Goodbye 2010, Hello 2011 There’s no denying that 2010 was a year to remember and as 2011 rapidly approaches we take a look back at football, softball, cross country and volleyball. Every year VYPE selects the top players in the state for the ALL-VYPE Teams from all the fall sports. Who made the 1st and 2nd teams in football and who were the standouts in cross country and volleyball? This year, for the first time, VYPE has named an ALL-VYPE Cheer squad for Eastern and Central Oklahoma. New for this season is the ALL-Oklahoma Team in football. These are the best players in the state regardless of school location and class size. Social media outlets have grown existentially in recent years and student athletes are using places like facebook and twitter to stay in touch, but they’re not the only ones relying on social networks to stay connected. More parents are getting involved and staying connected through the same avenues their kids are using. We questioned four moms about juggling schedules and make all the events! The Tulsa Youth Hockey Association is geared up for another season as teams from Bishop Kelley, Broken Arrow, Jenks and Union face off in a tough battle for Tulsa ice supremacy. Check out the story by Wayne Bunch on all four teams and what the league has to offer. Recently Rod Coulter and I had the opportunity to visit Academy Central Elementary School and speak to the fifth grade classes of Mrs. Brandy Roberts and Ms. Karen Reed about the magazine. We passed out a few magazines and answered questions about what it takes to create our publication. Both classes were well prepared with questions and we really enjoyed our time visiting with the students. Here’s a list of all the kids we were able to see.

oocerCity has kicked off its winter season of action with Winter Fest I followed by Winter Fest II, according to general manager Kerry Shubert. SoccerCity located at 5817, E. Ave, in Tulsa began Winter Fest on Nov. 8th and runs through January 24th, according to Shubert. A Winter Fest Tournament will be held on January 21st thru the 23rd. “We have over 60 teams from all across Oklahoma participate,” said Shubert. “It’s a pretty big deal. We usually have around 60 teams participate in the tournament.” SoccerCity is an indoor facility with 60,000 square feet of space. Originally a 48,000 facility received a complete overhaul in 2005 and with new construction, which was completed in early 2010, with the addition of two more soccer fields. Also included in the update was remodeled concession stands, which serves a variety of food. “We now have a total of four fields for the players,” said Shubert. “We have two large fields that measure 180 x 80 and two small fields which measure 30 yards wide by 20 yards wide. They are all field turf surfaces,” said Shubert. Fans attending soccer matches can view the action through
tempered glass that runs full length of the soccer field or they can view the players from an overhead mezzanine area. You can also view the action on one of several televisions mounted in the mezzanine. The addition of the two fields along with new concession areas makes SoccerCity one of the premier indoor soccer facilities in the country. SoccerCity also has a Little Kicker program this winter for young players 18 months to 9-years of age. “We have over 400 kids in this program that are involved,” said Shubert. It’s a program that teaches soccer skills in a noncompetitive environment. Classes are established for each age group. Winter Fest II begins on January 24th with over 400 teams expected to participate, according to Shubert. Information about programs and tournaments at SoccerCity can be obtain on their web site at SoccerCityTulsa.com “Anyone interested in playing soccer and having a good time will enjoy themselves at SoccerCity,” said Shubert. “We have lots of kids participating and they have a good time.” •

Should Stillwater Be Title Town? The OSSAA has made a lot of schools happy in negotiating a terrific deal with Oklahoma State University and Stillwater. However, there are some uninformed, disgruntled fans who need to be educated on why.

