Executive Treasurer’s Report • Don stated that he has closed the Bank America account and put that money into the SunTrust account. Both banks required a minimum balance. That action freed up $4000 for the general fund. There is a debt of $3600 due to the scholarship fund from the purchase of the new projector. • As of this meeting, Don estimated $5k positive at the end of this year compared to the budget that the Finance Committee presented. Don recommended that if we have a surplus, that we pay back the scholarship fund from purchasing the projector. continued on page 3

Well, its convention time again. Jim Carpenter and his staff have worked hard for the last 18 months to bring you an awesome line up of diverse speakers. As you know the convention is once again in Roanoke before moving back to Richmond for 2014 and 2015. As I thought about what I wanted to say in my message, Kevin Hurley, M. Photog., FP I kept coming back to the same theme. What has VPPA meant to me and my business? There is an old saying, “You get out of it, what you put into it.” You can’t sit on the sideline and expect things to just happen. You need to get involved! It never fails to amaze me. When I attend a district meeting, I always come away with a piece of knowledge that will help my business. This is my Thirteenth year in the VPPA; I have served in some way for nine of those years. I know you’re saying “good for you Kevin”. Well it is good for me, and my business. I have met lifelong friends! Not only in the state of Virginia, but across the Country. In 2005 I met Bob Boyd a wonderful photographer, who taught some lighting and posing that I still use today. In 2011 I met Cris Duncan, while I was looking for speakers for my convention. Cris and I talk on a regular basis, about photography, business and family. This September we spent 4 days in Yosemite National Park with a dozen other photographers, photographing and learning. My point to all this is, we need to get involved. The board works very hard to provide all these opportunities for you. Help us by promoting the VPPA, attending your district meetings, seminars and conventions. Remember you get out of it, what you put into it. See you at the Safari

Print Critique Sunday, February 24th, 2013 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Speaker: Pat Hansen, M. Photog. Cr., MEI, FP and Judges. Pat Hansen and the Judges will help answer some of the questions as to ‘Why’ one print got a ‘Blue’ ribbon and another didn’t. It’s all about the 12 elements of importance that make up a good photograph/portrait: Impact Creativity Style Print Presentation Color Balance Center of Interest

• The McDearmid scholarship fund has a deficit of $374 and the Searle fund only has $130 in it. Polly said the McDearmid and O’Neal scholarships both come out of the Memorial fund so is not in deficit. Don asked what should be done to make sure the scholarship accounts are not depleted. Polly said that in the past a scholarship has been dropped if funds are not available. • Kevin Hurley has talked with H&H to try to put together a calendar as a fund raising item for the convention. He is still working on that. • The Board had already voted to reduce the Searle scholarship to $500. Don asked whether any other scholarships should be reduced. Renny said it would be a shame to drop any of the remaining scholarships but suggested that the McDearmid and O’Neal could be reduced, if necessary, to $750 each. Anything below that amount would not pay tuition at most schools. • Anthony Rumley recommended the finance committee come up with fund raising ideas. Renny read a statement from PPA that offered things to the affiliates to use in a raffle or auction. • Stephanie made a Motion for Renny to contact PPA to get more information and to explore the PPA offer. Motion carried. • Another idea was raised to offer one or more pre-Convention classes on the Friday of that week. Rather than renting hotel rooms, David Lee Michaels and Kevin Hurley each volunteered their studios for a class to raise money for the scholarship fund. Jim Carpenter was asked to explore this option. Jim asked Pat Hansen whether one of the additional judges could also do a pre-con class. She agreed to follow up on this. New Member Applications • A Motion was made and carried to accept six Active & 2 Provisional applications as presented. Renny still had two applications that were not completed and even though these people had been contacted, their final information had not been received. It was suggested that both be accepted as Provisional members and not have full Active status until the information is given. A Motion for same was made and carried. Executive Secretary’s Report – as presented by Renny Cave • Renny reminded the board that when an application is turned in, the Governor needs to let the applicant know when the next board meeting is and when the vote on the application will occur. • Don Aittama offered to follow up with each applicant stating he received their application and it will be voted on at the next board meeting and when that is. • Renny also reminded the governors to keep these applicants informed of monthly meetings while their applications are pending so they can attend. Changes to Membership Application – Renny presented new wording reflecting the pro-rating of membership dues. There was discussion on how to pro-rate membership dues when a member joins at Convention. Various suggestions were presented and discussed. Polly made a Motion to go back to the old way that allows anyone who pays after the Convention to have their dues cover the rest of that year plus the following year. However, a recommendation was made that the Finance Committee review this policy to see if it will affect the financial health of the organization or if we need to implement prorated payments. Motion Carried • Bobby Carlsen made a Motion for the President to have the finance committee review this and come back to the board with their recommendation. Motion carried. • Kevin suggested we use calendar dates such as Mar 1 and Aug 1 as the cut off dates instead of indeterminate descriptions such as “after the Seminar”. Motion carried • Renny reminded the Governors they need to have their District elections if they have not already done so. • Renny recognized Elizabeth Bailey, a Lt Gov and incoming Northern District Governor in attendance. - Renny reminded the Governors to add new members as they are voted in to their district lists and to make an effort to include them so they feel welcomed to the organization. - She also reminded the Governors that PPA Affiliation renewal will be coming up and for all out-going Governors to help new incoming governors with that. District Governors’ Reports – submitted in writing • All Districts presented reports. Convention 2013 – as presented by Jim Carpenter • Jim asked to include Lora Yeater from West Virginia to his list of speakers. She will present a program on high school seniors. H&H Color Lab will pick up her $1000 speaking fee and if we have 100 people in her program, $500 for 50 people and expenses. Jim advised that her son has cancer, so he has contacted another photographer to fill in just in case she is not able to attend. • Jeff Lubin will speak on Children. Burrell Colour Lab will pick up $1500. The cost to the Association will only be $500. • Jim had to drop Rich Newell to stay on budget. • Jim made a Motion to accept these two additional speakers. Motion carried. • Jim estimates that he is spending approximately $9000 for speakers. Sharon asked whether the $9000 included airfare and lodging. Renny said that she understood the $10k budgeted should encompass everything for the speakers including airfare and lodging. Jim stated that the $9000 included sponsorship which he has obtained. • Trade Show – Jim has contacted over 60 vendors and hopes to get at least 30 vendors at the trade show. • “The Wedding Planner” magazine would be willing to run an ad for the VPPA. This ad needs to be designed to impact as many studios as possible. They are also donating an ad that we can auction off to our members. • Jim hopes to get a TV donated by Crutchfield for an auction item or the grand door prize. • Wells Fargo will also be a vendor at the trade show. • Robert Holman is the Tradeshow Chairman, Charles Lawson, Portia Schneider and Jim are continued on page 5

Self-Confidence and a Positive Mindset The Keys to Improving Your Sales, Your Photography and Your Bottom Line! When I work with a photographer to help them grow their business, one of the most common “weaknesses” I encounter in the first month of coaching is an overwhelming lack of self-confidence. This lack of confidence eventually eats away at their positive mindset, and it keeps them from achieving their dreams and purpose. Without a high level of confidence, you tend to put off the many actions that you MUST take in order to succeed in business. Studies have shown that many creative, artistic people have this personality trait, which is why so many of us feel insecure and have a huge fear of rejection. If you have a self-confidence problem, or a fear of rejection, it is hurting you in many ways: • It hurts your photography because it is difficult to be creative when you are stressed and tense. • It hurts your sales because you may be afraid to ask for the sale or worse, you may sabotage the sale by thinking the client is spending too much so you begin to discount your work. • It hurts your family because you are never there for them or even if you are, you are spending your time thinking about the business. • It hurts your overall success as a business owner because potential clients will see that you are insecure or that you lack confidence, hence they will not hire you.

