FERNDALE — Downtown Ferndale business owners are breathing a sigh of relief after a notorious burglar was apparently caught red-handed over the weekend. However, work for the Ferndale Police Department is just beginning when it comes to helping educate businesses on avoiding becoming targets of a break-in. Perhaps the hardest lesson in the whole rash of mischief, which began on Nov. 8, was how a single person allegedly broke so many windows for so little cash on hand. FERNDALE — The Ferndale Holiday Giving Store is preparing for its holiday season by seeking cash donations as well as donations of new, unwrapped gifts. The store will be open from Thursday, Dec. 13, through Saturday, Dec. 15. Since 2003, the Ferndale Community Service Cooperative’s Holiday Giving Store has provided gifts
for low-income families during the holidays. Last year, more than 700 Ferndale children received gifts through the store. Warm clothing, preferably hooded sweatshirts, for children and teens in sizes up through extra large are especially needed this year. Teen items, sports equipment and makeup kits are just a few of the suggested items for donation. Julianna Kindlund-Carpenter, a founder of store under service coop umbrella, said the biggest hole right now is toys for children ages 6-12 and gifts for teens. Other donation suggestions are crafts and games. Gifts may be deposited in col-

Spree Continued from 1A undercover officer in the department arrested Ryan Scott Cockerel, 25, as he was attempting to break into a business in the 2000 block of Main Street early Sunday morning.    Cockerel, who resides in the 2300 block of Main, quickly confessed to the rest of the burglaries in the area, police said.    In most cases, the violated businesses noticed that the burglar passed over valuable items in favor of the cash register.    “It’s unknown what his future plans might have been,� Knapp said, “but he was going at a pretty good pace, covering a pretty wide area.�   Knapp said the arrest demonstrated several things: first, a fine job by Ferndale officers in resolving the spree; second, that resources and help from other agencies in the area can help make a difference. Knapp declined to share what specific shared
resources led to Cockerel’s arrest, however.    “It’s important that the community understands that we don’t just bring our assets to issues like this,� Knapp said. “We can also call upon larger assets. We just want people to see that relationship.�    When Cockerel was arrested, he had apparently already broken into two other locations overnight, Knapp said.    In response to the spree, Philip Petrasek, police community services coordinator, is organizing an awareness campaign for local business, starting with a presentation at the next Ferndale Chamber of Commerce membership lun-

cent pledge of up to $1 million in matching funds, that grant will actually send $1 million to the project.    That means the new Ferndale Library is just $540,000 away from its $5.4 million goal.    The grant, awarded by the Community Economic Revitalization Board, is a great fit for the project, said Norine Amend, president of the Friends of the Ferndale Library.    Amend noted that the library should be viewed as a

FERNDALE — A Ferndale property tops an updated list of possible sites for a new Whatcom County Jail, according to Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo.   Ferndale Mayor Gary Jensen said he began corresponding with Elfo as soon as it appeared the city had top billing in the process.    The 40-acre parcel, on LaBounty Drive near Sunset Avenue, is currently the site getting the most attention after a jail planning committee received seven proposals meeting its described criteria.    Jensen said that while he understands the need for a new jail and the attractiveness of the LaBounty site, he’s not
exactly excited about the plan. That’s partly because he feels for those who have lived in the area for years and have dealt with rising industrial development already.    On the other hand, Jensen also noted that beyond the initial build, a jail on that site means no revenue generation from sales tax by an operating business.   The property is currently owned by Janicki Industries, based in Skagit County.    Jensen also shared a letter he has already received from a resident in the area.    Elfo said that he and those tasked with examining the property in depth will keep the process extremely transparent. That means there will likely be meetings specifically for affected residents, as well as meetings for the broader community.    In fact, Elfo said, he has already spoken to some Ferndale residents with concerns, such as where prisoners

