Public Works. Witnesses and law enforcement say that an excavator being transported east on Slater took down a power line before hitting the portal of the bridge over the Nooksack River. Whatcom County senior engineering technician Steve Dillon said that while most responsible commercial drivers have a pilot vehicle ahead of overheight loads, it appears that this driver’s load didn’t even need to be as high as 16 feet — it just happened to be stored in an unusual way.
The driver, Dillon said, didn’t stop after striking multiple upper beams until he was through the entire bridge. The excavator then began to come off the vehicle sideways and damage a guard rail. It appeared, when responders arrived, that the driver was attempting to right the machine and leave the scene. Dillon said the damage to the bridge was severe enough that it will be several weeks before it is reopened. However, they now know that minimal new parts will be required in the repair process, which will also involve straightening the vertical beams. Detour routes set up by the county are currently directing traffic through Ferndale via Ferndale Road and LaBounty Drive, using the Nooksack River bridge on Main Street. Monday’s traffic was notably heavy through Ferndale near the Interstate 5 interchange. According to Sergeant Kevin Davis of the Ferndale Police Department, four separate accident, all of them minor, occurred between LaBounty and Barrett Road on Main Street. Davis noted that it’s not unusual to have a bad spike in traffic accidents. “It does happen,” Davis said. “Some days you don’t get single call. Other days you are running until it’s time to go home.” However, it is hard to ignore the fact that more traffic is being funneled into Ferndale, Davis said. He asks for motorists and pedestrians to be extra alert. Dillon, who has worked for Whatcom County for 22 years, said that this is the third time since 2002 that the Slater Road bridge has been similarly damaged.

FERNDALE — The 2013 City of Ferndale budget process wrapped up with a wimper on Monday, as the Ferndale City Council voted 7-0 to approve it as prepared by Finance Director Mark Peterson. The budget projects general fund expenditures of just over $7.4 million, with revenues coming in at $7.6 million. The result should be a $200,000 growth in the city’s cash balance to $976,775 by the end of the year. This budget process was at first hard to predict until some city revenue streams started to show improvement over the course of the year. In addition, the city also

City settles with Public Utilities District over water supply   FERNDALE — Public Utility District #1 of Whatcom County and the City of Ferndale have agreed to terms regarding the ending of the past water supply agreement, according to a press release by the city.    Since the 1970s, the city of Ferndale had received water from Public Utility District #1 for potable water service to the city’s residents and customers. The PUD treated the water for the removal of sediments and pumped the water to the city’s treatment plant.   The city then further
treated the water to meet applicable state and federal drinking water standards before distribution to its customers. Beginning in January 2012, Ferndale returned to its well system as a sole source of its water supply.    Over the years, the PUD had made substantial capital infrastructure investments for the sole benefit of its delivery of water to the City of Ferndale, and the city had paid a capital charge as part of its rates for facilities that would continue to benefit PUD customers after the city left the PUD’s system. With the ending of the water supply agreement, the city asked the PUD to review the history of the city’s payments to the PUD for “capital infrastructure to determine if there was an appropriate refund to reflect the parties’ respective investments.    Following several months of review and analysis, the city and the PUD have agreed to a $200,000 refund to the City of Ferndale.    “We are grateful to the PUD in their efforts to work with the city to transition to our well system and we recognize that the PUD has a responsibility to constantly improve their system, said Ferndale Mayor Gary Jensen. “For this, they should be congratulated.   Mike Murphy, current PUD board president, said the district is pleased with the his-

Locals who fought in Iraq, Afghanistan to be honored Dec. 15 ‘Welcome home’ event at WCC also hails three Gold Star Families By Calvin Bratt editor@lyndentribune.com
WHATCOM — All who fought in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan can experience a proper welcome home on Saturday, Dec. 15. A patriotic ceremony is being planned for 2 p.m. in Whatcom Community College’s Syre Auditorium, said coordinator Peggy Everett of Custer. An organizing committee has identified about 500 men and women with ties to Whatcom County who have served in the two wars dating back to 2003, Everett said. The Iraq war is officially ended, but 11 from the county are still on duty in Afghanistan, she said. Also, nine families with local connections have lost a member in the fighting, making them Gold Star Families. This includes the
Supporters and mourners lined the streets of Ferndale in November 2009 to honor the arrival of the remains of soldier Aaron Aamot, of Custer, who was killed that year in fighting in Afghanistan. Santos of Bellingham, Aaron S. Aamot of Custer and Daniel B. Bar-

