Season Outlook

The Commodores return four of their top scorers from 2008-09.

Senior Brooke Goodwin returns to lead the Commodores. Now in his third year at the helm of the Vanderbilt women’s golf program, head coach Greg Allen has solidified his place among the nation’s elite coaches and has built a solid foundation for the Commodores that sets up his golf team for an outstanding future and a great 2009-10 campaign. Last season, the Commodores advanced to their 10th consecutive NCAA Regional and 11th in the history of the program, and freshman Marina Alex moved on to the NCAA Championships as an individual after finishing in a tie for fifth at the East Regional in Gainesville. Alex had a slow start at the NCAA Championships, but rebounded to shoot a 143 (74-69) in the final 36 holes of the tournament. Her final 36-hole total equaled a tournament best, a score she shared with individual champion Maria Hernandez of Purdue and Calle Nelson of Virgina. Vanderbilt returns four out of five starters from a year ago, a group that played in every round in 2008-09, and hopes that experience leads them to further heights in 2009-10. Returnees for the Commodores include senior Brooke Goodwin, who has played in every round of every tournament of her career, junior Megan Grehan, who has also played in every tournament of her career, and

sophomores Marina Alex and Andrea Messer. Messer and Alex also played in every tournament as a freshman and posted the two best scoring averages on the season. As in previous years, the Commodores will face one of the toughest schedules in golf, a slate that includes Vanderbilt’s own Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship, with a field that is one of the best in collegiate women’s golf. Allen recently sat down and addressed questions about this year’s team and offered his outlook on the upcoming season. How will last year’s trip to the NCAA Regionals help your team this season? I know for sure that we do not want to ever experience the disappointment we went through last year at Regionals. We were so close, but just couldn’t get the job done in the final round. The positive was watching Marina hold on and earn a spot to NCAAs as an individual. The experience she gained there carried over into a great summer. She has set some lofty goals this year and it should be very exciting watching her achieve them. She wants to be an all-American and she certainly has the

Sophomore Marina Alex played in the U.S. Women’s Open in the summer of 2009. talent to do it. You had two freshmen play every match in 2008-09...what are you expecting from them this season? We are expecting big things out of Marina and Mess (Andrea Messer) this year, but I think they might be expecting more of themselves. They are pushing each other to be the best they can be. Mess wants so badly to beat Marina and Marina wants to go four years never finishing lower than Mess. I’ve told each of them that if they can make that happen, we’ll be a better team. This could be one of Vanderbilt’s youngest teams ever...One senior, one junior, two sophomores, and three freshmen. Will you have to coach them differently? What are the advantages of having such a young team? One of the great things about this group is they are very coachable and very willing to do what is best for the team. Although it appears to be a young team on paper, it is actually a very experienced team because four of the seven played in every tournament last year. And with the experience they gained from an up-and-down year, it made them all better. As for the freshmen, they

are fast learners and not afraid to ask for help. They have great upperclassmen that are willing to show them the way. Team chemistry plays such a big role in a team’s success and this group has all kind of personalities that make it fun to be around.

Brooke Goodwin has played in every match in her Commodore career and is the only senior on this year’s roster...talk about her game. And, will she be the one providing leadership for this team? I’ve asked Brooke to put it all on the line this year and see how good she can really be. She has one of the best swings in college golf and we’re looking for great things out of her. You have a very talented incoming freshmen class – where do they fit in with all of the experience returning? I’m so fired up for this season because for the first time since we’ve been here, we have a healthy roster with seven players that will be competing weekly for five spots. Any time you can have competition within a team like what we’ll have this year, it can only make us better. Anna Leigh, Lauren and Gaby are all great players, but even better people. They are the perfect fit for this program and they are good enough to see a lot of playing time.

