When discussing the attributes of any successful mom, time management is generally priority one. Ann Simmons takes it to a whole new level. Mother of five, Ann has seen her family grow up and develop as student-athletes. Two of her sons are Lincoln Christian football players Zack and Max Simmons. Both had stellar Lincoln careers and both signed to play football at Northeastern State University. Ann’s other son is Wes (25) and daughters Madi (16, Lincoln cheerleader) and Lindsey (22). All five children were athletes in high school and Ann was responsible for getting everyone where they needed to go. “We know that moms are all very busy, but what our mother had to do when we were all growing up is unbelievable,” said Zack. “Between my sisters cheerleading, my brothers and I playing all types of sports, and trying to run a household, mom is on top of her game.” “Mom has chores down to an art form,” said Max. “But she raised us all in a way that we help out one another, take care of ourselves, and we use that in a team environment around the house.” Ann was an unofficial taxi driver for the family until Wes turned 16, then it was his job to help with transportation. “With Lindsey and all of us younger kids, Wes had to help coordinate with mom,” said Zack. Father, Robert, has helped work hard to support a great family. But it is Ann who keeps it all together. “It is so great to see the development of our kids and we owe all that to Ann. She is our family MVP,” said Max. We know we can't compete with a mother's priceless gifts, that's why we sponsor VYPE's Mom of the Month winner. Elite 8 Basketball Team Has Me Wondering Which Team Was The Best? The 2012 Elite 8 team is featured in this issue of VYPE and while putting this great squad of basketball players together I couldn’t help but look back at some of the squads we’ve had in the past. The first team was 2006-07 featuring Alyssia Brewer, Haley Knifechief, Nick Sidorakis and Ken Holdman. In 2007-08 we featured Brewer for the second year with Jenni Bryan, Angel Goodrich, Rotnie Clarke and Bryson Pope. In our third year (08-09) it was Kevi Luper, Taleya Mayberry, Cameron Downing and Pope making some noise. The 2009-10 team featured another two-timer in Bryan with Downing and newcomers Carrington Fox and Tharone Chilton. Last year it was Savannah Carter, Jordan Schultz, Drew Wilson and Clay Wilson grabbing the honor of the Elite 8. This year we’ve selected what we believe is one of the top Elite 8’s of all-time. Jessica Washington-Jenks, Caitlyn Spurgeon-Vinita, Felecia Achilefu-East Central, Shannon Hough-Green Country, Juwan Parker-Booker T. Washington, J.C. Hartzler-Union, L.J. Ross-Victory, and C.J. Cole-Sperry make the 2011-12 Elite 8. Which is the best? Who knows, but this class will leave their mark on high school basketball in Oklahoma.

Frontier Conference swimming may dominate state again this year. From the boys and girls in Jenks to outstanding individuals like Erin Beu from Owasso, Erika McGovern at Union or Josh Deibert at Bixby, the Frontier Conference is coming for gold at state. Redskins 4X Champs Thanks for having the Union Redskins on another championship cover for VYPE. Those boys worked very hard to make it four-in-a-row and they deserve it. Elite 8 In year’s past the Elite 8 was announced in December. Is it going to come out soon? Basketball season is well underway and I haven’t heard anything about it yet.

Last month we printed the All-VYPE football teams and somehow a gremlin got into our system and changed the name of one of our Coach of the Year selections. Coach Aaron Meier from Catoosa was named to that list and we wanted to acknowledge him for a great season and wish him luck in 2012! New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez admits to using performanceenhancing steroids over a three-year period while playing for the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez was recruited out of high school to play for the University of Miami, but opted to sign with the Seattle Mariners at age 17.

James “Buster” Douglas knocked out “Iron” Mike Tyson in round 10 to win the World Heavyweight boxing title. The fight took place in the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo Japan. Entering the fight Douglas had a record of 29-4-1, while Tyson was a perfect 37-0.

James “Cool Papa” Bell was named to baseball’s Hall of Fame. Bell was born in 1903 in Starkville, Mississippi. He made his baseball debut in 1922 while playing with the St. Louis Stars of the Negro Leagues. Bell is still considered one of the best to ever play the game of baseball.

NASCAR celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Daytona 500. Penske Racing driver Ryan Newman took the checkered flag giving him his first and only victory at the Daytona 500. .

In defiance of the Cincinnati Reds’ policy of no facial hair, pitcher Rollie Fingers refuses to cut off his handlebar mustache and retires from baseball. Fingers finished his career with 1,299 strikeouts, 341 saves and was named 1974 World Series MVP.

