Funding the future

A message from Ben J. Davenport Jr., Chairman of the Virginia Tech Foundation Board In his October 2014 installation speech Virginia Tech President Timothy D. Sands pointed out that, “The greatness of this university today is the product of bold vision and investment of multiple generations.” He called upon our entire university community to envision Virginia Tech at its 175th anniversary and take steps now to ensure our school will be even greater then. As someone who would turn 105 the year that anniversary comes, in 2047, I may not see it. But I’m still inspired by the call to action. One of the great pleasures of giving back to my university through philanthropy and by serving on the Virginia Tech Foundation Board is knowing that my actions today can make a difference well into the future. That dynamic is reflected in this report’s feature story, which illustrates how endowed giving from many years ago continues to make a difference. Ben J. Davenport Jr.

Such stories show the impact of our endowment at an individual level, and there are literally thousands of them worth telling each year. At the institutional level, meanwhile, our endowment’s importance cannot be overstated. We must increase our endowment dramatically over the next several years in order to maintain our university’s impressive momentum. The numbers back this up. The market value of our endowment stood at $817.8 million as of June 30, 2015. That is the largest it has ever been, but is smaller than the endowments at many other top-tier schools. According to the latest comparison figures available from the National Association of College and University Business Officers, which reflect fiscal year 2013-2014: the value of our endowment was 115th largest in absolute dollar terms among 851 U.S. and Canadian institutions tracked; our endowment per student was eighth largest among public schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference; and at least four of Virginia’s public universities—the College of William and Mary, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Military Institute—had larger endowments per student. With state support for higher education having eroded nationwide, including in Virginia, top-tier universities need the financial stability and flexibility that large endowments provide. This is particularly the case at a school like ours, due to the broad scope of our land-grant mission. We must remain accessible to students from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds, conduct research that matters, and make a difference not just on our campus, but in communities around the world. At the Virginia Tech Foundation, we strive to help our university embody what a landgrant institution can be. And we embrace our new president’s call to help Virginia Tech advance toward 2047 on a solid financial footing, shored up by our growing endowment.

Looking forward with enthusiasm A message from John E. Dooley, CEO and Secretary-Treasurer

One of many highlights of an exciting fiscal year for the Virginia Tech Foundation came in April. We celebrated the 20th anniversary of the reopening of the Hotel Roanoke, which along with its attached conference center has injected $616 million into Roanoke’s economy since 1995. It was just cause for celebration. Yet as much as I and other stakeholders in the hotel enjoyed marking that anniversary, we were equally excited by another statistic related to the facility. The hotel’s occupancy rate for the fiscal year was 83.3 percent—its highest level since the reopening. Occasions such as major anniversaries often lead us not only to look back on our progress, but to take stock of where we stand today and look forward to where we hope to be years from now. John E. Dooley

Something similar happens when a new leader takes over an organization, as was the case at Virginia Tech this past fiscal year. Timothy D. Sands’ formal installation ceremony in October was a cause for celebration, but also a call to action as the president outlined an ambitious vision for what our university can become. At the Virginia Tech Foundation, we look forward to working closely with President Sands to help our university realize its tremendous potential. Within this annual report are many examples of how we are doing so already. In the years to come, there are certain to be many more. Whether it was hosting the first Tech Entrepreneurship Conference, posting a 4.4 percent return on our endowment portfolio to outperform our benchmark by a large margin, or even building a new facility to house the university’s dairy herd, we had a busy, effective fiscal year, as you will see in the pages that follow. On campus, around the commonwealth, and even abroad, the Virginia Tech Foundation works to advance the university in numerous ways. We do this by managing private funds donated in support of Virginia Tech and through other initiatives that promote the growth, progress, and well-being of the university. It’s a broad mission, but one that gave us many opportunities for success in fiscal year 2014-2015. We look forward to many additional successes, and celebrations, in the years to come.

A FOUNDATION FOR EXCELLENCE The Virginia Tech Foundation Endowment, containing more than 3,200 funds, had a market value of nearly

$817.8 million at the close of fiscal year 2014-2015. Held and managed by the Virginia Tech Foundation Inc. on

behalf of Virginia Tech, it provides millions each year to

support the university’s multifaceted land-grant mission, which includes teaching, research, and outreach, including the examples that follow.