By Austin Chadwick ince his appointment to the OSSAA executive secretary position in 2009, Ed Sheakly and the association has found itself in a much more stable position with decision-making. Though not everyone will agree with decisions that are made, the facilitation of those decisions comes from Sheakley and his staff. Then those recommendations are always presented to the OSSAA board (Comprised of Oklahoma high school athletic directors) and put to a vote. One of the more crucial decisions that was made and approved by a very competent OSSAA board was the decision to utilize the facilities at Oklahoma State University and Stillwater High School for all state championship football games until 2013. When the OSSAA has to decide on venues for any event, tournament, championship, or event, there generally comes a facilities rental fee. With the countless times that these have to be negotiated, the OSSAA finds themselves trying to make the best decisions for their member schools. “We worked very hard to present a situation to Oklahoma State University and the city of Stillwater to be the destination for all football state championship games,” said Sheakley. “The logistics of the deal were definitely in the best interest of the member schools.” Those logistics included an extremely favorable agreement on facilities rental and allows the OSSAA to raise more funds for the schools involved. For each championship game, once the expenses are paid, the two visiting teams competing will receive 35% of the rev-share. The OSSAA receives the remaining 30% for operations. By far, the largest expense for the championships is the facility rental. This generally falls in the category of $10,000-$14,000 per game. Another facet that needs to be brought to attention is that the OSSAA also takes care of the travel for the visiting teams. If they have to travel
far enough, then meal per diem is dispersed and, in extreme cases, hotel per diem is dispersed. This is all in addition to the 35% rev-share that the school will receive after the conclusion of the game. “We understand that once in a while we are going to get two teams that are very close in proximity,” said Sheakly. “And there could be a case that those two teams could draw better in another location. That was all taken into consideration and the unusual nature of this situation was considered, but couldn’t be justified in altering agreement to utilize OSU and Stillwater.” Union and Jenks played in the 2010 state championship at Oklahoma State’s Boone Pickens Stadium and though they could have drawn better at the University of Tulsa, the smart move for the OSSAA (and Jenks and Union) was to play it in Stillwater. “Many can argue either way in a case for Jenks and Union, but this will be best for all schools financially,” said Sheakly. “Even the small schools will have an opportunity to play in Stillwater. Class B and C will be at Stillwater High School.” The OSSAA is building a brand for Oklahoma high school football. And currently that brand is Stillwater. Kids and coaches for the next few years will have it as a season-long goal to reach Stillwater. “We can’t thank the people at Oklahoma State enough for listening to our reasoning and allowing us to present a fantastic agreement that will help benefit all.” Considering that if you take 6A out of the equation (Union and Jenks regularly reach the state finals), the remaining Classes do a good job in parity and turn over title contenders about every year. With this, the mystique of going to Stillwater will continue to build. In the case of Union and Jenks, one can make the argument that traveling to Stillwater may be unnecessary when the two happen to play against each other, but in the grand scheme of things, Stillwater is the smartest move for the association and the member schools. Much like small school basketball players and teams strive to reach The Big House (Oklahoma State Fairgrounds Arena in OKC), perhaps the same can be said for all football players and teams about getting to Stillwater. Or should we call it “Title Town?”
TV Agreements:
The OSSAA also has a TV agreement with Fox Sports that allows the regional network to broadcast semifinals and all state championship games. If Fox Sports does not pick up a game for whatever reason, then they will either contract a local company to pick it up for them, or they will allow the OSSAA to put that particular game out for a very reasonable bid. •

