JULY 13 LONDON, ENGLAND Embark Aegean Odyssey in the port of Tilbury on the River Thames near London, with a 2pm sailing. Plenty of time this afternoon and evening to settle in as we sail down the Thames and on through the English Channel.
JULY 14 GUERNSEY, CHANNEL ISLANDS Morning at sea, before mid-afternoon arrival in picturesque St Peter Port, the capital of Guernsey, a town of cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways, filled with Regency buildings. Choice of half-day excursions: Enjoy a Town Walk in St Peter Port, with a tour of the 13thcentury Castle Cornet. Originally built on an island and now reachable by a 19th-century raised walkway, you will also have free time to explore the ‘Story of Castle Cornet’ exhibition. Alternatively, take A Scenic Island Drive showcasing Guernsey’s beautiful coastline, including a visit to the delightful Little Chapel, built in 1914 to replicate the grotto at Lourdes and possibly the smallest church in the world. Sail in the evening.
JULY 15 FALMOUTH, ENGLAND Breakfast arrival in the West Country of England, a charming place steeped in history, from the days of smugglers to the founding of the Royal Navy and the D-Day landings. Here you will have a choice of tours: Tresco Abbey Gardens

An extended half-day tour visits The Eden Project, the world’s largest global garden containing plants and trees from all over the world, inside a glass dome large enough to fully enclose the Tower of London. Alternatively, enjoy our Picturesque Poldark excursion. Winston Graham’s Poldark novels are the inspiration for this excursion, taking you to some of the places that inspired the author, alongside locations where the new BBC television adaptation was filmed, including Portreath, Chapel Porth, Towanroath engine house, St Agnes, Perranporth and Truro. DESTINATION TIP
Breakfast arrival in the second largest of the Isles of Scilly, Tresco, located off the coast of Cornwall, for a morning or afternoon tour to the world-famous Abbey Gardens. This spectacular collection, on the site of an old Benedictine Abbey, features more than 20,000 exotic plants from all over the world.

JULY 17 DUBLIN, IRELAND Morning at sea. Lunchtime arrival in Dublin, one of Europe’s finest capital cities, where City Highlights on our afternoon excursion here include the Customs House, the Old Parliament House and the nation’s oldest college, Trinity. We will then continue to the National Gallery of Ireland, the Government Buildings, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin Castle, the city’s Cathedrals and the General Post Office, scene of the 1916 uprising and birthplace of the Irish nation. JULY 18 DUBLIN, IRELAND Day two in Dublin for a choice of optional tours:
Malahide Castle
Cornwall’s coastline boasts a myriad of picturesque bays. During the summer months, the blue-green waters could easily be mistaken for the likes of the Mediterranean. Within a 15-minute walk/ a short taxi ride away from Falmouth town, one of Cornwall’s favourite beaches – Gyllyngvase beach – can be found. This blue flag beach with its arc of golden sand and tempting waters is the perfect place to spend a couple of hours during your free afternoon in Falmouth. Just hope for good weather!
A full-day panoramic tour showcasing The Best of Ireland’s Countryside, begins in Glendalough Valley, where a wealth of historic monuments is scattered around two lakes including

the Round Tower, Cathedral, stone churches and crosses. After lunch, we will visit the house and gardens of the 18th-century Powerscourt estate. Alternatively, enjoy a morning Coastal Drive to Malahide Castle. Dating back to the 14th century, this medieval estate has one of the finest collections of period furniture and portrait paintings in the country. The tour then continues with a scenic drive to Portmarnock and the 16th-century Abbey Tavern in Howth. Afternoon at leisure in Dublin. Isle of Skye

Alternatively, spend a morning exploring Anglesey’s Coastline. In a region with a rich history, this tour will take you to the tiny islet of South Stack, through the old capital of North Wales, Aberffraw, to the town with the longest name in the world – Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Or spend the morning at Caernarfon Castle, one of the historic centres of Wales, where successive Princes of Wales are invested, including the current Prince Charles, giving you a fascinating insight into one of the most impressive castles built by Edward I, thought to have been modelled on those of Constantinople.

One of the United Kingdom’s largest and most important cities, A Day in Liverpool begins at the world-famous Beatles’ Cavern Club, with the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King and the Anglican Cathedral other highlights.
Breakfast arrival in the Manx capital, for a choice of morning sightseeing: Tynwald Hill has been in continuous use for well over a thousand years, laying claim to being the heart of the oldest self-governing nation in the world. Here, you will learn more about the history of the island, before visiting the city of Peel, where the magnificent ruins of Peel Castle dominate the landscape. Alternatively, enjoy a drive through the Scenic Southern Isle of Man, beginning with the legendary Fairy Bridge, where it is considered bad luck to pass without saying Laa Mie (good day) to the fairies. Castletown is the site of the medieval Castle Rushen and we will also visit Port Erin, followed by Peel and Tynwald Hill.