FERNDALE — The race for the title of Best Burger in Ferndale just got a little bit more interesting. That’s because on Monday, Dec. 3, Matt Trott began selling the Good Burger within the city limits. For five years, Trott has been running his restaurant out of a leased space on the Guide Meridian in Laurel. But when his lease recently expired, he saw an opportunity to own his own spot on Third Avenue in Ferndale. Owning his own place was his goal. And the small former home of Siam Cafe was just the ticket. “I’ve been looking to move here a long time,” Trott said. “We’ve gotten a warm reception so far.” Trott noted that his old regulars didn’t miss a beat. From his very first day, many of them came out and supported him. That’s when he realized that some of them lived in Ferndale anyway. Even better, he’s already noticed plenty of other peo-
ple getting introduced to his offerings. The main burger options, rated in order of their popularity by Trott, are the original Good Burger, the Bacon Burger and Mushroom Swiss. However, there are plenty more to consider and taste — The Fair, Guacamole Bacon, Hawaiian and Barbecue. There’s even sandwiches to consider, such as the Patty Melt, Reuben, Grilled Ham and Cheese and the original Grilled Cheese. But it’s not just the options on the menu that draw most people to Trott’s food. It’s more likely the fact that he insists on grinding his beef fresh every day. For good measure, he also cuts his own french fries — no frozen patties and precut spuds around here. Trott admits he’s a bit particular about his food. After all, it’s something he grew up around. Trott’s grandfather was the original owner of Lee’s Drive-In in Bellingham before his uncle took over. When working with his uncle as a teen, Trott said, he sometimes butted heads, with the end result being the same: “He’d tell me, ‘When you have your own restau-

cial fisherman. However, his ideas about food just never went away. And the Laurel restaurant was the result of his restlessness. Trott noted that his menu, while flexible, doesn’t stray far from the basics of
what people expect from a burger meal. His focus on burgers is so acute that he once tried to discontinue his hard ice cream milkshakes. That didn’t go over well. They were soon back on the menu by popular demand.
“People really want their burger, fries and milkshake,” Trott said. Good Burger is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 9 p.m.

Verdict from voters: A higher threshold for taxes By Chris Cargill Washington Policy Center Can you hear us now? That’s the question Washington voters are asking lawmakers following passage — for the fifth time — of a supermajority requirement to raise taxes. It’s a reasonable and popular tax policy in our state, and now is the time to take it local. A higher threshold to raise taxes makes increasing taxes a true last resort. Newspaper editorial boards across the state, including that of The Spokesman-Review, concluded a supermajority requirement keeps lawmakers focused on efficiencies. “It’s forced lawmakers from both major political parties to fully debate the merits and compromise,” proclaimed the Walla Walla UnionBulletin. The evidence is clear. In 2010, when given the chance, Washington lawmakers jumped at passing more than $6.7 billion in tax increases over ten years after they suspended
the supermajority requirement. Months later, voters repealed some of those new taxes. The supermajority requirement is popular throughout Washington. It passed in all 39 counties, even in more-liberal King County. In Spokane County it received 70 percent support, and in the City of Spokane it was nearly unanimous among precincts. It is unlikely that voters differentiate this policy preference between state and local. This is why citizens in Spokane should have the opportunity to adopt a higher threshold for taxes in the city. A charter change would be simple; all new taxes or tax increases in the City of Spokane would require five votes on the City Council for approval, instead of the current four out of seven members. Pierce County residents just approved a charter change that did exactly that with an overwhelming 67 percent of the vote. It now takes five votes to pass a county tax
increase there. Opponents will argue that a supermajority requirement to raise taxes is undemocratic. They ignore the fact there are more than 20 other supermajority provisions in the state constitution and a number of five-vote requirements in the City of Spokane. In late November, Spokane’s City Council nearly adopted a 1 percent hike in property taxes just weeks after approving a generous benefit package for the city’s firefighters. It failed by just one vote. One council member proclaimed taking the 1 percent hike was no different than what has been done in previous years. And that is exactly the problem. When governments operate on autopilot, citizens are left holding the bag. Had a five-vote requirement been in place, consensus would have been required and previous 1 percent hikes would not have passed without a larger discussion about the growing financial burden
on taxpayers. In October, consensus among council members was reached and the city’s hotel tax went up to pay for expansion of the Spokane Convention Center and Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. That vote was 6-1. As the legislature heads into its next session facing a $900 million shortfall, despite a $1.5 billion increase in tax revenue, lawmakers will be eager to hand off costs
to local governments. A charter change in Spokane and other cities to require a higher threshold for tax increases will give local taxpayers the opportunity to avoid getting stuck with the bill. Voters continue to make the call. They should be given the chance to adopt the reasonable supermajority policy at the local level.

