YOUR JOURNEY
Day 1 London to Singapore Overnight flight to Singapore. Day 2 Singapore Arrive Singapore Airport and transfer to hotel. Balance of the day at leisure. Day 3 Singapore Singapore could be said to be the city that Sir Stamford Raffles built. It was his vision that identified Singapore as the perfect port for British trade and in 1819 he persuaded Sultan Hussein to cede it to the British. Singapore’s fortunes flourished until it fell to the Japanese in World War II but after post-war independence, the energy and dynamism of Singapore’s people created one of the great modern cities of Asia. Discover more of the city-state’s fascinating history on a guided tour that includes the Thian Hock Kheng Temple, the National Orchid Gardens and the city’s colonial heritage. Day 4 Singapore Morning at leisure in Singapore. You also have the opportunity to join a tour exploring the multi-cultural heritage and culture of Singapore. Alternatively, you could choose to discover Singapore’s amazing horticultural treasures on a

incredible murals. Built in the 1870s, the Asokaramaya temple may look rather commonplace from the outside but its interiors are stunning.
Two nights in Singapore
“Gardens of the Bay” trip. In the afternoon, board Aegean Odyssey and depart for Malacca, Malaysia. Day 5 Malacca Malaysia Malacca was the centre of the Malay world in the 15th and 16th centuries. It fell to the hands of the Portuguese in 1511 and centuries of colonisation by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British have influenced the architecture of the town. This rich history comes to life as you tour the main colonial sites including the ruined Portuguese fort “A Famosa” and St Paul’s Church. Day 6 Penang Penang was part of the Malay sultanate until 1786, when Captain Francis Light

built a fort at the site of present-day Georgetown and managed to get the island ceded to the British East India Company. You will spend the afternoon exploring the island, visiting the massive reclining Buddha and museum. Days 7-9 At sea Relax as the ship makes its way to Colombo. Day 10 Colombo Sri Lanka Colombo is the commercial capital and, with a population of over 500,000, Sri Lanka’s largest city. This afternoon you will head into Colombo for a tour that includes the Pettah Bazaar and the Asokaramaya Buddhist temple with its

Day 11 Colombo (Kandy) Today’s tour takes you out of the city on a drive through Sri Lanka’s stunning hill country to the town of Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth containing the famous dental relic of the Buddha. The entire temple complex covers a large area and you will visit the most important areas including the Alut Maligawa shrine, the Audience Hall and the World Buddhism Museum. Day 12 At sea Take it easy as Aegean Odyssey sails for the subcontinent. Day 13 Cochin India Situated in the State of Kerala, Cochin has a remarkable history: here you will see the oldest church in India and palaces from the days of the Raj. It was here in 1524 that the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died and his body was entombed in the Chapel of Santo Antonio until it was moved to Portugal in 1538.
Day 14 Mangalore With its languid and tropical atmosphere, Mangalore is a delightful stop on your way up the west coast of India. Today, this mellow port thrives, exporting 75% of India's coffee and the bulk of its cashews. Visit a local processing plant and learn about this popular nut. Continue to the beautiful Hindu temple dedicated to Gokarnath, another name for Shiva. Finally, visit St Aloysius Chapel, with its remarkable biblical frescoes. Day 15 Marmagao (Goa) Old Goa, founded by the Portuguese, is home to churches dating back to the mid16th century. During your morning’s tour, you will visit the Basilica of Bom Jesus. Built in the 16th-century the Basilica of Bom Jesus is where St Francis Xavier, Goa's patron saint, is entombed in a marble mausoleum. Continue your sightseeing with a drive through Panjim, the relaxed state capital, and a stroll along the narrow streets past wonderful old villas to savour the tranquil essence of Goa. Day 16 Mumbai Immerse yourself in the swirling contrasts of India's economic powerhouse. View the Taj Mahal, Agra

Capture the flavour of spiritual India at the ISKON Krishna Temple. Continue past the Parsi Tower of Silence to explore India's ancient heritage at the Prince of Wales Museum with its lovely gardens, grand loggias and fine collections of sculptures, miniatures and Eastern art. On the return, enjoy a photo stop before the 262-foot-high Gateway of India, overlooking the Arabian Sea.
Amber Fort, Jaipur
Days 17/18 Mumbai – Jaipur Disembark Aegean Odyssey and fly to Jaipur to begin your land tour of India’s Golden Triangle. Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur is a city of palaces built from rose-coloured stone. You will visit the Maharaja’s City Palace, and also see the magnificent Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds). Another highlight is the Amber Fort with its lavish interiors.
of the construction and the result is an epic poem in red sandstone, briefly the capital of the Mughal Empire. Because the city was deserted for most of its existence, the buildings are well preserved. Today this majestic ghost town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a unified architectural ensemble blending Hindu, Persian and Indo-Muslim traditions. Continue by road to Agra and check in at your hotel.
Day 19 Jaipur – Fatehpur Sikri – Agra Leave Jaipur by road and head for Fatehpur Sikri. Built in the sixteenth century by Akbar the Great in gratitude for receiving a male heir, the city was then abandoned 14 years later when the water supply failed. The emperor personally supervised details

Begin your sightseeing with a tour of the victory tower known as Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. En route, admire the President's
Palace, Parliament House and India Gate designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Later, you will visit Raj Ghat or Royal Steps. This tranquil site, marked by a simple black marble slab, is where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated following his 1948 assassination by a Hindu fanatic. The area is now a park and national shrine. THE SEASONS OF TROUBLE
ISBN: 9781846686047
ISBN: 9781781686003
Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781-1826) was the charismatic and persuasive founder of Singapore and Governor of Java. An English adventurer, disobedient employee of the East India Company, utopian imperialist, linguist, zoologist and civil servant, he carved an extraordinary (though brief) life for himself in Southeast Asia.
An unforgettable account of Sri Lanka’s long civil war and the mayhem of peace.
Abdul Sheriff
In this comprehensive survey Vidya Dehejia, a leading authority on Indian art, explains and analyses not only such key early developments as the great cities of the Indus civilisation, the serene Buddha image, the intriguing art of cave sites and sophisticated temple-building traditions, but also the luxury of the Mughal court, the palaces and pavilions of Rajasthan, the churches of Portuguese Goa, art in the British Raj, and issues taking art into the twenty-first century.
THE INDIAN OCEAN
ISBN: 9781849044264
The Indian Ocean was the first venue of global trade, connecting the Mediterranean and South China. This book offers an anthropological and historical examination of the impact of maritime trade on wider society – as a conveyor of goods, but also of ideas and peoples.

Vidya Dehejia INDIAN ART
ISBN: 9780674032194
On December 26, 2004, giant tsunami waves destroyed communities around the Indian Ocean, from Indonesia to Kenya. Beyond the horrific death toll, this wall of water brought a telling reminder of the interconnectedness of the many countries on the ocean rim, and the insignificance of national boundaries. "A Hundred Horizons" takes us to these shores, in a brilliant reinterpretation of how culture developed and history was made at the height of the British Raj.
ORIGINAL LETTERS FROM INDIA Fay was a contemporary of Jane Austen, but her adventures are worthy of a Daniel Defoe heroine. Her letters unfiltered, forthright, and often hilarious bring the perils and excitements of an earlier age to life.
