The wonders of Athens and cruising the Greek Islands It is in Athens, perhaps the greatest city of antiquity, where our story begins. The poet John Milton called Athens "the eye of Greece, mother of arts and eloquence," and it was here in the 5th century BC that the genius and creativity of the ancient Greek world shone with unprecedented brilliance. This was the time of the great statesman Pericles who organised the construction of the Acropolis, of the dramatists Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripedes and, of course, of the philosopher Socrates. Through visits to all the key sights and the commentary of expert guides and lecturers, your visit to this truly remarkable place will bring to life

this "Golden Age" of Western civilisation. After the vibrancy of Athens, the tranquillity of the Greek Islands offers a wonderful contrast and, as you sail through the sparkling waters of the Aegean, you have time to meet your fellow passengers, get to know the ship and relax into life on board. As well as stunning natural beauty, the isles of Greece offer some of the most impressive sites from this region's fascinating history. On Delos, legendary birthplace of Apollo and the paramount religious sanctuary of the ancient Greek world, you can walk along the Terrace of the Lions with its famous marble guardian statues and explore the classic Doric Temple of the Delians.

By contrast, nearby Mykonos offers the more sybaritic experience of vibrant tavernas and bustling shops. Then, a visit to Crete takes you back to the time of the Minoans, one of the earliest civilisations of antiquity, and the ornate palace at Knossos. Charming Patmos, the Crusader stronghold of Rhodes and spectacular Santorini also feature as the ship makes its way to Turkey.

Ephesus and the Aegean Coast The influence of the ancient Greeks and the later Roman Empire reached throughout the eastern Mediterranean and some of the most impressive relics of these great cultures are to be found on the coast of Turkey. Ephesus is rightly one of the most famous Graeco-Roman sites in the world:

it was here that the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, once stood and St Paul delivered his celebrated sermons. Once the capital of the Roman Province of Asia, Ephesus is home to the magnificent Library of Celsus and the largest theatre in the ancient world. Once conquered by Alexander the Great, the ancient city of Pergamon with its spectacular hill-top setting and fabulous monuments is another highlight close to the Turkish coast. A call at the port of Canakkale reminds you of how strategically vital these waters have been for centuries. Here, on either side of the Hellespont, you find the sites of two conflicts separated by a few miles but thousands of years: Troy and the World War I battle of Gallipoli.

ISTANBUL: CITY OF EMPIRES

“ f the Earth were a single state,” Napoleon wrote, “Istanbul would be its capital.” Since its foundation as Byzantium around 660BC, this city has been at the centre of history: for nearly sixteen centuries following its re-establishment as Constantinople in 330AD, it has served as an imperial capital for the Roman (330–395), the Byzantine (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin (1204–1261), and the Ottoman (1453–1922) empires. Mooring overnight in the heart of the city, you could not be better placed to appreciate and explore this truly special place. Our expert guides ensure that you do not miss any of Istanbul’s many highlights from the splendid Hagia Sophia to the sprawling home of the sultans, Topkapi Palace. Any spare time you might have can be well spent taking a boat trip along the Bosphorus or haggling in the Grand Bazaar.

Explore Dalmatian fjords, Roman palaces and Adriatic islands As you make your way to or from Venice, one of the great advantages of small-ship cruising becomes apparent as the size of Aegean Odyssey means that you sail as close as possible to some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery in the world. Cruising in coastal waters allows you to appreciate the true magnificence of Kotor Bay. Cutting through the Dinaric Alps in Montenegro, this dramatically beautiful inlet stretches over 20 miles inland and is Europe’s southernmost fjord.

Along the Dalmatian coast Aegean Odyssey calls at two fascinating and architecturally pleasing ports, Dubrovnik and Split. The beauty of Dubrovnik moved the writer George Bernard Shaw to describe it as “Paradise on Earth” and indeed it’s hard to imagine anyone becoming jaded by the city’s marble streets, baroque buildings and charming people. Further up the Adriatic coast, the highlight of the visit to Split is without doubt touring the vast Palace of Diocletian. Completed in 305AD, the limestone and marble palace was built by the Emperor Diocletian for his retirement, and the complex comprised three temples, Diocletian’s massive mausoleum (now the Cathedral of St Dominus) and enough accommodation to house 9,000 people.

spectacular sights Sparkling Ravenna and serene Venice On the Adriatic’s Italian coast lies one of Europe’s most dazzling architectural treasures. Briefly the capital of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, Ravenna is famous for its superb early Christian mosaics and buildings. Your visits to the Byzantine masterpiece Church of St Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placida will thrill and inspire. The first doge (duke) of Venice was elected in 726AD and the Venetian republic existed for over a millennium until 1797. Often referred to La Serenissima, the Most Serene Republic, the Venetians acquired an empire of trade and commercial interests. This wealth funded the city you see today. Unlike cruises on larger vessels that offer a brief daytime stop in this wonderful place, our itineraries include a two-night hotel stay in the heart of Venice so you have time to really explore the city, furthermore, your visit will include an exclusive evening visit to St Mark’s Cathedral.

Italy’s “Dolce Vita” and France’s glamorous Cote d’Azur No other country in Europe combines the best of art, culture, gastronomy and style with quite the same panache as Italy. Here you can enjoy a scoop of the most delicious

ice cream in the world as you admire some of the greatest treasures of antiquity or sip a Campari while sitting in the sunshine on the stunning Amalfi Coast. Whether you are standing on the stage of the Greek theatre at Taormina in Sicily overlooking Mount Etna or marvelling at the extensive ruins of tragic Pompeii, the

joy of Italy and its way of life will entrance you. Furthermore, from the grandeur of Imperial Rome to the Renaissance splendour of Florence, Italy’s great cities are places of charm and wonder. Few will forget setting sight on the monumental Colosseum and the sprawling Roman Forum or the great Florentine Renaissance palaces and their numerous masterpieces of Western art. Sailing west, Aegean Odyssey cruises along the sophisticated French Riviera to the bustling port of Marseilles.