Greg Allen, considered one of the outstanding collegiate golf coaches in the NCAA, enters his third season at the helm of the Vanderbilt women’s golf program. Allen made an impact in his first two seasons - his Commodores have been to two consecutive NCAA Regionals and in 2009, freshman Marina Alex qualified for the NCAA Championships as an individual. Her 143 (74-69) on the final 36 holes tied a tournament best, a total she shared with individual champion Maria Hernandez of Purdue and Calle Nelson of Virgina. Alex also qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open and played a practice round with one of Allen’s former student athletes and the world’s number one golfer, Lorena Ochoa. Allen has the Commodores in a great position heading into the 2009-10 season. Five of the seven players on this year’s roster are underclassmen, and the two leading scorers from 2008-09 were freshman. Allen and assistant coach Nicki Cutler have the future of Vanderbilt women’s golf looking extremely bright. Allen came to Vanderbilt after a seven-year tenure as the head coach at the University of Arizona, where he twice won the Pac-10 Conference, finished as NCAA runner-up in 2002 and coached Lorena Ochoa - currently the No. 1 ranked player on the LPGA Tour among nine other All-Americans. Allen had a lengthy record of achievement at Arizona during his seven years there. In addition to his Pac-10 titles and 10 All-Americans, he coached eight NCAA All-Scholars, 13 Academic All-Pac-10 student-athletes, three NCAA Players of the Year, two National Freshmen of the Year, three Pac-10 Players of the Year, two Curtis Cup selections and 21 All-Pac-10 performers. Two of his players won three Golfstat Cup Award for the nation’s lowest stroke average. His Wildcat teams also won nine tournament championships and registered 28 individual victories. Allen has also coached LPGA and PGA stars Natalie Gulbis, Erica Blasberg, Laura Myerscough, and David Gossett during his coaching career. Allen arrived at Arizona after serving as assistant men’s golf coach at Texas from 1998-2000. He helped lead the 1999-2000 Longhorns to a banner year that included the NCAA Central Region championship and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA

Championship, its highest finish in five years. The squad ended the season ranked No. 8 in the final MasterCard Collegiate Rankings. The 199899 team had its best showing in six years, as it earned three tournament victories and finished in the top three in seven of its 13 competitions. Well known for his rapport with collegiate players, Allen handled many of the day-to-day operations for the Longhorns and assisted head coach John Fields with scheduling, recruiting and coaching at practices and tournaments. Prior to that he was Director of Tournament Operations for the American Junior Golf Association in Roswell, Ga., where he spent five years as both director of tournament operations and tournament director. While in Roswell, Allen was responsible for planning and executing 47 national junior golf tournaments and other AJGA events. He oversaw all AJGA tournaments and was responsible for the supervision of eight tournament directors, as well as the hiring of 24

summer interns. He is a native of Beechmont, Kentucky and graduated from Murray State in 1993 with a degree in journalism. As a student, he worked in the sports information office, where he was a liaison for numerous sports, including golf. Prior to graduation, Allen worked two summers as a communications intern for the AJGA, where he was responsible for all on-site media relations at 10 national junior golf tournaments. He and his wife Julie, a swim coach who competed in the 1988 Olympic trials, have four children, Maggie (14), Mollie (10), Mason (8) and Mabry Jane (1).

Nicki Cutler, one of the cornerstone student-athletes that helped shape Vanderbilt women’s golf into a national contender, is entering her third season as an assistant coach with the Commodores. Cutler is no stranger to Vanderbilt women’s golf, having played for the Commodores from 1999-2003, earning honorable mention AllAmerica honors and twice making the All-Southeastern Conference team. “I’m really excited about having a former player on board as our assistant coach,” Allen says. “Nicki was very instrumental during her Vanderbilt playing days helping Martha build this program. She is a great ambassador for this University and has a bright future in coaching. Our team is very fortunate to have her.” Cutler was a part of Coach Martha Richard’s first recruiting class that helped propelled the budding program. She twice shot 67 in tournament play, once at the SEC Championship in 2002 and once at the Stanford-Pepsi Intercollegiate. Those rounds are just one stroke off the current school mark. She also set a school record at the time with a 210 score over 54 holes at the Stanford tournament in 2002 and her 211 at the SEC Championship is one of three entries the Denver, Colo., native has among the current school Top 10 tournament achievements. Cutler joins the program after having served as an instructor at the famous Maidstone Club in East Hampton, N.Y. She was a member of the LPGA Tour in 2005 and the Duramed Futures Tour in 2005 and 2006. Various injuries stymied her playing career. Nicki gained a wealth of teaching experience with an internship with top-rated golf instructors Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson during the winters of 2003 and 2004. “Lynn and Pia have coached many of the top golfers in the world and their golf school in Phoenix has been rated as the best in the country,” Cutler says. “That experience helped prepare me to coach, a very special experience that will be most helpful here.” “Greg and I are eager to take this team to the next level,” Cutler says. “Our goal is to be a perennial national championship contender.”

