Chester Pittman Oktaha High School The coaching resume of Chester Pittman is filled with successful ventures. His basketball teams at Oktaha High School have won 20-plus games for 21 consecutive seasons including two state championships (2005 & 2009). The Lady Tigers golf team just captured a third straight Class 2A state championship and have now won 28 consecutive events in a row. Yet, Pittman hesitates to accept the credit. “Any success I’ve enjoyed belongs to the kids and to this community,” affirmed Pittman, a native to the area growing up in the nearby communities of Stidham and Eufaula. “You can’t do it without the kids and in Oktaha, our community expects us to win.” Even though the rural Muskogee county community is surrounded by much larger school districts, the expectations never change according to Pittman. “Stability is a key to our fortunes,” nodded Pittman. “Mr. Needham, our superintendent,

and the people on the school board have been the same for years. It’s that consistency that makes a difference. Our administration, teachers and students, they all expect the best for everything here at Oktaha. Academically we do well along with athletics.”

“Winning is contagious,” said Pittman. “I don’t believe in the saying refuse to lose because no team or coach ever decides to lose. We start out believing and expecting to win in everything we do.”

Pittman credits his coaching success to the lessons he’s learned from other coaches. “When I first started, Ron McGuire at Stilwell helped me,” Pittman recalled. “I learned from Hoy Parsons who was a junior high coach for Jerry Ward at Webbers Falls. I’m the type of guy that wants to learn from those that are getting it done. Coach Jack Dobbins at Northeastern State taught me a lot too.” Pittman’s string of 21 years in a row with 20-plus seasons is most rewarding. “When you consider how tough our schedule is every year, it’s something special, said Pittman looking at the scorebook. “We measure our success upon being in the state tournament. So, this year we go 25-3 and win every tournament we played except the Area tournament. We didn’t have a great year.”

“The girls WON all 25 games and my coaching lost three,” winced Pittman. “But, hey, I’m looking forward to next year.” Golf is another chapter of Pittman’s success

of SUCCESS

story including the three state titles and current 28 tournament winning streak. “It’s still the kids and their hard work,” Pittman exclaimed. “We’ve got Golf Buddies, the GPS units that shows your course. We turn it on in Muskogee and you get Muskogee Country Club or Checotah and we get Fountainhead. I turn it on at school and the screen is blank,” laughed Pittman. “There’s no golf course. But, because it’s our expectation to be successful, we’ve got kids wanting to play golf and they’re good at it.”

Pittman has one other measure of success. “When I watch my own kids and my players grow up and become successful, I get my reward,” smiled the coach. “I’m competitive and just like the kids, I expect to win. And, when I see them being successful as adults, I just hope that I’ve had a little bit to do with it.” First National Bank of Muskogee congratulates Oktaha coach Chester Pittman for his accomplishments and encourages his continued spirit of success in sports and shaping the minds of today’s youth.

VYPE caught up with Shelby Winters of Muskogee High School to answer questions for Triple Play. After a humorous discussion and getting her answers, we posed the questions to Roughers softball coach Keith Coleman before asking Shelby’s dad, Mark Winters, for his answers. Who wins the match? Muskogee High School senior Shelby Winters is a member of the varsity girls’ softball team for the Roughers. She is a four year starter “on the bump” as a pitcher and recently was named to the East All-State team. Shelby, who always seems to make people laugh, recently graduated from Muskogee High School and will attend Northeastern State University and pursue a degree in Psychology. Shelby may be a comedian, but don’t ask her to meet a clown. She’s terrified of them.

Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. Muskogee Federal Credit Union celebrates achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.” Many words can be used to describe Jessica Patrick of Tahlequah. Competitive, determined, motivated…an encourager…all would be appropriate. Yet undeniably, the talented shortstop on the Tigers softball team has more than demonstrated the character to deal with any pitch she might face in softball and the game of life.

Tahlequah High School

Last October, as her team prepared for the fast-pitch playoffs, Patrick encountered an even tougher situation when her sister, Samantha, was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident leaving the high school senior to pick up the pieces with her three younger siblings. “After a bit, I realized I had to step up,” said Patrick. “I tried to explain to my two brothers and sister that bad things happen for a reason to good people. It’s what you do with these opportunities that will determine the outcome.” “My mom, Stacie, has encouraged me all my life not to give up,” replied Patrick. “She’s always challenged me to do my best everyday.” After attending the funeral, Patrick knew her teammates needed her that afternoon as the Tigers needed a win to reach the state tournament. “I had a responsibility to help any way I could so we could make it to state.” Patrick played one of her best games ever with a 3-for-3 performance in the Tigers’ victory. “We won it for Sam.” “Jessie was Jessie,” recalled Tahlequah head coach Matt Cloud. “She made some impressive plays with her glove too.” “I try everyday to be an example for others to follow,” nodded Patrick. “Shortstop in softball is a key position; you just have to take charge in whatever way you can.” “She gives all of us a boost of energy everyday,” Cloud affirmed. “Jessie brings a big smile to practice everyday that makes somebody laugh. No doubt, it’s her smile and how she lifts people up that has taught all of us what’s really important.” “Jessie’s a winner, on and off the field,” confirmed Cloud. “She only wants to do it the right way and expects others to hold her accountable in everything she does.”

Patrick’s efforts have brought rewards. After making All-Conference in basketball, Patrick was named to the Oklahoma All-State softball team and received a scholarship to Coffeyville Junior College to continue to play softball, the game she loves so much. Determination…Discernment…Endurance…all words that describe the character and heart of Jessica Patrick. And, there’s one more…A Winner...today and tomorrow.

of the Month Hutch Andersen Porter High School Hutch Andersen of Porter High School encountered a real game breaker on just the second day of practice when he tore the meniscus in his left knee bringing to an end his basketball season. “When the doctors told me I wouldn’t play,” pondered a frustrated Andersen, “I thought my whole world was about to crash. I asked…Why Me Lord?” “But that’s when I realized God’s plan for my life isn’t all about me,” nodded Andersen confidently. “This ordeal has helped me to understand that I am second and that He had a special reason for this to happen. God showed me through His word that He was holding me to a higher standard. And, what I thought at first was just persecution has now become a rewarding opportunity.” “I’ve learned how to be a witness for Christ,” smiled Andersen. “And, that by my actions everyday, God will use me to show others how much fun and confidence you can have by being a Christian. God is simply amazing... everyday moment…everyday.”

Huch’s favorite verse is...

1 Corinthians 9:25 (NIV): “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
