this spring & summer, discover beauty in all things old & new to create a celebration as unique as your love.

old soul. new heart. Not only is this issue our love letter to DIY projects, crafts, and ideas, it’s also an invitation to you, our readers, to embrace DIY as an integral part of what will make your wedding amazing. Whether I’m venturing down country roads on the hunt for antique shops or scouring local junkyards for long-forgotten

treasures, I never stop thinking about how to create something new out of something classic. This enduring love for homespun details and the reinterpretation of what’s old has helped Vermont Vows and sister WellWed magazines to evolve into the publications that they are today.

Vintage objects have a story to tell — they invite you to learn about their history and rediscover their beauty, while adding a new chapter of your own. Our “Start Your Engines” gown shoot (Page 97) is a celebration of this pairing of old and new, with exquisite modern bridal couture alongside vintage automobiles. My love for everything vintage is rooted in the belief that combining old and new can evoke a sense of timelessness — much like true love. Just as vintage cars and classic gowns never go out of style, this type of love never fades; it ages gracefully and adapts with time until, eventually, everything old is new again. Here at Vermont Vows, we have created a sanctuary for crafting and creating. Overlooking a river that once powered the historic mills of Winooski, Vermont, our office has become a place of creative energy, where simple ideas are translated into something special. Whether we’re shooting an innovative tabletop design or crafting a homemade cake topper, our office has become a place of refuge where I can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life to create oneof-a-kind items. Our creative retreat is something brides can make for themselves. A sanctuary, no matter how small, where you can put your energy into special DIY projects is the perfect way to ensure your wedding is a physical expression of your

extraordinary love. This spring and summer, as the warm rays of the sun break through lush trees and birdsong awakens the world from its winter slumber, brides-to-be can ring in the new season with a fresh yet timeless love, a love that echoes the sweet marriages of our grandparents, that only gets more valuable with time, and that ultimately becomes an heirloom so priceless, you wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Whether it be catering, linens, innkeeping, or serving up local cuisine, Connie Mendell has taken Vermont's hospitality industry by storm.

CONNIE’S ADVICE: hold on to an old ~ fashioned work ethic, whether or not you're in the wedding industry. trust me, it will serve you well. when you push your limit and go the extra mile, you'll find that it's always worth it! name: Connie Mendell business: The Linen Shop at Occasions, Occasions Catering, The Village Porch, 1824 House Inn & The barn Door restaurant Years in Business: twenty five website: occasionsvt.com

As Connie Mendell has remarked in the past, “There is never a dull moment for an entrepreneur.” Never dull is right. As the founder of four flourishing businesses, her ability to juggle so much, consequently becoming a fixture among the region’s wedding professionals, is something only a true entrepreneur could achieve. More than twenty five years ago, Connie began Occasions Catering at the same time that she opened The Village Porch, a cozy bistro and bar operated out of the Victorianera home that her husband, Dean, renovated himself. It wasn’t long before brides-to-be began to seek her advice on where to find interesting linens in the area. Jumping at the opportunity, Connie founded The Linen Shop, now offering Vermont’s largest assortment of linen rentals. More recently, the Mendell family has undertaken a new business venture: the 1824 House Inn and The Barn Door Restaurant. The restaurant boasts a menu of local farm-to-table cuisine, while the inn is welcoming and comfortable. It’s a lot to handle — but Connie wouldn’t have it any other way. 32

Come one, Come all...Step right up! The 2010 Vermont Wedding Affair was just the ticket for hundreds of local & destination couples — proving that planning a wedding can be as much fun as a day at the fair.

