Welcome
from the Mayor of Ferndale
Welcome and enjoy your visit to our City! Our nearly 13,000 residents are proud of our growing community. You will find friendly neighbors who still look you in the eye and offer a smile! Ferndale’s historic downtown core offers free parking and a great place to stretch your legs with a pleasant walk. You can stroll along the bank of the Nooksack River through the Centennial Riverwalk Park and enjoy a beautiful vista of nearby Mount Baker. Public restrooms are available at the park and in the main plaza you can enjoy a dip in the fountain on a warm day.
Give your pet a short break in Vanderyacht Park, where they can enjoy the off-leash dog park with river access. A disc golf course may extend your stay in the park. To the south of the Riverwalk is historic Pioneer Park, which includes one of the largest collections of cedar plank historic log cabins in our nation. Some of the cabins, which include a church, school, and country store, date back to the 1870s. Three short blocks to the west on Main Street is our new Ferndale Public Library. Visitors are always welcome. On behalf of the entire Ferndale community, we sincerely look forward to seeing you. Stop by and say “Hi!” Gary S. Jensen, Mayor of Ferndale
GREETINGS from the CITY ADMINISTRATOR
Welcome to our fair City. Whether you are looking to buy your next house or just visiting old friends, I hope you find your visit to Ferndale fun and entertaining. Being blessed to live in such a visual stunning location, a trip to Ferndale can include side trips to the top of Mount Baker or a kayak paddle in the Bay. There is something for everyone here in our corner of the Pacific Northwest.

Ferndale itself boasts one of the truly hidden gems for historical buffs – Pioneer Park. Having the world’s largest collection of turn of the century cedar log cabins, Pioneer Park is a stroll back in history and is enjoyable for
all ages. You can pretend you are a famous outlaw at our olde time jail, contemplate the serenity of the Chapel or just stroll around the park to see how life in the early part of the 1900’s felt. During the summer months the park features docents who are eager to answer your questions regarding pioneer life but the park can be enjoyed all year long. Hopefully you are able to enjoy our city during the summer months when there are various festivals held downtown the biggest of which is the Old Settler’s Weekend but no matter the time of year, you can always find something to do in Ferndale. So, relax, slow down, and enjoy life – that is what it means to call Ferndale home.
Greg Young, City Administrator

HISTORY OF FERNDALE
By 1882, Ferndale was the third largest town in Whatcom County and had two stores, a hotel, two saloons and a post office. Ferndale garners its roots from the Lummi Tribe who called the land “Te-tas-um,” which meant, “the crossing place above Lummi.” The native culture is still alive today as seen throughout Ferndale, with displays of Story poles, weaved baskets and more. Many from the Lummi Nation continue to fish and harvest shell fish just as their ancestors did generation after generation. The city of Ferndale was founded in the 1800’s with the name, “Jam.” This was in reference to the nearby twomile log jam on the Nooksack River. Alice Eldridge, the first school teacher, was the first to call the town Ferndale. She admired the lush green ferns that surrounded the schoolhouse. This was characteristic of the Indian culture where names of sites and areas oftentimes described the site itself. As people moved to the area the name stuck. The first pioneer family to settle in Ferndale was a Texan named Billy Clark, and his Native American wife Cecilia Chanique. In 1873, they built a cabin near the Nooksack River and lived there for more than 10 years. Because Clark had to give up his citizenship in order to work for the Hudson Bay Company in Canada, he was not the first legal owner of any property in Ferndale. Darius Rogers, Clark’s old friend, filed claim to 174 acres. Along with his brother, Rogers opened the first business in Ferndale. This included a hotel and later a store. After a steamboat enterprise failed he moved to the west side of the river. The post office, which was a cedar log building that Rogers built, along with some residents and merchants, also moved to the west side. By 1882, Ferndale was the third largest town in Whatcom County and had two stores, a hotel, two saloons and a post office. Custer is located near Ferndale and has an elementary school, post office and several downtown businesses. Custer’s boundaries merge with Ferndale’s boundaries. Custer is a quaint area where farm land is
10
prevalent. Originally, the town was located at the intersection of the current Valley View and Bay roads, but in 1890-1892 the town moved to accommodate the railroad. The railroad continues to run through the town today. Custer was named after its first postmaster, Albert W. Custer. The Lummi Nation traditionally lived near the sea and in the mountain areas that surrounded Ferndale, and spoke the Salishan language. The tribe smoke-dried seafood, camas bulbs and sun-dried berries, and ate all species of shell fish, crab, salmon, trout, elk, deer and other land and sea mammals. They expressed their language, family heritage and religious traditions through their totem pole carvings. The reservation is a 5-mile long peninsula which is surrounded by Lummi Bay on the west, Bellingham Bay on the east, the smaller peninsula of Sandy Point, Portage Island and the associated tidelands.
INTERESTING FACTS Loretta Lynn was a resident of Custer and began her career performing at Bob's Tavern on Portal Way. .According to the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce, Ferndale was once home to a company which sold alarms that detected UFOs. The company went out of business.