A 29-year veteran at Vanderbilt University, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Athletics and Recreation Brock Williams is in his fifth year as Director of Sport Operations for men’s and women’s golf and men’s basketball. Williams’ sports duties include day-to-day operations, budget control, department staffing and alumni relations. He also oversees Vanderbilt’s student recreation center and its support of 38 intramural sports programs, as well as serves as a liaison with the cheerleading squad and Spirit of Gold pep band. Previously, Williams worked many years as Associate Dean of Residential and Judicial Affairs at Vanderbilt. A 1979 graduate of North Carolina, Williams earned his master’s degree from Vanderbilt in 1984. Williams and his wife Andrea, have three children: Corbin (17), Carolina Grace (14) and Christian (11).

Nate Bell begins his first year on Vanderbilt’s athletic academic staff, and will work with men’s and women’s golf as well as swimming and diving. Before his arrival, he worked in the Athletic Academic Support Offices at the University of Illinois and Ball State University. Originally from Fort Wayne, Ind., he was a four-year member of the Wabash College basketball team, where he earned various athletic and academic awards. Nate was recently married to the former Sunny Schaeuble of Bloomington, Ind., and they reside in Nashville.

Mollie Malone begins her first season working with the women’s golf program. Malone, who began her tenure in the Vanderbilt Athletic Training office in 1992, also works with the Commodore Track and Field program. Malone received her undergraduate degree from the University of South Alabama and her graduate degree from Vanderbilt. Mollie resides in Nashville with her husband, Michael, daughter, Mia, and son Mason.

Curtis Turner is in his sixth year with Vanderbilt’s Strength and Conditioning staff. In addition to working with the women’s golf program, he also supervises conditioning for men’s golf, the men’s and women’s tennis teams and assists with football. Turner came to Vanderbilt from Clemson, where he worked for three years. There he was charged with overseeing strength and conditioning efforts for golf, rowing and cheerleading while assisting with football. Curtis is a Specialist in Sports Conditioning (SSC) through the International Sport Science Association. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in secondary education – psychology and sociology – from Clemson’s School of Education. He is a native of Blairsville, Ga.

Vanderbilt Legends Club serves as the home site for the Commodore men’s and women’s golf programs. Featuring two 18-hole championship golf courses, the venue has served as the backdrop to numerous tournaments, including the LPGA’s Franklin American Mortgage Championship, the Southeastern Conference Women’s Championship and the Men’s and Women’s Mason Rudolph Championship. In fact, the Vanderbilt Legends Club’s North Course (7,190 yards, par 72) has hosted an LPGA Tournament and is the home of the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship. The South Course plays 7,100 yards with a par of 71 and hosts the men’s version of the Mason Rudolph. Founded in 1992 just south of downtown Nashville, Vanderbilt Legends Club was designed by Bob Cupp, one of the world’s foremost golf course architects, and Tom Kite, current Senior PGA Tour player and 1992 U.S. Open champion.

Vanderbilt’S GOLF FACILITIES EARN HIGH MARKS FROM ‘GOLF DIGEST’ Golf Digest magazine’s 2008 College Golf Guide ranked the Vanderbilt women’s program fifth-best in the nation. Among the leading factors for the magazine’s high praise of the Commodores were the outstanding facilities available at the Vanderbilt Legends Club and the Conner Short Game Practice Facility, which ranked in the top 10 percent of the study.

