Culpeper

Hey Guys, Thanks for asking me to come and speak. Here’s a little info about me and what we’ll be doing. I have been a member of VPPA since 2000. This will be my 17th year running a full time studio in Roanoke. I can honestly say I would not be where I am today without VPPA. Every time I go to a monthly meeting I learn something new. I hope I can show you a few things that will help you improve your images. We will be doing an outdoor session with a High School Senior. We will be working mid-day, with a couple of SB type flashes. I will share with you how we pose and light during this time of day. When we break for lunch, we can talk about how we market to seniors and some of the products we sell. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday the 14th . Kevin

Looking Toward IPC / Terrific Programs Coming!

by Jim Sanders

Well, the scores are in. For all who did not receive a Seal of Approval at SEPPA, listen carefully to the judge’s critiques (if you signed up for these). Their input can help you prepare for the International Print Competition in August. For me, this was my first time entering in SEPPA competition. In preparing, I definitely wanted to enter my three merit images from the VPPA competition. My fourth SEPPA entry had scored a 79 at VPPA. During the trade show on Sunday, I asked Mark McCall to critique this 79 print. He gave three recommendations, and I followed through with all three. Interestingly, it was this image that brought me my first Seal of Approval. It went from its original 79 to an 88! The other three… well, I definitely will be listening to the SEPPA judge’s critiques when they become available. And just like with Mark’s suggestions, I will listen carefully. This is a great advantage of entering in the SEPPA competition. We get to submit our images for judging prior to IPC—hopefully to receive Seals of Approval… and if not, the opportunity is there to make adjustments before submitting to IPC. Good luck to all in August! We have some great Northern District programs coming up. For this month, plan to come to Culpeper on Monday, April 14th for a day with Kevin Hurley. Professional photographers need to have a thorough understanding of posing and lighting. Learning from Kevin will be one more way to increase your knowledge about these very important skill sets. Next month on May 19th, Lisa Carter will be at Jim Carpenter’s studio in Charlottesville for a day of newborn baby photography. This is going to be an important program for all who are currently involved with photographing newborns. And for those who are considering adding newborn photography to your business, you will certainly want to attend Lisa’s program. The date has not been set yet, but we are looking forward to a program this year from Andrew Clark. Andrew will be teaching us about combining video and portraiture. This will be a great opportunity to become more knowledgeable about a concept that is gaining in popularity.
