Governor’s message from Betsy Bailey… “A picture is the expression of an impression. If the beautiful were not in us, how would we ever recognize it? Ernst Haas
We just wrapped up an awesome convention with interesting and helpful speakers, a great Trade Show, amazing images in print competition and a fun Safari party. I'd like to thank Jeff Lubin and Don Aittama for presenting exceptional programs at the convention. Also, many of the Northern members have good reason to celebrate! But first, I'd like to welcome and acknowledge our newest Northern VPPA members; April Bennet from Afton, Donna Gentry (staff with Bob Shiflett) from Staunton and Misty Higgins from Winchester. New members are what keeps the VPPA strong and thriving! Welcome! I'd also like to recognize and congratulate the achievements of the following Northern District members. • Jim Carpenter received the National Award which is the most prestigious award given by the VPPA. • Jim Sanders received the SEPPA Award which is considered to be second only to the National Award. • Rosanne Rainville and Jeanette Burkle received their FP degrees.
Governor Elizabeth Bailey, AFP portraitartbyelizabeth@comcast.net
• Don Aittama and I received the AFP degree. • Les Miller earned his PPA Masters degree this past January at Imaging USA.
We certainly have some talent in the Northern District. The following members received scholarships to PPA affiliated schools.
Lt. Governor Jeanette Burkle, FP jeanette@galiephotography.com Secretary Kathy Kupka, FP
• Lisa Roberts – Gary Carter Scholarship • Michael Patch – Archie McDearmid Scholarship • Pam Soper – East Coast School Scholarship • Stephanie McFarland received the Randy Searle Scholarship Award for having the highest total print case score among all first time entrants.

The learning opportunities, awards, scholarships and recognition are some of the many reasons why professional membership is so vital. We owe it to ourselves, our clients and to the photographic industry to improve our craft and offer the best quality photography services available. Much of what I know about photography I attribute to the VPPA, its members and the support and educational opportunities I have received through this fine organization. I am proud to be a part of such a great organization and especially a district that represents so much talent. Thank you one and all! 2
a first-rate convention—thoughts that follow Jim Sanders 2013 is showing itself to be a good year to be a member of the VPPA. I say this even as we watch our membership numbers decline. Looking at the larger picture, I suspect we are experiencing the natural ebb and flow that can be found over time in any organization. All just seems to be more dramatic when there is an imbalance in the coming and going. Looking on the brighter side, there has never been a more opportune time for photographers to be a part of a professional organization. And...the state associations are best for being right there where you live. You can reach out and touch us! How do we grow going forward—one of the most helpful things we can do is to reach out to our fellow non-member photographers. Monica met Misty at Imaging USA. I took a blind dive and met April. If each of us found just one aspiring or established photographer… I wish to express my deep appreciation for being honored as this year’s recipient of the SEPPA Award. Now, with a few days to reflect, I think back to an article I wrote for the VPPA magazine describing the story of an old truck that won an award for me in print competition. Upon returning home from the convention, I returned to the truck and found that it was no longer living in the crumbling shed that had been its home for so many years. I was disappointed but thankful that I had the opportunity to photograph this truck before it was taken away. For the article, I was inspired to use the story of the truck to illustrate what we all know in our own way. Don’t take any part of life for granted and don’t let a day go by without reaching out in ways that benefit others even when in the smallest of ways. Let’s all continue to grow because of what we do to support the VPPA which in turn allows our organization to best serve us.
