Historical background and influences

04

Historical precedents

Mid-century modern home decor originated in the United States during the 20th century, drawing inspiration from the early 20th-century German Bauhaus movement. The main principles, emphasizing sleek lines, functionality, and a forward-looking aesthetic, played a pivotal role in shaping this design movement.

Post-World War II, a wave of German designers migrated to the United States, introducing fresh and contemporary design concepts. By the mid to late 1950s, the influence of retro-futuristic

design became popular in American aesthetic interiors. The advent of mass production facilitated the creation of furniture on a large scale, utilizing a diverse range of materials and an array of vibrant colors.

Renowned designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Herman Miller, George Nelson, Arne Jacobsen, Isamu Noguchi, Cara Greenberg, and Eero Saarinen gained fame for their decorative contributions during this period.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 04 VICTORIA

Conceptual influences

Bauhaus Movement is a modern art movement that combined a wide array of art mediums, materials and disciplines. This movement was born in Germany and was popular during the 1920s and 1930s, and the main motto of this style was “Form Follows Function”. The word Bauhaus means “construction house” in german; it originated as an art school in the early 20th century and was founded by Walter Gropius. The Bauhaus artists prefered the use of linear and geometrical shapes thus completely avoiding curvilinear or floral shapes.

Some key marks of the Bauhaus style in graphic design were the use of primary colors or using a white and black color palette with a single accent color that could be red or blue; had a big focuss on collage design, using isolated images of figures or human features like eyes or hands giving the Bauhaus poster design a surrealist style and experimenting with graphic design layouts and is very common to see them using “broken” grids.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 04 VICTORIA

Aesthetic influences

1. Symmetrical and Precise Framing

Wes Anderson is famous for his attention to detail, especially in his framing and composition. He often uses symmetrical and centered shots, creating a sense of balance and order in his films. This precision in framing not only enhances the visual aesthetics of his movies but also reflects his control over the narrative and the world he is creating.

2. Pastel and Retro Aesthetics

Anderson’s films are known for their distinctive color palettes and retro aesthetics. He frequently employs pastel and muted colors, evoking a sense of nostalgia and whimsy. His set design and costume choices often incorporate vintage elements, making his movies feel like they exist in a timeless, slightly fantastical world.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 04 VICTORIA

1. Use of Yellow

Yellow plays a pivotal role in “Watchmen” both in terms of its visual impact and its thematic significance. The character of the Comedian, who meets a violent end early in the story, is seen wearing a yellow smiley face badge. The badge becomes a motif in the film, symbolizing the dark underbelly of the world of Watchmen. The juxtaposition of the cheerful yellow smiley face with the character’s brutality encapsulates the moral complexity of the narrative.

2. Contrast Between Warm and Cold Colors

“Watchmen” employs a distinct visual style through its use of color to set the tone for different scenes. The film often juxtaposes warm and cold colors to evoke contrasting moods and themes. Warm colors, such as reds and oranges, are frequently used in scenes that emphasize action, conflict, and intensity. Conversely, cold colors like blues and purples are employed in scenes that emphasize introspection, investigation, and mystery.
