WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR OF FERNDALE Welcome and please come visit our city. Ferndale is a small city of a little more than 11,000 residents, a city where you can walk our downtown from the visitor center and find friendly neighbors who will still look you in the eye and offer a smile!
Give your pet a short break in our adjacent Vanderyacht Park where they can enjoy the off-leash dog park with river access. A disc golf course may extend your stay. At the southern end of the Riverwalk is historic Pioneer Park. Our costumed tour guides, dressed in period costumes are ready to show you our entire Pioneer Village, including a church, school and country store. Make sure to find the authentic “outdoor bathroom.”
A short walk along Main Street will bring you to our Centennial Riverwalk Park alongside the Nooksack River. You can enjoy a beautiful vista of nearby Mount Baker while the river rolls slowly by. Public rest rooms are available and on a warm day we encourage a dip in the fountain! Enjoy the artwork from national artist Lori Nozick entitled “Riverwalk Markers and Monoliths.” The artwork was created from materials excavated from this historic site and residents helped place those materials in the art.
On behalf of all citizens of the City of Ferndale, we sincerely look forward to seeing you!
Gary Jensen, Mayor of Ferndale
GREETINGS FROM THE CITY ADMINISTRATOR Welcome to our fair City. Whether you are looking to buy your next house or just visiting old friends, I hope you find your visit to Ferndale fun and entertaining. Being blessed to live in such a visual stunning location, a trip to Ferndale can include side trips to the top of Mount Baker or a kayak paddle in the Bay. There is something for everyone here in our corner of the Pacific Northwest. Ferndale itself boasts one of the truly hidden gems for historical buffs – Pioneer Park. Having the world’s largest collection of turn of the century cedar log cabins, Pioneer Park is a stroll back in history and is enjoyable for all ages. You can pretend you are a famous outlaw at our olde time jail, contemplate the

serenity of the Chapel or just stroll around the park to see how life in the early part of the 1900’s felt. During the summer months the park features docents who are eager to answer your questions regarding pioneer life but the park can be enjoyed all year long. Hopefully you are able to enjoy our city during the summer months when there are various festivals held downtown the biggest of which is the Old Settler’s Weekend but no matter the time of year, you can always find something to do in Ferndale. So, relax, slow down, and enjoy life – that is what it means to call Ferndale home.

AGRICULTURE & FARMING Ferndale is well-known for being “farm country,” and even amid the explosion of new home developments, Ferndale has maintained its long love of the land and farming. One of the advantages of living in or near Ferndale is the number of roadside fruit and vegetable stands and visitor-friendly farms. The Lummi Tribe are the natives to this area and found the climate to be moderate and the soil rich, and today’s farming connects our generation to past generations. Throughout Whatcom County there are 521 miles of fish habitat streams. In recent years farmers have enhanced these streams by planting Douglas fir seedlings and native plant vegetation. Dairy farming became popular around the 1900’s and by 1930 dairies averaged 40 acres and fewer than 40 cows. Currently, the average dairy is 250 acres with 300 cows. Whatcom County is the first in the nation in milk production per cow. Two Ferndale farms also raise and sell bison for meat.

