Best Overall Business: Haggen Grocery store involved with numerous community organizations By Brent Lindquist reporter@lyndentribune.com

FERNDALE — It’s been a solid 2012 for the Ferndale Haggen store.    “It’s been a great year,” store manager Dan Bowhay said. “It’s always so enjoyable to be a part of this community and all the things that go on here.”    Bowhay has managed the store for almost four years, but has worked for Haggen itself for 41 years. He began as a courtesy clerk under Rick Haggen in Bellingham, and grew up with the business.

“Ferndale is such a close-knit community that does so many events. I’ve worked in several towns, four Haggens. As I moved around. I’ve never seen a community like this anywhere,” Bowhay said. “Everyone is so caring and supportive of each other. They have so many community events and so many fundraising events for different causes that come up in the community.”    Haggen itself has done a great deal to support the community and its undertakings as well.    “Our primary focus is to be as supportive as we can be for schools and for families, so we get involved a lot with different events in all of the different elementary schools,” Bowhay said. “At the high school, we work with the leadership groups quite often. We advertise in their newspaper. We are happily involved in the Boys & Girls Club and their events because that supports families in the area, and then with all the different events that go on with Pioneer Park downtown there with the Heritage Association and the senior citizen groups, with Hovander Park and the events that go on out there, the Street Fair. We try to be as supportive as we can be.”   Bowhay said change in the grocery industry can be hard to spot, but there is always change to be seen, large or small.   “It doesn’t seem like there are many changes year

to year in the food industry,” he said. “ But I can remember back when we didn’t even carry bottled water. Now we have 27 feet of it. We’ll be doing some revamping of some of our sections to expand. We have gluten-free products, which is probably one of the hottest trends in the grocery industry. We’re just trying to make sure we have the best quality products that we have and give the best customer service for our customers and continue to grow and serve the Ferndale community.”    The store offers a vari-

ety of services along with the essential grocery offerings. These services include an ATM, Banner Bank, Chef Express, dry cleaning, DVDXpress, Full Service Floral, Garden Shop, a gluten-free section, Hissho Sushi, an in-store bakery, the Market Street Café, Market Street Catering, Orient Express, parcel pickup, a pharmacy, self checkout, a Starbucks and a wine specialist.    The Ferndale Haggen is open 24 hours a day, and is located at 1815 Main St.

Best Small Business: Scrap-It Two-yearold business expanding into other recycling markets By Brent Lindquist reporter@lyndentribune.com

FERNDALE — Brian Parberry has worked in the recycling business since way back in the 1960s, when he began working in his father’s scrapyard.    What began as a small recycling buyback center has grown into Scrap-It, Bellingham’s largest recycling center.   Scrap-it officially opened under Parberry Environmental Solutions Inc., in conjunction with the storage business Stow-It in 2010.    “I just figured that the community needed an indoor scrapyard,” Parberry said. “Instead of battling against the elements all the time, like, if you imagine draining a car outside on a day like today,” he said in dreary December weather.    In the two years since Scrap-It opened, the company has recycled about 6,000 vehicles, from Volkswagens to BMWs and Mercedes to semi trucks.   “Then we’ll also do heavy equipment, farming equipment, logging equipment, front-end motorcycles, big iron — we do it all,” Parberry said.   Parberry said people don’t often realize the benefit of scrap businesses like

his until they realize just how much scrap they have.    “Some people just leave it laying around,” he said. “’I’m going to build something out of that,’ they say. It just sits around and finally, boom, it goes to scrap and they get rid of it.”    Scrap-It’s services extend much further than North Whatcom County. The business provides scrap recycling to Bellingham, Ferndale, Whatcom County, Skagit County, Peninsula counties, San Juan Island and Island County, and more.   The company’s scrap metal recycling services include non-ferrous metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, insulated wires, lead, electric motors and transformers. Ferrous-metal services include heavy equipment, steel, iron, tin, car bodies and farm and logging scrap. Scrap-It also performs automotive, appliance, battery and electronic recycling services.    With 2013 almost here, Parberry said he is looking to expand the business into other realms of recycling. Sometime in 2013, the business will begin paper recycling in addition to metal.    Scrap-It is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The business’s phones are monitored 24 hours a day for emergency storage solutions.    Scrap-It is located at 1526 Slater Rd. in Ferndale.
