After February statements are finalized, Don Aittama will e-mail the written reports. Don is predicting a large end of year deficit. • Loss of membership is a great concern. Two long time members have paid dues but not late fees. Charles questioned the $30 late fee for membership. Anthony Rumley made a Motion and it was carried to waive the late fees for those two members. • A Motion was made by Jim Carpenter and carried to extend the membership of one member to the end of the year due to personal problems. • New Member Applications – as presented by Don Aittama Don presented applications for 6 new members and 2 former members asking for reinstatement. Anthony brought up the people who have applied for membership and have entered competition but have not yet been accepted. He suggested that they be conditionally accepted until all information is submitted and verified. A Motion was made and carried to accept the new and conditional members. Other Committees • No reports. Old Business: • MARS offered a $500 scholarship. Renny made a Motion to use it as the Randy Searle scholarship. Discussion followed. The purpose of this category is to increase membership. The Enthusiast will only be allowed to participate in print critiques and not print competition. Charles suggested that Master Photographers from the Association be asked to give their input at a separate critique at the seminar and convention. This would be similar to PPA’s program. Spring/Summer Edition

EDITOR’S CORNER By Kitty L. Pugh, Cr. Photog., AFP, CPP The 2014 VPPA Convention has come and gone. If you chose NOT to attend – Party Pooper and shame on YOU! YOU missed a really good time. Kudos to Stephanie for a job well done! Many of you may or may not know, … The VPPA Board has been reviewing and re-evaluating and is constantly searching for ways in which to save money, yet continue to bring to you the same type of quality of membership and benefits to which you have been accustomed. At this year’s annual breakfast/brunch meeting the membership questioned the need to continue to have a printed version of the magazine and a printed Directory. The Board took into consideration the comments made. They ultimately voted to eliminate the printed versions of both. So, … It is time to take the magazine down a new road – the on-line digital version. It is currently in transition so this issue is just a hi-cup to get us by. Hopefully, by the time Convention 2015 (Yes, 2015) rolls around, something a bit more formal will be in place. I ask for your patience as I navigate the learning curve. Here’s a short run down of what you will or will not find in this issue: - There is NO award winning images in this issue. You will need to go on-line to the VPPA website to view them. - There is NO candid convention photos or party photos in this issue. You will need to go on-line to view those. David Lee Michaels will be putting together some photo pages and/or slide shows for your enjoyment. - You will find the award presentation photos from the Convention banquet in this issue and a few other photos of various groups. - Most of the standard articles, columns and messages are included; as is information about Scholarships & Door Prizes, Awards, Degrees, Membership Tabs and up-coming District meetings - You WILL find photos of the New Members, Virginia’s CPP’s, the VPPA Executive Board and our VPPA Group Photo. This issue is basically a ‘stripped’ down version of the old magazine. It is much smaller than previous issues but I anticipate it will grow with time, as the new platform takes shape. There are several articles in this issue that you should be sure to read: Start off with Pat Hansen’s article on Page 6 entitled “Getting a Head Start on Competition” which highlights a few observations that Pat made while working with the judges within the Print Salon; i.e. things judges tend to look for in competition prints, comments about posing, lighting, composition and depth of field. Take notes so you won’t make the same mistakes next year. The Best in Show award this year went to Pete Wright. “The Golden Age” is the cover image for this issue of the magazine. Not only did this image get Best in Show, but it also got the Best Open Album Award and it received a Fuji Portrait Masterpiece Award. Congratulations, Pete, on a job well done! The Photographer of the Year Award, which was previously called the Grand Photographic Award, is presented to the entrant who has earned the most credits from his/her entries. This year the award went to none other than Pete Wright who accumulated 41 credits with his print entries. Congratulations Pete. Nice job! The People’s Choice Award, which is chosen by the members went to “Another Loss” by Jim Carpenter. You can view this image and Jim’s short story about the image on Page 18. Unfortunately, in June the VPPA lost another one of its long time members, a Past Governor, Past VPPA President and Past SEPPA President, Tony Christiana. On Page 4, Tidewater District member Keith Forrest takes a few minutes to share his memories of times spent with Tony from way back when Keith first starting coming to Convention. Doug Mattice always has some great words of wisdom and marketing savvy to share with us. Don’t overlook reading his article on Page 9 entitled “Tips for Becoming Successful in the Photography Business”. Anthony Rumley, one of our PPA Councilors, is throwing out a ‘Personal Challenge’ to every VPPA member. This is your opportunity to possibly get a ‘FREE’ membership; so read his article on Page 11 entitled “Get One!’ to see if you’re up for the Challenge. Robert Holman, Virginia’s SEPPA representative, attended SEPPA’s Convention which was held in Athens, Georgia, in April. In his article on Page 11, Robert runs down some of the important pieces of business that was discussed at the SEPPA Board meeting. Every year at Convention our organization gains some new members and, unfortunately, loses some. This year we lost a few members again but did gain some. Hopefully, we will continue to important our numbers. Please, you ole’ timers, make every effort to welcome our new members and to encourage them to get involved. Please talk up the educational opportunities the VPPA offers. If you’ve had a good experience – won a price, won a scholarship, made a life-long friendship; let them know how much this has all meant to you. Let a prospective new member know about our annual convention and our summer seminar. Tell them that every year at Convention almost $10,000.00 is given out in scholarships and door prizes. Let them know about the great networking opportunities and camaraderie. Let them know how much the VPPA means to YOU. And, New Members - Please remember that your Governors are your liaison for information and your connection to your State Board of Directors. We want to hear your suggestions and concerns. Governors – You should establish phones trees to encourage members to attend monthly meetings. Check to make sure e-mail information for all new members is accurate and up-to-date and that they are receiving their monthly District newsletters. Make a serious effort to stay in touch. It could be the thing that makes all the difference – that personal touch. In an effort to help us continue to stay in touch and to know where and to whom to turn for information, I’ve listed a few info blurbs below: 1st - Changes of Address - All address changes of any kind; e-mail, snail mail, website addresses, etc. need to be sent to Renny Cave, VPPA Secretary at: rbcave@earthlink.net or by mail to: 9909 Chancellor Place, Richmond, VA 23235-2711. With great sadness, VPPA & SEPPA mourn the loss of Tony Christiana To all my friends in the VPPA, I was very saddened to learn of the passing of one of my longest friends in the VPPA. I regret I was unable to make the service, but I'm sure he knows that we all had him in our thoughts and prayers. As Tony was a friend to all, and always had a smile on his face, and loved hearing a good story, I will relate mine of him...