Here are six ways you can improve your confidence that will lead to a more successful bottom line: 1.

Be careful who you spend your time with. Hanging out with the wrong people can ruin your confidence and positive outlook on life. These people are the “naysayers” and are always complaining about the economy, the government and why you can’t succeed in your business. They do not understand that you have a passion and a purpose to create beautiful images for your clients. If you listen too long to these people, you will eventually succumb to having a lack of confidence because you will become like them.

Be very careful of how you talk and think about yourself. This inner “self talk” has a tremendous amount of power in how we pursue things that we need to get done. If you constantly tell yourself, “I can’t” or “I will never be able to charge that much for my photography,” then you are just setting yourself up for internal failure. Keep a positive conversation going on in your head at all times. Push through the tough times and keep moving forward.

Start using these empowerment principles to keep a positive mindset. Here are a few of my favorites: a. Life offers neither problems nor challenges, only opportunities. This teaches you to make the best out of everything! b. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. This helps get you over the fear of rejection. Remember, “ask” for the exhibit, “ask” for the sale, “ask” for the design consultation. c. They are going to love these portraits! Say this over and over again in your head as you wait for your client to arrive for their viewing and sales appointment. This excitement will carry over into your sales conversation and will lead to better sales averages. You get the idea. Teach yourself to speak ONLY in positive terms and this will increase your self-confidence.

Act as if… Act has if you are already self-confident. Feelings follow actions, which means if you act self-confident then you will become selfconfident!

Begin working every day on YOURSELF and YOUR CONFIDENCE and ATTITUDE. Take control of your thoughts; read positive books and magazine articles and take time to study sales and telephone techniques. Over time you will see a positive change and your business will begin to grow faster than you ever thought was possible. The world today is such a negative place. It is up to you to take control of your attitude and mindset. As they say in the Marine Corps, “No one can do the pushups for you!”

Set some goals or intentions and read them to yourself every day. Knowing where you are going puts you ahead of so many other people who are spending their time aimlessly drifting from one day to the next. Having a set direction and a positive mindset will give you the self-confidence to fully succeed in presenting your gift of photography to the world!

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD MESSAGE Before we can blink our eyes the 2013 VPPA Convention will be here. Jim Carpenter has a wonderful lineup of speakers for our convention this year. Jim has been working really hard for several years to make this Convention a great Safari ride for all of us. Some of his speakers are: Bill Allard, Vanessa and Rob Adams, Michael and Tina Timmons, Tim and Beverly Walden, Randy McNeily, Joe and Mary Jean Campanellie, and Lora Yeater. Also our own John Waters and Jeff Lubin will be presenting programs. Please Sharon Younce, FP make your plans now to attend this year’s Convention in Roanoke Feb. 22-26 at the Holiday Inn Valley View. I am a visual person and writing an article for the magazine is difficult for me. I try so hard to find something that will be helpful in our profession to write about. I would much rather be out taking pictures than writing. The following are some quotes I found while researching material to write about. I hope you will find them helpful. Steve Shore writes; “As I wade a stream, I think wordlessly of where to cast the fly. Sometimes a difference of inches is the difference between catching a fish and not. When the fly I’ve cast is on the water, my attention is riveted to it. I watch the fly calmly and attentively so that when the fish strikes, I strike. Then, the line tightens, the playing of the fish begins, and time stands still. Fishing, like photography, is an art that calls forth intelligence, concentration, and delicacy.” “To photograph is to hold one’s breath when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality,” he wrote, neatly defining the moment of suspended reality that occurs when the shutter opens and closes in an instant. “It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.” Like an artist uses his brush or a musician uses their instrument, we use our cameras, and whether some agree or not . . . we are all artists. Photography is a form of art, a continuously growing one at that. We all have access to cameras these days - look at just about every phone and you’ll find a camera on it. Does that mean the person knows how to use that particular camera? Does it that make them an award winning photographer? Does that mean they are a “photographer?” As professionals, we are faced daily with the digital camera age. Everyone thinks they are a photographer. We can step out of our comfort zone to help these individuals learn more and become a professional or we can keep complaining about them. Invite them to our Convention, Seminars, or meetings. Convention 2014 – as presented by Stephanie Adams • Stephanie made a Motion to sign a two year contract with the Sheraton Park South in Richmond and to make the requisite $1000 deposit. Motion carried. • Stephanie gave details of the contract with the hotel and said that it is the best she has been able to find in the Richmond area. There are some space requirements that will need to be addressed. Ethics Committee - No inquiries to report. Finance Committee - as presented by Sharon Younce • Sharon advised that the Finance committee met Monday morning, August 27th , prior to the board meeting. Sharon asked Don Aitama to present the report. • Don stated that the Capital One card is charging us a $35 annual fee. He made a Motion to look into getting a new credit card without an annual fee. Bobby Carlson asked how much we typically spend on the credit card. Don and Polly replied we don’t put much on it, typically because the Association has had such a low credit limit. Don recommended that we try to get a higher limit and have a card with a cash-back rebate. With additional charges on the card, there will more cash back to save us money. He suggested that Kitty Pugh use the card for the magazine printing and that he and Renny will charge supplies, postage, etc. If the VPPA can charge hotel costs for Conventions and Seminars, it would greatly increase the amount of rebate paid. Motion carried Print Salon Report - as presented by Pat Hansen • Pat advised that Wolfgang is still in training to take over for Pat, possibly in 2014. • Five speakers for 2013 will also be judging, one will be the jury chair; however, she needs to fill out the rest of the panel. • Pat, Wolfgang, and Beth will be testing the software to see if they can work out the glitches. • Pat suggested bringing in Gordon Kreplin to judge and possibly do a pre-con program. Magazine Report - No report. Latest issue is out and most members have received it. Website – as presented by David Lee Michaels • David Lee has created a VPPA Facebook page for the general public and it is set to go live. • He is researching copyright issues. CVS is apparently allowing people to print straight from Facebook if they check a box saying they have the right to print that image. • Don and David Lee are trying to get with Jeff Burton about modifying membership renewal procedures on the website and creating a reminder system for dues payments. • Registration for the seminar has been seamless. • Convention teaser information is already on the website. Membership Report • David Lee Michaels stated that Capital and Tidewater still need liaisons. Library Report - A written report was presented and attached to the permanent minutes. Appointed Committee Reports • Term Limits will be discussed at the next board meeting. Old Business • Jim Carpenter made a Motion and it was carried to refrain from selling the original trailer at this time. Since the Association has to paid fees, insurance, etc., there was discussion on whether the print committee should use it rather than just having it sit empty. As it is, storage of the equipment is spread out among several different members. It would save trying to coordinate which member has what piece of the equipment when it is needed if it could all be stored in one central location. New Business - No new business was brought to the Board. PPA Report – as presented by David Lee Michaels • David Lee advised that four councilors have been elected - David Lee Michaels, Kevin Hurley, Anthony Rumley and Charles Lawson. The councilors will attend a mandatory training meeting at Imaging USA in January, 2013. SEPPA Report as presented by Anthony Rumley • April 12, 2013, pre-con. There will be several classes offered. • April 13 – 16, 2013, convention will be held in Athens, GA. • Starting in 2014 Conventions will most likely be in Atlanta to make it easier to access. • They are talking about having an executive members meeting from each state for training. Kevin Hurley will attend in 2013. Summer Seminar Report as presented by Bobby Thigpen • Bobby advised that 60 rooms have been booked. B&S Picture Frames and the VPPA Library are the only Trade Show vendors. There are still four tables available. • Sharon brought up talking with Richmond Camera. Anthony will speak to Blake Bullard. • Pat suggested talking to Robert Holman and John Waters to see if there are any local vendors who might be interested in coming. • Don Aittama stated that expenses should not be very high. We’re only looking at just the hotel and Adrian Hensen’s expenses. • Don also brought up doing a photographer auction to raise money. • Bobby Thigpen asked about getting Districts to sponsor coffee breaks. • Renny Cave reminded the governors to promote raffling off a one year membership to VPPA. • Tracy McGee is in charge of door prizes. Future Board Meetings - The next VPPA Board meeting will be held Monday, November 5th at Richmond Sheraton Park South Hotel in Richmond. - A Motion was made and carried to Adjourn.

