FAMILY COFFEE SHOP

This is a real life project that I worked with other architects in Vietnam to help my friend design her coffee shop. This was an interesting experience to learn from the professional architectural pracrtice after school. From this small project, I have earned a great deal of knowlege from dealing with client, team working, branding, etc.

2028 VANCOUVER OLYMPIC MASTERPLAN

In the fall of 2015, our graduate architectural design studio, instructed by Nathan Howe, took on the task of evaluating Vancouver for a proposed 2028 Summer Olympic bid. The site we focused on the Olympic Park and Village was False Creek Flats, a primarily industrial and poverty stricken residential area. The site was determined to be a good opportunity to redevelop and revive an eyesore of the city. Our major concern for the site was designing for the future and creating a lasting legacy for Vancouver not only designing for the temporary 2028 Summer Olympics.

BRING THE WATER BACK The introduction of water back into the site creates a salt marsh, which will be a defining feature and driving force of the Master Plan. The site is then stitched together through a network of pedestrian paths weaving throughout the salt marsh. The pedestrian paths and connection between locations of importance, which furthermore helps organize reenergize the flows of activities, and densify the False Creek Flat to celebrate the gate way to downtown Vancouver. 17

MAIN MEDIA COMPLEX

Vancouver, BC, Canada Spring 2016

In the Spring of 2016, each student undertook the design of a venue within the Vancouver 2028 Summer Olympic Master Plan. I personally decided to take on the task of designing the Main Media Complex (MMC). Looking at Vancouver’s cultural complex can inform the MMC’s “second life,” or Post-Olympic reconstruction. Vancouver is ranked as one of the most diverse cities worldwide, fostering it to become a “cultural hub” with a lively art and culture sense. Vancouver’s cultural facilities are essential to its communities and are key to the economic health of the city. By integrating art and culture into the main MMC, the community will be engaged in a way they never could have imagined in the False Creek Flats area.

PROPOSED NEW CULTURAL HUB IN A NEW FALSE CREEK FLATS ALONG THE COUPLET GOING TOWARDS DOWNTOWN

SITE

This is the ideal location for the purpose of transforming the media center into a main cultural center of the new development of False Creek Flats / Olympic Park and a valuable asset to the City of Vancouver attracting young talented people. 29

TERMINAL AVENUE TO DOWNTOWN The site is located adjacent to terminal avenue, terminating the west end of Olympic master plan.

TRAIN TRACKS The historical train track and proposed sky train going to downtown, passing along on the northern area of the site.

CLUSTER The purpose of venues’ location clustered along the salt mash is to densify the area and create nice pedestrian friendly paths with full of activities. SITE CONDITION Looking at the site physical condition in order to design a program complex that is strongly weave into the urban fabric. 30

WALKING RADIUS 500 meters radius from the center point of the site marks the range of comfortable walking area.

VIEW CORRIDORS Good views along the South side to salt marsh totally open the nature magnificent.

SENSORY Sensory analysis explores the factors that excite the public flows in the physical setting of the site. such as attracting views, natural elements as trees and water.

GREEN WAY The salt marsh creates a great natural habitat becoming an ecological niche in the city. This informs designing green short cut linking from the salt marsh and the existing park in the north side of the train tracks.

31

SCALE TO CITY BLOCK Divide the blocks of the parks in the North side of the train tracks into even segments

GENERATE GRID WINGS Extend the segments’ endpoints into lines cutting through the site. These segments also separate the programs.

CONTROLLING THE CORES The lines from segments’ mid points controls the cores’ orientation.

ONE IN A WHOLE This process of weaving into urban fabric takes advantage of the division method from city blocks., which helps unify the design program and elements. 32

PINCH TO CREATE ACCESS TO SECOND PUBLIC LEVEL Bottom and top curves control the public level.

STRUCTURES The structures are created based on the grid base.

FLOOR PLATES Floor plates and program within it are also created from the grid base.

