YOUR JOURNEY
Day 1 London to Cape Town Overnight flight to South Africa. Day 2 Cape Town Arrive Cape Town Airport and transfer to Aegean Odyssey. Day 3 Cape Town Your included morning sightseeing tour includes an unforgettable trip up Table Mountain by cable car. The journey from the base to the summit takes just four minutes and affords spectacular views as you ascend. Table Mountain gets its name from the flat topped central massif of the mountain, which viewed from the city is surrounded by Devil’s Peak on the left, Lion’s Head on the right, and Signal Hill in the foreground. They form a sort of amphitheatre that encloses the city centre and some of the older suburbs. On your way back to the ship, you’ll enjoy an orientation tour of the city, including the colourful and historic houses of the Bo-Kaap (Malay Quarter), the Convention Centre, Adderley Street with statues of Jan van Riebeeck and Bartholomeu Diaz, the Castle of Good Hope, City Hall in Darling Street, the Dutch Reformed Church, Slave

Follow the Garden Route from Mossel Bay
Lodge, St George’s Cathedral and the Cape Provincial government buildings in Wale Street. In the afternoon, you have the opportunity to take an optional boat ride to Robben Island. For over four centuries, Robben Island has been a place of punishment for exiles and prisoners as well as a place of confinement for lepers, lunatics and the sick. Since 1960, it has become synonymous with the political struggle against apartheid in South Africa. Political prisoners of the past have included Nelson Mandela and poet Dennis Brutus. The last political prisoners were released in 1991 and on the 1st of January 1997, the
Close encounters, Botlierskop Game Reserve
Robben Island Museum opened its doors to the public with a number of the former political prisoners becoming island guides. During your visit you will see the old leper colony, the quarry where political prisoners laboured, and Nelson Mandela’s cell. In 1999, Robben Island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 4 Cape Town Enjoy free time in Cape Town this morning before a noon departure for Mossel Bay. Day 5 Mossel Bay (Garden Route) This morning an included excursion takes you into the majestic Outeniqua Mountains via scenic passes that lead from
or v isit www.voya gestoan tiqui ty. com
semi-desert terrain to fertile valleys. Taking the beautiful Garden Route east, you’ll pass ancient forests, golden beaches and craggy peaks to reach Oudsthoorn. In an oasis-like setting, much of the town’s architecture reflects the opulence of the Ostrich Feather Boom from 1860 to 1914 when it supplied ostrich feathers to Europe. This afternoon, there’s an optional visit to Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, a well-stocked, free roaming private game reserve, which provides visitors with the opportunity to view African wildlife in its natural habitat. There are currently 26 animal species and more than 1,800 animals in total in the 3,000-hectacre reserve. Visitors have an excellent chance of experiencing close encounters with white rhino, Cape buffalo, blue wildebeest, giraffe, Cape mountain zebra, eland, giraffe, impala and lions. Other animals that may be seen include bontebok, Cape bushbuck, common grey duiker, Cape grysbok, honey badger, rock hyrax, kudu, nyala, porcupine, waterbuck and steenbok.
Days 6/7 At sea Relax and enjoy on-board lectures as the ship makes its way to Richards Bay. Day 8 Richards Bay The town of Richards Bay lies at the sea edge of an ancient floodplain, almost halfway between Durban and Kosi Bay and it acts as a gateway to Zululand and Maputaland. Here, we enjoy an included drive to Hluhluwe Game Reserve. Proclaimed a game reserve in 1895, Hluhluwe has since become well-known for its small population of the rare white rhino. In addition to rhino, the reserve has a spectacular variety of bird and animal life, including elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, blue wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, cheetah, mountain reedbuck, kudu and warthog. The reserve preserves not only the wildlife of Zululand but also some of the indefinable charm and traditions of the natural surroundings. Enjoy your buffet lunch at the Hilltop Restaurant, surrounded by beautiful scenery. After lunch, depart on another exciting game drive before returning to the ship.