Provence: land of olive trees and lavender This is an ideal place to not only explore the lavender fields and charming villages

of Provence but also for visiting some of southern France’s most interesting places. Chief among these is the medieval town of Avignon. Surrounded by well preserved 800-year-old stone ramparts, graceful Avignon was once the seat of papal power and this honour bestowed the city with a legacy of magnificent art and architecture, none grander than the massive medieval fortress and papal palace, Palais des Papes. It is also home to the Pont d'Avignon – of nursery-rhyme fame – that spans halfway across the River Rhône. The town is also criss-crossed with ancient cobbled alleyways lined with inviting boutiques and opening out onto leafy squares over-flowing with cafe tables.

Elegant Arles with its splendid Roman ruins including the famous amphitheatre and Carcassonne with its impressive city walls and fortress also await. The natural beauty of the Nice area and its mild Mediterranean climate have made it a popular destination since the 18th century. The city's main seaside promenade, the Promenade des Anglais (â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the Walkway of the English') owes its name to some of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earliest visitors, the English aristocracy. The picturesque Nicean surroundings have attracted not only those in search of relaxation, but also those seeking inspiration. The clear air and soft light has been of particular appeal to some of

Western culture's most outstanding painters, such as Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse. Their work is commemorated in many of the city's museums, including the Musee Matisse and Musee des Beaux-Arts. An overnight stay also gives you the opportunity to spend some time in a place synonymous with the glamour and opulence of the South of France, Monte Carlo.

A taste of Spain – from Moorish palaces to river cruising With its cosmopolitan lifestyle, stunning architecture, fabulous food and fascinating historical sites, Barcelona is understandably one of Europe’s most popular destinations. Highlights of your visit include the Roman sites of the city including the Temple of Apollo and Roman remains in the Gothic Quarter and, a view of perhaps the most extraordinary of the city’s landmarks, the Sagrada Familia, the massive Catalan church designed by the visionary architect Antoni Gaudí. Construction of this iconic building began in 1882 and is still ongoing.

A short cruise along the coast brings you to the tranquil and sophisticated city of Valencia. With its magnificent 13th-century cathedral, combination of ancient and avant-garde architecture, and open green spaces, this charming city never fails to delight the visitor. In the year 711, Moorish forces from Morocco and Algeria invaded Spain and in seven years conquered the Iberian Peninsula, eventually conquering territory that comprised most of Spain, Portugal and parts of France. Their rule lasted until 1492 and the Moors left behind a remarkable legacy of elaborate palaces, mosques and gardens. Two of the greatest treasures from this time are the Alhambra in Granada and the Great Mosque in Cordoba.

Spain is rightly famous for its great food and wine, and a stop at Jerez allows you to sample one of the country’s most famous products. In the convivial atmosphere of the Bodegas Gonzalez Byass you will try some of Spain’s very best sherry. Before leaving Spain, Aegean Odyssey takes you on a spectacular journey cruising up the Guadalquivir River into the heart of the Andalusian city of Seville.

From Moroccan souks to Madeira, the Canaries and Sahara Desert Morocco, with its rich culture, fascinating history and exotic atmosphere should be high on everyone’s travel list. Combining cruising with an exciting land-tour ensures that you see the very best of this wonderful

palaces to enjoying a fresh pastry and bica (espresso) at a bar in a leafy plaza and listening to the haunting melodies of Portuguese fado music. During your tour, you will have the opportunity to visit the Royal Carriage Museum and explore the coastal areas around the capital including Estoril, Europe’s most western point at Cabo de Roca, and the Royal Palace and gardens at Queluz.

After the exotic hustle and bustle of Morocco, Madeira and the Canary Islands offer a complete change of pace. Madeira, once favoured by Sir Winston Churchill as the perfect place to paint and relax, is a gem of an island some 250 miles north of Tenerife. Settled by the Portuguese in 1419 and ceded to the British in the early nineteenth century, Madeira’s wonderful climate, lush gardens and famous wine have proved popular with visitors for centuries. Likewise, the year-round climate, dramatic volcanic landscapes, picturesque

upland villages and amazing flora of La Palma and Fuerteventura in the Canaries have made these islands rightly popular. El Marsa is a fishing port on the coast of the Western Sahara and from here you drive roughly 8 miles through the haunting and beautiful desert landscape of sand dunes to the city of Laayoune (whose Arabic name means “water source”).

The sounds and sights of Portugal Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. The Lisbon experience encompasses so many things, from visiting magnificent museums and exquisite

Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Oporto became a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. A colourful city, Oporto is dotted with medieval relics, soaring bell towers, extravagant baroque churches and stately beaux-arts buildings. The historic centre is the Ribeira district, a place typified by old shop fronts, village-style plazas and old houses where Roman ruins lurk beneath

the foundations. Oporto is also home to some excellent museums and galleries including the Álvaro Siza Vieira’s Museu de Arte Contemporânea and Rem Koolhaas’ Casa da Música.

An unforgettable pilgrimage The capital of the Spanish province of Galicia, Santiago de Compostela is one of the most important places in Christendom as it is reputed to be the place where St James, one of the twelve Apostles of Christ, is buried (see box). It was in the 8th century AD that the remains were identified as those of Saint James the Great, and their acceptance as such by the Pope and Charlemagne. From then on, this settlement was not just a city, but a holy city, and one of the main centres of Christian pilgrimage.