berries harvested annually, and an estimated additional 400 acres in upcoming years.
Berries are a large part of local agriculture. Whatcom County grows approximately 84 percent of all the frozen raspberries in Washington, and 65 percent in the nation. Strawberries are grown and processed Raspberries and blueberries are picked by mechanical harvesters, and locally for national brands. There are more than 1500 acres of blue- strawberries are exclusively hand-picked. Berries are also sold along roadside stands throughout Ferndale and in many grocery stores. Photo by Michael Liang There are more than 100 acres of commercial orchards in Whatcom County and those orchards produce more than 1,110 tons of apples each year. Other crops include corn, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes and more. Christmas tree farms, tree farms for pulp and paper, and fresh flowers top off the leaders of local agriculture. The county leads the state of Washington in certified seed potatoes. These are used to plant commercial crops elsewhere. Jennie Pickens, Heather Bender and Elizabeth Hayes of Appel Farms, cutting and preparing a fresh order of locally made cheese . PUBLIC ART
Story Poles Story poles are important to Ferndale because of the Lummi Nation heritage and culture. Story poles have always been an important part of tribal life and the totems are an integral part of their personal identity. The story poles are carved from mature cedar trees. Unlike the mural tour, the story poles are spread out and you will need to drive to see the ones that are located outside of the downtown area.
1. At Moles Farewell Tributes, located at 2019 Main St.., James Jewell and his wife Ramona, carved this raven totem pole in remembrance of his mother and to honor Moles for their 60 years of service to the community. 2. At the corner of Main and Second streets, in front of the U.S. bank, is a towering totem pole featuring an eagle, canoe, beaver and more. 3. Centennial Riverwalk Park, along the Nooksack River. The first totem pole, “Log Jam,” the largest of the three, is a 26-feet tall Washington State Parks Commission donated Old Growth Fir. The two other totems, both 20-feet tall, were constructed out of U.S. Forest Service donated Western Red Cedars and share a two-part traditional coast Salish story of the convergence of man and salmon. Story poles to drive to: Other story poles can be found by going south on Lummi View Dr., past Gooseberry Point. Story poles are located throughout the reservation, but most of the larger ones can be found in front of Little Bear Creek at 2400 Lummi View Dr., the entrance to the Lummi community building, WEX-LI em, and inside the community building itself. To learn more about the Lummi Nation, story poles, celebrations, culture and more, visit the website: members.aol.com/ bkdonnclass/NWIndianlife.html.
Murals
Murals give downtown Ferndale a unique ambiance and range in theme from a Mexican cantina, farm land, pioneer scenes and more. To enjoy these scenes, park near the post office at the corner of Fourth and Main streets. Most murals are on the north side of the street.
1. View the mural painted on the side of the Ferndale post office. This mural includes a cigar shop, general store, post office, bakery and car. 2. Walk east on the north side of the street and visit the mural on the west side of Hot Dogz at 2954 Main Street. The mural depicts a porch and back yard scene, including clothes hanging on a clothesline and a tree. 3. Next to Hot Dogz is the continuation of the mural. This mural includes a barn, patriotic kite flying and more. 4. Continue walking east on Main Street and stop at 2038 Main Street. In the alley next to Babe’s Place is a mural of a mountainous region along with a farm scene. Also included is a gift store window, flowers, a church, pond and trees. 5. In the alley next to Las Cazuelas Restaurant at 2012 main St.., is a colorful mural of an authentic Mexican cantina. The artist found the picture in a magazine and adapted it to portray what the restaurant wanted. Continue through the alley to the City Hall Annex, where you will find the colorful mural designed by Ferndale and Lummi youth. 6. On the east side of the Ferndale Record building at 2008 Main St.., as seen when entering Ferndale’s downtown, is a mural depicting Pioneer Park and includes horses and Mount Baker in the background. 7. Under the railroad bridge on Main Street, Ferndale High School students painted this mural in 1995. Cosponsored by the Whatcom County Cruising Association, this is a creative look at old film legends.

