increasing personal empowerment and selfesteem.
Volvo’s Involvement There is a commitment to education and to reducing the numbers of early school-leavers by offering a comprehensive knowledge to everything connected with HIV and AIDS, as well as a physically and morally sound approach to relationships. Volvo has been involved since 2007, and there is now an even stronger link with Star For Life through the charity’s Chairman, Anders Lindblad, who

used to be President of Volvo Group, South Africa. After introducing the two organisations to one another and now, having switched roles, he spends more than half the year working for the charity. He came into his position hoping to attract more sponsors, improve the internal structure and make sure that funding was used in the most correct and efficient manner. This he has achieved, while at the same time seeing Star For Life grow a great deal in a relatively short time. Depending entirely on their supporting companies for the annual funding, which amounts to around R25 million, Lindblad says: “Through Volvo’s sponsorship and their active engagement in Star For Life, we can give our learners the knowledge to protect their health and give them hope for the future.”
The focus on the charity’s school work has also shifted from quantity to quality. By concentrating on its existing school set-ups, where the schools have an intake of an average of 20% new pupils each year, then in a 10-year cycle it will benefit half a million students! Star For Life is a significant corporate social investment project. One of the great attractions in the model is that it is also beneficial to Volvo, who run an apprentice scheme for students moving from education into employment. It offers a bridge to working life for learners for whom university is less attractive and the policy is certainly paying dividends.
Good role models The Star For Life Area Manager for Durban schools, Simingaye Zulu, confirms that the apprentices are good role models for youngsters still in school. “The success of these graduates shows that you can achieve your dreams no matter where you’re coming from,” he says. Not only are these apprentices now graduating with some becoming regular, full-time Volvo employees, but one of the Star For Life entrants under the scheme has even won the
Apprentice Of The Year award. This excellent, win-win situation shows that the relationship between Volvo and Star For Life is extremely healthy. One of the charity’s better-known activities is its very popular Star For Life Choir, largely consisting of students taking a gap year between school and university. As in 2013, they will be making appearances during the week of the Volvo Golf Champions. The choir has been visiting Europe since 2006 and has performed in front of the Swedish Royal Family and high profile events such as a United Nations awards ceremony. Volvo will be donating R10 from the sale of each ticket to Star for Life, and as Per Ericsson, President of Volvo Event Management explains: “Volvo had already been a partner of Star For Life long before we brought the Volvo Golf Champions to South Africa. It was therefore a perfect opportunity for us to help by making it our official charity.” Anders Lindblad believes that to be associated with an event such as the Volvo Golf Champions is extremely beneficial for an organisation such as Star For Life for two good reasons: One is the connection with a global company

such as Volvo and its values of quality, safety and environmental care; the other is that the event itself is prestigious and is followed closely all over the world. The feedback received by Lindblad after the 2013 event at Durban CC was universally positive with everyone enjoying not only the tournament itself but all the surrounding activities such as the Pro-Am, Playing With The Pros and other events both on and off the course. He believes that no-one in South Africa does anything like this and adds, “Star For Life is empowering youth with knowledge to protect their health, and with inspiration to make a better life for themselves. Sterne carded rounds of 63, 65, 68, 64 for a remarkable 27 under par total to win one week after he finished second behind Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
Sterne won his first European Tour title in 2004 at the Open de España and three years later triumphed at the Celtic Manor Wales Open by one stroke. Sterne missed most of 2010 and 2011 because of a back injury, but returned to take sixth place in the 2012 Africa Open despite not playing a competitive round for ten months.

four top tens, including runner-up at the Sicilian Open. He was runner-up twice in 2011 on his way to finishing 89th on The Race to Dubai. In 2009 Wood was named the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year after a superb debut season, the highlight of which was a third place finish at The Open Championship at Turnberry.