Learning Painter

One Brush at a Time (Learning from the Master) By Eric Green, CPP, AFP

I had the great fortune to spend a week this summer with digital art pioneer and Painter Master Jeremy Sutton. His work embodies a creative mix of techniques borrowed from the old masters and his own unique use of color and texture. His works are easily identifiable by his personal style. In this article, I will the offer lessons I gleaned from my week with this amazing artist. Much to my surprise, we spent the first day and a half experimenting with different brushes. I found myself wondering if Jeremy suffered from the same brush paralysis that has been the theme of this series of articles. Did he have the same brush-inspired hesitance that so many complain of or was he leading us somewhere that I didn’t see as yet? The fact that he had us sharing these abstract brush experiments with the class as though they were finished works was even more confounding. His purpose began to become clear as we moved into working from photographs. We had indeed been creating abstract paintings that, if done convincingly, could stand on their own. These abstracts had roughly similar compositions and color make up as their source images. The layering of different brush strokes wasn’t done just to find interesting brushes or useful settings; they were highly layered textures perfect for painterly backgrounds. The pursuit of deep textures and layers of colors even extended to our mistakes. Jeremy insisted that mistakes be worked into the paintings-creating even more texture. Corel Painter has long had the ability to step backward multiple times using [Ctrl/Cmd Z]. However, since Rembrandt didn’t have an undo button, neither did we! (fig.1) Many in the class were surprised that we went several days into the clinic before any mention of painting details. Just a few days before, while sharing our reasons for taking the class, we stated almost in unison the desire to produce more painterly, less photographic Fig. 2 Fig. 1 paintings. Now, with equal unanimity, we were itching to learn new techniques for painting eyes, hair and other details. We were universally missing the point. In Jeremy’s words, paintings are often more convincing when they are suggestive instead of detailed. This lesson did not sink in until, while I was sketching a ballerina onto an abstract background, Jeremy emphatically told me “Stop painting … you’re done … it’s beautiful!” Before fully realizing what my hero had just said, I thought to myself, “But what about the eyes.” The master artist continued, “You have to know when to stop … If you don’t, everything you paint will look like a photograph.” (fig.2) I hope to bring more of the many lessons from this iconic master soon … but for now let’s have some fun. Here’s a quick grungy comic book technique I used to create a fun image of Mr. Sutton. Step One: Open the image and create a clone. [Files>Quick Clone] (fig.3)

Step Two: Fill the canvas with a background color of your choice. [Edit>Fill] Step Three: Create an embossed line drawing using the original luminance [Effects>Surface Control>Apply Surface Texture] and choose original luminance from the drop down box. Adjust the settings to taste and select OK. Apply Surface Texture again, this time, with the invert dialog box selected. (fig.4) Step Four: Create a new layer [Layers>New Layer] Fill the layer as in step two. Paint a loose abstract using any highly textured brush. I used square chalk from the chalk category. Change the blending mode for this layer to Hard Light Mode. This will change your muck up into a grungy overlay. Step Five: Click on the bottom canvas layer and again create a new layer. Use this layer to flatly color in skin, hair and other details. Each area could be done on a separate layer for extra control. Adjust the layer opacity to taste. (fig.5)

IN THE NEWS continued from page 5 VPPA Board of Directors’ Minutes from meeting of Monday, November 5th, 2012, held in Richmond, Virginia • The Meeting was Called to Order by Anthony Rumley and an Invocation given by Jim Carpenter. • Proxy Votes: Robert Harris represented James Cook for Capital District. Minutes from last meeting • A Motion was made and carried to accept the minutes as presented from the last meeting. Executive Treasurer’s Report – as presented by Don Aittama • Don reviewed the Treasurer’s Report. He stated that we came out a little better off than originally budgeted. The Summer Seminar took in about $988. The total Convention expense for the year was $28,465. We have spent $22,347 in general and administrative costs vs. the budget amount of $21,849. Don moved down to the bottom line of the budget and stated that we have spent $65,787 vs. the budget of $75,428, which is favorable. The budget had predicted a loss of $745, but there was a positive variance to the budget of $5,386. The Association had a loss of $11,000 in dues but picked up $5,000 in other income. The report reflected a loss in the scholarship fund of $4,273.95. Overall the financial statement was better than budgeted. Considering the number of members lost last year, this was a good sign and showed fiscal responsibility. A Motion was made and carried to accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented. New Member Applications – as presented by Don Aittama • Don mentioned that he had heard from some members who are choosing not to renew, and there are several who are downgrading from Additional Active to Office Staff. Don stated that he overlooked bringing two applications with him and will send them electronically to the board. He stated who the members were. A Motion was made and carried to accept the applicants provisionally if they have fulfilled all the requirements of membership. Executive Secretary’s Report – as presented by Renny Cave • Renny welcomed all new and returning Board members. She stated that all board members need to be visible to the membership at seminars, conventions, etc., and at District meetings. The Board must be available for members to voice concerns, objections etc. The Board was asked to give consideration to read and respond to all emails regarding VPPA. If a group consensus is sent out, please respond with a reply to all so that all members can see the votes. • Current governors were asked to turn in credit requests for speakers and officers. It was recommended that all officers moving into a new job positions read the policy manual and become familiar with their new duties. • Current Governors were instructed to pass along the policy manual and all information to the new Governors. Materials were passed out to new governors. Governors need to bring written reports to all meetings. • A CD containing templates for Governors’ reports, Treasurer’s reports, contracts for speakers, a district mailing list, etc. was given to each incoming Governor. The mailing list needs to be kept as current as possible. District newsletters need to go out to executive board members, as well as district members. • Current applications were also in the packet, printed on blue paper. New stationary was included, listing contact information for all new officers. • Rebates are to be used for education of members. These can be used for social functions as well, but for the benefit for all members of the district. Don stated that rebate checks have already been sent out to the Districts. • The Liaison for the Governors this year is the VPPA President, Kevin Hurley. Kevin or Renny are available to answer any questions that the Governors may have if questions remain after the Governor has read their policy manual. District Governors’ Reports – submitted in written form • All Districts presented reports and copies of these are attached to the permanent minutes. Convention 2013 – as presented by Jim Carpenter • Jim requested two additional speakers, the Muncys and Don Aittama. Adding these speakers will bear no cost to the organization. A Motion was made and carried for approved of additional speakers. • Jim stated that the Convention has 13 scheduled speakers. • Joe Parker agreed to chair the photographers’ auction. Jim Sanders will be in charge of the raffle for the Polly Frye scholarship. • There will be a pre-convention class. The speaker will be Gordon Kreplin and the class will be held at Kevin Hurley's studio. Jim proposed charging $50 for attendance and limiting the class to 15 attendees. It was pointed out that Extra Day for Extra Pay functions usually cost $99 to attend. David Lee voiced concern over that price for a pre-Convention class. Pat pointed out another reason not to charge so much would be the added expense to attendees for having to obtain a hotel room for an additional night in order to attend the preconvention class. Stephanie mentioned maybe $79 would be a good price point and a compromise. The pre-con class cost at present does not cover lunch for the attendees, but a sponsor for lunch could be sought. A Motion was made and carried to set the cost for the preConvention program at $79. • Jim thanked David Lee Michaels and his wife, as well as Kevin Hurley and his staff for their help. • Pat Hansen asked Jim about rooms listed as comp rooms and mentioned one for an “unknown judge”. This person will be paying for his/her own room because people who come only to judge have to cover their own rooms. • Stephanie Adams passed around registration form. • Kevin brought up the issue that if you're a SEPPA or PPA member attending the convention, that $95 leaves no incentive for these individuals to join VPPA. A Motion was made and carried to increase the attendance fee for these individuals to $175 before the cutoff date, and continued on page 8

