AUGUST 2015 Mazzio’s Corporation and VYPE have teamed up to grant a $2,000 Scholarship for one boy and one girl to be presented in the June issue of VYPE. Here is how it will work: • Each month, VYPE will take nominations for an Athlete of the Month and a boy and girl will be elected the Mazzio’s Athlete of the Month. This will be a chance for boys and girls of all sports to be recognized for their performances. • Nominees can be mailed to scholarship. Oklahoma@VYPE.com. Give the nominee’s name, school, sport and reasons you believe the athlete should be awarded the scholarship. • The nominees will need to be seniors this season but keep in mind that their accomplishments as juniors will be taken into consideration as well. • Each monthly recipient will be a candidate for the scholarship that will be awarded in June. • All sports will be eligible to have a nomination. • The male and female athletes who are chosen each month will have a pictured bio, highlighting their accomplishments, placed on this page.

Dylan Matheny Union High School Dylan Matheny is a senior at Union High School and is a member of the varsity cross country team. Matheny has been a member of the cross country and track teams since the seventh grade. Also the drum major for the Renegade Regiment, Matheny returns for the 2015 fall competitive season. “The Renegade Regiment is my second home, my second family. I've been learning music at Union since the 6th grade and have been a part of the Renegade Regiment since my freshman year of high school,” said Matheny. Cross Country coach Tom Stockton said Matheny was a, “great leader for the team,” and his senior leadership will help the young cross country team this season. Being marked as a leader is something Matheny has accepted and taken on with an excellent understanding of what that means to his team. “A servant-leader is a person who puts his or her peers in front of their own personal needs and wants. Being a great leader is loving everyone and knowing your responsibilities and simply leading by example.” For his commitment to Union High School, his teammates and the Renegade Regiment, Dylan Matheny is the Mazzios Athlete of the Month.

Callie Taylor Glenpool High School Senior Callie Taylor is a varsity softball player at Glenpool High School for head coach Trent Patterson. Taylor was named Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2014. The centerfielder is known for her ability to make plays in the outfield. Last season Taylor finished with a .402 batting average and scored 45 runs. She also added 20 stolen bases. “Callie will be the spark at the top of our lineup as well as a defensive wizard,” said coach Patterson. Taylor had 62 chances in the outfield last year with zero errors. She made several highlight reel plays according to coach Patterson and has the speed to track down balls from her centerfield position. Taylor has the speed, power and defense to play at the next level. Look for her to have a great senior season as the Lady Warriors look to continue their hit streak into 2015. For her play on the field and her desire to help her team win, Callie Taylor is the Mazzios Athlete of the Month.

JENKS TROJANS Coach: ALLAN TRIMBLE Enrollment: 3,194

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Bixby Sept. 11 – at Union (Chapman Stadium) Sept. 18 – vs. Owasso Sept. 25 – at Putnam City Oct. 2 – vs. Norman Oct. 9 – at Westmoore Oct. 15 – vs. Edmond Santa Fe Oct. 23 – vs. Broken Arrow Oct. 30 – at Edmond Memorial Nov. 6 – vs. Yukon Quick Hits: The Trojans own a record of 120-15 over the past decade. That’s good for a win percentage of 88.9, the best in all of Oklahoma high school football. Currently no team playing in the 5A/6A classification in Oklahoma, has a winning streak against Jenks. Jenks has nine straight seasons of double-digit wins. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 11-2 2013 - 14-0 2012 – 12-2 2011 – 10-3 2010 – 13-1 OFFENSE Going for their fourth straight title in Class 6A, the Jenks Trojans, led by quarterback Cooper Nunley (5-10, 180, Sr.) may field their best team in as many years. Nunley, a VYPE Top 100 selectee, could become the winningest quarterback in Jenks history, which is not an easy task when you consider the quarterbacks that came before him. Former Jenks great Mark Ginther currently holds the record with 35 wins. Nunley and the Trojans need to win 10 games to tie and nine wins to pass Sawyer Kolmorgen. The offensive line will feature two seniors with experience and attitude. Sheldon Barnes (6-3, 330, Sr.) and Mason Minnix (6-2, 265, Sr.) are the keystones to one of the best

lines in the state. Minnix follows a long line of salty centers that play a smart, but physical style. One player the coaching staff is excited to have back is tight end Reese Leitao (6-3, 230, Jr.). Only a junior, Leitao brings size to the tight end position and his ability to go up and grab balls in the air. His basketball skills will translate to production on the football field. Running Dillon back Andrew Wyatt (5-10, 180, Sr.) played in several games last year, mainly in mop up duty. Now Wyatt is ready to prove he’s more than capable of being the No.1 back in the offense.

is Tyler Thomas (6-0, 305, Sr.). Thomas has been a warrior for the Trojans going both ways, but his dominance is most felt at defensive tackle. Thomas will help younger players on the line become stalwarts for coach Landon Isham on the D-line. Finding a rush end may be the priority in August. In week one the Trojans go on the road to face Class 6A-II champ Bixby Spartans, then face the Union Redskins at Stoner Chapman Stadium. Coach AllanTrimble has another great coaching staff in place for 2015. The 2015 staff consists of Carl Johnson, Keith Riggs, Dub Maddox, Landon Isham, Greg Calabrese, Josh Elmer, Zach Herren, Doug Greenwood, Darrel Beeler, Justin Glenn and Brady Robbins.

DEFENSE With five returning starters to the defense, many would think it could be a down year for the Trojans. However, when you consider that three, maybe four of those returning are DI football players, then you realize the defense will have another solid campaign in 2015. Led by linebackers Austin ® Quillen (5-11, 190, Sr.) and Carter AUTO • HOME • LIFE Nelson (6-2, 220, Sr.), running the ball against the Trojans will not be an easy task. Quillen has committed to Vanderbilt University and both players were named to the VYPE Top 100. Both players are physical athletes that swarm to the football. Nelson is an intelligent player and a natural leader. Not to be left out of the mix at corner is Dillon Stoner (61, 185, Sr.). Stoner, another VYPE Top 100 selectee, has committed to OSU. For two years Stoner has put Class 6A on notice; throwing to his side of the field is highly discouraged. Joining Stoner in the secondary is Morgan Thomas (5-11, 180, Sr.). Thomas came on strong last year and looks to continue making plays in the secondary. The big nasty up front

Quick Hits: The Redskins have won 86.7 percent of their games in the past 10 years, including five state championships. Union enters 2015 trying to keep Jenks from winning its fourth straight title. Union won four straight championships from 2008 to 2011. Union has made the semifinals in Class 6A 16 of the past 17 seasons. The Redskins’ only undefeated season in the modern era (6A Era) came in 2002. Union finished that season in style, hammering Broken Arrow 52-3 in the state championship game. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 11-2 2013 - 11-3 2012 – 10-3 2011 – 13-1 2010 – 13-1

OFFENSE At Union you don’t rebuild, you just reload. That’s a good thing for head coach Kirk Fridrich since his Redskins bring back just two offensive starters. One of those returners is running back Tyler Adkins (5-9, 195, Sr.) who was selected to the VYPE Top 100 prior to the season. Last season Adkins carried the ball 203 times for 1,397 yards and 21 total touchdowns. Overall Adkins averaged 107.5 yards per game and 6.9 yards per carry proving he can rip off big yards any time he touches the ball. Another returning offensive starter will be wide receiver Daeonte Calvert (6-0, 175, Sr.). As a junior Calvert caught 27 passes for 474 yards and four touchdowns. This year as he steps into the role of Union’s top receiver expect those numbers to go up since last year’s top receiver Robert

AUGUST 2015

Ayo Ologolo Thomas had nearly double the production Calvert did. Another key part of the Union offense this year will be the special teams play of kicker Jace Holt (6-0, 170, Sr.). Last year Holt was 11-of-12 on field goal attempts with a long of 40. Holt was also 71-of-74 on extra points last year. “This year will be a new challenge for our coaching staff, with many of the starters lost to graduation we will need to gain experience fast with new players,” Fridrich said. DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball the Redskins also only return two starters but again one of those two is a Top 100 player. That player is defensive back Ayo Ologolo (5-9, 165, Sr.) a player that can turn any situation into a big play. Last season Ologolo made 80 total tackles, had one interception and six pass breakups. Ologolo also blocked nine kicks last year, showcasing a skill that can turn a game in an instant.

Also on the defensive side of the ball will be Tre Brown (5-10, 170, Jr.). A defensive back that proved he could make big plays on the biggest stages last year Brown won’t back away from the spotlight. As a sophomore Brown made 45 tackles and picked off three passes, including a big interception in the Backyard Bowl. Brown also made seven tackles in the state title game last year. Finally possibly the biggest weapon for the Union defense will be Holt. As the team’s punter last year Holt averaged 33.2 yards per punt with a long of 50. Holt also put three punts inside the 20, helping Union win the field position battle nearly every time out. “Defensively we will need to get solid play from our secondary as we replace many players from our front seven with new faces and athletes hungry to leave their mark on the program,” Fridrich said.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Lexy Dobson – Union Softball

Lexy Dobson is an All-District outfielder and second baseman for coach Jerry Pease. Last season as a sophomore, Dobson had a monster year at the plate and in the field. Dobson finished with a .440 batting average, 40 RBIs and a .990 fielding percentage. She is a defensive anchor, and she can be counted on to make a big hit. She is looking to have an even bigger year in 2015. Union lost in the first round of the state tournament to eventual champion Mustang last season. This year, Dobson looks to help lead the Lady Redskins to a deep playoff run. Dobson enjoys playing softball because of the opportunities it gives her in life, such as playing in college and making friends that will last forever. After high school, Dobson plans on playing college softball and getting a degree in dentistry. For all of her hard work, and dedication to Union softball, Lexy Dobson is the Lewis Roofing Athlete of the Month.

Sapulpa dropped a 35-13 decision to Sand Springs in week six. That victory gave the Sandites an 11-9 edge over the Chieftans during the past 20 meetings. Sapulpa shutout Nathan Hale 55-0 for its only win in 2014. It was the first shutout in 28 games since turning the trick against the Rangers in week two of 2012. Detrick Johnson OFFENSE A physical ground game and relentless effort. That’s what Sapulpa head coach Jake Corbin said fans can expect from his offense this year. That ground game will last all day as well. As in VYPE Top 100 running back Dae Williams (6-1, 230, Sr.) who is already receiving scholarship offers from Army, Navy, New Mexico and SMU. Last season Williams rushed for 1,064 yards and 11 touchdowns on 222 carries and will be looking to do even more this season. Other key skill position players for Sapulpa this year include quarterback Trey Bilby (5-10, 180, Sr.) and wide receiver Detrick Johnson (6-1, 185, Sr.). Both players put up good numbers last season but will be expected to improve their numbers this year with another year of varsity football under their belts. No number of skill players can be successful without a solid offensive line though and Sapulpa has two big road graders back this year. Danny Glenn (6-0, 270, Sr.) and Jordan Hearon (6-3, 285, Sr.) make up that duo with both players providing a great deal of size and strength up front. Overall coach Corbin said that his team will be something that the community and fans can get behind. “We have the best fans in Oklahoma high school football and we will put a product on the field that the hard

working people of Sapulpa can be proud of. We’re bringing the blue back to Sapulpa,” Corbin said.

DEFENSE Running a multiple formation defense the Chieftains bring back eight defensive starters and should be strong at every level of the defense. On the defensive line Nick Boyne (6-0, 235, Sr.) will be a major run stopper in the middle. Tom Schadel (6-2, 200, Sr.) will also start on the defensive line providing the Chieftains with a good blend of strength and speed in the trenches. At linebacker look for Bay Goodpasture (5-10, 190, Sr.) to leave opponents looking for greener fields after coming across the middle against the Chieftains. On the back end of the defense Braden Ward (5-10, 180, Sr.) and Kemper Hearon (5-11, 185, Sr.) will both give opposing quarterbacks fits while giving the Chieftains a big dose of senior leadership. After holding just one opponent to 21 points or fewer last season the Sapulpa defense will need to rely heavily on their experience they gained last year to not only improve their stats but more importantly navigate a tough district schedule and have a shot to make a run at the playoffs.