F E B RUA RY 2 0 1 2 Mazzio’s Corporation and VYPE have teamed up to grant a $2,000 Scholarship for one boy and one girl to be presented in the June issue of VYPE. Here is how it will work: • Each month, VYPE will take nominations for an Athlete of the Month and a boy and girl will be elected the Mazzio’s Athlete of the Month. This will be a chance for boys and girls of all sports to be recognized for their performances. • Nominees can be mailed to scholarship. easternoklahoma@VYPE.com. Give the nominee’s name, school, sport and reasons you believe the athlete should be awarded the scholarship. • The nominees will need to be seniors this season but keep in mind that their accomplishments as juniors will be taken into consideration as well. • Each monthly recipient will be a candidate for the scholarship that will be awarded in June. • All sports will be eligible to have a nomination. • The male and female athletes who are chosen each month will have a pictured bio, highlighting their accomplishments, placed on this page.

Mitch Owens is a senior at Broken Arrow High School where he wrestles for the varsity team. Owens recently won his weight class at the Bixby Tournament and has proven to be a vital player during duals. Owens carries a 4.0 GPA in the classroom and has become a go-to wrestler for coach Shawn Jones. Owens and the Broken Arrow Tigers are looking forward to the state competition.

Erin Beu is a senior at Owasso High School where she’s part of the varsity swim team. During her senior season Erin has set and broken numerous records. She is undefeated in the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Butterfly. Recently Erin set the record at Owasso High School in the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Butterfly. Erin carries a weighted GPA of 3.76 and is considered one of the favorites at state. If she wins an event at state Erin will become Owasso’s first female state champion in swimming.

Well there you have it. Another Super Bowl halftime show goes completely wrong..First off, I think that as an active, onstage performer, Madonna actually looked her age (53). There needs to be a rule that anyone over the age of 50 is not allowed to perform at the Super Bowl unless they are in a timeless band. I.E. The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, etc. On top of that, Madonna brings along a couple of fad rappers with a sketchy persona and.... Wham-O!!! We all get the obscene gesture. To top it all off, instead of sticking exclusively to her iconic hits, Madonna finished with a new song. You know when you go to a concert and you are there to see a legend and the next thing you know, they are shoving their new, undesired music down your throat? Yeah, that was Madonna at the SB. The only highlight was the fact that LMFAO was included. Let’s face it, everyone loves those guys. This all brings memories of the best halftime shows, as well as the most notorious. Michael Jackson’s Super Bowl of 1993 is the greatest SB performance in my book, but hey, that is just my opinion. Brittney Spears in 2008 with N’Sync and Aerosmith was absolutely

career of Rhonda Fields as a player and coach is highlighted with numerous awards and honors. A graduate of Panama High School where she made All-State, two years at Eastern State College where she helped the team receive national recognition and the first female athlete to receive a full scholarship from Oklahoma State University, it’s easy to see why she is respected throughout the state of Oklahoma. Her passion spills over to her players and her knowledge of the game separates her from many of her peers and after 30-years of basketball Rhonda (Kite) Fields isn’t close to being done. VYPE: Thank you for taking time away from your busy schedule during the Tournament of Champions. What’s special about this tournament?

Fields: This is a tournament of learning and growing. Getting better is always a goal, but playing against such quality opponents can only serve to make you better. VYPE: Lets talk a little Basketball Theory 101. How many seasons have you coached now? Fields: This is my 30th season.

VYPE: We’ve seen a lot of changes in that time frame. How much has the game transitioned?

Fields: I played the 6-on-6 game, but colleges play 5-on-5. As an athlete and competitor you adjust your game to fit the rules you’re playing under. When I finished my playing career and started coaching I got back to the 6-on-6 game. VYPE: What was your first coaching job?

Fields: My first coaching job was at Vanoss High School. Vanoss is a small town just west of Ada. Then I went to East Central University for a while. After ECU I went to Locust Grove. Nine years I coached in 6-on-6. What happen was when it came mandatory for Class 5A and 6A to switch to 5-on-5, that’s when I left. I was at Sulphur then and left for 6A. People thought the girls didn’t have stamina for it, but they proved they do. This tournament (Tournament of Champions) is a great example. They have the stamina, strength and skills. VYPE: In those days there was almost a civil war over girls basketball!