Vanderbilt Legends Club Vanderbilt’s Conner Short Game Practice Facility, opened in August 2004, allows players to practice any short-game shot they can imagine. The beautiful two-acre facility, located adjacent to the driving range at Vanderbilt Legends Club, features five different bunkers and three greens – one for putting, with both bentgrass and Bermuda, one for chipping, and one with a 130-yard practice hole for practicing shots of various distances and lies. Vanderbilt dedicated its new short game practice facility in honor of Cleo and Lewis Conner, Sr., during ceremonies at the Vanderbilt Legends Golf Club in August 2005. Cleo and Lewis Conner, Sr., are the late parents of Lew Conner, a prominent Nashville attorney who funded the facility’s lead gift.

Vanderbilt’s Golf Tradition Peggy Harmon Brady Vanderbilt’s First Women’s Golf All-American

Peggy Harmon Brady was Vanderbilt’s first women’s golf All-American earning the honor twice in 1970 and 1971. She earned her degree in computer science in 1972, and was recently named to the Vanderbilt Sports Hall of Fame, one of 12 inaugural inductees. She won the Tennessee State Girl’s Junior Championship in 1967 and 1968 and won the State Amateur Championship in 1969 and 1970. In 1968, she won the U.S. Girl’s Junior Championship. Brady has played in three U.S. Women’s Open Championships and six U.S. Women’s Amateur Tournaments. Information taken from “The History of Tennessee Golf” by Gene Pearce.

Nancy Reed

1954 National Intercollegiate Champion Peabody College’s Nancy Reed made golf history by winning the National Intercollegiate in Greensboro, N.C. in June 1954. As was customary at the time, Reed was competing unattached as Peabody College did not have a women’s golf team. Reed won the title by beating the defending champion, Pat Lesser, on the 19th hole of match play. Reed had won the Tennessee State Amateur as a 17-year old high schooler in 1950. She later was the State Amateur runner-up four times and captured the Nashville Women’s Golf Association Championship six times. Reed (at right) is shown in this mid-1950’s photo with Tennessee golf legend Betty Rowland Probasco, who also won an Intercollegiate title and eight State Amateur crowns.

Mason Rudolph Director of Golf Emeritus

Mason Rudolph burst upon the national golf scene as a teenager and after a successful professional and coaching career. The personable native of Clarksville, Tenn. is still serving as one of the sport’s finest ambassadors. Rudolph became the youngest player ever to compete in the United States Open in 1950 at the age of 16. Later that year he won the USGA National Junior Championship, setting the stage to be named one of the Top 100 amateur golfers of the 20th Century in 1999 by Golf World. Rudolph, who coached at Vanderbilt, was a veteran of 21 years on the PGA Tour, posting six victories and playing on winning Ryder and Walker Cup teams. He played in 15 Masters and 17 U.S. Open Championships. In 1960, he was the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

Sarah Jacobs, Courtney Wood and May Wood showcase some of their championship hardware. Jacobs sits behind her 2002 Tennessee State Amateurs trophy while Courtney Wood won the Trans-Am and Tennessee State Open Championships in 2002. May Wood won the prestigious North-South Classic.

Meredith Ward was a three-time All-SEC performer and three-time Academic All-SEC honoree.

A three-time All-SEC performer, Courtney Wood owns Vanderbilt’s second-best individual score at a national postseason tournament (2004 NCAA East Regional: 73-70-69=211).

Mallory Crosland was Vanderbilt’s first individual NCAA qualifier.

Nicki Cutler was a two-time All-SEC Golfer who owns many of the best individual rounds in program history. She joined the Commodore women’s golf staff in the summer of 2007.

Vanderbilt has participated in four NCAA Championships and 11 NCAA Regionals, including the last 10 in a row. The 2007 Commodore team had its best finish in the history of the program at the 2006 championship, finishing in sixth place with a total of 1200 (303-302-298-297).

Vanderbilt standout Jacqui Concolino became the first player to win medalist honors at an NCAA regional when she carded a career-best five-under par 208 to win the 2007 NCAA Central Regional. The 208 (67-68-63) also set a new school individual record for a postseason event.