Dae Williams

Coach: STEVE EDWARDS Enrollment: 657

Schedule: Sept. 4 – vs. Berryhill Sept. 11 – vs. Beggs Sept. 18 – at Oologah Photo by Michael Mayberry Sept. 25 – at Ada Oct. 2 – vs. Harrah Oct. 9 – at Bristow Oct. 15 – vs. Tecumseh Oct. 23 – OPEN Oct. 30 – vs. Tuttle Nov. 6 – at McLoud

Quick Hits: Glenpool will meet McLoud for the tenth consecutive season in week 10. The Warriors hold an 8-1 advantage during that time with the Redskins only win coming in 2012.

The Warriors have not won a playoff game since 2011. Prior to that season, Glenpool won at least one game in eight of the previous nine seasons. Glenpool has lost four straight in its series against Ada. The Warriors last beat the Cougars in 2003. The two teams meet in Ada week four. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 6-5, 2013 - 5-5 , 2012 - 3-7, 2011 – 7-5, 2010 – 9-3

OFFENSE A year ago the Glenpool Warriors got back to the Class 4A playoffs for the first time in three years. This year the Warriors will be bringing back a solid core group of players and head coach Steve Edwards believes his team has a chance to make an even deeper run. “I think we have a chance. Our district is tough but I think we have a shot. Our quarterback really hit his stride last year and we are hoping we can build on that,” Edwards said. “We have a great tradition at Glenpool and we want to keep that going. Everybody just needs to grab hold of the rope.” The quarterback that Edwards mentioned is Colton Kane (5-10, 180, Jr.), a dual-threat signal caller. Kane came on strong last year as a sophomore and has looked very strong this summer in camp and passing league according to Edwards. In the backfield look for Austin Lacroix (6-0, 210, Sr.) to handle most of the ball carrying duties. Colton Hughart (6-2, 180, Sr.) will also be working out of the backfield as the team’s H-back. Glenpool will also have strong offensive line play working in its favor this year. Offensive tackle Nick Heck (6-3, 270, Sr.) and offensive guard Bryce Remmington (5-10, 225, Sr.) will be counted on to be the leaders of that group and help Kane and company be successful.

GLENPOOL WARRIORS

DEFENSE On defense the Warriors will base out of a 4-3 look this year; with an extremely strong front seven. Andrew Gossett (5-11, 190, Sr.) will start at inside

linebacker this year for the Warriors with junior Grant Zickefoose also starting at linebacker. On the defensive line Jon Cain (5-11, 180, Sr.) will start at end and provide a strong pass rushing threat off the edge. Seniors Kyle Harders and Bailey Bennett will also both start on the defensive line this year and give an added measure of toughness and muscle up front. Edwards also added that the Warriors kicking game will be a huge strength and should allow them to set their defense up in good spots and allow them to be more aggressive.

Quick Hits: The Rams have long been associated with big offensive numbers. However, Owasso finished 2014 allowing only 14.5 points per game, second to Jenks in Class 6A-DI.

Owasso ended an eight game losing streak to Broken Arrow by defeating the Tigers 14-7 in week one of 2014.

Owasso has won 80 games in the past decade but last advanced to a state championship in 1974 when they defeated Bartlesville 19-6 in the semifinals. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 10-2 2013 - 5-6 2012 - 10-3 2011 – 9-4 2010 – 8-5

OFFENSE Owasso continued to show why they are a team to watch in Class 6A-I last year as they went 10-2 on the year and 6-1 in district play. More important than the win total is the fact that the Rams made it to the state semifinals before seeing their season come to an end with a 42-14 loss to eventual state champion Jenks. This season the Rams will lean on six returning starters to power their Auburn-style spread offense. On the outside, receivers Desmond Sampson (5-9, 160, Sr.) and Chance Johnson (6-1, 200, Sr.) will be two players capable of taking the ball to the house anytime they touch 26

Chance Johnson it. Last season, Johnson caught 38 passes and Sampson caught 36 which put both of them among the team’s leaders. Running back Daulton Esmeyer (5-11, 200, Sr.) also has big play ability and will be stepping into a bigger role this year after rushing for 500 yards last season. Making use of those skill players will be quarterback Troy Hudson (6-1, 190, Jr.). This fall will mark Hudson’s first season starting under center and guiding the Rams’ offense. Despite all the talent at the skill positions he most important member of the Owasso offense this year will be the offensive line. Brandon Scott (6-7, 315, Sr.) was selected to the VYPE Top 100 and will anchor things up front for the Rams this year. DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball the Rams return just four starters, a

fact that prompted head coach Bill Patterson to say his defensive unit will be strong up front with good team speed but will be very young in the secondary. Helping put together that strong front on the defensive line will be Caleb Colvin (6-3, 260, Sr.) at defensive end and Kavon Graham (6-4, 270, Sr.) at defensive tackle. Linebacker Austin Boyd (6-0, 195, Jr.) will also be a part of the Owasso front seven and a key playmaker for the Rams’ defense. In the inexperienced secondary that Patterson mentioned look for Athanie Leeviraphan (5-11, 170, Jr.) and Zack Mitchell (5-10, 175, Sr.) to make the majority of the plays. Leevirapham will be the team’s top corner this year while Mitchell will put his versatility to use and play a multitude of positions this fall. Overall Patterson said that while this year’s team could possibly have more talent than last season but their record may not show it due to a very challenging schedule. “Two key position groups were hurt by graduation, the offensive line and secondary. We could have a better team but a worse record because of our schedule,” Patterson said.

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Owasso Sept. 11 – at Coppell, Texas Sept. 18 – vs. Union Sept. 25 – at Yukon Oct. 2 – vs. Putnam City Oct. 8 – at Norman Oct. 15 – vs. Westmoore Oct. 23 – at Jenks Oct. 30 – vs. Edmond Santa Fe Nov. 6 – vs. Edmond Memorial

Quick Hits: Arch rival Union has been the Tigers’ playoff nemesis. Union has eliminated Broken Arrow from the playoffs seven times in the past sixteen seasons. Bentonville, AR drops from the schedule and Coppell, TX comes on board in week 2. The Cowboys finished 6-5 in 2014 and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by DeSoto.

The 2011 Tigers hold the record for most wins in a single season, finishing 12-2 and one point shy of a state championship. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 10-3 2012 – 8-4 2011 – 12-2 2010 – 9-3

OFFENSE Jenks and Union have dominated the east side of the state for as long as most high school students have been alive. If there is a school on this side of the state that is going to challenge that run, the common school brought up by the so called “experts” is Broken Arrow. Will the Tigers make a run at a gold ball this year? Who knows, but one thing that is certain is that the Tigers are loaded with talent. On the offensive side of the ball, VYPE Top 100 running back Jamall Shaw (5-11, 194, Sr.) will be a major weapon for the Tigers after rushing for 1,428 yards last season. Opening up holes for Shaw this year will be another Top 100 player in offensive tackle Rowdy Frederick (6-4, 330, Sr.). Frederick is a mountain of a man and has already received scholarship offers from Tulsa, Texas Tech and Houston among others. Other key players for the Tigers’ offense this year

will be Sammy Akem (6-4, 190, Sr.) and Brendon Franklin (6-2, 182, Sr.) both of whom will start at wide receiver. Distributing the ball to all of the Tigers’ skill players will be quarterback Cade Yeager (6-1, 187, Jr.).

of the field and frustrate opposing receivers all year long. “We are going to be an experienced group with some great leaders on both sides of the ball this year. I think we have a group that can have success and be competitive. We just need to stay healthy and continue to improve throughout the year,” head coach David Alexander said.

DEFENSE The Broken Arrow offense will be very experienced but the defense will be even more so with eight returning starters from a year ago. That experience should pay off well in defensive coordinator Bobby Klink’s aggressive 4-2-5 scheme. The experience should also come in handy as Broken Arrow battles teams like Union, Jenks and Owasso for east side bragging rights. Gage Kaiser (6-2, 240, Sr.) is one key figure to look for on the Tigers’ defense, starting at defensive end. In his junior season Kaiser made a whopping 16 sacks and could easily top that mark this year. Israel Tristan (5-11, 208, Sr.) is another player who will record a massive amount of tackles this year from his spot at linebacker. Last season Tristan made 101 tackles and is hungry to prove that he is one of the top defensive players in Class 6A. In the secondary, Broken Arrow will turn to free safety Devon Johnson (510, 187, Sr.) and strong safety Jordan Davis (5-10, 207, Sr.) to make a great deal of plays both defending the pass and stopping the run. Cornerback Brady Jones (5-8, 168, Sr.) is also an experienced player on the back end of the Tigers’ defense and will be expected to lock down one side

THE “DRIVEN” ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Sammy Akem - Broken Arrow High School Akem is a name that everybody recognizes in Broken Arrow. A couple years ago it was Gyasi Akem making plays all over the gridiron for the Tigers. Now Gyasi is a budding star at Oklahoma State University but his younger brother Sammy is stepping out of his brother’s shadow and building a legacy of his own. On the football field last year Sammy helped the Tigers go 7-4 while playing wide receiver and catching 25 passes for 248 yards. Akem’s year wasn’t done though,

in the spring he finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles at the Class 6A state meet.

This year Akem is planning on improving his numbers on the football field and help the Tigers challenge for a gold ball while on the track he goes for individual gold as a star hurdler for the black and gold. For his efforts on the football field and on the track Sammy Akem is the Western Sun Driven Athlete of the Month.

Broken Arrow returns solid leadership, big senior class in 2015 The 2014 season did not end the way coach Randall King and the Lady Tigers had hoped it would. The Lady Tigers came up one run short of claiming the Class 6A state title. After scoring 11 runs in the first round, and 12 runs in the sec-

ANNA FARROW

ond round, the Lady Tigers scored only three runs in the final against Mustang.

Coming into the 2015 season, King and his squad are ready for redemption. King has a solid group of seniors returning to lead this team. Leadership will be incredibly important for this team, considering they have a good group of players who don’t have much varsity experience. “Leadership will be very important for us,” King said. “Seniors Ashley Chesser, Marcella McKinney, Kaitlynn Monckton and Kinzy Mathis are returning, and will need to show leadership both on and off the field. I think they are a good core group that has been through a lot of big games.”

The four players King mentioned were key pieces to the Lady Tigers’ run last season. Chesser, who played first base last year but will switch to catcher this season, finished with 13 doubles, 33 RBIs and a .416 batting average. McKinney will provide power in the middle of the lineup. McKinney was the designated player last season, but she will be asked to play both second

base and outfield this season. McKinney finished with 12 homeruns, 55 RBIs and a .364 batting average in 2014. Monckton is a solid outfielder, and is the leadoff hitter for coach King. She hit .384 last season, and expects to boost those numbers this season. Mathis is moving from second base over to shortstop. She is a top-notch fielder for coach King.

Pitching has been a focal point of the Lady Tigers’ offseason training. Coach King does not have a ton of experience returning to the circle. Alyssa Myers will be King’s top pitching option this season. She finished with a 6-1 record and a 3.5 ERA last year. Senior Kaylee Brown played for the junior varsity squad last year, but she will be expected to come in and make an impact when she is called upon. With Chesser moving to catcher, senior Anna Farrow, who also played junior varsity last year, will step in at first base. The senior class won’t be the only impactful group this season. Sophomores Mary Collins and McKenzie Carney will both play big roles. Collins, who is a pitcher and outfielder, will be important both at the plate and in the pitching circle. Carney will be expected to anchor the infield at third base. Freshman Grace Jarvis has a strong chance to help the Lady Tigers on offense. She has a powerful bat, and she will serve as the designated player. Jarvis will be expected to make more than one big hit. Keep an eye out for Broken Arrow as they make a run at redemption.

Rachel Kik - Broken Arrow High School Broken Arrow senior Rachel Kik is a member of the Tigers’ cheer squad and this fall will be focusing on helping her team contend for their third state championship in a row. Kik has been cheering since the third grade and is very dedicated to her team but is also very dedicated to her work in the classroom. Kik carries a 4.3 grade point average and took AP Language and Composition as a junior and this year plans to take AP Statistics, AP Economics and AP Literature. Kik says her favorite class though is Marketing Education because it introduced her to the business world and really helped her choose what type of career she wants to pursue.

After high school Kik said her dream would be to attend the University of Oklahoma but said no matter what she plans on majoring in Business Management and minoring in Marketing. For her dedication to being a standout student-athlete Rachel Kik is the Broken Arrow Academic Athlete of the Month.

