Summer is a special time to try something new, continue to build skills and make friends through making music. Camps and sessions in Classical Music, Jazz and World Music offer a variety of ways to make your summer musically memorable this year. Our programs are led by highly-trained, committed and passionate teachers, who are dedicated to helping you or your child get the most out of the summer months in a fun and engaging way. Jazz It Up!

July 10-14 OR August 21-25 Mon-Fri 10:30am-12pm (July only; for 5-7yrs old) OR 1-2:30pm (July: for 7-9yrs old; August: for 5-7yrs old)

July 17-21 AND/OR July 24-28 Mon-Fri 9am-12pm

Recommended for: Children ages 5-9yrs old interested in beginning the violin. No previous musical experience necessary. Instructors: Hannah Chung (July camps); Ruth Huang (August camp) Fee: $165

Recommended for: Children ages 7-13yrs old (Week 1: for 7-10yrs; Week 2: for 11-13yrs), who play an instrument, sing, or who just love music! Those who play an instrument are encouraged to bring it. No previous jazz experience required. Instructors: Bill Clark and guest jazz faculty instructors Fee: $210 per week

If your child would like to try out the violin, these introductory classes will give him or her a solid foundation to explore this instrument. Beginners will learn the basic techniques of holding and playing the violin and engage in fun musical games and activities. Parents are strongly encouraged to observe the classes, and attend an informal sharing of the week’s achievements on the last day.

Violins can be rented through the VSO School of Music for $10 for the week. Minimum enrollment required.

(students accompanied by a parent are invited to stay from 12pm until 2pm daily, to hear lunchtime jam sessions and jazz faculty performances.)

Designed for kids who like to make up their own music, this program leads kids through guided improvisation in the language of jazz, through playing, improvising and having fun together. Participants will learn the secrets of “getting into the groove” and creating music on the spot, and will work together to create a special piece to be shared with their friends in the Jazz Workshops, in a lunchtime concert on the final day.

FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES The Magical World of Chinese Instruments July 31 – August 4 Mon-Fri 2:30-5pm Recommended for: Children ages 7-12yrs old. No musical experience required. Instructors: Dr. Gloria Wong (zheng, percussion); Yun Song (erhu) Fee: $250

Meet the Cello August 8-12 Tue-Sat 11am-12:30pm (for 6-8yrs old) OR 2-3:30pm (for 8-10yrs old) Recommended for: Children ages 6-10yrs old. No previous musical experience necessary. Children should be 6yrs old as of Jan 1, 2017. Instructor: Robin Copas Fee: $165

Introducing the enchanting world of the Chinese orchestra, this program includes group lessons on erhu, zheng, and percussion instruments, visual and audio presentations, Chinese origin stories and a calligraphy art project. The week of musical discovery will culminate in a short performance paired with an exhibit of the children’s calligraphy.

If your child is curious about the cello, this fun 5-day course will get them started the right way under the guidance of an experienced instructor in a group setting. 2017 SUMMER PROGRAM

Meet the Orchestra August 14-18 Mon-Fri 2-5pm Recommended for: Children ages 5-9yrs old. No previous musical experience required. Instructors: Ross Curran, Holly Duff Fee: $210 Combining music, movement, drama and speech in the time-tested ‘Orff Approach’ to music education, this class incorporates learning music into a child’s natural world of play. Children in the early grades will learn music fundamentals and instrumental playing through musical games and activities. An ‘instrument of the day’ gives kids an up-close-and personal experience of selected instruments of the orchestra.

Children should bring a water bottle, snack and dress appropriately for movement and art activities. Minimum enrollment required.

FOR ADULTS AND HIGH SCHOOL-AGE STUDENTS Strings in the Evenings July 6 – August 10 Thursdays, 6:30-8:45pm Recommended for: Adult Violin, Viola and Cello players, who have been taking lessons for at least 2yrs. RCM grade 3-6 / Suzuki Bk. 2-5 Instructors: Ruth Huang (violin); Robin Copas (cello) Fee: $350 Adult amateur string players can improve their technique in this relaxed evening “camp”, playing in duos, trios and larger chamber groups, rehearsing specially-arranged music tailored to each level, all in an encouraging and engaging environment. Each week will incorporate string orchestra and coached chamber rehearsals, developing all-important ensemble skills. There will be an informal performance on the last day to share with friends and family.