Beyond Vanderbilt

Mallory Crosland (1996-1999)

Senior Producer, Broadcasting PGA of American Mallory Crosland was Vanderbilt’s first NCAA individual qualifier and was a two-time all-SEC selection in 1998 and 1999. She is currently a senior broadcasting producer for the PGA of America in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. With the PGA of American, she helps produce various award shows, events that include the PGA First Lady of Golf (given annually at the Senior PGA Championship), the Distinguished Service Award (given annually at the PGA Championship), and the PGA of America Annual Awards, honors given to all of the top PGA Professionals annually at the PGA Merchandise Show. She oversees the production of the videos for these nights, the entertainment, and the overall flow of the night. Typically about 1000+ guests come to each of these events.

Kristen Svicarovich (2004-07)

Graduate Student University of Texas Kristen Svicarovich, a second-team All-SEC selection and a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, and is currently attending the University of Texas pursuing a master’s degree in transportation engineering. She is currently president of Intelligent Transportation Society on campus and puts together events for members and brings in guest speakers to talk about the changes occurring in transportation. Kristen also helps with the University of Texas women’s golf team as a graduate assistant and still plays competitive golf. She won the Central Texas Women’s Amateur this summer and qualified for the US Women’s Amateur. After graduating in December, Kristen plans on moving back to her home state of Oregon to pursue a career in the transportation industry and to prepare for the 2009 LPGA Qualifying School.

Assistant Project Manager CB Richard Ellis Julie Bartholomew graduated with a degree in civil engineering in May of 2008 and is working as an assistant project manager at CB Richard Ellis, the world’s largest commercial real estate services company. Bartholomew was a four-time selection to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and in her senior season, she was named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-Scholar Team. Julie says golf is still a very important part of her life. “Golf is still a very big part of my life, and has been a great businees tool for me. I have found that within the business world, golf is a great networking tool and many opportunities have presented themselves for me simply because of my golf background.”

Vanderbilt Hosts The Mason Rudolph Championship

Each fall, Vanderbilt welcomes some of the most elite teams in women’s golf to participate in the Commodores’ annual Mason Rudolph Championship at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin. In 2008, UCLA won its second consecutive Mason Rudolph with a tournament record with an 850 (-14), and Sydnee Michaels of UCLA won medalist honors with a 205 (-11) The 2009 Mason Rudolph Women’s Golf Championship will take place Sept. 25-27 on the Vanderbilt Legends Club’s North Course.

Additional Golf Courses Vanderbilt Women’s Golf Has The Use of Many Different Courses Around The Region To Prepare For The Venues They See During the Season. Belle Meade Country Club Head Golf Pro: Matthew Swarts Course: 6,809 yards, par 72 This year marks the 103rd year of golf at the Belle Meade Country Club. A tight, tree-lined driving course, Belle Meade requires long, medium and short irons shots as well as delicate wedge and chip shots to large, exceptionally kept bent greens. The first Senior Amateur Tournament was held at Belle Meade in 1955. Belle Meade also was the site of the 1969 Southern Amateur Tournament won by Hubert Green. The 1984 Tennessee State Open also was held at Belle Meade. In June 2001, Belle Meade hosted the USGA Junior Girls Qualifier. The course is designed by Donald Ross.

Bluegrass Country Club Director of Golf: Rick Burkardt Course: 6,658 yards, par 72 The Bluegrass Yacht and Country Club, constructed in 1951 by Robert E. Cupp Design, brings golf in Tennessee to its finest for all levels of play. Set against a backdrop of plush, rolling terrain, Bluegrass contains scenic tees and meticulously cared for greens that allow play year round. The course also merits a slope rating of 129 from the back tees, which will require even the accomplished golfer to carefully contemplate each shot.

Brentwood Country Club Head Pro: Johnny Bridgeman Course: 6,439 yards, par 71 Nestled among the Club’s 215 acres is the par 71 course, which is cascaded with Champion Bermuda greens. The course has a slope of 127 from the blue tes and the course rating is 72.7. Golf Club of Tennessee Head Pro: Doug Oubre Course: 6,844 yards, par 71

The course is a beautiful layout of holes designed through a wide valley along Brush Creek. Four holes are found along a scenic stretch atop a bluff. The golf course demands accurate, long tee shots with large bent greens surrounded by strategically-located bunkers. A thinking person’s course, the layout will require the use of every club in your bag from long, straight tee shots to short, medium and long iron shots.

