JUNE 6 NICE, FRANCE Embark Aegean Odyssey in Nice this afternoon for an evening sailing.
JUNE 7 CANNES, FRANCE Early morning arrival in the French Riviera resort of Cannes. An included morning tour to the charming Provençal hill town of St Paul-de-Vence. This medieval village is in an idyllic spot above the glorious Loup River and has long been beloved by seekers of the extraordinary. Take a stroll around the narrow cobblestone lanes, lined with boutiques, museums and art galleries, and enjoy some history with a visit to the main gate and ramparts dating back to 1536. Alternatively, take a full-day optional sightseeing trip to Monaco & Monte Carlo. Beginning with a drive past the aristocratic palaces of the Promenade des Anglais in Nice and the Middle Corniche, you’ll then head to Monaco and explore the foot of the Rock and the Old Town, with a guided walking tour past the Prince’s Palace, the Oceanographic Museum and the Romanesque Cathedral. You’ll also drive along part of Monaco’s famous Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit to Casino Square, where you may visit the attractions of your choice. Overnight in Cannes aboard Aegean Odyssey with tenders running during the evening so that you can spend the evening ashore if you wish.

As we leave Cannes after breakfast, you will be able to enjoy the many facilities of the Aegean Odyssey during a relaxing sail along the Cote d’Azur, passing Antibes and Saint-Tropez on our way to Marseilles.

JUNE 9 MARSEILLES, FRANCE
Encircled by double walls, Carcassonne stands exactly as it did in the Middle Ages. Here you will visit the battlements, towers, castle and mighty portcullis to learn more about military architecture. Then enjoy lunch before transferring to the second major place of the region. Once a leading port, a Visigoth capital and in the Middle Ages an important Episcopal centre, Narbonne was founded by the Romans during the second century BC. There are several superbly preserved monuments to see here including the Cathedral, canal and archaeological museum.
Early morning arrival in Marseilles and a choice of full-day tours: Avignon’s Papal Palace begins with a 90-minute scenic drive through the Provençal countryside to the town which rose to glory in the Middle Ages. With views of the Rhone River and Avignon’s much-sung-about bridge, Pont St-Benezet, the highlight of your visit will be a guided tour of the Pope’s Palace, founded by Pope Clement V in 1309. Then take a walking tour through Palace Square and Horloge Square, before enjoying a leisurely lunch and time on your own to wander or shop. Alternatively, Marseilles & Aix-en-Provence combines these two cities into another full day, beginning in “Vieux Port,” the Old Port of Marseilles and continuing along the J.F. Kennedy Corniche to Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica, consecrated in 1864 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. From the Basilica, descend to the Longchamp Palace and Museums of Fine Art and Natural History. Then in the afternoon, your visit to Aix-en-Provence starts with a walking tour of the Cours Mirabeau, a wide avenue shaded by trees that was built in the 1600s on the site of the city’s medieval ramparts. Finally, enjoy the different architectural styles of Saint Sauveur Cathedral, with its Romanesque nave, Merovingian baptistery and Gothic section. Evening sail.
A full-day tour encompassing two cities with Roman roots, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Carcassonne, followed by landlocked Narbonne.
Alternatively, enjoy an extended morning tour to Montpellier and Flaugergues Castle, begining with a guided walk through the town to appreciate the medieval buildings and private mansions, the 14th-century Cathedrale de Saint Pierre and the lookalike Arc de Triomphe, situated at the end of Rue Foch. Enjoy some free time to explore before driving to Chateau de Flaugergues, property of the “de Colbert” family since 1696. Count and Countess Henry de Colbert still live at the castle, a French historical monument, so you will be given a tour of their home before finishing in the cellars for some tasting of the wine produced at the Chateau’s vineyards.

