HTML Basics! Dreamed of creating your own website? Or perhaps you aspire to be a social network billionaire someday? Worry not for setting up your own website is fun and easy! Although websites are not that hard to make, it is not as easy as, say, making a poster on Photoshop or Illustrator. Websites, in its most basic form, is made out of bunch of codes called HTML or Hypertext Markup Language. Whoa! Hold on, you mean that gibberish I learned in high school can make me a Mark Zuckerberg!? Yes and no. See, HTML provides you the frame of the house, but it doesn’t provide you the paint and furnishings. It will take pages and countless of tutorials explaining the other two basic foundations of web design (CSS and Javascript). For this tutorial, we will tackle basic HTML tags only in order to set up your very own first ever website. Excited? I hope you do! In order to learn more about HTML and other aspects of web design, it is recommended to visit some good sites that teaches you the proper syntax and basics in coding HTML. Here are some of the few sites that offer rich and exhaustive tutorials: • • • •

http://codecademy.com http://codeavengers.com http://htmlgoodies.com http://htmldog.com
web design Let’s start! In coding HTML, you have to know series of tags on which each has a corresponding function. Let’s start with simple steps:
1 2
Open your favorite text editor (e.g. Notepad) and type the following (mind the indentation; for easier reading):
<!DOCTYPE HTML> <head> <title>My First Website!</title> </head> <body> <h1>Hello World!</h1> <p>This is my first sentence!</p> </body>
3
That’s it? Yep! That’s it. Save your work as .html and try opening the file with a browser of your choice. Voila! Your first website :)
What’s that? You demand an explanation? You’ve been duped? I told you this is your first website, not your first FANCY website. But before we throw fists at each other, let’s review: <!DOCTYPE html>........... tells the browser that this is an HTML file <head> & </head>......... contains meta information like the title <title> & </title>.... indicates the title of your website <body> & </body>......... contains the visible part of your site <h1> & </h1>.................. contains the header, you may change it to h2, h3, and so on to get a smaller heading <p> & </p>........................... contains the paragraph text Now that I raised your blood pressure (just kidding), learning HTML needs a lot of practice. But learning HTML is free and can be done online anytime and anywhere as long as you have a PC. Check the links on the left and start learning how to code complex ones :)

The Magic of
Healing Brush
7
photoshop Have you ever thought of wanting to remove some skin blemishes or acne from your photos? Or at least wondered how photo studios manage to make photos more clean and beautiful? If so, then this tool is just right for you! First off, the healing brush tool is used for painting, retouching and repairing images, allowing you to correct imperfections. This tool functions the same way as the clone stamp tool but smarter as it matches the texture, lightning, transparency of the sample pixel to the one being healed.
In making use of this tool, you only need to follow these steps:
1 2 3 4
Select the Healing Brush tool in the Tools Panel under the Spot Healing Brush Tool. Find an area from the image that looks good to you and then Alt +click to sample that area. Place your mouse cursor over the area you want to repair in the picture and drag it in the image. Just repeat the previous steps if necessary, in order to successfully repair and retouch your image.

Trivia! Trivia! Stanley Kubrick

out of 12 movies appear in IMDB’s Top 250 Movies. A legend indeed!
GREEN! --------> His attention to detail is legendary. In his movie ‘Dr. Strangelove’, he decided that the top of the table inside the war room covered in green baize, very much looking like a poker table. Which would be totally reasonable, if the film weren’t shot entirely in black and white!
The shoot for the movie ‘The Shining’ was originally scheduled to take 17 weeks, but the director’s insane
perfectionism
stretched
it into a full year. Why? Well, remember the classic scene where
He refused to talk about his movies on set as he was directing them and never watched them when they were completed. Talk about not looking at explosions! *Facts gathered by Jaime Esmeralda

VIDEO GRADING When it comes to videography, video grading is a field that requires new set of skills. The person who cuts and matches the clips is called the video editor while the person who grades or color the video is called the video colorist. Why is video grading important? The answer is for artâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sake. Like paintings it has many mediums and colors which directs the audience view on how they should feel. Looking at the movies, for example if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an action movie usually the grade is blue-ish or orange-ish try checking Inception, Batman, Transformers, and many movies. It will lead the audience to the mood the director wants to make them feel. When it comes to video grading there are many ways of doing it. There are also a lot of programs that would help the video colorist do it faster. Some might prefer that everything is done in one video editing suite like Premiere or Sony Vegas but a video colorist should know other ways in order to be more versatile.
15
video vsco films VSCO Films is known for its film-like presets for Adobe Lightroom. But did you know that it can also be applied to videos? Yes! The only catch in using Lightroom is that you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do non-linear editing and have to export each graded video out of Lightroom first before you can edit them. Website: http://vsco.co/film
MAGIC BULLET Magic Bullet Looks is a standalone software dedicated for applying customized video grading to videos. The downside with this software is that its price is hefty and it might be a no-go for amateur/beginner video colorists. This software includes a variety of film/look presets . Website: http://redgiant.com
PREMIERE Adobe Premiere also offers tools that would help the colorist achieve his/her desired color it is just kinda complex compared to the 3rd party tools available and it requires practice and basic knowledge of applying color theory to videos.