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA: A PLACE OF PILGRIMAGE

ccording to legend, the apostle Saint James the Great brought Christianity to the Iberian Peninsula. In 44AD he was beheaded in Jerusalem and his remains were later brought back to Galicia, Spain. His tomb is said to have been rediscovered in 814AD by the hermit Pelagius after he witnessed strange lights in the night sky, and King Alfonso II ordered the construction of a chapel on the site. Construction of the present cathedral began in 1075 and the last stone was laid in 1122. The cathedral was expanded and embellished with additions in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

new adventures La Belle France: From wine tasting in Bordeaux to the chateaux of the Loire After sailing along France’s Atlantic Coast, Aegean Odyssey cruises up the River Gironde to berth in centre of Bordeaux. The city boasts the most beautiful streets in France and its magnificent 18th-century centre prompted Queen Elizabeth II to call the city “the very essence of elegance” on her last visit. Bordeaux is also rightly regarded as the wine capital of the world, producing some of the greatest vintages available. In Bordeaux, wine is at the centre of life and on your visit you will enjoy an expertly guided tasting at one of the best chateaux. This is the perfect opportunity to try some of the greatest wines and learn about the vineyards while getting to know your fellow passengers. Further up the coast is the city of Nantes, our gateway to an unforgettable land tour

to the picturesque Chateaux Country of the Loire. From the 16th century, the Loire Valley was where the French royalty preferred to spend their time and so the local chateaux were renovated into lavish summer residences. You’ll overnight in the medieval town of Amboise and enjoy visits to several chateaux including world-famous Chenonceau (see box for more details).

Norman abbeys and the D-Day Invasion beaches On France’s northern coast two contrasting but equally moving sites await you: the ancient fortifications and abbey of Mont Saint-Michel and the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy. The island of

Mont Saint-Michel has been the seat of a monastery since the 8th century. The abbey is one of the most stunning monuments to the great Norman civilisation that gives this region its name. Descended from the Vikings (“Norse Men”), the Norman influence would be felt throughout Europe (including the Kingdom of Sicily) and the Holy Land. Mont SaintMichel’s unique position of being an island only 600 metres from land made it readily accessible at low tide to the many pilgrims visiting the abbey. Equally, this position made it readily defensible as an incoming tide stranded, or drowned, would-be assailants. By capitalising on this natural defence, the Mont remained unconquered

during the Hundred Years’ War with a small garrison successfully defending it against a full attack by the English in 1433. One of France's most recognisable landmarks, Mont Saint-Michel and its bay are part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Fortifications from modern times mark the beaches in Normandy where the Allies landed in 1944. On the 6th June 1944 the largest invasion force ever assembled landed on the coast of occupied France on five beaches code-named Sword, Juno, Omaha, Utah, and Gold. An expertly guided tour of this sacred battlefield will enlighten and inform your understanding of this most famous of battles.

Evenings on board There will be a string trio, pianist, casual dancing before and after dinner, and occasional visiting local entertainment. No casino or disco. As we carry an average of 350 passengers, our ship is ideal for those who dislike travelling around with hordes of people. This boutique-style cruising tends to be more expensive to operate than larger ships, but if you like to avoid crowds, wander around beautiful islands, cruise remote inlets and rivers, visit charming villages and explore ancient sites that are inaccessible to others, then Aegean Odyssey is the ideal ship.

Resort casual is the general recommendation, however, there may be occasions where a jacket for men and cocktail attire for ladies is appropriate. Language on board The ship’s language is English and you can expect fellow passengers to be mainly from the UK, US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia with a sprinkling of enthusiasts from Europe. GILLIAN HOVELL After graduating in Latin and Ancient History at Exeter University and a career in television, Gillian became deeply involved in archaeology. She is an author, historian, archaeologist, tour guide and NADFAS accredited public speaker of considerable experience and astonishing range.

ERNEST REA Ernie is a celebrated broadcaster who specialises on the history of religions. His radio programme, Beyond Belief on BBC Radio 4, was awarded the prestigious Sony Gold Award for the best Speech Programme. From 1989 -2001 he was Head of Religious Broadcasting for the BBC and spent time in the United States brokering television deals. RACHEL WARD Rachel Ward was curator of Arab-Islamic material at the British Museum from 1983-2000. She has lectured regularly there and at SOAS. She is currently a NADFAS accredited freelance lecturer and writer on Islamic art. Her work has been widely published, including books on Islamic Metalwork and Enamelled Glass. JEREMY BLACK MBE Jeremy is a British historian and Professor of History at the University of Exeter. He is the author of over 100 books and has been described as "the most prolific historical scholar of our age". Graduating from Cambridge with a starred first he taught at Durham University before moving to Exeter in 1996. He was awarded an MBE in 2000 for services to stamp design.

ADAM TANNER A writer who has spent much of his career as a foreign correspondent covering the transformation of former Communist countries, Adam is a fellow at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University. He worked in Venice for five summers, including being a private tour guide. Adam travelled to Yugoslavia in 1985 to write the Frommer’s guide to Eastern Europe and Yugoslavia. He remains a regular visitor to Croatia.

JOHN OSBORNE John graduated in Classical subjects at Cambridge University, then taught at Marlborough College and later at the British Council in Iran and Turkey, which gave him a now long-standing interest in Islamic culture as well as the ancient civilisations of these two countries. He has lectured regularly for NADFAS, run courses and led classical tours to Europe.

