Sharanu Sharanarthi! Wish you all a very happy new year! My sincere wishes to all sisters and brothers of VSNA who are devoting significant times of their lives to strengthen this organization making it a stronger fraternity with every passing year. As Basavanna said, he also meritoriously exemplified the line of his vachana ‘ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿ ವರು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಯೂ ಸಲ್ಲಿ ವರಯ್ಯ ...’ It was a priding moment for Sharanas all over the world when Basaveshwara’s statue was unveiled in London on November 14, 2015! Surpassing the boundaries of Kalyana, like Basavanna did in the 12th century, he transcended all boundaries to inspire the world today by humbly shining as a jewel in London reminding the world of democratic ideals that everyone can inculcate in spirit and in action. The Newsletter Committee is proud to bring forth this edition of Baandhavya for your readership. This edition bears various articles on Veerashaiva philosophy and philosophers, Ashtavaranas, Vachanas, news from different parts of the world with special coverage on the unveiling of Basaveshwara statue and updates from Central VSNA and different local chapters of this organization. This quarter, the Editorial Committee got together to revisit the guidelines for contributions to Baandhavya and have come up with the following for all to adhere to: The articles should reflect Veerashaiva/Lingayat philosophy, highlighting its rich religious and spiritual heritage. Submissions may include the life of Sharanas, Vachana interpretations and the philosophy. 1. Articles should be original in nature and should not have been published in any other format/heading in previous editions of Baandhavya or any other VSNA publications. 2. If the articles contain any part or paragraph of previously published books/articles, appropriate references should be provided. 3. Articles should be 1-2 pages (exceptions can be made for articles up to 4 pages based on the subject/topic). 4. Up to 2 articles per author or subject will be considered per publication. 5. Editorial committee will review the article within 5 business days and the Editor-in-chief will communicate to the author of its acceptance/revision/rejection. 6. Revised article will be considered as a new submission and due course will be followed. 7. Articles received within the prescribed due date will be considered for publication in the newsletter. If an article is received after the due date, it will be considered for the following newsletter. While we uphold all contributions with high esteem, we request one and all to go through the above for writing all future articles that will make it to subsequent editions of Baandhavya. President’s Message Dear VSNA Members & Patrons, Wish you a Happy New Year - 2016! During this 4th quarter of 2015, Basava admirers witnessed an historical event – The Unveiling of Basaveshwara Statue very close to the British Parliament in London! How is this related to VSNA? It demonstrated a way to propagate Basava Philosophy something that VSNA can emulate in North America in achieving its mission – Preserve, Protect and Propagate the Philosophy of Basaveshwara and his contemporaries. One key aspect that the British appreciated in Basava is his preaching of equality of all human kind (casteless, gender equality and so on) and the parliament-like concept Anubhava Mantapa introduced to the world before Magna Carta, the basis for the British Parliament. The same two values apply to the North America – United States of America and Canada. Hats off to Dr. Neeraj Patil, who successfully navigated through the ups and downs of such a venture and now we have a permanent icon in a prominent place that will shine forever! This same idea should inspire VSNA members to have such icons in major locations in the United States and Canada. Another good news is that the 2016 VSNA Convention committee is all set with the registrations that are now open, starting with packages. Readers are encouraged to register early online via – www.vsnaconvention.com. This newsletter contains few highlights of the Basaveshwara Statue event, and the spiritual content though vachana descriptions and articles related to Veerashaivism. The BOD and BOR updates including updates on fund raising, and the local chapter updates are provided. I am thankful to all contributors to this newsletter – Baandhavya, and the new VIRC-Newsletter committee, led by Shrishail Hadimani, for scrutinizing the quality of the articles. While humanity witnessed revolutionary Basavanna laying a simple yet grand foundation for a democratic movement based on universal humanizing principles in the 12th century, the efforts that followed to sustain these philosophical doctrines in the centuries thereafter, have been no less than revolutions themselves. Many exalted saints, time and again, have surfaced to uplift the society through different forms of Kayaka on a large scale and hence Lingayat dharma has been shining brighter and brighter. One such splendid form of Kayaka through Ganayoga has been leading the light for the visually challenged, poor and orphans, through music and art at Veereshwara Punyashrama in Gadag since 1942. Established and developed by the visually impaired celibate jewels who greatly practised Shivayoga - Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi and Padma Bhushan Sri. Puttaraju Gavayi, both of who were guided and inspired by Sri. Hangal Kumaraswamiji, Veereshwara Punyashrama today has become an emblem of exemplary classical music and social service. When achieving excellence with all important faculties gifted by God itself is challenging, conceptualizing a social revolution for the disabled through music could have been possible by a progressive visionary saint like Sri.Hangal Kumaraswamiji.

