Dive into a variety of summer music programs for all ages and stages at Canada’s most exciting music school. Begin a lifetime engagement with music or deepen skills already acquired in engaging programs for children as young as 3yrs old to adult learners. In addition to early childhood and youth programs and jazz and classical music offerings for all ages, this summer marks the start of the new Chinese traditional music program, with introductory summer courses that can be continued in the fall of 2016, taught by a superb faculty of artists and teachers of traditional Chinese instruments. All programs are led by highly-trained, committed and passionate teachers, who are dedicated to helping you or your child get the most out of the summer months in a fun and engaging way. Meet the Orchestra Music Camp

Recommended for: Children 3–8yrs old (will be grouped by age). No previous musical experience required. Instructors: Laura Hasthorpe CST, Music; Melanie Barker, Visual Arts; Stephanie Swinnard, Drama Fee: $210 per week Integrating music, movement and visual art, children learn to express themselves using Colourstrings educational principles. They will build core musical skills as they become intrepid ‘explorers’ on an adventure weaving singing, movement, percussion, games, drama and art into a traditional story from around the world, with a short performance on the last day. Each week will focus on a different world region, so participants can either attend a single week, or both weeks.
Children should bring a drink and snacks and dress appropriately to get messy or bring art clothes.

Instructors: Ross Curran, Holly Duff Fee: $210 per week Combining music, movement, drama and speech in the time-tested ‘Orff Approach’ to music education, this class incorporates learning music into a child’s natural world of play. Children in the early grades will learn music fundamentals and instrumental playing through musical games and activities. An ‘instrument of the day’ gives kids an up-close-and personal experience of selected instruments of the orchestra.
Children should bring a water bottle, snack and dress appropriately for movement and art activities. Minimum enrollment required.

Jul 18-22, Mon-Fri 9am-12pm (students accompanied by a parent are invited to stay from 12:30pm until 2pm daily, to hear lunchtime jam sessions and jazz faculty performances.)
Recommended for: Children age 10-14yrs old, who play an instrument, sing, or who just love music! Those who play an instrument are encouraged to bring it. No previous jazz experience required. Instructors: Bill Clark and guest jazz faculty instructors Fee: $210 Designed for kids who like to make up their own music, this program leads kids through guided improvisation in the language of jazz, through playing, improvising and having fun together. Participants will learn the secrets of “getting into the groove” and creating music on the spot, and will work together to create a special piece to be shared in a lunchtime concert on the final day.

Instructors: Dr. Gloria Wong (zheng, dizi); Nicole Li (erhu) and additional Chinese Music Program faculty Fee: $250 Introducing the enchanting world of the Chinese orchestra, this program includes group lessons on erhu, zheng, dizi and percussion instruments, visual and audio presentations, Chinese origin stories and a calligraphy art project. The week of musical discovery will culminate in a short performance paired with an exhibit of the children’s calligraphy.

If your child is curious about the cello, this fun 5-day course will get them started the right way under the guidance of an experienced instructor in a group setting. Beginners will learn the basic techniques of holding and playing the instrument and engage in fun musical games and activities. Parents are encouraged to observe the classes, and attend an informal sharing of the week’s achievements on the last day.

Instructors: Cheryl Dennett CST, Music; Melanie Barker, Visual Arts Fee: $225 Using body percussion, voices, traditional instruments (pitched and un-pitched) and by creating their own hand-made instruments, children will unleash their ‘inner percussionists’! Essential musical concepts of playing together in a group, keeping a steady beat, exploring rhythms, percussion technique and more will be learned through games, songs and stories, exploring the world of rhythmic possibilities that is all around us.
Children should bring a snack and dress in play clothes. Minimum enrollment required.
2016 SUMMER PROGRAM
Parent and Child Piano lessons 30 or 60min weekly lessons during July AND/OR August. Sat 10am-12pm OR Wed 5-7pm Recommended for: Children 4-8yrs old with their parents. Absolute beginner level. Instructors: Various Fee: $150/$300 (4-lesson package of 30min or 60min lessons) Make learning to make music a family affair. These specially-designed lessons give children and parents a chance to learn together, equipping parents with the basic tools to help children in their daily practice and providing a musical bond that will last a lifetime.

RCM grade 3-6 / Suzuki Bk. 2-5 Instructors: Cicely Nelson (violin); Robin Copas (cello) Fee: $275 Adult amateur string players can improve their skills in this relaxed evening “camp�, playing in duos, trios or larger chamber groups, rehearsing specially-arranged music tailored to each level, all in an encouraging and engaging environment. Each week will have a group instrumental technique class and coached rehearsals. There will be an informal performance on the last day to share with friends and family.