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Sallisaw Sept. 11 – vs. Collinsville Sept. 18 – vs.Mayberry Grove Photo by Michael Sept. 25 – at McLain Oct. 2 – vs. Cleveland Oct. 9 – at Vinita Oct. 15 – at Oologah Oct. 23 – vs. Cascia Hall Oct. 30 – at Miami Nov. 6 – vs. Wagoner

Quick Hits: Catoosa has won nine in a row against McLain. The Titans last defeated the Indians in 1999.

The Indians followed up a 2013 playoff win against Cascia Hall by handing the Commandos a 28-21 week nine defeat in 2014. Catoosa has beaten Miami five consecutive times. The last Wardogs win in the series came back in 1997. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 5-6, 2013 - 8-4, 2012 - 5-6 2011 – 12-1, 2010 – 10-3

Trey Johnson OFFENSE In 2014 the Indians were able to get into the Class 4A playoffs but fell to Metro Christian in the first round by a score of 38-7. This year with eight returning offensive starters the Indians believe they have what it takes to make a deep playoff run. “We are excited about the 2015 season. The kids have worked hard all year and have had a great offseason,” Meier said. Catoosa’s offense will be built around a strong run game this season. Leading that rushing attack will be running back Drake Hinkle (5-8, 175, Sr.) and fullback Branden Ferguson (6-2, 225, Sr.). Opening up holes for the two backs will be lineman Loggan Wofford (5-11, 240, Sr.). When the Indians do decide to throw the ball it will be Trey Johnson (5-11, 160, Jr.) doing the passing. One of Johnson’s top targets this year will be tight end Jason Roth (6-2, 220, Sr.). With a good amount of size on his side Roth will also be instrumental in the run blocking scheme.

Matt Dillon DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Meier said that fans can expect the Indians to showcase a strong front seven while playing a fundamentally sound bend but don’t break style of defense. On the defensive line Daniel Velazquez (6-0, 260, Sr.) will be a key playmaker for the Indians. Working alongside Velazquez on the defensive line will be Tyler Gifford (6-2, 240, Jr.). In the middle of Catoosa’s 4-3 defense fans will be able to find both Wofford and Ferguson at linebacker. Two players who aren’t afraid to initiate the contact, expect both Wofford and Ferguson to pile up the tackles this season. Last but not least, Matt Dillon (6-0, 175, Jr.), will be the Indians’ top playmaker in the secondary, starting at strong safety. Competing in a district that will house strong teams such as Wagoner and Oologah, the two teams who played in the 4A state championship game last year, the Catoosa defense will need to play at a high level all year if they hope to get back to the playoffs and have a shot at a title.

OFFENSE Everyone knew the Metro Christian Patriots would be a solid football team last year capable of making a deep playoff run. The Patriots lived up to those expectations and made it all the way to the Class 4A semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Wagoner by a score of 21-14. This year the Patriots hope to go even further and become the team raising the gold ball in December. Quarterback Abe Anderson (6-3, 220, Sr.) will be the straw that stirs the drink in the Patriots offense this year. Anderson, who was selected to the VYPE Top 100, threw for 3,660 yards and 33 touchdowns last year and hopes to be even better this year. Two of Anderson’s top targets this year will be receivers Jake Koenig (6-0, 195, Sr.) and Cavan Gary (510, 160, Sr.). A year ago Koenig caught 62 passes for 1,071 yards and 13 touchdowns and Gary snagged 67 passes for 846 yards and nine touchdowns. Running back Josh Wolfe (6-3, 210, Sr.) and offensive lineman Jack Roe (6-3, 215, Jr.) will also play key roles in the Metro Christian offense this year.

DEFENSE The Patriots will use many of their key offensive players to make big plays on the defensive side of the ball as well. Anderson and Wolfe will both see time at linebacker this season while Koenig and Gary both will work in the secondary. Expect Roe to also play some defense this year for the Patriots lining up on the defensive line. Other key players for the Metro Christian defense this year will be defensive backs Dalton Smallwood (5-7, 140, Jr.) and Donavan Nicholson (5-8, 165, Jr.). A year ago both Smallwood and Nicholson made over 40 tackles last season with Smallwood recording three interceptions and Nicholson picking off two passes of his own.

METRO CHRISTIAN PATRIOTS

Schedule: Sept. 4 – vs. Midwest City Sept. 11 – at Central Sept. 18 – vs. East Central Sept. 25 – at Ponca City Oct. 2 – vs. Sapulpa Oct. 8 – at Claremore Oct. 15 – vs. Bartlesville Oct. 23 – at Bixby Oct. 30 – vs. Sand Springs Nov. 6 – at Muskogee

Quick Hits: The Hornets narrowly edged out Midwest City as the top defense in Class 6A-II, holding opponents to 13.0 points per game.

Booker T. welcomes Midwest City to S. E. Williams stadium in week one. The Bombers and Hornets have had many playoff tussles through the years. None more prominent than a 13-8 win in the 1969 state championship game. The victory gave the Hornets their third straight state championship.

Booker T. Washington shut out four consecutive opponents in 2014. The rest of the 15 teams in Class 6A-II combined for only nine shutouts. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 10-2 2013 - 7-4 2012 – 5-6 2011 – 4-6 2010 – 13-1 2009 – 8-2

OFFENSE In the first year of the 6A split, the Booker T. Washington Hornets quickly put themselves on the short list of powerhouse teams in the 6A-II division. Finishing the year with a 10-2 record, the Hornets advanced all the way to the state semifinals before losing

Justice Hill

to eventual runner-up Lawton by a score of 42-27. That playoff loss meant that the only teams to beat the Hornets in 2014 were the state champion and the state runner-up. This season Booker T. plans to be right back in title contention with six offensive starters returning. Running back Justice Hill (5-10, 190, Sr.) is already committed to play at Oklahoma State and will be the offensive leader for the Hornets. Selected to the VYPE Top 100, Hill ran for 1,426 yards and 24 touchdowns last year on 220 carries. Fellow Top 100 selection Kyle Mayberry (5-10, 170, Sr.) will provide balance to the Hornets’ offense starting at wide receiver. Last season Mayberry, who is primarily a cornerback, caught 13 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns. The Hornets other top receiver this year figures to be Tariq Bitson (6-3, 190, Sr.), who caught 26 passes for 470 yards and five touchdowns last year. On the offensive line big boys Braden Patten (6-1, 270, Jr.) and Marcus Brent (6-3, 230, Sr.) provide a good amount of beef up front. “We are going to be a very explosive offense with a zone read concept and a very explosive passing game,” head coach Marvin Dantzler said of his offensive unit. DEFENSE On defense everything starts with Mayberry for the Hornets. Last year the star defensive back made sure he turned his side of the field into a no-fly zone with 16 pass breakups. Don’t look for him to get thrown at often this year either with Mayberry already getting scholarship offers from Illinois, Nevada and Washington State, but committed to Kansas in early July. At linebacker the Hornets will turn to Kendall Sweet (6-1, 200, Jr.) and Jason Harris (5-9, 195, So.) to make plays in the middle of the defense. As a sophomore Sweet had 67 tackles and two interceptions, while Harris made 42 tackles and recorded two sacks as a freshman in 2014.

On the front line of the defense the Hornets will have a good deal of muscle on their side. Jonathan Harris (5-11, 270, Sr.) and Reggie Mayes (6-2, 240, Sr.) will be the leaders of the Hornets’ defensive line. As juniors Harris piled up 54 tackles and two sacks, while Mayes forced three fumbles and wreaked havoc all season long. With a challenging schedule staring them in the face expect the Hornets to play an aggressive, attacking style of defense using their blend of size and speed to frustrate opposing offenses.

The Spartans enter the 2015 campaign with a 12-game winning streak. That is the longest streak since 2005 when Bixby won 12 in a row sandwiched by narrow losses to Jenks in the season opener and East Central in the Class 5A finals. Nic Roller 2011 – 3-7 2010 – 7-4

OFFENSE The Bixby Spartans finished the 2014 season at the summit of the mountain that is Class 6A-II. After losing the opener to juggernaut Jenks, the Spartans reeled off 12 wins a row, with the final win coming in the state championship. The Spartans’ top two offensive threats, which led Bixby to 43 points per game in 2014, return this season to try to repeat as champions. Running back Nic Roller (6-0, 241, Sr.) and quarterback Tanner Griffin (6-1, 191, Jr.), who are both VYPE Top 100 selections, are the driving forces for the Spartan offense. Roller rushed for more than 2,000 yards last season, making him one of the best running backs in the state in 2015. Griffin threw for more than 3,000 yards in 2014, but with only five returning offensive starters, Griffin’s numbers will need to be elevated. “We have a lot of holes to fill off of the 2014 championship team, but we have a great nucleus of returning players,” Bixby coach Loren Montgomery said. “We look forward to many new players stepping into their new roles.” Griffin’s top receiving threat is Cade Cabbiness (6-3, 190, Sr.), who finished with 600 receiving yards last season. Cabbiness can threaten defenses in the short and deep passing games. If the Spartans want to repeat, his play will have to be consistent throughout the season. Jared Kerr (6-1, 195, Sr.) will start at tight end. Kerr is a good blocker, and has solid hands. Oliver Pate (6-0, 265, Sr.) will aim to keep Griffin’s jersey clean this season. Pass protection will be key for the success of the Spartans’ passing game. DEFENSE The Spartans return seven starters to the defensive side of the ball, headlined by a strong senior class. Woodward (6-0, 195, Sr.) will captain and lead that group. He amassed 151 tackles last year, which put him in the top 20 in the state, regardless of class.Woodward is the driving force for the defense, and is a vocal leader. On the defensive line, Jed Stinson (5-11, 230, Sr.) and Brendon Evers (6-2, 287, Jr.) return. These guys plug up running lanes, and relentlessly rush the passer. They force offensive lineman to double team, which frees up Woodward. The front seven will be the strength of this defense. Stinson and Evers finished with 46 and 33 tackles last year, respectively. The secondary sees two of its most experienced players return. Jake Spriggs (6-0, 201, Sr.) and Connor Walker (5-10, 188, Sr.) will try to create turnovers and get the ball back to their explosive offense. Defensive coordinator Rodney Flowers makes the calls and gets his guys in the right spot. Brian Douglas coaches the linebackers, Travis Hicks coaches the defensive backs and Brad Clark coaches the defensive lineman.

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Edison Sept. 11 – at McGuinness Sept. 18 – vs. Coweta Sept. 24 – vs. Memorial Oct. 2 – at McAlester Oct. 9 – vs. Shawnee Oct. 15 – at Nathan Hale Oct. 23 – vs. Noble Oct. 30 – at Skiatook Nov. 6 – vs. Durant

We’re your Shield. We’re your Shelter. 2013 - 6-5 2012 - 9-3 2011 – 8-3 2010 – 5-6

OFFENSE Head coach JJ Tappana has a large portion of the team returning this season, but he’s still in need of a signal caller.

Quick Hits: The Comets missed the playoffs a year ago for the first time since 1997. Bishop Kelley’s 70 wins the past ten years is third most of any Class 5A team on the east side of the state. East Central holds the top spot with McAlester in second. Bishop Kelley defeated Durant 35-14 in week 10. It was the seventh straight win for the Comets in the series. The Lions last win came in 1993. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 5-5

Hayden Ashley

“We have a team with a good mix that likes to run the football with a triple option from multiple looks with big backs. We need to find a quarterback and with 95% of our starters returning we should have a strong team this season. Our district had three teams that at one time were ranked No.1 in Class 5A and five teams that were at one time ranked in the top 10. Most of those teams return a lot of starters. Should be a very strong district,” said coach Tappana. Jack Woolslayer (6-1, 210, Sr.) and Jake Percy (6-1, 220, Sr.) return to run the football for the Comets. They represent the “big backs” coach Tappana mentioned. The offensive line is anchored by senior Nick Luschen (6-1, 260). Luschen will lead a talented group of guys in the trenches. The passing game will feature two outstanding receivers in Hayden Ashley (5-11, 170, Sr.) and Deshawn Diaz (5-11, 170, Sr.). Both players are capable of making game breaking plays. Michael Solomon is another big target in the offensive scheme. DEFENSE The Comet defense will base out of the 3-4 and play with an aggressive, attaching mindset. Zach Sheehan (6-2, 240, Sr.) will play a major

DUSTIN KINARD Enrollment: 1,639

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Nathan Hale Sept. 11 – at Enid Sept. 18 – vs. Guthrie Sept. 25 – at Bartlesville Oct. 2 – vs. Claremore Oct. 9 – at Sapulpa Oct. 15 – vs. Ponca City Oct. 23 – vs. Muskogee Oct. 30 – at Booker T. Washington Nov. 6 – vs. Bixby

Lane Lettich role in the 3-4 scheme. His push up front will allow the linebackers to see the play and react much quicker. Matt Smith (6-0, 200, Jr.) is one of those linebackers looking to benefit from Sheehan’s play up front. Phillip Scott (5-11, 200, Sr.) is the other. Both linebackers play an aggressive downhill style and swarm to the football. The secondary will feature playmakers Hayden Ashley and free safety Joe Nemic (5-10, 180, Jr.). Nemic will roam the secondary looking to force opposing

quarterbacks to make mistakes. Sheehan will bounce to the offensive side of the ball and play tight end, while Nemic will join Diaz and Ashley at wide receiver. The coaching staff consists of Eric Roepke, Steven Trammell, Shawn Lawhorn, Brandon Birks, Justin Robinson, Matt Andrews, Trevor Parks and Lane Frailey.