Dec. 1st, 1951 University of Mississippi fullback Arnold Boykin had the game of his life today against Mississippi State University. Boykin rushed for all seven of the Rebels touchdowns and led Mississippi to a 49-7 win over their in-state rivals.
Dec. 4th, 1971 Oklahoma running back Greg Pruitt rushed for 189-yards as the Sooners rolled past rival Oklahoma State University, 58-14. The rushing total for the day gave Pruitt 1,665-yards on 178 attempts, which gave him an average per carry of 9.35-yards. That mark set a new NCAA record.
Dec. 4th, 1987 Boston Celtic legend Larry Bird finally missed a free throw after hitting 59 in a row. Bird, in a game against the Detroit Pistons, missed number 60, and the Celtics lost the game, 128-105. The mark of 59 straight free throws was only the fourth longest streak in NBA history.
Dec. 10th, 1971 New York Mets pitcher Nolan Ryan was traded to the California Angels for infielder Jim Fregosi. Ryan would go on to a Hall of Fame career and recently became the owner of the Texas Rangers who went to the World Series for the first time in franchise history. he world of recovery drinks and sports drinks is an extremely competitive market. Some sports drinks promise a quick recovery while others seem to suggest that by drinking their formula you’ll become a better athlete. What if the best recovery drink was always right in front of you, you just didn’t realize it? Well there’s a new player stepping up to the front of the line. Chocolate milk. Yep, the favorite drink of elementary school kids everywhere.
Chocolate milk is gradually becoming the choice of many trainers at the college and high school level. Take the University of Tulsa for example. Head Athletic Trainer David Polanski implemented chocolate milk a couple of years ago and has seen the results. “Based on recent research chocolate milk has been shown to help athletes refuel exhausted muscles after exercise. Therefore we decided to make chocolate milk available for our athletes as a recovery drink. Chocolate milk possesses a great mix of carbohydrates, protein, and vitamins. After athletes work out, everything they need in recovery can be obtained with chocolate milk. Plus, economically it is much more efficient and for our athletes who are working out away from campus, chocolate milk is very easy to find at any convenient or grocery store.” Why chocolate milk? Compared to water and sports drinks, it has double the carbohydrate and protein content, which is perfect for replenishing tired muscles. Chocolate milk is high in water content, which replaces fluids lost as sweat helping prevent dehydration. It packs a nutritional bonus of calcium and includes just a little sodium and sugar, which are additives that help recovering athletes retain water and regain energy. So should you stop drinking water? Of course not. Chocolate milk is not a replacement for good old-fashioned water. And it’s not for every athlete. This is really for the full-time athlete. Weekend warriors will not see much of a benefit from replacing sports drinks with chocolate milk, however those athletes in high school and college are seeing the benefits. These types of athletes need to replace carbohydrates, proteins and calories to maintain a certain level of performance.
Some would say milk after a workout sounds terrible, but we’re talking about chocolate milk. Think of it as a supplemental shake. Granted you can’t get it in orange or blueberry flavor…yet.

When people think of Boise State, the “Smurf Turf” is usually what they think of. Now a local swimmer will be thinking of it as her home pool. ~ By Rod Coulter | Photos by Tracey Posey

M
egan and Morgan Myers are sisters (33 months apart) who are teammates at Union High School as well as the USA Swimming Club. Megan (Sr.) looks to finish off her high school career on a strong note after being named Female Metro Swimmer of the Year in 2009 by the Tulsa World. Morgan, (Fr.) though she has different strengths than her sister, is hoping to have the same type of success as Megan in her high school career. They feel as if Union, coached by David Lynn, has an opportunity to compete for a State Championship this year. Both girls were introduced to the water at a young age through the water babies program. Morgan started swimming at age four, Megan at age six through the Tulsa Parks and Recreation program held at Indian Springs. They also spent countless hours in their Grandparent’s back yard in Carthage Missouri honing their skills.
:: HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
Megan and Morgan are the daughters of Dennis and Lori Myers. •
DECEMBER 2010
Their first meet this year was against Jenks where the sisters were teamed up on a relay. Megan was anchoring, so she told her sister if she got her a lead, she would buy her desert of her choice. That was motivation enough, Morgan got her a big lead and they were victorious.
::
Even though they are sisters, they have different talents and likes in the pool. Morgan prefers the 50, 100, 200 and 500freestyle. Megan goes more for the distance, with her favorites being the 500, 1,000, 1,650 freestyle and the 400 IM. Morgan has a stronger kick while Megan has a quicker turnover with her arms. What they do have in common they are both very disciplined and are both A students. They enjoy Union Football, concerts, Nebraska football games with their folks and spending free time at Grand Lake. There isn’t always a lot of free time though. During the school year their practice schedule is an hour and a half twice a week in the mornings and dry land practice one hour the other three mornings. Then there is afternoon practice for two hours Monday thru Friday and then again Saturday mornings.
VYPE.COM
When asked about recruiting and the trips that she took, Megan rattled off Oregon State, TCU, Nebraska, Boise State, Iowa State and an unofficial visit to Drury in Springfield Missouri. Probably one of the most fun visits was Nebraska. She got to go to a football game and meet Dr. Tom Osborne. (The bonus is she is a Nebraska football fan). After all was said and done, it was down to Drury and Boise State. Drury is obviously much closer and have won back-to-back Division II National Championships, but Boise left a very favorable impression. Megan said, “it just felt right”. There is a very strong community support for the student athletes as well as the campus being in a beautiful setting. “We were impressed with the program and also were excited about the brand new business school scheduled to open in 2012.” Coach Kristin Hill was very helpful in making her decision. Megan is following Boise State closely this year, to see if the times of the freshman and sophomores decrease though the season. If she can continue to improve in the pool, which will help Megan, her two primary goals at Boise State; qualify for the NCAA Championship and to get her degree in business.
When asked about her choices, one thing that was brought up is that neither University of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State offer swimming at a collegiate level. What that does is obviously make the high school swimmer look out of state if they want to swim at the next level and probably puts some of the facilities behind those of other states since there is not the need for local development of talent to feed the state universities to field a team. It probably doesn’t get the exposure it may get in other states. Just think how different Oklahoma high school football might be like if there was no collegiate football played in the state?