Memories of Tony by Keith Forrest

I joined the VPPA in the summer of 1975, when I had just graduated from high school, or shortly, before, and attended my first VPPA convention a few weeks later. In those days, the convention was always in the summer (which of course made perfect sense - how would you possibly be able, or want - to go swimming in the wintertime! Well, of course, many of the “old timers” - which I am quickly becoming one of, as fewer and fewer are still around before me! , will remember some of the wild stories, and in some places, wild places, that various members at various times DID go swim! - I will leave details out!). That first convention is where I first met Tony. Tony was one of the officers that year. I was just 18, and it was early August at the old Sheraton Motel in Fredericksburg. The rooms were $17.95, and as I only had $60.00 in cash, and no credit card then, I slept in my car the first night so I could afford the next three nights. I was introduced to Tony by my other "Dad" - our beloved and late, Archie McDearmid. Tony took me under his wing, so to speak, (as did Archie), as one of the "new members" and he called me "kid" - which even up until a couple of years ago, he still called me that occasionally. When you reach your 50s, it feels GOOD when someone still calls you that! That first convention I felt like a sponge in a bucket of water. I was trying to soak up everything I could learn, but was also so overwhelmed. How would I learn all this, I wondered? Tony was about as open and nice a guy as Archie, though, at that first convention. I remember that first convention, first meeting him,and not sure what to make of him at first. He had that deep throaty voice, even then, and that really craggy face. Yes, if he hadn't made it in photography, he could have probably gone to Hollywood and made movies. Obviously, not as the leading man, but as a really good character actor - maybe one of the bad guys. Of course, everyone who knew him though, always thought of him as a real teddy bear - one of the nicest guys you could meet. Yea, he could have that crusty demeanor when you first met him, but always had that twinkle in his eye to let you know he was pulling your leg. That first day though, he and Archie sat down at lunch with me and showed me the schedule book. They pointed out which programs I should definitely make sure to go to (which as I knew almost nothing, I tried to go to ALL of them!). That last night, after the banquet, I celebrated in a big way (unfortunately maybe too big)which in case anyone wonders, no, I didn't even know what print judging was, much less had I entered. I was just an 18 or 19 yr old kid. I decided to celebrate SOMETHING, anyway!. We were all sitting around talking, and, of course, Tony was talking about the “old days”, as well. Which was funny as I look back on it now, because at the time, Tony wasn't really an "old timer" himself. Actually, - he was, mid 30s? After about 4 or 5 glasses of what I was quite SURE was, ah, ORANGE JUICE (ok and some kind of flavoring made in Russia, can't remember the name), I found myself inexplicably un-able to barely stand up, much less walk ANY line, much less a straight one. It was after midnight, the party was winding down, and Tony, who had given me the evil eye earlier, along with Kent Saunders and someone else, took me arm over each shoulder, and half carried me (you know, with the feet dragging the floor) back to my room and dumped me onto the bed. When they were leaving, Tony said “Ok Kid, remember Frank Cricchio is on at 8:30, don’t oversleep!” The next morning I just remember hearing this horrible noise in my ear. It seemed like it had been going on for hours. I couldn't seem to be able to MOVE for a while. When I finally did, I realized I HAD been hearing this horrible noise for hours - at least 2 hours - it was the ALARM clock which had been set for 7 - and it was now 9! Somehow, I managed to drag myself up, throw water in my face and wet and comb my hair and get dressed and stumble down the hall to the meeting room. Sure enough, Frank Cricchio had already started. I saw Tony and his wife had saved me a seat. Tony took a look at me, shook his head with that stern look (but tried to hide the grin on his face), Tony with his wife, Bev. and said “Don't worry, Kid, I've been taking notes for you...” Of course, Frank, who is one of the legendary portrait artists in the world - is a folksy down to earth guy, and those first few minutes I missed, were mostly his "warm up the audience" stories, anyway. But, that was the kind of guy Tony was. He was one of the last still active “old timers” from my first convention. Your first convention, like mine, is something you will always remember. I remember after getting my Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman degrees from the PPA over 20 years ago, my wife gave me the Master's signet ring (which unfortunately is no longer available) from the PPA. It seems Tony's family had gotten him that ring as well around the same time. We were apparently the only two VPPA members, that I know of, who both had the same ring. It was a signet with the PPA original logo on the face and 2 stones, for the 2 degrees, embedded it it. Tony and I had a little fun ritual every time we first saw each other every year at convention after that - we would “ring bump” our rings together, (I like to think that whoever originated the “fist bump”, did so after seeing me and Tony at conventions!). Tony would usually see me first and stick his hand out and say “Ok, secret decoder ring time", which was a joke on some kids’ cereal tv commercial from the 1960’s with the "secret decoder ring" inside the cereal box. Anyway,.... that was Tony’s sense of humor for you. He will be sorely missed by me and by many from now on. He was one of a kind. Requiescat in pace - Rest in Peace, Old Friend. Rest in Peace....