The ring is sparkly, you’ve said “Yes!” and you’re off on a whirlwind of planning for the big day. Chances are you’ve already spent some time thinking about who will be your wedding attendants — siblings, close friends, or other relatives near and dear to you. They’ll be your support group, errand runners, and ambassadors-at-large at your reception. But being an attendant can come with a hefty price tag; besides clothing and gifts, attendants must also pay for their own transportation. A romantic evening in Paris ending with a walk along the Seine and a picture-perfect marriage proposal sounds like a fairy tale. For Emily and Andy, however, it was simply part of their love story. The pair originally met in high school and even went to college together, but remained no more than good friends for years. Nothing romantic developed between them until well after college graduation. Andy moved to Washington, D.C., and Emily to Chicago. They remained in touch, but both were busy building lives in their new cities. Finally, in 2006, Emily ran in the Chicago Marathon, something she had mentioned to Andy several months prior. “After completing the race, I came home to find an absolutely gorgeous bouquet of flowers, which I knew could only be from one person,” she says. It was then she realized that she and Andy had the potential to be more than just good friends. They began speaking frequently and before they knew it, they were a couple. In 2008, Andy moved to Chicago so he could be closer to his love.

“Just as we were about to go under the bridge, Andy turned to me, got down on one knee, and proposed.”

In March 2009, Emily and Andy decided to travel to Paris for a vacation, eager to spend some time away and relax. On their first evening there, Andy made reservations at a restaurant he knew Emily would love, and they ventured out for a romantic meal even though both were jet-lagged. They had a wonderful time, though Emily couldn’t help but notice that Andy seemed a little distracted. “He got up three separate times during the meal — I learned later he kept checking to make sure the ring was still perfectly arranged,” she says. After they ate, Andy suggested they take a stroll along the river and over his favorite Parisian bridge. It was a perfect, crisp night and, as Emily chatted away, she again noticed Andy was strangely silent — but she didn’t have to wait long to find out why. “Just as we were about to go under the bridge, Andy turned to me, got down on one knee, and proposed,” she says. Emily was thrilled, and the pair spent the evening toasting with champagne in celebration. Andy’s father owns a gorgeous home in Barnard, Vermont, that Emily and Andy had visited many times and loved. They knew the town would be the perfect location for their wedding — a place special to them that they could share with family and friends. When it came to deciding on a color palette for the day, Emily wanted to utilize shades of yellow, gray, and green for a light, airy effect at her spring wedding. Her floral design incorporated the colors flawlessly while adding texture with bold succulent accents. The overall atmosphere

of the wedding was one of festive delight, complete with brightly colored macaroons, a picturesque outdoor setting, and unique tags, flags, and napkin rings. The colors and design were perfect for a springtime celebration in Vermont. The bride and groom also incorporated as many family traditions as possible throughout their celebration. The huppa that the couple married under, which had also been used at Andy’s aunt and uncle’s wedding, was made with tallies his grandfather had worn during his bar mitzvah. The bible verse printed on the front of the couple’s wedding programs, Ruth 1:16, had been read at Emily’s parent’s and grandparent’s weddings and inscribed on her great-grandmother’s wedding ring. The joyful springtime soirée was everything the couple could have imagined and more. As the celebration came to an end, family and friends greeted them with sparklers, perhaps Emily’s favorite part of the night. “Running under the cascading lights, surrounded by all the people you love most, is truly amazing.” Stopping for a quick kiss among the sparkling lights, the newlyweds knew their own personal fairy tale was just beginning.

When Nicole Adamidis and Bill Cummings traveled to Vienna, Austria, for a semester abroad, they knew they were about to discover new adventures. But they were also about to find something even better: true love. After meeting at the orientation for their study abroad program, Nicole and Bill became inseparable during their five months overseas. They remained just friends, however, until the following year, after they had both graduated from St. Lawrence University. Nicole had chosen to follow her career dreams, first to Colorado and then to Massachusetts, but soon found she couldn’t stand being apart from Bill. Before long, she moved to New York City, where he was living, and was reunited with her love. One morning, Nicole awoke to find Bill had left her a dress and a gift card for a spa treatment. On the card he had written, “Here is something for you to wear to dinner tonight, but first pamper yourself, relax, and pack a bag for the weekend.” Nicole had a feeling Bill might propose, and was even more surprised when he showed up later that day in a limo to whisk her away for a weekend getaway. “I had planned on proposing in the limo, but Nicole wasn’t ready and ended up having to do her makeup on the way up, so I took that as my sign to wait,” says Bill. The couple had a great dinner before returning to a bed and breakfast for the night. The next morning, Bill got up early, scattered rose petals on the floor, ordered them breakfast, and patiently waited for Nicole to wake up. All was going according to plan — until he accidentally locked himself out of their room. Luckily, he was able to get a new key and let himself back in. As soon as he did, he woke Nicole up, unable to wait any longer. Not expecting the morning proposal, Nicole was ecstatic. Of course, she accepted.

a "RUSTIC ELEGANCE" theme complemented the venue as well as paid tribute to the couple's country upbringings.

