Letter from the Editor Hello and welcome to the first edition of the Hyde Student Magazine for 2021; the orientation ‘Welcome’ Edition! We here at Hyde are so excited for the year ahead and hope students have the most incredible year, starting with VU’s online Orientation Events! Following from 2020, the Hyde team this year are producing six editions to showcase our fantastic VU Community. Even online, we are able to create a platform to share, engage and enjoy! Like all great student publications, we are dependent on student contributions. Our goal is to provide all students with an outlet for their creative content. If you have anything you would like to share, please contact us via our online channels. Submissions we are looking for are articles, news, fiction, opinions, comedy, artworks or anything else your heart desires. We are very excited to see what VU students have been creating in their spare time. If there is anything you think would look great in Hyde, we want to see it. As always, we want to keep safe in this COVID-normal world. We will be releasing all editions online with an aim to print and distribute in the near future. We are the student publication for all campuses across VU, no matter where you are, we are here for you! Stay safe, take care, and enjoy!

PROF ADAM SHOEMAKER | VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PRESIDENT I would like to welcome all of you to Victoria University in 2021. My name is Adam Shoemaker, and like so many of you, I am new to the University. I am absolutely thrilled to be here. I was an ‘accidental migrant’ to Australia from my native Canada. In the 1980’s I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship to study at the Australian National University in Canberra. I made the trek to Australia as an international student with nothing but one duffle bag of possessions. I feel that Australia made me as a person, and ever since I have been committed to giving back to this wonderful place. I can think of no other Australian university with more potential or capacity than VU to strengthen its influence, impact and contribution to its communities. It recognises the responsibility and challenge of successful career-creation for all students, regardless of background. And it draws inspiration from the Indigenous concept of Moondani Balluk— meaning ‘embrace people’ in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri nation, which is so important to me. As a student, you will see VU continue to transform for the better. Our aim is to make it the best dual sector university in the world. We will continue to innovate, to sharpen our progressive way of learning and ensure you graduate from VU ready to make a real contribution to the workforce, whether it is around the corner or around the world. While a significant part of university life involves seriously hard work, university life is not only about what happens inside the classroom or the Zoom Room. Hyde provides students with a safe place to express yourselves, to share your experiences and to inspire others. I hope that you will use this platform to challenge each other and help shape the future and a better post-COVID environment for everyone. The events of the last year have taught us that we need to live in the present and not take a second for granted. I wish you all the best with your studies in 2021, and please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have suggestions to improve Victoria University.

- Adam

page 5 Hello and welcome to VU! I hope your experience so far has been a pleasurable one. My name is Oliver and I am this year’s General Secretary of the Student Union. In 2021, I will be embarking on my third and final year of my Bachelor of Criminal Justice, which I am very much looking forward to. When I’m not studying (or doing behind-the-scenes student union stuff), you can find me playing futsal, watching or performing in theatre, crying in the corner or hanging out with friends. I grew up in Perth, and in my three years here, I have thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself within the culture at VU andI recommend you do the same! If you have any questions or concerns or simply don’t know who to turn to, you can email me at generalsecretary@vustudentunion.com. I would love to get to know you! Much love to all,

HOW COME IT’S This article is slightly embarrassing. Mainly because I’m Michael Hyde and this magazine takes its name from me. Several years ago the then editors approached me and asked if they could rename the Victoria Uni student magazine from Seed to Hyde. At that time I was the co-ordinating lecturer of Creative Writing, Children’s Literature and Sports Writing. In those days (about five years ago), the Professional Writing and Literature Units were filled to the brim. Annually we had 250 in Creative Writing. 150 in Children’s Literature. 100’s in Publishing and Editing. Overflowing Sports Writing classes. And a universally acclaimed literary journal, Offset. Students were taught by authors, publishers, film makers, poets and journalists. I guess they asked me, not only because I was a writer but also because I had been involved in so much of the students’ writing lives – some of whom went on to be published themselves as well as starting up their own small magazines. I refused the editors’ offer three times on the grounds that there were a number of excellent writing lecturers and tutors at VU and to choose one to name the magazine after didn’t feel right. Anyway, finally my partner told me I should stop being an idiot, that the editors had thought it through, and that I should say yes.