JUNE 11 BARCELONA, SPAIN A choice of three morning sightseeing tours is included here: Velasquez to Miro will take you to the National Art Museum of Catalunya (MNAC) to see the gallery’s extensive collection of masterpieces including pieces by El Greco, Velazquez, Rubens, Gaudi, Picasso and Miro. Barcelona
Barcino: the Roman City begins with Barcelona’s original city walls, towers and gates, en route to Plaza Ramon Berenguer and Plaza Nova, to see the remains of a 1st-century temple dedicated to Caesar Augustus. Then descend to a unique underground museum and one of Europe’s largest underground archaeological sites, for a glimpse of everyday life in Roman Barcino. This tour may operate in the morning and afternoon due to limited capacity. Lastly, Panoramic Barcelona offers an immersive drive through the city to see the Columbus Monument, the Old Port, the Arc de Triomf and Ciutadella Park, including a photostop outside Gaudi’s masterpiece, Sagrada Familia. There will then be some free time in the afternoon, or you may take an optional tour of Gaudi’s Golden Works, including a panoramic drive and photostop outside Sagrada Familia before arriving at Passeig de Gracia, where Gaudi’s houses of La Pedrera and Casa Batllo are located. After a tour of Casa Batllo – time permitting – you will then have the chance to admire the Olympic Stadium on a panoramic drive around Montjuic Mountain.

JUNE 12 VALENCIA, SPAIN CRUISE VIDEO
A choice of two morning tours available in Valencia: The Valencia City Tour begins at the fourteenth-century church of the Knights Templar, before moving to the Modernist North Station followed by the Serranos and Quart Towers, remnants of the old wall that protected Valencia for 500 years. Afterwards, an outside visit to the Central Market is the prelude to a true highlight and one of the best examples of Gothic civil architecture in the world, the old silk market of La Lonja. Finally, you will visit Round Square, followed by the main Cathedral and Basilica, and the Gothic Generalitat Palace. Alternatively, Panoramic Valencia offers a driving tour passing some of the city’s most outstanding buildings, including the Marina Real Juan Carlos, the Columbus market, Plaza de la Virgen, Bullring, North Station and City Hall, followed by some free time at the Cathedral. You will then be driven to La Lonja, the Central Market, the Serranos and Quart Towers, and the City of the Arts & Sciences complex, on your return to Aegean Odyssey.

JUNE 13 CRUISING THE MEDITERRANEAN DESTINATION TIP TANGIER The afternoon in Tangier has been left free so that you can explore independently. Tangier, which was a focal city in one of the recent James Bond films – Spectre – is often referred to as the ‘gateway to Africa’. As well as a walk through the winding streets of the Kasbah and perhaps a browse of the traditional market stalls in the Grand Socco, it is worth enjoying your afternoon tea-time shoreside. Moroccan mint tea is made with fresh mint leaves and a touch of sugar. All in all, a deliciously refreshing drink.

JUNE 14 MALAGA, SPAIN Choice of tours: A full-day excursion inland to Granada and the Alhambra Palace, including the Royal Palace and the Generalife, takes you to one of the most magical places in the world and the most outstanding symbol of Moorish heritage in Spain. Begun in 1238, the Alhambra was the last Spanish capital of the Moors until it fell to the Christian armies of the 15th century. Alternatively, you may take the half-day tour, Panoramic Malaga and Picasso Museum, which includes a drive through the town to the famous Gibralfaro Castle and the Picasso Museum, beneath which can also be found the archaeological remains of the city’s Phoenician origins. Once docked, there will be some leisure time to explore on your own, but be sure not to miss a live Flamenco dance-show on board Aegean Odyssey in the evening.

JUNE 15 TANGIER, MOROCCO Arrive at breakfast in North Africa for a morning tour of Tangier’s Highlights including a photostop at the Cape Spartel Lighthouse, a warning beacon to ships for over a century. In Tangier, visit the Medina (old town) and grand Mosque, built on the foundations of the Roman temple to Neptune; then explore the Petit Socco, covering what used to be the Forum. The bustling Kasbah is situated on the highest part of the Medina in an area that has been the preserve of palaces and castles for thousands of years. Here your guide will walk

All of our excursions require a basic level of fitness, although some are more strenuous than others. On this voyage, many of the excursions visit towns with cobbled streets, often with uphill sections. When there is a significant amount of walking involved in an excursion, the walking symbol has been indicated. Generally, this applies when at least 1.5-2 hours of the excursion is made up of continuous walking. ‘Carcassonne and Narbonne’ and ‘Granada and the Alhambra’ are both difficult excursions in terms of walking, and make for long days. OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS CANNES, France Monaco & Monte Carlo - $85 Full Day Enjoy superb full-day sightseeing on the French Riviera, including Nice, the “pearl” of the Cote d’Azur, and a drive to Monaco and its glamorous capital, Monte Carlo. Your adventure starts with a drive along Nice’s palm-lined Promenade des Anglais, lined with aristocratic palaces. Then continue on a stunning drive along the Middle Corniche road, set above cliffs that rise vertically. Savour panoramic views of Villefranche, Cap Ferrat and the village of Eze, set on a craggy peak high above the Mediterranean. This breathtaking ride takes you from France to the independent Principality of Monaco.