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD MESSAGE

In the midst of enjoying a memorable summer, it is time to sit back, relax, and take stock of all that we have accomplished in 2014. As we sip on a cool glass of sweet tea, we recognize that in a few short months the year will be coming to a close. When we review our struggles and successes along with our failures, we must acknowledge the importance of the VPPA organization in motivating Jim Carpenter, M. Photog. Cr., CPP, FP us toward creating and capturing even more amazing memories. Membership in a supportive, forwardthinking organization is elemental in enhancing our craft as professional photographers. Capturing memories that encompass artistic and visual as well as storytelling elements is what we strive to achieve. Our artistic eyes and visual possibilities are limitless. Our opportunities are great, but they can be even better if we network and collaborate with other members on ideas and advancements. The year may be half over, but there is still time to step up to the plate and hit a home run to end your year on a successful note. This month alone, four districts within the VPPA are hosting their monthly meetings and showcasing some of photography’s best and brightest talents. One seminar will present an internationallyknown speaker, and our annual convention will present five days of hardcore classroom learning opportunities. The VPPA is hosting some of our profession’s most sought after speakers who will present their ideas and innovative advances in creativity for us to incorporate into our work. As members, we freely share our knowledge, equipment, and even personnel when needed. I constantly find myself learning valuable lessons and business pointers from long-time VPPA members as well as discovering creative ideas and tips of the trade from our newest members. After having been a member of the VPPA for many years, I still find myself continually impressed with how we CAN and DO help each other. Learning together, sharing our ideas and solutions, and teaching through social media outlets such as Facebook enables us all to become better masters of our craft. In November, I will retire as your VPPA President and then resume service as Chairman of the Board. The VPPA would like to personally thank our outgoing chairman, Kevin Hurley, for his years of service to our organization and wish him well in the future. In my new role, I look forward to working with each member, continuing to serve the board, and expanding our opportunities as professional photographers. To receive the most reward from your membership, please get involved with your district meetings, seek knowledge from other members, recruit members to our ranks, and share what you know. When you give, you always receive; and when opportunity meets experience, great things always happen.

It’s hard to believe that fall is right around the corner! With that, I would like to ask our members for a few favors. We will all be getting that invoice for dues from Don; please be prompt in paying! I have always felt the best time to pay your dues is when you first get them. If you wait until January, you may not have the extra cash you had in the fall. Secondly; Tracy, Jeff and David Kevin Hurley, M. Photog., FP Lee will be running the next three conventions. They are working hard to book quality speakers for you, but they can’t do it alone. Please ask your vendors for any support they can give us. Auction items, door prizes or, even better, ask them to purchase a trade show booth! Serving on the board for the last five years has been a real learning experience for me on how the VPPA works. If you haven’t already, consider serving on the district level as Governor. You will attend the board meetings and help run the Summer Seminar. GETTNG A HEAD START ON COMPETITION By Pat Hansen, M.Photog., MA, Cr., FP VPPA Salon Chairman

It is now five months into next year’s competition prep time. How are you doing with selecting and working on your images for the 2015 season? Yes, I know, some of us just got our national cases sent off with bated breath, especially after the somewhat disappointing showing at SEPPA this year. I really do stand in awe of those of you who did well at SEPPA because I think it was a tough sell this time. Those of you who are in the “missed the boat” category are not alone, and I urge you to keep the faith and try again. While the judges are all trained the same way, presumably use the same guidelines to help them recognize our spectacular photographic efforts, they are, after all, mere humans, each with his or her own experiences, background, abilities, prejudices, likes and dislikes. Sometimes they hit the nail on the head and sometimes they miss it entirely. Here are some hints of what you might try for next year: 1. Take advantage of the critiques held at the seminar in September and at various districts during the year. 2. Ask other photographers to help you narrow down your selections, to suggest presentation colors and sizes, suggest catchy titles, and to look at your work for flaws the judges might see like hot spots in the background or along the edges, out of focus faces or body parts, clone marks, weak printing, blacks that are not black, etc. 3. Try different crops to ascertain what is important enough to leave in and what should go. 4. When you are being critiqued by someone, do not make excuses or give explanations for what your critiquer points out. Try to listen and learn. Ask questions if you need to in order to understand something better. 5. Try to spread your work out into several categories, utilizing the ones that are under represented if you can. Now for some samples. 1. This architectural image by Gordon Kreplin titled “Upstairs, Downstairs,” has features that grab the eyes of the judges. The stair rail is attractive, the blue sky is inviting, the wall color is welcoming. In this category all verticals must be vertical, Fig. 1 not tilted in or out. His choice of colors (cool-warm, blue-yellow) are appealing and work in his favor. The black “mat” matches the stair rail and does not detract from Upstairs, Downstairs by Gordon Kreplin the colors in the print. Lighting must be balanced-- daylight is cooler to the eye than incandescent lights; one should not overpower the other. The title is a familiar phrase, is short, and is easily pronounced and understood. This print scored 82. If you can produce a good indoor or outdoor image, you are ahead of the game; there were only nine entries in this category in 2014. 2. In “Opulent Repose” by Robert Harris, we see an elegant bride posed gracefully in front of an upright piano which has been distorted slightly by the masterful artwork which painted not only the piano but the bride’s clothing as well. The use of black and white give this image a timeless look that is, at present, very popular in competition. Colors will not distract us and make us look at the piano rather than the bride’s face. There is a distinct leading line from the lower left of the image to the upper right, going from the bouquet and up her right arm to her face. The line follows out the upper right of the image which sometimes can be a problem, but here acts as a balance to the large dark mass of the piano. I counted only five entries in this category and all but one were in black and white. This image shows that you do not have to have a bride dancing on the hands of a statue or hanging from the chandelier to score well. Brush up on your painting skills and look at your wedding images both in color and black and white. Fig. 2 Opulent Repose by Robert Harris

