April 2015

First of all, we would like to thank Jamie Hayes for his program on both print competition and Image submission for the CPP. I surely learned a lot from it because I am working towards that degree as we speak. We would also like to thank Reallife Studio for being a gracious host and providing dinner.

Polly Frye, a true professional and a lady passed away on Saturday, March 21. Polly was a dedicated member of sixty years of the Virginia Professional Photographers Association and was the first woman in in the state to receive the Certified Professional Photography degree. She also earned the degrees of Master of Photographer and Photographic Craftsman from the Professional Photographers of America. We will all miss her greatly.

Polly’s Funeral Arrangements Polly’s service is going to be on Saturday, April 4th at Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg. There will be a gathering after the service at the Ruritan building in Keezletown. David Lee Michaels will be sending a notice to everyone once all the details are known. Cards may be sent to Polly’s VMRC address. Cards continuing to come to my home address (Jim Sanders) will be fine as well. Polly Frye 1585 Pine Court Harrisonburg, VA 22802

Meeting Change:

Due to Easter and Spring Break our April meeting has changed to: Monday, April 13, 2015 (Time TBA)– please see below: Our regularly scheduled meeting date, which is Monday, April 6, will be changed to Monday, April 13, 2015.

We felt that Easter Monday would not be the best date as many families may be traveling or have family visiting for the Easter weekend.

I hope you will be able to join us on Monday, April 13 as we have planned a social get together in honor of an outstanding member of our VPPA family who (most of you already know) passed away recently. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 4, 2015 but we know that many fellow photographers will not be available to attend. We thought it would be nice (thank you Pete Wright) to meet socially to remember Queen Polly and how much better our association is today because of her hard work and dedication to the industry we all love and share. Below is an excerpt from her obituary:

“Clara Nelson “Polly” Earman Frye passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Sentara Rockingham Memorial Hospital from complications from a fall at her home. Polly graduated from Keezletown High School in 1938 as a valedictorian of her class. In 1980, she received an associate’s degree in business from Blue Ridge Community College. Polly and her husband Charles bought the Dean-Kaylor studio from Mr. Lupton Kaylor and it reopened on March 1, 1951 as Charles and Polly-Photographers. The next year they attended their first Virginia Professional Photographers convention. Polly was the first woman in Virginia to receive a Certified Professional Photographers Degree. During the course of her career she also earned the degrees of Master Photographer and Craftsman Photographer from the Professional Photographers of America. She earned Fellow of Photographer from

the Virginia Association the highest degree awarded by the state. At the Virginia Convention in February 2012, Polly was crowned “Queen of the Convention” for her sixty years of dedication to the association. During those years she not only served as president but was the first executive secretary and recently retired after 24 years as executive treasurer. She treasured the lasting friendships made during those years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Polly Frye VPPA Scholarship Fund in care of Don Aittama, 1960 Floyd Circle, McGaheysville, VA 22840; Quota Club’s Scholarship in care of Joyce Moyers, 1284 Shank Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22802; Asbury United Methodist Church, 205 South Main Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 or a charity of your choice.”

We will meet at Angelo’s Italian Restaurant, 11643 B Midlothian TPKE, Midlothian, VA 23113 (in the Shopping Center at the corner of Midlothian TNPK and Huguenot/Courthouse Roads).

Please email debbie@reallifeevents.net and let me know if you will be able to attend. One of the stories about Miss Polly was that whenever she attended meetings In the Northern District she would always lag behind and make sure she stayed to break bread with her fellow photographers after the meeting.

You will be able to purchase dinner and we will have a short business meeting and social hour. A menu is provided on Angelo’s website www.angelos-italianrestaurant.com. We will follow up later in the week with menu choices and/or preorders.

Wear purple, bring a smile and know that Miss Polly is looking down on us as we go about continuing to learn, practice and excel at our profession. Hope to see everyone on the 13th,.

The May meeting has also changed due to the SEPPA Convention (Flash 2015) to Monday, May 4, 2015 at 7:00 PM. The location is Wendell Powell Studio, 906 N. Parham Rd, Richmond, VA

PPA Council Elections Coming Up

The VPPA board nominates 4 people to serve in these positions. Those currently serving have to option of being nominated again. Anyone wishing to serve can submit your name for nomination. If you wish to be considered, submit your name to Renny Cave at rbcave319@gmail.com.

Make your mark on your photographic association and participate in PPA Council elections! This spring you have the opportunity to nominate and elect PPA Council members for 2015-2018. What's PPA Council & what does it do?

PPA Council is a delegate body that oversees PPA's bylaws. As individuals, councilors assist members and fellow photographers; and as a group, they make the decisions that guide the association. Council elects members to serve on the Nominating Committee and PPA's Board of Directors. Finally, Council also approves PPA degree recipients and maintains PPA's merit system. Volunteer PPA members are voted in to represent their respective states and be leaders in the industry for a 3-year period. Serving as a PPA Councilor is not an honorary position; it's an important responsibility.

Get Involved! The nominating and voting process is electronic; so stay tuned for links and instructions. In the meantime, here are a few Q&A's:

What are the requirements to run? - First, you must be a Professional Active, Additional Active, Life or Retired member of PPA. Second, you must be nominated and agree to carry out the responsibilities, if elected.

How can I nominate someone or be nominated? - Any 5 PPA members (who are Professional Active, Additional Active, Life or Retired members) can nominate a qualified member. In addition, PPA Affiliate organizations (state and local) may nominate a qualified member. Starting April 15 nominations will be accepted online at PPA.com/CouncilElections.

How many people can I nominate? - There is no limit to the number of members you can nominate, but during elections you will only be allowed to vote for the number of councilors allocated to your state.

What dates should I keep in mind? - Council nominations open April 15 and must be submitted no later than May 1. Online voting will take place May 15 - June 15. The new Councilors will then take office on July 1 for the 2015 – 2018 PPA Council.

So please consider running for election, nominating someone and most importantly: casting your vote! You will be getting another email in the next few weeks with a link to vote! PPA is working towards elevating the industry. Be part of the difference and Be More Involved.