GREGORY DOWLING Gregory graduated in English literature at the University of Oxford in 1978. Since 1979 he has lived in Italy. He has taught in Naples, Siena, Verona and, since 1981, in Venice. He is now Associate Professor of American Literature at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. His academic publications include a book on American narrative poetry, a book on Byron’s Venice, a co-edited anthology of American poetry about Venice and numerous articles on British and American literature.

TREVOR BRYCE Emeritus Professor Trevor Bryce is a Classicist and Near Eastern historian. Trevor is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and has held visiting Fellowships at Princeton, Oxford, Sydney and Canberra. His extensive publications deal primarily with the history and civilisations of the ancient Near and Middle Eastern world. He was awarded a Doctor of Letters Degree at The University of Queensland.

Professor ROBIN CORMACK Robin is an art historian who works on Mediterranean art, particularly from Antiquity and Byzantium, but also from the Renaissance. He teaches in the Classics Faculty, University of Cambridge, and at the Universities of California at Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Robin has published books on Byzantine Art, and co-curated the Royal Academy exhibition, Byzantium 330-1453. JANE ANGELINI Jane Angelini is a freelance lecturer, working for various art organisations and museums, as well as running her own specialist company, St James's Art Tours. She has a BA in Russian Studies and an MA in Byzantine Art, and as well as a lecturing career has translated works of 19th century Russian literature for Penguin Books and Oxford University Press. She has travelled widely and speaks several foreign languages. Dr DAVID PRICE WILLIAMS David Price Williams worked for the Smithsonian Institution as an archaeological field surveyor on excavations in the Near East before directing his own field research in the same area through the early 1970s. David has just retired after thirty-seven years lecturing on the Archaeology of Western Asia (Eastern Mediterranean) at the Institute of Archaeology for the University of London Extra Mural Department. He is the author and co-author of numerous academic papers on the area. RODERICK BEATON Roderick Beaton is a leading authority on Greece and the eastern Mediterranean world from the middle ages to today. He holds the Koraes Chair of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature at King’s College London, where he is also Director of the Centre for Hellenic Studies. He is a fluent Greek-speaker and has often appeared on Greek TV talking about his work. His most recent prize winning book is Byron’s War: Romantic Rebellion, Greek Revolution (2013). In 2013 he was also elected a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA).

AMMAN, ANCIENT PETRA AND THE SUEZ CANAL Citadel Hill in Jordan's capital Amman is the site of an impressive concentration of antiquity including the 2nd-century AD Temple of Hercules, the Omayyad Palace and Bronze and Iron Age remains. Graeco-Roman Jerash was built by Alexander the Great in the 2nd century BC and was a flourishing city of the Decapolis, the league of ten Roman cities. The city lay untouched for centuries and is very well preserved – here you can see colonnaded streets, temples and a theatre which once held 5,000 spectators. Your drive to Petra takes a scenic route via the Dead Sea – pause for lunch and take a dip in the sea's salutary buoyant waters. Your first glimpse of the ancient rose-red city of Petra is one you will not forget, as you emerge from the mile-long path that winds between two overhanging cliffs to stand in front of the impressive colonnaded Treasury. ATHENS AND ANCIENT CORINTH During your two-night hotel stay in Athens you will enjoy a morning tour of the Acropolis, symbol of the magnificent achievements of Athenian culture, including a visit to the Acropolis Museum. In free time, perhaps walk up Mars Hill where St Paul preached to the Athenians. Before embarking on the Aegean Odyssey in Piraeus, you will visit ancient Corinth where St Paul lived during the 50s AD. See the remains of the first-century shops, the agora, the Temple of Apollo, and the platform in the Roman Forum from which he pleaded his case to the Corinthians. THE GLORIOUS GREEK ISLES Delos is one of the most interesting archaeological sites in Greece and was the paramount religious sanctuary of the ancient Greek world. Nearby Mykonos is ideal for some people watching and evening drinks. The religious significance of Patmos dates from the arrival of St John in AD95. Here you will visit the Holy Cave of the Apocalypse, where he dictated the Book of Revelation, and the Monastery of St John, founded in 1088. In the afternoon and early evening you are free to relax on this beautiful island. THE COAST OF TURKEY & THE DARDANELLES From the lively port of Kusadasi you have a choice of excursions. Drive to ancient Ephesus and see the Odeon (concert hall), the Temple of Hadrian, the Library of Celsus, and the Great Theatre where St Paul preached. Alternatively, you can visit Miletus, where he met with the elders of the church of Ephesus in 57AD. From the port of Dikili there’s a tour to the Hellenistic ruins of Pergamon.

Founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC, Pergamon once rivalled Athens and Alexandria as a centre of culture and learning. Canakkale is on the shores of the Dardanelles – the ancient Hellespont. Again you have a choice of excursions. The 13th or 12th century BC siege of Troy by Spartan and Achaean warriors has fired the imagination of poets over thousands of years. Today, little remains of the 5,000 years of habitation but you can sense the history as you view the massive walls, a Roman Theatre and the reputed Palace of King Priam. Or perhaps ferry over to Gallipoli, scene of one of the most tragic campaigns of World War I. PHILIPPI, THESSALONICA AND MONASTERIES IN THE SKY Morning arrival in Kavala – ancient Neapolis – where St Paul, accompanied by Silas, Luke and Timothy, first set foot in Europe. From here you head for Philippi where he delivered his first sermon in Europe, sowing the seeds of Christianity, and where among the ruins is the prison into which he and Silas were thrown. St Paul also preached in Thessalonica and wrote two epistles to the ancient Thessalonians. You will explore the city’s Byzantine heritage and, in the afternoon, travel to Vergina. Even by the standards of Greece, Vergina is an old city. There is evidence that it was populated as early as 1000BC and its inhabitants were among the first Christians in the Empire. From the port of Volos, you will travel by road to see the famous Byzantine monasteries built on the sandstone towers at Meteora. Return to the ship for an evening departure to Skiathos, a delightful Greek island and the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing final day.