Honoring these Gold Star Families will be a central part of the Dec. 15 service. Doris Kent, mother of San-
tos, will be the main speaker. The program will include the Ferndale High School band and cheerleaders, local Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls, and a bagpipe band. American Legion Post 154 of Ferndale will provide a color guard and a chaplain for prayers. Current Miss Whatcom Kimball Gainor will be the mistress of ceremonies and past winner Jordan Donahue will sing. Ferndale-area church choirs will also participate. The event is open to the public without charge. A reception for the honored troops and their families will follow at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal. RSVP for the reception can be phoned to Everett at 3665808. Everett said she got involved in planning as she realized there has not been any event honoring those locally who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
These men gave Gold Star service These local men died in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning the Gold Star designation for their families: • Army Corporal Jonathan J. Santos, 22, died on Oct. 15, 2004, from injuries
suffered in an attack on his vehicle in Karabilah, Iraq. His unit had been in Iraq just 38 days. A wrestler while at Sehome High School, he joined the Army so his mother wouldn’t have to pay for four years of college. He learned Arabic and became a linguist in his battalion. • Army Spc. Aaron S. Aamot, 22, was killed in action on Nov. 5, 2009 in Afghanistan when his Stryker vehicle on patrol hit a buried explosive. One of eight children in his family, Aaron participated in 4-H and FFA and graduated from Ferndale High School in 2006. He is buried in Haynie Cemetery. • Marine Captain Daniel B. Bartle, 27, died on Jan. 19, 2012 in a helicopter crash while serving his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. He was valedictorian of his Ferndale High School class in 2002. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2006 with a degree in electrical engineering and fluency in Spanish. In the U.S. Marine Corps he earned numerous awards and medals. At least six additional local families have suffered losses within their extended families not living in Whatcom County. The names of these families are being obtained for recognition at the Welcome Home Troops event. Everett may also be called to give such information.

Gladys entered the raffle at the Teresa Garten State Farm Insurance Agency. The Barneses will enjoy a dinner for two at the Silver Reef Steak House as well as an overnight stay at the Silver Reef Casino Resort. The prize is valued at $300. (Mark Reimers /Ferndale Record)

As of Nov. 29, the yearly national average was running at $3.63 per gallon for 2012, all but guaranteeing that this will go down as the year with the highest average ever, reports GasBuddy. Last year’s average price of gasoline nationwide was $3.51 per gallon. “There’s no question that the national numbers were elevated by major supply problems in California over the summer and more recently on the East Coast when Hurricane

The national average has decreased 14.1 cents per gallon during the last month.

