WELCOME I

About us The Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) exists to improve services for people with dementia and their carers throughout the UK and beyond. We do this through research and teaching and by supporting workers and organisations that provide care for people with dementia. Our staff of academics, health and social care professionals, researchers and event organisers provide comprehensive dementia education and training, consultancy and research services. The Centre’s flagship Iris Murdoch Building is a model for dementia-friendly design. This open and welcoming environment provides inspiration for our team’s work in designing and remodelling care homes for people with dementia. Research into understanding the needs of people and how to support them is central to our work. The Research Group are members of the University of Stirling who conduct research into our understanding of dementia and related matters. Their projects help to improve the quality of life and services for people with dementia and their carers.

t is my very great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the Dementia Services Development Centre’s latest publications list. Our expanding range of specialist literature and dementia-related resources is constantly growing, and over the following pages you will find books and booklets, DVDs, and a host of other tools that are designed to equip you with up-todate skills and knowledge. We are also delighted to include details of our new virtual hospital, a free online tool to promote the best dementia-friendly design within hospitals. This complements our innovative and popular virtual care home. Both these online resources will enable readers to gain even more from our extensive Dementia Design Series, which you can browse through and order on the following pages. As well as expanding our range of publications, we are continuing to work to ensure that accurate, accessible information on dementia is made available to the widest audience possible. We are currently developing a range of leaflets in minority ethnic languages, and are also running events for carers that are translated into different languages. This will help ensure that our messages about the importance of delivering best practice and accessing appropriate support are spread as widely as possible. Whether you are a family carer, a clinician, a social care professional, an architect or a designer, or you simply want to know more about how you can best support a person you know who is living with dementia, there is something in the following pages for you. There are jargon-free practitioner guides designed to help carers understand various aspects of dementia, and easy-to-read tips and hints for family members who are caring for someone affected by the condition; there is international theory-based policy and practice, and a range of training resources for people working in acute, community and home care settings. All the products we feature here are available through the DSDC’s online dementia shop (www.dementiashop.co.uk), and many can be ordered through Amazon (www.amazon.co.uk). Alternatively, there is an order form on the back page. At the DSDC we specialise in providing innovative, passionate, intelligent and practical advice about dementia care. As you will discover, the people who have used our services highly value our input, and we are sure that you will too. Please let us know what you think of our products – we can be contacted any time by email at dementiashop@stir.ac.uk. Professor June Andrews Director, Dementia Services Development Centre

Designing buildings for people with dementia This book will help architects and planners ensure that new buildings are designed with people with dementia in mind, and that opportunities to incorporate optimal design features are not missed. Most of the design features that are beneficial to people with dementia are also useful for older people in general, or at worst have no negative impact on them. The guidance will help ensure that the needs of people with dementia are considered alongside those of other users of new buildings.

Air quality in buildings used by people with dementia Poor indoor air quality (temperature, dryness/humidity and air pollutants) can directly affect the health of anyone, but particularly people with dementia who may spend longer indoors than others. This guide explains the respiratory issues and considers indoor air quality and ventilation design in detail. It looks at types of ventilation and the design challenge in making it dementia-friendly. It also considers how the siting of the building and its orientation can affect interior comfort levels, and discusses how to achieve the optimum environment for people with dementia.

Behaviour This practice guide will provide practical strategies to enhance communication with people with dementia and avoid behaviour that we find challenging. It will look at how people with dementia communicate feelings, and explain how effective communication strategies can reduce levels of frustration and anxiety. It will feature sections on the influence of the environment; knowing the signals; and how people with dementia communicate feelings.