Day 9 Richards Bay Today you’ll discover the wildlife from the water as you visit the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enjoy a cruise on beautiful Lake St Lucia. Your boat affords the best views of the nesting sites of crocodiles and hippos that make their home in the estuary. This is also home to 526 different kinds of bird species, favourites of which are the African Fish Eagle and the Mangrove Kingfisher. Enjoy time ashore in Richards Bay before a late evening departure. Day 10 Durban More laid-back than Cape Town and the centre of South Africa’s sporting life,
Durban is a mix of grand colonial buildings and beautiful art deco architecture. Durban is South Africa’s third-largest city and it has undergone a major makeover leading up to the 2010 World Cup including a revamped waterfront. The renewal of the waterfront area has been such a success that there are plans to extend the waterfront promenade right down the south coast. Your included sightseeing travels inland into the beautiful hills of Kwazulu Natal, in the heart of which nestles the province’s capital city, Pietermaritzburg. The city, encompassing old world charm, country living and beautiful Victorian architecture, is now a modern South African town and

home to over 600,000 people. You’ll visit the Natal Museum, containing spectacular sections dedicated to African mammals, snakes, birds, reptiles and amphibians, fish, insects, geology and palaeontology. Then continue to the historic centre of Pietermaritzburg with its legislative buildings, museums and galleries. Here at Churchill Square you’ll see City Hall – allegedly the largest red brick building in the southern hemisphere – as well as the Assembly Building and the Supreme Court. Also learn about Mahatma Ghandi’s famous incident here while viewing his bronze statue at the Square. Return to the ship in Durban.

Addo Elephant Park
Day 11 At sea Soak up some sunshine and unwind as the ship sails to Port Elizabeth. Day 12 Port Elizabeth Port Elizabeth is South Africa’s fifth largest city and is located on the Indian Ocean coast half-way between Cape Town and Durban. Also known as the friendly city and the windy city, it tends to live up to both names. Today, we visit the Addo Elephant Park, which consists of over 51,000 hectacres of bush country and is home to over 450 elephants. Although it belongs to the same species as the African Elephant, the reddish Addo Elephant is
smaller with more rounded ears, while the females generally have no tusks. On a game drive through the park by coach, you will hopefully be able to encounter this rare animal, as well as a variety of other game, which was recently introduced to the reserve. This includes lion, hyena, cheetah, zebra, eland, kudu, red hartebeest and wild dogs. Return to the ship in Port Elizabeth. Day 13 At sea Time today to reflect on the marvellous experiences of the last few days. Day 14 Cape Town Disembark and transfer to Cape Town Airport for the flight home.
Peter Mawby ornithologist and research ecologist, has travelled widely and is a regular and successful lecturer. Whilst at school he was part of one of the first expeditions to visit SouthEast Iceland to study the breeding distribution of the Great Skua and subsequently organised his own expeditions to the Shetland and Faroe Islands as an undergraduate at Cambridge University. Such was his skill and expertise that he received his licence and has been ringing birds for well over fifty years. He is now in great demand to speak to enthusiasts from the RSPB. When not lecturing Peter welcomes the opportunity to enhance passengers’ experiences of the wildlife around them out on deck, with onboard commentaries and on tour from the ship. Lecture topics THE MIRACLE OF MIGRATION – Recent research techniques, including the use of geo-locators, are revolutionising our ability to track animals and birds as they cross vast areas where other tracking methods are unlikely to provide data. THE LEGACY OF ANGALIFA, THE NORTHERN WHITE RHINOCEROS – The death of an animal in a zoo in San Diego would usually pass without comment, but if their passing threatens the survival of a charismatic African species, special measures must be taken. The northern white rhino is not the only member of “the Big Five” to be under threat.
Meet our guest speakers and special guest who will be accompanying you on this voyage. Here is a taste of what to expect...
Major General Stephen Carr-Smith Major General Stephen Carr-Smith spent 33 years in the Army. During 1962-1982, he served 10 years in Germany at the height of the Cold War. From 1988-1995 he was serving in NATO, most of which was spent helping develop the “New NATO” after the demise of the Warsaw Pact and the USSR. His last appointment was as the Deputy Director General of the NATO Communications Agency in Brussels. Furthermore, from 2003 to 2013 he was the President of the Stragglers of Asia Cricket Club, he led tours to Sri Lanka and India. Lecture topics THE BOER WAR PART 1 - HUMILIATION AT MAJUBA – Between December 1880 and March 1881, the Boers inflicted a humiliating defeat on the colonial British in defence of the newly created Boer Republic of the Transvaal. THE ZULU WAR – In 1879, the over-confident colonial British suffered their worst ever defeat at the hands of men without guns at the Battle of Isandlwana
David Price-Williams worked for the Smithsonian Institution as an archaeological field surveyor on excavations in the Near East before directing his own field research in the same area through the early 1970s. David has just retired after thirty-seven years lecturing on the Archaeology of Western Asia (Eastern Mediterranean) at the Institute of Archaeology for the University of London Extra Mural Department. He is the author and co-author of numerous academic papers on the area. Lecture topics IMAGES OF POWER: THE AWAKENING OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT – Southern Africa has tens of thousands of rock art sites, and recent research has enabled the real meaning of prehistoric rock art to be deciphered and understood. Looking at the most recent evidence, what can we learn about our ancestors, in Africa and in Europe? THE AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION IN AFRICA – Over the last two thousand years new tribes have brought farming into southern Africa, changing the whole way of life of its people and totally altering the landscape and the politics, and culminating in the culture of Great Zimbabwe.