GETTNG A HEAD START ON COMPETITION . . . continued from previous page 3. In “Fifty Shades Later” Liz Vance has chosen to show a black and white subject in color. This elegantly dressed man in his tux could have been photographed nearly any time in the last century, but he looks very “today”, mostly because of the casual pose and his hair style. The only colors in this image are the gold studs in his shirt, his skin tones, and his blue eyes. The lighting is emphasizing the mask of his face and drifts off as the eye moves from left to right in the image. These elements together helped this image score 86 in the Portrait of a Man category, in which there were thirteen entries. 4. Two other under-utilized categories were: Social Event Portrait with five entries, and Social Event Candid with only three. I know that there are many wedding and event photographers in the membership so why aren’t you showing us your stuff? The same goes for the album categories which, in the past, had so many entries that we divided them up. We all know that albums are the most expensive competition items to produce, and the low numbers probably relect that fact. But, you do need new display albums from time to time, so how about it? Ready to try? Look at the images here from the Social Event categories, “Stolen Moment” by Jessica Arnest, and “A Lighter Moment” by Earl Dashiel. In the portrait, Jessica has placed her bride and groom on the magic right third of the image space. They are posed well and are totally absorbed in each other Fig. 3 with pleasing expressions. The placement of the little bushes and the flower baskets along the wall, keep the eye moving and add interest to an otherwise plain brick wall. This print scored 80. In the candid, Earl has allowed the subjects to relax and assume Fifty Shades Later by Liz Vance their own choice of expressions. The man on the far right who is looking at his non-existant watch, stands out because his clothing is not the same as the others. He acts as a break to stop the eye and allow it to wander back to the team. Posing them in front of their work vehicle lends authenticity to the image without having the truck take over by being too large or bright. The posing and expressions add to the story-telling aspect of this clever candid. These are not the only under-utilized categories, but are the smallest we had in 2014. Don’t be afraid to experiment with at least one of your images and try something different from what you usually do. Good luck with 2015. I look forward to seeing lots of creative images from all of you.

The Business Corner By Doug Mattice

Tips for becoming successful in the Photography Business As a business coach serving photographers, I get the opportunity to talk with many photographers who are attempting to take their business to the next level. My clients are always looking at how they can run their business more efficiently, have better balance with work and family, and earn a nice living doing what they love. Here are 9 steps that you can take that will help you up-level your business and assist you in your journey for success: #1: Set Clear, Measurable Goals and Define What Success Looks Like Photographers are not the same when it comes to running a business. Some are doing it as their livelihood and main source of income, while others are pursuing it as a part-time venture to make a little extra money. Either way, the key to your overall success will depend on whether or not you have set clear, measurable goals that are WRITTEN DOWN. When you write goals down, it gives you something tangible to track and is an excellent way to ensure you are heading in the right direction. Look at your goals regularly and readjust as needed so that they match up with your definition of success. #2: Outsource What You SUCK AT! Photographers enjoy taking pictures and wish that’s all they had to do. The problem with owning a business is there are things that you have to do that you may not be very good at like graphic design, bookkeeping, marketing, working on your website, etc. As a photographer, you feel you are an expert in what you do and want people to hire you based on this feeling. You need to hire “other experts” who can help you get to where you want to go much faster than if you do it yourself. It will be money well spent, plus it allows you to remain focused on your strengths. #3: Separate Yourself from Other Photographers by Creating a Brand Are you known as the town photographer or someone who specializes in one area of photography like weddings, portraits or commercial work? How is your work different from others in your market? How do you want to be known in your area? Are you a photographer or a portraitist? Defining your brand takes time, but if done correctly, can elevate you in the marketplace. #4: Take Time to Photograph for Yourself and Build a Style that Separates You from Others. I learned early in my career to photograph for the client but also take a few images for myself. This stretches you and expands your creativity. Spend one day a month doing a “creative self-assignment” and watch your photography improve year after year. (Note: VPPA President Jim Carpenter is a master of the “creative self-assignment.” If you want to know more about this, reach out to him and he will explain it further.) #5: Have a Solid Marketing Plan The idea of “Build it, They Will Come” does NOT work. Building a website, designing a logo, and printing business cards is not an effective marketing plan. A marketing plan is what you do with those items to reach clients. If marketing is not your strong suit (see #2) then have someone help you. I work with photographers to create marketing pieces that attract the right clients as well as make suggestions for improving the effectiveness of your website. #6: Invest In Yourself A successful business is always moving forward. As a photographer, you need to be investing in your personal growth as well as business growth. Stay active in the PPA, attend workshops and seminars and continue to build your network. Having friends and colleagues that understand what you do is essential in today’s competitive market. #7: Remember Jack Palance in “City Slickers”? He said to “Keep The Main Thing, THE Main Thing” With new backgrounds, cameras, tripods, software, business tools, apps, and photography techniques in our industry, it is very easy to get caught up in the “shiny object” syndrome. Stay true to what got you to where you are today, and continue to build on that. I have seen too many photographers buy the “shiny object” in hopes that it would be the magic pill for success. Instead of creating revenue for the studio, it created huge debt that brought hardship to the business. #8: Establish Relationships with Others In Your Area This goes beyond point #2. Get known in your town. Give back to the community. Be honest and trustworthy and others will follow you. #9: Take Action – Revise Later (Avoid Analysis Paralysis) Photographers tend to over analyze everything! We put our reputation out there every time we photograph something for a client. Our work is very close to our heart and we want everyone to like what we do. The thought that if it’s perfect everyone will love it is wrong. Art is subjective. Knowing that you’ve done your best and strove for excellence is all anyone, including yourself, can ask. Embrace your talent and share it with the world! Doug Mattice is the owner of Onward to Excellence Coaching, specializing in business and leadership development and peak performance. As a coach, he helps photographers increase their income and productivity by partnering with them so they learn HOW to grow their business without going broke or crazy in the process. Doug begins by looking at the overall business model to determine the most lucrative offerings and strategies available that will take the business to the next level. Then, he works directly with the studio owner to clarify what they need to do each day, week and month to create a highly profitable business and amazing lifestyle. He has a variety of coaching programs that combines business, marketing and money strategies that teach photographers the essential foundations they need to create a six-figure business and beyond. Spring/Summer Edition

From the Desk of: Robert Holman, M. Photog. Cr., FP, CPP Virginia SEPPA Representative