JULY 21 ISLE OF ARRAN, SCOTLAND Early morning arrival at the Isle of Arran, the largest island in the Firth of Clyde Choice of tours: A Trip Around Arran will take you through a scenic landscape filled with red deer to Lochranza and its ruined castle. Then head south to Blackwaterfoot, Lagg and Lamlash, which has an ancient spiritual heritage stretching back to the 6th century. Alternatively, Lochranza Distillery is the only producer of whisky on the island, historically acclaimed for having some of the best waters in Scotland. This tour will showcase why the island is such a great place for producing the perfect Malt. Depending on demand, some departures may be in the afternoon. Time at leisure before a late afternoon sailing.
JULY 22 OBAN, SCOTLAND Early arrival in Oban, for a choice of morning excursions: The spectacular Inveraray Castle has been the family seat of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell, since the eighteenth century. This beautifully presented country house has a fine collection of family portraits, tapestries, furniture and an impressive armoury. Alternatively, Scottish Highlands and Glencoe will take you through one of the last remaining wildernesses in Europe,
Rannoch Moor, to the Glencoe Visitor Centre to learn more about the infamous 1692 massacre, with dramatic Castle Stalker another highlight.

JULY 23 KIRKWALL, ORKNEY ISLANDS Breakfast arrival in Orkney’s capital, a bustling market town full of atmospheric twisting wynds (lanes) and a cathedral founded as a final resting place for the relics of St Magnus.

JULY 24 SCRABSTER, SCOTLAND Breakfast arrival, for a choice of three morning excursions: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, first saw The Castle of Mey while mourning the death of her husband, King George VI. Falling for its ruined isolated charm, and hearing it was about to be abandoned, she decided to purchase

it. As part of your guided tour, you will be able to learn more about why this property was so close to her heart. Alternatively, the village of Bettyhill and the Strathnaver Museum offer a fascinating insight into the Highland Clearances, one of the darkest episodes in the history of Scotland.

Or, a scenic drive to John o’Groats and Duncansby Head takes you to the most northerly inhabited settlement, renowned as the starting point for the many embarking on the famous ‘End to End’ journey to Land’s End in England, some 876 miles away.
Or take a scenic Isle of Skye drive to the Museum of Island Life, stopping first at the famous Old Man of Storr and Kilt Rock. The fascinating museum then consists of seven traditional thatched cottages offering a unique insight into 19th-century crofting. Sail at 2pm.
JULY 26 GREENOCK, SCOTLAND Your cruise ends in Greenock, the port of Glasgow on the River Clyde, where you disembark Aegean Odyssey after breakfast.

JULY 25 PORTREE, SCOTLAND Morning arrival in the colourful harbour of Portree, meaning “Port of the King”, a name it received following a visit by James V in 1540.

Choice of three morning excursions: A drive around Scenic Skye to learn more about the fascinating history of the island’s turbulent geological history, from the rugged volcanic plateau of the north to the ice-sculpted peaks of Britain’s most dramatic mountain range, the Cuillin. Alternatively, Dunvegan Castle and the Cuillin will take you to the seat of the chiefs of the Clan MacLeod to see some priceless heirlooms. When there is a significant amount of walking involved in an excursion, the walking symbol has been indicated. Generally, this applies when at least 1.5-2 hours of the excursion is made up of continuous walking. This voyage has many excursions that involve walking on uneven, gravelly and possibly muddy terrain, and if needed, walking aids are highly recommended. OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS DUBLIN, Ireland The Best of Ireland’s Countryside Full Day - $125 To the south of Dublin is County Wicklow. Known as the “Garden of Ireland”, this tranquil landscape is a mass of domed granite mountains penetrated by deep glens, containing some of the finest scenery in Ireland. Our full day panoramic tour here begins in the lovely valley of Glendalough, where a wealth of historic monuments and ruined churches are scattered around two lakes. Established by St Kevin in the 6th century, Glendalough became a famous school of learning, inhabited by thousands of students from Ireland, Britain and Europe. One of Europe’s finest examples of Round Tower architecture can be found here, alongside a Cathedral, stone churches and decorated crosses.
Powerscourt

