Message from Kathy Kupka… I feel like I can now relax knowing that Pope Francis is safe on his plane headed back to Rome. What a wonderful visit. I wish I could have seen him in person and photographed his winning smile! I wonder how many photographs WERE taken of him. Well, this is my last month as Governor of the Northern District of the VPPA! Over the last year, we've learned so much from our award winning photographers/speakers at our monthly meetings i.e., Barbi Barnum sharing her "Stylized Session," Jim Carpenter's "The 26th Bar" and his and Jeanette Burkle's helpful print critique; Jeanette's architectural "Soup to Nuts"; Jamie Hayes and Mary Fisk-Taylor's "Best of Both Worlds," and Mike Patch and Andrew Clark's Simple Video for photographers. We had a Christmas luncheon and a summer picnic hosted by Deborah Schmitz. All of the above couldn't have been done without the help of our whole team of district officers. On November 1, Barbi Barnum will be moving into the Governor’s position. Andrew Clark will be our new Lt. Governor and Deborah Schmitz will be joining the Northern District officers as secretary. Jim Sanders will be beginning his seventh year as treasurer and newsletter editor. Jim’s now long-time experience is helpful for on-going matters pertaining to the Northern District. One of my jobs as Governor was to work on the Summer Seminar. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes to put together a successful seminar, so the other District Governors, Sharon Younce, Erin Clark, Jen Chaconas and I "met" for months on Slack. (I never heard of this tool before, but great for "team collaboration" on line). We worked on getting a hotel, member speakers, guest speakers, door prizes, sponsors, a print competition, a used equipment table sale, and best of all, the hospitality suite. It all started the night before the seminar began, Anthony Rumley did a great job with his shoot-out!

We had great speakers, if I have to say so myself, giving my first program at a VPPA seminar which was about what I experienced with self-publishing my "Cancer is Ruff" book. (I have to give extra thanks to Charles Hartman who helped me to relax and set up my power point presentation.) Other member speakers were Doug Mattice "Handling Stalls & Objections," Mike Patch & Andrew Clark "Simple Video for photographers," and Jeff Lubin "Past Client Sales & Marketing & Painter," Guest speakers were Chris Garner and Cathy Anderson "SRS & Volume School Photography," and Sandra Pearce's "Painting Art with Photoshop Only." We also had a great pool party. If you think our members are competitive when it comes to their images, well, you might have seen or been part of the relay races involving hula-hoops and oranges. So many more people to thank who helped to make our Summer Seminar successful: Charles Hartman with AV, Wolfgang Jasper coordinated the the print critique with judges Jim Carpenter, Stephanie Milner and Rosanne Rainville, Jim Sanders and Don Aittama photographed and documented the seminar, and, of course, Margie Hatcher, with the help of her sister, Denise, kept the hospitality suite up and running (to all hours)! Also, thanks to our sponsors Simply Color, Richmond Pro lab and ACI. The next VPPA board meeting will be held in November, and the new officers will be officially sworn in. Since 1998 I've been proud to be a member of the VPPA and PPA. I'm looking forward to seeing old friends and new members at our upcoming meetings and, of course, the Convention in February. It was a great year. The only sad thing that happened while I was Governor was losing Polly Frye. Okay, Barbi, ready to hand over the Governorship to you! Kathy Kupka

The fireside is where we hear stories. These are the stories that help us to understand each other. They tell us more about who we are. They make sense of our history. They inspire us to be our best selves. They soothe our fears. And they make us laugh, even years later when we retell those same stories around another fireside. The fireside is where everyone gathers around, listens more but also has their turn to speak. What is the fireside? Ultimately, it’s where we connect. Welcome to The Fireside Network.”