Our View
Local needs aren’t hard to find
F
or several years now, some of us have reshaped the way we celebrate Christmas. Perhaps its fewer hours with the Christmas lights on to save on power. Perhaps a new tradition has been born with organized family gift exchanges replacing the all-out shopping binges of decades past. Ironically enough, although they are forms of personal austerity, many of these types of changes, driven as they are by the ongoing recession, aren’t, in fact, all that negative. Perhaps we can learn to spend just a little more time on priceless gifts of our time and love instead of just the toys that always cry for our attention. Perhaps we will actually learn to celebrate what these seasons are about in ways more akin to generations past. The point is, dear reader, the holidays will never be a truly tough time for people in our communities
as long as we have food, shelter and our families and friends to share them with. Look around you. As far as you know, everyone seems have basic provisions in common. But look a little deeper. Ask a few questions. What you learn might shock you and give you a whole new perspective on your own situation in life. Some of those people who are not hungry are well-fed because of dozens of local volunteers who do their work with little fanfare. The need is there. There was a time when the local food bank was seen as a resource for “someone else.” Not so now. More of your friends and neighbors are taking advantage of the food bank when faced with tough decisions. How do you decide, for example, between paying a utility bill or purchasing groceries? Consider this: According to Ferndale Food Bank Director
Suzanne Nevan, usage has grown by between 10 and 20 percent in one year. We already know that isn’t from new people moving here. Just ask the Ferndale School District about stagnant enrollment forcing them to consider closing a school. As long as we are learning about our community, let’s review a few other facts: Over 50 percent of Ferndale School District students are signed up for free and reducedprice lunches. This is considered a marker of living below the poverty line. That’s also up from the 40 percent recorded for the 2006-07 school year. It makes sense, with those kind of numbers, that 38 percent those served by the Ferndale Food Bank are children, according to statistics gathered by Nevan. We at the Ferndale Record are looking around at ourselves and our community — first in amazement at how truly blessed we are this holiday season. And why not? We really do have it so good. But we are also looking around this month for
real needs. Those who serve at the bank are filling a growing need. They deserve all of the support we can give. To make a donation to our Readers Care Fund, give our office a call at 384-1411 or use one of the forms that are supplied in this newspaper. Entirely 100 percent of the funds go to the Ferndale Food Bank. Then, just think, all of those funds will stay right here in Ferndale to help feed both those who need a
lot of help as well as those who never thought they would, but are making the first visit to the bank this year. Our humble goal is $2,000 by the end of December. We hope you find it within yourself to help us along the way toward that goal. Please check out page 6A for information on the drive, a note from our publisher and a clipout donation form. Look for the care fund logo.

The work will involve about 807 guide posts, 3 pole and mast arms, and a lump sum bid for signing. This project is classified Interstate, which means that 90 percent of the cost will be paid from federal funds. The cost is estimated between $25,000 to $50,000.

Letters GPT supporters misguided Gateway Pacific Terminal supporters who’ve been convinced GPT’s coal would be “totally covered” and have “zero emissions” are stunned to learn that, in fact, GPT’s entire 80-acre coal stockpile (five 60-foot high, halfmile long rows) would be uncovered. Coal stockpiles spontaneously combust unless sprayed with water, lots of water. GPT would use 1.9 billion gallons of PUD water per year. GPT would use more water than the entire city of Ferndale. GPT would use one-third the water PUD now supplies six industrial and 50 irrigation customers in the Cherry Point area. In the future, Ferndale residents’ main competitor for water would be GPT. Despite water spraying, millions of pounds of toxic coal dust would escape each year from GPT and blow miles in all directions where thousands live, work, vacation. GPT would be one mile from BP Refinery. Coal dust on BP’s sensors, gauges, valves, etc. would increase risk to BP operations and 850 BP employees. Let’s find out all the facts and impacts before inviting GPT into our community. — Paula Rotondi, Birch Bay

Library system to drop children’s overdue book fine WHATCOM — Effective Jan. 1, 2013, the Whatcom County Library System will not charge overdue fines for children’s materials checked out on children’s library cards. This applies to cardholders age 18 and under. “As part of Whatcom County Library System’s strategic planning process, we looked at ways to support children’s reading. We heard from parents who said that the fear of incurring library fines was one barrier keeping them from getting library cards for their children. This policy change eliminates that barrier,” said Joan Airoldi, WCLS executive director. Children (and their caregivers) will still be responsible for returning library materials, and will still receive overdue notices to remind them to return materials in a timely manner. Similarly, they will be charged the replacement cost if an item is lost or damaged. The main difference is they will not be charged any overdue fines. The change is also effective for the partner Bellingham Public Library. Simultaneously, WCLS will increase fines on adult materials to 25 per item per day to match Bellingham’s practice. Adult fines at WCLS have not increased since being first instituted in the early 1990s. Grace periods will be two days.