Since that time I’ve retired but continue to write novels and be a mentor to the editors of Hyde who followed. I’m an old bloke (75 if anyone’s interested) and went to university at Monash in the late 60’s to early 70’s and was deeply involved in the antiwar movement, demonstrations and the fight for a better world like so many of my generation. I was expelled (later re-admitted) from Monash due to my political activity. But it was there that I became interested in student newspapers. The paper at Monash was called Lot’s Wife and was a radical, informative, punchy, humorous newspaper where all the issues of the day (Land Rights, Vietnam War, Women’s Movement, Environment, Sex, etc) were discussed and argued. Almost anything went.If somebody argued a point you could guarantee the next issue would include somebody arguing the opposite. The student newspaper became a clarion call for many progressive causes, refusing to accept censorship, and often riling the more conservative elements of the day. Student journalists were attacked and at times threatened with jail. Many of those associated with Uni publications went on to write for and/or edit daily newspapers, underground newspapers, literary journals and magazines of the day.

CALLED HYDE? Student publications aren’t meant to be sweet, harmless and inoffensive. Of course they provide important information on what the uni has to offer, where to go when you need help, where the parties and social activities are happening. And not forgetting important Covid info (how could we?!). But at the same time they take a stand on concerns of racism, misogyny, inequality, refugees, January 26, and so on. Student publications like Hyde provoke us, make us think and re-think, spur us on to action, give us a good laugh. They give all of its readers a voice to ask and state opinions. I was a secondary school teacher for 25 years and a lecturer/tutor/coordinator for 20 years at VU. This university holds a special place in my heart. I received my MA and PhD here. But the main reasons for my love of VU are because of my colleagues and especially the students, many of whom remind me of much older versions of the young students I first met in Building D when it was Footscray Tech in the mid 70’s, where I began my teaching career. Where I first began to get kids to write their own stories. And when the tech became Footscray City College, students won the National Prize several times for the best collection of student writing. In a way I went full circle. Hyde is yours. I feel honoured to be so closely connected to it. Read it. Share it. Pass it on. Write for it! Build on the tradition. - Dr Michael Hyde Michaelhyde.com.au

The Accessibility department at VUSU serves all VU students who have a (dis)ability. Our work involves helping students navigate accessibility plans and VU support services. We want to promote services and to make them easily found and accessible to all VU students regardless of background, age or gender. There should be no barriers stopping students from pursuing education and so accessing services shouldn’t be so difficult, that students are deterred from accessing help. This year, the Accessibility department will be additionally focusing on spreading awareness about undiagnosed disabilities and mental health conditions, including how stigma can be reduced for such conditions. No student should be forgotten regardless of their situation or circumstances. If you have any issues on campus, or during online learning, regarding accessibility or (dis)ability, please do not hesitate to get into contact with us! We are here to help you navigate your degree at VU and to ensure that you can achieve your personal best with no barriers.

STUDENT WELFARE Adjusting to University life can be difficult, from meeting new people, to adjusting to new routines, learning new skills and coping with extra expenses, we at VUSU try to help in every way we can. The Welfare department focuses on supporting students and providing a range of wellbeing resources that can help dealing with the demands of study and life outside University. We run activities that help you develop practical skills to better manage your time, money and personal issues by internal and external collaborations. We want to help students develop strategies to concentrate on their studies and get the most out of university life. We make sure that if we at VUSU cannot help you directly, we refer students to internal or external support services. The Welfare department runs many events throughout the year to help give students ways to de-stress on campus and online by having different activities and events to be able to relax in times of high stress, including: De-stress Festival Mental Health First Aid courses Online Yoga and Zumba classes Be a Better Human Festival Welfare Seminars

In 2021, we will continue to offer and provide many activities to VU students, that help promote your mental, physical and social health and wellbeing Our aim is to help and support students to be able to return to University in a safe way when we are able to, and continue to run and maintain the events and activities to promote the health of students. Over the next year we would like to try and get students more involved within the student community from going to local parks for walks or to the local shops and restaurants around University, so students can be provided with more of a presence during these hard times. My name is Lachlan Anderson and I am the Vice President Welfare Officer at VUSU. I am looking forward to supporting VU students through their time at VU! I am Devindya Sandumini and I am studying events, hospitality and tourism management in Victoria university. I have been engaged with the student life, student union since I started my studies here. I was the president of VU Lankan club in 2018 and I was elected as the women’s officer for VUSU for 2021 . The first day of the university was a special and an exciting day for me. I came for the orientation and I was participating in many programs which the university organized in July 2018. My favorite program was the incredible race they organized and my team won 2nd place from the event. It was a really fun day and also I met my 1st friends group after I came to Australia through this event while getting to know the incredible and awesome places around the Footscray park, Footscray Nicholson and metro west campuses.

in one class which made the lecturer and the students get to know each other better. In between building P and M we always had beautiful events happening at least once a week. These events were organized by student life, VU student union, cultural clubs and the other clubs and societies in the university. These events help to get to know other cultures as they have their foods, dances and singing items when they have the events. This is one of my favorite things in VU.

