TECTONIC VS STEREOTOMIC
CLASS: Design I SEMESTER: Spring ‘15 DURATION: 4 weeks In the beginning stages of architecture, the studio focus was to examine how spaces form and evolve within each other. We had to implement tectonic and stereotomic pieces to form an 8”x8”x8” model. Carving within the model was the strategy for me to show the stereotomic style and then articulate the negative spaces with the tectonic forms.
These images of the model illustrate how the spaces formed and filled. The change in materiality highlights the hierarchy and balance between the carved stereotomic pieces and the additive tectonic elements. Both mass and volume are transformed in this process.

ICARUS PROJECT
CLASS: Design I SEMESTER: Spring ‘15 DURATION: 5 weeks An abstract model created based on the icarus myth. The effects of the motion of falling from the sky are interpreted into architectural terms. The shifts and changes of the movement of Icarus’ body gave the insipiration for this design. The spaces had to follow the sequence of the hypothetical movement of the body, forming a path of tectonic and stereotomic objects which resulted in this model.

Architectural terms that apply to the forms of the human body during free fall such as: Sequence, Folding, Contraction, Extension and Rhythm were the ideas that developed within this design. The spaces are created and connected with each other based on my research upon the body’s movements during this action. The sketches show the ideology of the concept.

SPACE & VOLUME
CLASS: Design II SEMESTER: Summer ‘15 DURATION: 4 Weeks This project focused on creating the spaces by using the volume of the materials. The challenge was to apply 3 sets of different spaces and reach a height of 24” while switching directions every 8”. Balance and context were 2 key factors that had to be taken into consideration in order for this model to be produced and stand vertically.
Some original sketches showing what the original ideas were. The stability and weight balance of the model were critical to its functioning.

These sections were drawn from 3 different sides of the model and they show how the spaces are created from the constructed volumes. The balanced flow of how the model is composed is visible as well as the context.

BEE KEEPERS INN
CLASS: Design IV SEMESTER: Spring ‘16 DURATION: 7 weeks LOCATION: Fort Pulaski - Savannah, GA This real site project tested our abilities to create a hosting facility for guests right outside of Savannah, GA in Fort Pulaski, right by the Savannah River. The nature and texture of the site was taken under major consideration for the models to be created. The experience of the site is based upon entrance of the site, the view from it and the movement between them. The 4 key factors that the models needed to address were: Reflection, Rest, Observation and Harvest, all based upon the bee keepers’ work and experience, where Savannah, and Georgia in general, is famous for the quality of the honey as a region.
THE SITE PLAN SHOWS THE RELATIONSHIP AMONG THE 4 SPACE WITHIN THE AREA. THE WATER AND DIFFERENT ELEVATION CHANGES OF THE GROUND ARE SHOWN WITHIN THE MODELS. THE TRANSITION BETWEEN THE MODELS WAS BASED ON THE CONTEXT OF THE SURROUNDING SITE. I DID NOT WANT TO AFFECT MUCH OF THE NATURE OF THE EXISTING SITE. THIS CONTRIBUTED TO THE STRATEGY IN PLACEMENT OF THE MODELS IN THE AREA.

THE MODEL PLANS WERE DRAWN TO SHOW THE MOVEMENT AND FLOW OF EVERY AREA. THE CONNECTIONS AND HOW THEY ARE MADE TO ACCOMODATE THE GUESTS ARE THE PRIMARY FOCUS. THE PATTERNS WERE BASED ON EACH MODELS’ THEMED FOCUS, ALSO IDEAS WERE DRAWN FROM THE PROCESS OF HOW HONEY WAS COLLECTED.

URBAN DEVELOPMENT - DUBAI
CLASS: Intro to Urban Planning SEMESTER: Fall ‘08 project type: Essay Format This eassay analyzes the rapid development of Dubai in the 20th century from the perspective of urban planning and zoning. Areas highlighted illustrate the main points of the analysis.

By the sections we can see how the building relates to nature and the South Florida climate and environment by its open spaces and relation of spaces to the surrounding environment itself.
CLASS: Theory of Architecture SEMESTER: Spring ‘16 project type: Powerpoint Presentation For this essay I was assigned to analyze 2 of Herzog & De Meuron’s projects in depth. My choices consisted of the Perez Art Museum in Miami, FL and the Elbe Philharmonic Hall in Hamburg, Germany. The analysis was from the theoretical perspective as to what the major design influences were in those projects. The areas that are highlighted emphasize in the main points of the theories.