Your first stop is at the foot of the Rock. Ascend to its top by escalators and elevators to discover the historic Old Town. Your guided walking tour takes you past the Prince’s Palace, the Oceanographic Museum and the 19th-century Romanesque Cathedral in which Prince Rainier and Princess Grace had their fairy-tale wedding.
Wander the ancient covered alleyways of Old Town, before continuing to Monte Carlo. Drive along part of Monaco’s famous Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit to Casino Square. In this haven for the rich and famous, you have time on your own to take in the attractions of your choice, be it the Grand Casino, the opulent Hotel de Paris, the chic boutiques – or you can just soak up the atmosphere for future daydreams after your return to the ship. BARCELONA, Spain Gaudi’s Golden Works - $65 - Half Day Antoni Gaudi’s work is admired by architects around the World as being one of the most unique and distinctive architectural styles. His work has greatly influenced the face of Barcelona’s architecture and you will see stunning examples of Gaudi’s work all around the city centre. Departing from the pier, you will start with a brief panoramic drive to the Sagrada Familia (outside visit), Gaudi’s most emblematic work and the greatest example of his genius. This famous structure has become a symbol of Barcelona all over the world. Next, you will head to Passeig de Gracia, the famous boulevard where Gaudi’s houses of La Pedrera and Casa Batllo are located.

The present Casa Batllo is a result of a total refurbishment of an old previous conventional house built in 1877. Some people regard Casa Batllo as a building that embodies a unique fusion of art, architecture and design. It is celebrated for its visual solutions and its creative use of materials and colour. Casa Batllo has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list since July 2005. After your tour of the interior, you take a short walk to La Pedrera for a photostop. Once you arrive, you will look in vain for straight lines and admire the sumptuous curves of the façade, the wrought iron balconies with forms of plants, the paintings on the ceilings of the foyers, and much more. Before returning to the ship – time permitting – you will have the chance to admire the Olympic Stadium while enjoying a panoramic drive through the Montjuic Mountain.

Alan O’Cain Artist, Poet and freelance Lecturer Alan studied History at Lancaster University, specialising in the development of Western Science, Art and Philosophy, and has an MA in Education. He now works as a professional artist and poet and delivers much-loved public talks and performances. He has twice been a visiting fellow and artist-and-poet-in-residence at Durham University (2012-13 and 2015-16) and has given lectures in many prestigious venues and on cruise ships travelling the globe. Alan has been involved in creative collaborations with Glyndebourne Opera and the Royal Shakespeare Company and produced art and poetry in-residence in a number of historical and international venues, including the preserved studio of Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (painter of “The Scream”) and the former prison cell of Austrian artist Egon Schiele. He is currently working with German composer Søren Nils Eichberg on words for a new classical song-cycle for voice and symphony orchestra and creating painted artworks for
a sixteen-year long project (exhibition as a work-inprogress, Manchester Cathedral, 2017). He has held solo exhibitions at the Hay Festival and at other locations in the UK and abroad. In art, poetry and his uniquely idiosyncratic and entertaining talks, he explores themes taken from art history, mythology and literature and is inspired by music, modern art, theatre, science and his own life.