Letters GPT supporters misguided The Ferndale Scoping meeting on 11/29 was a circus, orchestrated by Gateway Pacific Terminal (GPT) proponents who paid their allies to come early and get the lion’s share of speaking spots. Is this what they mean when they say ‘Good Jobs Now’? It is universally documented that coal is a toxic fossil fuel, harmful to the earth’s environment when mined, transported and then burned for fuel. The sabotage may have been an effort to avoid exposing the fate of Ferndale’s water supply, which had always come from the Nooksack River. In December 2011, the PUD contracted with Pacific International Terminals to allow use of 5.3 million gallons of Nooksack River water per day, which is more than Ferndale uses in one day! Ferndale residents now have to rely on groundwater. As snowfalls decline and glaciers recede due to climate change from burning fossil fuels, the Nooksack River may diminish. Government Ericksen will co-lead committee in state Senate ‘Majority Coalition Caucus’ OLYMPIA — Sen. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, has been chosen co-chair of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee for the 2013 legislative session, which opens Jan. 14. Ericksen says he will be a part of a new bipartisan group known as the “Majority Coalition Caucus” in setting operating rules for the 2013 legislative session. Democrats outnumber Republicans, 26-23, in the Senate, but two Democrats, Tim Sheldon and Rodney Tom, part ways with their leadership on some issues. That has left leadership to be forged across party lines. “This is an unprecedented opportunity to change the way Olympia operates,” Ericksen said in a press release. “We’re going to be judging ideas based on their merit, rather than the political party they’re associated with. That’s important because the best solutions don’t come with an ‘R’ or ‘D’ next to them; they’re a product of everyone listening to each other and working together. “My legislative priorities will remain the same as they’ve always been — forcing government to live within its means and creating a sustainable budget based on the priorities of our state. “I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few months talking to people in Whatcom County and across Washington state about what they want from their government. Enchilada Pie What You Need • 2 onions • 3 green & red peppers • 1-28 oz. can crushed tomatoes • garlic • 2 lbs. beef
• 1 T. red wine vinegar • 2 t. cumin • 1 t. oregano • 6 flour tortillas • 3 oz. cheddar cheese • 3 oz. monterey jack cheese
Directions Slice onions & peppers. Mince garlic. Drain tomatoes. Cook beef - drain. Add onions, peppers, garlic, salt and pepper. Cook till soft. Remove and return meat. Add tomato, vinegar, cumin, oregano. Simmer 10 min. PreHeat Oven to 350˚ Grate cheeses. Line bottom & sides of 2 qt. dish with 4 tortillas. Layer 1/2 meat-top with onion mixture. Windward students keep active outside school walls WHS also partners with WWU students for practicum instruction course By Brent Lindquist reporter@lyndentribune.com
FERNDALE — There’s a lot happening at Windward High School these days, although much of it is not contained within the school’s walls. “It’s going well,” WHS Principal Tim Keigley said. “Things

