ESSAY TWO | COLLAGE OF IDEAS

Casa bosque turned out to be our second design request as VOXEL•ESTUDIO in 2010. It participated in an exhibition that same year at the Museum of Modern Arts. MUSEO DE ARTE MODERNO [MAM] Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Environment changes everything ... nothing is isolated, everything takes on meaning. Everything is anything only at the moment it takes place. The non-contextual takes place, it is only a matter of time.

ESSENCE

Architecture has debated since always with the same variables such as essence, language, necessity, territory, context, light, materiality, technics etc. In many cases we tend to focus on some more than others, but the variables are always there present. Casa Bosque does not escape to any of these. In the exhibition In Forest photographer Marielis Seylerque explores the boundary between nature and humanity claiming that this absolute immersion of nature within our lives is only evident in extreme moments such as death and/or birth. The proposal responds to this condition and tries to dispel the idea of limit contemplating two principles: integration and adaptability.

La arquitectura a lidiado desde siempre con las mismas variables tales como esencia, lenguaje, necesidad, territorio, contexto, luz, materialidad, técnica, etc. En muchos casos tendemos a concentrarnos en algunas mas que en otras, pero las variable siempre están ahí presentes. La casa bosque no escapa a ninguna de estas. En la exposición In Forest la fotógrafa Marielis Seylerque explora el límite entre la naturaleza y la humanidad sosteniendo que esta inmersión absoluta de la naturaleza dentro de nuestras vidas es solamente evidente en momentos extremos tales como muerte y/o nacimiento. La propuesta responde a esta condición e intenta desvanecer la idea del límite contemplando dos principios: integración y adaptabilidad.

We began the exploration through conversations and sketches on the proposal and elaborated a story describing this spaces. Through this we travelled to a place that exists in the nooks of our distorted memory. A place that from a very reduced vision we see only isolated points or traits juxtaposed, but if we look from a distance it produces the adequate mix that defines its image.

Iniciamos la exploración mediante conversaciones y bosquejos sobre la propuesta y de como embarcarla, desarrollamos una historia que relata sus espacio. Mediante esta viajamos a un lugar que existe en los recovecos de nuestra distorsionada memoria. Un lugar que desde una visión muy reducida solo vemos puntos aislados o rasgos yuxtapuestos, pero si miramos desde cierta distancia producen la adecuada mezcla que define su imagen.

THE STORY

At times there is a need to unplug from this conglomerate of concrete and it is here where it begins a great trip to a FOREST wide and ready to be explored. A place where the limits are dissipated to achieve a catharsis. The characteristics of this FOREST are no diﬀerent from the others in the caribbean, with its tropical climate renews its energy by PHOTOSYNTHESIS. The PATHWAY is very clear, guided by water streams that leave their sound through space. These PATHWAYS connect to a series of habitats found here and there within their environment. They contain within themselves a few BUDS levitating in space delimited by BRANCHES AND TRUNKS. The elasticity of these BRANCHES AND TRUNKS tolerate large LEAFS. This allows the light to insinuate its presence amongst them, indicating with its shadow the relentless time slipped between them. The sensation of lightness is inevitable. There is another nature of HABITAT present within the forest and is the MICRO HABITAT, it is a space of temporary stay that is located in the nooks of the pathway. Our eyes breach through the horizon permitting a glimpse to BUBBLES incorporated in these HABITATS. The experience of the bubbles resembles a rebirth, purifying our bodies. The PATHWAY opens our visual and at the end… at the end its only a speculation of the imagination.

Por momentos existe la necesidad de desconectarse de este conglomerado de concreto y es aquí donde inicia un gran viaje a un BOSQUE amplio y listo para explorar. Un lugar donde los límites se disipan para lograr una catarsis. Las características de este BOSQUE no son diferentes a los demás en el caribe, con su clima tropical renueva su energía por FOTOSÍNTESIS. Sus SENDEROS son muy claros, guiados por arroyos que van dejando su sonido en el espacio. Estos SENDEROS conectan a una serie de HÁBITATS que se encuentran aquí y allá dentro de su ambiente. Estos contienen dentro de si unos CAPULLOS levitando en el espacio delimitados por RAMAS Y TRONCOS. La elasticidad de estas RAMAS Y TRONCOS soportan grandes COPAS que saltan a la vista. Esto permite que la luz insinúe su presencia entre ellas, marcando con su sombra el implacable tiempo deslizado entre superficies. La sensación de ligereza es inevitable. Existe otra naturaleza de HÁBITAT presente dentro del bosque y es el MICRO HÁBITAT, es un espacio de permanencia temporal que se encuentra en los recovecos del sendero. Entre brechas se vislumbran BURBUJAS incorporadas a estos HÁBITATS. La experiencia de las burbujas se asemeja a un renacer, purificamos nuestros cuerpos. El SENDERO nos abre la visual y al final… al final son solo elucubraciones de la imaginación.