56

V

Nicole is originally from Shelburne, Vermont, and when the couple began to plan their wedding, they felt the Burlington area would suit them both. “We love the sense of calm Vermont elicits, the beautiful mountains and greenery, and we wanted to surround ourselves with that on our special day,” says Bill. However, as their guest list grew longer and longer, they realized they would need a big venue to fit all 190 of their guests. When they found The Mountain Top Inn & Resort, they knew it was perfect.

In planning the design and décor elements of their wedding, the couple wanted to give the event a “rustic elegance” that would complement the venue as well as their own country upbringings. Nicole chose a navy and lavender color palette that went well with natural green and brown tones. They also created a Vermont-inspired wedding logo featuring three small mountain peaks, which they used on everything from the invitations and menus to the welcome bags and place cards. In the days leading up to the wedding, Nicole and Bill admit that they were nervous about the weather. “We didn’t talk about it for the entire week before, despite what looked to be a safe forecast, afraid we would jinx it,” says Bill. They didn’t have to worry, however, because the day dawned clear and sunny, with a slight breeze and that ethereal quality that seems to exist only on gorgeous Vermont summer days. At their ceremony, Bill’s brother / best man sang an Irish love song for the couple, and the newlyweds drove off in Bill’s uncle’s 1938 Chevy, the perfect vintage touch for their elegantly rustic celebration. Just like in Vienna, the newlyweds were ready for new adventures with one another, this time as husband and wife.

Though Brittany and Marius were in the same class at Dartmouth Medical School, it wasn’t at school where they connected, but rather on the dance floor. “He was a natural at the tango, and I was intrigued,” says Brittany. After many nights dancing together, when Marius occasionally exhibited not only his tango skills but also his childhood polka lessons, the couple knew they were on their way to a lasting relationship. However, there was one last obstacle that Marius needed to overcome to win Brittany’s love — her overly protective pet rabbit, Buster. So he put his creative skills to work. “Marius prevailed after writing a song called ‘Bustered’ that soothed the rabbit’s apprehensions,” says Brittany. For one of their first dates, Marius planned to cook dinner at Brittany’s place. However, the Valentine’s Day snowstorm of 2007 nearly prevented this. Determined to honor their date despite the treacherous conditions, Marius cross-country skied nearly three miles to Brittany’s house. It was a tough journey, but Marius has never regretted it. Two years later, in an act of perfect romantic symmetry, Marius planned his proposal to take place on another evening of snow. Determined again to honor their date, Marius anxiously drove Brittany to Simon Pearce for dinner, which was nearly empty because of the storm.

For place cards, Brittany canned homemade jam in simple jars adorned with the chickenand-rooster logo on top.

After they had finished eating, Marius presented Brittany with a gift — a felt giraffe. Brittany loved it but had no idea that Marius was hoping the gift would throw her off the scent of his impending proposal. “After I opened the present and admired the silky smoothness of the giraffe, Marius took me to a terrace overlooking a frozen river,” says Brittany. The couple watched as snow fell silently over the waterfall, which tumbled over giant slates of ice floating in the river. In this picturesque setting, Marius knew the time had come. Dropping to one knee, he asked Brittany to be his wife, to which she responded with a resounding “Yes!” Brittany and Marius are both from the Midwest but had taken many trips to Burlington and were eager to provide their guests with an amazing destination wedding weekend. Both also wanted the chance to enjoy Vermont’s great cuisine at their celebration. “The Burlington area is a great place to eat delicious, fresh, and local ingredients,” says Brittany. Brittany embraced many DIY elements when it came to designing and planning. After creating a unique letterpressed chicken-and-