PIONEERPARK Nestled within the City of Ferndale is an irreplaceable treasure called Pioneer Park. The Park represents one of the finest collections of original pioneer log cabins and contents in the Northwest. These eleven log cabins, built by the early pioneers of Whatcom County, sat alone in the early forests and rough clearings. Left to deteriorate they had an opportunity for a new life at Pioneer Park. To save them from destruction they were moved from various locations over the course of several decades to this site next to the Nooksack River. Others may be added in the future.
The City of Ferndale owns and maintains Pioneer Park and the Ferndale Heritage Society coordinates tours, utilizing historically trained interpreters for group and school tours. Any visitor, whether part of an organized group or not, may follow a self guided tour or ask for a staff person available during open hours. A large meeting room with adjoining kitchen and rest rooms are available to bus tours and food may be purchased with prior arrangement. Gifts are available at the general store.

Hemmed in between the Nooksack River, neighboring streets and Ferndale’s downtown district, this newly developed area offers a variety of cultural sights. Views of the Nooksack River along the river walk are splendid especially in autumn when the leaves are changing, or in the spring and summer when the flowers are in bloom. The plaza hosts a fountain, flag pole, year-round foliage, and a permanent art display chosen from local artwork. Story poles are also featured and bring the strong influence of Ferndale’s heritage of the Lummi Nation to the plaza. The plaza is located in downtown Ferndale on the west side of the bridge.
PUBLICART Stunning examples of Coast Salish culture can be viewed and experienced within the Ferndale community. Story Poles, an integral part of personal identity, can be found on Main Street and in Centennial Riverwalk Park. Look for educational opportunities on Coast Salish traditions offered at the new Ferndale Public Library by members of the Lummi Nation and other First Nation peoples. In celebration of April National Poetry Month, The Free Verse Photo Project sponsored locally by The Ferndale Arts Commission (FAC) is open for entry to all Whatcom County residents. A photograph is taken of a line or two of poetry that has been written off the page in a non-traditional way. The photograph mirrors personal interpretation of the lines. Look for submitted photographs displayed in participating Ferndale businesses during April. Poem in Your Pocket Day, now celebrated worldwide, is also sponsored locally by FAC. Share a favorite poem in your pocket on Thursday, April 30, 2015 with family, friends, teachers, librarians and random passersby. Look for participating Ferndale businesses that offer discounts and gifts to clients who read a poem from their pocket. Come join the celebration of poetry in Ferndale! April 2015 marks the beginning of The Ferndale Cherry Blossom Festival. The collaborative effort organized by The Ferndale Arts Commission is intended to nurture the relationship with our Japanese Sister City Minami Boso, to learn about and honor our cultural differences and commonalities and to beautify Ferndale with iconic Japanese Flowering Cherry Trees. First spring plantings will begin along the trail behind the Conoco-Phillips Sports Fields. Watch for your opportunity to donate a tree in the spirit of honored diversity and international friendship. The Ferndale Arts Commission sponsors Art in the Park the second weekend of September in historic Pioneer Park. The family-oriented event provides a jubilant venue for local visual artists to demonstrate and sell their works. Worldwide cultures are heartened by celebratory performing artists. Art in the Park is a Ferndale destination that’s free, open to the public and an engaging festivity for all ages. 19
FERNDALE
SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Ferndale School District serves 4825 students on ten campuses and employs 610 staff members. Ferndale’s six elementary schools range in size from Eagleridge (with close to 500 students) to tiny Beach School on Lummi Island, which will soon become an authorized International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. Each elementary features a strong academic core, music and extracurricular opportunities, active parent groups, and programs for students with unique learning requirements. Because early learning is critical, we provide free full-day kindergarten for every child and high-quality pre-school for children with greatest needs. Ferndale’s two middle schools (Vista and Horizon) offer personalized settings for adolescents during an important time of transition. In addition to academics, our middle schoolers participate in music, art, world language, athletics, and such extended learning activities as Student Council and Natural Helpers. At Ferndale High, home of the Golden Eagles, students can enroll in eight classes each semester (more than any other county high school), allowing them access to a menu of course offerings that includes numerous advanced placement programs, several world languages, various honors and college preparatory classes, and a robust Career and Technical Education program. Ferndale also offers a small high school option (Windward) for students who want something different. In addition to a rigorous academic program, its hallmarks include emphasis on relationships and community-building, service learning and leadership, parent involvement, and student voice. Ferndale schools are well-known for their (1) award-winning music, art, and drama programs; (2) excellent athletic teams; (3) multi-faceted extracurricular program involving nearly 1,000 students per year; (4) commitment to one-toone technology (which has manifested in nearly 2/3 of all secondary students having their own computing devices); (5) strong partnership with the Lummi Nation; (6) highly qualified staff; and (7) supportive community. Ferndale’s School Board, made up of five dedicated leaders, has been named “Board of Distinction” three years in a row for their commitment to transparent governance, public engagement, and student learning. The Board’s six Strategic Commitments guide the work of the district. Their seven community advisory committees provide stakeholders with opportunities to share in decision-making. FISHING Lake Terrell
The most common fishing in Ferndale is done at Lake Terrell where there is a boat launch area and two fishing docks. The best fishing is by boat at the center of the lake or near the lily pads. You must have a fishing license and discovery parking pass.
Tennant Lake is difficult to utilize as a fishing area due to the dense population of lily pads that fill the lake. A boat launch near Fragrance Garden will accommodate a small canoe or raft certain times of the year. Visitors are asked to respect the beavers, muskrats and other animals that make their home there. Fishing licenses can be purchased at the Ferndale Cost Cutter, located at 1750 LaBounty Road (384-1464)