Meanwhile not far away, in Lee Hall, a new generation of engineering students, including ones attracted to Virginia Tech by scholarships, develop friendships as well as knowledge. Both those life-changing scholarships and that potentially industry-changing research are part of the powerful legacy of one man: John Lee Pratt, whose estate gift from 40 years ago continues to fuel excellence today. Pratt, a native of Virginia’s King George County, was a chemical engineer for some of America’s largest companies, but he always maintained the love of agriculture he developed growing up on a farm, and he continued to maintain cows of his own as an adult. In the 1940s, when one of his cows became sick, Pratt came to believe its diet was a factor. He discussed the importance of understanding nutritional biochemistry with Harold Young, the director of the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station. Inspired by the discussion, Young recruited a nutritional biochemist named Ruben Engel to what was then Virginia Continued on page 15

A profound impact in all areas More than 3,200 endowed funds constitute the Virginia Tech Foundation Endowment, which provides millions to support students, research, and outreach at Virginia Tech each year. Three examples of how this type of permanent support made a difference in fiscal year 2014-2015 follow. Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Cayelan Carey and a team of students worked with the Western Virginia Water Authority to improve water quality at Falling Creek Reservoir. Carey is a member of Virginia Tech’s Ecosystem Research Group, which receives support from the Mary and George Schaeffer Stream Team Excellence Fund.

Located in Critz, Virginia, the Virginia Tech Foundation-owned Reynolds Homestead recorded more than 19,000 encounters with area residents and visitors of all ages during 2014-2015. That included students from Bassett High School who participated in teambuilding exercises on the homestead’s brandnew challenge course. The homestead property was donated to Virginia Tech, and its operations are supported, in part, by endowments.

Polytechnic Institute. Engel became the first head of the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition, which was founded in 1952. Shortly thereafter, Pratt donated $100,000, and then $150,000 more, to support the department’s work. After Pratt died in 1975, his estate gave nearly $11 million to Virginia Tech. The funds were split between the College of Engineering and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and their combined market value had grown to over $45.4 million as of June 30, 2015. Forty years after Pratt’s death, his generosity continues to support essential research and provide valuable opportunities for students and faculty, illustrating the permanent, powerful impact of endowments. That endowed support includes funding for research that Wong and his students are doing in poultry nutrition and infectious diseases. “The legacy and funding that John Lee Pratt left behind have a real and meaningful impact on my work every day,” said Wong, a professor of animal and poultry sciences. “So much of the research continued on page 17

Empowering the university's vision During his October 2014 installation address, Virginia Tech President Timothy D. Sands cited global competition for top employees and the need to keep higher education accessible as reasons why dramatically increasing the size of the university’s endowment is a strategic priority. Large endowments provide universities the financial flexibility to offer highly competitive salaries and generous financial aid packages.

Timothy D. Sands was installed as Virginia Tech’s 16th president on Oct. 17, 2014.

we do has been made possible by the Pratt Endowment.” “It is hard to overstate the importance or impact of this gift,” said Saied Mostaghimi, the associate dean for research and graduate studies in Wong’s college, who oversees funding from the Pratt Endowment. “From supporting undergraduate research projects to funding graduate students to paying for valuable scientific equipment, the fund has allowed us to grow the field of animal nutrition in a way that advances scientific knowledge and has a direct benefit to industry.” The Pratt Endowment’s impact on the agriculture industry is important in its own right, but Pratt’s gift is also notable for its broad scope. It has fueled not only the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, but also the College of Engineering, which in the past decade has solidified its place among nationally prominent programs, helping to distinguish Virginia Tech. Through scholarships the Pratt Endowment created, the engineering college has grown its pool of talented students and opened doors for them. continued on page 19

“The scholarship is not just money; it’s a life changer,” said Justin Yon, who received a Pratt Scholarship and lived in Lee Hall during 20142015 as a first-year student who was part of engineering’s Galileo livinglearning community. The materials science and engineering major said the experience of living alongside other engineering students and learning together was crucial for him. “I couldn’t imagine it any other way,” he said. “It allowed me not to fail.” Yon planned to serve as a sophomore mentor in the program,

helping to ensure the success of incoming students. Civil engineering major Natale Carollo also received a Pratt Scholarship and lived in the Gailileo community, where he met and befriended Yon and others. “It makes your experience better,” Carollo said of the community. “I was able to meet new people and make new friends. I absolutely love it. It helps people.” Carollo said the Pratt Scholarship was a significant factor in his decision to attend Virginia Tech, where he is pursuing his passion for engineering.

Although he did not earn a degree at Virginia Tech himself, Pratt continues to influence the university’s community in profound ways through his endowed philanthropy, which benefits agriculture and engineering—two areas he was passionate about. Thanks to him, and the many other generous people who have helped endow funds over the years, Virginia Tech has been able to make a far greater impact on society, and in the lives of those served by the university, than it could have done otherwise.

