THE SEMPORNA BAJAU LAUT
The sea gypsies are true masters of the sea, having roamed the waters of the Coral Triangle between Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia for many generations. Even today, a sizeable population still live in wooden houseboats or stilt huts built atop coral reefs near Semporna’s islands. A great number have given up their nomadic lifestyle to settle permanently on land in search of greater stability. These people are known as the Bajau Darat.Despite this, many still retain their gypsy-esque lifestyle and the number of Bajau Laut living around Semporna is estimated to be upwards of 3000.

COASTLINE ECOSYSTEM / MANGROVE FOREST
LOCATION OF MANGROVE WITHIN SEMPORNA the mangroove trees at semporna are segregated o two categories, Undisturbed and disturbed. The site kampung bangau bangau is labelled as undisturbed, but deforestation has ocurred in relations to the communities rise of population and use of mangrove trees as stilt construction for thier elevated structures. here are the list of the undisturbed zones , sungai siplit , sum- sum, tong tatabataba, hamapalan and sungai gajah.
Adventages of mangrove trees sabah has the largest arae of mangroves of any state in malaysia, with over 232,000 hectares, mianly along sabah's esat and southeast coat, most are protected as class V mangrove forest reserve, or as class 1 protected or class VI vrigin jungle forest reserve. however some critical area , for example on sabah's west coat, remain unprotected. despite itrs smelly reputation , a mangrove forest is a very dynamic and highly productive ecosystem. it not only plays multiple ecological functions essential to its surrounding habitats, but is also an important resource for coastal communities.

ECONOMY OF COASTLINE COMMUNITIES The terms of asset ownership, the lepa-lepa os tilt house as a mean of shelter. The lepalepa is also a mean to thier source of income because it is the vessel for their fishing activities and transport to sell their fishes. A family normally has three to seven children , depnding on the years of marriage. Bajau laut people spent RM500-RM600, RM1000 , RM2000 and RM3000 on a lepa, which is often either made by themselves or hire other to build for them.
semporna was historically an area in which lowland hardwoods , ideal for boat construction, were relatively plentiful the availability of wood, not only bajau laut but also communities of share-dweling sama, historically produced lepa and indeed, other kinds of vessels for trade. in the past, trees were felled mainly in the coastal lowland, and using high tides the logs were floated to the sea by way of small river and estuarine streams. they were then towed to the village or boat mooring site where the feller worked them into boat sections amd planks .
ECONOMY OF COASTLINE COMMUNITIES MANGROVE TREE Board are made from planks and are then curved by bending and fitted edge to edge with wooden dowels (pasok) made usually of mangrove wood
TOOL KIT tool kit used in boat construction consists of an adze (patuk) with a detachable steel blade that can be rotated for different cutting angles, a knife ( bari ) a wooden mallet palu and a brace and bit
The Lepa-Lepa is made out of ubar suluk (red seraya) wood found on the islands. No other wood can be used to make this boat.
THE BOAT CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
lepa cannot be built in less than three or four months, and some are known to have taken well over a year to complete. The Lepa-Lepa generally measures 25 feet in length and six feet wide. The distinctive design of Lepa-Lepa is shaped to mimic the figure of a fish.
These decisions are influenced by the availability of wood, particularly for the bow, stern, and keel sections. lepa varied greatly in length from 7 to 12 metres (the average was 8.5 metres) and from 1.5 to 1.9 metres beam. Beam is relatively constant, but length is notably variable. The lepa draft has an average of some 0.6 metre. Construction begins by first shaping the keel section (teddas), which is fashioned from a single piece of wood
by joining it with the bow and stern sections. The latter are called tuja’ and tuja’ buli’, respectively, and consist of identical left andright sections.

IN MY EXPERIENCE
ABOUT bajau laut The quantity and quality of the carving and painting on boats vary considerably. It is quite likely that most boats had more painting when they were new. I never saw anyone repainting an old boat, and I frequently saw boats, especially lipa, with bands of painting almost totally faded away. Virtually alllipa have carvings at the prow and stern and on the sa'am, but the quality of it varies considerably.
bajau laut Although most djenging have carving on both the bow and stern, some have it only on the bow, and some have none at all. The pilang usually has carving at the prow and at least one line of carving the length of the hull on both sides.
