Introduction It has been a challenging and narrowed view point that architecture students are only interested in working with buildings. In this brief, it shows the opposite that we are also interested and capable in applying our spatial knowledge to other seemingly related field as well as the fashion industry. This brief brought us to discover the new territory of fashion show design which involves a lot of artistic understanding of the brand identity as well as a highly conceptual work behind the collection which INDA students has always been passionated about. This particular brief for kloset fashion show for fashion field trip autumn winter 2012 at Royal turf club of Thailand under royal patronage, ask us to design the actual runway which will transform the existing badminton court into a runway walk, various designed props to be used on the runway bu kloset models as well as the decoration to the overall runway. It’s very exciting and refreshing experience to work with the actual client/brand and to know that your design could possibly be implemented and used in the actual site. In this case a strange site unfamiliar by even the expert of fashion show organizer, the high ceiling wooden floor badminton court. This process required a lot of conceptual thinking with is highly embeded into the work of these fashion designers as well as the pragmatism that went on into the actual implementation and planning of the events in which various things need to fit together under a coherent concept. Through this kloset project review, we will take you through different stages of this exciting journey from the brand overview, costumers requirements, site documentation and analysis all the way to the actual design phase and the implementations as well as the actual fashion show day.

KLOSET Project Review

KlOSET DESIGN ELEMENT This is Kloset autumn winter 2012 collection designed by Kloset design team : lead by Maika Rungkritya and Nat Mangkang.

The element inspired by "Super Nova"and the astronomical event about stella explosion that is more energetic than a nova. Supernova are extermely luminous and cause a burst of radiation that often briefly outshines entire galaxy. Kloset team creates a story based on this super phenomenon with a twist of oriental glimpse which in turn affects on the collection's prints called "Blossom Bang","Star Ball:, "Woof Samurai" as well as "Woof Spectrum" prints reflected by the imagination of "Kloset Rangers" in a Mod style also play a strong character in the collection. Main fabrics used through the collections are Gold Lurex Silk Chiffon, Crinkle printed polysdter blends and cotton. Patchwork and handwork are mostly seen in the collection. Main colors are Beige,Purple,Mustard Yellow, Dry Chilli Red.

SITE ANALYSIS & LIMITATION

The core concept of the 2nd Fashion Feild trip Autumn Winter 2012 is to bring attention to places where fashion show has never took place before and to make people feel that they are travelling to their vacation desination. It was important for the designers to the auduience out from the generic shopping mall context, where fashion show is normally took place. For this site, the designers are searching for an unique location in Bangkok in an attempt to raise awareness to the people that there are other interesting place to spend their leisure time, rather than a mall. They finally found their suitable site. It is a badminton court at the Royal truf club of Thailand under Royal Patronage. It is almost a hudred yearolds colonial building style. It is a single story buidling, painted white. We noticed that the facade is intergated the Thai style window with the modern material, concrete. We can see the potential of intreagting the facade as part of the design inwhich the normal fashion event would simply cover things with black frabic. Since the site is a badminton court, which the wooden floor of the badminton court needed to be protected from shoes and heels. This is the first limitation in to the challenge us for layouting and programming the space.

:> As it is a old buidling, where the construction plan is lost. The event organiser can not relied on the existing structure which are exoskleton structure where the interior has no cloumns in inside the space. Thus, they had to construct a self support structure for sport lights, porjectors and temporal ait conditioner. To protect the wooden floor the black carpet has been covered the space.

As initial task for the assignment was to plan out the circulation for both models and the audience, the atmoshpere, light quality, the backstage for the models and as well as plan put the sponsor booth. We started with the site documentation, at the badminton court at the very early stage of the project. During this process, we had relied both advantages and downside of this site.

According to the breif stated that they want the catwalk to be grand, linear and to be on ground level, meaning that they did not want to elevated the platform of the model. Therefore, the first proposal we proposed a very simple linear catwalk, and put the sitting area in the middle of the walkway, to make a audience as part of the design and. For the second proposal, we want to embrace the Kloset logo which is butterfly and attempt to map the model walking movement with

GRAPHICS &MULTIMEDIA:MOODBOARD

Our first step is to produce moodboards for the designers suggesting and conveying our concept ideas of how the Teaser and the backdrop will be carry out. We decide our central theme will be a series of geometric shapes and pattern that are dynamic. This is to convey the notion of the collection concept: the space and supernova. The moodboards convey out the idea of 60’s space theme while maintaining KLOSET brand identity which is very feminine by the use of colours and patterns.