SAND SPRINGS SANDITES Coach:

Quick Hits: The Sandites have posted three consecutive winning seasons. That streak is currently second best to Lawton in Class 6A-II. Sand Springs defeated Midwest City 29-28 in the first round of the playoffs. That marks the first win in the post season since a 42-14 second round triumph over rival Sapulpa.

Sand Springs recorded its first shutout in 83 games when it blanked Claremore 17-0. The Sandites last blanked Tahlequah in week five of 2006. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 8-4 2013 - 6-4 2012 – 8-3 2011 – 3-7

2010 – 1-9

OFFENSE Sand Springs continued to be a team at the top of the standings last year going 7-3 in the regular season then upsetting west side favorite Midwest City in the first round of the playoffs before losing to eventual 6A-II state champ Bixby in the semifinals by a score of 41-14. This year the Sandites, a team that traditionally bases out of a spread formation, bring back five offensive starters and will operate out of multiple sets and rely heavy on their run game according to coach Dustin Kinard. Running back Lane Lettich (510, 190, Sr.) will spearhead that rushing attack for the Sandites this season. Clearing a path for Lettich this season will be an offensive line led by Andrew Biggs (6-1, 240, Sr.). On the outside look for receivers Trace Fleischman (6-0, 190, Sr.), Kasey Bales (6-1, 175, Jr.) and Ty Fain (5-10, 175, Sr.) to all be major targets in the passing game setup by the Sandites run game. All three receivers have big play ability and are threats to take the ball to the house anytime they get their hands on the pigskin. With three of their first four

games this year coming on the road this season and the other coming against Class 5A perennial power Guthrie, the Sandites offense will need to be ready to roll from the opening kick of the season.

DEFENSE While the offense may be strong for the Sandites this season the team’s true strength will be their defense. Kinard returns nine starters to his 3-4 base defense and will rely heavily on his defense to not only put his offense in good positions to score but also score themselves at times. The backbone of the Sandites’ defense will be their standout linebacker corps. Jacob Taber (5-10, 200, Sr.) will be the head of that group. Meanwhile Cole Dixon (6-1, 200, Sr.) and Delvin Jordan (6-0, 210, Jr.) will give the Sandites two very strong playmakers alongside Taber. On the defensive line Danny Ropp (6-0, 260, Jr.) will be the player the Sandites turn to in order to not only stop the run but also knife into the backfield to bring down the opposing quarterback. Finally, Parker Taylor (6-0, 175, Sr.) provides big play ability and a large dose of senior leadership in the defensive backfield. Last season the Sandites defense allowed an average of 19.5 points per game and held opponents to 14 points or less six different times. With a veteran group back this season look for those numbers to drop even lower, something that already has opposing offensive coordinators up late at night..

MEMORIAL CHARGERS Coach: RYAN REED Enrollment: 1070

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Central Sept. 11 – at Edison Sept. 18 – vs. Noah Sept. 24 – at Bishop Kelley Oct. 2 – vs. Durant Oct. 9 – at Noble Oct. 15 – vs. Skiatook Oct. 23 – vs. Shawnee Oct. 29 – vs. Nathan Hale Nov. 6 – at McAlester

Quick Hits: The Chargers defeated Bishop

Juwon Johnson Kelley for the first time in nine seasons, earning a 44-35 win at LaFortune in week five.

Memorial has won nine of its last ten games against Tulsa Public Schools teams. The Chargers last loss was to Edison in week two of 2013. The Chargers nineteen wins the past three seasons is the most combined for that time span since winning twenty games from 1988-1990. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 6-4 2012 – 6-4 2011 – 3-7 2010 – 7-4

OFFENSE Head coach Ryan Reed is looking for a balanced attack in the spread offense that allows for a fast tempo of running and throwing to keep opposing defenses on their heels. Quarterback Trevor Boone (6-1, 190, Sr.) will kick-start the offense with his athleticism and ability to make plays. Boone has several weapons in the arsenal. Tailback Trey Knight (5-10, 170, Sr.) is the spark in the running game coach Reed needs to keep opposing defenses honest. Teams will respect his game breaking ability and tough running. Jeff Bowman (6-0, 160, Sr.) will start at wide receiver giving Boone another target downfield. Bowman is quick and runs a crisp route. Terry Robinson (5-10, 225, Jr.) is a big halfback that runs with power and has the hands to be effective in the screen game. Isiah Thomas (6-6, 215, Jr.) anchors an offensive line that will have some new faces in key positions. Thomas needs to become a leader on that unit and help younger players mature into dependable, consistent players. “Our theme for this season is,

Trevor Boone “I Got Your Back.” We have had back-to-back winning seasons and our commitment to each other and to our school is going to help us take the next step,” said coach Reed.

DEFENSE With eight returning starters on defense the Chargers have the nucleus of an experienced and talented unit. James Lewis (6-0, 180, Sr.) will start at outside linebacker where his speed and ability to close on the ball carrier makes him one of the best in the class. Lewis will lead a talented group of linebackers that come into the 2015 season hungry for respect. Jalen Alexander (6-1, 160, Sr.) is the “Charger” linebacker, while Dah’Quari Royal (5-11, 170, Sr.) is the “Stinger” linebacker. This trio plays with passion and brings the pain to the tackle. Juwon Johnson (6-0, 175, Sr.) shores up a corner position and locks down one side of the field. Senior defensive tackle Anthony Boyd (6-1, 225) is a force inside. Boyd will pressure the opposing offense and force teams to make mistakes. “We are an extremely aggressive defense that brings pressure from multiple points on the field,” said coach Reed. The pressure is a big reason the Chargers are going to attack in the 3-3 stack set. That formation will allow the coaching staff to adjust, blitz and stunt on any given play. Coach Reed has compiled an experienced coaching staff consisting of Travis Stallings, Lee Kizzar, Joe Ballard, Brian Worrell, Dewayne Whittakre, Darnell Whittakre and Garry Deason.

NATHAN HALE RANGERS Coach: Scott Chronister Enrollment: 1179

Schedule: Sept. 4 – vs. Sand Springs Sept. 11 – at Sapulpa Sept. 17 – at Edison Sept. 25 – at Skiatook Oct. 2 – vs. Noble Oct. 9 – at Durant Oct. 16 – vs. Bishop Kelley Oct. 23 – at McAlester Oct. 30 – at Memorial Nov. 6 – vs. Shawnee

Quick Hits: The Rangers winless streak enters the season at 25. They last tasted victory in week five of 2012, 26-20 over Skiatook. Hale was shutout five times in a season for the first time since 2008. The Rangers 20-point total against Durant was the best of 2014.

Hale has surrendered 50 or more points in 15 of its last 21 games. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 0-10 2013 - 0-10 2012 - 2-8 2011 – 0-9 2010 – 3-7

OFFENSE After averaging just 6.2 points per game last season the Nathan Hale Rangers will be looking to improve production this year. The Rangers were also shutout five different times last season, another fact that head coach Scott Chronister and assistant coaches Shane Keim and Simone Fields definitely hope to improve this year. This year the Rangers will try to stay balanced on offense according to Chronister with the game plan centering around the rushing attack and then complimenting that with a accurate passing game. Leading the ground attack for the Rangers this year will be Eugene Eckels (6-0, 175, Sr.) and Casey Washington (5-9, 185, So.). The two backs are expected to split carries this year in order to keep both of them fresh throughout the grueling season. Wide receivers Israel Mansker (6-1, 175, Jr.) and Shaun Green (6-1, 190, Jr.) will be the Rangers’ two top targets this year. On the offensive line Chronister will turn to Ryan Kelley (6-2, 260, Sr.) to lead the group of big boys up front. Kelley is a player with a nasty streak a mile long who enjoys his job of opening up holes for Hale’s backs to run through. DEFENSE The Hale defense returns just two starters but Chronister expects his defense to be a sound and funda-

Overall Chronister acknowledged that his team will be very young but is confident those young players can get the job done. “We will be young this year, some players are going to have to grow up quickly. The upperclassmen that we do have will need to take charge and lead by example on and off the field so that we can get to where we want to be as a team. If that happens, then everything else will fall into place,” Chronister said. That young roster will be tested early and often this year with the Rangers taking on Sand Springs and Skiatook, two teams that made either the semifinals of finals of their respective classes last year, within the first four weeks of the season.

Stephen Upton mental unit that attacks opposing offenses out of their 3-4 front. On the defensive line Torrence Hatton (6-4, 220, Sr.) and Jhamil Clardy (6-0, 215, Sr.) will give the Rangers strength up front but also two players that are athletic enough to slice through opposing offensive lines and wreak havoc in the backfield. Emile Douglas (5-9, 175, So.) is built more like your typical defensive back but is tougher than a $2 steak allowing Chronister to slide him up to linebacker. In the defensive secondary Mansker and Eckels both will use their speed and playmaking ability to give opposing quarterbacks headaches.

SKIATOOK BULLDOGS Coach: VANCE MILLER Enrollment: 734

Last 5 Years: 2014 - 12-2 2013 - 4-7 2012 – 0-10 2011 – 4-5 2010 – 4-7

OFFENSE A year ago the Skiatook Bulldogs still had their doubters that said the Bulldogs didn’t have the tradition. They said they didn’t have what it took to compete for a gold ball. Those doubters were wrong. Last year the Bulldogs made it all the way to the Class 5A finals before losing to Lawton MacArthur by a score of 39-12. This season the Bulldogs are looking to make that last and final step and become 5A state champions under

the leadership of head coach Vance Miller, offensive coordinator Bobby Cooper, defensive coordinator Brian Miller and assistant coaches Jim Cherry, Jeremiah Johnson, Joe Faircloth and Luke Brummett. The driving force behind Skiatook’s this year will be offensive guards Grant Appelberg (6-2, 280, Sr.) and Bradley Magalassi (5-9, 205, Sr.). Stephen Upton (5-11, 175, Sr.) also had figured to play into the Skiatook offense this year using his versatility and athleticism to play a variety of positions. Last season Upton ran for 395 yards on 395 carries and caught 50 passes for 866 yards and 16 touchdowns. Unfortunately Upton tore his ACL in early June leaving him out for the season. Looking to step up in a big way in Upton’s absence will be Beau Wooden (6-4, 210, Sr.). A year ago Wooden caught five passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 166 yards on 13 carries from his spot at flanker. DEFENSE On defense the Bulldogs will turn to Wooden to once again step up and be a team leader. Although he is slightly smaller than the average defensive lineman Wooden will start at defensive end for the Bulldogs this season. Last season Wooden used his athleticism to his advantage recording 123 total tackles. At linebacker the Bulldogs will count on Bryce Shook (5-11, 175, Sr.) to make plays from sideline to sideline in the heart of their 3-4 defense. As a junior Shook made 104 tackles and

will be counted on to have just as productive of a season this year. Possibly the player with the biggest load to bear on the defensive side of the ball this year will be defensive back Hunter Gnose (6-1, 175, Sr.). Upton was slated to start at cornerback before his injury making himself and Gnose one of the most feared secondary tandems in 5A. Now Gnose, who made 136 tackles last season, will be expected to take an even bigger role in the defensive backfield. Despite already being hit with a major injury expect the Bulldogs to play the same aggressive style of defense that only allowed their opponents to score an average of 16.7 points per game a year ago.