We’ve got lots of good things going on.” Windward students just recently finished a food drive and a coffee fundraiser, complete with student-designed coffee labels and coffee from Hammerhead Coffee, located right across the street from the school. One of the school’s biggest projects is the biennual community service day, which took place in November. WHS students traveled in groups to eight different service learning locations: Head Start, the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, the Ferndale Boys & Girls Club, the Whimps Mountain Bike Coalition, Whatcom County Search and Rescue, the Whatcom Road Department, the Ferndale Community Camp and Conference Center, and Community Gardens. Windward’s ongoing partnership with Western Washing-
ton University is another project, this one benefiting both schools. “We just finished our second fall quarter with 16 Western Practicum students that were on our campus twice per week, so that went well. Western worked with us to develop a cohort program for their practicum teachers, which is a step before they student teach. They actually teach a graduate-level methods course on our campus twice a week. And then the practicum teachers work with our teachers in the classroom and teach lessons together. Each of those students has to put a minimum of 30 hours in in the quarter.” Keigley said this program is a huge benefit to Windward, as it puts talented staff on campus on a regular basis. The school as a whole has seen a slight increase in enrollment this year. “Our enrollment is pretty steady,” Keigley said. “Right now, we have about 170 students. We have about 14 to 15 full-time Running Start students and about 25 students altogether that are doing Running Start at least part-time or more. In terms of full-time students on campus, we have around 150. It’s about the same as last year. Our enrollment’s gone up a little bit from last year, maybe like 5 percent.” This is the second year at Windward’s North Bellingham Elementary School campus, and Keigley said their portion of the school has already seen some improvements. “The campus is looking better than it was the year before,” Keigley said. “The district had a good portion of the school painted over the summer. We took down the fence around the condemned area, which is still condemned, but at least we don’t have a fence around it.” Navigate to www.Ferndale. Northwest Indian Coll. receives $1.5 million for campus expansion
LUMMI — Northwest Indian College has undergone some major growth over the past eight years. On its main campus at Lummi alone, six new buildings have been built and another is nearly complete. Until recently, though, construction on two buildings was stalled. NWIC still needed to secure more than $1 million before building could proceed. This fall, the college got the funds it needed when
the Lummi Indian Business Council voted to approve a $1.5 million contribution for construction of a new Library/Technology building and for a Coast Salish Institute building. “These two buildings are first-class facilities and I believe our students deserve the best, including the best facilities and resources,” college President Justin Guillory said. “I want our students to feel proud about being here, to feel good about being
on campus, and I believe these buildings will help us provide that.” The Coast Salish Institute is more than just a building, Guillory said. It is a place that will help to preserve and revitalize Coast Salish culture by serving as a dedicated space where tribal language, history and culture will be taught. “It represents who we are as a tribal college,” he said.