After lunch at a hotel or restaurant, we will then visit the magnificent gardens at Powerscourt, on the River Dargle. This 18th-century estate, owned by the Slazenger family, spans twenty hectares and is a lovely
blend of formal gardens, five sweeping terraces, statuary and ornamental lakes, together with secret hollows, rambling walks and walled gardens, containing over two-hundred variations of trees and shrubs. The large manor house at Powerscourt is equally breathtaking and enchanting. Designed by the German architect Richard Cassels in 1740, it was built around an existing castle dating from 1300. Although it was gutted by fire in 1974, it has since been thoroughly restored and is now home to an outlet of Avoca Handweavers. Having enjoyed the beauty of this wonderful demesne, we will then pass through some more delightful scenery on our return drive.
Howth. Nestled against the ruins of Howth Abbey, you will be struck by its old-world charm, which makes for a truly warm welcome. Driving over the summit of Howth Head, you will then enjoy some wonderful views of Dublin Bay and the Dublin Mountains beyond, before returning to port via Dollymount and Clontarf.

Coastal Drive and Malahide Castle Half Day - $75 Malahide Castle dates back to the 14th century and alongside its 250 acres boasts a new exhibition and interpretative centre. The Secret Gardens and Victorian glasshouse have only recently become open to the public, while the castle also features one of the finest collections of period furniture in the country, alongside an outstanding collection of portrait paintings. Continuing along the coast to Portmarnock, location of the world-famous Golf Club, there will be time to stop at the 16th-century Abbey Tavern, in the fishing port of

Major General Stephen Carr-Smith British Army, Retired Stephen Carr-Smith spent 33 years in the Army. During 1962-1982, he served 10 years in Germany at the height of the Cold War. From 19881995 he was serving in NATO, most of which was spent helping develop the “New NATO” after the demise of the Warsaw Pact and the USSR. His last appointment was as the Deputy Director General of the NATO Communications Agency in Brussels. On leaving the Army in 1995, he worked for a company providing security and mine clearance services in remote and hostile countries; was the Senior Military Advisor to an operational analysis company owned by British Aerospace; and was the Chairman of a company developing opportunities to marry-up Russian technology with western finance and production. From 1999 to 2006, he was the Ombudsman for Estate Agents, a national appointment dealing with redress and financial compensation for buyers and sellers of residential property throughout the UK. Since 2009, he has been the Chairman of Help Moving Office, an internet company run by his second son that has now
expanded into America. He has had a number of other involvements, like being an Honorary Colonel of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) – an all women, uniformed volunteer body that has supported the British Army for 100 years. From 1997 to 2003, he was a Colonel Commandant of the Royal Signals. From 2003 to 2013, he was the President of the Stragglers of Asia Cricket Club, with its origins in the Punjab in the 1920s – and, accompanied by his wife, he led tours to Sri Lanka in 2004 and to India in 2007.

Professor Sandy Primrose MBE Biotechnologist
Hugh Ellwood was educated in the classics and went to university in Rome to study philosophy. It was here that art and history became a reality and after four years he returned to Manchester to study architecture. He pursued a career as an architect with Building Design Partnership, the largest multi-discipline design organisation in the UK. For 21 years he was a partner in the practice, working on housing, school and hospital projects such as the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham and the New General Infirmary at Leeds.
Sandy Primrose is a biologist by training and has degrees from the University of Strathclyde and the University of California. After undertaking research in Australia he returned to the UK and took up lecturing positions at the universities of Edinburgh and Warwick. In 1981 he made a career change by moving to industry where he held senior management positions, first in a pharmaceutical company and later in diagnostic, food and environmental companies. He started working as a biotechnology consultant as well as being an adviser to various UK governmental organisations (Health Protection Agency, Food Standards Agency, and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). He was awarded an MBE in 2010 for services to the Food Standards Agency.
For some years Hugh was an external examiner in Architecture at the University of Manchester as well as a visiting lecturer in the history of art and architecture at the University of Central Lancashire. He has also lectured extensively to various societies and organisations on art and architecture and is a NADFAS accredited lecturer During the 1980s he began to sketch with watercolour as a complement to the pursuit of architecture. He prefers to work in watercolour, ink, pencil and pastel. His subjects are mainly buildings, the landscape and the relationship between the two. He prefers to work outdoors, rather than in the studio.
Sandy still consults widely as well as being Chairman of a number of small, high technology companies. He has written a number of very popular scientific textbooks but is particularly proud of his recent publication entitled Plants, Poisons and Personalities which is aimed at lay audiences. Sandy’s passion is gardening and the halfacre garden of his house between London and Oxford is filled with unusual trees and shrubs.
Did you know that: On the Isle of Arran in 1650, Oliver Cromwell’s Roundheads took control of Brodick Castle to control the Firth of Clyde. Daffodil growing on the Isles of Scilly was established to offset the decline in local shipbuilding. Trinity College in Dublin was founded in 1592 as the ‘mother’ of a new university (University of Dublin) modelled on the collegiate system of Oxford and Cambridge – but only one college ever was built.