The Redskins won for the sixth time in nine years and have won against the Trojans on four of those occasions. Jenks was led by prolific quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen, who had perhaps one of the best seasons as any quarterback in Oklahoma. The senior and Jenks running back Alex Ross led Jenks to the title game with plenty of help from Trent Martin at linebacker, Zach Langer, and Tate Beer.

The Redskins proved many people wrong in beating the explosive Jenks squad. Falling 21-3 to the Trojans in the first half, the Skins showed resiliency in coming back to win 50-47 in one of the classics of the rivalry. Kale Pearson was the player of the game with 401 total yards and four total TDs. Christian Hood, who played every down on offense and defense, had 199 yards on six catches and two TDs to lead the Skins attack, scoring the gamewinning touchdown with :39 seconds remaining. Stephon Weaver threw to Hood on a double-pass trick play that will go down in Redskins history. Blace Walser led the defense with Brentom Todd playing the game of his life. Also Jalen Hearron and Kendal Holmes provided the Skins with offensive firepower. “This team showed some serious toughness and they showed it throughout the playoffs and especially in this title game,” said coach Kirk Fridrich.

Daunte Burge had 126 yards rushing for the Cardinals while Derrick Alexander and the Hornet defense stifled the Cardinal passing attack. “We worked extremely hard during the season,” said Hornet coach Durrell Hall, who won last year’s 4A title with Star Spencer. “I promised them I would take off my ring from last year once we won this season.”

Katie Brown Sallisaw High School As co-captain of the high school cheerleading team, Katie Brown often finds herself in the middle of busy schedule at school and at home. The multi-talented and energetic senior at Sallisaw High School finds answers to her many questions through her relationship with Jesus Christ. “It’s the basis for guiding my thoughts and actions,” said Katie. “Although I’m not big into controversy, I know that whenever I’m challenged with a tough decision, God is always my answer.”
In addition to her many friends at school, Katie wants to be a role model for others. “I want those around me to be able to see that knowing Christ is something special to me,” said Katie. “With my two brothers and sister, I want them to know that what I believe in is what I live by. And, with everything trying to drag you away, being a Christ like example isn’t always easy. Still, I want everyone to see that knowing Him isn’t hard but its fun.” Katie recently earned Oklahoma All-State Cheerleader honors as well as being selected as Miss SHS by a vote of classmates as the best all around senior. A member of the National Honor Society, Katie has achieved a 3.8 GPA and plans to attend college and continue her cheerleading talents. Katie’s favorite scripture verse is Hebrews 11:1
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