Recommended for: Adults (16yrs+) with at least 1yr guitar experience. Basic note reading is an asset but not required. Must have own classical / acoustic guitar with nylon strings. Instructors: Stanton Jack with guest artist Bill Coon Fee: $250 Acoustic guitarists come together to learn, perform, and play in this supportive guitar ensemble for beginner to intermediate guitarists, covering a variety of different styles and techniques from across the world. The workshop includes a special group session with acclaimed jazz guitarist Bill Coon, and ends with a group performance for friends and family in Pyatt Hall.

Recommended for: Adult amateur and high school instrumentalists and vocalists: Bass, guitar, drums, piano, voice, & brass / woodwinds. Should have at least 2 years’ experience on your instrument. Instructors: Jodi Proznick, Bass; Miles Black, Piano; Bill Coon, Guitar; Kelly Proznick, Vocals; Steve Maddock, Vocals; Jesse Cahill, Drums; Rod Murray, Kent Wallace, Brass; Steve Kaldestad, Woodwinds & Big Band Fee: $550 per week Find your groove and polish your chops in these exuberant 5-day Jazz Workshops under the guidance of Canada’s ‘A-list’ of jazz players and instructors. All participants take part in a combo, play in the big band, participate in masterclasses for your instrument or voice, delve into practical jazz theory and history and hear how the ‘pros’ do it in a daily faculty performance. Sessions on unlocking your best performance include banishing performance anxiety and freeing yourself to feel the physicality of Jazz. Students may attend one or both sessions. Each session ends with a Friday evening performance at beautiful Pyatt Hall featuring all combos and faculty. NEW THIS YEAR: The workshops include special sessions on Afro-Cuban Rhythms (Week 1) and New Orleans Jazz (Week 2)

Aug 8-25 ZHENG: Mon & Wed, 6:30-8pm ERHU: Tue & Thu 10-11:30am Recommended for: Adults with an interest in learning Chinese traditional music. No experience required. Instructors: Min Lin (Zheng); Yun Song (Erhu) Fee: $295 Explore one or both of these fascinating Chinese instruments in a sociable and supportive environment of introductory group lessons for adults. Basic concepts will be covered including: how to tune the instrument, posture and playing techniques, introduction to cipher notation (Chinese music notation), and learning repertoire by ear. There will be an informal presentation at the end of the course to share and celebrate student achievement.

2016 SUMMER PROGRAM
Songs of Summer - Voice Intensive Aug 22-26 AND/OR Aug 29-Sep 2 Mon-Fri 1-9pm (create your own flexible schedule) Recommended for: Adults and ages 13+. Students must bring two prepared songs to work on for each session. Instructors: Diane King; Kevin Zakresky. Workshops led by Rena Sharon, Alan Corbishley, Helen Hall, Jodi Proznick and Andy Toth Fee: $450 per week. Participants signing up for both weeks receive a $100 discount ($400 per week) Build singing technique and vocal health in different song styles with one or both of these concentrated vocal training courses. Both courses include private instruction and classes with master teacher Diane King, coaching and ensemble work with conductor Kevin Zakresky, and group activities with a variety of guest artists. Week 1 - Anything Goes - Songs from the Great American Songbook This session explores the great standards that delight singers and audiences alike. The works of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and others will form the backdrop for classes on vocal projection, stage presence, improvisation and more. Week 2 - Bel Canto - Art Song, Oratorio, and Opera An in-depth study of classical vocal repertoire including art song, oratoria and opera. Participants will improve diction, vocal production and will delve deeply into texts and historical content.

REGISTRATION AND SCHOOL POLICIES Registration All registrations will be on a first-come-first-served basis. A student will be registered only when fees for a summer session have been received in full. All summer sessions have minimum enrollment requirements which must be met in order for the class to take place. If you have registered for a class that does not meet its minimum enrollment, you will be notified at least two weeks ahead of the scheduled date and any fees paid will be fully refunded. All instructors are subject to change. Payment Payment may be made by Cash, Cheque, Credit or Interac. Withdrawals & Refunds Capacity at summer sessions is limited. Your tuition payment guarantees your spot. If you need to withdraw after registering, if another student is waiting to take your place, your tuition fee will be refunded. If another student cannot take the spot, then fees paid will be transferred to a School credit, for your use in the following term or year. No credits will be issued if a student withdraws from an activity less than one week before the start date.