The island was also home to the Minoan settlement of Akrotiri: dating from the 16th century BC this ancient city was wonderfully preserved under volcanic ash. The heyday of Minoan civilisation (2000-1600BC) was marked by the construction of great palaces, the best known is Knossos on the island of Crete. Excavations began in 1899 by the British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans, who controversially “restored” the palace with his own eccentric ideas of Minoan interior design. The next port of call is Rhodes and a chance to explore the Old Town and the Citadel of the Knights of St John. There is also the opportunity to visit the Acropolis at Lindos. CLASSICAL GREECE Begin your journey with a hotel stay in the Greek capital including a full morning's guided tour of Athens’ ancient sites including the Acropolis. Built during the "Golden Age", the Acropolis represents the magnificent achievements of Athenian culture during this remarkable era. You will also visit the wonderful Acropolis Museum and have plenty of free time to explore the city's other sites. Gythion is the first port of call for our tour to Sparta and Mystra, followed by Katakolon for a morning's tour to Ancient Olympia. The first Olympic Games took place here in 776BC and the site was also an important religious centre, as Mount Olympus was believed to be the home of Zeus. Return to the ship for a lunchtime departure and a leisure afternoon cruising the Ionian Sea en route to Ithaca where you will be able to spend a relaxing evening ashore. ELEGANT CORFU AND ANCIENT BUTRINT With cricket still played on the green, the legacy of British rule is evident in Corfu Town as you will see during the morning tour. You will also visit the Byzantine Museum housed in the Church of Panagia Antivouniotissa. The archaeological site of Butrint has been occupied since at least the 8th century BC. Roman Emperor Augustus founded a colony here, and Butrint’s medieval history was turbulent as the town was involved in the power struggles between Byzantium and successive Norman, Angevin and Venetian states. It is consequently a fascinating archaeological and historical site.

NATURAL AND ANCIENT WONDERS OF DALMATIA After cruising deep into the stunning fjord of Kotor Bay in Montenegro, the ship arrives at Dubrovnik for a free evening ashore. Next morning, your sightseeing features the magnificent fortifications including the 10th century city walls, the Baroque Church of St Blaise and the Cathedral which boasts Titian’s Assumption over the main altar. The Croatian town of Split is home to one of the greatest of all Roman sites, the Palace of Diocletian. There will be a morning tour of this remarkable palace including the Temple of Jupiter and Diocletian’s Mausoleum. In the afternoon, there is the option of visiting one of the true gems of the Dalmatian coast, the delightful island of Trogir. The Romans, Byzantines and Venetians all coveted the port of Zadar and as a result it is rich in fascinating monuments. THE CHARM AND MAGIC OF LISBON There has been a settlement on the site of Lisbon since Neolithic times and the city has played a central role in European history since Roman times. This rich past will become evident as you tour the city which includes Alfama, the oldest quarter, the monumental statue of Christ the King, the Church of Jeronimos, a 16th-century architectural masterpiece and the fascinating Maritime Museum. You may also take the opportunity to visit the fairytale-like hilltop town of Sintra, the fishing village of Cascais or the fashionable resort of Estoril. THE MOORS IN SPAIN Cadiz was the gateway to the New World and its old town reflects the city’s rich history with its cluster of narrow streets opening on to charming small squares. You will see the old town, visit the Plaza España and the gardens where the famous monument of Las Cortes (Spanish Parliament) of 1812 is situated. Then drive inland to Jerez de la Frontera and visit Bodega Gonzalez Byass, one of the most famous wine cellars for a tour and sherry tasting. Begun in 1238, the Alhambra in Granada was the last capital of the Moors in Spain and when it fell to the Christian armies in the 15th century, they were so impressed with the splendour of the complex that they could not bear to destroy it. Our tour also includes the Royal Palace and the Generalife with its splendid gardens. ROMAN SPAIN AND CATALONIA Founded by the Romans, Valencia is a charming old city and also home to wonderful modern architecture including the City of Arts and Science. Included morning sightseeing of Barcelona will be dedicated to exploring the Roman sites of