rooster design, she used it to adorn many of her wedding elements, including the invitations and various signs at the reception. For place cards, Brittany canned homemade jam in simple jars adorned with the chicken-androoster logo. Guests also took home handmade bars of soap. DIY touches like these added a personal feel to the day. “These details made our wedding so uniquely us,” says Brittany. Though it had been raining all morning, the clouds broke just in time for the ceremony, setting the scene for an extraordinary day. In keeping with their DIY aesthetic, the ceremony and reception had no lack of personal elements. Following a Lithuanian tradition, the bridesmaids (and a few groomsmen) lined up behind a sheet, with only their feet peeking out. To ensure a long and happy marriage, Marius had to properly identify the foot of his bride, and to increase the challenge, Brittany had instructed all the bridesmaids to paint their toes the same color. “Fortunately, our love is strong, and Marius was able to find the right foot!” says Brittany. The couple also honored the manner in which they had fallen in love — on the dance floor — by indulging in a lively tango as their first dance. In spite of two badly timed snowstorms and the defiance of one pet bunny, Brittany and Marius knew they had come full circle — and a tango only seemed appropriate. 64

Hayley has always had a fondness for whimsical children’s stories. Growing up, her very favorite book was Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Little did she know she would one day find a love worthy of a classic fairy tale. Hayley and Matt began dating during their senior year of high school. Even though they both left Vermont after graduation to attend college in different states, Hayley was sure that the time apart wouldn’t change a thing. “Even at that young age, I knew he was The One and that I would marry him someday,” she says. The couple dated long-distance until deciding they’d had enough, whereupon they both transferred to a school in Vermont to be reunited at last. By that point, it’s safe to say, they had fallen down the rabbit hole together. Hayley and Matt got engaged right before the Christmas of 2009. Matt unexpectedly came home early from work one afternoon and asked Hayley to join him for a hike in the same nearby woods where, nine years earlier, the then-teenaged couple had carved their initials on a particular tree. Now, as they made their way through the snowy forest, Matt asked if she still remembered where “their tree” was. “After a few steps, I said excitedly, since I had found it first, ‘Oh, you mean this tree?’ Before I knew what was happening, Matt was down on one knee in the snow with a beautiful ring, asking me to marry him,” she says.

Many of the wedding elements were a group effort. Guests even brought some of the flowers from their own backyard gardens.

68

V

For Hayley, an Alice in Wonderland–themed wedding was the perfect idea. “The concept of nonsense, madness, tea parties, and the playful adventure of it all reminded me a lot of my relationship with Matt,” she says. As they embarked on planning, Hayley looked for ways to tastefully incorporate elements from the story. After purchasing card stock, ribbons, and a simple embossing kit, she created her own save the date cards, then designed the invitations online, assembling them herself at home with the help of a friend. Table settings were created for The Ferry Watch Inn’s rustic barn using an assortment of vintage baubles including clocks and bottles, as well as books salvaged from an old bookstore. On each table lay a vintage lace tablecloth, the result of many months of scouring antique shops in the months leading up to the wedding. “I love the idea of reusing items passed down for generations,” says Hayley. Each of the napkins was hand-sewn and adorned with vintage buttons.

Overhead, paper pompoms in pewter and yellow hung down from the rafters, made by the bridesmaids over a session of gossip and wine. For the bride and groom-to-be, the scene was perfect. “We liked to think the rustic side represented Matt, while the whimsical side represented me,” says Hayley. Guests found their way to the wedding thanks to wooden signs Matt created using leftover pieces of barn board from a recent renovation project. Strung across the barn, each place card was fastened to a clothesline and featured Sir Teniel’s original drawings of the Wonderland characters. As with most DIY affairs, many of the wedding elements were a group effort. For instance, all the flowers, with the exception of Hayley’s bouquet and the groomsmen’s boutonnieres, were provided by guests from their own backyards. Hayley’s aunt and cousin baked the wedding cake, and everyone pitched in when it came to baking and the assembling the shortbread. After the reception had wound down, a large group of guests, along with the bride and groom, adjourned to Burlington for a nightcap. Hayley says, “As the large group of us waltzed down Burlington’s infamous Church Street, we got a standing ovation from everyone sitting outside all the way down the brick-paved street.” It was a fitting conclusion to such a memorable day. 70