Little Course at Conner Lane Head Golf Pro: Vikki Vanderpool Completed in 1995, the nine-hole par-27 course that surrounds the Golf House of Tennessee was designed to give the beginner and scratch player an exciting golf experience. Created by Bob Cupp, renowned golf course architect and co-designer of its neighbor, Vanderbilt Legends Club, the layout requires players to hit a variety of shots. Youngsters learning the game get a chance to encounter many difficult golf situations on this course, while the better players will find the mixture of fast greens and a number of different hole placements a challenge. As the site for the Tennessee PGA Junior Golf Academy and other junior events, this course is one of the premier learning facilities for juniors in the country.

Hillwood Country Club Head Golf Pro: Michael Lathrop The 18-hole “Hillwood” course at the Hillwood Country Club facility in Nashville, Tennessee features 6,903 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 . The course rating is 73.2 and it has a slope rating of 131 on Bermuda grass. Designed by Bubba Johnson, the Hillwood golf course opened in 1955. This course has many trees that can alter your shots. It is well bunkered and has water that comes into play on four holes. The hole that will test you the most is #9, a par 4 with an uphill tee shot to a dogleg right fairway.

Nashville Golf and Athletic Club Director of Golf: Brian Jorgenson Blue Tees - 7510 yards, par 72 One of the most demanding courses in Middle Tennessee, Nashville Golf & Athletic Club has become known during its 25 years of play for its fast and undulating greens and hilly terrain. In fact, the land originally was owned by Davy Crockett’s uncle in the 18th century, and the 10,000-square-foot clubhouse totally preserves the original chestnut log two-room Crockett house with the large stone fireplaces. Nashville Golf & Athletic Club, which has played host to the 2004 and 2005 Tennessee State Open, has been recognized as the mid-state’s most challenging course by Business Journal Weekly.

The Golf Club of Tennessee is a Tom Fazio designed course. Opened in 1991, it finished runner-up in the private division of Golf Digest’s 1992 list of best new courses.

Nicholas S. Zeppos was named Vanderbilt University’s eighth chancellor on March 1, 2008. An avid fan of Vanderbilt athletics, Zeppos served as the role of faculty representative for the Commodore athletics program before his ascension to the chancellorship. A distinguished legal scholar, teacher and executive, Zeppos served from 2002 to 2008 as Vanderbilt’s chief academic officer, overseeing the university’s undergraduate, graduate, and professional education programs and research in liberal arts and sciences, engineering, music, education, business, law, and divinity. As provost and vice chancellor, he chairs Vanderbilt’s budgeting and capital planning council and leads all fundraising and alumni relations efforts across the institution, as well as overseeing the dean of students and dean of admissions. Zeppos has led a number of important initiatives at Vanderbilt, including the planning process for The Commons, a landmark transformation of the first-year experience; the Strategic Academic Planning Group; innovative efforts in undergraduate admissions and financial aid; and the development of new programs in Jewish studies, law and economics, and genetics, among others. He also has led the university’s Shape the Future fund-raising campaign, which exceeded its $1.25 billion goal two years ahead of schedule and set a new target of $1.75 billion by 2010. Zeppos joined Vanderbilt in 1987 as an assistant professor in the Law School, where he has been recognized with five teaching awards. He subsequently served as an associate dean and then as associate provost before being named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs in 2002, and served as interim chancellor from August 1, 2007 until March 1, 2008, when he was appointed chancellor. From 1982-1987, Zeppos practiced law in Washington, D.C., at the United States Department of Justice and Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, where he specialized in appellate litigation involving complex regulatory, statutory, and constitutional matters. He has written widely on legislation, administrative law, and professional responsibility, and is a nationally recognized scholar in these fields. He served as chair for the Scholars Committee, advising the Senate and the ABA on the confirmation of Justice Stephen Breyer, and as chair of the Rules Advisory Committee of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He has also served as a consultant to government agencies, major corporations, and trade associations on complex litigation, policy design, and strategy. Zeppos is a 1979 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School where he served as editor in chief of the Wisconsin Law Review and was selected as the outstanding graduate of his class, and a 1976 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Wisconsin where he studied history. He is married to Lydia Ann Howarth, a graduate of the University of Chicago and Lawrence University, who is a writer and editor. They have two sons, Benjamin and Nicholas.