The role of a Guru in eradicating darkness is pivotal and just so Sri. Hangal Kumaraswamiji was that light in a patron who not only took two blind children - Panchakshara (birth name: Gadigeyya) and his brother in his stride of Shivayoga but also decided to train them in classical music. Unfortunately Panchakshara’s brother passed away soon after due to an illness. Panchakshara although disheartened at the loss of his brother went on to make the most of opportunities Sri. Hanagal Kumaraswamiji presented to him. Kumaraswamiji personally overlooked Panchakshara’s training and ensured continued and accelerated training with different music teachers. With such encouragement and patronage, Panchakshara formally got trained in classical vocal and instrumental music. When there was a dearth of music teachers in Hangal, Kumaraswamiji took special interest in Panchakshara’s musical advancement and sent him to Mysore to learn Carnatic music. Panchakshara soared higher in his musical journey at Mysore and after a few years got invited by Kumaraswamiji to sing at Veerashaiva Mahasabhe in Bagalkot. In his performance at Bagalkot, Panchakshara elevated the atmosphere with his melody and brought tears to Kumaraswamiji and everyone present, raising the standards far and beyond. Panchakashara continued his musical journey by learning HIndustani music and eventually took to teaching music in Shivayoga Mandira, Bagalkot under the tutelage of Kumaraswamiji. Shivayoga Mandira was a school for learning Shivayoga and providing musical training there became difficult for Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi due to increasing strength of his students. Kumaraswamiji then blessed Panchakshara Gavayi with a noble idea of starting a mobile music school by traveling all over the state and adopting a life of musical service for the physically and socially disabled children. WIth that spark from a Guru like Sri. Hangal Kumaraswamiji, began Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi’s social musical revolution which instrumentalized music to light up the lives of blind and other underprivileged children. For this musical social revolution to get realized, it took the divine bondage of a Guru who proposed brilliantly and a Shishya who disposed with conviction. Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi began to travel far and wide with his mobile school and gathered students at every place through his music. There suddenly arose bright hopes amidst the blind and underprivileged who now were blessed with a Guru; a Guru who was dedicated to improving their lives through music and adding meaning, thereby rendering their existence worthy. With all the travel and earnest efforts in music Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi earned great respect from society. With the earnings from music and drama, a small piece of land was bought on the outskirts of Gadag and with the support from local benefactors, Veereshwara Punyashrama was founded in 1942. Children from all castes and creed with different social backgrounds joined the ashram where they lived, ate and sang together. While this beautiful musical family had just begun to thrive, within a few months of the establishing of Veereshwara Punyashram, Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi passed away in 1944. But the power of blessings of two Mahagurus - Sri. Hangal Kumaraswamiji and Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi lingered and continued to persist strongly in Sri. Puttaraju Gavayi who Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi had rightly chosen as his successor amongst his disciples. Sri. Puttaraju Gavayi too was blind from a very young age and was taken by his uncle to Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi. Puttaraju Gavayi’s tryst with music and art made incredible progress with his Guru Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi’s mentoring. Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi stretched Puttaraju Gavayi’s learning by engaging different teachers to teach him Sanskrit, Hindi and Kannada. With exceptional training from his Guru, Puttaraju had quickly learnt Hindustani music, Carnatic music, various musical instruments and had become his favorite disciple. Puttaraju had also seen the challenges in sustaining the musical endeavor for the underprivileged and had striven with his Guru for continuing the welfare. Pursuing his spiritual life with the Linga in his palm, Sri. Puttaraju dedicated his life to music, literature and theatre. When it was time to take over the reigns of Veereshwar Punyashrama, Sri. Puttaraju Gavayi rose to the rank and worked intensely to continue the kayaka of social and musical revolution. Tirelessly, he raised funds for the ashram and with kind donations, he established the ‘Andara Shikshana Samity’ in 1991, a trust that has founded around 10 educational institutions. This trust runs a primary school, a high school, a pre-University college, an Arts college, a teachers’ training college and a Braille school. It also set up the ‘Pandit Panchakshara Gavai Music College’ which is considered to be one of the finest music schools in Karnataka. Today, more than 1000 children reside in the ashram and are fed free of cost, most of whom are blind. On the personal front Sri.Puttaraju Gavayi was an established scholar having authored more than 80 books in Sanskrit, Hindi and Kannada. He has also translated the Bhagavad Gita in Braille. 8
This social musical revolution sparked by Sri.Hangal Kumaraswamiji, founded by Sri.Panchakshara Gavayi and exponentially developed by Sri.Puttaraju Gavayi is one of its kind in service to humanity. That the Lingayat tenets of kayaka and dasoha can be practised and propagated through music, touching the lives of more than 15,000 disabled children till date, deserves to be showcased as nothing less than a victory for Basavanna’s principles. Like one of the torchbearers of Veereshwara Punyashrama described, this pristine school that was born in music continues to live in music today. The musical movement in the ashram steadfastly persists to educate and house the underprivileged bringing out remarkable talent, advancing art and making the lives of hundreds of children. For having served the underprivileged in this relentless manner, Sri.Puttaraju Gavayi was richly conferred with the civilian award ‘Padma Bhushan’ from the Government of India in early 2010. He has also received many other awards from various institutions all of which he has dedicated to his visually impaired students and thousands of devotees. Unfortunately, the world saw the last of his lights in September 2010 when he attained Lingaikya. Both the Ganayogis - Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi and Sri. Puttaraju Gavayi were honorable Shivayogis who served the society relentlessly proving to the world that it takes vision and not sight to lead the light for the countless needy. Just as Basavanna sang to Kudalasangama pleading to use himself for music, Sri. Panchakshara Gavayi and Sri. Puttaraju Gavayi lived the life of divine musical lore and dedicated themselves to uplift the society through the sound of music... ಎನ್ನ ಕಾಯವ ದಂಡಿಗೆಯ ಮಾಡಯಯ ಎನ್ನ ಶಿರವ ಸೋರೆಯ ಮಾಡಯಯ ಎನ್ನ ನ್ರಗಳ ತಂತಿಯ ಮಾಡಯಯ ಎನ್ನ ಬೆರಳ ಕಡಿಿ ಯ ಮಾಡಯಯ ಬತಿತ ೋಸ ರಾಗವ ಹಾಡಯಯ ಉರದಲೊತಿತ ಬಾರಿಸು ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವ!