EDUCATION Welcome to Ferndale Schools. We serve approximately 4,760 students, prekindergarten through high school, on 11 campuses. This year (2012-2013), our students learn at seven elementary schools (grades preK-6); two middle schools (grades 7-8); one large and one small high school (grades 9-12). At the recommendation of a community-based study group charged with determining the best use of our facilities and other instructional resources, 6th graders in Ferndale will be joining 7th and 8th graders at middle school beginning next year (2012-2013), a design that more closely aligns with state learning guidelines; and, with the reduction in enrollment caused by this move, the district’s seven elementary schools will be consolidated into six, thereby reducing overhead costs and freeing up more resources for instruction. In addition to its own schools, Ferndale maintains a partnership with the Lummi Nation School, which is operated by tribal leaders, serves approximately 300 students in grades K-12, and provides a strong cultural component along with its academic program. The learning of Ferndale students is facilitated by nearly 300 dedicated teachers and supported by a host of caring coaches, counselors, custodians, family & community coordinators, nurses, secretaries, para-educators, tutors, lunchroom workers, bus drivers, volunteers, principals, and school board members. Each of Ferndale’s elementary schools -- which range in size from Cascadia (with over 500 students) to tiny Beach School on Lummi Island (with fewer than 40 students) – has a strong academic core, a variety of music and art opportunities, an active parent group, and programs for students with unique learning needs. Because we recognize the critical value of early learning, we allocate a substantial portion of our precious (and scarce) resources to provide free full-day kindergarten for every child; and, with support from several grants, we are also working to enhance pre-school learning opportunities. Ferndale’s two middle schools offer personalized settings for young adolescents at a time when they are experiencing many physical, emotional, and intellectual transitions. In addition to regular academic coursework, programs for our middle level students include music, art, world language, an array of extracurricular athletic teams, and a number of extended learning activities like Student Council and Natural Helpers. Currently, an active Middle School Task Force made up of educators and parents is engaged in the process of reviewing, refining, and expanding middle level programs in preparation for inclusion of 6th graders in the fall of 2013. One exciting aspect of the middle school re-design is the plan to provide every middle school student with his or her own laptop or electronic tablet beginning next year. Ferndale High, Home of the Golden Eagles, is the largest high school in Whatcom County. Students at FHS have the opportunity to enroll in eight classes per semester -- two more than the traditional six – allowing them to take advantage of a rich and varied menu of course offerings. The high school schedule includes numerous advanced placement programs, several world languages, various honors and college preparatory classes, and a robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program aimed at preparing students for the current and future job market. Computer-assisted drafting (CAD), digital communications, business and marketing, welding, a range of highly regarded agriculture offerings, and an innovative power and energy program form the core of CTE at Ferndale High.