After dating for two years and falling deeply in love, Avita Bansee and Tyler Ellis discussed the question of marriage and agreed it was the right decision for them. Knowing the proposal was coming but not sure exactly when it would happen, Avita was nevertheless excited at the prospect of being engaged. One evening, as the couple made plans to go apartment hunting over the weekend, Tyler suggested that instead of taking the subway from Manhattan to Brooklyn, they instead walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Known since childhood for her ability to see through any attempt to surprise her, Avita blurted out, “Are you going to propose on the bridge?” but instantly felt guilty when she saw Tyler’s crestfallen expression. His plan for that weekend was foiled, but the next week, Tyler made the suggestion again. As they walked across the bridge, Avita didn’t know what to expect. When they crossed over to Brooklyn, however, Tyler managed to surprise her — for real this time — by getting down on one knee and proposing. The moment not only perfectly captured their move from Manhattan to Brooklyn but was also a nod to Tyler’s greatgrandfather, who had himself popped the question on the bridge many decades earlier. The couple had first met in 2008 at a friend’s Christmas party in Brooklyn, but didn’t begin dating until they ran into each other again in the summer of 2009. Avita was out celebrating the birthday of her best friend when Tyler presented her friend with a cute gift — a toy dinosaur tied with a bow. “This struck a chord with me,” says Avita. “I thought it was so thoughtful of him to bring a cute little gift.” Though Avita didn’t find out until later, Tyler had actually brought her a dinosaur of her own but decided not to take attention away from the birthday girl by giving it to her. Today, “My dinosaur is proudly displayed in our apartment in New York and is one of my most cherished mementos from our two years of dating,” says Avita.

The wedding weekend was full of bright, bold colors and beautiful traditional décor.

74

V

Descended from Trinidadian immigrants and eager to celebrate her family’s Indo-Caribbean culture, Avita knew there could be no better place for the wedding than her family’s home in Swanton, Vermont. “This was important for me, because I wanted a traditional Hindu ceremony, where being married in the bride’s parent’s house allows her family to welcome the groom and his family into their home,” says Avita. The celebration was a mix of traditions, with Hindu ceremonies on Thursday and Friday and a black-tie ceremony on Sunday.

The wedding weekend was full of bright, bold colors and beautiful traditional décor. During the Friday ceremonies, Avita wore two different outfits: first, a sari in light rose and purple, in which the groom does not usually see his bride; and second, a red wedding gown. “The color red is significant because red is the token color of a married Hindu woman,” says Avita. During the ceremony, a red powder was applied to the middle part of Avita’s hair, which she will reapply every day of her married life, and is meant to symbolize their marriage and assure the health and longevity of her husband. On Saturday, the couple kicked off the festivities with a lively steel-drum band, Trinidad’s national music. The incorporation of Avita’s culture was a great experience for both the bride and groom — Tyler and his family had the chance to learn more about Avita’s Trinidadian and Hindu cultures, something both Avita and Tyler found very rewarding. After three days of celebrations, the newlyweds were sure that nothing could have made their wedding more joyful — and, unlike their engagement story, everything had gone just as planned.