Fields: That was a battle for a while. Why should or shouldn’t the girls change over. Once it changed that was really where I wanted to be. I love small towns, but once they switch I had to get to the 5-on5 game. VYPE: Is there a difference today between the 6A game and

small school basketball? Do schools like Ft. Gibson or Kansas have a shot in tournaments like this?

Fields: Sometimes in the larger schools we rely on more athleticism. In the smaller schools it’s such a community event. Everyone loves to support the school. And it’s so fundamentally sound. Expectations are different. Maybe more so. My kids learned a lot of good lessons playing smaller schools. VYPE: You seem to enjoy coaching athletes that are willing to commit themselves to the team.

Fields: Each of our coaches has an area of responsibility. Each addresses certain things in those areas that we’re not fundamentally sound in. At our last practice we had them take the court, run the drills then back into the locker room for some instructions from one coach handling a certain aspect of the game. They were in and out of the locker room several times with urgency and speed. The point was to be able to keep our focus and still remain calm under the pressure and under stressful circumstances. VYPE: Who’s the favorite to win Class 6A?

Fields: Jenks. We’re ranked third overall. Midwest City is good. The two teams ranked above us are tough, but we should be the top seed from this side of the state. Frontier conference is tough. We beat each other to death playing against Union, Owasso, Sapulpa, Broken Arrow and Muskogee. Keeping in mind the length of the season is so important, what’s required mentally and physically during a long season like ours is an important factor. The ups and downs, staying on an even keel. Stay on the goal. Last year we went on a 16 game winning streak and got our hearts broke by Union. We had to build from that and try to make a run in the playoffs. VYPE: Is their much of a rivalry in basketball with Union?

Fields: There’s a rivalry with Union in everything from the classroom to the library. There’s a lot of respect between the two schools. Both sides are very professional. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to be at Jenks. Both schools do it the right way. You don’t get to this level over night, so much goes into getting a program to this level. The kids have to buy in. It’s not just basketball or football. It’s bread in them to be the best. VYPE: Good luck with the rest of the season. Fields: Thank you.

A lot of it has to do with peer pressure. But just as there is negative peer pressure on student athletes to drink or take illegal drugs, there can also be positive peer pressure, like that displayed by a young man who attended Bethany High School. Here’s his story in his own words. My name is Chris Chamberlain and I play linebacker for the St. Louis Rams.

In high school I was fortunate to play quarterback and free safety and won a state championship while at Bethany. I was part of a group of seniors who had seen in previous years how the abuse of alcohol and other drugs had hurt our team. A group of us thought that

we could have had a chance to go further in playoffs and win more games if alcohol and drugs weren't part of our team’s lifestyle. So we came up with the idea that we wanted all the guys on our football team to sign a pledge to not drink, to not smoke, or do any of those things

“As a competitor, you don’t want to give your opponent any kind of edge; but if you use alcohol or other drugs you’re giving your competitor that edge. Chris’ coach, Rob Renshaw told me, “Chris and the guys did this all on their own. They had a players only meeting and announced the idea of the pledge. They were committed to a clean lifestyle. There was not going to be any drugs, any alcohol, any pot. They got

ral Roberts University Golden Eagles men’s basketball player Robert Aery not only enjoys being in the spotlight as a college athlete, but he treasures the importance of an education. Aery, a senior government and business administration major, is the recipient of Whole Person Scholarship from ORU. He will graduate in May with honors and will be attending law school in the fall. He has been a Golden Eagle Scholar and a Super Scholar. “Since the Whole Person Scholarship paid for my education, I was able to walk-on the basketball team,” Aery said. “Being a Whole Person Scholar automatically places you in a leadership role on campus. The administration has high expectations for these students, both in the classroom and in their other areas of involvement. As a WPS winner, I have been challenged as a student and as an athlete.” The Whole Person Scholarship Program was established at ORU to recognize students who model the Whole Person concept. Scholarship recipients will demonstrate the following: Christian Worldview, Lifestyle of Service, Academic Achievement, Leadership Ability, Vision to Make a Life-Changing Impact on Others and Healthy Lifestyle.

Any high school junior or senior or prospective transfer student may be nominated to the Whole Person Scholarship Program by a high school or college counselor or other school official, youth pastor, community leader or member of the ORU faculty, staff or alumni. All students nominated, invited and who subsequently participate earn scholarship dollars of varying amounts. Aery, a 2007 Holland Hall graduate, said he has always been attracted to ORU.

