architecture 2009, Erasmus exchange semester Esslingen, Germany HTF Stuttgart, Germany V. Prilenska, individual project prof. P. Haas The assignment to design a Technology museum was very challenging. The museum was allotted a small plot within a dense urban fabric. The site had height limitations, building lines and was located partially below the street level. The museum had an extensive program with multiple spaces of various sizes and functions. Museum office, temporary and permanent exhibition spaces and museum cafĂŠ had to
have separate entrances. The author aimed to create a complex structure reminding of an intricate mechanism. Museum spaces form a sequence which leads the visitor through the exhibition. Temporary exhibition spaces are located on the ground floor, while permanent exhibition spaces are located on upper levels. Museum cafe is situated above the entrance and has a beautiful view. The spatial quality of the museum exterior and interior is of utmost importance. Therefore, in the concept development phase the author has made multiple small scale models to find the best solution for the exterior and interior spaces.

film setting design 2009, Erasmus exchange semester n/a HTF Stuttgart, Germany V. Prilenska, M. Wurst prof. R. Oelhaf concept author, executor The project was developed for an elective course in Architecture and Film. The students were given an assignment to design a setting for a short story they were given. The authors had to design a transition space, namely the train station. The main character of the story felt frustrated in an infinite monotonous space.
The authors were inspired with scifi movies and visions of the future cities. Therefore, they decided to come up with a futuristic design rather then representation of the current train stations. The model represents a segment of a larger train station structure. The stairs, screens and black signposts create a monotonous rhythm, while the acid green colour of a load bearing structure evokes a sense of anxiety and frustration. The exterior shell is semi-transparent which allows light to penetrate through it. This way natural light fills in the space during the day, while at night, the building illuminates its surroundings.

TU Delft, Netherlands V. Prilenska, individual project prof. ir. H.C. Bekkering, ir. S. Nijhuis The project incorporates an extensive research on the intercity competition and recreation spaces. Based on the works of R. Florida and other researchers the author has linked the spatial quality of the city with its attractiveness for potential residents. On a city scale the project proposes to develop a recreational space network in Riga which would supply the residents with local daily-use recreational spaces and si-
multaneously provide access to large seaside, woodland and lake landscapes outside the city. On a finer scale the city centre waterfront which combines the benefits of the ‘green’ and the ‘blue’ landscapes undergoes significant redevelopment. The busy highway is relocated into a tunnel, while the reclaimed space on the surface is redesigned into a pedestrian boulevard with cyclist paths, sport and catering facilities, children playgrounds. On a local scale the transitional space between the Old Town, Central Market and Central Train Station is redesigned into a landscape park with a small harbour, museum and open air theatre.

urban design 2010, studio project Waarderpolder, Haarlem, Netherlands TU Delft, Netherlands V. Prilenska, individual project ir. M.G.A.D. Harteveld Haarlem is a mid-sized satellite city in the gravitation field of Amsterdam whose residents usually commute to Amsterdam for work and entertainment. The city consists of a historic core and a modernist extension in the east of the city. These two are disconnected from each other both physically and mentally. Firstly, there are only a few bridges across the channel separating the two parts of the city.
Secondly, a run-down image of the modernist extension does not correspond with the chick environment of the city centre. The projects suggests to reconnect both city parts via new bridges and a new mixed use in-between area. The new district is located on a former industrial and infrastructure site, the Waarderpolder. The project suggests to tunnel the railway tracks and use the reclaimed space for residential and commercial development with a public square in the middle. The square concentrates all the pedestrian and cyclist traffic flows and redirects them. In the square five important city axes meet together. Two major axes, north-south and east-west, are emphasized by high-rise office and residential buildings.

Bernati, Latvia Riga Technical University, Latvia V. Prilenska, individual project doc. E. Berzins The Western Coast of Latvia is severely eroded by the Baltic Sea. At the cape of Bernati the coastal erosion is the most dramatic. According to the forecasts in the next 50 years the coastline will move 150 - 200 m inland. The erosion in Bernati is caused by natural reasons and, therefore, is difficult to stop or minimise. The author suggests to use the erosion as an opportunity to shape the islands
along the coast. Currently, Latvia has only one island, Kolka lighthouse, which was made artificially. The author suggests to create a second island which, in contrast to the first one, will be formed in a natural way. The concept is to reinforce the southwestern part of the future island and let the sea currents shape it further on. The possible future location of the island is the settlement of Veckrumi - a group of several houses which currently due to the land erosion stands directly on the beach. The author suggest to develop a scientific centre on the island which would research sea processes, a weather station and a lighthouse.

regional planning & design 2011, studio project Ijsselmonde, Netherlands TU Delft, Netherlands V. Prilenska, E. Machedon, L. Papenborg prof. ir. C.M. de Hoog, D.A. Sepulveda Carmona reasearch, concept development, master planning The island of Ijsselmonde is a low dense farming and industrial area to the south from Rotterdam. It is car-oriented and fragmented by infrastructure barriers. At the same time there are many well-functioning industries and traffic hubs. The project proposes to reconnect
multiple small settlements and towns in the area, while at the same time keeping all the industries in the area and attracting new ones. The greenfield areas in-between the settlements are redeveloped into nature parks, while agriculture landscape is made accessible for the general public. New public transport links, such as ferry and trams, are introduced. The missing segment of an A4 highway is developed with new attractive industrial parks along it. The southern part of the island is protected by a large super-dike which serves at the same time as a cyclist connection between western and eastern settlements. Part of the land is given back to nature for a wetland wildlife reserve.

research, story telling 2011, academic exercise Riga, Latvia TU Delft, Netherlands V. Prilenska, individual project prof. W. Vanstiphout The graphic story was developed as a final assignment for the ‘Blame the Architect’ lecture series by prof. W. Vanstiphout. During the course the connection between the urban riots and built environment was explored. In the end of the lecture series, students were invited to develop their own fictional riot scenarios in their home towns and give their opinion on the above mentioned topic.
The author came up with a fictional riot in Riga based on the true riots that have happened in the city. The story is illustrated by the riot spread maps, fake news reports news agency web pages, city snapshots (from the true riots) and fake reflections in popular culture. The story received high appraisal and was chosen for a ‘Blame the Architect’ exhibition and publication. Published in TU Delft Urbanism student society magazine Atlantis and on the society web page.