“Villa Mella, or San Felipe de Villa Mella, is a municipality in Santo Domingo Norte. Villa Mella is located north of the Isabela River, about 6 miles (or 10 kilometers) to the north of the center of Santo Domingo, and is considered an additional neighborhood of the capital. It is also home to the musical organization known as the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit of the Congos of Villa Mella, recognized in 2001 by UNESCO. Villa Mella is known for its retention and preservation of African cultural roots and heritage. One of the strongest manifestations of this can be found in the local, 300year-old cofradía (brotherhood or voluntary association) of the Congos of Espíritu Santo.”

Esta situado al norte del Río Isabela, aproximadamente 6 millas (o 10 kilómetros) al norte del centro de Santo Domingo, y es considerado un vecindario adicional de la capital. También es el hogar de la organización musical conocida como la Cofradía del Espíritu Santo de los Congos de Villa Mella, reconocidos en 2001 por la UNESCO. Villa Mella es conocido por su retención y conservación de la cultura de origen y patrimonio. Una de las manifestaciones más importantes de esto se encuentra en la local, 300 años de la hermandad o voluntaria asociación de los Congos de Espíritu Santo.

As spacial exploration the project allows, due to its nature, fl exible and adaptable conditions as a result of the context in which it is deployed. These variables are conditioned by the topography and vegetation. That is to say, if we urge the project in diﬀerent contexts, the formal response would change but its essence would be the same.

Como exploración espacial el proyecto permite, debido a su naturaleza, adquirir condiciones morfológicas flexibles y adaptables como consecuencia del contexto donde se emplace. Estas variables están condicionadas por la topografía y la vegetación. Es decir, si emplazamos el proyecto en distintos contextos la respuesta formal cambiaría mas su escénica sería la misma.

GRADUAL GROWTH

It is a gradual investment proposal, shared between two families for the development of a space that opens a parenthesis to the everyday, leaving the city in an inert state. The proposal is segmented in several stages.

DIAGRAM

• Central pathway [Attractor or trail] - Articulates the spaces managing all flows. The characteristics of this are: • Fluidity, integrating the element of water to make emphasis on the same; and • Adaptability due to the topography. The roof, a reference to a dilated limit, shows its striated fibers allowing the entry of light between them. • Living-dining room-garden [Micro-Habitat] - place devoted to the leisure and landscaping, corresponds to the initial development next to the pathway. • Kitchen module [Habitat 01] - single module that shares roof with living room and dining, in the same way part of the initial development. • Room module [Habitat 02] - Independent modules developed by each family in a particular manner. • Bathroom module [Bubbles] - All modules handle dual layers to develop natural ventilation and visual control.

Es una propuesta de inversión gradual, compartida entre dos familias para el desarrollo de un espacio que abre un paréntesis a lo cotidiano, dejando la ciudad en un estado inerte de stand-by. La propuesta está segmentada en varias etapas. • Pasarela central [Atractor o Sendero] - Articula los espacios administrando todos los flujos. Las características de esta son: • Fluidez, integrando el elemento agua para hacer énfasis en la misma; y • Adaptabilidad debido a la topografía. La techumbre, hace referencia a un límite dilatado, muestra sus fibras estriadas permitiendo la entrada de la luz entre ellas. • Sala-Comedor-Jardín [Micro-Hábitat] - lugar destinado al ocio y al paisajismo, corresponde al desarrollo inicial junto a la pasarela. • Módulo de cocina [Hábitat 01] - Módulo único que comparte techumbre con la sala y el comedor, de igual manera forma parte del desarrollo inicial. • Módulo de baño [Burbujas]: Todos los módulos manejan doble capa para desarrollar ventilación natural y control de las visuales. • Módulo de habitaciones [Hábitat 02] - Módulos independientes desarrollados por cada familia de manera particular.