Sharon recommended changes to registration form were presented to Stephanie. A Motion was made and carried to accept the registration form with slight changes. • Regarding the upcoming 2013 convention, Kevin stated that he is going to try to get 4over, Inc. to donate postcards again to distribute to camera stores, schools, etc. • Renny followed up with PPA about items they had to raffle off and use. PPA approved this and we will receive certificates later this year and they will cover 2014 dues with the PPA certificate. Since PPA president will be present, Renny stated that she would like to see something special done and have him make the announcement when the prize is given. Convention 2014 – as presented by Stephanie Adams • Stephanie has spoken to a few speakers. She has a verbal commitment from Randy Collier from Utah. His fee is $1,500 with a sponsorship of $750, and he is willing to judge. • Gregory Daniel does amazing family portraits. His fee is $2,500 fee, with no sponsorship, but he is flexible and willing to work with us, and he is also willing to judge. • Joe Edelman does glamour. Stephanie would like for him to do a shootout. His fee is between $1,000-$1,800, depending on how long a program we require. He is working on obtaining sponsorship. • Travis Hugelman’s fee is $2,000 with sponsorship from WHCC and Larsen. What the sponsors are willing to provide will depend on how many people we are expecting to have in attendance. He is also willing to judge. • Stephanie requested approval for Randy Collier, Gregory Daniel, Travis Hugelman, and Joe Edelman, depending on budget. A Motion was made and carried to approve Stephanie’s request for speakers. • Kevin mentioned to Stephanie to check the PPA website to see if these judges are affiliated. Convention 2015 – as presented by Tracy McGee • Tracy mentioned that she already has a few speakers possibly interested in presenting programs, all of which are affiliated judges and offering to judge as well. One speaker interested in coming is Rick Massarini. • The 2015 convention theme will be something along the lines of an Egyptian theme. • The dates for the 2015 convention will be February 20-24, 2015. Ethics • Sharon stated that there are no inquiries to report, based on an e-mail that was sent to her by Fred Powell. Finance Committee – as presented by Sharon Younce • Don had to leave, but on his behalf, Sharon stated that the finance committee recommended that for the members who only paid half of their membership dues when they joined after March 15, they will then be billed for half the stated amount for renewal in November. In accordance with his recommendation, a Motion was made and carried so that the membership fees for 2013 may be adjusted accordingly. • Kevin Hurley presented additional recommendations from the Finance Committee: a) All new members who join between Sept 15 – Mar 15 would pay the full amount of membership dues per category and won’t be billed again until October of following year and, b) Part of the recommendation is also that new members joining between Mar 16 – Sep14, pay half of the amount of their membership dues per category. • A Motion was made and carried that any member joining between Sept 15 – March 15, would pay full amount of membership dues per category, or joining Mar 16 – Sept 14 will pay half. • Sharon made a Motion on Don’s behalf to pay the money back to the scholarship fund that had been borrowed to purchase the new projector in the amount of $3,570. The money would come from the surplus that is in the general fund. Motion carried. • Don is in the process of replacing the Capital One card with a Chase card which gives a 2% rebate on purchases. • Sharon made a Motion and it was carried that Renny, Kitty and Don be able to use this card. Print Salon report – as presented by Pat Hansen • Pat stated that Gordon Kreplin is going to be 6th judge. • At Seminar, Pat had a lot of problems with the Print Salon computer and needs a new battery for the Mac computer. • A Motion was made and carried that Pat to be allowed to purchase a battery. • Pat stated that there were problems last year regarding people who entered prints in EI category. Entries in that category need to have work prints. Multiple awards could not be awarded due to not having work prints. • Kevin Hurley asked for clarity on the cutoff date for paying membership dues in order to be able to enter prints in print competition. In previous years, members have shown up with print cases, dues, late fees and print case fees at convention. Magazine Report – as presented by Kitty Pugh • Kitty requested that board member bios be kept reasonable in length. She needs an updated photo and bio from each board member- especially the new board members. • Kitty is waiting on info from Jim for magazine. Kitty liked using Dropbox with Kevin last year. Website – as presented by David Lee Michaels • David Lee mentioned that he has created a new internal email address. Previously, his email account was a hit or miss on spam and receiving emails. The new email address is VPPA@davidleemichaels.com, and this new email address should prevent the same problems from happening in the future. • David Lee asked for headshots from new Governors, new executive board members and/or updates from existing board members for website. This will also help Renny and Kitty. He stated that the facebook page and videos from conventions, etc. could help generate new members. He requested the President’s message. continued on page 9

What Can We Do For You? The members of this organization know how important it is to belong to this professional photographic association. It denotes a level of proficiency and competence to current and prospective clients. The continuing education offered increases our pursuit of excellence in our art. All of that being said, the VPPA membership lists are and have been declining precipitously in the last few years. It is easy to blame the lackluster economy, and that definitely has had an effect. If you are not taking advantage of the District meetings, the seminar and the Convention, it might be hard to justify paying the dues. The Board has worked very hard to pare spending down to the bone, yet still be able to offer you a big bang for your bucks. Elsewhere in this issue you can read about the exceptional line up of speakers that Jim Carpenter has gathered for you. These people do not come to us for free. The hotel, the print competition, the social events—all of these cost money to provide. The Board has chosen the hotel in Roanoke for the last two years not for the convenience but because of the wonderful advantages that they offered us that helped to save money. Because members said that they have a hard time leaving their studios for the whole Convention, the schedule was shortened without losing any important events. The number of magazine issues has been reduced. There is only one seminar instead of three. The Board has done many more things both small and large in an attempt to keep the bottom line in the black rather than the red. But it won’t happen unless the members are willing to support the organization. So please tell us what we can do for you that will make you not only willing but eager both to stay as a member and to recruit new ones. Your District Governor (and every member of the Board of Directors) is available and ready to hear any constructive suggestions or any concerns that you may have. Give your professional association a boost. We want you to be the best that you can be and to offer an outstanding opportunity for all the professional photographers in Virginia. Help us to do that.