Classical Style The Perez follows suit. It is basically 2 horizontal platforms, one close to ground level, the other 3 stories up, with a collection of connected boxes positioned deep inside. Set gently on slender columns, the top layer cantilevers as much as 30ft before connecting to any vertical plane, creating a shaded veranda that surrounds the entire museum.
While rising above the brick block of the older building with an identical ground plan, the top and bottom of the new structure are fundamentally different from the calm and simple form of the warehouse below: the broad, undulating shape of the roof rises to a total of 100m at the Kaispitze (tip of the peninsula), sloping down to the eastern end, where the roof is 30m lower.

YOGA SPACE
PROJECT TYPE: Personal Interest LOCATION: Arizona State Un. Tempe Campus DURATION: 6 weeks This creative project was a conceptual idea in one of my classes at ASU. The hypothesis of the project intrigued me to become creative and deliver a project on my own with similar parameters and concepts as the scenario we were given. Composition and texture were two factors that were taken under consideration, given the climate, surrounding environment and position of the space. We were given a site area of approx. 4,000 sq. feet and had to choose the placement of the space which could not take up more than 800 sq. feet. The location of the site is in the heart of the main camplus which makes it accessible easily. This part of the campus is a major threshold for the transition from the main parking lots and academic environment. It is attached on the library site and right across from the Memorial Union, which serves as the main building on campus where different activities take place including food courts, study room and the main university offices. Analysis: The view from the space was a key factor of the placement within the site. Arizona is known for the beautiful sunsets and the sky colors during those. Implementing as much nature as possible into the space, gives yoga a more spiritual sense, a feeling where someone, while excersing, can relate to the surroundings. The raised elevation gives a sense of floating while looking West, towards the sunset, the tree park and the water fountain. The overall analysis of the concept View, by also adding Accessibility and Traffic Flow, gave the final composition.

OBSERVATORY
PROJECT TYPE: Personal Interest LOCATION: Northern Arizona - Grand Canyon DURATION: 8 weeks This space was created to serve as an Observatory for an ancient Indian village that was discovered in N. Arizona. The landscape served as an example to test our ability to use the site accordingly. My primary focus was on the observation and the experience of the surrounding landscape and the ancient site.
FOCUS AREAS ENTRANCE
The three main components of the program inlcude: Entrance, Circulation and Observation area. The Entrance space was designed so immediately upon entering, the guest has a view of the landscape. The Circulation is designed in such a way as to reinforce the Observation area, which also shares a majority of its space with.

The blown up Axo shows the ideas behind using different elements and materials within the project. The shadowing and its forms played a key role in the process and how it overcasted certain spaces. The beginning of the project was to create a checker board and color 9 blocks in 3 sets of 3. Then we brought up the sides like walls and connected the 3 blocks in such way where we had a dispersed mini model. The final step was to extend or shrink those sides to any size forming a space.

CIRCULATION
OBSERVATION
These images examine the three areas and how they interact with each other. The experience of Observation through out the whole space and within every area is shown via this image study. Upon entering the space, the open view of the site and the “interior” area are immediately encountered. The Circulation part is broken down to two areas, the “interior” one, where the guest understands what this space’s intentions are. and the exterior, where the observation is integrated. The last image depicts the overall view towards the landscape and the space itself. The shadows not only serve as protection from the sun but also to direct the experience towards the site view. The full essence of a naive area where landscape takes over quietly and the objects do not take away from it.

NIGHT LIGHT STUDY The model sits on a landscape site where the view is the primary characteristic. The mountains and the lake serve as an oportunity for the guest to experience the site even during the night. This night and light study gives the opportunity to understand the functionality that is deliveled from the space towards the guests.

TOY STORY MANIA
PROJECT TYPE: Entertainment STATUS: Under Construction LOCATION: Hollywood Studios Orlando, FL COMPANY: HHCP Architects
My main role in this project was the railings and ensuring all the codes regarding them, were met. Disney’s own construction coding made this task challenging. Before adding any rails I had to take under consideration some specific parameters, such as distances needed between all rails, dimensions by coding, egress openings affected, control joints and ADA needs.

LEGACY POINTE AT UCF
PROJECT TYPE: Mix Use STATUS: Construction Documents LOCATION: Orlando, FL COMPANY: HHCP Architects This project is under Construction Documentation thus the material provided is not complete and it has to be minimal for contract purposes. The purpose of this building will be mix use for senior citizens. It includes zones such as Assistant Living, Individual Living, Skilled Nursing and Memory Care along with spaces for dining, socializing and general activities. The collaboration team includes Frank J Nunez, Arturo Cotto, Renata Marinho and Jose Esquilin.