Hotel Roanoke April 2015 marked the 20th anniversary of the re-opening of the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center. According to a report by the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission, the overall economic impact of the hotel was more than $616 million over the past two decades. “One of the smartest decisions the city ever made was to agree to partner with Virginia Tech to breathe new life into this historic landmark while, at the same time, creating a new venue to draw conferences and events from across the commonwealth to our city,” Roanoke City Manager Chris Morrill has said. “This venture has more than proven its value in boosting the economic success of our downtown and the Roanoke area as a whole, and in building a stronger working relationship with Virginia Tech.” For fiscal year 2014-2015, hotel occupancy was 83.3 percent, a record since the re-opening. Total revenues for the year were nearly $21.7 million. The facility recorded its 11th Pride Award, a recognition for customer-service scores ranking among the top five hotels within the DoubleTree by Hilton brand. The hotel also won its fourth Connie Award, DoubleTree’s highest honor, and was awarded a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.

infrastructure upgrade that will deliver Internet connectivity at 10-times faster speed. In November the center hosted the first Tech Entrepreneurship Conference, bringing together students, alumni, faculty, and investors from around the nation to learn more about Virginia Tech’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Meanwhile, VT KnowledgeWorks continued to assist more than 60 companies, and CRC President and CEO Joe Meredith was presented the Association of University Research Parks’ 2014 Career Achievement Award.

North End North End continues to be a thriving, mixed-use development located on the edge of campus. Nestled between Prices Fork Road, Turner Street, and Main Street, the property has attracted the attention of national and regional retailers while continuing to provide opportunities for local businesses such as Tivon Salon & Spa, New Image Barber Shop, and Next Door Bake Shop. Fiscal year 2014-2015 saw the completion of signage renovations and the creation of both a linear park along

Gilbert Street and a plaza area between 400 and 460 Turner Street. These pedestrian-friendly enhancements increased the curb appeal of North End, helping its efforts to be an attractive location for shopping, dining, and enjoyment. Those options grew with the opening of Wicked Taco in January. In addition, Carilion expanded its presence by opening a new walk-in clinic. Continued marketing helped increase retail occupancy from 85 percent to 94 percent, which is expected to generate an additional $1.5 million in revenue over the next seven years.

Dairy Complex At the request of the university, the Virginia Tech Foundation completed construction of new dairy instructional facilities, located on the Kentland Farm property. The foundation also handled design and financing for the project. The relocation is part of sweeping changes to the south entrance to the university and the surrounding area, including the extension of the Virginia Tech Montgomery Executive Airport runway and the relocation of the Southgate Drive-Route 460 interchange.

The new dairy facilities were built on 32 acres and will provide for approximately 500 cows, 232 of which make up the university’s milking herd. The 110,000-grosssquare-foot dairy complex includes a milking parlor, administrative offices, a housing barn, a special needs barn, a commodity barn, a calf barn, a hay barn, feedstorage facilities, and manure-management facilities.

Virginia Tech Foundation Annual Report | 2015

FOUNDATION ENDOWMENT HIGHLIGHTS As of June 30, 2015, the market value of all endowments held by the Virginia Tech Foundation Inc. totaled $817.8 million. Of that total, $771.8 million was invested in the foundation’s pooled consolidated endowment fund, while $46.0 million was held separately in notes, deeds of trust, gift annuities, contributions receivable, real estate partnerships, and other miscellaneous endowed assets. The June 30 allocation exposures of the foundation’s pooled endowment fund consisted of 51.4 percent global equities, 14.3 percent real assets, 17.4 percent credit, 0.2 percent government bonds, and 16.7 percent cash and cash equivalents. The fund achieved a total return of 4.4 percent for the year ending June 30 and an annualized return of 11.2 percent over the trailing five-year period. The overriding principle of the foundation’s endowment program is that funds should be managed so that a gift today will fund a donor’s objective in perpetuity. For example, if a benefactor endows a scholarship, the money is managed with the goal of maintaining the real value of the endowment over time to keep pace with inflation. Each gift entering the consolidated endowment fund purchases units analogous to shares in a mutual fund, and a program support payout-per-unit (or dividend) is paid quarterly. In an effort to maintain the endowment’s purchasing power, the payout rate for program support is adjusted annually to reflect the change in the Consumer Price Index over the preceding calendar year. A 12-quarter average of endowment values is used to smooth out the unit values when determining if program spending

falls within the fiscal year 2015-2016 approved range of 3.1-4.6 percent. Without this moving average, funding might dramatically rise in one year, then fall drastically the next, leaving the beneficiaries of the endowments vulnerable to the volatility of the capital markets. Policy on endowment management is made by the foundation’s investment committee, whose main focus is the asset allocation of the fund and the endowment’s spending policy. Virginia Tech Foundation staff leads asset allocation decisions, the selection and retention of investment managers, and performance monitoring. Consultants are retained for operational diligence. To completely diversify its portfolio, management of the fund is allocated across more than 65 management firms offering a wide variety of asset classes and investment styles. 21