SEPPA REPORT 2015 Did you know that SEPPA is a benefit that is FREE to every member of the VPPA? Whether you’re an OLD member or NEW member. It doesn’t matter. SEPPA has also been ‘re-born’. After struggling through several years of financial difficulties, SEPPA is now stronger than ever due to the persistent efforts of a dedicated Executive Board. SEPPA 2015 will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the Sheraton Charlotte Hotel. Whether that ends up being a permanent location or not, is still to be determined. Either way, Charlotte is certainly much closer to Virginia than Athens, Georgia. The dates for the 2015 Convention will be May 1st - 5th; so make plans now to attend. Besides having a fantastic line-up of speakers, an awesome Trade show and a social gathering of hundreds of prestigious photographers, there is print competition. Print competition is the major high light of the Convention for most photographers. It is a good proving ground and a stepping stone to PPA judging. Take your best print entries from Virginia and send them on to SEPPA and see how you do. If they get a ‘seal of approve’, then send them on to PPA. They will become an automatic ‘merit’ print; and waaalaaa – you are on your way to a Master’s degree. Print rules and shipping information may be found on-line at SEPPA’s NEW web site: www.seppaonline.com Digital entries will be accepted, as well as traditional prints; so start getting your entries lined up now. I’m making my plans now to attend SEPPA 2015 in Charlotte. This SEPPA Convention will be a full-blown SEPPA convention and I can’t wait to see all the exciting new things in our industry and talk to all my friends – even an ‘ole fossil like me can still learn a few new tricks. ☺ Charlotte, North Carolina, is easy to get to by plane, train, car or motorcycle; so don’t make any excuses. Just be there! If you have any questions about the competition, please do not hesitate to contact me at my e-mail: rholman@visi.net or by telephone at my studio: (757) 491-9111.

Get One By Anthony Rumley, M.Photog.,Cr., CPP, FP Membership is the cornerstone of any successful organization, especially in an all volunteer one such as the Virginia PPA. It takes ordinary people like you and I, not only to step up to the plate and give of our time and talent, but also to promote the benefits of our organization to prospective members. How many times have you photographed a wedding and crossed paths with a photographer you have never seen? Perhaps you were out at your favorite park and there they are. The dreaded “other” photographer working in “your” favorite spot? Next time look at those as opportunities to discuss the value of belonging to a professional organization. When you do this, you could be changing that person’s life and in a way, your own as well. With membership dollars we are able to fund every educational opportunity you and I enjoy every month of the year. Those dollars go into scholarship and memorial funds, pay speaker travel and lecture fees, and help pay the expenses of running our association. The Get One campaign is my personal challenge to every VPPA member to recruit at least one new member in any membership category this year. If you do this, your name goes into a drawing for a FREE one year membership at your current category. Step it up and recruit THREE Active members and you automatically receive a FREE one year membership, again at your current category. Many of you have already accepted the challenge. So far this year we have 27 new members! This is fantastic, but we ALL need to do more! We should easily be able to reach 50 by the end of the year. So, please accept my personal Thank You to those who took this challenge to heart. To those who are just now accepting the challenge, Thank You as well. This is our organization and we need everyone to be onboard to continue the many benefits and relationships we enjoy. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need any help recruiting someone. Email: anthony@anthonyrumley.com

IN THE NEWS continued from page 2 will have his or her membership dues waived for the following year. If they bring 3 members, dues would automatically be paid for the following year. Anthony made a Motion and it was carried to launch the program. Anthony was asked to announce it at the Annual Meeting. • Kevin commented about all of the changes made to evolve the association in order to improve the organization and attract and retain members. • Richard St. Peter gave a tribute to Polly Frye who was President of the VPPA 50 years ago. • A Motion was made and carried that the meeting be Adjourned until Saturday, February 22, 2014, at the VPPA Convention Brunch.

VPPA Annual Breakfast/Brunch Meeting held on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at the Sheraton Park South Hotel, in Richmond, Virginia • The Meeting was Called to Order and Kevin Hurley offered Greetings to everyone. • An Introduction of Head Table was made by Kevin Hurley. Recognition of Anniversaries - as presented by Renny Cave Membership anniversaries were recognized. Richard St. Peter acknowledged the 50th anniversary of Polly Frye serving as President of VPPA. Financial Report – as presented by Don Aittama • Reports were placed on each of the tables. Don announced that the Association received $450 from the endowment fund that will go into the scholarship fund. He stated that annual dues only cover approximately 55% of the operating expenses of the Association. • A member raised a question regarding changing to an online magazine and membership directory and getting rid of the printed versions. • Questions also arose on how the money is allotted to the districts for programs. Concerns were raised about attempts to draw new members. Since education is the foundation of the VPPA, the low allotments that the districts receive don’t seem to go far. • Don assured the members that all of these concerns have been discussed and will be addressed at the next Financial Committee meeting. Get 1 Program – as presented by Anthony Rumley • Anthony announced the new Get 1 program and explained how it will work. It was well accepted and several suggestions were made to improve the program. This included a service credit for the top recruiter and for the Association to offer a payment plan instead of requiring the entire payment of the annual fee at once. Website & Social Media Report – as presented by David Lee Michaels • David Lee announced and debuted the new website by Photobiz. He gave a demonstration showing new features and improvements. He said it would go live after the convention. Print Salon Report – as presented by Pat Hansen • Pat reported that 59 cases were entered into competition with a total of 301 entries. The new online only registration had a few glitches but for the most part worked well. Several more awards have been added. Richmond Camera will be giving 3 awards and Lexjet will be giving one to a high scoring print decided by the judges. Another is the new scholarship award for prints scoring under an 80. Patti Good will award the scholarship for the Robert Good scholarship program. Pat also described the People’s Choice award. Registration Report – as presented by Tracy McGee • Tracy spoke about the raffle for membership dues that will be announced at the end of the Convention. 152 people have registered: 119 online, 22 by mail and 11 at the door. Convention Report – as presented by Stephanie Adams • Stephanie thanked those who came and all those who assisted her in planning and putting on the Convention. Drawings were as follows: • Gary “King” Carter scholarship was awarded to Steven Radcliffe, alternate is Jen Chaconas • East Coast Scholarship went to Anne Companion. General Business – as presented by Kevin Hurley • Anthony Rumley took a moment to speak about the new Enthusiast category. • Jamie Hayes made a Motion that the printed directory and magazine go to an online version only. Second by Cathy Benton. Jamie rescinded the motion after Jim Carpenter suggested referring it to the finance committee. Jamie, Kitty, Jim & Anthony were appointed to look into the online version. Nominating Committee – as presented by Sharon Younce • The Nominating Committee presented the following slate of nominees: Jim Carpenter, Chairman of the Board, PPA Counselor Stephanie Adams, President Tracy McGee, 1st Vice President Jeff Kaiser, 2nd Vice President The new In-Coming Recording Secretary nominated - David Lee Michaels Election of Officers - by Kevin Hurley • A Motion was made and carried to accept the slate of officers as presented. VPPA Board of Directors’ Minutes from Board Meeting held At the Sheraton Park South Hotel on Tuesday morning, February 25, 2014, at Convention • The Meeting was Called to order by Kevin Hurley and an Invocation was given by Jim Carpenter. • Proxy votes conferred in writing – None were presented. Applications of New Members – as presented by Don Aittama • 20 new member applications were presented. There were several loose ends on some of the applications. Incomplete addresses, missing images and tax ID numbers need to be addressed. Tracy McGee asked why new members for active status need to submit images. To meet the Association’s minimum standards was given as the reason. • A Motion was made and carried to approve the applications as presented conditionally pending completion of all missing items as discussed. Names of Delinquent Members – as presented by Don Aittama • Don distributed a list of names on Friday at the Board meeting with the 3 changes discussed then. “Another Loss” The portrait “Another Loss” was taken at the historical site of “Michie Tavern” located in Charlottesville, Virginia just one-half mile from Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. I had met my subject, Alexander, at many weddings where he bar tended receptions. I soon realized that I had also seen him many times at Michie Tavern where he hosted guests and was one of their best waiters. Dressed in period clothing, he had an interesting face and a gentlemen’s personality. I asked Alexander if he would consider posing for me as a subject study. He agreed, and while working with the beautiful window light, one reflector, and the antique furniture of the Tavern, “Another Loss” was created.