Becca Jones and Blain Newton met at work, becoming close friends before they began dating. They had so much in common — they’re both outgoing people who enjoy adventure and travel — that the transition from friendship to dating felt very natural. “We fell in love quickly and knew early on that this was different from anything we had previously experienced,” says Becca. After Blain surprised her with a trip to Europe, they traveled for more than a week through London and Paris and had the time of their lives. “When we got home, Blain told me that one of his tests of compatibility in a relationship is how well two people can travel together,” says Becca. Based on that trip, she began to think they could spend the rest of their lives together. In April 2009, Becca and Blain decided to go away for a long weekend together to a lodge in the Adirondacks where they had stayed many times on their way to visit his family near Syracuse. “While in our room, Blain beckoned me to come out on the porch,” says Becca. But it was a cold night, and she argued for a moment before giving in. Once she joined him on the porch under the silver moonlight, Blain got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife. It was a sweet and simple engagement, much like their love. Neither Becca nor Blain had grown up in Vermont, but they couldn’t imagine having a wedding anywhere other than the place where they had met and fallen in love, and which they had come to think of as home. They arranged for an outdoor wedding to take place at the Stowehof Inn, a beautiful lodge in Stowe perfect for their late-June celebration. Becca incorporated as many bright colors as possible into the décor. Her bridesmaids wore sunny yellow, while the groomsmen donned gray suits in lieu of traditional black.

“We fell in love quickly and knew that this was different from anything we had previously experienced,” says Becca.

80

V

The day was gray and rainy, but Becca and Blain nonetheless took a chance and honored their original plans for an outdoor ceremony. Everything went smoothly until they were finishing up their vows and the skies opened up with pouring rain, but it turned out fine. As Becca says, “For all the worrying I did about the rain, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. People popped umbrellas and everyone stayed seated to watch the end of the ceremony. It was actually perfect.” Their beloved dogs, Dallas and Salinger, were an important presence at the celebration. Not only were they the official ring bearers, looking adorable in wreaths of delicate blooms, but photos of them, taken at significant Vermont locations, adorned each of the tables. “We had

pictures of them at the Capitol Building, Whale Tails, Covered Bridge, Snowfarm Vineyard, and Mad River Glen, and we had a description of the locations. This helped give our guests a quick tour of Vermont attractions,” says Becca. The dogs were also featured as tiny sugar figurines on top of the wedding cake. Because all the guests were staying at the Stowehof Inn for the weekend, everyone was relaxed and carefree. Becca and Blain even made special arrangements for all the children attending the celebration by placing Vermont Teddy Bears in each of their hotel rooms. “The children carried their bears all weekend long. Our flower girl even named her bear Stowehof!” says Becca. Looking back, Becca and Blain believe the wedding was a perfect celebration of their love, and their favorite part was simply having all their loved ones there to celebrate with them. “I can’t think of a time when we will ever have that happen again,” says Becca. Sweet, simple, and surrounded by family and friends — there really is nothing else to ask for.

It’s hard to believe that Emily and Sam Lines’ relationship was anything but fate. A testament to how small Vermont can seem — in the best possible way — the pair were introduced by a high school friend of Emily’s whom Sam had met while at college in Middlebury. Their mutual friend had a feeling that Emily and Sam would get along, and he was right; the introduction proved to be the first chapter in the couple’s love story. Unfortunately, Emily was about to graduate from the University of Vermont and planning to move to San Francisco. She and Sam stayed in touch, thinking someday they might end up living closer together. Sure enough, after a year in California, Emily moved to New York to be closer to her family — and to Sam, who had just returned from a stint in China and was moving to New York as well. Fate, it seemed, was on their side again. Four blissful years later, Sam decided to go to graduate school in Michigan, forcing them to spend the next year dealing with the frustrations of a long-distance relationship. Emily was relieved when Sam came home for a long visit in the summer of 2009. They set off for Connecticut one day to meet Emily’s father for lunch, but Sam had a secret plan. After lunch, he unexpectedly drove her to his family’s home in South Londonderry, Vermont, and suggested they take a walk down a pretty dirt road leading to the house. “I had a little hunch something exciting was happening, I have to admit,” she says. As they walked, Emily noticed a wreath Sam had woven from wisteria vines, decorated with flowers to look like an engagement ring. Leading her to a small dock, Sam asked Emily to marry him, and she responded with an enthusiastic “Yes!”

both Vermonters at heart, the couple infused their wedding with Vermont-inspired elements that showcased the state’s natural beauty.