Ferndale schools are also well known for their award-winning music, art, and drama programs and the talented instructors who lead them. We regularly field excellent athletic teams and turn out superior athletes (like NFL quarterback Jake Locker and punter Michael Koenig) under the direction of skillful and caring coaches. Altogether, we provide a multi-faceted high school extracurricular program involving nearly 1,000 students per year. In addition to the comprehensive program at Ferndale High School, our district offers a small school option – called Windward -- for students who desire something other than the traditional high school setting. Hallmarks of the Windward program include an advisory program, focus on relationships and community-building, emphasis on service learning and leadership, high levels of parent involvement, an online coursework component for learners who need an personalized schedule, and multiple opportunities for students to exercise voice and choice. Ferndale students also benefit from the district’s proximity to four colleges: Bellingham Technical College, Whatcom Community College, Northwest Indian College, and Western Washington University. Through Running Start and more than a dozen articulation agreements, students can get a jumpstart on earning college credits while still in high school. Through the generosity of our community, many of our high school graduates receive scholarships every year to support their continued learning in colleges and universities. The Ferndale staff models lifelong learning for their students. All of our teachers are “highly qualified” according to federal and state guidelines. Over 70% of them have master’s degrees and 33 have earned National Board Certification. The Ferndale community supports its children in a variety of ways. Many individuals volunteer their time and expertise to assist student learning. The citizens as a whole have consistently voted for levies to fund school programs. In February of 2012, they passed a four-year school operations levy. In 2008, they passed a six-year technology levy to ensure students and staff members have access to up-to-date learning tools. In recognition of our technology planning process, Ferndale was recently selected as one of 20 visionary districts in the country striving to implement one-to-one technology to enhance learning based upon research-proven methodology. (To learn more about Project RED’s Signature District program, visit www.projectred.org.) The Ferndale school board is made up of five dedicated leaders who care deeply about children and their education, as evidenced by the five Strategic Commitments they have set to guide the work of the district, as well as by their being named by a 2012 “Board of Distinction” by the state’s school board association. Ferndale board members are committed to transparent governance and public engagement. To enhance the former, they have made all of their deliberations available through BoardDocs on our district website at www. ferndale.wednet.edu. To facilitate the latter, they have commissioned four ongoing community advisory committees (dealing with facilities, technology, diversity/multiculturalism, and communications) and a number of task forces that are open to public participation. More information about these groups is also available on the district website. The people of Ferndale are definitely the school district’s greatest resource, and the 4,800 children who attend our schools are the district’s most valuable treasure. Providing the highest quality education to every one of them is our mission and our passion. In Ferndale we say that “it’s a matter of pride.” If you have questions, or if you would like to arrange a tour of our schools, please contact our public information office at 360-383-9207. EDUCATION
Ferndale School Board has established five commitments to guide the work of our district Commitment to Honoring, Celebrating, and Embracing Our Diverse Community We understand that our public schools belong to our entire community, and our diversity makes us stronger. To capitalize on this strength, we are dedicated to energizing and integrating all aspects of our community in support of our children and their learning. Commitment to Equity and Equal Opportunity We believe our district cannot be truly excellent if it is not also equitable. In a democratic society built on values of fairness and justice, the concept of educational excellence must encompass not only high-quality educational opportunities for all students, but also high-level outcomes for all students.
Commitment to Enhancing Student Learning and Development We recognize that nurturing the development and maximizing the learning of all children entrusted to our care is our highest mission. Therefore, everything we do must be focused on achieving these ends.
School Board members also realized that each of our five commitments needs to be carried out with two critical ideas always in mind – Relationships and Results. They put these two ideas at the center of all of our work.
A focus on Relationships means we acknowledge the importance of the human dimension in everything we do. We are first and foremost a people business. HISTORY OF FERNDALE
By 1882,
Ferndale was the third largest town in Whatcom County and had two stores, a hotel, two saloons and a post office.
Archive photo courtesy Ferndale Record
Ferndale garners its roots from the Lummi Tribe who called the land “Te-tas-um,” which meant, “the crossing place above Lummi.” The native culture is still alive today as seen throughout Ferndale, with displays of Story poles, weaved baskets and more. Many from the Lummi Nation continue to fish and harvest shell fish just as their ancestors did generation after generation. The city of Ferndale was founded in the 1800’s with the name, “Jam.” This was in reference to the nearby two-mile log jam on the Nooksack River. Alice Eldridge, the first school teacher, was the first to call the town Ferndale. She admired the lush green ferns that surrounded the schoolhouse. This was characteristic of the Indian culture where names of sites and areas oftentimes described the site itself. As people moved to the area the name stuck. The first pioneer family to settle in Ferndale was a Texan named Billy Clark, and his Native American wife Cecilia Chanique. In 1873, they built a cabin near the Nooksack River and lived there for more than 10 years. Because Clark had to give up his citizenship in order to work for the Hudson Bay Company in Canada, he was not the first legal owner of any property in Ferndale. Darius Rogers, Clark’s old friend, filed claim to 174 acres. Along with his brother, Rogers opened the first business in Ferndale. This included a hotel and later a store. After a steamboat enterprise failed he moved to the west side of the river. The post office, which was a cedar log building that Rogers built, along with some residents and merchants, also moved to the west side. By 1882, Ferndale was the third largest town in Whatcom County and had two stores, a hotel, two saloons and a post office. 2014 Ferndale Community Profile & Membership Directory

