NATURAL MATERIALS AND NEUTRAL TONES PROVIDE THE PERFECT BACKDROP FOR VINTAGE FURNITURE AND POPS OF COLOUR IN KATHARINE MACLEAN’S S HOME
“Simple units ensure a calm, bright ‘When we moved scheme ” in, the old kitchen was so dark and murky that I wanted the
1complete opposite with white cabinetry to keep the scheme bright. This means the cheaper elements, such as tiling and paint, can be changed at a later date for a new look without impacting expensive elements, like flooring and worktops. ’
BUY THE KEY PIECES Half Moon cabinets in White and Market Mustard (interior), from £20,000, Pluck Kitchens. Bamboo porcelain tiles in Verdigris, £194.98sq m, Ca ’ Pietra DUAL PURPOSE
Timber ceiling battens add richness and elevate a simple white scheme. They also help with acoustics
2narrow space ”
‘The kitchen is long and rectangular so we chose the timber ceiling battens to create the optical illusion of a wider space. It’ s the same with the tiles on the wall and the island unit; they ’ re laid vertically to help make the low ceiling look taller. And, to ensure the island appears bigger, we chose a white induction hob to avoid the surface being broken up by a black square. ’
BUY THE KEY PIECES Silestone Lagoon worktop, from £501sq m, The Marble Store. Induction hob SI2M7643DW in White, £939, Smeg. For similar cork flooring, try Espira Corka, £58sq m, The Colour Flooring Company. &Tradition Flowerpot pendant lamps in Mustard, £220 each, Skandium
“Pops of yellow add a ‘We fresh feel” wanted little splashes of brightness
3here, so chose Market Mustard for the inside of the larder and the shelving. It sits nicely with the earthy neutral tones of the wood already in the house. We chose this scheme long before the old kitchen was removed, but when we did so, we found sections of the original mustard-coloured vinyl – so we obviously picked the right shade for the house.’
BUY THE KEY PIECES Wall clock, eBay; try Retro wall clock in Black, £50, Brookspace Lascelles
“Green creates a tranquil backdrop ” ‘As it sits in the middle of the spectrum, green is the most relaxing of colours.
4This Farrow & Ball shade, Bone, is actually a soft grey with a touch of green, and works as a great neutral.’

ZONE SPACES
Plants act as a subtle visual divider between the living and kitchen areas, without disrupting the line of sight
There are no hard and fast RULES about the colour PALETTE in this house –it’ s more about using calm SHADES and adding STRONG finishes ”
5work well with new pieces ”
‘We took the time to understand the age of the house and what materials and fittings would have been used. The exposed brickwork and these wall-hung shelves are original and bring so much character. We took the shelves off to replaster the wall and backed one section with original 1970s hessian wallpaper reclaimed from the hallway.’

By LIVING here for a couple of years before starting WORK, we got to know the shortcomings of the house and the way the LIGHT fell ”
“Have both beautiful and useful things ” ‘The previous owner was an architect and had designed this extension with
6this original dining table and chairs set as a starting point. The table had always been covered with a cloth so it was in an incredible condition. We sent the top off to have it treated with a high-grade floor varnish, so that we can now use it every day. ’

“A mix of tile styles adds personality ” ‘Terrazzo is a brilliant material as it looks
8good, is incredibly durable and long lasting. I chose this black and white design to pick up other colours in the house. However, as it’ s expensive, I’ ve mixed it with a simple, square tile laid in an interesting pattern. ’