Ferndale Wrestling: Battle tested Engels, Alexander capture tournament titles at Battle at the Border Saturday By Dan Balmer balmer.dan@gmail.com
BLAINE — The Lynden Lions may be state football champions, but when it comes to wrestling, Ferndale Golden Eagle supporters now have the bragging rights over their county rival. Ferndale senior Erik Engels’ pin of Lynden’s Ryan Meggison in the first round of the 170-pound final preceded a dramatic overtime decision for his best friend, Sam Alexander, who won the 195-pound class title at the Battle at the Border Saturday. “I learned that wrestling with better guys makes you better,” Engels said, referring to the countless hours he has trained with Alexander. “As someone once said, as iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another. By wrestling with my best friend, we have made each other better.” In the grueling two-day, 23-team tournament, Ferndale placed fifth as a team, compiling 42 wins to 30 losses for 138 points. Mount Baker scored 168 points for fourth place behind Blaine, which took third with 217.5. Lynden scored 65 points. Kentwood placed first with 234 points, while Todd Beamer scored 225 points to finish second. Ferndale sophomore Charnjit Mattu had an impressive showing at 182 pounds with two pins on Saturday. He finished sixth. After going undefeated in their respective weight classes to reach the finals, Engels and Alexander both wrestled their finals matches at the same time across from each other. Engels took care of Meggison midway through the
first round when he executed a throw, headlocked his opponent and pinned him for the win. When the whistle sounded, Engels threw both of his arms in the air and yelled out to the large crowd watching. “I hit a throw I have never hit before,” Engels said. “My mentality was to give it my best shot, I have nothing to lose.” Ferndale fans’ attention then quickly turned to the back right corner of the Blaine gym as Alexander battled his personal rival, Tyrel Cronk from Mount Baker, for the 195 title. In his previous matches against Cronk, Alexander had never defeated him. Cronk came into the tournament ranked no. 1 in state at 195; he won his first three matches via pin on Friday. Alexander took control of the match early with two takedowns and had a 5-2 lead in the second round before Cronk fought back in the third round. Tied at 5, Alexander scored an escape and takedown to go up 8-5 with less than a minute remaining in the deciding round. But in the final seconds, Cronk pulled out an escape and takedown to score three points to force overtime. “I felt I controlled position most of the time, something I strive to do every match,” Alexander said. “I made one mistake in the last six seconds and allowed it to go to overtime.” Alexander opted to start with controlling position and wasted no time pushing his opponent near the out-of-bounds circle and dropped Cronk to the mat while dragging his feet in the circle to score the decisive takedown. Engels said that while it was painful to watch Alexander give up those points late, it was just as exhilarating to see him drag his feet for the winning takedown. “It was amazing,” Engels said. “I don’t know if he saw my match and just felt

For both of us to win our first titles together at the same time is awesome.” Alexander, who advanced to his first tournament final after pinning Allen Tisinger of Anacortes in the semi-final, said winning a title gives him a boost. “I realized I’m a lot better wrestler than I give myself credit for,” Alexander said. “It’s nice to get that win in a critical situation.” Ferndale wrestling coach Caleb Schlack said both Engels and Alexander fought smart in every match and capitalized on the mistakes made by their opponent. “Sam had lost to that kid twice before, so it’s nice for him to get the monkey off his back,” Schlack said. “Not to mention this is the first time he has gone to the finals in a tournament and that’s huge especially since he went to state last year.” After Alexander’s victory, the final match on Saturday captivated everyone
with an impressive display of strength, determination and will between heavyweights Titi Lamositele of Sehome and Blaine’s Mikey Antczak. Theirs was the last bout to finish and everyone in the gym crowded around to see the pair battle nearly nine minutes of overtime before Lamossitele scored an escape to claim the heavyweight title. Everett’s Jesse Lopez, the 138-pound champion, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler, with three pins and two decisions. Schlack said Ferndale could have had three champions if fellow senior Kam Williams been able to compete in the tournament. Williams sustained a concussion during warmups prior to a 36-30 loss to Squalicum on Dec 5. Schlack said he was going to bump Williams up to the heavyweight class in hopes of getting a pin, but had to substitute freshman Chris Hernandez, who got beat.
Following the disappointing result against Squalicum, Schlack said he was unsure what the carryover of his team would be heading into the tournament, but thought his younger wrestlers rose to the occasion. “I think for a lot of our freshmen (the tournament) opened their eyes so they understand what it takes to be a great wrestler,” Schlack said. “I’m very happy with how they wrestled. We are preaching be aggressive and never quit and it is great to see out of our young kids.” Hernandez won his first match Friday and won on a pin Saturday. Freshmen Cory Slaughter, Taylor Bellefeuille and Sam Cleary all picked up their first varsity wins over the weekend. Senior Riley Saenz won his first match at 152 pounds before losing his second and dropping into the consolation bracket. Saenz won two more matches before losing 7-0 to Jordan Colombo of Rochester. Sophomore
Miguel Mungarro held on for a 5-4 decision over Lynden’s Christian Mouat at 152 before being eliminated by Colombo 10-0. Engels also won the opening season Mariner Tournament in Everett, but he said that win cannot compare to the grand stage at the Battle at the Border. In the previous 170 final, Engels faced off against a junior varsity teammate and the two thumb-wrestled for the win. At the Battle at the Border, Engels pinned four opponents in his bracket, including Everett’s Anthony Hawkins in the third round of the semi-final match. Engels does not have long to savor his victory over Meggison, however. Ferndale hosts Lynden today at 7 p.m. and Engels and Meggison will be pitted against each other again. He said he is ready for the rematch. Engels is organizing a food drive for his senior project at the wrestling meet. Admission is four cans of food.