IN THE NEWS continued from page 17 • Vendors were extremely happy with the trade show turn out. Vendors will be offered a 20% discount if the contract for next year's convention is signed and paid for within 60 days of this convention. David Lee Michaels suggested appointing a tradeshow chairman for a 3 year term. A semi-permanent convention team should be formed to help out the upcoming convention chairman. Jim Carpenter will be appointing a committee to explore this suggestion. • It was also reported that 120 people signed up for the banquet – which was more than in previous years. • Security concerning the hospitality room was brought up and Margie’s uneasiness with open access to the room. Too many keys were distributed with no accountability. The Hospitality Chairman was not informed of programs or groups who were allowed to gather in that space. There should be a change in this policy before the next Convention. • There was concern expressed that the buddy system was not brought up to the board prior it being initiated. Kevin took responsibility for approving it. This program should be run by the membership committee and not just a group of members who have no accountability to the Board. • Many ideas were brought up concerning the VPPA Facebook pages. Each district’s Facebook page needs to be monitored at the state level along with board oversight. A consistency of brand is wanted versus control over the pages. Jim Carpenter will appoint a team to have policies written for social media. • Pat Hansen reported that she got very positive feedback on the new scoring and reporting system. However, the computer system will need upgrades. She will bring some cost information to the next board meeting. Pat said Wolfgang is ready to take over as Print Salon Chairman and she’ll be his assistant. Next VPPA Board meeting: The date for next board meeting will be April 28. The location is still to be determined. The time was set for 10:00 a.m., with a finance committee meeting at 9:00 a.m. Adjournment A Motion was made and carried that the meeting be adjourned.