Our library is beautifully appointed and houses a well-stocked collection selected by the experts at the Oxford-based bookseller, Blackwell’s. Newspapers are delivered by satellite and are available in the library. Relax on the sun deck and cool off in the outdoor pool. Pamper yourself at the Athena Health Spa,
where you will find wonderful therapies and treatments to revive you. Our hairdressers and beauty centre is also on hand, and there’s a full fitness studio and early morning yoga sessions to set you up for the day.

EXCURSION INFORMATION Voyages to Antiquity’s cruises include shore excursions in most ports of call. Some ports offer multiple opportunities for sightseeing, and in these instances, Voyages to Antiquity offers carefully selected excursions – some as an alternative to the main included excursion, some at an additional cost.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON TOUR These sightseeing programmes are outstanding but can be challenging. Visits to archaeological sites require walking over uneven surfaces, up and down multiple steps, and therefore a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Some passengers may decide to take a break on certain days and explore the environs around the port. Look for the symbols alongside each tour description to get a good idea of what can be expected on each excursion. Tour durations are approximate and, to be sure you get the most out of the excursion and to avoid overcrowding, the sequence of site visits and operating times may vary. The on-board staff will brief you nightly on the expected plans for the following day. All departure times and meeting points will be advised in the Daily Journal on board. Some countries require you to carry certain documents ashore and this will be advised on board at the appropriate time. Please note that we reserve the right to change, cancel or substitute an included excursion at any time. Glencoe

OUR SHORE EXCURSION TEAM Our Shore Excursion Manager and Graduate Assistants are on hand to make sure you get the most out of your shoreside experience. Informative briefings will be given regarding the excursions and ports of call, and the team will be on hand at the Reception Desk to answer any further queries you might have. During the excursions, although we endeavour to have a representative on each bus as much as possible, this cannot be guaranteed. The role of our ship’s excursion staff when ashore, is primarily to ensure the smooth operation and delivery of our excursion product in conjunction with the local guide and operator. This often means rotating between groups and working with the local guides. Kindly note that, although keen to assist when required, our team are not responsible for providing walking support or making sure everyone in the group is present.
OUR GUIDES It is one thing to see The Ring of Brodgar and quite another to see it in the company of a good guide who can share his/ her knowledge and passion for history. All of our shore excursions feature qualified English-speaking guides who seek to enlighten your visit with their expertise.
SHOPPING From Waterford crystal in Ireland to whisky and shortbread in Scotland, the crafts of this part of the world have evolved over the centuries. While these shore excursions focus on the history, culture and archaeology of the area, some offer the
chance to visit local workshops and observe demonstrations. Voyages to Antiquity has no connection with any shopping establishment and does not assume responsibility for purchases made ashore. We also recommend insurance on anything you choose to ship home.
On occasions, substitutions need to be made due to opening/ closing times of some sites/museums, but all possible is done to ensure schedules operate as described. If a change is made, guests will be advised with their final documents or at the shore excursion briefings on board.
TRANSPORTATION
Note: For passengers on Grand Voyages, availability of included and optional excursions in London/Tilbury and Greenock will be advised on board.
Various modes of transportation are used, depending on the excursion. Most motorcoaches are deluxe, air-conditioned vehicles unless unavailable in that port.
CLOTHING TIPS
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Closed-toe and sturdy walking shoes are recommended for the excursions on this itinerary. Waterproof jackets and sweaters are also recommended as the weather can be very unpredictable in the regions visited. One should be prepared for all weather conditions and pack accordingly.
Itinerary Changes The cruise and tour programmes featured in this brochure are planned many months in advance. Occasionally changes have to be made to the itineraries due to circumstances beyond the control of Voyages to Antiquity.
Further details will be advised in the on-board briefings, along with weather predictions.
Responsibility The responsibility of Voyages to Antiquity and the operator of the vessel is strictly limited according to the Terms and Conditions set forth in the Passage Contract that you receive prior to embarkation.