the city including the Temple of Apollo and Roman remains in the Gothic Quarter. You then have time to explore on your own. Perhaps visit Sagrada Familia, the massive Catalan church designed by the visionary architect Antoni Gaudí. Construction of this iconic building began in 1882 and is still ongoing. PROVENCE & THE RIVIERA The fortified city of Carcassonne became the largest walled stronghold of the Middle Ages, and its remarkable towers and ramparts are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Arriving in the bustling port of Marseilles you will travel to two treasures in the Provençal countryside. Avignon, as well as being home to the eponymous bridge, boasts one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe, the Papal Palace founded by Pope Clement V in 1309. And Arles is famous for its Roman amphitheatre. You’ll then cruise along the French Riviera to an overnight stay in Monte Carlo, a place synonymous with glamour and joie de vivre. ANCIENT ROME & POMPEII Your voyage to Byzantium starts with a twonight hotel stay in Rome, where sightseeing features a tour beginning with the largest and most famous Roman amphitheatre, the Colosseum, constructed in 80AD by Emperor Vespasian. You’ll also visit the sumptuous basilica of St Peter’s in the Vatican. In the afternoon you are free to visit some of Rome’s many other wonders – the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and Sistine Chapel should be on your list. Sorrento is an excellent base from which to visit Pompeii, which was engulfed by lava erupting from Mt Vesuvius in August 79AD. Alternatively, you can visit the nearby town of Herculaneum that also perished during the eruption. THE TREASURES OF SICILY AND CORFU Sicily is a celebration of the greatest achievements of Western civilisation: the Norman Royal Palace and Palatine Chapel in Palermo, and the dazzling mosaics of Monreale Cathedral are followed by the magnificent Greek theatre at Taormina with its breathtaking views of Mt Etna. The legacy of British rule is evident in Corfu Town as you will see during this morning’s tour. You will visit the Byzantine Museum and the elegant Esplanade. CLASSICAL GREECE AND SACRED GREEK ISLANDS Mentioned in The Odyssey and inhabited since the Neolithic age, Pylos is a treasure trove of historical sites and in 1827 its bay was the site of the Battle of Navarino. Gythion is the port for our adventure to Sparta and Mystra. From Piraeus, you take the short drive to Athens for a guided tour of the city's ancient sites including the Acropolis. THE WONDERS OF BYZANTIUM Start your holiday with a two-night hotel stay in Istanbul where sightseeing takes in the Byzantine 6th-century Cathedral of Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, residence of the early sultans, and the Sultan Ahmet Camii (Blue Mosque). HELLESPONT LEADS TO ANCIENT TURKEY The 13th- or 12th-century BC siege of Troy by Spartan and Achaean warriors has fired the imagination of poets over thousands of years. Today little remains of the 5,000 years of habitation but you can sense the history as you view the massive walls, a Roman theatre and the reputed Palace of King Priam. Alternatively, take a ferry across the Dardanelles to the moving memorials of Gallipoli. Ephesus was the ancient Roman capital of the province of Asia. It contains the largest collection of Roman ruins in the eastern Mediterranean including the Library of Celsus and the theatre, which is believed to be the largest outdoor theatre in the ancient world. There is also the opportunity to visit Pergamon, founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC. Cruise on to Bodrum and head for the remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassos, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the 15th-century Castle of St Peter. Fethiye and the ruins of the ancient city of Patara are next, including the impressive agora. You will also see one of the great sites of the Lycia, Xantos.

LEGENDARY GREEK ISLANDS The next port of call is Rhodes and a chance to explore Rhodes Old Town and the Citadel of the Knights of St John. There is also an opportunity to visit the Acropolis at Lindos. The most important archaeological site on Kos is Asklepeion. Built in the 4th century BC, it served as a temple to Asklepios, the god of health, and today its ruins are remarkably well preserved. One of the Aegean’s most spectacular sights is the cliffs of Santorini rising from a great half-moon caldera. The island was also home to the Minoan settlement of Akrotiri: dating from the 16th century BC this ancient city was wonderfully preserved under volcanic ash. CLASSICAL GREECE AND ATHENS From Nauplia, you have a choice of excursions to the great sites of Classical Greece: ancient Mycenae or the magnificent theatre at Epidaurus where the acoustics are so good you can hear a pin drop from the top row. In the afternoon, there is the option of visiting one of the true gems of the Dalmatian coast, the delightful island of Trogir. Included sightseeing in Dubrovnik features the magnificent fortifications including the 10th century city walls, the Baroque Church of St Blaise and the Cathedral. Set in the south-eastern tip of Italy's boot, Lecce is a city of architectural treasures. These include the 25,000-seat Roman amphitheatre and the stunning Palazzo Tamborino with its seductive secret garden. The Albanian archaeological site of Butrint has been occupied since at least the 8th century BC. The legacy of British rule is evident in Corfu Town as you will see during the afternoon tour. You will also visit the Byzantine Museum housed in the church of Panagia Antivouniotissa.

SICILY, PAESTUM AND AMALFI After a relaxing day at sea, you come to Taormina on the island of Sicily. With its mountainous background and spectacular views of Etna, the GraecoRoman theatre is our morning destination. In the afternoon you cruise through the Strait of Messina and later pass by volcanic Stromboli – hoping for a magical firework display. From Salerno there’s a visit to Paestum. Legend has it that Paestum was founded by Jason of Argonaut fame. What is undoubted, however, is the majesty of the three Greek temples that were the heart of this 6th century Greek city. In the afternoon, you cruise along the delightful Amalfi coast to Sorrento. MYSTERIES OF POMPEII & THE GRANDEUR OF ROME From cliff-top Sorrento you will drive to the magnificent remains of Pompeii. The town, some of which dates back to the 6th century BC, was engulfed by lava erupting from Vesuvius in August 79AD. From the casts of the bodies of its inhabitants, to the ancient surgical implements and beautiful frescoes, nowhere else gives us such an insight into the lives of the ancients. Alternatively, you can visit the nearby town of Herculaneum which perished in the same eruption. There will also be time to visit the wonderful isle of Capri or the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. Disembark for a two-night hotel stay in the Eternal City. THE GLORIES OF ROME & SICILY Rome, known as the Eternal City, is a place that enchants and surprises all who visit. During your stay, your included tour begins with the famous Colosseum and ends with a visit to St Peter’s in Vatican City. GIBRALTAR AND THE BEST OF MORROCO Gibraltar, or the Rock, rises nearly 1,400ft above sea level and is said to be one of the legendary Pillars of Hercules. Your tour includes Europa Point, the southernmost point of Gibraltar, the famous St Michael’s Cave, and the network of narrow tunnels that were used back in the Second World War. Continue on to Casablanca to rejoin Aegean Odyssey. Located on the Atlantic coastline, Rabat, meaning “fortified place”, is Morocco’s capital. SPECIAL NEEDS The cruises and land programmes featured include extensive sightseeing which may involve walking on uneven surfaces, up and down multiple stairs, and require a certain level of fitness and mobility. SHORE EXCURSIONS AND LAND ARRANGEMENTS Shore Excursions: Included in most ports of call. Where suitable, some excursions will be available at an additional cost. Descriptions of the tours will be sent with your final documents or made available on the Voyages to Antiquity website. Lunches on full-day tours can be a picnic lunch provided by Aegean Odyssey or at a local restaurant. On some tours, where lunchtime is in a place offering a wide choice of restaurants, we have not included lunch and left it up to you (such as in Rome, Florence and Urbino). In places such as Venice and Athens, you may wish to remain in the city at the end of the morning sightseeing rather than return to the ship and in these instances lunch will also be under your own arrangements. Please note that these programmes are planned far in advance of your visit, and we