BLAINE — While the Battle at the Border wrestling tournament consumed Blaine High School’s newer spacious gymnasium, the boys’ basketball game between Ferndale and Blaine was moved inside the older Ken Waters gym Friday night. Playing in a gym similar to their own home court, the Golden Eagles made themselves right at home building a 19-6 lead on the Borderites by the end of the first quarter. In the end, Ferndale was able to come away with its second win on the season, a 64-53 victory over Blaine. Senior forward Kendall Kelly capped the first-quarter dominance with one of his three treys. with 17 points. “Everybody played as hard as they could, on both offense and defense,” Kelly said. “It seemed to come naturally for everyone.”

While Blaine’s defense concentrated effort to double-team sophomore post Linsey Honeycutt and limit her inside scoring to just six points, the Borderites had no answer for Koral Weidkamp, who scored a career-high 16 points for the Golden Eagles. Ferndale took control early and built a 19-7 lead in the first quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game. Ferndale senior guard Taylor Reid scored 13 points and dished out five assists, while junior Hannah Carlson added seven points. Ferndale played against Anacortes Tuesday night and won 57-41 to stay undefeated at 4-0. While it is early in the season, only Ferndale and Burlington-Edison have perfect records yet in the Northwest Conference. The girls’ next game is Friday night at Mount Baker at 7:15 p.m.

BELLINGHAM — Ever since my dad took my brother and me to the Langley (B.C.) Colossus theater to see Bryan Singer’s original “X-Men” back in 2000, I have longed for a new movie theater in Bellingham. I’ll never forget the first time I walked into the Colossus. The stadium seats hooked me in, and the ear-shattering sound quality was further proof that this type of theater was the way of the future. Now, 12 years later, What-

