From the Governor... The Blue Ridge June/ July meeting on June 30 saw Jamie Hays present an awesome program on how he and Mary Fisk-Taylor have created two very successful photography businesses. One of them is a high-end family and children’s portrait business, the other is a more volume oriented senior and school portrait business. Charles J. Lewis many years ago counseled us to take advice only from those who ARE where you want to be. Having a business that grosses over a million dollars a year certainly qualifies Jamie to advise each of us. If you were there Monday, you know you got good advice. If you missed that program, you really missed a good one. Since that meeting was our combined June/July meeting, our next will be in August. At that meeting, which will be another block-buster program, just so you know (don’t miss it — take
that hint, please), we’ll have our annual election of officers for the next year, and we have yet to find someone to do our monthly newsletter. Yes, this is a call for volunteers. Michael Sink has done an outstanding job this year, and while he leaves big shoes to fill at editor, there are folks capable out there. You know who you are. Volunteer now, don’t make me come ask you! Coming up September 13-15 is the VPPA annual Summer Seminar in Portsmouth. We’ve got some dynamite programs for you, don’t miss it. Monday’s Extra Day for Extra Pay session features Robin Owen, on Boudoir portraiture. She’ll be showing us how to market and sell that work, she’ll be doing posing and lighting with models, and she’ll take us through post processing as well. During this extremely busy season, we hope you are all having some “you” time to spend with your family and friends... As the governors work diligently to organize the Summer Seminar in Portsmouth in September, the Blue Ridge district continues to bring amazing talent to the area. We were very fortunate to have James Hayes from Hayes & Fisk to come and share his expertise on lighting and business/marketing. We were sad to hear that Mary was a bit under the weather, but Jamie did an amazing job covering her information. The Blue Ridge District would like to sincerely thank you for sharing all of your information. We would also like to thank Kevin Hurley for hosting at his studio in Roanoke, VA. We have Beth Jasper coming in to speak on “Pricing”. All of the details will be sent out as soon as we get a date/ venue confirmation. Be sure and read the VPPA on Facebook page to see updates. An email will be sent out also :) One last thing, if you would like for your name to be on the ballot for nominations for the 2015 Blue Ridge VPPA offices, please send me an email directly at jollyjenphotography@gmail.com. We will be voting at our August meeting so we can have a smooth transition at the end of the year!!