When it comes to studies, the block mode was a new experience for me and it made me focus on one subject at one time and to get high grades in the subjects. I met my own study group. We enrolled in the same subjects so we could spend more time together and especially when we come to group assignments it is really helpful to know your group members better for a really good job. And also most of the lecturers are really friendly and I could ask any doubts and the things that I didn’t understand well because in this block mode we only had about 30 students

WOMEN'S DEPARTMENT

- VUSU Liptember 2020

Multicultural week is one of the best events organized by VU student life and VU student union which gives all the cultural clubs to organize different events on campus. We got a chance to introduce our own culture to the other students who don't know about our culture and also to get to know many students from our own country.Since I was living in Sri Lanka I always wanted to participate in a Holi festival and I got a chance to participate in the Holi festival that the Indian club and the student life organized in 2018. That was a really nice and fun day as we got a chance to play with the colors and dance to Indian music on the campus. I was a student volunteer in 2019 and 2020 in VU and this gave me lots of opportunities to get to know the VU staff and the students by participating and helping to organize and do the events in the campus. Liptember festival which is about women’s mental health was one of my favorite festivals that I volunteered in the campus. All the events organized by VU were unique and they are helping specially the international students who are living away from their families by giving them a chance to experience their own culture on the campus. Being part of the VU family is one of the most incredible things to happen to my life and all the memories will be cherished forever in my heart.

Find Our Voices, Reclaiming Our Spaces project is a collaboration between the Respect & Responsibility Unit, Victoria University Student Union, and a range of student groups engaged in violence prevention work.

International Womens Day 2018 VU Students and Staff joined their voices through a unique art project. Professional artists from Permesso Collective helped paint the mural on our Footscray Park campus. The artwork aims to provide a platform and space for women’s voices and make a collective statement for a safer and more respectful world for all.

The Be a Better Human Campaign was launched in 2019 by VUSU after the Australian Human Rights Commission conducted a survey on university students in 2017 and released the National Report on Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment at Australian Universities.

TOGETHER we can BE a BETTER HUMAN! This initiative was created with a group of Flinders students from the ground up, to reflect campus culture. We don’t just want it to be about what we shouldn’t do; we want it to be about self-improvement for everyone. And when we say ‘everyone’, we really do mean everyone. We’re encouraging everyone who is part of our campus community to take a moment and consider how we can ‘better’ our behaviour. “Victoria University has a zero tolerance approach to violence in any form, including sexual and gender-based violence. Genderbased violence is a serious social issue driven by gender inequality and enabled by sexist attitudes and behaviours. We work to build a culture of safety and respect, where students and staff are empowered to become change agents to help stop gender-based violence at the University and in the wider community” (VU Respect & Responsibility). In-line with the VU Respect and Responsibility Department & VUSU Bystander Awareness Training, and Consent and Respectful Relationships Module,

page 24

VUSU believes that bringing the BaBH campaign to VU further develops education for students of the west to be a better human.“It is important that we all show that sexism and harassment have no place at our university. Everyone should be treated fairly and have a safe and respectful place to learn.” (VU Respect & Responsibility email). Launching this campaign last year, and working with Respect & Responsibility was a highlight of my time in VUSU. Together, we can break down stigmas and ensure a safe and equitable education and life for all. - Cat Abourizk (VUSU President 2019) We believe that this campaign is not centered at spreading a name or a department. It’s about everyone doing better, and their bit to change the culture around sexual assault and harassment. We have widely seen our Consent, Empathy, Respect tote bags and jumpers on campus, at the shops, at concerts and many other places, supporting this movement. Look out for this campaign and more this semester in 2020. BaBH is always developing, understanding, and learning.