COLLINSVILLE CARDINALS Coach: KEVIN JONES Enrollment: 718

Schedule: Sept. 3 – at Oologah Sept. 11 – at Catoosa Sept. 18 – vs. Skiatook Sept. 25 – vs. Coweta Oct. 2 – at Tahlequah Oct. 9 – vs. Grove Oct. 16 – at Edison Oct. 23 – Open Oct. 30 – vs. Pryor Nov. 6 – at East Central

Quick Hits: The Cardinals faced three teams that eventually wound up in the state finals. Collinsville defeated Class 4A runner up Oologah 36-27 in the season opener. Lost to Class 5A runner up Skiatook in week three and were bounced out of the playoffs by 5A champ Lawton Mac in the quarterfinals. The Cardinals finished 7-13 in their first two seasons in Class 5A, they’ve taken flight since then with a threeyear run of 26-9.

Collinsville has won four straight in their series with Grove, last suffering defeat to the Ridgerunners in 2008. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 8-3 2013 - 10-3 2012 - 8-3 2011 – 4-6 2010 – 3-7

OFFENSE A balanced attack on offense is the goal for the 2015 season. You can expect to see multiple sets from Cardinals as head coach Kevin Jones looks to turn a group of juniors into district champions. “We are very excited about the group we have coming back in 2015. It’s

COWETA TIGERS Coach: JAY WILKINSON Enrollment: 913

Schedule: Sept. 4 – vs. Wagoner Sept. 11 – at McAlester Sept. 18 – at Bishop Kelley Sept. 25 – at Collinsville Oct. 2 – vs. East Central Oct. 9 – at Maize South Ks. Oct. 15 – vs. Pryor Oct. 23 – at Grove Oct. 30 – vs. Edison Nov. 6 – vs. Tahlequah

Jake Northern a great group of young men who love to compete, on the field and off. We will try to build upon back-toback district championships in an extremely tough and competitive district,” said coach Jones. Quarterback Seth Boomer (6-2, 185, Jr.) has several weapons at his disposal this season. Blake Burd (5-10, 195, Jr.) will start at running back giving the Cardinals a stable running game. Burd can gain those tough yards and Boomer is always a threat to tuck the ball and run. Wide receiver Brett Erickson (5-7, 155, Jr.) could be the go-to target for Boomer in the passing game. Erickson is quick and runs crisp routes. Up front the Cardinals will look to Joey Krupinski (6-1, 250, Jr.) and Nathan Schaffner (6-6, 275, Jr.) to be the unwavering brick walls coach Jones needs on the line. Young linemen need to mature and be willing to buy in to what coach Jones is selling. DEFENSE VYPE Top 100 linebacker and DI prospect Levi Draper (6-2, 225, Jr.) has several offers to play football in college, but before he packs his bags for the frat house he has unfinished business to handle in Collinsville. Joining Draper at linebacker is Josh Arnold (5-9, 190, Sr.) and outside linebacker Marc Tillman (5-11, 180, Sr.). The trio may be the best in the class. All plays a physical style of football that wears an offense down and they don’t gas late in games. “We have a very fast and aggressive unit on defense,” said Jones. That aggressiveness doesn’t stop with the linebackers. Defensive end Roc Robbins (6-0, 220, Sr.) loves to get after the quarterback from the edge. Strong safety Chandler Cole (6-2, 195, Jr.) is a heavy hitter, punishing anyone brave enough to come through his zone.

Back-to-back district titles has the Cardinal nation hungry for more. This group would love nothing more than to bring a gold ball back to Collinsville. Their third district title is well within reach, the question is do they have what it takes to go all the way?

Quick Hits: The Tigers were one of the most tough luck teams in the state in 2014. Coweta lost its first four games of 2014 by a combined 18 points. One of those losses was to archrival and eventual Class 4A champ Wagoner. Coweta and Pryor have met in each of the last five seasons. Coweta took the upper hand in the recent series earning a 28-7 victory last year at Pryor. The Orange and Black Tigers now have a 3-2 lead over the Blue and Gold Tigers since 2010.

The Tigers have qualified for the playoffs nine out of the last eleven years. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 5-6 2013 - 4-6 2012 - 6-5 2011 – 6-5 2010 – 9-3

OFFENSE A year ago the Coweta Tigers put up points in bunches, 36.3 per game to be exact, in head coach Jay Wilkinson’s first year at the school. Don’t expect anything different in Wilkinson’s second year, well except maybe more points. The leader of the pack this year for Coweta will be quarterback and VYPE Top 100 selection Jake Northern (5-11, 200, Sr.). Last year Northern burst onto the scene completing 238 passes on 400 attempts for 3,473 yards and 33 touchdowns. Northern also ran for 614 yards and six touchdowns on 174 carries last year. Running back Cole Shannon (5-9, 170, Sr.) and wide receiver Fletcher Edwards (5-9, 165, Sr.) will be two of Northern’s top targets this year. As a junior Shannon caught 21 passes for 313 yards and six touchdowns and also ran for 366 yards and seven touchdowns on 96 carries. Edwards meanwhile caught a respectable 45 passes for 615 yards and seven touchdowns. Offensive tackle Brazden White (6-3, 255, Sr.) and offensive guard Griffin Qualls (6-0, 290, Sr.) will be given the task of leading the group responsible for protecting Northern. Billy Rucker will also be a returning starter on the offensive line for the Tigers making that area a big strength for Wilkinson’s team. Overall Wilkinson said that his team won’t have to wait long to find out where they sit in the Class 5A landscape. “We get to find out early how good we are. Wagoner, McAlester, Bishop Kelley and Collinsville are the first four games of the season,” Wilkinson said. “Having an established quarterback will help. We must find a way to finish though. We were ahead in 10 out of 11 games last season.”

DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball the Tigers bring back six starters and will have playmakers at every level. Those playmakers will be working in a new defensive system this year as Pete Carter comes to Coweta as the new defensive coordinator after spending last year in that same position at Cascia Hall. In the secondary the Tigers will turn to cornerback Ke’Landus Culton (6-1, 185, Sr.) and safety Austin Addington 42

(6-1, 175, Sr.) to be the kings of the jungle. Last season Culton recorded 30 tackles and also had an interception to his credit while Addington made 54 tackles. On the defensive line, nose guard Tucker Meredith (6-0, 270, Sr.) will be a key figure after making 55 tackles and seven sacks a year ago. In the middle of the defense Jordan Waller (5-11, 190, Jr.) will start at outside linebacker while Braden Calico (6-1, 190, Jr.) will get the nod at inside linebacker. In his sophomore seasons Waller had 41 tackles and six sacks. Calico was just as impressive making 69 tackles, three sacks and picking off one pass.

EAST CENTRAL CARDINALS Coach: CAMERON BENNETT Enrollment: 1086

Schedule: Sept. 4 – vs. Bartlesville Sept. 11 – at Bixby Sept. 18 – at Booker T. Washington Sept. 25 – vs. Tahlequah Oct. 2 – at Coweta Oct. 9 – vs. Thomas Edison Oct. 15 – at Grove Oct. 23 – at Pryor Oct. 30 – Open Nov. 6 – vs. Collinsville

Quick Hits: In spite of missing the playoffs the past two years, East Central is tied with McGuinness for the third most wins in Class 5A this past decade with 97.

The Cardinals also enter 2015 with the second longest winning streak in Class 5A. After dropping the first six contests of 2014, East Central bounced back to claim three straight victories. Defending champ Lawton Mac has won seven in a row. The Cardinals have lost the last two season openers after winning 13 straight from 2000-2012. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 3-6 2013 - 4-7 2012 - 13-1

Chance Lamho

2011 – 10-2 2010 – 12-2

OFFENSE The more things change, the more they stay the same for the Cardinals. The constant factor of speed and athleticism will once again take the field in 2014 including VYPE Top 100 choice Tre’von Cherry at quarterback. A three year starter, Cherry (60, 185, Sr.), who totaled 2,500 yards passing while adding another 800 yards on the ground is a bonafide playmaker on every snap. Drawing the attention of Division-I college recruiters, Cherry has 37-inch vertical leap, 4.46 speed in the 40 and a strong arm passing style. “Tre’von has all the tools,” said head coach Kenny Evans, who begins his first season on the high school level after a lengthy collegiate coaching tenure. “On top of the playmaking skills, he’s got a great football IQ. Tre’von is our coach on the field.” Cuinton Baker (5-9, 160, Sr.) gives Cherry a reliable target at receiver along with a couple of “speed burners” Jayland Brother (6-1, 190, Jr.) and Larry Johnson (5-11, 175, Jr.). “All three of them can go,” notes Evans. “Cuinton has the sure hands, Jayland will catch the ball in a crowd and we love it when we can get Larry open in space.” Adding to the playmaking abilities of the Cardinals’ offense is tight end Joseph Bridgers (6-1, 200, Sr.), described by Evans as a physical receiver and blocker. East Central will have quickness and agility at running back with Aubrey Scales (5-7, 170, Jr.) and Bryce White (5-6, 150, So.). Two year starter Josh Moreno (5-9, 240, Sr.) returns at center brings brute strength to the offensive line along with Anthony Diggs (6-3, 260, Sr.), who Evans notes has all the physical tools coaches desire in an offensive lineman. “The play of the offensive line is going to be a key for us,” said Evans. “They may not be the biggest in Class 5A but they all play with an edge and desire on every snap.” DEFENSE Size, strength and speed are common words used to describe the playmakers on the Cardinals defensive unit. Two such athletes the fit the mold

Larry Johnson

are defensive ends Jon Johnson and Lester Boston. On the radar of Division-I recruiters, Johnson (6-3, 245, Sr.) brings 4.7 speed to bolster his ability to cover to the boundary while bringing pressure up the middle. Boston (6-3, 210, Sr.) brings a wrestler’s mentality to the gridiron with the quickness to run to the football sideline to sideline. “Those two deliver pressure on every snap,” said Evans. “When they turn it loose they can disrupt things in a great way.” Chilton Lamho (6-1, 260, Jr.), tabbed the strongest player on the team by Evans, plugs the middle of the defensive line at nose guard. Although just a sophomore, recruiters have already noted the skills of Raphiel Williams (6-2, 195, So.) at linebacker. “He’s a specimen,” said Evans touting Williams’ playmaking skills. “His size, strength and quickness are natural talents. Raphiel doesn’t know idea good of football player he can be.” The secondary will be fast and physical including Landon Wolf (5-7, 165, So.) who has been impressive in summer team camp and passing leagues. Evans expects Wolf to be a lockdown corner capable of making game changing plays in the East Central defensive packages that Evans plans to keep simple and solid. “We expect to maximize our speed with a physical attack in order to run to the football,” said Evans. “Our ability to stop the run and create turnovers will improve our performance defensively. Jenks High School How long have you been involved with FCA? I have been involved in FCA since my freshman year of high school.

Who influenced you to join? My brother was the vice president of FCA my freshman year and his senior year. We attended the same church on Wednesday nights and following church was FCA. He was my ride so I had no choice but to become involved. I am very grateful that he dragged along his little freshman brother.

How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? FCA exposed me to the giant world of Christian athletes off the field. I have made many new friends and listened to big time athletes speak at FCA events. On the field my eyes have been opened to how God protects my health and the health of others as well as how blessed I am to have Christian brothers around me that love football as much as I do. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? Having a strong faith has affected my abilities as an athlete in many ways. Walking a straight path has allowed me to keep my head in the game. All the distractions of high school can be deadly to any athlete and having a life with God makes my life on the field easier.

What is your favorite Bible verse and why? My favorite bible verse is James 1:2-3 “Consider it pure joy my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that testing of your faith produces perseverance. It can be applied to so many things in life on and off the field. 35-21 last fall. Edison had dropped the past six games in that series by a combined score of 252-20 Edison carded its first winning season in 2014 since finishing 7-4 in 2005.