Ernest Rea Broadcaster Ernie Rea is a celebrated broadcaster who specialises on the history of religions and the way that faith impacts on the contemporary world. His regular radio programme, Beyond Belief, was awarded the prestigious Sony Gold Award for the best Speech Programme on British Radio. He worked for the BBC for 22 years in a variety of production and editorial roles. From 1989 -2001 he was Head of Religious Broadcasting for the BBC, responsible for all their television and radio programmes nationally and locally. During this time, he spent much time in the United States, brokering co-production television deals with leading American broadcasters. He was closely involved in a variety of key national events, including the Funeral Service for Diana, Princess of Wales. He is in wide demand as a speaker at a wide variety of events, including international inter faith conferences, literary festivals, and academic symposia. In 1997 he was personally awarded the Gold Medal of the International Council for Christians and Jews for

EXCURSION INFORMATION Voyages to Antiquity’s cruises include shore excursions in most ports of call. Some ports offer multiple opportunities for sightseeing, and in these instances, Voyages to Antiquity offers carefully selected excursions – some as an alternative to the main included excursion, some at an additional cost.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON TOUR These sightseeing programmes are outstanding but can be challenging. Visits to archaeological sites require walking over uneven surfaces, up and down multiple steps, and therefore a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Some passengers may decide to take a break on certain days and explore the environs around the port. Look for the symbols alongside each tour description to get a good idea of what can be expected on each excursion. Tour durations are approximate and, to be sure you get the most out of the excursion and to avoid overcrowding, the sequence of site visits and operating times may vary. The on-board staff will brief you nightly on the expected plans for the following day. All departure times and meeting points will be advised in the Daily Journal on board. Some countries require you to carry certain documents ashore and this will be advised on board at the appropriate time. Please note that we reserve the right to change, cancel or substitute an included excursion at any time.

OUR SHORE EXCURSION TEAM Our Shore Excursion Manager and Graduate Assistants are on hand to make sure you get the most out of your shoreside experience. Informative briefings will be given regarding the excursions and ports of call, and the team will be on hand at the Reception Desk to answer any further queries you might have. During the excursions, although we endeavour to have a representative on each bus as much as possible, this cannot be guaranteed. The role of our ship’s excursion staff when ashore, is primarily to ensure the smooth operation and delivery of our excursion product in conjunction with the local guide and operator. This often means rotating between groups and working with the local guides. Kindly note that, although keen to assist when required, our team are not responsible for providing walking support or making sure everyone in the group is present.
OUR GUIDES It is one thing to see Carcassonne and quite another to see it in the company of a good guide who speaks your language and can share his/her knowledge and passion for history. All of our shore excursions feature qualified English-speaking guides who seek to enlighten your visit with their expertise.
SHOPPING From fashions and perfumes on the French Riviera to ceramics and lace products in Spain, the crafts of this part of the world have evolved over the centuries. While these shore
excursions focus on the history, culture and archaeology of the area, some offer the chance to visit local workshops and observe demonstrations. Voyages to Antiquity has no connection with any shopping establishment and does not assume responsibility for purchases made ashore. We also recommend insurance on anything you choose to ship home.
TRANSPORTATION Various modes of transportation are used, depending on the excursion. Most motorcoaches are deluxe, air-conditioned vehicles unless unavailable in that port.
CLOTHING TIPS Sunhats and sunscreen are recommended when participating in excursions – especially when exploring archaeological sites or walking through towns/villages. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended for most of our excursions. For the following excursions, respectful dress is required as sites of a religious nature are included: Marseilles and Aix-en-Provence and Valencia City Tour. As a rule, this means shoulders and knees should be covered. This is also encouraged when in Morocco in accordance with cultural and religious sensitivities. Further details will be advised in the on board briefings, along with weather predictions.
VISITS TO SITES/MUSEUMS On occasions, substitutions need to be made due to opening/ closing times of some sites/museums, but all possible is done
to ensure schedules operate as described. If a change is made, guests will be advised with their final documents or at the shore excursion briefings on board. Note: For passengers on Grand Voyages, availability of included and optional excursions in Nice and Seville will be advised on board.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS Itinerary Changes The cruise and tour programmes featured in this brochure are planned many months in advance. Occasionally changes have to be made to the itineraries due to circumstances beyond the control of Voyages to Antiquity.
Voyages to Antiquity expressly disclaims all responsibility of any nature whatsoever for any loss, damage or injury to property or person resulting from air, rail, motorcoach or any other form of transportation other than that actually provided by the Voyages to Antiquity vessel.
Responsibility The responsibility of Voyages to Antiquity and the operator of the vessel is strictly limited according to the Terms and Conditions set forth in the Passage Contract that you receive prior to embarkation. Guests with Special Needs The tour programmes featured in this brochure include extensive sightseeing and to fully participate each guest must be reasonably fit and have no walking difficulties.