Meet Victoria University's VU ISA (Victoria University’s International Student Association) has been representing International Students at Victoria University since 2000. Our vision serves as a framework, which guides our path to become the pillar for our fellow students and to keep their interests at heart. We have been the bridge between our International students and the University to ensure that all of them have a smooth university life. Hello, my name is Barsha Bhandari; second year Bachelor of Laws student and I am the President of VU ISA. I, and the entire team of ISA wish you all a very happy new years’. I look forward to meeting and talking to all current and new International students and helping them out in the best possible way to ensure that they have a memorable experience at VU.

page 32

ISA recognises and empathizes with all of our International students that have gone through unimaginably tough times this past year. 2020 was a challenging year for all of us, and particularly for International students. To help our students during these tough times, Victoria University provided COVID-19 relief support to anyone affected by the pandemic and ISA has been fortunate enough to play a part in this. We fully understand that the support we have been able to provide does not compensate for the loss you may have experienced. However, ISA constantly strives to work harder to make each International student’s experience better at VU. If you are going through any difficulties, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will take all possible measures to help you and if we ourselves are not able to help, guide you to the right direction.

International Student Association Membership 2021 Considering these challenging times that all international students are facing, VU ISA has decided to offer FREE membership for all our 2021 members. The membership comes with new merch packs for 2021 as well. This year we have decided to provide a backpack, water bottle & a grocery voucher to all of our members. By becoming a member with us, you will also receive emails from us for all the events and important information related to international students. Our Goal for 2021 Our primary goal for 2021 is to run more mental health related sessions as many of our International students have seen the worst during the last year. We believe raising awareness and talking about mental health will help International students to understand their mental health better and help anyone who is suffering from mental health difficulties seek the help they need.

ISA will be celebrating different events and also supporting our cultural clubs to celebrate important festivities such as Eid, Diwali, and many more. This year ISA aims to establish its’ own website as currently, our primary source of social media and publishing is Facebook. We believe this will better help us deliver our support and important information. We can be reached best through our ISA Email. You can either email at victuniisa@gmail.com OR contact the President at isa@studentunion.com. You can follow our work currently in our social media. facebook.com/vicuniisa @vicuni_isa

DEPARTMENT

I am a nursing student, I am part of the LGBTQIA+ community and I am the LGBTQIA+ officer for Victoria University Student Union. As the LGBTQIA+ officer, I will aim to raise awareness and create a safe space for all students at VU. One of the ways I will do this is by opening up and using the LGBTQIA+ rooms at each VU campus to their full potential. I will be organising events and talks for all VU students. However, my main priority is to help make all LGBTQIA+ VU students feel safe and included and be themselves. Feel free to reach out and contact me via email: queer@vustudentunion.com

page 35

MEDIA The Digital Media officer position is relatively new, when compared to some of the other portfolios but already fulfils a large number of roles. On a day-to-day basis, we respond to queries by students on social media, organise events, update the VUSU website, and more recently, run online events for VU students. One other thing that many members of the community may not be aware of however, is that we offer advertising packages for any businesses or individuals wishing to promote their businesses with us. These include a number of packages, including Hyde Magazine advertisements, as well as others relating to events such as the annual VUSU ball. One other form of advertisement we offer is the use of the digital screens found around a number of VU campuses, which can display any advertisement agreed upon. Aside from this, we also manage a variety of online platforms in order to assist students throughout their studies. While our social media pages make up a number of these, we also enable students to reach out to us through the website, as well as the provision of platforms for students to voice their concerns about matters related to their time studying. Aside from this, we also have a subscription based emailing list for students to join if they wish to receive updates on important information related to the university and ongoings on campus. The Digital Media officers can be reached either by email, or by contacting us via our social media pages, on either Facebook or Instagram. We look forward to working alongside the union to better the experiences of VU students, and to assist anyone that reaches out to us for help.

Victoria University Auslan Society As a club we aim to raise awareness of Australian Sign Language and share Deaf culture with our community at Victoria University. Auslan is a culture of communication, and it is essential that we try to ensure there is accessibility available for those who identify as part of the Deaf community, and those who may come in contact with others needing such accessibility. We are doing this by getting both students and staff at VU involved in workshops and courses to integrate the learning of Auslan into their bank of knowledge. We hope that our efforts will spark interest in this beautiful language and bring awareness to the needs of our students at VU! By attending our events you are supporting not only your fellow students and wider community, but yourself too!