Vibhūti Linga Raju, M. D. Plainview, New York. Vibhūti is the sacred ash that is used during the Iṣṭaliṅga worship, and also during the physical type of spiritual initiation by a Guru upon a disciple. It is not only used for smearing the Iṣṭaliṅga, but also to smear on the body of the person performing the worship. Although Vibhūti can be applied on to many places on the body, forehead is the main area for application where three parallel finger-width lines about six inches long or to fill the forehead from side to side is applied. Vibhūti is produced from cow-dung. The dung is collected without it being contaminated with other material, made into balls, dried, and then baked. One Basavaṇṇa’s vaĉana (vaĉana 51 in reference 1) goes something like this: For water in a pond, lotus is the decoration; For a city, park is the decoration; For an ocean, waves are the decoration; For a woman, virtue is the decoration; For the sky, moon is the decoration; For our Kūḍala Saṅgama’s Sharaṇas, The sacred ash-mark on their foreheads is the decoration. Another Basavaṇṇa’s vaĉana (vaĉana 139 in the same reference 1) is something like this: It is not stringing several beads, dancing and jumping in joy, smearing sacred ash in many places, sporting and playing in the middle of a pageant, eating and leaving after taking the tāṁbūla; it is not that at all! Kūḍala Saṅgama Dēva will not approve of those who have not yet offered their body, mind, and wealth. Although, traditionally, Vibhūti is used routinely during worship, it seems that it is not as important as offering body, mind and wealth to the godly (Guru, Jaṅgama, and the Community). Śūnya Saṁpᾱdane (2) does not seem to give too much importance to Vibhūti itself or to its application. Explanation is not given anywhere. The term Vibhūti comes there in three places: In one place, it is in Prabhudēva’s vaĉana which comes in the preliminary sthala pertaining to his Dīkṣᾱ (spiritual initiation). There was no physical type of initiation, and the vaĉana says that his mental type of initiation by his Guru Animiṣa was performed without smearing the Vibhūti and other such physical aspects. The second place is in the physical type of Dīkṣᾱ (spiritual initiation) performed by Ĉennabasavaṇṇa upon Siddharᾱmayya. Here, Ĉennabasavaṇṇa’s vaĉana describes the twenty-one types of initiation, seven each in the three main types pertaining to the corporal, vital, and mental aspects. Vibhūti application is fifth of the corporal initiation. It just says that it consists of ashen application to the crown. The third time is in Mahᾱdēviyakka’s vaĉana where she adores Basavaṇṇa with fifty-two characteristics. One of the features is that Basavaṇṇa wears the ash-mark Vibhūti. It seems that Vibhūti is used in what appears to be in the initial phases of worship. Then the worship shifts to the internal worship of the formless internal Liṅga. Veerashaivas/Liṅgaayatas believe that the real worship is not with material things, it is with pure devotion and knowledge. The details of the physical acts of Iṣṭaliṅga worship are necessary only to strengthen the will.