Edison shut out Hale 51-0 in week three. It was the Eagles first shutout since the season opener in 2007 against John Marshall 36-0. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 6-5 2013 - 4-6 2012 - 1-9 2011 – 0-10 2010 – 2-8

OFFENSE Edison head coach DJ Howell has been nothing but successful in his two years at the school. In his first year Howell finished 4-6, then last season improved that to a 6-5 record, the school’s best record since 2004. This year Howell and the rest of the Edison faithful expect even more improvement. “We are going to keep our head down and go to work each day to get better. Day to day improvement is all that we are concerned with,” Howell said. Nine returning offensive starters should help Howell achieve those goals this year. The biggest strength of the Eagles this year will be their offensive line. Left tackle Tommy Scott (6-5, 255, Sr.) is the leader of that group. Guards Zac Turner (6-1, 275, Sr.) and Mac Crawford (6-2, 250,

Sr.) will also be key members of the Eagles’ offensive front. One person that will definitely benefit from Edison’s offensive line play will be running back Mike Austin (6-0, 230, Sr.). Last season Austin ran for 1,028 yards and 11 touchdowns and will be counted on to be the team’s workhorse again this year. Edison will also have a major weapon on the outside in the form of wide receiver Tony Williams (6-1, 170, Sr.). A year ago Williams caught 25 passes for 750 yards and eight touchdowns.

DEFENSE On defense the Eagles also return nine starters this year and promise to be very strong in their front seven. That strength will also play right into what Howell wants the Edison defense to be, an attacking and physical defense unafraid to hit you in the mouth. “We will be aggressive and sound in our technique. The defense will be built on being physical and relentless,” Howell said. Leading the way for the Eagles’ defense will be VYPE Top 100 selections Alex Criddle (6-4, 309, Sr.) and Marcus Mays (6-1, 190, Jr.). Criddle will play nose guard for the

Eagles this year after recording 55 tackles and a whopping 10 sacks last season. Mays meanwhile will start at defensive back and after picking off five passes last year already has a scholarship offer from Tulane. Working in between those two standout players will be rock-solid group of linebackers. Tre Miller (6-1, 205, Sr.) and Matt Alisio (6-1, 190, Sr.) will both start at outside linebacker while Jonah Hargrove (62, 205, Sr.) will get the nod at inside linebacker. Last season Miller had 18 sacks to his credit and also made 76 tackles and three interceptions. Alisio also had a productive junior season in which he had nine sacks and 48 total tackles. With so many talented players on the field expect Edison to lower their average of 25.3 points per game that they allowed last season even in a very challenging district.

Quick Hits: The Commandos haven’t tasted playoff victory since 2012.

Cascia Hall has won eight or more games in every season dating all the way back to 1996.

Cascia Hall is currently riding a 12-game nondistrict winning streak against such foes as Class 6A Bartlesville and arch rival Holland Hall. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 8-3, 2013 - 9-2, 2012 - 11-1 2011 – 14-1, 2010 – 11-2

AUGUST 2015

OFFENSE The Commandos look forward to the 2015 season with a chance to be a contender for the Class 4A state championship. After losing in the

first round of the playoffs the past two seasons. In 2014 the Commandos had impressive victories over Class 6A Bartlesville and eventual 4A champion Wagoner. The Commandos have made the playoffs for 28 consecutive seasons, winning five state titles and finishing runner-up four times since 1990. Head coach Joe Medina has an overall record of 236-62-2 and is back for his 17th season. The top priority on the offensive side of the ball is to find a starting quarterback to lead the double tight, two back set. James Rouse (6-1, 170, Sr.) and Grant Ward (5-10, 175, Jr.) are both competing for the job. Nathan Dinsmore (6-1, 205, Sr.) leads a talented group of running backs after he recorded over 700 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Dalton Turner (5-9, 165, Jr.) and Brett Boone (6-1, 205, Jr.) offer a good change of pace in the running game. Boone can play both fullback and tailback, while Turner has good speed. The Commandos have several playmakers at receiver including Davis Derr (6-0, 175, Jr.) and newcomer Cannon Montgomery (5-10, 170, Jr.). Jackson McCormick is a big target with speed that can stretch the defense. The offensive line has three returning starters in Nathan Martin (6-1, 300, Sr.), Hunter Hedrick (6-2, 220, Sr.) and Joey Medina (5-9, 220, Jr.). Senior Bradley Tidmore (5-11, 200) and juniors Sam Foster (5-10, 220) and Jesse Wood (6-0, 250) will compete for starting jobs as well. DEFENSE The “Blue Swarm” defense, which employs an aggressive 3-4 scheme returns several key players this season. Boone will lead the way at linebacker with his 96 tackles and one interception from a year ago. Treyson Raley (6-0, 180, Sr.), Garrett Pool (6-0, 190, Sr.) and Jake Hall (5-10, 180, Jr.) enter the fray at linebacker this season. Dinsmore and Davis Lambert (6-2, 200, Jr.) are outside linebackers and excellent pass rushers. The D-line has several key players including Martin, Hedrick, Colt Bennett (6-0, 190, Sr.), Trenton Sims (6-1, 200, Sr.) and Kadar Cohlmia (6-1, 240, Sr.). In the secondary look for McCormick with Zach Powell (5-10, 170, Sr.) and Cade Pruitt (6-0, 180, Sr.) playing the corner positions. Senior Chandler Sokolosky (5-10, 160) gets the start this season making the secondary the strength of the defense. Miles Waller and Tanner Swab will provide excellent depth for the Commandos.

MCLAIN TITANS

Coach: JARVIS PAYNE SR. Enrollment: 570

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Mannford Sept. 11 – at NOAH Sept. 18 – vs. Hilldale Sept. 25 – vs. Catoosa Oct. 2 – vs. Vinita Oct. 9 – at Cleveland Oct. 15 – at Wagoner Oct. 23 – vs. Miami Oct. 30 – at Cascia Hall Nov. 6 – vs. Oologah

Quick Hits: In spite of having two winning records in the past five years, the Titans last qualified for the playoffs back in 2008.

The Titans offense got off to a quick start in 2014 scoring 109 points in the first three games. It faded quickly in district play, McLain posted only 44 points in its final seven games of the year. McLain heads into the season losers of eight straight district games. Their last win came against Vinita in week nine of 2013 Last 5 Years: 2014 - 2-8 2013 - 5-5 2012 - 7-3 2011 – 6-4 2010 – 2-8

OFFENSE Coming into last season fans of the McLain Titans knew they could see their team go through some growing pains after graduating a very talented class. Not only did McLain have to put a very young team on the field last year they were also bitten with the injury bug making things even tougher. This year the Titans hope to get back to winning ways behind a nasty offensive line and an electric ground game. Leading the offensive line this year will be Curtis Johnson (5-9, 280, Sr.). Last season Johnson was injured all year and is eager to leave his mark ion the program in his senior campaign. Also starting on the offensive line this year will be returning starters Rayford Anderson (5-8, 240, Jr.) and Danaco Todd (5-8, 230, So.). Running behind McLain’s big offensive line will be Joshua Jacobs (5-11, 192, Sr.). Jacobs has started in each of the past two seasons and has eclipsed 1,000 yards in each of those years. Another key playmaker for the McLain offense this year will be wide receiver Ty Neal (5-11, 170,

Sr.). New to the starting lineup, Neal will be expected to make a big impact as he takes his turn in a long line of talented receivers at McLain.

DEFENSE The Titans defense will return six starters this year and be a unit that attacks their opponents with devastating speed. Outside linebacker Jelani Lewis (5-9, 200, Sr.) is a player a lot of people will have their eyes on after he made 100 tackles and seven sacks last season. Marquis Ezell (5-11, 232, Jr.) will play alongside Lewis in the middle of the defense starting at middle linebacker. As a sophomore Ezell made 82 tackles and also recorded six sacks. Rounding out McLain’s group of talented linebackers will be Troy Draper (5-7, 160, Jr.), a player who contributed 34 tackles to the team last year. In the secondary, safety Antron Patterson (5-8, 180, Sr.) returns this season after making 39 tackles and intercepting three passes last season. Cornerback Michael Perry-Fowler (5-10, 170, Sr.) also picked off three passes last year and will be back to terrorize quarterbacks this year.

CENTRAL BRAVES Coach: DON GIBSON Enrollment: 599

Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Memorial Sept. 4 – vs. Memorial Sept. 11 – vs. Washington Sept. 18 – at Northwest Classen Sept. 25 – vs. Broken Bow Oct. 2 – at Sallisaw Oct. 9 – vs. Ft. Gibson Oct. 15 – at Muldrow Oct. 23 – vs. Stilwell Oct. 30 – at Metro Christian Nov. 6 – vs. Poteau

Quick Hits: Central defeated Northwest Classen 46-0 in week three. It was the sixth straight victory against teams from Oklahoma City. The Braves blanked both Northwest and Muldrow marking the first time they have recorded two shutouts in the same season

since 2011.

After finishing 8-3 in 2011, the Braves have won a combined seven games. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 2-8 2013 - 3-7 2012 - 3-7 2011 – 8-3 2010 – 5-5

OFFENSE The Braves fell on hard times last year finishing the season with a 2-8 record. This year Central hopes to improve on that record with the help of a veteran roster and an offensive attack that features the run and pass equally. “We will be a balanced, spread attack. We return 10 starters on offense and played a lot of freshmen and sophomores last season,” head coach Don Gibson said. “We have good size up front and we are athletic at our skill positions. We want to try and spread teams out and let those guys operate in space.” Chief among those skill players is wide receiver Kyandre Lyons (5-9, 165, Sr.). Running back Rodney Williams (5-9, 160, Jr.) and quarterback Saboor Daniels (5-11, 160, Jr.) will also be key playmakers in the Central offense. Center Josh Neal (6-0, 280, So.) and guard Devonte Houston (60, 282, Sr.) will bring the size and strength to the offensive line and give the Braves’ playmakers time to do what they do best. DEFENSE On defense the Braves also return a big amount of starters, with nine players coming back this year. Gibson said the Braves will play fast and physical this season playing a good amount of zone defense but blitzing when the opportunity is there. On the defensive front Shemarr Robinson (6-3, 285, Sr.) will be a key player for the Braves playing defensive tackle and defensive end depending on the situation. Linebackers Larrion McBride (511, 205, Jr.) and Kionn Johnson (6-1, 195, Sr.) will also be a part of the front seven this year and asked to use their athleticism to make plays on the ball whether

it stays on the ground or gets put into the air. In the secondary Tre Sheppard (5-9, 165, Sr.) and Chancey Boyd (5-8, 160, Sr.) will anchor the back end of the defense for the Braves. Overall, Gibson said he is excited about where his team is at and where he thinks they will go. “We put in a lot of work in the weight room this offseason and we learned a lot of football too. I like the attitude of the team and their ability to want more,” Gibson said. “We feel good about the direction of the program and look forward to a fun football season.”

BERRYHILL CHIEFS Coach: PAT HARPER Enrollment: 425

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Glenpool Sept. 11 – vs. Cushing Sept. 18 – vs. Beggs Sept. 25 – at Seqouyah Claremore Oct. 2 – vs. Verdigris Oct. 9 – vs. Sperry Oct. 15 – at Webster Oct. 23 – at Dewey Oct. 30 – vs. Kellyville Nov. 6 – at Lincoln Christian

Last 5 Years: 2014 - 10-2, 2013 - 9-3, 2012 9-2 2011- 12-2, 2010 - 5-6 OFFENSE With some new faces on the offensive side of the ball, head coach Pat Harper will need younger, less experienced players to step up and take on starting roles this season. “We want a balanced offensive attack. We should be able to both run and throw the ball well and play physical up front. Will have many kids starting their first varsity games and will have to grow up fast,” said coach Harper. That physical offensive line is led by Jake Martin (6-3, 300, Jr.). Martin will occupy one of the tackle positions, while Craig Redfearn (5-11, 250, Sr.) will start at guard. The pair bring experience and toughness to the line. Quarterback Nycholas Burns (6-4, 185, Sr.) has the arm

Brayden Bradshaw to get the ball downfield, but he also has help in the running game. Will Garner (5-10, 160, Sr.) will handle most of the running duties, while wide receiver Brayden Bradshaw (5-10, 160, Sr.) could become the go-to target in the passing game. “We’re very excited about the upcoming season. We will have a lot of new players earning their first starting positions. We have to fill a lot of positions with new starters because of graduation, but we are filling those positions with good young athletes who are hungry and excited about continuing the winning tradition that is Berryhill football,” said coach Harper.

