ATHENS Catania
Historian John Julius Norwich’s epic history is the inspiration for this Mediterranean journey, featuring maiden visits to Catania and Portimao, with guided excursions included in the price for every port of call. Along the way you will be taken back in time to the Minoan settlements of Akrotiri in Santorini and Knossos in Crete, as well as the Maltese capital. Enjoy a walking tour of Sicily’s Greek and Roman ruins, including the Roman amphitheatre of Augustus and the 2nd-century BC Altar of Hieron – as well as the Palatine Chapel and Cathedral in Palermo. Explore Chania’s Old Town on foot and learn all about the city’s history by visiting architectural legacies from its turbulent history. Take a panoramic drive to some of the outstanding sites of Malaga and Moorish Spain, before sampling sherry in Jerez. Savour the breathtaking vistas of the Sagres peninsula and the Algarve in Portugal, then arrive in Funchal, the capital of Madeira, for a sightseeing tour of Winston Churchill’s favourite retreat, Camara de Lobos.

Travel with the Experts John Julius Norwich Historian and Broadcaster Joining the British Foreign Service after studying at New College, Oxford, John Julius served in Yugoslavia and Lebanon, and as a member of British delegation to the Disarmament Conference in Geneva. In 1964, Norwich left the diplomatic service to become a writer: his publications include The Normans in Sicily, a three-volume history of Byzantium and A History of Venice. This career move was a stroke of good fortune for Voyages to Antiquity as John Julius’s wonderful history of the Mediterranean, The Middle Sea, inspired the founder of Voyages to Antiquity to offer our unique brand of cruising in this fascinating region. Lord Norwich is also Chairman of Colnaghi, the oldest fine art dealers in London, amongst many other prestigious appointments in the world of fine art and music. He was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian order in 1993 and we are delighted to welcome him back on board for this special cruise.