********* Rudrᾱkṣa Linga Raju, M. D. Plainview, New York. Rudrᾱkṣa is the rosary bead. The Rudrākṣa beads are the hard seeds of the Rudrākṣa tree. The beads are strung on a string before they are used. Rudrākṣa means from Rudra’s eyes. The legend is that the three eyed Rudra, the destroyer of ignorance, opens the third eye in the forehead to destroy three cities of the three atrocious demons. As a consequence, tears from the three eyes of Rudra fall to the ground where the Rudrākṣa trees grow. A good Rudrākṣa bead is to be free from any holes made by worms or defects, to be of golden hue and should not have been worn by others. Rudrākṣas on a string are usually worn around the neck similar to a necklace. One who is engaged in Liṅga worship is expected to wear the sacred Rudrākṣa. Two of Basavaṇṇa’s vaĉanas (vaĉanas number 180 and 277 in reference 1) are as follows: Bathing and wearing clean clothes, I was like a woman not being loved by a man! Smearing sacred ash and wearing Rudrākṣa, I have been there without your grace! We do not have those with sinful worldly life, living in our sect; Save me as you please O Kūḍala Saṅgama Dēva! What does it matter if I smear my outside, unless I am pure inside? What does it matter if I wear beads, unless my mind/heart is not touched? How should I fare, if I do not remember Kūḍala Saṅgama Dēva with heartfelt love? In the above two vaĉanas, Basavaṇṇa means that merely wearing Rudrākṣa does not result in receiving Lord’s grace. You need inner purity and heartfelt love of the Divine. Śūnya Saṁpᾱdane (1) does not give any importance to Rudrᾱkṣa. It does not have anything on this item. ಅವರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತತ ರೆಕಣ್ಣು ಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ಕತ್ತ ಲೆ ಇದೆ. ಕತ್ತ ಲೆ ಎುಂದರೆ ಅಜ್ಞಾ ನ. ಎುಂತ್ಹ ಕತ್ತ ಲೆ ನಮಮ ನ್ನು ಆವರಸಿದೆ ಎುಂಬುದನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ. ನಾವು ಕಾಣ್ಣವ ಪ್ರ ತಿಯುಂದನ್ನು (ಒಬಬ ವಯ ಕ್ತತ , ಒುಂದು ವಸ್ತತ , ವಿಷಯ, ಪ್ರ ಸಂಗ ಎಲ್ಲ ವನ್ನು ) ನಾವು ಒುಂದು ಅಳತೆಗೋಲಿನುಂದ ನೋಡುತೆತ ೋವೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಅಳತೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಎಷ್ಟೆ ಚೆನಾು ಗಿದೆ, ಚೆನಾಗಿಲ್ಲ ಎುಂದು ನರ್ಧರಸ್ತತೆತ ೋವೆ. ಅದು ಹೋಗಿರಬೇಕ್ತತ್ತತ , ಹಾಗಿರಬೇಕ್ತತ್ತತ ಎುಂದು ಬಯಸ್ತತೆತ ೋವೆ. ಅದಕೆೆ ಅನ್ನಗುಣವಾಗಿ ಅದು ನಮಗೆ ಸ್ತಖ, ದುುಃಖ, ಸಮಾಧಾನ, ಅಸಮಾಧಾನ ಇತ್ತಯ ದಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತ ದೆ. ಈ ಅಳತೆಗೋಲು ನಮಮ ನ್ನು ಒಮ್ಮಮ ಸ್ತಖದ ಶಿಖರಕೆೆ ಮತೊಮ್ಮಮ ನರಾಸೆಯ ಪಾತ್ತಳಕೆೆ ಕೊುಂಡಯ್ಯಯ ತ್ತ ದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಸ್ತಖ ದುುಃಖದ ಚಕರ ದಲಿಲ ಸಿಕ್ಕೆ ತೊಳಲಾಡುತೆತ ೋವೆ. “ಈ ಅಳತೆಗೋಲು ಬಂದುದೆಲಿಲ ುಂದ? ಯಾವುದನಾು ದರೂ ನೋಡಲು ನಮಗೆ ಅದರ ಅವಶ್ಯ ಕತೆಯಿದೆಯೆ?” ಎುಂದು, ಎುಂದೂ ನಮಮ ನ್ನು ನಾವು ಪ್ರ ಶಿು ಸಿಕೊಳುು ವುದಿಲ್ಲ . ಇದೇ ಕಂಗಳ ಮುಂದಣ ಕತ್ತ ಲೆ. ಮನದಲಿಲ ನಾನಾ ಆಸೆಗಳಿರುತ್ತ ವೆ. ಬಗೆ ಬಗೆಯ ವಾಹನಗಳ, ಯಂತೊರ ೋಪ್ಕರಣಗಳ (gadget), ದೊಡಡ ಮನೆಗಳ, ಒಡವೆಗಳ, ಸಿೋರೆಗಳ, ಊಟ ತಿುಂಡಿಗಳ, ಕ್ತೋತಿಧ ಪ್ಡೆಯ್ಯವ, ಇನ್ನು ಏನೇನೋ ಆಸೆಗಳು ಮನದಲಿಲ ಮನೆಮಾಡಿರುತ್ತ ವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇವು ಯಾವವುಗಳಿುಂದಲೂ ಮನಸ್ತು ಪೂತಿಧಯಾಗಿ ತೃಪ್ತ ವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ . ಒುಂದನ್ನು ಪ್ಡೆದ ನಂತ್ರ ಇನು ುಂದು, ಮತೊತ ುಂದು, ಮಗದೊುಂದು ಎುಂದು ಇನ್ನು ಇನ್ನು ಓಡುತ್ತ ಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತ ದೆ ಮನಸ್ತು . ಇದು ಮನಸಿು ನ ರೋತಿ. ಇದು ಅದರ ಅರ್ಧವಿಲ್ಲ ದ ಚಾಳಿ, ಒಮ್ಮಮ ಇದರ ಈ ಓಟವನ್ನು ನಧಾನಗಳಿಸಿದರೆ ಅರ್ವಾ ನಲಿಲ ಸಿದರೆ ಏನಾಗುತ್ತ ದೆ? ಎುಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸ್ತವುದಿಲ್ಲ ನಾವು. ಅದರ ಈ ಆಸೆಯಿುಂದ ನಮಗೆ ಎುಂದ್ಗದರೂ ಸ್ತಖ ಸಿಕ್ತೆ ದೆಯೆ? ಎುಂದು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಳುು ವುದಿಲ್ಲ ನಾವು. ಇದೇ ಮನದ ಮುಂದಣ ಮರವೆ. ತ್ನು ಈ ಆಸೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂತಿಧಗಳಿಸಲು ಮನಸ್ತು ಸದ್ಗ ಹೆಣಗಾಡುತ್ತ ದೆ, ನಾನಾ ಉಪಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತ ದೆ. ಏನೇನನು ೋ, ಯಾರಾರನು ೋ ತ್ತಳಿಯಲು ನೋಡುತ್ತ ದೆ, ತ್ತನ್ನ ಮನ್ನು ಗಾ ಲು ಅವಕಾಶ್ಕಾೆ ಗಿ ಕಾಯ್ಯತ್ತ ದೆ. ಒಟ್ಟೆ ನಲಿಲ ಮನಸ್ತು ಸದ್ಗ ಆಸೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂತಿಧಮಾಡಿಕೊಳು ಲು ಸೆಣಸಾಡುತ್ತ ದೆ. ಇದೇ ಒಳಗಣ ರಣರಂಗ. ಆದರೆ ಹೊರಗಡೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ತ್ತನ್ನ ಬಹಳ ಸಭ್ಯ , ಬಹಳ ಉದ್ಗರ, ಇತ್ರರ ಬಗೆಾ ಕಾಳಜಯ್ಯಳು ವನ್ನ, ಶುಂತಿಪ್ರರ ಯನ್ನ ಎುಂದು ತೊೋರಸಿ ಕೊಳುು ತ್ತ ದೆ. ಇದೇ ಹೊರಗಣ ಶುಂಗಾರ. ಒಳಗಣ ರಣರಂಗ ಮತ್ತತ ಹೊರಗಣ ಶುಂಗಾರದ ಈ ದ್ಗರಯನ್ನು ಜನರು ಅನೇಕ ವಷಧಗಳಿುಂದ ತ್ತಳಿಯ್ಯತ್ತ ಬಂದಿದ್ಗಾ ರೆ. ಇದು ಎುಂತ್ಹ ದ್ಗರ? ಎುಂದು ಕೇಳುತಿತ ದ್ಗಾ ರೆ ಅಲ್ಲ ಮ ಪ್ರ ಭುಗಳು. ಎುಂದರೆ ಈ ದ್ಗರಗೆ ಅರ್ಧವಿದೆಯೆ? ಇದು ಬೇಕೆ? ಎುಂಬ ಭಾವ ಇಲಿಲ ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತ ದೆ. ಕತ್ತ ಲೆಯಲಿಲ ಯೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ವಯ ವಹಾರಗಳು ನಡೆಯ್ಯತಿತ ವೆ. ಜನರಗೆ ಯಾವುದು ಸರ, ಯಾವುದು ಸರಯಲ್ಲ , ಯಾವುದು ನಜವಾದ ಸ್ತಖ, ಯಾವುದು ಭ್ರ ಮ್ಮ, ಎನ್ನು ವುದರ ಪ್ರವೆ ಇಲ್ಲ . ಕತ್ತ ಲೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರಹರಸಿಕೊಳು ಬೇಕೆುಂಬ ತ್ವಕವಿಲ್ಲ .
We have eyes that allow us to see. Yet, there is darkness before the eyes. The darkness is the ignorance. The ignorance makes us evaluate the people, the scenery and the events we witness with our own measuring stick. We say how great this thing is or how better it could have been. We use this inference to take us to the heights of pleasure or depths of sorrow. We oscillate in this cycle of ups and downs. Do we ever question as to why we use this measuring stick? How did we acquire it? Is it necessary? This is the darkness in front of the eyes! Can we get out of judging people and events? We all know that the mind is a monkey. It makes us to hop from one thing to the other constantly. We are happy with what we have for a moment and start desiring the next higher pleasure in the next moment. We are never satisfied or content with what is at present. This is the ignorance in front of the mind! The mind is struggling with the ups and downs of desires. This is the battlefield inside. Yet, we try to project our happiness outwardly. We try to show off that all is well while the struggle is going on inside! This duality is our state of existence always! Allama Prabhu questions ‘what is this way of life?” Do we ever get out of this mode of living and develop the awareness to make our inward and outward the same? Let us see and think clearly!