“Growing up in Tulsa, I had always been familiar with ORU,” he said. “In fact, my parents always loved the idea of me attending Oral Roberts. I graduated from Holland Hall in Tulsa in 2007. Following

graduation, I played basketball at a prep school in Massachusetts. I played my first year of college at Hendrix College in Conway, AR. I decided after my freshman year to transfer to a junior college to play. I heard of the Whole Person Scholarship during this recruiting process, so I decided just to apply and just see what would happen. Just before I was going to sign with the other school, I got the news that I had won.

“What attracted me to ORU was the Christian influenced education and the ability to go to school close to home. I felt like it would be a wonderful opportunity to attend a school that emphasized growing spiritually, as well as academically.”

Bixby High School How long have you been involved in FCA? I have been involved in FCA since about 6th grade when we started doing “Teens for Christ” in Bixby, and have loved it since. Who influenced you to join? It was not so much someone influencing me, but more of the fact that I was excited that a fellowship for kids at our school had been developed, and I jumped at the opportunity. A few of my friends and I had wanted something like that, and were excited when it came about. How has FCA made an impact in your life on the field and off the field? In football, it has impacted pregame greatly, since we pray as a team together. Off the field, it has made me more outgoing with my faith, and it continues to make me grow as an individual. How has your beliefs helped you as an athlete? It has definitely put things into perspective for me, knowing that God has a plan for whatever happens in a game, and I know that He is in control no matter what. What is your favorite bible verse and why? It’s a typical response, but Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It is my favorite because it holds true in every aspect of life. When you believe in the Lord, you can accomplish anything How have you used your beliefs or your association in FCA to help others or spread the word? Just by staying involved in church organizations outside of school, and passing along messages we hear in FCA to the other small groups. It is really one big connection. 31

heard an interesting question not too long ago concerning the Sapulpa wrestling team. The question was, “when was the last time the Chieftains won a dual state or state title in wrestling?” The answer…never.

Somewhat of a harsh response considering that over the years the program has seen a lot of success from individuals winning state titles who then go on to wrestle at the next level. But why is it that they do not have that dual state championship or that state title? It’s a question that head coach Biff Jones is trying to find an answer for. 34

Many consider Sapulpa somewhat of a hotbed for tough, gritty kids that get after it on the mat. There’s no shortage of want or desire coming out of Sapulpa. Which makes it more puzzling, but the answer to the puzzle may be closer to surfacing than ever before.

Coach Jones and his staff have groomed a solid group of young men to not only expect to win, but to work extremely hard for everything they get. The team has bought in and coach Jones knows the time to take advantage of that is now. “We have been very consistent this season. We need to

break out of the consistency and do something big. It’s time to do something big and that’s what we’re working on!” Big as in compete at duals and at state for a title. There’s no doubt coach Jones is as motivated today as he was his first day on the job. Maybe more so now.

But for something big to happen the wrestlers must commit to making it happen. Caleb Cotter is one of those committed to making this a season one for the record books. The 195-pounder is ranked No.1 overall in 6A and has his FEBRUARY 2012

sights set on a state title. Jordan Boland (138lb) is ranked No.2 and will help this team get closer to reaching that goal. Chase Duke (285lb) also carries that No.2 ranking in his weight class and is considered by many to be a favorite. Other wrestlers ranked in the top ten include Kristian Mendez (No.3, 160lb), Justin Barrett (No.4, 145lb), Shea Conley (No.5, 132lb), Ryan Heiden (No.6, 120lb), Easton Jones (No.9, 106lb) and Sam Johnson (No.10, 220lb).

“Caleb Cotter is undefeated at 26-0. Chase Duke only has one loss. Our sophomores have been great this season. Shea Conley, Ryan Heiden and Kristian Mendez are having great

years. As well as Easton Jones. Our sophomores can make a big impact if they have a breakout post seasons. It’s time,” said coach Jones. That big season could be now and adding Sapulpa to the list of dual and state champions could come sooner than later. The pride around this program is measureable and the work ethic the Chieftains bring to the mat is noticeable in the way they wrestle. Coach Jones is a proven winner and continues to grow and develop great wrestlers in Sapulpa. It won’t be long before the Chieftains add their name to the storied list of programs that win dual state and state championships.

enks, Union, Bixby, Broken Arrow, Owasso, Sapulpa, Sand Springs and Riverfield School all made this a competitive meet as members of each team prepare for state competition in Oklahoma City.