SMOKING

LAUNDRY AND PRESSING

Smoking is only permitted on Belvedere Deck aft. Smoking is prohibited in all other areas including cabins, balconies, and on excursion motorcoaches. All included hotel rooms are requested by Voyages to Antiquity as non-smoking; however this is not always possible and Voyages to Antiquity cannot be held responsible if the guest’s preference is not available on arrival.

Valet service is available for laundry and pressing. A laundry bag and order form are provided in your cabin.

CURRENCY, PAYMENTS AND GRATUITIES ON BOARD A “cashless” system is operated on board Aegean Odyssey with all purchases charged to your cabin account. The final account can be settled in UK$ or US$ at the end of the cruise. Visa, MasterCard and American Express credit cards, and Travellers Cheques can be used for settlement; however American Express cardholders will be charged a 2% surcharge. Personal cheques and debit cards cannot be accepted. Gratuities for the services you receive on board Aegean Odyssey from your cabin steward and dining room staff are included in your cruise fare. Naturally, guests at their own discretion may wish to show their appreciation to individuals offering exceptional service. Please note that a service charge of 12.5% is automatically added to your account for any bar service.

ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES Cabins and suites feature European 2-pin round outlets with 220 voltage. Hair dryers are provided in your cabin and electric rollers, curling irons, electric shavers, and other small appliances can be used. Adapters/converters are available on

COMMUNICATIONS Aegean Odyssey is fitted with the latest satellite communication technology and direct dial telephones in all cabins. There is also an internet centre on Belvedere Deck and charges are based on connection time.

CHILDREN Voyages to Antiquity cruise programmes are destination focused and designed for adults. There are no facilities for children on board Aegean Odyssey.

DINING ARRANGEMENTS Dining arrangements on Aegean Odyssey are flexible as both restaurants have an “open seating” policy with meal times arranged to suit the ship’s time in port and the shore excursion programmes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the Terrace Café, while lunch and dinner only are available in the Marco Polo Restaurant. On days when full-day shore excursion tours are operated, lunch will only be available in either the Terrace Café or Marco Polo Restaurant. Reservations can be made for dinner in the Marco Polo Restaurant.

TERMS & CONDITIONS Please read our terms and conditions carefully: 1. The contract The contract exists between you and Voyages to Antiquity (UK) Limited (the Company) once we have received your signed booking form and accepted the required deposit payment and we have sent you a confirmation/ invoice. The terms and conditions apply to all passengers named on the booking form and the person signing the booking form warrants that he or she is authorised to do so. All correspondence will be conducted with the lead person named on the booking form. 2. Deposits and final payment A deposit of AU$ 1,000 per person or 10% of the total holiday cost (whichever is the greater), along with the completed Booking Form is required to secure your reservation. NZ$ deposit amount will be confirmed at time of booking. Your Travel Agent may also add their own separate Booking Fees at time of deposit. Final balance is due 90 days prior to departure. Full payment must be made at time of booking if made within 90 days of departure. We reserve the right to cancel your booking and apply the relevant cancellation charges (detailed below) if we do not receive all payments at the due time. All Travel Documents are only issued after final payment has been received by the company. FLY FREE offers are subject to availability and capacity controlled and may require additional deposits and or funds to be paid to ensure air ticketing conditions are met. 3. Changes by you Should you wish to make a change to your confirmed reservation you must notify us in writing as soon as possible. Whilst we will try to assist, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so. When we can, a AU$100 per person amendment fee (AU$200 within 90 days) is payable plus any other charges imposed by your Travel Agent. A change of sailing date by the passenger within 90 days prior to departure will be treated as a cancellation. Your Travel Agent may also charge administration fees separately to Voyages to Antiquity. 4. Cancellation by you You need to notify the Company in writing as soon as possible if you or any member of your party needs to cancel your cruise holiday, cancellation fees as indicated will be calculated from the date this letter is received by Voyages to Antiquity. Travel Insurance All International passengers should have fully comprehensive travel insurance valid from the date of deposit being made. We suggest you discuss with your Travel Agent the various insurance policies available. Policies can be purchased that provide protection in the event of trip cancellation, interruption, personal illness, injury, medical and baggage protection. Verification of your travel insurance policy may be required by Voyages to Antiquity. 6. Itinerary Changes The holidays featured in this brochure are planned many months in advance. Occasionally, events can occur that will require changes (including cancellations) to be made to the published itineraries – both before and after bookings have been confirmed. Some changes are minor, but occasionally they can be a significant change. Cancellations of, or changes to, itineraries may be made for a number of reasons including (but not limited to) war, civil unrest, industrial disruption/strikes, natural disasters, adverse weather conditions, adverse travel advisory warnings issued by Governmental organisations, insufficient bookings or to maintain and protect the safety of passengers, crew and the ship. A significant change with alternative arrangements, or cancellation and refund A significant change is defined as a change to either your initial embarkation port or to the disembarkation port from that in your published itinerary to a port in a different country and advised to you at least 15 days prior to your travel departure. You can choose to either accept the alternate arrangement(s) which we will advise to you, or to cancel your booking and receive a refund of moneys that you have paid to the travel agent for the services that were to be provided by Voyages to Antiquity.