The National Weather System is forecasting gusty winds for the next five days. However, Jan Leonardo, director of Whatcom County Emergency Services, said the upcoming barrage of severe weather is part of one large storm that is unleashing itself in several surges. So far, Ferndale and areas outside Blaine’s city limits have had few problems. The Geneva area near Sudden Valley in Bellingham was the hardest hit, where more than 4,000 homes were without power for several hours.

FERNDALE — It’s Christmastime, and the Pioneer Meadows Montessori School is ringing in the holiday season with beautiful music. The Montessori music curriculum allows students to learn music at a young age, instilling a love for music in their hearts and minds early. “It hasn’t been difficult (to teach young children),” said Ellen Lebitz, Pioneer Meadows education director, teacher and co-founder. “What I’ve found is that we’ve really created a sort of culture of music, so we have such a great established group. We have mixed-age classes, so when new first-graders come in, they just sort of incorporate that culture, and they assimilate.” Lebitz said the Montessori music curriculum is integral to a student’s education at Pioneer Meadows, and is treated like another language. “It’s something that everybody should learn,” she said. “In the Montessori program,

Students at the Pioneer Meadows Montessori School play recorders, violins and violas and also sing (below) during a Tuesday afternoon practice for their upcoming performances around Ferndale. (Brent Lindquist/Ferndale Record) we can start really young and do some really specific music listening things and theory presentations with the children, even the really young children.” Music can also be a therapeutic outlet, Lebitz said, and it becomes just that quite often for young children with certain challenges. “We see also that it really helps children, especially ones who might have challenges in other ways, like with concentration or retention or selfcontrol,” Lebitz said. “Playing an instrument really intensely helps them overall do better in their whole life. It helps them focus, and it really helps them build that self-discipline. Once they hear themselves playing beautiful music, you don’t see it in their body. Their body just relaxes.” The children already played their first show last Friday as a practice run. The community will have several more chances to see Pioneer Meadows students play during the holiday season. School Director Kim Connor said students will
showcase their musical skills at the Ferndale Haggen store at 2 p.m. on Friday to raise money for the local food bank. The main event will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Christ Lutheran Church, 5904 Vista Dr., Ferndale. “We always do a big holiday performance for parents and families of the school at the Christ Lutheran Church,” Connor said. “That’s our big deal where we assemble all the kids, both children’s house and elementary. We’ve done this probably for the last three years, probably our third or fourth year over there. It’s really fun.” The Louisa House is their final venue before Christmas, to be played at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18. “Now, we’ve had to pare down and really just do a select group at some of these things, so many kids are playing music,” she said. “It’s a good thing that’s happening.” For more information on the Pioneer Meadows Montessori School, visit www.PioneerMeadowsSchool.com.

Daniel Day-Lewis is arguably the best actor working today, but the guy is famously choosy about the roles he takes on. That’s part of the reason why film fans got so excited when Day-Lewis signed on to play Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s long-delayed “Lincoln” shortly after Liam Neeson dropped out of the role in 2010. Day-Lewis’s most recent work was the oft-maligned 2009 musical “Nine,” and fans were certainly eager to see him do something better. In that regard, “Lincoln” does not disappoint. DayLewis is the film’s centerpiece, and his performance is one for the ages. The film does falter in some respects, but Day-Lewis’s work as the 16th president of the United States coupled with the talent of the film’s immense cast make it a movie worth seeing. “Lincoln” is a film with an identity crisis. On the one hand, Spielberg places Lincoln