When the Lady Trojans hit the water it was with Montana Gaffney, Hailey Jensen and Veronica Threadgill, three of the top swimmers in the state. Gaffney won the 100-free and the 200-free while Jensen took top honors in the 100-back. Threadgill placed first in the grueling 500-free. Then the relay teams won both the 200-free relay and the 400-free relay. Kathy Bliss, Kelsey Landreth, Veronica Threadgill, Montana Gaffney and Hailey Jensen comprise the two teams which dominated both events. Bliss competes in the 200 and Jensen in the 400. Erin Beu of Owasso showed her speed in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly winning both events.

The Lady Redskins joined the party by winning the 200-medley relay. Erika McGovern was a part of that team, but she also grabbed two individual wins in the 200-IM and the 100-breast. 38

The Jenks boys were solid the entire night winning four events including the 200-free and 400-free relays. Ian Meehle-der for Jenks won the 100-free with a time of 48.98. Jake Burris won the 100-back and both Meehle-der and Burris competed on the relay teams. Paden Scribner, Burris, Meehle-der and Colby DeWeese may be the quickest relay team in the state. Union’s Chase Davis had a big night in the 100-fly winning with a time of 53.80 and the 200-IM. Colton Posey of Union also won the 100-breast. Ironman Eastman Holloway won the 500-free in under the 5-minute mark. Bixby’s Josh Deibert smoked the 50-free with a time of 22.46, then swam with the winning 200-medley team that included Trevor Thompson, Bryan Lee, Deibert and Robbie Anderson.

Injuries and defections decimated Oklahoma’s running back corps in 2011. As the season concluded, the Sooners coaching staff shook the bushes looking for suitable candidates. Oklahoma assistant coach Cale Gundy even made a special trip to Jenks High School to let Sooners’ prized recruit Alex Ross know he was the No. 1 running back. It wasn’t something the Sooners needed to do, but Ross appreciated it. “It was nice,” Ross said of the gesture. “I understood where they were coming from. They need more than one or two running backs. I love the fact that they came to see me.”  Given the fact that much of Ross’ senior season was cut short with a high ankle sprain and broken collarbone, he appreciated the gesture all the more.

“They didn’t have to come in and see me,” he said. “The fact that they did only re-emphasized to me that I made the right choice.”  Ross, who rushed for more than 1,500 yards his junior season, admits it was difficult being on the sideline in 2011. “I got to play in the Backyard Bowl,” said Ross, who rushed for more than 130 yards against Union in the Backyard Bowl and finished with nearly 700 rushing yards for the season. “You always want to help your team your senior year. You want to go out with a bang. It was tough, but I tried to involve myself as much as possible from the sidelines.”  It was his teammates that helped him get through the difficult times. “They reassured me of how much of a help I was,” Ross said. “They were there picking me up.” Jenks coach Allan Trimble said the fact that Cale Gundy has been so forthcoming with Alex was appreciated.  “Cale has been professional, thorough and very good in his dealings with Alex,” Trimble said. “He’s followed up with the family, our staff and the school’s academic staff. He is very straight-forward and thorough in his recruiting. “Early on, they talked with Alex about signing only one running back. But with the injuries and players leaving, they’ve had to go recruit more.”  Ross has only recently starting running. A member of the Jenks track team, he will compete in the 100 and 200-yard dash and the 4x100 and 4x400 relay events this spring.

“I just now started back running,” he said. “I feel so good right now, I love it. I’m starting over and I’m kind of glad about it. It gives me goal.” Ross said he plans to join the Sooners in June and attend summer school classes and workouts.  “I’m excited,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it. I’m excited about the next level of learning. I’ve always enjoyed learning.”  Ross’ style of running is similar to that of former Sooner great Adrian Peterson. “I like running between the tackles and over guys but if I get to the outside, I’ll run past you.” Outside of football, Ross said he spends little time talking about the sport. Maybe it has something to do with the injuries his senior year, maybe not. “I can’t rewind time,” he said. “All I can do is look forward to what lies ahead.”

Boys Soccer The season started a little slow with a 0-2-1 conference record, but with the SPC tournament looming close, the Dutch have put together a five game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 18-1 in those games. Hopefully the late season surge gets them in position for a spot in Division 1 tournament. Players having a good season include Nick Rohleder, Jackson Buchanan, Patrick Lopez and Phillip White.