DEFENSE Coach Harper wants his defense to play with speed and swarm the football. Defensive end Cacy Harper (6-3, 225, Sr.) will lead a talented group on defense. That group also includes defensive tackle Hayden Hunter (5-11, 250, Sr.). The pair of seniors will give the Chiefs a good push up front and give the linebackers led by Talon Wilson (5-11, 220, Sr.) an opportunity to make a lot of plays. The secondary features two quick corners in Trey Walker (5-10, 160, Jr.) and Mason Belcher (5-10, 150, Sr.). Both players have a nose for the ball and play hard on every down. Expect to see a few new faces at linebacker as the team looks to fill spots in the 4-4 scheme. “We’ll have a fast defense that

should be very aggressive to the ball. Same situation with young players. We will have to start fast and improve every week,” said Harper.

KELLYVILLE PONIES Coach: Scott Robb Enrollment: 331

Schedule: Sept. 4 – vs. Kiefer Sept. 11 – at Caney Valley Sept. 18 – at Liberty Sept. 25 – vs. Sperry Oct. 2 – at Daniel Webster Oct. 9 – vs. Dewey Oct. 15 – vs. Keys Oct. 23 – vs. Lincoln Christian Oct. 30 – at Berryhill Nov. 6 – at Verdigris Last 5 Years: 2014 - 2-8 2013 - 2-8 2012 - 010 2011- 5-5 2010 – 3-7

OFFENSE After finishing last year with a 2-8 record the Ponies hope to use seven returning offensive starters to hit a full gallop this season and make a run at the playoffs. “There is excitement about this season, because our players feel like they have worked hard enough in the offseason to deserve to win,” Kellyville head coach Scott Robb said.

Leading the charge for the Ponies offense this year will be quarterback Dakota McDougal (6-3, 175, Sr.). In his career at Kellyville McDougal has thrown for 2,401 yards and 23 touchdowns and also ran for 741 yards and six touchdowns, proving he is a threat to make plays both with his arm and his legs. Wide receivers Carson Blevins (6-1, 160, Sr.) and Casey Williams (5-8, 125, Jr.) will be two skill players McDougal relies heavily on this year. A year ago Blevins caught 24 passes for 321 yards and five touchdowns but also had 152 yards rushing and one score on the ground. Another key offensive skill player for the Ponies will be Gavin Sharpe (5-8, 160, So.), a player who got some time as a freshman and after a very good summer expects to contribute in a big way. Kellyville’s offensive line will also have a key leader in tackle Caleb Robb (6-1, 215, Jr.). DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Murray and Robb will both play on the line starting at defensive tackle and defensive end respectively. Randy Chavez (5-4, 200, Sr.) and Kolton Peterson (5-9, 185, Sr.) will join them in the trenches. At linebacker expect James Hughes (5-8, 150, Sr.) and Brendan Stites (5-11, 160, Jr.) to make up a fearsome duo of tacklers. With those players up front coach Robb said he expects the Ponies to be a much improved team when it comes to stopping the run. “We should be better against the run than we were last year. Our work in the weight room will allow us to not get pushed off our patch of grass up front,” Robb said. In the secondary McDougal should get some time at free safety. Blevins will also play a big role on the back end of the defense starting at cornerback.

Sept. 4 – vs. Adair Sept. 11 – at Sequoyah Claremore Sept. 18 – at Inola Sept. 25 – at Kellyville Oct. 2 – vs. Lincoln Christian Oct. 9 – at Berryhill Oct. 15 – at Verdigris Oct. 23 – vs. Jay Oct. 30 – at Daniel Webster Nov. 6 – vs. Dewey Last 5 Years: 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 1-9 2012: 3-7 2011: 4-6 2010: 8-2

OFFENSE In 2014 the Sperry Pirates made their way to the Class 3A playoffs but their ship hit rough seas and was scuttled after a 41-27 first round loss to Checotah. This season the Pirates are hoping for a deeper postseason run as they bring back six offensive starters. Running back Jacob Waits (5-8, 165, Sr.) will be the man helping to navigate the Pirates on their journey this year. Last season, as a junior, Waits ran for 1,200 yards and will be looking to do that and more this season. Fellow back Brannon Hussey (5-8, 150, Jr.) will also get a good amount of carries this year and be a key cog in the offensive system. Finally look for both backs to get a lot of help up front from offensive lineman Derek Bay (63, 260, Sr.). “We will have a strong running game with the return of our top rusher Jacob Waits and what we think will be a solid offensive line with Derek Bay being the leader of that group,” Sperry head coach Robert Park said. “We are going to play physical and from what I have seen this spring our staff and players are hungry.”

DEFENSE Sperry’s offensive unit may have a good amount of returning firepower but the defense is a bit of a different story. Only four starters return to the Pirates’ defense this year but one group in particular has coach Park excited. “We graduated some good players a year ago but we think this bunch has a good mix of strength and speed. Consistency at linebacker will also be a big key for us,” Park said. Outside linebacker Gus Tabor (6-1, 170, Sr.) will be the tip of the spear for the Sperry defense and is expected to rack up a good amount of tackles. On the defensive line Jarret Brown (510, 230, Jr.) is expected to give the team a huge boost. Finally, defensive back Brannon Hussey (5-8, 150, Jr.) will also be a key player to watch this season.

LINCOLN CHRISTIAN BULLDOGS Coach: DARREN MELTON Enrollment: 295

Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Davis Sept. 11 – vs. Holland Hall

Now Enrofollr ing Summer

Sept. 18 – vs. Oklahoma Christian School Sept. 25 – at Verdigris Oct. 2 – at Sperry Oct. 9 – vs. Daniel Webster Oct. 15 – vs. Dewey Oct. 23 – at Kellyville Oct. 30 – at Sequoyah Tahlequah Nov. 6 – vs. Berryhill Last 5 Years: 2014 - 10-3 2013-8-5 2012 - 7-4 2011- 11-2 2010 - 10-3

OFFENSE Lincoln Christian hasn’t won a gold ball since 2009 when they blasted Kingfisher 35-0 and won the Class 2A crown. The Bulldogs could add more gold to their trophy case this year behind a highpowered offense that returns 10 offensive starters. The man behind the wheel of Lincoln’s high-octane offensive machine is quarterback and VYPE Top 100 selection Micah Wilson (6-3, 205, Sr.). Wilson, who is already committed to play at Boise State next fall threw for 2,371 yards and 34 touchdowns last year and ran for another 549 yards and six touchdowns on 83 carries. Wilson’s top target this

year will be wide receiver Alec Davidson (6-1, 175, Sr.) who was also a Top 100 selection. In 2014 Davidson caught 65 passes for 1,148 yards and 17 touchdowns. Jake White (5-8, 170, Sr.) will also be a big threat at receiver this year for the Bulldogs after pulling in 34 passes last year for 473 yards and six touchdowns. It’s not all about the pass in Lincoln Christian’s offense though; something that running backs Brady Williams (5-11, 170, So.) and Reed Martin (6-0, 204, Jr.) are eager to prove. As a freshman Williams carried the ball 153 times and racked up 908 yards and 10 touchdowns. Martin also had a productive year last fall rushing for 635 yards and 11 touchdowns on 92 carries. DEFENSE On defense the Bulldogs won’t have quite as much experience to lean on with only six returning starters. Along with starring at receiver on offense, Davidson will be a key player for the Lincoln Christian defense this year starting at strong safety. In his junior campaign Davidson made 58 tackles, intercepted eight passes and scored three defensive

touchdowns. Free safety Landon Brown (6-2, 190, Jr.) will also play a key role in the secondary this season after making 59 tackles and picking off one pass last year. Seth Keith (6-2, 200, Sr.) who recorded 124 tackles and intercepted two passes last season will start at linebacker this year and spearhead Lincoln’s front seven. Defensive end Levi Duninck (5-10, 204, Sr.) and nose guard Caleb Starr (6-0, 215, Sr.) bring a good deal of athleticism to that group as well. As juniors, Duninck and Starr combined for 104 tackles and will be looking to do that and more this year.

OFFENSE Head coach Kenny Jackson wants to play the power game on offense using hard running tailback TyHran Harrison (5-10, 180, Sr.). Last year Harrison rushed for 392 yards on 61 carries. Harrison brings a unique style with his power between the tackles. Quarterback Kuhmar Shannon (5-10, 180, Sr.), also a threat to run, threw for 885 yards completing 46 of 74 attempts. He recorded 17 touchdowns to only six interceptions. Wide receivers Joshua Black (5-10, 170, Jr.) and Zachary McAnelly (6-0, 170, Sr.) will stretch the field and give the offense more options in the passing game. Black accounted for four touchdowns last year, while McAnelly had five receptions for 55 yards. Providing some stability on the offensive line is junior Jeffery Mansker (5-10, 210). The offensive line will need younger players to step up and mature if the Warriors want to have some success up front. “Offensively we want a power game and play aggressive on defense. We must finish strong,” said Jackson.

DEFENSE Several players will go both ways for the Warriors including Zachary McAnelly who will start at strong safety on the defensive side of the ball. Derrick McAnelly (5-10, 190, Jr.) gets the nod at linebacker where he recorded 54 tackles last season. Leading tackler Derrick Buggs (6-0, 190, Jr.) notched 128 tackles in 2014. Buggs turned heads with his play and expects to have schools at the next level come knocking on his door soon. Defensive end James Boone (6-0, 180, Sr.) pressures the offense from the edge and has the motor to run down backs from the backside. Boone recorded 72 tackles last season. Lionel Cruz (5-10, 200, Jr.) has the responsibility of plugging the middle from his defensive tackle

position. Cruz can use his quickness to penetrate the backfield and create turnovers. The secondary will be tested in a district that features a D1 quarterback and several teams that run the spread offense.

VERDIGRIS CARDINALS Coach: TONY DANIELS Enrollment: 349

OFFENSE After going 7-4 last year and making it to the Class 3A playoffs the Verdigris Cardinals bring back seven offensive starters and should feature a balanced attack with playmakers both in the backfield and on the outside. Running backs Dylan Hight (5-9, 170, Jr.) and Hunter Hutchison (5-10, 180, Jr.) are both back this year after having productive sophomore seasons. In 2014 Hight ran for 707 yards and had 13 touchdowns while Hutchison scampered for 300 yards of his own and piled up five touchdowns. When Verdigris does choose to put the ball in the air look for Staton Brasher (6-1, 180, Sr.) and Laurence Daniel (6-0, 225, Sr.) to be on the receiving end of a good chunk of passes. Brasher will start at receiver after making eight catches for 129 yards last year. Daniel meanwhile will start at tight end and is a physical blocker along with being a good pass catcher that averaged 13 yards per catch a year ago. On the offensive line Blaine Saxon (6-2, 250, Jr.) will be ex-

pected to be the team’s catalyst in the trenches.

DEFENSE With seven defensive starters back this year the Cardinals defense will be a unit that preys on weaker opponents and punishes them for their mistakes. On the defensive line Justin Cody (6-0, 225, Sr.) and Triston Willis (6-0, 245, Sr.) are two players with the size to overpower opponents and the speed to slice their way into the backfield and be disruptive forces. Last season Cody made 76 tackles and recorded four sacks while Willis made 47 tackles and added six sacks. Just behind the two talented defensive linemen will be where fans can find Hight wreaking havoc at linebacker. As a sophomore Hight made 120 tackles, posted seven sacks and also intercepted a pass. Safety Devin Bressie (5-6, 130, Sr.) may be a bit undersized for his position but his production is anything but small. In his junior season Bressie made 72 tackles, intercepted three passes and broke up seven passes. Acie Carpenter (5-9, 170, Jr.) will also be a key defensive back in the Ver-

digris lineup after making 30 tackles last season, recovering five fumbles and breaking up 10 passes.