Henrietta Polinder Henrietta Polinder, a long-time resident of Lynden, went to be with her Savior on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Christian Health Care Center. She was 98. Henrietta was born on April 2, 1914, in Corsica, S.D. She married Albert J. Klein on Nov. 7, 1933, in South Dakota and they moved to Everson in 1943. After Albert’s death in 1980, Henrietta married Gerrit Polinder on March 19, 1982. Together they volunteered at the Red Cross helping many victims of disasters for 17 years. Henrietta and Gerrit cherished their time traveling many miles together in their motor home visiting friends and relatives across the United States. In addition to her work with the Red Cross, she volunteered at One-to-One
helping families fulfill basic needs. She worked at the Lynden Christian Rest Home until her retirement. Henrietta loved her family, friends, pastors and church family. She was a long-time standing member of First Christian Reformed Church of Lynden and its oldest member. Her smile and hugs were freely given to all, and she would play games with any willing participant. She is survived by her husband, Gerrit Polinder; daughters Hermina (Gus) Buma and Dorothy Kortlever; and son-in-law Eldon Peters. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 30 greatgrandchildren, 38 great-great grandchildren, and five greatgreat-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert J. Klein; her daughters, Josephine Klein and Josephine Peters; and her siblings, Bertha (John) Boss, Pete (Freida)
Muilenberg, Arie (Effie) Muilenberg, Marie (Pete) Sterk and Ray (Jenny) Muilenberg. Henrietta’s family deeply appreciates the love and care that she received at Lynden Christian Health Care Center for the last eight months. In 1963 Wayne and Rose settled in Port Angeles where they opened their first antiques store, “The Yankee Trader.” In 1973 they relocated to the Sumas / Everson area and re-opened the Yankee Trader, until retiring in 2000. Wayne enjoyed growing his hybrid tomatoes, attending to his rose gardens, playing dominoes, spending time with his family, playing his organ, discussing politics — he even ran for county commissioner in 1959 — and going on country drives, and well into his 80s you could often find him on his morning bike ride. But most of all, he loved his God and spending time with his darling wife, Rose. Wayne will be greatly missed. He was a jolly man who loved to laugh at his own jokes, a man of integrity, the family Rock who enjoyed life, spoke his mind, loved his
stylish “hats” and always had a one-liner for you. He was a proud man, but humble and always wanted people to “remember they were the most important person he knew.” Wayne leaves behind five children: Irene Gatzke of Florida, Romona Wilcox of Hawaii, Ann Bruce of Woodinville, Wayne Trefethen Jr. of Lynden and Joe Trefethen of Maple Falls; daughter-in-law Mary Trefethen of Lynden; sons-in-law Andre Gatzke of Florida and Will Bruce of Woodinville; along with 15 grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 10, in Nooksack Valley Assembly of God Church. Burial followed in Ten Mile Cemetery with U.S. Navy military honors. Barkley amenities just took a dramatic leap forward. (Brent Lindquist/Ferndale Record) com County has a theater like that to call its own. The Regal Barkley Village 16 IMAX & RPX opened its doors to the public Monday morning, giving moviegoers the chance to experience this new venue at discounted prices while supporting local charities such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County, the Bellingham Herald’s Extend-a-Hand and the Bellingham Food Bank. I toured the theater Monday morning and was extremely impressed with what I saw. Aesthetically, the place looks a lot like the newer Regal theaters I’ve been to in the Seattle area. It’s colorful, with lots of reds and warm colors. It has a large concession area, a small video arcade (which includes an oldschool “Ms Pac-Man” arcade
cabinet, much to my delight), and 16 screens of cinematic goodness. I usually don’t pay a lot of attention to the acronyms that follow these theaters’ names while looking at them on Fandango, but I did notice the letters “RPX” when I purchased my ticket for this week’s Thursday midnight showing of “The Hobbit.” I didn’t know what that meant until I visited the theater. First announced in 2010, the RPX (“Regal Premium Experience) concept essentially involves a larger screen, better sound and, perhaps best of all, luxurious, high-backed seats. “The Hobbit,” billed as the theater’s premiere movie, will be shown in the RPX theater. It’s like Regal’s own custom version
of an IMAX theater, with far more comfortable seats. Just as impressive as the theater’s seats is its location. It is just off Barkley Boulevard, near businesses such as Haggen and Scotty Brown’s. Specifically, there is a brand-new The Woods Coffee branch on the premises, fulfilling one of my theater wish list items: A nearby coffee shop. It would be difficult to fault a new theater in Bellingham, especially considering our current options. Bellis Fair, Sunset Square and Sehome have needed replacement for a long time now, and Regal obviously heard the call. Moviegoers in Bellingham should take joy in the fact that this new theater will be there to serve their movie needs for many years to come.

Wayne Trefethen Wayne Warren Trefethen, 91, of Everson, went home to his Heavenly Father to join his wife, Rose, on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, surrounded by his family. W a y n e was born to the late James and Christi Trefethen on May 27, 1921, in Dorrance, Kan. Wayne graduated with honors from Dodge City High School in 1941 and graduated from watch-making trade school in 1942. Wayne was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served his country in the South Pacific on the USS Wadleigh during World War II. He loved his country. Wayne married the love of his life, Rose Manna, in 1943. They shared a sideby-side love of 64 years in marriage and business until Rose’s passing in 2008. Wayne was a watch maker by trade, but his dream was to be an inventor. You could