Girls Soccer The girls are fighting hard against some very tough competition this year, yet they are giving some of the top teams in the conference a run for their money. Allie Ramsey, Erika Celoni and Lily Swab have been doing a good job this season of putting the ball in the net. Girls Basketball The girls basketball team is where they expected to be with a 21-2 record at this time, and 31 consecutive wins in SPC play. In one of the most exciting games of the year, the Dutch trailed Dallas Greenhill most of the game, but with the score tied 44-44 and only eight seconds remaining, Sophie Jefferson made a key steal followed by clutch free throws by Kelsey Arnold and Paris Townsend, securing the victory 48-44. Greenhill was previously undefeated in conference play and the win should secure the top seed for Holland Hall in Division 1 in the SPC Tournament. Boys Basketball The boys have struggled some on the court this season dealing with a combination of youth and going against some very strong competition. Recently things have gone better with back to back wins over Casady 58-47 and Cistercian 62-56. Junior Zack Rogers has had a strong season for the Dutch.

Broken Arrow tight end/defensive end is spending his final few months of high school relaxing. “Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of nothing,” Veatch said with a laugh. “I work out, go to school, do homework and relax. I’m enjoying my down time right now.” Veatch is one of 30 top recruits in Oklahoma who signed national letters of intent on National Signing Day on February 1st. A three-star recruit, Veatch signed with Oklahoma State. He chose the Cowboys over Baylor, Houston, Kansas, Oregon State, Tulsa and Wyoming. Recruited as a tight end, Veatch confided he

might look into the possibility of playing defense end. “I’d like to play defense, I like hitting people,” Veatch said. Growing up, Veatch said he wasn’t a fan of any particular school. “I would just band-wagon it with whomever my friends liked,” he said. “I talked with a bunch of schools but when coach (Joe) Wickline called to offer, I jumped at it. I’m excited to get there in June and get going. “Everyone in Stillwater is nice. The coaches are great. They have great facilities.” Veatch helped Broken Arrow reach the Class 6A state championship game this season. “It

was a great senior year,” he said. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better other than two more points (Tigers lost to Union, 23-22). “The coaches were really big in the offseason about leadership. They wanted us coaching up the young guys. It was a fun year. I’ll remember it forever.” Ending his high school career on the field (Boone Pickens Stadium) he will play on in college wasn’t lost on Veatch. “It’s an awesome atmosphere,” he said. “I was there for bedlam and it was crazy.” In his spare time, he enjoys disc golf and cooking. “I like to cook breakfast,” he said. “I cook all the time. I fix pancakes, waffles, and omelets. I love eggs. I can eat a carton of eggs at a time.”

Oklahoma State made a late push on Owasso star Keon Hatcher, but the 6-foot2 wide receiver stayed true to his Aug. 1 commitment. The state’s leading receiver in catches (100), receiving yards (1,610) and receiving touchdowns (20) said he was flattered when OSU receivers coach Kasey Dunn called to say the Cowboys were offering a scholarship. “Arkansas offered me in July,” Hatcher said. “I was pretty strong with them. OSU came in in November and came on pretty

strong. My first official (visit) was to OSU on Jan. 15. I had a really good time. I liked everything about OSU and felt comfortable there. “I took my official to Arkansas on (Jan.) 20th and as soon as I stepped on campus, it struck me, this was the place for me.” Hatcher said the Razorbacks’ rabid football fans helped seal the deal. “First I got to meet the players, they were all great,” Hatcher said. “The fans were amazing. We went to a gymnastics meet and afterward, they had a pep rally for (the recruits). The fans were going crazy, they had posters for all the players. It was nuts. Then we went to The Catfish Hole to eat and the fans were going crazy there too. The fans are all about Arkansas football. The fans really sold it.

Hatcher said he is spending the spring working out with the Rams track team to improve is overall speed. “I’m working out, getting stronger, getting faster,” he said. “The SEC (Southeastern Conference), that’s grown man football. The plan is for me to go into Arkansas and compete for a spot right away. I have to grow up. I have to go in and work hard and show them I want it.” Hatcher said he was flattered that OSU made a run at him. “It surprised me a little bit because I had committed so early,” Hatcher said. “Even though I had one scholarship offer already,

OSU gave me options. It felt good to be wanted.” Hatcher said he plans to major in sports marketing.

The student-athlete receiving the award is highlighted in the monthly edition of VYPE Oklahoma and will see themselves in the year-end edition of VYPE Oklahoma as the Top Dog Team.

Cole has been outstanding all year for Sperr, giving the Pirates a real shot at state in 2012. The silky smooth swingman is one of the more sought after recruits in the area. Cole does it on and off the court, with activities and a stellar academic resume.