GRAPHICS &MULTIMEDIA:TEASER In proposing a teaser for KLOSET, we are introduced to the techniqueof the kaleidoscope effect from moddboard and the backdrop design. The idea was to integrate the logo of the brand and successfully convey out the brand indentity. We use Adobe After Effects to test out and implement our ideas.

Our final product contains the identity of both the brand and the collection by the use of the butteflt and the collection’s graphics as the background.

The idea is the story of 2 butterflies which are chasing each other around untill one flies away from the screen. The butterfly that is left turns into the KLOSET brand logo.

The designer’s respoded to the outcome with suggestion to further enhance the brand identity by the use of the brand mascot, the poodle and buttefly.

GRAPHICS &MULTIMEDIA:BACKDROP

The proposal of the backdrop design for the fashion show developed from the ideas presented on the moodboards of space and supernova. We both use the designer’s graphics and our own graphics to use in the stop motion video effect which is done by making a series of seperate pictures and combining them to provide a smooth transition from one form to another. Due to time constraints, we were not able to carry out the backdrop scheme.

We use the existing graphic in the collection and cut, scale, rotate and repeat them differently in each to create series of rapidly changing geometric shapes.

Implementation process

The implementation of the props to be used by kloset model during fashion show is based on the brand’s original concept of “supernova”. It’s based on the idea that our planet earth is about to become extinct due to the threat from the harmful human activities. A group of poodle superheroes is on the mission to rescue our planet earth from extinction, therefore created as a narrative and become the brand’s key visual. The notion of poodle as superheroes is created based on the concept of “myth” and mythical creatures to save the earth. In this case, the mythical creatures is being challenged by using a conventional household dogs, a poodle, and transformed them into a poodle ranger with sword and super power.

KLOSET Project Review

Source of Inspiration The actual implementation according to the brand’s concept of supernova is inspired by the brand’s initial concept themselves. From this initial concept we were looking into star formations and other outer space phenomenon. We found that the star formations and how its movement is very interesting in term of it’s complexity in dynamism. This dynamic seems suited to the brief that this prop needed to be worn by kloset models during the fashion show as the models as well as the overall atmosphere of the fashion show will be filled with movements, rhythm and speed. From this star formations research, we were looking into one spacific kind of movement which resulted in the device called, a Gyroscope. A gyroscope is a device for measuring or maintaining orientation, based on the principles of angular momentum.Mechanically, a gyroscope is a spinning wheel or disk in which the axle is free to assume any orientation. Although this orientation does not remain

fixed, it changes in response to an external torque much less and in a different direction than it would without the large angular momentum associated with the disk’s high rate of spin and moment of inertia.

Gyroscope, the moving disc. Respond to brand’s identity.

We were imagining this device to be worn by the models and its spinning movements will attracts people attention as to what the brand’s collection stands for.

Gyroscope DIY Templates The gyroscope Do it your self templates serves as an easy way to construct this prop. By simply follow the specifications illustrated on the templates you can easily create a gyroscopic hat !. The actual material consists of, charnoi 1.6mm, paperclips, glue, pilers, scissors, stanley knife, ruler and pencil.

EXECUTION PHASE During the design execution phase, we were able to create 8 pieces of gyroscopic hat. This took us 4 hours with all the glittering applied. Ready to be used ! Mew is inspecting the finished product to see if there is a space where the glitter is not applied.

Amanda and mew testing out the gyroscopic hat to see if it’s working as it supposed to or not. The result is great !. It’s finally create some movements.

The overall process took about 4 hours, we were able to create 8 pieces.

Amanda is trying to glitter it all out ! by glue spraying the thing and powder them up with glitters.

 See pictures below for our finished product be used in the actual kloset fashion field trip show 2012.The feedback was great. The modia as well as the brand loved it. It was very popular also very photogenic.

Conclusion

During the 4 months time period of the project, we have experienced a lot in terms of real life working conditions such as team work and dealing with people from other sectors. As students of Architecture, we are not limited to designing houses and buildings but now be able to explore different aspect of design. Aside from the chance to design and show our work to the public, we also learn how to deal with real life limitations and constraints such as time and budget which we might not be able to experience in our years of schooling. Along the process, we have encounter challenges and disputes but learnt to deal and compromise with each other. Our main challenge was dealing with time where we have to balance our existing university work load with this

project which limits us as we might not be able to produce work to our full potential. However, we all have completed both workload in time and in a good standard. Furthermore, this project gives us the opportunity to meet with professionals in the field of fashion design and event management to enhance and increase our connection and scope of design work.