Nooksack River
Another fishing favorite is the Nooksack River, which is accessible at the boat launch area off Ferndale Road, at Hovander Homestead Park and Vanderyacht Park. No parking pass is required but a fishing license is strictly enforced.
Brennan Pond
Brennan Pond is a favorite for those who enjoy packing their gear through the woods and tall grassy areas from Slater Road to the water. Once there, it can be muddy and only room for a few fishermen at a time. Many locals choose this location for the challenge of the hike and the hopes of secluded fishing. Park in the small lot on the north side of Slater Road near the railroad tracks. Depending on the season, the path can be clearly defined or somewhat overgrown.

Coast Millennium Trail
The portion of this trail that runs through Ferndale, starts to the west on Douglas Road. Follow the road east on Douglas Drive to the city limits and then right on Main Street to downtown. Turn south/right on Nielsen Ave., immediately before the railroad bridge. At this point there are two ways to go. First, follow the signs to the boat launch area, continuing on the path near the river that goes around the west side of Hovander Homestead Park. Continue to follow the river, passing Brennan Pond and exiting at the parking area on Slater road. An alternative route is to follow Nielsen Ave. south from Main Street, passing the entrances to Hovander Park and Fragrance Garden, and continuing until the trail merges with the above trail along the Nooksack River.
This trail is used mainly for people wanting to fish, but the trail is an excellent hike through the woods and fields. Park near the railroad tracks on Slater Road and go through the gate. The trail is not always clearly defined depending on weather conditions. Discovery Parking pass is required.
Vanderyacht Park
A trail around the perimeter of the park includes views of the pond and the Nooksack River. There are interpretive signs and benches along the trail. The parking lot is located at Portal Way and Washington Street.
POLO / RUGBY
There are two polo parks in Ferndale. One is on Paradise Road, west of Interstate-5, and the other is the Bellingham Polo Club, off of the Grandview Road exit. This is home for the Chuckanut Bay Rugby team. Views of Mt. Baker and the surrounding countryside make this a scenic park to watch and play polo and rugby. Take exit 266 and travel two miles east on Grandview. The road becomes Dahlberg. 7090 Dahlberg Road
NORTHWEST SOCCER PARK
Hovander Park Trails
Hikers can explore open meadows and wetlands, and observe warbler, sparrows, wrens, woodpecker and birds of prey on a six-mile hike through Hovander Homestead Park, Tennant Lake and the Nooksack River dike. Park at either Hovander or Tennant Lake and follow the trail along the dike that connects the two.
Tennant Marsh Boardwalk
This is one of the local favorites. The boardwalk weaves throughout the marsh of Tennant Lake and interpretive signs tell of plants and birds you may see. In the rainy weather water may almost level with the boardwalk, so close attention to footing is important. This area is closed when the area is flooded. The parking lot is located on Nielsen Road.
Lake Terrell
Trails throughout the wildlife refuge area go around parts of the lake. Some areas are graveled and used by hunters when there is in-season hunting. When hunting is out of season, these trails are used to see the lake, and view birds and wildlife. One trail starts to the northeast of the parking lot and goes to the fishing dock. A maze of other trails can be accessed just as you enter the park. To get there, follow Mountain View Road west and then turn right on Lake Terrell Road.

The district has career staffing and three stations, 24-hours a day, supplementing the dedicated volunteers who are assigned to all six stations. In 2014 the district answered 3100 calls for service. The number of calls for service has been increasing steadily since the early 1990s. The district is involved heavily in the community and participates in several events in and around the City of Ferndale. Last year, more than 1500 hours of “volunteer” time was spent at community events raising awareness of not only fire and personal safety, but other community needs as well.

RETAIL Along Main Street in historic downtown is where you’ll find most of Ferndale’s shopping district. Walk a few blocks and explore gift shops, thrift stores, clothing and hand crafted jewelry. You won’t find any chain stores here. While you’re taking in some shopping, look for murals painted on the sides of buildings and see if you can spot which buildings are over 100 years old.