front and center. It’s about the man himself, his mannerisms, his politics and the way he deals with the trials and tribulations of the most taxing job in the free world. On the other, Spielberg laser-focuses in on a very small portion of Lincoln’s life —± his work abolishing slavery with the 13th Amendment. The film works far better when it ditches the biopic ambitions altogether. Abraham Lincoln is far too big a figure to fully encapsulate in a 2.5-hour film, and Spielberg and company obviously knew this. Instead of an overarching portrait of the man’s life, we witness the wheelings and dealings that went into getting the 13th Amendment passed. Even without an established history on film, Day-Lewis inhabits the role of Lincoln like no other actor could. Much has been made of his performance, but I never felt like I was watching an actor playing a role. This felt like watching Lincoln, and that was a very special experience. Lincoln’s life are the characters of Mary Todd Lincoln and Robert Lincoln. Spielberg likes to incorporate daddy issues into his movies, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Robert Lincoln is the vehicle for those issues here. He wants to join the Army to help with the war effort, but his parents won’t permit him to do so. Well, Sally Field’s Mary Todd Lincoln won’t. Both Field and GordonLevitt are typically excellent in their roles, but neither feels like a necessary inclusion in the film. “Lincoln” is at its best when it focuses on the campaign to get the 13th Amendment pushed through the House of Representatives. The movie’s vast supporting cast, including Tommy Lee Jones (my personal favorite), David Strathairn, Hal Holbrook, Bruce McGill, Jared Harris and many more, together are just as much the star of the film as Honest Abe himself. In fact, Lincoln is barely present in the film’s climactic scene; it’s left to the rest of these supporters to carry it. And it is the most important scene in the movie, so the role of these supporters should not be underestimated. “Lincoln” is an excellent Oscar-season film, and Daniel Day-Lewis will be a sure favorite to win the Best Actor Oscar once again. His performance carries the film, and despite some muddled focus throughout the movie, Spielberg, Day-Lewis and the massive supporting cast make the film a worthy one to see in the theaters.

The Majority Speaks For Gateway
To the Whatcom County supporters of the Gateway Pacific Terminal: great show last week!
This strong support is not surprising. Polling shows about 60% of Whatcom residents support Gateway.
On Tuesday, we delivered to County officials more than 10,000 signatures on petitions supporting the Gateway Pacific Terminal – overwhelmingly by local residents, signed in person.
We are the majority and our voices are being heard. Let’s keep speaking!
On Thursday, more than 600 of us came to the scoping hearing in Ferndale to express our belief that, like the other industries at Cherry Point, Gateway will be another great neighbor meeting our state’s high environmental standards while delivering vital new family-wage jobs and tax revenues.