Can you imagine daydreaming about the possibility of one day escaping on a safari to the wilds of Africa? Given no constraints, most people would jump at the chance to embark on just such an adventure. Today, with advancements in technology we can widen our horizons using virtual reality and taking virtual travels. With that in mind, I would like to ask you to close your eyes and clear your mind. Think of the African continent full of wild animals, vine-covered jungles, cascading waterfalls, and endless undiscovered lands. When you awake, you will find yourself entering the wilds of Africa. As your tour guide, let me welcome you to the VPPA 2013 Safari Convention. Don’t worry, there is no need to learn “Swahili” to communicate on this adventure. Grab your camera and come with me! This is one photographic opportunity you don’t want to miss! Our group of digital archaeologists will dig deep to unearth new forms of enlightenment. As the composition of our group becomes clearer, we may even stumble upon a rare find - unique ways to generate business currency. Before the ceremonial beginning of the Safari Convention, we will plant our spears in a circular formation and receive an opening message from Gordon Kreplin. On our desert adventure from beginning to end, sunrise to sunset, there will many tribal leaders who will guide us to safety from various pitfalls using photographic magic. On day one, William Albert Allard will amaze you with his depiction of the African continent acquired on his personal adventures as a National Geographic photographer. Day two, Jeff Lubin will teach us how to capture better images of ‘jungle’ children. We will relax and rehydrate after being fed by our chief cook. Reenergized and ready to continue our exploration, we will learn about Fusion with Vanessa Joy and Rob Adams. A nearby fire pit will allow Randy McNeily the stomping ground necessary to discuss the Renaissance of Portraiture where craftsmanship and technique are the most valuable tools for creating timeless fine art. No evening under the jungle stars would be complete without a ceremonial battle between two old rivals. An electronic battle will ensue between Pocket Wizards and Radio Poppers hosted by Don Attaima. Following a spectacular sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro, we begin day three with the M & M Boys (Bruce and Brian Muncy) discussing the balance between business and personal life. Bruce will offer a personal devotion as well. After so many days traveling through desert heat, listening to the shrieks and sounds of wild animals in the distance, and marveling at the picturesque landscape around us, we will need to restock our backpacks with supplies to continue on our journey. IN THE NEWS continued from page 8 Membership Report – as presented by David Lee Michaels • The New Member Committee still needs liaisons from Tidewater and Capital. David Lee stated that over the summer not much progress was made on the new member committee, but he would like to get it moving ASAP. He requested candidates for district liaisons for new member committee. • David Lee stated that he would like to see space at the tradeshow to promote VPPA to visitors of the tradeshow; he thinks it needs to be more than just a basic booth. It needs to be something that would be more interactive and make people want to talk to us. Renny recommended that this be set up at the registration desk since everyone must go there first and it stays open during the whole Convention. Library Report – as presented by Eric Green • Written report was submitted and reviewed by the Board. Appointed Committee Reports • Stephanie Adams discussed setting term limits for non-rotating board positions. She mentioned the possibility of instituting a limit such as 4 years so that it gives chance for evaluation of positions and also presents an opportunity for members to look over things just in case any unforeseen issues arise or a newly appointed chairperson fails to fulfill duties. Stephanie stated that she feels it would alleviate any underlying stress on this matter. • Bobby Carlsen discussed unusual structure of VPPA Executive Board NOT having limits on non-rotating board positions or periodic reviews of chair holder’s performance. They feel that appointing positions to people with voting rights, with no potential for new members to move into positions creates a problem if something were to happen to someone holding current positions because it would leave no room for training someone to take over position if something bad were to arise. • Bobby also voiced concern about overall perception and opinions of the members with regards to the board being so difficult to participate in. In order to keep the Association alive, it may be prudent to consider changes, encourage new ideas and new involvement. He agreed with Stephanie and felt that terms limits and a review process were good ideas. • Stephanie recommended implementing 4 year terms for current permanent board members. Anthony recommended that the Committee meet again and decide on specific recommendations to present to the board. Other committee reports • Pat Hansen, Anthony Rumley and Sharon Younce were charged with coming up with a disclaimer statement to accompany a CD that will show award winning images from the Convention. Such statement was presented to the Board as follows: The statement reads: “The images recorded on this CD/DVD are artistic in nature. They are produced by members of the Virginia Professional Photographers’ Association. They may contain material that is not appropriate for all age groups.” • A motion was made and carried to accept the wording for the Disclaimer as presented. Old Business • Renny reviewed policy manual changes. • The first change was to the description of duties for the Assistant to the Executive Treasurer. It established this as a voting position. The second was to waive dues if the duties were satisfactorily fulfilled. A Motion was made and carried to accept same.The second change gave a definition of the membership committee. The Membership Committee will be listed under standing committees. Motion made and carried. • The other changes reflected current policy. • It was suggested that the VIP program be eliminated for lack of interest. Motion made and carried. • The new Table of Contents reflects these changes. • Renny stated that changes approved earlier concerning dues payments made the printed applications incomplete and she will have them reprinted. The VPPA no longer has an 800 number. Renny put her phone number on the applications in its place. Ethics Committee Appointments • It was time for Tidewater and Blue Ridge to have appointments. John Warters and Jim Crawford are both willing to serve again. A Motion was made and carried that they both be re-appointed for a term of 2 years each. • Bobby Carlsen mentioned the lack of a proposed budget for 2013. A proposed budget would give committees a chance to voice needs and to better visualize needs as the board moves forward. Sharon stated that the original budget proposed covered more than one year. The Committee has been and will continue to work on the budget. Bobby recommended that the Board go through formal budget proposals. Transition of Officiers: • At the conclusion of Old Business, the Transition of new officers occurred. All outgoing officers and Governors were recognized and thanked for their service • New Governors are Robert Harris, Sharon Davidson, Elizabeth Bailey and Keith Forrest. New Business • Renny stated that it was time to vote on Virginia’s PPA affiliation. The Association must agree to abide by PPA’s rules, to submit all requested documentation and to pay the $300 fee. A Motion was made and carried to proceed with the affiliation. • A Motion was made and carried that the print salon chair be allotted one service credit for each member serving on the convention print committee. The Chair should set the criteria for this credit and may choose not to award a credit if she/he feels the member did not fulfill the criteria. Chair must submit a written list no later than one day prior to the awards dinner. • A Motion was made and carried that the Convention Chair be allotted an additional 9 service credits for a total of 25, but may not award more than 2 to any one individual. He has earned from the PPA learned how to get good exposures without using a light meter. After starting a career his Master’s, Photographic Craftsman, Certified Professional Photography and as an accountant in 1983, Don set aside his camera and with the exception of family Photographic Excellence degrees and the Virginia Fellow Photographer degree. He has pictures, rarely took it out. In 2001, Don received a digital camera for Christmas and been the Grand Photographic Winner for the state of Virginia 5 times in 10 years. He became interested in photography again. This led to a strong interest in pursuing photography as a second career and he started photographing weddings in has been the recipient of the prestigious Eastman Kodak Gallery Elite Award, 12 FUJI professional 2004. Don joined the PPA in 2005 and the VPPA in 2008. Don’s accomplishments Masterpiece Awards, 4 Kodak Gallery Awards, and Best in Show for State and Region so far include completing the CPP Exam in 2010 and earning the PPA Silver Level 4 times. Dues Billing Change By Don Aittama, CPP