SCREENWRITING 101 Behind every good film is a well-written script. There are creative and technical limits when you go ‘indie’ and decided to “wing” it on the fly. Brilliant film sequences oftentimes need deliberate planning or carefully constructed atmosphere that makes it captivating for the audience. An idea might be forgotten but a well-kept script isn’t. It is important to have a written script to ensure that each people in your production knows what they will be doing. Plus, it makes your shooting schedules organized and well-coordinated.There is an importance when it comes to formatting the script to make it readable and easy to understand among the production crew. In this tutorial, you will learn basic scriptwriting. Knowing how to make one in a standard format will ensure that a producer will take the time to read your script. Sloppiness is not an excuse when presenting ideas and so is script!
REMINDERS
17
Scripts are usually written in an 8.5 x 11” paper.
Right margin is between 0.5” and 0.1” long while l eft is between 1.2” and 1.6”.
Top and bottom margins are between 0.5” and 0.1” long.
Font should be Courier 12 pt. A page with this font = 1 minute of screentime.
creativity SCRIPT ELEMENTS Slugline
. First and foremost, the slugline or heading describes the setting of a scene. It is usually begins with “INT.” or “EXT.” that means ‘interior’ and exterior’ respectively. It is then followed by the description of the setting and time in all caps. (e.g. “INT. ABANDONED HOUSE - MORNING”)
Action
. After the slugline, a paragraph that describes the setting or whatever’s happening on screen is put into the script. Take note that it should be in active voice and tense should be in present form.
Character Name
. When a character speaks, their names is clearly presented in the script. It should be in all caps and indented 3.5” from the left margin.
Dialog. Dialog format is used when a character speaks. It is indented 2.5” from the left margin.
Parenthetical
. Parenthetical describes the attitudes or action direction of an actor. It is written a line after the Character Name.
Do note that this isn’t all the format guidelines of a script. It includes more like camera angle, meta information, and transitions. However, these are too lengthy and in-depth for this basics tutorial. If you want to learn more on scriptwriting, you may go to this link: http://www.screenwriting.info/

The Exposure TRIANGLE! WITH
AMCEL ONG*
Have you ever taken a photo and it came out dark or maybe a little too bright? Want to know how to get it right on the first try? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s simple! Learn how to properly expose your photos by taking these three things to heart: Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO! *Amcel Ong is a co-owner and head photographer of Catchlight.ph. They did corporate shoots for Nike, Burger Company, Bittersweets, and playFM.
19
photography Shutter Speed The Shutter speed controls how long the light shines through to your sensitive sensor. What does that mean? Fast shutter speed = darker pictures, but a fast shutter also captures motion. Slow shutter speed = more light in, but if your subject is moving, or if you move too much while taking the shot, your photo will be blurry. Example: 1/125 is fast enough to capture strobes or flash bursts, usually used for studio settings. 1/1000 is used for those frozen moment sports shots. Try the 10 to 30 second shutter speeds, for those colorful light streaks or maybe some light painting.
Aperture The Aperture, or “F-stop” is the hole that lets the light into your camera. The bigger it is, the more light will come through. However, big apertures (holes) tend to create shallow depths of field (also known as “bokeh”). To make things simple, big hole: more light, blurry background; small hole: mor e details, less light. The bigger the F-number, the smaller the hole. Example: F/1.8 is a big aperture, usually used for those flattering bokehlicious portraits. F/11 is a small aperture and is usually used for landscapes.
ISO ISO determines how sensitive your camera is to light. The lower the ISO number, the less sensitive it is to the light, while a higher ISO number increases the sensitivity of your camera. ISO settings are usually set to the low due to “image noise” or grain that is produced when using high ISO. Usually, high ISO settings are used when there is very little light available, and low ISO settings when there’s plenty. Example: ISO 100 is used for landscapes, sunny days, and studio settings. ISO 800 is used on dim restaurants.