Minimum enrollment required.

Jazz Workshops July 17-21 AND/OR July 24-28 Mon-Fri 9am-5pm (evening concert on last day, and other optional evening activities) Recommended for: Adult amateur and high school instrumentalists and vocalists: bass, guitar, drums, piano, voice, & brass / woodwinds. Should have at least 2 years’ experience on your instrument. Instructors: Jodi Proznick (bass); Miles Black (piano); Bill Coon (guitar); Kelly Proznick, Steve Maddock (vocals); Jesse Cahill (drums); Rod Murray, Kent Wallace (brass); Steve Kaldestad (woodwinds & big band) Fee: $550 per week Find your groove and polish your chops in these exuberant 5-day Jazz Workshops under the guidance of Canada’s ‘A-list’ of jazz players and instructors. All participants take part in a combo, play in the big band, participate in masterclasses for your instrument or voice, delve into practical jazz theory and history and hear how the ‘pros’ do it in a daily faculty performance. Sessions on unlocking your best performance include banishing performance anxiety and freeing yourself to feel the physicality of Jazz. Students may attend one or both sessions. Each session ends with a Friday evening performance at beautiful Pyatt Hall featuring all combos and faculty.

2017 SUMMER PROGRAM

Summer Opera Ensemble Thursday August 10 - Sunday August 20 (no rehearsals Sunday Aug 13) 10 day program: Principal Role - rehearsals 5-9pm each day, plus 4hrs of individual instruction scheduled at your convenience Chorus Member - rehearsals 6:30-9pm each day Recommended for: Singers age 16yrs+ and adult. Participants seeking principal roles should be taking regular private vocal instruction and be able to read music. Chorus members should have some experience of ensemble / choral singing. Instructors: Diane King; Kevin Zakresky; Kathy Bjorseth; plus special guest workshop leaders Fee: Principal role - $975 Chorus member - $375 In this exciting new vocal intensive, participants will study, stage, and perform Puccini’s timeless one-act opera Suor Angelica, and other staged opera scenes. Guided by the experienced VSOSoM vocal faculty and specialist workshop and masterclass artists, students will develop vocal technique, stagecraft, movement, and ensemble skills while working towards two performances of the opera in the acoustically-excellent Pyatt Hall on the final Sunday. Participants can choose to be a chorus member, or audition for a principal role. All involved will experience the thrill of being part of an opera.

Only those seeking a principal role need to audition. Upload your audition video by July 1 (see www.vsoschoolofmusic.ca for details) or contact us to schedule an in-person placement hearing. Minimum enrollment required.

REGISTRATION AND SCHOOL POLICIES Registration All registrations will be on a first-come-first-served basis. A student will be registered only when fees for a summer session have been received in full. All summer sessions have minimum enrollment requirements which must be met in order for the class to take place. If you have registered for a class that does not meet its minimum enrollment, you will be notified at least two weeks ahead of the scheduled date and any fees paid will be fully refunded. All instructors are subject to change. Payment Payment may be made by Cash, Cheque, Credit or Interac. Withdrawals & Refunds Capacity at summer sessions is limited. Your tuition payment guarantees your spot. If you need to withdraw after registering, if another student is waiting to take your place, your tuition fee will be refunded. If another student cannot take the spot, then fees paid will be transferred to a School credit, for your use in the following term or year. No credits will be issued if a student withdraws from an activity less than two weeks before the start date. The entrance to the parkade is directly beneath the large red square window, on Seymour Street. An elevator can then be taken directly up to the School. There is additional parking located directly across the street, as well as parking meters along Seymour Street. Transit The VSO School of Music is conveniently located within easy walking distance from Canada Line, Expo Line and Millennium Line Skytrain Stations. Numerous buses run on Seymour and Granville Streets (4, 6, 7, 10, 14, 16, 17, 50, N9, N10 and N17).