The tremendous impact of philanthropy A message from Elizabeth A. “Betsy” Flanagan, Senior Fellow for Advancement

October’s dedication of the College of Engineering’s spectacular Goodwin Hall illustrated the tremendous impact of donations on our campus and the programs it houses. That same month, the importance of philanthropy to Virginia Tech’s ongoing success also was highlighted by university President Timothy D. Sands in his installation speech. President Sands called on us to increase our endowment in dramatic fashion in order to provide an even more powerful asset for our university to draw upon in the years to come. With that in mind, and knowing the critical role that endowments play at universities today, I was happy to see that 31 percent of gift income was endowed in fiscal year 2014-2015, compared to 22 percent in 2013-2014.

Charlie Phlegar and Betsy Flanagan

Overall, University Development posted a 12 percent increase in gift income, raising more than $89.7 million in support of the university’s many colleges and programs. A majority of fundraising units increased the amounts they raised. Annual Giving generated nearly $6.7 million to set a new record, and corporate giving was up 20 percent. Fiscal 2014-2015 was a year of transition for the university, as our new president began to highlight his vision for Virginia Tech. It was also a year of change within University Development. In January, I announced my plans to step down as vice president for development and university relations, effective June 30, 2015. In February, prior to launching the search for my successor, President Sands announced the creation of the Advancement Division, integrating the work of University Development, University Relations, and Alumni Relations. I am pleased to continue working on behalf of Virginia Tech as a senior fellow for the new division. We were fortunate to find a tremendously talented fundraising leader in Charlie Phlegar, who left Cornell University to become Virginia Tech’s first vice president for advancement. Charlie is a Blacksburg native who earned two degrees from Virginia Tech, so he understands the unusually strong connection between our university and its alumni and friends. I am confident he will build upon that connection to make philanthropy an even more powerful driver of our success. Along with information on giving during the past fiscal year, the pages that follow list the names of members of our Ut Prosim Society, Caldwell Society, and Legacy Society. I am delighted to have been able to meet so many of these wonderful people over the course of my 15 years as vice president. And I am so proud of the many accomplishments that their philanthropy has made possible. All of us at Virginia Tech are incredibly grateful for their past generosity and their ongoing involvement in our institution’s success.

VIRGINIA TECH GIVING SOCIETIES Virginia Tech is proud to have some of the nation’s most loyal and enthusiastic donors, and has four giving societies to recognize them. Ut Prosim Society members have lifetime giving of $100,000 or more on an individual or joint basis. The society has four levels: Benefactor (beginning at $100,000), Senior Benefactor (beginning at $250,000), Distinguished Benefactor (beginning at $500,000), and President’s Circle ($1 million or more). Caldwell Society members have lifetime giving of $50,000 or more on an individual or joint basis. A member whose giving

Virginia Tech Philanthropy Annual Report | 2015

reaches $100,000 or more advances to the Ut Prosim Society. Legacy Society membership recognizes alumni and friends who provide for the university through estate plans or other deferred gifts. Pylon Society members have given in any amount to Virginia Tech academics for two or more consecutive fiscal years. Members of the Ut Prosim Society, Caldwell Society, and Legacy Society are listed on the following pages. The Pylon Society’s more than 13,000 members are not all listed, but membership is noted next to the names of members of the other societies who also belong to the Pylon Society.

ut prosim society Lifetime membership in the Ut Prosim Society, Virginia Tech’s most distinguished recognition society, is available, on an individual or joint basis, to alumni and friends whose lifetime giving totals $100,000 or more. In 1987, its first year, 127 household memberships were recognized as charter members. Since then, the society has grown to over 1,400 households, whose philanthropy touches almost every part of the university. The following is a list of the Ut Prosim Society members as of April 17, 2015.

The President’s Circle, the highest level of membership within the Ut Prosim Society, recognizes a select group of individuals whose exceptional contributions to Virginia Tech total $1 million or more. The President’s Circle charter members (denoted in italics below) were the first Ut Prosim Society members to be recognized for reaching this level in 2002. This select group has grown from 33 household memberships in 2002 to 105 household memberships this year.