Ferndale winter sports teams in action Girls basketball and boys wrestling start off hot, while boys hoops falls to Lynden Chr. By Dan Balmer balmer.dan@gmail.com
FERNDALE — When the Ferndale girls’ basketball team ran onto the court on opening night in front of the home crowd, they meant business. Ferndale scored the first 14 points of the game and never looked back, defeating the Squalicum Storm 69-25 Friday, Nov. 30. Sophomore Linsey Honeycutt led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, while junior Hannah Carlson added 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. From the opening tip, the Golden Eagles set the tone early with a full-court trap defense that stymied the Storm players from advancing the ball past midcourt. Ferndale forced 30 Squalicum turnovers in the game. Senior guard Taylor Reid had three steals in the first quarter alone. Reid scored six points and dished out six assists for the Golden Eagles. Ferndale head coach Mike Ivy said his team was effective in forcing turnovers and driving into the lane on the fast break. “That’s what we like to do,” he said. “We got a lot of steals, pushed the basketball and got some easy buckets.” Ferndale led 21-4 after the first quarter. Senior Koral Weidkamp, Honeycutt and Carlson each scored four points in the first. Squalicum settled into the game in the second quarter, outscoring Ferndale 14-12, but still trailed 33-18 at halftime. Ivy said Squalicum responded well in the second quarter, but his team shut the door on a comeback in the second half. The Storm scored just
7 points across the final two quarters, while Ferndale had double-digit scoring in every quarter. Ferndale went on a 24-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to increase the lead from 41-22 to 65-22 with 3:29 left to play. Reid controlled the game with an up-tempo pace down the court with many 2-on-1 breaks that led to easy layups for Ferndale. “Our passes into the post went extremely well,” Ivy said. “Reid did a great job of distributing the ball and Hannah took over there for a while.” During that scoring stretch, Carlson scored seven points. Junior Taryn Knutson hit a three-pointer to give Ferndale a 50-22 lead at the end of the third quarter. The younger Knutson finished the game with nine points while senior Taylor Knutson scored four points playing only sparingly because of foul trouble. The junior varsity squad had similar results as the varsity team. Ferndale beat Squalicum 77-30 behind strong efforts from sophomores Abby Reid and Carly Bannerman. Reid, the younger sister of Taylor, came off the bench and scored the last two points in the varsity game. Bannerman’s older sister Kelli, also scored two points for varsity. Ferndale hosted Lynden Christian Tuesday night. Late score: The Golden Eagle girls won, 56-49. With six seniors on this year’s Golden Eagles squad, Ferndale has one of the more experienced girls’ basketball teams in the Northwest Conference. Ferndale plays host to Blaine Friday at 7:15 p.m. Boys give up second-half run, lose to LC LYNDEN — For the second time in as many games, the Ferndale boys’ basketball team’s struggles in the third quarter cost them the game. Ferndale went into the half with a 26-25 lead on the road against the defending 1A state champion Lynden Christian
Lyncs Monday night. The second half was a different story as the Lyncs pounced on the Golden Eagles. LC outscored Ferndale 23-6 and took a 48-32 lead into the fourth quarter. Issac Reimer and Daulton Hommes both scored 15 points for LC in the victory. Junior Lukas Melton and freshman Austin Honeycutt each scored 10 points to pace Ferndale. Senior Kendall Kelly added nine points for the second straight game. On Friday night, Ferndale lost to Squalicum 61-47 on the road. Both teams were tied at 18 after the first quarter, but by the end of the third quarter, the Storm had built a 50-33 lead. Freshman post Honeycutt scored 22 points to lead the Golden Eagles. Honeycutt, brother of girls’ sophomore post player Linsey Honeycutt, has started all three games for Ferndale and has definitely emerged as an inside scoring threat for the Golden Eagles. Kelly scored all his points Monday on three 3-pointers. The senior captain made a statement with 34 points in Ferndale’s dramatic 69-67 win over Bellingham on Nov. 27. Kelly sank nine 3-pointers in that game, capped off with the game-winner on a four-point play with 30 seconds left. Ferndale trailed by six points with just more than a minute remaining before Melton and Zack Berkompas scored to bring the Golden Eagles within two before Kelly’s heroics. The Golden Eagles might have found their perimeter and post scorers. In three games this season, Kelly leads Ferndale with 17.3 points per game and already has made 12 treys. Honeycutt has scored 40 points in three games, with a majority of them put in near the basket. Ferndale is now 1-2 on the young season with the next game at Blaine Friday night at 7:15 p.m. Ferndale wrestlers take