VPPA Board of Directors’ Meeting Minutes From meeting held on April 28th, 2014, At the Sheraton Park South Hotel In Richmond, Virginia • The Meeting was Called to Order by Kevin Hurley and an Invocation was given by Jim Carpenter. • Recognition of proxy votes (in writing) – as presented by Kevin Hurley Wolfgang Jasper held a proxy for Pat Hansen • Minutes from Board Meetings of 2/21 & 2/25/14 – as presented by Jeff Kaiser • A Motion was made and carried to accept the minutes as presented. Executive Treasurer’s Report – as presented by Don Aittama • Don stated that Convention charges came in after the credit card was set up to pay (which is the middle of the month), so the amount will be taken out in April’s pay period. Total Convention expenses were up over last year’s Convention by approximately $3000 and income was down by approximately $8000. • The Association currently has $28,000 in the bank, $15,000 needs to go to the credit card, leaving a balance of only $13,000 in the bank. Don reviewed upcoming obligations and stated that the Association may be running out of money by October if adjustments aren’t made. A report of the Convention income/expenses was distributed, along with a proposed budget for next year's Convention. Income from meal charges was down $600 due to a glitch in the online registration. Many meal charges were missed and were not paid. This error must be corrected for next year. • Income from Convention was about $3000 less than last year. One of the biggest increases in expenses was the hotel room costs for VPPA officers. When the Convention was in Roanoke, there was no cost for the officers’ rooms. Travel expenses also increased. Pipe and drape expenses were $1000 higher than previous years although less pipe & drape was used. The 2013 Convention in Roanoke had a $1,800 loss and the 2014 Convention sustained nearly a $12,000 overall deficit. • Stephanie questioned why the PPA association costs were $836 this year versus $300 from prior year. Applications for Membership – as presented by Don Aittama • The Tidewater District submitted one complete application. David Lee Michaels also has a completed application at his studio for the Blue Ridge District. Don said 3 additional incomplete applications were left over from the Convention. A Motion was made and carried to accept conditionally the applications as presented pending receipt of all information. Executive Secretary’s Report – as presented by Renny Cave • Several previously approved changes to the policy manual were distributed. • Renny suggested that the governors reach out through their phone tree to ask members whose membership recently lapsed to return. She suggested that former members be allowed to rejoin the Association at a reduced rate. She also urged governors to add new members to their email list. • She also reminded them that there should be no district meetings in September instead Governors should urge the members to attend the seminar. • Renny welcomed the Lt. Governors who were attending the board meeting prior to becoming Governor. Only the Capital District Lt. Governor has not yet attended a meeting. • Richard St. Peter mentioned that Joe Schultz from Tidewater and a VPPA past president, passed away last week. District Governor’s Reports • There were no reports from Capital and Blue Ridge districts. The Northern District report was incomplete. The complete report will be sent via email. A Motion was made and carried to accept the reports presented. Convention 2014 Report – as presented by Stephanie Adams • Stephanie has consulted with Tracy and offered suggestions for the upcoming 2015 Convention. There were a total of 164 people registered: 17 onsite, 119 online, 22 by mail and 6 nonmembers. Don had already given the financial report. Convention 2015 Report – as presented by Tracy McGee • Lisa Carter has agreed to be the tradeshow chairman with Jim Sanders assisting. John Waters has agreed to perform AV duties again for the 2015 convention. She is still looking for a models & props chairman. • Richard Sturdevant would be the highest costing speaker for Precon but may give an additional program during the convention and judge. Charges for him would be much higher for Precon than the standard $59/$79. • Jeff Dachowski would do a full day Precon program on lighting and posing in addition to a program during the convention. He would also judge. His charge is $1500. • Kevin spoke about budgeting for the convention costs and how to calculate them. Don suggested that a VPPA member do the Saturday program during the print competition to help reduce costs since many members are observing print competition and it's not usually as well attended. • Kitty suggested checking into Richard Sturdevant's past classes to see how many people came to his class. Tracy stated that he always sells out wherever he teaches. Renny stated that the Precon classes should not the main reason for the Convention and that the best speakers should not be reserved for Precon. • Tracy presented the list of her top choices in speakers for approval. • Stephanie mentioned that we need to monitor whether the sponsors pay the Association or make payment directly to the speakers themselves. • A Motion was made and carried to accept the list as presented as far as the budget would cover. Convention 2016 Report – as presented by Jeff Kaiser • Jeff presented two possible hotels. The DoubleTree in Richmond, formerly the Holiday Inn Koger Center, had room rates that were well above what the members would be willing to pay. The Newport News Marriott at City Center is his preferred location and was awaiting the proposal. There were several questions about what was covered in the potential contract. Jeff promised to send electronic copies to the Board. Seminar Report – as presented by Michael Corbin and Governors • The Governors have scheduled a meeting immediately following the board meeting. It was stated that Charles Lawson had the speaker list but was not present. The other governors were advised to proceed without him. Jeannette Burkle suggested that the Lt. Governors also be a part of the planning process so that they will have an idea of what they’re doing when it’s their turn to plan a seminar. • Anthony stressed the need for a convention and seminar coordinator. David Lee Michaels also suggested having a tradeshow chairman who would give a commitment for several years. • Renny Cave suggested that Jim Carpenter appoint a committee to write up a job description for a Convention/Seminar coordinator. • Richard St. Peter passed out a proposed registration form for the summer seminar. David Lee suggested June 1 as the deadline to have the registration form online. Richard made a Motion and it was carried to approve the form with the provision of capping the maximum cost for the extra day/extra pay at $79 for early registration and $99 for late registration. SEPPA Report – as presented by Robert Holman continued on next page

