Personification of Dimensions San Juan, PR

M.Arch Fall 2020 (Group Project) | Revit, Lumion, Photoshop

Research and analysis of the site and it’s larger context to San Juan

Project Description Resilient Adaptive reuse of Martin Brumbaugh School to withstand the next climate disaster. This project revolved around adaptive reuse of a disaster affected built area (school building) to build culturally rich urban agricultural and living spaces along with a Community Led Emergency Management (C.L.E.M.) program. The intention was to Bridge resources and structures into a continuously flowing architecture. Acting as an amalgamation of permanent as well as temporary spaces, the building was a gateway to bridge the history with the novel enhancements. The proposed design reflects this bridging as physical and programmatic interventions, promoting togetherness inside and out.

Site Plan The approach to the Martin Brumbaugh school building is architectural interventions of bridging, wrapping, and juxtapositions. The focus is on bridging, literally and metaphorically, the demographics of Puerta De Tierra by providing a transition for people through the wrapping of spaces. Through this concept, a “Bridge” is introduced between the regional “Identity” with a resilient one. The juxtapositions provide engagement with a new identity instead of the existing buildings themselves.

This concept of wrapping provides a balcony from which people can view and become what is viewed. While the internal architecture and cultural essence of the School building is intact, we add a resilient layer of Bamboo, Timber and concrete to introduce the novel Identity to the project to withstand future calamities. C.L.E.M.

Museum sectional detail

The school and adjacent abandoned buildings were re-utilised to effectively provide Museum space, Restaurants, Innovation space, Agricultural & Residential area along with C.L.E.M. area. C.L.E.M. represents a disaster response area with off grid infrastructure, drone stations and command centre with supply of food.

22 Fire Station Phoenix

M.Arch Spring 2020 | Revit, Lumion, Photoshop

Site Plan

Project Description Up-lifting the social interaction and decreasing the work stress on fire-fighters using an amalgamation of light and shade. Fire Station 22 is proposed on the site of South Phoenix in Arizona. The visible ranges of the South Mountains provide a gripping view to the fire-fighters and the commoners alike. The West part of the site has space for future expansion and possible encroachment by the proposed Light Rail Construction. The approach to the design of the fire station was to first focus on the reliability and accessibility of the basic functions desired from the space. The design is proposed to provide safety and security to the people of the community nearby.

Site Analysis - Surrounding shadow during the day time

The concept that was put inplace for the design for this site was the interaction of light and shade. The interaction is metaphorically related to bringing change (read decrease) in the crime rate in the neighborhood by growing a safe community interaction zone. The concept of pentagon gave a natural break in the built mass by incorporating courtyards allowing a natural access to daylight. This interaction is also provided between the fire-fighters and plantation area for stress releasing activities. Given the climatic variables, effective shade was provided at the North facade to give a “cool-off” zone.

The community block is provided with a library, community hall and an emergency medical room to promote interaction among people. Dedicated relaxation spaces have been provided to fire-fighters in the public as well as private zones. The render displays a courtyard present at the transition from dorms to working area in the “private zone“ for the fire-fighters.

The project employed a bunch of cooling strategiesshading devices, plantation, courtyard planning as well as mechanical cooling system. Shading devices like fins and roof shading reduced thermal gains from walls and windows. BEKA capillary tube mats were deployed under Hollow core slab for radiant cooling. To reduce the surrounding temperature a bunch of trees and plantations were added on the South, West and East Facades.

5 Star Resort Udaipur, India

B.Arch Thesis | Revit, SketchUp, Lumion, Photoshop

Site Plan

Project Description A recreational luxury resort proposed, analysed and designed for the city of Udaipur. The study & analysis of more than three resorts along with historical cultural relevance of the city of Udaipur led me to propose this 5-star luxury resort in an unused land of the city. The proposal cemented trade-offs between its acceptance economically, socially and environmentally. The design featured a public zone at the entrance comprising reception, banquets and restaurants. Based on different requirements and occupancies different forms of cottages were designed. The arrangement of the private cottages were influenced by climatic variables.

The concept was a combination of retro-architecture of the city and the lavishness of a five star. The form, thus, was based on adding/subtracting pure shapes with retro-touch. The functionality of the resort was brought to fruition from site features and site constraints. While the site features included adjacent lake - Fateh Sagar Lake, and a scenic view to mountains, the constraints at site included conservation of trees and a need of proper infrastructure for inward and outward bound vehicles. The retro look is given by many features like arched-windows, domes, double heights and so on.

First Floor Plan

Second Floor Plan

Elevation of Delux Room Given the climatic variables as well as architectural dependence needed to be imbued, a lot of brainstorming led to 3 main features that were finally incorporated into the design of private cottages offered at the resort. These features were - Small balconies with thick walls & sunshades to reduce thermal gains, incorporation of domes to provide the regional royal architectural looks of the “Mewars” and arch Shaped windows for Cross Ventilation.

Section of Delux Room

Plan (Spa Building)

Plan (Reception Building)

The hand-made model and the displayed render finely depicts the asymmetrical placement of cottages along the axis, i.e., the pathway. Recreational spaces add to the luxurious and relaxing essence of the design perpetuated in the resort.

MG Showroom (from MG Manual)

Project Description Encompassing India with 100+ showrooms and service centers for Morris Garages (MG). Showrooms shared a retro perspective pointing to the long lineage of the brand. A strong relation to the origin country, the UK, was sprinkled with a comfortable environment for the customers. A lot of brainstorming went into the design towards providing a sense of inclusion to every stakeholder concerned. It was important to mark an impression for an incoming brand into the hearts of the customers. Lighting, historical timeline banners, dedicated product experience and discussion zones added a sense of luxury that the company wanted to impart in the brains and hearts of a huge Indian Automobile market.

The workshops gave us a unique opportunity to display the brand using it’s products. A partition grill was used at vehicle exits to display tuned, finished, and serviced cars to the customers coming in to collect or/and submit their MG automobile.

Workshop Facade Grill The Showroom’s façade concept was that of merging the building with the sky! Exterior mesh grill design is inspired from the mountains, placing them upside down. This type of façade offers modern elegance to the building and provides better visibility of interior design and products at display from outside. The grill is made of C&C cut solid aluminum sheet. Also, the touch of red color tick denotes “It’s all great”.

Showroom Facade Grill

Magna strip/ lineage strip displays London skyline as the origin of the brand is Britain. This magna strip is Double sided Backlit and graphic display box. Three types of flooring was concorded, with one car display, three cars display and five cars display. A neat separation between the customer area and car display area was provided using flooring transition - wooden tiles for customer area and black thick tiles for display areas. The tree seating adds an element of greenery to the space and provides some casual seating for the customers.

Showroom Plan (3 cars display)

Showroom Plan (4 cars display)

GURUGRAM FLAGSHIP At the heart of this project with 100+ showrooms and service centers, lies two “MG Flagship Showrooms”! The importance of the design was to aww-struck the customers at the entrance and throughout the experience. This gave us a chance to bring out the best of the brand. A unique approach was taken to display a strip of cars going in a clockwise manner around the floor as well as the roof. Along with this an MG vintage was placed near the lounge area of the showroom, giving a glimpse of the lineage of the brand. A bigger and bolder facade grill was placed to display the magnificent presence of the flagship in the surrounding area.