ELEMENTS IN CONTROL The main elements of the design are generated from the division lines and blocks from the existing city block. 33

PARAMETRIC FABRICATION

Fall 2015

At the inception of the Fall 2015 semester, students in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design (CAPD) were relocated to APD West while their long-established home, Seaton Hall, underwent construction. Upon arriving at the new swing space, APD West, Nathan Howe’s graduate architecture studio decided to tackle the lack of lounge seating. We designed and fabricated the SPINE (Studio Parametric Integrated Network Element), a parametric seating element to be used by CAPD students, faculty and staff. Our success would depend on teamwork, cooperation and our ability to problem solve.

CROSSROADS COMMUNITY LIBRARY FALL 2014

Crossroads district is located near downtown Kansas City. More and more residents move to the area resulting in the increasing need for parking spaces. The project calls for a community library and a multi-level parking structure on a site which is currently being used as a parking lot. The challenge is not only to design a landmark facility for public demand, but also have to maintain the efficiency of parking.

The concept of glass block core is to separate the library and the parking structure, house the main circulation connecting all the key areas and programs. Using glass block allows bringing natural light into and illuminate the ambient light into the interior during daytime and reflect light into the outside during nighttime. This image presents as a navigational beacon on Main Street. The overhang horizontal bars play as a contrast tectonic to to vertical of the glass block core, house the auditorium and cafe area. The higher location within the library of the bars and its openness let inhabitants capture the city view at best and still maintain a “reaching out and welcoming gesture to people outside the library.

MODERN ART MUSEUM

The site is located on 13th street between 2nd and 3rd Ave, Greenwich Village, Manhattan, Newyork. Adjacent to the site toward North side, there exists a narrow vacant lot facing 14th Street, which also has a subway stop right in the front. A discovery research reveals a plan to be developed a multistory commercial building. In order to respond to this condition, the program not only focuses on designing a museum but also concepts to be creating a continuous design to allow free public flow to benefit the urban life.

MANHATTAN PUBLIC LIBRARY

The site is located on the rural area not far away from Kansas State University campus, adjacent to a technical school and various apartment complex toward the Northeast side, and sloping down to the parks and forest on the South and West side. The focus of the design aims to respond to the existing context by articulating the form, and exploring materiality to activate the building at different time of the day.

STAVANGER URBAN INTERVENTION

Through an exploration of coexisting systems and their inherent relationships, permeability, harmony, imagination, diversity, and adaptability are the concepts that PHIDA emerges from. By implementing new design into the complex series of existing systems that define Stavanger, PHIDA principles are used as a mean to appropriate value and rational to the decision made.

The discovery led to the formation of urban strategies that reenergize the market in the heart of Stavanger, Norway. The current condition of the marketplace allow for many opportunities to create a greater sense of place through the definition of the edges and the linking of last or untapped connections within the surrounding urban context.

Existing Edges

Flows and Nodes

Green Space

Circulation 113

The Edge is the border or surface of a continuity in the urban fabric. It terminates space, providing containment and definition; it’s surface directs views and energy flows and provides enclosure.

114

Flow is the movement that occurs throughout the various urban systems. Flows can refer to physical movements in systems, or the perception of movement though the relationships between various systems.

Node is knot of energy. A place or group of places that acts as a point of exchange in flows of the urban floor. The size of the node can be a concentrated point of systems, or a larger district of flow interchanges.

The Urban Floor is an occupied, undulating plane that allow for the navigation through various strata.

In reinforcing the metaphor of the urban fabric, the Stitch serves to fasten or join multiple strata. Manifested architecturally stitches are vertical circulation point.

Intervention comes to introducing three elements: Urban Floor - Campanile - Cultural Armature 115

116

THE CAMPANILE The Campanile severs as a point of navigation within the city as well as a “needle in the methodology of urban acupuncture. The structure links to the urban floor and underground transportation systems below and provides a lookout space from which to view the city. Its twelve story height creates triangulation with the historic watchtower as well as the tower of the Stavanger Cathedral: the structure harvests wind energy through horizontal wind turbines, and can respond to different weather conditions with the sides of the top capable of opening or closing to respond to the sunny or rainy weather conditions. 117

The base of the campanile serves as an informal social area, serving both the employees of nearby office buildings as well as passerby on their way to their shops or subway below. The seating arrangement takes its form from the rigid of the granite paving of the nearby marketplace, and extrudes the planar grid in order to form a store seating structure with a variety of campanile rises through the center of the seating.