Central VSNA Updates BOD 4th Quarter Updates By - Channu Kambalyal, President VSNA During the 4th quarter, the BOD members held 3 BOD meetings and several brainstorming sessions to discuss various tasks. Following are few progress of the tasks from the Two-Year Agenda during the 4th quarter: 1. Official Communication: Notifications regarding fund raising for Basaveshwara Statue in London sent to all members and patrons. Subsequently, we sent out notifications related to VSNA Life Members drive, VSNA Convention Trust Fund and VSNA Scholarship Fund drives. Third Quarter newsletter published. 2. 2015 Convention Update: The Convention team is working to publish the souvenir and also close the accounts with a balanced budget. 3. Ten Year - Annual Conventions Readiness: 2016 Convention team of Maryland chapter is all set for hosting and actively working towards the major event. The registrations are now open. Notifications sent to all members and patrons. Georgia chapter leaders are mobilizing the local chapter for the 2017 convention. Detroit, Chicago and Toronto chapters have been invited to host conventions for years – 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively. The Central VSNA task group will have follow-up meetings with all chapters to ensure our readiness. 4. Web-Site Updates: Work on provisioning for the online registration of members is in progress. Matrimony site defects were fixed. 5. VIRC - Newsletters: The VIRC team is now revived. The team of 5 consisting of Shrishail Hadimani as its Director, Yuvaraj Patil, Sajjan Shiva, Rohini Menashinakai and Supriya Antin-Kaddargi has been formed. This core team will be in charge of ensuring quality of articles and publications from VSNA. The president and BOR Chair to be in the team for all official matters. 6. Rejuvenate Local Chapters & Voice of the Chapters: How to rejuvenate local chapters is documented online: VSNA-Resources-How To Rejuvenate Local Chapters. Local chapters are encouraged to follow ideas presented in these documents. We also introduced Voice-of-The Chapters topic to provide more time for chapters’ concerns and feedback. 7. Youth Participation: The focus is now on youth participation at the 2016 VSNA convention. Youth leaders - Ms. Neeta D’Souza of NY and Tejas from MD and many others under guidance of Mrs. Leena Paul met to discuss activities for the convention. 8. Bylaw Committee: The bylaw committee completed their review of VSNA Bylaws and submitted the latest to the President. The President will hold discussions with BOD members and incorporate any changes along with feedback from BOR and other members before getting a formal approval of BOD. 9. Life-Membership Drive: 12 new life-members were added this year. 10. Scholarship Fundraising: Around $1739 has been collected by Dada Patil and Team towards Scholarship Fund to-date in 2015. Notifications for scholarship funds and sponsors is to be started in December 2015. 11. Welcome Kit, Brochures and Guidelines Documents: Welcome Kit document is reviewed by BOD and BOR. A soft copy of the welcome kit document will be sent to new life members of 2015. 12. Accounting & Investment Management: Following is the summary of 2015 financials:

***** BOR 4th Quarter Updates By - Laxmi Hiremath, Board of Regents, Chairperson During the 4th quarter, BOR discussed the topic of matrimony and the web page developed by Uma Sajjan. Improvements and suggestions were conversed. Team member Uma Sajjan has taken this project very personally and made it her own and has been very successful at that development. Fellow BOR Rohini Mensinkai is helping her with admin tasks. Dada Patil had six creative suggestions for local chapter get-togethers: 1. Meet at least 6 times a year (once every two months) 2. Meeting should not be related with any other celebration such as Christmas, Deepavali, Ganesh pooja etc. 3. Basava Jayanti should be celebrated on a grand scale and include invitees from other religious group or community as well as non-members. 4. At least one meeting should be dedicated for Dasoha / Volunteering 5. Every meeting should start with Linga Pooja. Its significance should be shared with the members. 6. Each meeting should include one Vachana along with its description, or a Sharana story or significance of Dasoha, Lingu or Kayaka. Veerashaiva philosophy and Basava Tatva must be given priority at each of the gatherings.

SharaNu, Greetings from the members of VSNA-Maryland Chapter Convention Committee! As the July 4th weekend approaches, Americans plan to celebrate their declaration of independence from the tyranny of the British Empire. For us, Veerashaivas, it is that time to look forward to enjoy the annual VSNA convention and celebrate freedom from the tyranny of caste- and creed- based discrimination and meaningless myths and social structures that ruled mankind for centuries. VSNA conventions are where we meet our old friends and make new friends, while sharing, learning, and reinforcing our values. It is the Anubhava Goshti that our Guru Basavanna established at Kalyana. It is unlikely that the sharaNas of the 12th century knew that such gatherings would happen on a new soil across the seven seas almost nine centuries later, but the enduring power of that knowledge continues to bring us all together in a land so far away year after year. This year, the Veerashaiva families of Maryland, one of the birth places of VSNA, have the privilege of lighting the lamp of the 39th VSNA convention. We take immense pride in inviting you to join this congregation in a most serene setting of Turf Valley Resort at Ellicott City, MD, that is touted by us as ‘Kadali Vana’. The Convention will be a 3-day event, July 1st will be reserved for golf enthusiasts who wish to play at the resort and for others to have a round of seeing the magnificent museums and monuments of our Nation’s Capital (or simply relax at the “19 th hole”). The next 2 days (July 2 nd and 3rd) will be dedicated to the religious activities and cultural entertainment. The host Chapter is working hard to bring you a very comfortable stay for the body and a religious feast for the soul. The five cardinal principles “Immaculate Body, Mind, Thoughts, Deeds and Words” are absolute qualities of a sharaNa. VSNA Local Chapters Updates VSNA – South California Chapter Highlights of 3rd Quarter: June 6th 2015 marked Basava Jayanti celebration day in VSNA SoCal Chapter, about 65 people gathered to feel its throb. Many new families set colors high of a new cheer. Event started off with Guru Pooja led by President Manu Swamy whose clear voice and deep connection to the Guru brimmed the room with a divine presence. Little kids in Sharana costumes had lined up one behind the other waiting in abated breathe ready to recite and perform. Some of the greatest Sharanas of all times entered the podium "BontaDevi", "Akkanagamma", "Ammuge Devaiah, Rayamma", "Akkamahadevi", "Aaidakki Lakkama" followed by Basavanna story narrator each of these kids enthralled the audience by their vachanas insight and mono-act. Highlight of the show was "Basava" skit performance by adults, costume and The presence of Basavanna, AllamaPrabhu, CHennaBasavanna, Haralayya and Kalyanamma was mesmerizing. Varieties of delicacies served as Prasada was sumptuous, quenching the thirst of all Taste Buds. All in all a grandeur event. May Lord Basava continue to shine and guide us in his light.. Highlights of 4th Quarter: VSNA South California hosted a Dasoha event to feed the homeless in Orange County. Rescue mission has a large facility and holds around 200 people providing them food, shelter and training during their temporary tenure at the county. A mouthwatering delicious menu was crafted by president Manu which had the perfect blend of eastern spices in western delicacies. In 2.5hrs soup, pasta, fruits, salad and bread loafs were readily prepared and transferred into pots waiting to be served. Bell rang to 6pm, Kitchen counters were opened with an applause to the volunteers for graciously bringing in the ingredients and preparing it a fresh. Serving the Prasada felt much more joyful then preparing, so it seemed. Event ended with a smile and a group photo shot with Ms. Barbara, the facility coordinator.