Over the past two months, we have been working with our developer, Proofcast, to set up an automatic dues billing system through our web site at www.vppa.org. We have cleared out old balances that caused problems in being able to register for the convention last year and made numerous corrections to the membership data base that is included in the web site. Going forward you will now receive your invoices for your dues via email only (I may still do a complete mailings in December or January if dues payments have been lagging). If you prefer to receive your dues billing via mail, please contact me and I will set it up so that the web site billing system will print an invoice that I can mail. Emails will go out every 15 days as a reminder to pay your dues starting with November 1 of each year. Emails will also only go out to members who have not paid their dues. If you think you have received an email in error, please contact me. You will have 3 options for paying your dues: 1. Print the email out, sign the ethics statement and send the signed form along with your check or credit card information directly to me at the address given on the invoice. 2. Access your account on the VPPA web site and pay your account balance directly through the web site. 3. Request a monthly payment plan by contacting me. Because this system relies on the accuracy of your membership listing with VPPA, it is important that you keep your basic membership information up to date, including 1. Address 2. Phone numbers 3. Web site 4. Email address To this end, I would urge all members to review their listing on the VPPA web site and submit corrections if needed. You can access your web site listing by clicking on: “Membership” and then “Member Profile Update”. You will need your user ID and password to access your membership record. If you can’t remember them, we can help you to gain access to your membership record. Alternatively, you can always send me any corrections and I will be happy to make sure that your listing is corrected. You can either call me, mail me a letter or send me an email. PPA Report – as presented by David Lee Michaels • Anthony Rumley will be the PPA Councilor on the Board going forward representing all Virginia PPA Councilors and will have the vote for that position. All of the councilors will be having an all day training day prior to Imaging USA in January 2013. SEPPA Report – as presented by Robert Holman • Robert stated that SEPPA will be April 10-14, 2013 in Athens, GA for the last time. Attendees will need to pre-register or pay an additional fee. VPPA is allowed two 8x10 ads in the SEPPA magazine to advertise their convention and seminars. Robert recommended taking advantage of this free advertising. Summer Seminar report – as presented by Bobby Thigpen • Bobby’s final report is attached to the permanent minutes. Don Aittama proposed to cut checks to districts for the distribution of funds from the profit of the Seminar. $900 of the hotel fee was for the meeting room space and the remainder of the hotel fee was for rooms for speakers. • Renny brought up that the $210 brought in from the membership raffle can not be counted as income because it does not pay for a full membership. There is a $30 loss. • Also, Don brought up to Renny that the seminar funds should be accounted for through the state fund and not the district funds. This was tabled until the Jan board meeting. • Renny reminded the governors that they will work together for the next seminar but will have separate duties. Capital will be hosting the summer seminar. There is a seminar report template and a vendor contract on the cd in the governor’s packet. Governors were urged to get the dates out to the membership so they can put it on their calendars and constantly remind them so they will be aware. Future Board Meetings • The next VPPA Board meeting will be held on Monday, January 7th, 2013, at the Richmond Sheraton Park South, in Richmond. • A Motion was made and carried to adjourn. VPPA Board of Directors’ Minutes from Meeting of Monday, January 7th, 2013, held in, Richmond, Virginia • The Meeting was Called to Order by Sharon Younce and an Invocation given by Jim Carpenter. Proxy Votes conferred in writing • Sharon Davidson stated that she held a proxy vote for David Lee Michaels and Renny Cave for Polly Frye. Minutes from last meeting – A Motion was made and carried to accept the Minutes from the last meeting as presented. Executive Treasurer’s Report - as presented by Don Aittama • Don discussed the members with delinquent dues. He described the new billing system that automatically sends out the statements on November 1st. This is repeated for those who have not paid every 15 days up until the end of February. He stated that there are only a dozen members without email addresses on file, and he mailed out the bills for those. • Upon questioning, Don admitted that there had been some glitches in the system. Some people had received notices after they had paid dues. With careful updating, this should not happen again. • Don reviewed the budget projection for 2013. Last year the Association experienced a loss of about $691. He stated that the challenges going into this year will be greater. Approximately 20 members have already cancelled their memberships, and there has been a decline in dues coming in from those outstanding. • Don has upgraded his cell phone through Intuit so that he has the capability to accept credit card payments. He stated that by running the payments this way, the credit card fees will be a lot cheaper than those charged by the company that we are currently using for our website. This should be one way to save some money. Don stated that having reduced the expenses of the VPPA magazine by 1/3 will also be beneficial to the bottom line. • Don referred to Anthony’s previous suggestion that money from the general fund be transferred annually to the scholarship fund. He stated that if 10% is conveyed to the scholarship fund, the deficit will be covered. In the future, the number of scholarships might need to be reconsidered. Don suggested an endowment fund as a possibility for housing some of the scholarship funds. This could be helpful in generating additional funds. He stated that the scholarship fund is likely to show a negative balance of about $4000. Don stated that the Association can’t continue on like this or there will come a time when there is no funding for any scholarships. • Regarding scholarship funds - Don stated that the total commitment is currently a little over $5000 unless changes are made. Renny stated that the O’Neal and McDearmid scholarships were already decreased to $750. • There were discussions regarding concerns over the amount of outstanding dues. Don stated that he anticipates continuing to receive membership dues right up until the end of February. He also stated that members will be unable to register for the Convention through the website without having current dues. Delinquent members would be unable to attend the Convention until their dues have been paid. • At present, 63 members have not paid and 19 members have requested to resign their VPPA membership. Renny urged the members of the Board to look over the list of members with delinquent dues as well as the list of those who elected to cancel their membership. Governors and all Board members were asked to reach out to them to see whether their memberships can be retained. • Don stated that he has a total of 6 Certificates of Deposit that he would like to put into a higher yielding CD. • Renny mentioned that some districts have a standing policy of making a donation to the memorial scholarship fund when a district member or a close relative of a district member passes away. • Don would like to see us actively use the Capital One card to earn 1-2% rebates back for a nice chunk of money. • A Motion was made and carried to accept the Treasurer’s report as presented. New Member Applications – as presented by Don Aittama • Don stated that there was one application coming in, but that he did not have the actual application in hand. VPPA Fall Seminar September 8-10, 2012 Crown Plaza Hotel, Williamsburg, Virginia Photos by Don Aittama The Fall Seminar was hosted by the Tidewater District in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the Crown Plaza Hotel at Fort Magruder. Bobby Thigpen, Tidewater District Governor chaired the event, with the other three District Governors — Bobby Carlsen, Blue Ridge; James Cook, Capital; and Don Aittama, Northern, serving on the Committee. A good time was had by all who attended. Some of the speakers included: Adrian Henson, Cathy Benton, Anthony Rumley, Don Aittama, Jeanette Burkle, Jim Carpenter, Bruce Muncy and Charles Lawson.