86

Despite their time in big cities, Emily and Sam are both Vermonters at heart, and they wanted to embrace their beloved favorite state in their wedding. The ceremony took place in Emily’s grandparent’s picturesque backyard under a grove of birch trees. Inspired by the trees, the couple used the image of a birch on their stationery, attached birch trees to the tent poles at the reception, and had a gorgeous birchinspired cake. The décor at the Ekwanok Country Club, their reception site, was already “quintessentially Vermont,” so they were careful not to go over the top with design elements. Emily chose the natural colors of ivory, cream, and light green, as well as burlap elements for a rustic appeal. “We wanted the feel to be rustic and homemade and never opulent or too ornate,” she says. The wooden plaques

they used as table numbers were handmade by Sam and named after streets they had lived on. Emily and her mother sewed the whimsical napkins, and Emily’s cousin helped punch and glue the place cards. The couple spent a lot of time choosing readings that they felt would invoke the joy of the day. Their minister, who is also Emily’s godfather, worked with them on creating inclusive, spiritual language. The result was an intimate ceremony that is still their favorite part of the day. As Emily explains it, “There was a moment during the ceremony when I was overcome with happiness and a feeling of being luckier than I could have ever imagined.” As the couple laughed at a joke the minister had made, their parents smiled at them from the front rows, the bridesmaids and groomsmen giggled by their sides, and their dog, Bondi, barked to get their attention. Their disparate lives had finally come together, and there couldn’t have been a better time to say “I do.”

Driven by her love of event planning, her decades of hands-on experience, and her knowledge of the industr y, Carrie MacMillan-L ane launched her event planning and design business, Storied Events, in 2006, followed by Vermont Wedding Salon in 2010. Carrie is more than just a talented planner; she also has a strong background in the hospitality and wedding industry dating back to 1991, when she first began planning weddings, as well as social and fundraising events for galas in highly regarded hospitality positions on the East Coast. While attending college, Carrie managed several restaurants and catering companies in order to save money for medical school. It was then that she discovered her love for 92

be honest with yourself & your chosen team of wedding professionals. if you are realistic with your ideas & budget & communicate these effectively with vendors, everyone will know what to expect. hospitality. After coordinating her first wedding, she knew she had found her life’s work. Needless to say, medical school was forgotten. After trying her hand at everything from sales and marketing to managing museums, in 2005 Carrie moved from New York to Stowe to begin Storied Events, specializing in her true passion — weddings.

Her skills came in handy for Sheehan and Andy, who enlisted Carrie to plan and design their wedding at Hewett Hill Farm in East Pomfret, Vermont. Sheehan had envisioned a country-style wedding with a touch of modern style. Always eager to incorporate the beauty of the surrounding landscape, Carrie understood that to create a country-style atmosphere, she first of all had to keep the ceremony simple and let the farm speak for itself. In that spirit, she used wreaths to decorate simple benches and a charming antique music stand. The reception tent provided a vibrant splash of color, while custom lighting illuminated a collection of tables laden with burlap runners and a mixture of silver and wood vessels bursting with lush blooms. Guests enjoyed signature “Hemingway” mojitos and peach Bellinis. But the real delight came when the sky grew dark and Carrie transformed the event into an inspiring, sparkling “starry night.” Luminaries lit the walkways, trees danced in uplighting, and from every stone wall crevice twinkled a battery-operated tea light. Carrie knows now more than ever that she did the right thing by following her passion. Her work speaks for itself, especially after transforming a humble farm into a transcendent starry night. {featured professionals} Catering: Let’s Pretend Catering letspretendcatering.com (Page 3) entertainment: Best Bands bestbands.com (Page 95) Event Planning & Design: Storied Events storiedevents.com (Page 95) Event Rentals: Rain or Shine Tents & Events rainorshinevt.com (Page 89) Floral Design: Blomma Flicka Flowers blommaflicka.com (Page 176) Linens: The Linen Shop at Occasions occasionsvt.com (Page 188) Transportation: Ethan Allen Coachworks vermontlimo.com (Page 210)