eing the catalyst of the family, the mother is always the one who seems to facilitate the schedules, ensure punctuality, facilitate meals, and make sure athletes are prepared. We took the response we get from four of the most active mothers in the Tulsa area and we let them tell their story as to what it takes to get the job done.
CYNTHIA KRAGTHORPE
Cynthia Kragthorpe has three boys, one playing football in college (Chris), one as the starting quarterback for Holland Hall (Brad), and one as a sophomore quarterback at Metro Christian (Nik). Her Husband Steve has been a collegiate and professional coach for many years and the travel and constant moving has been a challenge that Cynthia and her three boys have overcome extremely well. Being the wife of a collegiate coach and a mother of three athletes can’t be easy, but Cynthia is a very special mother who is able to handle everything in stride.
Major Challenges: The biggest challenges for me have been trying to get to all of the games. With Steve not coaching this year and Chris, our oldest who is redshirting, it has been easier. Last year I went to 18 football games in the month of September alone. With the boys at different schools and Steve and Chris involved in college football, the travel was pretty hectic last season. But even though it has been challenging, it's always been fun and exciting.
What's extraordinary about your kids? They are very
flexible. In our family, you just kind of go with the flow. We have lived in 10 different places since we were married 23 years ago. We have made some great friendships and memories in all
of those spots. All three of the boys were born in different states and we have lived all over the country. They have done a great job of adapting to the new situations that we have gone to.
F E AT U R E
How do you keep up with the schedule? It can be pretty hectic at times, but
with Steve being home this season and help of family and friends it has made it easier this year. Either Steve or myself were at each of the boys’ games and sometimes we would swap at halftime so we could see both of them play.
Does social media help you balance their schedules and communicate with other parents? With today’s technology, it definitely makes it easier to communicate and get information on all of the practices and other events not just games. It's a good thing that I have an unlimited cell phone plan.
MICHELLE OPHUS
Michelle Ophus is the mother of four that includes All-State volleyball player Carissa Ophus and Caleb Ophus an eighth grade footbal player. from Jenks. Carissa is highly regarded as one of the best players around and her hectic schedule has always had the management of Michelle. The management of all four children is a whole other story.
Major Challenges: “There were times
when I had four children playing at one time in different locations which created some real interesting dilemmas. I wanted to be at every one of their games but unless I figured out a way to clone myself, it just wasn’t going to happen. My husband and I recruited friends and family just to make sure someone was at each game cheering them on.

Major challenges: “Trying to make sure Brooke doesn't over do it. Playing high school softball, basketball and competitive softball is a lot for a 17-year-old body to deal with. Making sure she eats right and keeps in shape so she can do all the things she wants to do. She is even playing dodge ball every Wednesday night.”

much time, effort, and discipline as it takes to be a high school athlete is extraordinary. However, what I especially love about Carissa and Caleb is their tenacity, toughness and integrity. They are both tough competitors but they never let it compromise their integrity as players or the reputation of those they represent. Win or lose I am always so proud of them. Of course I like it more when they win!
ROBBIE SCOTT
Robbie Scott is a mother of two and wife to Nathan Hale’s baseball coach, Floyd Scott. The youngest of her children is Brooke, an All-State softball player at Broken Arrow and competes in basketball as well. Older brother Dustin wrestled for the Tigers last year and is wrestling in college now. With schedules flying around like a whirlwind, Robbie keeps things settled with a great attitude and a smile.

What’s extraordinary about your kid? “Any young person willing to devote as
involved in my kids’ activities and it has created some very special times between us. My iPhone is permanently attached to me with my computer linked calendar, my minute-by-minute event alerts and continuous email updates. I don’t know what I ever did without it.”