A Motion was made and carried to approve the membership. Executive Secretary’s Report - as presented by Renny Cave • Renny emphasized the importance of the Governors being present at all meetings, greeting all members and guests, bringing applications to every meeting and representing the district and VPPA in general in the best possible light. They are charged with making it as easy as possible for photographers to apply for membership. Renny asked the Governors to reach out to members who haven’t yet paid their dues and requested that they check in with them and see if they can encourage them to retain their memberships. She mentioned to the Governors that they must be sure to keep the District Secretaries apprised of all new and removed members in order to keep their email lists current. • Renny stated that PPA affiliations for the districts should have been completed by Dec. 31st. If a Governor has not yet submitted this paperwork, he/she should contact Cinnamon Draper at PPA asap so that all districts are affiliated and able to issue merits to speakers and judges in their districts. • Concerns were addressed over district affiliations with PPA not being submitted in a timely fashion, and the possibility of reconsidering the current process of affiliation renewals. Renny was asked to contact PPA to see whether there might be another option for this policy that may reduce the instances of lapsed affiliations. • Renny discussed the importance of Governors knowing their responsibilities and doing their jobs. Any officer who neglects their duties can be removed. She pointed out that the President takes the responsibility for initiating this action. District Governors’ Reports – presented in written form • All district reports were complete, except Tidewater which only presented a Treasurer’s Report. A Motion was made and carried to accept all Reports as presented. Convention 2013- as presented by Jim Carpenter • Jim discussed the tradeshow booths that have currently committed. The list of tradeshow vendors is attached to the permanent minutes. Jim stated that David Maheu has donated a backdrop and that this will make an excellent raffle item. • Jim reported that Gordon Kreplin’s pre-convention program already has 7 registrants. • The Convention postcards, unfortunately, were printed with incorrect dates on them. Kevin Hurley stated that he printed 70 registration forms in order to get them into people’s hands and the dates on the postcards can be easily corrected with a marker. • T-shirts promoting the Convention were available for sale with women’s sizes offered this year. $20 was decided for the selling price. • Renny mentioned that even though it wasn’t listed on the Convention schedule, there will be an 8 a.m. board meeting on the Tuesday of Convention. • Jim asked whether we decided to have a tradeshow booth for VPPA to promote ourselves, as mentioned by David Lee Michaels at the last Board meeting. Renny stated that it was decided at the last meeting that this would be set up alongside the registration desk for the duration of the Convention. • Jim encouraged those attending PPA Imaging in January to try to encourage people to attend our Convention and to participate in our association. • Kevin Hurley asked whether Jim has been able to keep to the budget. Jim stated that he is possibly over budget, but hasn’t accounted for the money that will be coming in for the Photographers’ Auction, raffles, etc. Convention 2014 – as presented by Stephanie Adams • Stephanie stated that she plans to contact more speakers. Her goal involves getting as much as possible done by June. • Sharon Younce encouraged Stephanie to put something in the PPA magazine announcing the dates of the 2014 convention. Convention 2015 – as presented by Tracy McGee • Tracy has begun putting out feelers for speakers through some of her PPA and various state contacts. She has mentioned the 2015 convention to the vendors with whom she has a working relationship. There will be an Egyptian theme for the 2015 convention. Seminar Report – as presented by Robert Harris • Robert Harris stated that they are trying to decide who is doing what for the Seminar and that they will discuss this and have the information ready for the convention. He was urged to select the hotel and set the dates as soon as possible and to publicize it as soon and as often as possible. Ethics Committee Report – as presented by Renny Cave for Fred Powell • Renny reported that Fred informed her of one issue that has been brought to the attention of the Ethics Committee. The committee has taken steps to handle it. Fred will inform the Board if any action is necessary. Finance/Audit Committee Report – as presented by Kevin Hurley • Kevin reported that the Finance Committee hasn’t yet met, but he indicated that the number of rooms being comped for VPPA officers and the amount being paid for the Past Presidents’ dinner need to be addressed. • Another suggestion concerns the registration fee paid by PPA and SEPPA members who wish to attend our Convention. It was suggested that Kevin meet with the Finance Committee and come up with a proposal to address these topics. • Don Aittama mentioned that moving the Convention to Roanoke benefited the association because of the decreased fees. He stated his concerns about the increase in charges for the 2014 and 2015 conventions if the membership continues to decline. • Kevin stated that he has contacted all new VPPA members personally, and he reiterated Renny’s statement about the importance of having the Governors also reach out to contact all new members in their districts. • Don requested that Jim use the same type of format this year that Kevin used to report the Convention expenses last year. Print Salon Report – as presented by Pat Hansen • Pat stated that John Shipman from PA is the final judge who has been procured for the 2013 convention. Pat remarked that she will be sending out an email reminding members that their membership dues must be paid in order to participate in print competition. • Pat doesn’t anticipate any major changes in the rules. She introduced Wolfgang Jasper as her associate. She and Wolfgang will be meeting to go over all the equipment, software, etc to be sure it is in order prior to the Convention. They will look over the current rules to determine whether or not any rules are needed. • Pat stated that a letter will go out to the judges this month. continued on page 34