VSNA - North Carolina Chapter By Priyanka Lalgondar and Rahul Tumkur Diwali is the festival of lights held sometime between October and November. Diwali marks the beginning of the year in India. The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, and is associated with the Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity. The variations in the Diwali story can be found in the different regions of India. In north India they celebrate the victory of Lord Rama against Ravana. South India celebrates the victory of Krishna against demon Narakasura. During Diwali it is believed goddess Lakshmi wanders earth looking to be welcomed into homes, thus people light candles and open their doors to invite her in. The main components of the Diwali celebration is the Lakshmi puja, and the lighting of firecrackers and candles. VSNA chapter of North Carolina met for Deepavali which was held on December 6 Sunday. During this meeting we had many programs and rituals to worship our Lord Shiva and Lakshmi. We had programs such as the Linga Pooja, which is our main pooja to the Lingu during our VSNA meetings. We had other programs such as kids singing shiva songs during this meeting. Also everyone sang shiva songs like the Brahma Murari Surarchita Lingam and chanted a Vachana by Basavanna called Kalabeda Kolabeda. After doing all of our rituals, kids and adults sang songs. There were cultural programs too by kids and dances. Also we spoke about current events to help and volunteer for our community. Finally, the food served was delicious. We had a good experience to serve the community as part of this event.
VSNA – Ohio Chapter Deepavali celebration in November was widely popular and there was a great deal of enthusiasm and festive spirit amongst the attendees. 50 people attended and it was hosted by Shiv and Leena Hiremath. The function started with an invocation prayer to Lord Ganesha and Lakshmi followed by an update from the chapter president on how our various get-togethers tie to the VSNA mission statement. There was a charity drive to support the holiday cause as well. We also observed a minute of silence to express our prayers for the victims of Paris terrorism. The highlight of this Deepavali celebration was the entertainment program with participation from both adults and the youth generation!

In addition to the Indian festivals we also celebrate the global festivals such as Christmas. This helps us continue to nurture the bonds the VSNA families have fostered throughout the year and boost the youth engagement. This also served as an excellent opportunity to thank the members for their participation in VSNA sponsored charitable programs.
Adopt a family cause: Through the donation drive at Deepavali, this Christmas we were able to adopt 3 families who were either homeless or close to being homeless. The wish list of these families were gathered and shopped for by the VSNA Ohio members. Kids participated in budget management and gift wrapping the presents where the focus is on giving, helping the ones in need. Meals on Wheels Program: VSNA Ohio members have continued to deliver meals to the senior citizens of the local communities and stay committed to this cause in year 2015. YWCA Meal Hosting: VSNA Ohio has provided 350 free meals to the homeless in the year 2015 and have volunteered in the YWCA Shelter kitchen 5 times. Kids participation has been quite high with them sweeping the dining areas and helping prepare the meals and serve them.

VSNA – Connecticut Chapter During this Labor Day Weekend, BDC conducted Basava Kammata I in Hartford, CT organized by VSNA CT Chapter. The family workshop introduced the key concepts of Guru Basavanna to both adults and children. The members of VSCT did a terrific job of organizing the workshop to bring the message of Guru Basavanna to their community. The efforts of Vani, Mahesh, Suraj, Asha Yashavanth, and the entire team is much appreciated.

VSNA – Detroit Chapter By - Samarth Setru, Youth President On Saturday September 19, 2015, the Detroit Chapter started the third quarter with the Ganesh Chaturthi function, which was held in Troy, Michigan. The event began with devotional songs and stuthis. Following this was a Linga Pooja led by the youth of the Detroit Chapter. Afterwards, the youth performed many songs and dances relating to Ganesha. Also, a presentation on Ganesha was given and a shloka was recited. The Indian National Anthem was played to celebrate the 68th Independence Day of India. The program concluded with a Mangala Arathi Pooja. The VSNA Youth Conference Call was held on September 27, 2015. The Detroit Chapter was represented by youth member Tanvi Kartal. Vachanas were recited to start the event. Also, the upcoming National Convention in Maryland was discussed. Another discussion focused on how the youth of VSNA can be represented at the national level. This conference call brought all the chapters together and united the youth representatives of VSNA. Deepavali function was held on November 21 and emceed by VSMI youth Samarth and Nidhi. Many of the youth from Detroit chapter performed at the event. There were Bollywood dances, flavors of India, and instrumentals by children. The event concluded with professional singers from Detroit Area.

Basaveshawara Statue in London, United Kingdom Basaveshwara Statue in London, United Kingdom was unveiled by Prime Minister of India – Narendra Modi on November 14, 2015. The event was also attended by few key British parliamentarians and dignitaries, and also from various international organizations associated with Basaveshwara philosophy. VSNA was represented by Channu Kambalyal, President VSNA, and Ratna and Guru Bale from VSNA - New York Chapter.

VSNA Fund Raising VSNA Convention Trust Fund Since the last announcement was made via email notifications, we have added few more contributions from our members and supports. Through this newsletter, we would once again appeal to all, to contribute to the Convention Trust Fund. We still have a long way to reach the goal of 1 Million Dollars that was set in 1997. It may be noted that the concept of CTF was presented at the Detroit Convention in the year 1997, and the Convention was seen as the best way to build the sense of belonging among all Veerashaivas. It was strongly felt that the Convention registration cost be kept reasonable to make affordable for all Veerashaivas to attend. At the same time, it was agreed that the Conventions should meet some basic standard and cater comfortable facilities that can only be served by major Hotels. The basic purpose of the CTF was to raise about one million dollars and the investment returns from the fund (without touching the capital) would offset the ever escalating costs of the Convention. It was memorable and emotional in that around $320,000 was pledged during the few hours of a well-orchestrated appeal in 1997 followed by subsequent pledges totaling about $275000 or so. In every subsequent Convention for few years, time was allotted to seek pledges and collect checks for the CTF drive. The current contribution now stands at $340,608 + $1501 of 2015. The central VSNA provides 90% of the investment returns of the fund to convention organizers as the seed money. The remaining 10% is reinvested. The amounts provided to last two years’ conventions were around Nineteen Thousand Dollars. We request your tax-deductible contributions to CTF. Please send your contributions to:

Selection criteria is based on the essays written by the youth. Starting 2015, we plan to increase the scholarship amounts in various categories. Obituary Shiva Sajjan of New Jersey VSNA - New York - New Jersey Chapter
We are deeply saddened to learn the unexpected passing of one of our own VSNY-Chapter member Dr Shiva Sajjan. Shiva Sajjan was a dear friend to many of us and a great supporter of VSNA activities. He will be greatly missed but his warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit will be remembered forever. He is current VSNY Chapter BOD member for one term 2014-2015 and worked very actively with 38th VSNA Convention hosted by VSNY chapter both on stage and behind the stage. Shiva was an accomplished Bio-statistician with a Ph. D in Statistics from the University of Georgia and publications of over 70 research papers. More than these he was the simplest and nicest man one could ever meet. In interactions with him, he exemplified what it means to be a 'Sajjan' as his last name is. He would always be thinking for others back home and he was never satisfied that he had done enough. Ever sporting the smile, he was one of those who never found fault in others but all in himself. Even when he would rarely cut that joke, he would double check he didn’t hurt the person. He loved outdoors and was very devoted to Swami Aiyyappa. It is quite a coincidence that he passed away while visiting Shabari Malai at the foothills of the temple.

Justice Vijaykumar S Malimath
We are saddened to announce the passing of Nadoja Dr. Justice Vijaykumar S Malimath - father of Mrs. Nayanatara Swamy, a VSNA BOD Member. Justice V.S. Malimath was the former Chief Justice of Karnataka and Kerala High Courts, Chairman of Central Administrative Tribunal, Human Rights Commission, and current Chairman of the Karnataka Border Protection Commission. He passed away on Dec 22 2015.' V.S Malimath was born on June 12, 1929, in Hubli, and had secured first rank in LLB and a postgraduate diploma in Public International Law from the University of London in 1952. He commenced his practice in the Bombay High Court in 1952 and shifted to Bengaluru in 1956 after reorganization of the states. He was appointed Karnataka Attorney General in 1968. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in 1984, and Chief Justice of Kerala High Court in 1985. After he retired, he was appointed chairman of the Central Administrative Tribunal New Delhi 1991-94, followed by his appointment to the National Human Rights Commission in New Delhi 1994-99. As directed by the parliament he researched and produced the “Malimath Report” in 2003, to reform the Criminal Justice System in India, which recommended radical and innovative reforms to revamp the ailing criminal justice system. He cared passionately about the rule of law, human rights and victim rights. He felt too often courts delayed trials. He felt “justice delayed was justice denied" and made it part of his lifelong mission to eliminate inefficiency and bureaucracy. He was president of ‘Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha’, Mahatma Gandhi founded. This organization was planning an all-India-year-round celebration of Gandhi centenary next year. He made several contributions on the international front. He was appointed by the Secretary General of United Nations in 1996 to head a fact-finding mission to Nigeria to investigate circumstances of the trial of Ken Sarowiwa and the Ogoni Nine. His report was accepted by the United Nations, leading to the establishment of democratic rule in Nigeria. The International Commission Of Jurists Geneva and International Bar Association, London, appointed him as an international observer to oversee the referendum in Sri Lanka. The report submitted lead to the withdrawal of the proclamation by the President, and calling for fresh elections. He represented his country in International Legal and Human Rights conferences in USA, New Zealand, UK, Sweden, South Africa, Geneva, Mexico, Thailand and Spain. Some of the honors conferred upon him include:
“National Citizen Award” by the President of India for outstanding contributions to law, judiciary, and human rights -1996 “Rajyotsava Award” by the Government of Karnataka for outstanding contributions in the field of law. Honorary Doctorate in Law by Karnatak University for invaluable contributions to law reform and the judiciary “Great Son of Karnataka Award” awarded by the All India Conference of Intellectuals. “Basavashri Award” “Satya Harishchandra Award” “Nadoja” Award by the Kannada University of Hampi.

Justice Malimath was appointed Chairman of the Karnataka Border Protection Commission by the Karnataka government in June this year to provide legal counseling on the boundary dispute, and also to look into the issues and problems of the people living in the border areas, particularly in the northern parts of the State. He had been very active and relentless worker to the very last days of his life to the cause of Karnataka's interests and border protection. Justice V.S. Malimath visited U.S. several times on his various assignments. He exuded charm and captivated gathering public or private. He always was an eloquent and inspiring speaker. He is known for his passion, honesty, integrity, intolerance of injustice, outspoken and uncompromising in his ideals in private and public life. He leaves a large family behind which includes his daughter Nayantara Swamy and son in law Dr. Mallikarjuna Swamy (Florida), daughters Dr. Manjula Salimath (Texas), Ragini Umesh, Chandana Kotur, and son Ravi Malimath a sitting Karnataka High court judge in Bengaluru. His nephews include Deepak and Nandan Kenkeremath, sons of late sister Vimala Channabasappa, Washington DC. In appreciation for all his contributions and service, Nadoja Dr. Justice V.S. Malimath was honored with a Full State Burial, draped with the National Flag, State band playing the National Anthem, a guard of honor and a 21 gun salute. Only the third civilian to be bestowed that honor in state history. This was followed by a traditional Veerashiava ceremony on Dec 24 2015. On January 5th the High Court of Karnataka Held a Full Court Reference in his honor, addressed by the Chairman of the State Bar Council, and the Chief Justice. The proceedings in Courts of Karnataka were delayed for an hour in mourning.