IN THE NEWS continued from page 16 • Robert stated that he attended the SEPPA Board of Governors’ meeting last month. He stated that SEPPA is in very good shape financially. Mary Fisk Taylor was selected as the Second Vice President. They will also be moving from Atlanta, Georgia, to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2015. • Robert reminded everyone that VPPA gets 2 free full page ads in each magazine. The Association is not taking advantage of this. Also 4 email blasts sent by SEPPA are available each year. Victoria Kelly is our contact at SEPPA. • The SEPPA Convention attendance did not meet expectations. The convention registration fee was not accepted very well by the members. The 2015 Convention dates are 5/1-5/5 in Charlotte, North Carolina. • Print Salon - They received 262 cases (1022 images) for judging and only 16% of the entries were prints, the rest being digital entries. That was a record number of entries submitted for judging. Randy McNeilly is trying to get the affiliated judging back into member states as it was in the past. The judging will move to different states every other year. SEPPA will handle all of the costs associated with the judging. Each state must submit a proposal to be considered. Each state would keep the print fees for the images submitted to the state for judging, but SEPPA would keep print case fees from outside states. The first year this would be an option would be 2016. There are many advantages to hosting a SEPPA affiliate convention. • Jim Carpenter mentioned that many of the other SEPPA affiliated states are struggling with their membership. Jim also mentioned how well the VPPA members did in competition. Jeff Kaiser urged applying for the affiliated judging to be held in Virginia. Ethics Committee – as presented by Jim Carpenter • No report. No Issues Finance/Audit Committee – as presented by Don Aittama • The most immediate issue facing the Association is the shortfall of about $7,000 at the end of the year. It is imperative for the Association to cut some costs. He mentioned some of the measures he thinks need to be taken: • Officers’ Salaries: Officers’ salaries make up approximately 25% of the budget. Don suggested cutting them 25%. The Exec. Treasurer and Exec. Secretary are the only 2 paid positions. Don made a motion to that affect. Discussion followed. The majority opinion was that it was a bad idea. Motion failed. • ProShare: Don made a Motion to have ProShare money no longer be put into the scholarship funds, as it has in the past, and that it should be put into the general fund for the near future. Motion carried. • Magazine & Directory: Don made a Motion that one of the two issues of the VPPA magazine be presented only in digital format. Discussion followed, including moving it to Issuu where each person could pay for their own printed version, if they wanted one. The next issue for discussion was to have the current printer do the layout, typeset and produce a pdf to be submitted to Issuu. Don tabled his motioned until this information could be obtained. • Don made a Motion and it carried to allow the current printer to typeset and produce a digital pdf for the next issue. • Renny spoke for the directory and asked Kitty to research having the printer doing the typeset and layout for directory. Michael Corbin volunteered to put together the directory with the photos. This was put on hold until more information could be gathered. • District Rebates: Districts get a 5% rebate, of which $300 goes to PPA for affiliation. Don made a Motion and it was carried to reduce the rebate from 5% of member dues to a flat $300 to cover affiliate dues. That would save the state $700-800 this year. The districts would use the money they currently have in their treasury for speakers. Districts would also be allowed to raise money to increase their available funds. • Summer Seminar: Don made a Motion and it was carried that the Summer Seminar income and expenses be the responsibility of the state for ease of controlling and auditing the finances. • Seminar Cap: Don made a Motion and it was carried that the net cost of summer seminar be maxed at $2500. • Travel Reimbursement: Don made a Motion and it was carried to eliminate all board travel reimbursement to board meetings. • Hotel Rooms: Don made a Motion and it was carried to pay only for hotel rooms for VPPA members working as full time convention support. • Elimination of Alternates: Don made a Motion and it was carried to eliminate alternate winners of all the scholarships underwritten by VPPA funds. • Non-Resident Membership: Renny made a Motion and it was carried that non-resident VPPA members’ dues be raised to $200 per year. • Print Salon Report – as presented by Wolfgang Jasper Wolfgang presented a judge scoring kit proposal package for the convention at a cost of $200 for the entire convention. It is the same system used last year, but the equipment would be supplied by Jeff Burton. If this system is not utilized, the Association will need to replace at least the current scoring boxes. A Motion was made and carried to obtain the kit. He also mentioned that a new lighting system will be needed soon. Pat is encouraging checking into digital presentation in addition to the current system. • Magazine Report – as presented by Kitty Pugh Pete Wright’s award winning print will be the image on the cover of the next magazine. She will talk to the printer about costs involved with layout. See prior discussion about going to a digital version. There was discussion about getting tradeshow vendors to place ads in the digital magazine. Current vendors are offered a half price ad in the physical magazine, but few take advantage of it. David Lee said if there is a digital version, there can be hotlinks that will take the reader directly to the vendors’ websites. Website – as presented by David Lee Michaels • David Lee stated that the website is working well. A separate domain name was purchased to maintain the old website that will be up until Don no longer needs it for the database. A searchable member name database is difficult to put together and may not be available until early next year. An additional piece of software was needed to make it easier to produce video for the site. David Lee plans to have the VPPA library online for checking out materials. • The new email address for the Association is vppa@gmail.com. Vppa@davidleemichaels.com is the one he prefers to be used for all Board contact. • All the districts need to use a format other than Constant Contact for producing their newsletters. David Lee laid out the main concerns of the Social Media Committee Objectives: 1. Maintain the brand and consistency of the VPPA. 2. Ensure proper use of VPPA logo. 3. Check the integrity of information being distributed. 4. Monitor posts for appropriate content. 5. Verify eligibility of page members. • David Lee made a Motion and it was carried to adopt the following recommendations to achieve the objectives above. 1. The VPPA Webmaster will be the liaison between anyone setting up a web page where the purpose of that page is to promote, advertise or distribute any information regarding any activities of the Virginia PPA. 2. The Webmaster will determine if Board approval is needed prior to the web page being published publicly. 3. The Webmaster will be set up as an additional administrator on any web page. 4. The Webmaster will, at his/her discretion, remove pages or posts that are deemed inappropriate, incorrect or are appear to be adverse to any policies of the Virginia PPA. The Webmaster will report any enforcement activity he/she has taken to the President and they will determine if the Board or Ethics committee should be contacted. • Kitty Pugh made a Motion and it was carried to allow David Lee to purchase the video software as per David Lee’s request. Membership – as presented by David Lee Michaels • David Lee advised that all new members were assigned buddies and all seems to be going well. Library Report – as presented by Timorah Beales • Written support submitted. Old Business • Jim Carpenter questioned the validity of a Northern VPPA group that implies they are affiliated with PPA but is not a part of our Association. They are a dues paying group with monthly meetings. • Renny mentioned that at the Convention some applicants were accepted as provisional members who already have business names, websites, etc and they should be in the active category. New Business • Jim Carpenter brought up the suggestion of an amnesty offer to get former members back as full time members. He suggested that the dues would be reduced by a certain amount if they rejoin by a certain date. This would be a one-time offer and would cover only the rest of this fiscal year. A Motion was made and carried to proceed with the offer. PPA Report – as presented by David Lee Michaels • David Lee Michaels stated that David Trust, PPA CEO, is the biggest advocate for our industry. PPA is working on a large television ad campaign to promote professional photographers. Next Board Meeting: • The next VPPA Board meeting is scheduled to be held on Monday, August 11th, at 10:00 a.m. The Location is still to be determined. - A Motion was made and carried that the meeting be adjourned.

COVER NOTE “The Golden Age” by Pete Wright, M. Photog., Cr., FP When I was a kid growing up in North Carolina, I spent a ton of time in the darkroom. My father, who was a photographer, had shared his hobby with me and also his passion for black and white photography. As I grew up, I fell in love with the images of Ansel Adams, not only did I love the landscapes, but the beautiful black and white printing as well. So, it was only natural as I became a professional and started taking portraits, that I would be drawn to classic black and white portraits. I started to study the work of greats like George Hurrell (my personal favorite), Clarence Sinclair Bull, Ernest A. Bachrach and many others. Over the years, I tried to emulate their posing and lighting and even used their images to help with wardrobe, props and location ideas. After years of photographing dozens and dozens of film noir shoots, I decided it was time to compile an album of a few of my favorites to share with potential clients. It wasn’t my original intent to create this album for competition, but as I was putting it together and choosing the images to include, I decided that I would stick it in and see how it would do. It has been nice to see work that has become my passion rewarded. I am fortunate that my chicken soup for the soul of photography is not only something that my clients love, but that judges seem to appreciate as well.