Getting to know an Olympic athlete: Donn Cabral American steeplechaser at Ferndale YMCA today at 4 p.m. By Dan Balmer balmer.dan@gmail.com
FERNDALE — Donn Cabral, a participant in the 2012 London Summer Olympics in the steeplechase, will be at the Ferndale YMCA today at 4 p.m. to sign autographs and have pictures taken. The event is free and open to the public. Cabral, a Princeton graduate and native of Glastonbury, Connecticut, recently moved to Bellingham following his eighth-place finish in the Steeplechase at the London Olympics in August. Ferndale YMCA youth sports coordinator Stacey Noble said she received an email asking her if she would be interested in having an Olympian come to her YMCA. “I am absolutely interested in hosting an Olympian,” Noble said. “To have our youth exposed to such excellence would be a chance of a lifetime. The dedication, perseverance and sacrifice are attributes that we at the YMCA want all children
to see as rewarding and empowering.” The Ferndale Record recently spoke with Cabral via email on his Olympic experience and how life has changed since competing on the world’s stage. Ferndale Record: I saw that you recently ran in the Manchester Road Race on Thanksgiving back in your hometown area in Connecticut. What did you enjoy about that race and what has it been like being back home since the London Olympics? Donn Cabral: Yep, fortunately for me one of the best races of the fall is about five miles from my parents’ house and on Thanksgiving morning. Going back to Connecticut to race Manchester is an awesome experience. Personally, I was a huge hometown favorite. There were newspaper articles about my race and spectators throughout the entire course knew who I was. It made every part of the race, even the final 100 uphill meters, fun. Since I made the Olympics, spending time back in Glastonbury is surreal. The recognition throughout the town is amazing and when I’d speak at my old schools I’d be mobbed with the younger grades asking me to sign binders, shoes and even foreheads while the Facebook-
using grades just ask to take pictures with me. I find my luxuriously flexible schedule quickly becoming airtight. All while trying to train like an Olympian. Even though I usually find myself with a level of stress and my training usually falls short of what I’d like, I’m always happy to be home. FR: What was the moment when you knew you qualified for the Olympics? Give me an idea of how much work and preparation you put into the steeplechase event and how satisfied were you when your dream became a reality? DC: When I landed clear of the final water barrier at the Olympic Trials, I don’t think I thought about all my hours of sacrifice, or all of the miles I put it, or any of the things in the past that were suddenly clearly worth it. I just thought about what was to come: walking onto the track in my first Olympics, traveling with Team USA, wearing the USA red and, most significantly, being able to add the suffix “Olympian” to my name like M.D. How satisfied was I? Well, it’s not every day — or even every decade — that I get to check off a lifelong goal from my list. FR: At Princeton, you dominated the Ivy League distance running circuit with NCAA re-
cords and a national championship in the steeplechase just this summer. How were you able to have so much success in college and how were you able to balance your sport with your academic studies? DC: All the success I’ve ever had has been due to the people I am supported by. In high school, my mom used to wake me up when I’d sleep through my alarm without fail and have a recovery-focused breakfast laid out for me and a healthy lunch packed up by the time I finished my morning five-miler. In college, my teammates and my college coach were always understanding and encouraging regarding my lofty goals and my pretty rigid lifestyle. Without them I wouldn’t have known how to do the finer aspects of training, enjoy “the journey” to meet my goal, or even manage my schoolwork. Since I first entered the sport as a freshman in high school, the biggest motivator has always been Pete, my high school coach in Connecticut and now my professional coach in Bellingham. FR: When did you first start running the steeplechase event? What drew you to this unique obstacle race, which includes barriers and a water
jump? DC: I began steepling, as we call it for short, my sophomore year at Princeton when my college coach suggested it to me, citing my physical resilience, coordination and mental toughness as reasons why I’d excel in it. I gave it my best shot, ran alright, hated it, and told him I was through with the event. He eventually convinced me to do it once more at the Penn Relays, one of the most prestigious races in the country. I won the race, felt great doing it and fell in love with the event. FR: What was your experience like at the London Olympics? Were you able to meet a lot of the world’s best athletes in your sport? DC: I’m always asked if I met Phelps or Kobe, but the people that I was most excited to meet were the people in my sport whom I’ve idolized since I first became a runner. People like Bernard Lagat, the multiple time world and Olympic medalist whose poster I have in my room, were now my teammates. And everywhere I looked there was evidence I had risen to a new level. FR: Now you are a professional runner signed by Nike with your sights set for the Rio Summer Olympics in 2016.
Why did you decide to move to Bellingham? DC: As I mentioned before, my biggest motivator was my former coach, Pete Oviatt. This summer I started thinking about my plans for getting back into training for the next Olympics and I got really excited about the idea of getting back under Pete’s tutelage since I’ve got all the confidence in the world he’s got the knowledge to develop my talents and the motivational skills to keep me hungry for a medal. Pete had moved to Bellingham in 2007 and raved to me about how perfect it is for training for five years, so I figured it was time to come see for myself! FR: What advice do you have for kids who aspire to be the best at their sport and who are striving to compete in the Olympics? DC: What might be a weakness of yours now isn’t necessarily a permanent trait. If you put in the work in any aspect of your life, you’ll see gradual improvements. Keep improving gradually and eventually it might bring you to the Olympics or whatever your dream is. It has taken me about 160,000 hours of training to get to where I am now and I don’t intend on slowing down. So stick to it!