Changes to any Port of call in your itinerary Changes to the order, or substitution, of any dates or times at the Ports of call in the published itinerary are not considered a significant change and do not entitle you to any refunds or compensation. Normal cancellation fees will apply should you choose to cancel when advised of these Ports of call changes prior to your travel departure.

The ship’s captain is responsible for the safety of the ship, passengers and crew. The captain has absolute discretion in making any alterations during the cruise to the published itinerary as the captain considers necessary and no compensation or refunds apply.

The Company is not to be held responsible for any act, event or omission during the time passengers are not aboard the vessel. The Company acts only as an agent for the supplier of off-ship services such as airlines and other off-ship transportation carriers, meals, shore excursions, accommodations, air ambulance and shore-side physicians. These may limit or exclude liability. Claims other than for personal injury, death and illness are limited to a reasonable amount.

Your rights in all other situations In all other situations, neither Voyages to Antiquity nor the travel agent or any of their affiliates, subsidiaries, employees or agents have any liability to you and you will need to ensure that your travel insurance will compensate you for any and all delays, cancellations, or changes to any part of your total travel itinerary that occur. This includes any airline or ground arrangements that you may have. 7. Consideration for others We expect all passengers to have consideration for other people. If in our reasonable opinion the behavior of any passenger is likely to cause damage, upset or distress to any third party or damage to property, the Company reserves the right to terminate that passenger’s cruise without prior notice. In these extreme circumstances no refunds will be made and the Company will not pay any expenses or costs incurred as a result of the termination of the cruise. The departure of the ship from any port will not be delayed for passengers who are not on board by the published departure time. 8. Fitness and Eligibility The focus of the cruises featured in this brochure is on the extensive programme of included sightseeing and to fully participate in this you need to be reasonably fit and have no walking difficulties. In any event your mobility should not be an impediment to others on the guided tours. We also reserve the right to refuse to accept a booking without giving a reason. 9. Liability The liability of the Company and any other party that may be involved in providing services in connection with any of the holidays in this brochure may be limited

10.English Law The conditions form part of the contract with the Company and any disputes arising out of it are governed by English Law. All proceedings shall be within the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. 11.Independent Travel Arrangements Voyages to Antiquity is not responsible with regard to air or land travel or accommodation arrangements made using non-refundable, restricted travel or frequent flyer air tickets or frequent traveler hotel accommodations. This exclusion of liability includes the consequences of delays in the arrival at any airport, hotel, or port location that may occur when passengers who have purchased a cruise only holiday are using independently arranged air or land travel or when changes in travel arrangements may need to be made due to changes Voyages to Antiquity may make to the embarkation or disembarkation ports and the time of embarkation and disembarkation. The Passenger Ticket/Passage Contract contains full terms and conditions for these exclusions. 12.Final Travel Documentation Travel documents including any air charter tickets are issued only after passport details have been received and final payment has been made to Voyages to Antiquity. In most cases the final documentation is sent no later than 30-21 days prior to scheduled departure. It is the responsibility of the passenger(s) and for his travel agent to verify that the full name(s) on any cruise, land, or air charter arrangements and reservations are the same as listed on his/her passport. Voyages to Antiquity is not responsible for cancellation or pre-bookable fees

imposed by any supplier due to incorrect names provided by the travel agent or guest. 13.Services provided by Independent Contractors All shoreside tours and services described in this brochure or on the website including air charter, hotel, transfers and excursions are provided by independent contractors. Voyages to Antiquity acts solely as ticketing agent for all shore side activities and has no legal obligation or liability of any kind to guests for acts or omissions in connection with or arising out of arrangements with independent contractors, including but not limited to airline carriers, ground/tour operators, and hotels since they are neither agents for nor employees of Voyages to Antiquity. 14.Luggage Handling All baggage must conform to and will be handled in accordance with the regulations and restrictions of airlines, government security requirements, and third party suppliers. Charges or fees relating to the carriage and the handling of luggage excluding porterage at the pier and to/from the Voyages to Antiquity vessel are the guests' responsibility. Voyages of Antiquity reserves the right to search guest luggage at any time and to refuse any items that might be considered dangerous. All handcarried luggage and personal effects are the responsibility of the guest at all times. Voyages of Antiquity is not responsible for the loss or damage to guest luggage. Baggage insurance as part of your travel insurance policy is strongly recommended. Please refer to the Passenger Ticket/Passage Contract for the full details of the Voyages to Antiquity Luggage Policy. 15.Tipping on board Please note that gratuities for cabin and restaurant staff on board Aegean Odyssey are included in your fare. However, a service charge of 12.5% is automatically added to your account for any bar service. 16.Errors & Omissions While Voyages to Antiquity makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of information in this brochure its promotions and as displayed on the website Voyages to Antiquity reserves the right not to honor any published fares that it determines were erroneous due to printing, electronic or clerical error.