Custer is located near Ferndale and has an elementary school, post office and several downtown businesses. Custer’s boundaries merge with Ferndale’s boundaries. Custer is a quaint area where farm land is prevalent. Originally, the town was located at the intersection of the current Valley View and Bay roads, but in 1890-1892 the town moved to accommodate the railroad. The railroad continues to run through the town today. Custer was named after its first postmaster, Albert W. Custer.
The Lummi Nation traditionally lived near the sea and in the mountain areas that surrounded Ferndale, and spoke the Salishan language. The tribe smoke-dried seafood, camas bulbs and sun-dried berries, and ate all species of shell fish, crab, salmon, trout, elk, deer and other land and sea mammals. They expressed their language, family heritage and religious traditions through their totem pole carvings. The reservation is a 5-mile long peninsula which is surrounded by Lummi Bay on the west, Bellingham Bay on the east, the smaller peninsula of Sandy Point, Portage Island and the associated tidelands. Interesting facts: Loretta Lynn once was a resident of Custer. Early in her career she began performing at Bob’s Tavern on Portal Way, north of Custer. According to the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce, Ferndale was once home to a company which sold UFO alarms. These alarms were devised to detect unidentified flying objects. The company went out of business.

Ferndale’s newest pride. Hemmed in between the Nooksack River, neighboring streets and Ferndale’s downtown district, this newly developed area offers a variety of cultural sights. Views of the Nooksack River along the river walk are splendid especially in autumn when the leaves are changing, or in the spring and summer when the flowers are in bloom. The plaza hosts a fountain, flag pole, year-round foliage, and a permanent art display chosen from local artwork. Story poles are also featured and bring the strong influence of Ferndale’s heritage of the Lummi Nation to the plaza. The plaza is located in downtown Ferndale on the west side of the bridge. Plan to spend time admiring the artwork, the sights and sounds, and then take a stroll down the river walk and enjoy views of the river, foliage, birds and sights of nature. 2014 Ferndale Community Profile and Membership Directory

Another fishing favorite is the Nooksack River, which is accessible at the boat launch area off Ferndale Road, at Hovander Homestead Park and Vanderyacht Park. No parking pass is required but a fishing license is strictly enforced.
Brennan Pond
Brennan Pond is a favorite for those who enjoy packing their gear through the woods and tall grassy areas from Slater Road to the water. Once there, it can be muddy and only room for a few fishermen at a time. Many locals choose this location for the challenge of the hike and the hopes of secluded fishing. Park in the small lot on the north side of Slater Road near the railroad tracks. Depending on the season, the path can be clearly defined or somewhat overgrown.
Tennant Lake
Tennant Lake is difficult to utilize as a fishing area due to the dense population of lily pads that fill the lake. A boat launch near Fragrance Garden will accommodate a small canoe or raft certain times of the year. Visitors are asked to respect the beavers, muskrats and other animals that make their home there.

The portion of this trail that runs through Ferndale, starts to the west on Douglas Road. Follow the road east on Douglas Drive to the city limits and then right on Main Street to downtown. First, follow the signs to the boat launch area, continuing on the path near the river that goes around the west side of Hovander Homestead Park. Continue to follow the river, passing Brennan Pond and exiting at the parking area on Slater road. An alternative route is to follow Nielsen Ave. south from Main Street, passing the entrances to Hovander Park and Fragrance Garden, and continuing until the trail merges with the above trail along the Nooksack River.

HIKING Continued stead Park, Tennant Lake and the Nooksack River dike. Park at either Hovander or Tennant Lake and follow the trail along the dike that connects the two. Tennant Marsh Boardwalk This is one of the local favorites. The boardwalk weaves throughout the marsh of Tennant Lake and interpretive signs tell of plants and birds you may see. Lake Terrell
Trails throughout the wildlife refuge area go around parts of the lake. Some areas are graveled and used by hunters when there is in-season hunting. When hunting is out of season, these trails are used to see the lake, and view birds and wildlife. One trail starts to the northeast of the parking lot and goes to the fishing dock. A maze of other trails can be accessed just as you enter the park. To get there, follow Mountain View Road west and then turn right on Lake Terrell Road.