F E AT U R E
What's extraordinary about your kid? “Brooke is one of a kind, she is full of
energy, very optimistic, stubborn, dedicated and loves to play sports. She is very serious about what she does and takes it personally if she doesn't do well. She is her own worst critic. Brooke thinks she can take on anything that is presented to her and she will always apply herself to the extreme to accomplish whatever it is. She is a great kid with a good attitude.”
How do you keep up with her schedule? “Well, I must say it’s much easier
since she drives now. I no longer have to change my clothes in my car at stoplights trying to get her places.
DENEEN PENNINGTON
Deneen Pennington is the mother of Union AllState cheerleader Dea Pennington. Cheerleading is a whole other monster to tackle when it comes to preparation and support. No one does it better and the craziness that is high school cheerleading is full of moms who have to make the sacrifice.
What is extraordinary about Dea?
“Dea was a USAG gymnast for years when she came to Union’s gymnastics squad in the 6th grade. She earned a varsity letter when she was 11 and also lettered in 7th grade. At the end of that year, Union terminated the gymnastics program and Dea moved into cheer (where else can you use those tumbling skills). Before we knew it, she had made the varsity squad her 9th grade year and we have enjoyed it ever since. Union has been very successful in Dea’s time on the squad with regional and national titles every year.”
How do you keep up with the schedules?
“We receive a monthly calendar and weekly update emails which are sent to the booster club parents by the coaching staff. In addition, I, as the booster club president, also send weekly updates about the parents’ activities and fundraising. The girls are required to do community service. I was amazed when we started this sport. It does become a lifestyle.”

have more kid’s, but for our market, we are average,” said Baker. “During Olympic years we really come back strong with a lot of interest from the kids.”
Three of the four teams are coached by former professional players, all of whom played for the Tulsa Oilers. Sly Naud coaches the Jenks club, Tom Karalls guides Broken Arrow and Chris Simms coaches the Bishop Kelley Comets. Ty Smith, who coaches the Union team, has played semi-pro hockey and currently is a member of the Tulsa Rampage. All the coaches agree that the high school players have “an excellent work ethic and are enthusiastic and take pride in playing.”
CODY SHARROCK JENKS The Tulsa Youth Hockey League has had its ups and downs during the 20-plus years it has been in existence, according to Warren Baker, president of the TYHA, who has been involved in the program for 15 years.
Karalls, who has coached for several years, said the association has had “its ups and downs” adding, “the group is getting younger kids taking part. I think in general the league is very healthy and going well,” said Karalls. “The quality of hockey has improved on the high school level.” The four schools play 18 games during the season and then a tournament at the end of the season. The winning team then moves on to the USA Hockey national tournament if

Baker believes the program remains a viable influence on the youth in the metropolitan Tulsa area and displays an excellent brand of hockey. “The kids are all very excited about playing hockey and have a good skill level,” said Baker.
One problem the TYHA has run into is ice time, according to Baker. All the groups play and practice at the Oilers Ice Center at 61st and Mingo. “I am acquiring all the ice time I can buy,” said Baker. “There is just no more ice available, since there is only one facility. That’s the main issue. We are utilizing every hour I can get,” said Baker.

to defray the cost of such a trip with fund raising and other things,” said Baker.
BROOKS ROBINSON BROKEN ARROW
A year ago Union, which won the Tulsa title went to Chicago to play in the national tournament and according to Baker, “played very well.” Coach Naud believes the four coaches help draw the kids to the TYHA because of their “experience in pro hockey.” “You get to work with the kids for 3-to-4- years on the junior varsity and varsity level and see them mature as young men. They are excited to be here as a freshman and if we can relay some of life’s experiences and give them exposure what we have been through as ex-professional players, hopefully they can pickup a few things we can translate to them,” said Naud. Smith, who has battled through two ACL injuries to continue to play with the Rampage and coach the Union squad said, “The kids are very enthusiastic and take a lot of pride in playing and pride in their school. The play here between all the schools is very competitive and a lot of that can be attribute to the type of coaching they get with the Tulsa Youth Hockey Association.”
desired. However, the club is required to handle all the costs of playing in the tournament. According to Baker the state’s governing body, Oklahoma Amateur Hockey, pays a small amount of the cost. “Most of the financial responsibility falls on the parents and club

The 2010 Kiefer girls fastpitch softball team won the first district title in school history this season. Led by coach Bain and coach Capehart, the Lady Trojans made school history by achieving a goal they set for themselves at the start of the season.

While competing against the best teams in the state Jenks won with a 7 point lead on Putnam City North who has held the title since 2008. With the event being held on Jenks homecoming weekend nothing could have been better than winning the state title. Edmond North received 3rd place while Union placed 4th.