Vice Chancellor David Williams is one of the most influential leaders on the Vanderbilt campus in addition to directing Vanderbilt’s vast athletics program. Since September 2003, Williams has directed the effort to fully integrate Commodore athletics into the Vanderbilt community. With the support of former Chancellor Gordon Gee and the Board of Trust, Williams’ efforts have helped pave the way for more student-athlete participation in the mainstream of University life. Along the way, he has placed his stamp on the program, overseeing the retention and hiring of head coaches and adding two varsity sports. Athletics is but an aspect of Williams’ influential role on the Vanderbilt campus. In addition to overseeing athletics, Williams serves as General Counsel and Secretary of Vanderbilt and its nationally recognized Medical Center, and directs the 14-member General Counsel Office, the Office of Risk Management, the University’s Compliance and Conflict of Interest functions, and the operations of the University’s Board of Trust. Williams’ professional participation on campus also includes a tenured full professorship at the Vanderbilt School of Law, lecturing on Tax Law, Sports Law and Education Law. He also teaches an annual course on Law and Higher Education at Vanderbilt’s Peabody College, and from time to time, courses in the undergraduate curriculum. Williams has not limited his activities to the Vanderbilt campus. He recently concluded a term on the NCAA Academics/Eligibility/ Compliance Cabinet, helping set national policy regarding collegiate athletics. Williams also supports youth athletic programs in the Nashville community, coaching a youth basketball team for the West Nashville Sports League and serving as a timer for the Nashville Aquatic Club Professionally, Williams serves as Chairman for the U.S. Federal Reserve Sixth District Board of Directors, Nashville Branch. He is an active member of the American Corporate Counsel Association, the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the American Bar Association. He is a member of the Continuing Legal Education committee of both the Nashville Bar Association and the NACUA. As a member of ABA’s Section of Business Law, Williams serves as an active member of the Corporate Counsel Committee. He holds terms on two prestigious legal committees – the ABA Standing Committee on Public Education and the ABA Section on Legal Education and Admissions Standards Review Committee. Williams has taught at the law schools of the University of Detroit, Capital University, the Ohio State University and Vanderbilt, and directed the Ohio State University Law Program in Oxford, England in 1992 and 1995. He was elected outstanding law professor at both the University of Detroit and Ohio State. A resident of Nashville, Williams and his wife, Gail, have two children: Samantha, who is a varsity swimmer and sophomore at Brown University, and Nicholas, who is a ninth grader at University School of Nashville and competes in cross country, basketball, track and socer. His wife serves the university as Associate Director of Community Relations.

• Eight Vanderbilt varsity teams reached postseason play. • The women’s basketball squad reached the NCAA tourney for the 10th straight appearance, advancing to the Sweet 16. • Baseball received their fourth straight NCAA berth for the first time ever. • The football team earned its first postseason bid in years, then won the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl.

Academic Successes 186 Vanderbilt student-athletes achieved All-SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition in 2008-09. Of those student-athletes, 73 achieved Dean’s List status with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

D.J. Moore became the first Commodore defensive back to earn All-America honors since 1983. Mike Minor was a first round pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, marking the third straight year a Vanderbilt baseball player was taken in the initial round. Jennifer Risper was named the nation’s top defensive player in women’s basketball. Josie Earnest was the nation’s top bowler for the second straight year. Christina Wirth was named to the Lowe’s Senior Class All-America basketball team. Six Commodore athletes earned postseason All-America honors. 26 Vanderbilt standouts received All-Conference recognition.

Several national media outlets including USA Today, The New York Times and Sports Illustrated recently have featured Vanderbilt’s athletic successes.

Vanderbilt’s four revenue sport head coaches — Melanie Balcomb (women’s basketball), Tim Corbin (baseball), Bobby Johnson (football), and Kevin Stallings (men’s basketball) — have earned SEC Coach of the Year honors during their Commodore tenures.