Stephanie will have had time to check the spelling of your name, your degrees, your committee ribbons, and whether or not you've filled out and registered for the proper functions. Please, do this now and save yourself a lot of time at the Registration Desk. Last year at our Convention, thousands of dollars worth of Scholarship money and door prizes were awarded. Many of our Scholarships are by application process and others are by drawing. Forms to register for some of these scholarships can now be found on line at the VPPA website. Here is a list of just a few of some of the morewell known scholarships. • Polly Frye Scholarship - This scholarship pays tribute to our Executive Secretary Polly Frye. Polly is a Past VPPA President and has been a member of our Association for over 60 years. She has received every honor the Association can bestow, including a Life Membership. This is a $1,000.00 scholarship and is drawn at the end of the Convention. • VPPA Memorial Scholarship - This scholarship was begun in 1988 with funds generated from contributions in memory of W.E.A. 'Billy' Moore, a past President of the VPPA. This a $750.00 scholarship and the winner is announced at the convention awards banquet. • Gary ‘King’ Carter Scholarship - This is a $500.00 scholarship established in 1999 with a bequest from the estate of Gary Carter. This scholarship is limited to only those persons who have been Active or Additional Active members of the VPPA 3 years or less. Newer members are notified of their eligibility to receive this scholarship. Those interested must fill out and return a post card signifying their interest in receiving the scholarship. SEPPA 2013 To all of you ole’ timers who have entered prints in competition this year at the VPPA Convention – this is a Reminder; AND, to all of you who are new this year to print competition – Listen UP After you have received all of those fantastic BLUE RIBBONS this year, the next step is for you to package them up and send them on to SEPPA (South Eastern Professional Photographers’ Association) which is scheduled to be held in Athens, Georgia, April 13th – April 16th, 2013. The way it works is: If your print receives a Seal of Approval at SEPPA, it will receive an automatic Print Merit from PPA. This will happen ONLY, however, if you send your prints on to the National PPA Judging that is scheduled to be held this summer, usually in early June, in Phoenix, Arizona. If you enter your prints at Convention on the State level, at SEPPA 2013 in Athens, GA, and then send them on to PPA, three different panels will have had an opportunity to judge and critique your images. What a great way to learn how to become a better photographer. Now keep in mind, if one of the prints submitted at State level or at SEPPA doesn’t score well, trade it out for a different print before sending your entries on to PPA. It’s a difference judging panel and they might like a different print better. IN THE NEWS continued from page 29 • Last year no one on the Print Committee ate much of the food provided, so this year only drinks will be made available. • Pat announced that she was approached to judge at Nationals in 2014, and that she hopes to see many entries from VPPA members. • Pat mentioned that the print committee needs a light meter for the upcoming print competition. Jim stated that he can locate one for the print committee to use. • Jim inquired about the possibility of VPPA allowing digital entries for print competition. Pat stated that PPA had previously said that as soon as they “got all of the bugs out” of their process, they were going to make their equipment and processes available to the state affiliations. They have not yet done this, so some states have now implemented their own systems. Pat predicted that if we were to allow digital entries, we would see more interest in participating in print competition. Magazine Report- as presented by Kitty Pugh • Kitty reported that the magazine is at the printers, but that a few changes could still be made. Millers Professional Imaging will have the inside front cover and the Convention has the back cover. Kitty stated that members receiving PPA degrees and credentials need to make her aware of this because PPA will not. Website Report – as presented by Sharon Davidson for David Lee Michaels • Sharon reported that updated information regarding the Convention is on the website. Members can now register online. She also reported that David Lee has been testing an iphone app that will show program schedules and, if it works, it can also be used for district meetings and Seminars. Because of all of his help, David Lee would like to have the iphoto company’s logo and info on our website and to display the iphoto information at the Convention. A Motion was made and carried to give Jim Cook with MyPhotoApp a corporate membership. • Sharon reported that 13 registrations have been received online with 7 of those registrants having also registered for the pre-con class. • Sharon reported that David Lee was approved to be our CPP liaison. A CPP exam has been scheduled for convention and David Lee would also like to schedule one to be held during the Seminar. Sharon also reported that the CPP award has been ordered. Membership Report – as presented by Sharon Davidson for David Lee Michaels • Nothing to report. Library Report – as presented by Tracy McGee for Eric Green • Tracy reported that the report for the Library reflected a previous account balance of $494.16, a decrease of $10 for bank fees and a final ending balance for this period of $484.16. • Tracy reported that there was one member who had not yet returned a very overdue DVD, “Photographing Models”, and owes the replacement cost of $163 and a late fee of $60. She also reported that one other member had not yet paid her late fee of $60. Kevin stated that he would contact the members about their late fees. Appointed Committee Reports: Registration Committee Report – as presented by Kevin Hurley • Kevin stated that nothing has been done as of yet regarding SEPPA and PPA registration fees. This will be addressed in the summer. Degree Committee Report – as presented by Kevin Hurley • Kevin discussed the degree committee’s feelings on the need to offer a service degree for someone who puts so much into the organization, but who doesn’t participate in print competition. The committee also discussed the need to make it less difficult to earn credits towards our state degrees in order to encourage people to remain active and avoid getting discouraged. Kevin has frequently been told that Virginia is a difficult state in which to earn a degree. This might be viewed as very discouraging to those who otherwise wish to participate. • Kevin also discussed replacing the stars awarded after earning the medallions with bars. This suggestion was based on comments from members who have complained that the stars frequently break. Term Limit Committee Report – as presented by Stephanie Adams • No report. Old Business - No old business was presented to discuss. New Business: • Robert Harris brought up the desirability of increasing VPPA’s online presence by sending out something similar to SEPPA’s monthly online magazine, perhaps quarterly. Renny suggested that while this is being considered, perhaps the district newsletters should be mass emailed out instead of having David Lee send out an email announcing that each is online. Renny made a Motion and it was carried to send all of the newsletters out to the membership • Robert indicated that the District Secretaries now need to send in their newsletters in a timely fashion to David Lee so that he can put them together and send them all out at once. • Kevin requested a volunteer to look into organizing this. Robert Harris volunteered. Kevin will call this the online magazine committee. Names of other members were suggested for consideration as members of the committee. • Tracy McGee inquired about the possibility of offering an album in which all of the Blue and Red, or Blue, Red, and White ribbon prints from the VPPA annual print competition would appear. It would be similar to the one PPA offers for the Loan Collection and the Showcase book. These albums could be pre-purchased and paid for in advance, so there would be no loss to the association. Tracy agreed to get some quotes together and to share the details at a future meeting. • Wolfgang mentioned the VPPA trailer in his backyard that currently only houses a turntable and was curious to know if the association would like to make better use of this trailer. He was told that the trailer is a continuing issue for the Board. The print committee planned to increase the amount of items stored in it after this Convention. PPA Report - Nothing to report SEPPA Report – as presented by Robert Holman • Robert stated that SEPPA will be held April 10 -14, 2013 in Athens, Georgia. Future Board Meetings • The next VPPA Board meeting will be held at Convention on Friday evening, Feb 22, 2013, at 5:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Roanoke. • A Motion was made and carried to Adjourn.

Editor’s Corner . . . continued from page 31 Awards Banquet. • Archie McDearmid Scholarship - This scholarship honors Tidewater District member, Past VPPA President, Past SEPPA President and Past PPA President Archie McDearmid. Archie passed away in 2010 but was a longtime member of the VPPA. He always had a twinkle in his eye, enjoyed serving our organization and mentoring new members. This is a $750.00 scholarship and the winner is announced at the awards banquet. • Carlton O’Neal Scholarship – This Scholarship was originally funded by the Joseph Lust Foundation and continues to be sustained by general scholarship funds. This Scholarship honors a Past President and long time member of the Tidewater District. Carlton has been a mentor to many aspiring photographers by encouraging the development of both the artistic and the business aspects of the profession. This is a $750.00 scholarship and the winner is announced at the awards banquet. • Bruce Hobbs Scholarship - This Scholarship was founded and continues to be funded by many of the people who have benefited over the years from Bruce’s guidance, counsel and support. Mentoring was been a very important part of Bruce’s life. Bruce passed away in June, 201l; but his philosophy was to always help others in their pursuit of this profession. This is a $500.00 Scholarship and is awarded at the end of the Convention. Our Convention will again be one day shorter this year in an effort to help our organization save a little money and lessen the burden of expense for hotel rooms/meals, etc. on our membership. A great deal of care and thought went into re-arranging things in order to make sure you, our membership, still have access to a lot of great quality programming, fun events and networking opportunities. This year’s Convention is cram packed with speakers. There is something for everyone. No Excuses! If you can’t attend the whole Convention, then pick out a day or two; but do what you can and come spend some time with your friends and fellow photography associates. Thousands of dollars in door prizes, auction items and big discounts will be given away. Come ‘Take a Walk on the Wild Side’. Come ‘Let Your Hair Down and Be an Animal’. You might scare up a door prize or two or even take home the Grand Door Prize which will be given away on Tuesday at the end of the Convention. Remember, you must be present to win though. Don’t be a BEAR and stay home all winter hibernating!

by Kevin Hurley, M Photog., FP Low Mileage will be an image that will be with me forever. This is the print that earned me my final print merit for my Masters. I took the photo in the back yard of the studio last winter as the sun was warming the frozen truck. I’ve walked by that truck thousands of times. It was the combination of the steam and condensation that drew my eye to the speedometer that day. I photographed the truck with a Nikon D300 and a 24-70mm lens.