Robert Ross
H. N. Quinnen
A CONCISE HISTORY OF SOUTH AFRICA
ISBN: 9780521720267
This book provides a succinct synthesis of Southern African history from the introduction of agriculture about 1500 years ago up to and including the government of Thabo Mbeki. Stressing economic, social, cultural and environmental matters as well as political history, it shows how South Africa has become a single country.
Bill Nasson THE BOER WAR: THE STRUGGLE FOR SOUTH AFRICA ISBN: 9780752460222 The Boer War was a costly colonial conflict between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics in South Africa.
Sinclair et al SASOL BIRDS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
ISBN: 9781770079250
“Sasol Birds of Southern Africa" remains the region's most comprehensively illustrated and trusted field guide.
R. W. Johnson SOUTH AFRICA’S BRAVE NEW WORLD: THE BELOVED COUNTRY SINCE THE END OF APARTHEID ISBN: 9780141000329 Nelson Mandela's inauguration as president of South Africa in 1994 seemed to usher in an age of peaceful, rational change. This book explains how this was not to be. It reveals how Thabo Mbeki and those around him brought South Africa close to 'failed state' status and explores the implications for its future.
STARLIGHT IN THE RING
ISBN: 9781782795322
Nelson Mandela called for forgiveness and reconciliation. When your heart is at stake, that's hard to do... Growing up in South Africa in the 1950s, Betty Baker's whole childhood has been shaped by the tyranny of the Apartheid Laws. As the daughter of native farm-labourers, her future is already mapped out for her. Betty's dreams are larger than Burgersdorp. Each of the sixteen laws brings hate, hardship, exile and murder, but Betty's passion and ambition drives her on. Her first love affair brings tragedy, and later, a choice: will she let the events of her past determine her future? Will she seek love or fall for revenge?
George Carey KNOW THE TRUTH – A MEMOIR
ISBN: 9780007120307
The Archbishop of Canterbury recalls his life and his spiritual quest. This remarkable and candid memoir marks the first time in history that an Archbishop of Canterbury has written his autobiography; it tells George Carey's story from growing up in Dagenham to his experiences in the RAF in the early fifties, of how he was to become Bishop of Bath and Wells and thereafter attained the position of Archbishop of Canterbury itself.