The Will Rogers Ropers started out with a 3-1 record in 2014 before losing five games in a row, giving up 50 points or more in four of those games. Although they struggled, that does not hinder their hopes for this season. “We are loaded with seniors for the first time since the reopening of Will Rogers College High,” Will Rogers head coach James Burkhalter said. “We are expecting great things from our starting running back Laqurious Taft and sophomore quarterback Lafayette Wright on the offensive side of the ball.” The Ropers return eight starters on the offensive side of things. Laqurious Taft (5-8, 165, Sr.), who is a VYPE Top 100 selectee, and Lafayette Wright (6-2, 170, So.) headline that group of returnees. Last season, Taft ran for 1,193 yards last season as a junior. Wright is ready to step in and make big throws. Jamal Wolfe (5-10, 180, Sr.) will be an anchor on the offensive line from the tackle position. Keishun Johnson (5-10, 165, So.) will be Wright’s top target in the passing game this season. He is a hard worker who has good pass catching abilities. DEFENSE The Ropers return nine starters to their defense that struggled to slow offenses down in 2014. After a full offseason of work, this defense will be much stronger than 2014. Burkhalter wants a well-balanced, fast paced defense, and he should get that with the talent he has. “We will be a better balanced team this year,” Burkhalter said. “A lot of our focus is developing our younger athletes while also showing more discipline. Defensively, we are looking at a strong linebacker core led by senior Jawane Mason and junior Deravion Owens.” Jawane Mason (5-10, 200, Sr.) is the vocal leader of the defense from the linebacker position. Deravion Owens (5-8, 195, Jr.) will be he is partner in crime. Kevin Jeffries (5-9, 195, Sr.) is a great run stopper from the nose tackle position. Lazarus Liggins (5-7, 165, Sr.) is the captain of the secondary unit. He is a great pass defender who has good ball skills. Knotea Lofton (5-8, 173,

climb to the top of Class 3A. Back for one more season as the quarterback of the Conquerors is three-time VYPE Top 100 selection Keats Calhoon (6-2, 185, Sr.). Calhoon threw for 3,171 yards and 27 touchdowns and if Calhoon can throw for 2,962 yards this year he will break the state’s all-time passing yards record currently held by former Atoka quarterback L.T. Pfaff. One player sure to pull in a lot of passes in Victory’s vaunted offensive attack is tight end and VYPE Top 100 selection JonMichael Terry (6-4, 242, Sr.). Terry, who already has verbally committed to the University of Oklahoma, caught 50 passes for 645 yards and five touchdowns as a junior. Running back Miguel Adesokan (6-1, 217, Sr.) will also factor heavily into the Victory Christian offense this year after running for 375 yards and seven touchdowns on 72 carries last season. With so many skill players in the Conquerors’ lineup somebody will have to do the dirty work that so often goes unnoticed. This year that task falls to an offensive line led by center Noah Tedescuscci (6-1, 255, Sr.). DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball

Victory Christian promises to be strong up front with Terry starting at defensive end and Geno Hannah (5-10, 275, Sr.) and Solomon Godwin (6-2, 340, Sr.) starting at the defensive tackle spots. Linebacker Jake Lane (6-1, 210, Sr.) will also be a key player in Victory’s aggressive and attacking defensive scheme. Free safety Caleb Calhoon (6-1, 174, So.) will also be a player to watch this season. A player with a nose for the football, expect Calhoon to give opposing quarterbacks pause before they decide to put the ball in the air. After allowing an average of 21 points per game last year the Victory Christian defense knows that if they can lower that number even more they will have a great chance to add some hardware to their trophy case come December.

Rejoice Christian Eagles COACH: BRENT MARLEY ENROLLMENT: 142 Last 5 Years: 2010 - 6-5 2011 - 8-1 2012 - 11-2 2013 - 12-1 2014 - 6-6

OFFENSE New head coach Brent Marley brings a new confidence and a new offense to the Eagles. Coach Marley admits the spread offense will be different from the double-wing/flex-bone attack the players are used to, but he’s confident the talent is there to make the spread work. “The offense will be more balanced with the addition of throwing the ball more. Multiple skill players will have the opportunity to get the ball. We must improve fast offensively early on in the season to prepare for district play,” said Marley. Bryan Mead (6-3, 235, Sr.) returns to the quarterback position, but he may share some time with Cade Henson (5-9, 175, Jr.) depending on the set. Henson will also play some wide receiver. Chad Stephens (6-0, 180, Sr.), Brayden Revard (5-11, 170, Sr.), Andrew Crow (5-11, 135, Fr.), Hunter Perry (6-0, 185, Jr.), Kaleb Brim (5-9, 155, So.) and

Bryce Sanchez (5-11, 210, Jr.) all figure into the passing game. Stephens will handle the kicking duties and was named to the AllVYPE preseason team. Running ball will be Trevor White (5-10, 185, Sr.), Grant Hutchinson (510, 165, Sr.) and Henson.

DEFENSE The Eagles will run a multiple set defense with multiple players coming in and out of the game. The linebackers will lead this defense and coach Marley admits they are the strength of the unit. “The proven strength of the defense is the linebackers. Mead, White, and Perry all return to the defense. The line will consist of Carson Danley (6-1, 235, Jr.), Joel Woods (6-3, 270, Jr.), Lane Melone (5-10, 245, So.), Ryan Hiatt (6-0, 165, Jr.), Sanchez and Hutchinson with Caleb Scott (63, 205, Sr.) at defensive end,” said Marley. The secondary returns Revard, Brim and Stephens. Owasso transfer Henson figures into the mix as well. Also look for sophomore Garrett Tredway (5-7, 145) and Andrew Crow to see time on defense. “Everything we have installed on both sides of the ball is a lot different from what our players have done in the past. They have been focused through spring and have done a good job understanding the new schemes to this point. That must continue and it is imperative that we stay healthy,” said Marley. OFFENSE

Long road trips to Texas will be a thing of the past after this season as Holland Hall breaks away from their long time affiliation with the Southwest Preparatory Conference and will join the OSSAA next season. Tag Gross feels positive about this upcoming season, acknowledging that they need to get off to a good start against Casady, their conference opener. Offensively, they have six returning starters, including a very good group of wide receivers; a mobile quarterback and a good ground game. The triggerman in the Dutch one back, shotgun offense is Dakota Roush (5-11, 180, Sr.). He is a true dual-threat quarterback that can make it happen with his arm and legs. Up front will be Ben Hardin (6-4, 290, Sr.) at right tackle. Hardin received All Conference honors last season and has been getting a lot of collegiate attention that will develop into DI offers. The wide receiver crew includes Jake Van Hooser (5-10, 170, Sr.), Tanner Thompson (511, 180, Sr.) and CJ Thompson (5-11, 170, Jr.). They are a talented trio that should give Roush a lot of good looks as well as open up the ground game. Van Hooser looks to gain conference honors again this year. DEFENSE

The defense has six returning starters as well. The Dutch run a 3-4 base defense which Gross said, “I think we will be solid up front with a talented back seven, but it is inexperienced”. Leading 09/25/2015 4:00 pm @Hockaday (Dallas) 09/26/2015 - 11:00am vs.Greenhill 10/02/2015 - 4:00pm

Dakota Roush the way will be Anthony Armour (6-3, 245, Sr.). Armour is a very good pass rusher with a lot of potential. He received All-SPC first team honors as a junior and is getting collegiate offers as well. Also on the line is defensive end, Spencer Sutton (6-4, 245, Sr.). The linebacker position should be strong and should get better as the season goes on and they get more experience. QUEENS OF THE COURT Tulsa area volleyball teams ready to compete for gold. with 268 kills, 22 blocks and 94 aces. Maddie Madewell will be a big opposite hitter for Rejoice this year after racking up 48 kills and 47 aces last year. Rounding out the top returners in junior setter Kory Burr. Last year Burr was credited with 434 assists and 79 aces.

Brially Borden - Regent REJOICE CHRISTIAN After finishing 2014 with a 19-18 overall record the Lady Eagles return several key players and are setting their sights on another trip to the state tournament. “We are excited about the season. We were really young last year but we jelled at the end of the season and qualified for the state tournament,” head coach Wally Poplin said.

Five starters return from last year’s team and should help the Lady Eagles rack up even more wins this year on their way to the state tournament. Up front everything will turn around middle hitter Serena Nicholls. Last season Nicholls has 440 kills, 58 blocks and 161 aces. Outside hitter Amy Gower is also returning after registering 211 kills and 174 aces a year ago.

Avery Jones is another key returner this year and will likely see most of her time at middle hitter. In 2014 Jones finished

As far as newcomers go look for Katelyn Dills to step up in a big way this year as an opposite hitter for the Lady Eagles. CATOOSA

In 2014 Catoosa claimed a spot in the Class 4A state tournament but finished 22-15 after a first round loss to Mount St. Mary. This year the Indians are hoping for a return trip to state behind a good mix of young talent and veteran leadership according to head coach Carolyn Replogle. “We are looking to get young players experience this year and expect strong play from our veteran players,” Replogle said.

Defensive specialist Yesenia Valezquez should play a major role this year in her senior season after finishing with 317 digs as a junior. Fellow defensive specialist and senior Madison Arguelles will also be a key cog in the Catoosa game plan this year as she comes off a junior season in which she had 161 digs. Outside hitter Madison Chalupa and middle blocker Alyssa Shew will be the leaders at the net this year. A year ago

Chalupa finished with 142 kills and could easily up that number this year.

Last but not least expect setter Sara Robertson to be a big part of everything Catoosa does on the court. In 2014 Robertson had 281 assists and could easily crack the 300 mark this season with some very talented hitters playing alongside her. BISHOP KELLEY

The Lady Comets have long been a team most people think of when they think about a volleyball powerhouse. That belief was reinforced again last year when Kelley earned a spot at the Class 6A state tournament and finished the year 21-12. This year the Comets will be facing a bit of an uphill climb according to head coach Jerri Berna. “It’s a rebuilding year. We experienced some losses in graduation and family relocation but we are looking forward to the challenge,” Berna said.

Returning starters Lexi Gogets and Grace Wood will both be players that Berna relys on heavily. A senior, Gogets had 283 digs as a junior and will be the Lady Comets’ starting libero. Wood meanwhile is a junior outside hitter and registered 131 kills and 56 blocks last year.

Other returning players who saw a good deal of time last year are junior defensive specialists Jessi Gomez and Kaitlyn Hurst. Gomez may see some time at outside hitter this year depending on how the lineup shakes out but either way the junior is likely to make a big impact. Other players to watch for this year are seniors Libby Easterling, Emma Hottovy and Alaina Molinax. Juniors Claire Raschen and Reagan Roth are also likely to see quality time.

Berna added that Riley Hyroop, Micaela Martin and Stony Thorpe will also be

big parts of the Lady Comets’ roster this year. OWASSO

Fresh off a 24-9 season that saw the Lady Rams advance all the way to the Class 6A state tournament the Lady Rams are looking to pick up just where they left off. Head coach Meghann Turner said that process will begin with filling a few spots vacated due to graduation but added that she felt the younger players in the program were capable of doing just that. “We will be looking to fill two big outside positions, but we have the younger players to do it. We also have five starters back which will make for an exciting season,” Turner said.

Seniors Tate Tieperman, Rylee Peterson, Gracie Martin, Jordan Kunka, Dani Oliver and Mady Mullinax should all be leaders this year for the Lady Rams according to coach Turner.

Juniors Emma Neighbors, Madison Hall and Macy Ramsey all should also get quality time this year as will sophomore outside hitter Mya Bhinhar. A

gifted athlete Bhinhar already has received Division I interest for basketball, including a scholarship offer from the University of Arkansas. Owasso will begin its season Aug. 11 when they host Sapulpa and will get big tests early on with Edmond Memorial on Aug. 14 and Lincoln Christian on Aug. 20. REGENT PREP

The Lady Rams were the Class 3A state champions last year but lost the majority of their varsity roster to graduation. Those roster changes will alter the strengths and weaknesses of the team this year according to head coach Michael Christie but the goals will remain the same.

“Our offense will not be as strong this year but we will be better defensively and we will be more of a ball-control team. I think if everyone stays healthy, then we have a good chance at getting back to the state tournament,” Christie said. Leading the team this year will be juniors Mykaela Mazzei and Emma

Emma Neighbors - Owasso Panter. Mazzei has been the team’s libero but this year may slide over to play outside hitter with Panter moving to the libero spot. Sophomore Brially Borden will also be a key player for the Lady Rams this year starting at middle blocker.

TULSA AREA SOFTBALL PREVIEW Several schools in the metro-area are ready to hit the diamond. ing to head coach Jerry Pease.

“We are very excited about the 2015 season, we are looking forward to the growth of our team since last year on and off the field, We have some very exciting players and are looking forward to them coming together to achieve the goals they have set for themselves,” Pease said.

Clara Bewley - Union SAND SPRINGS A year ago the Lady Sandites and head coach Shelli Brown kept their tradition of great softball going and finished the year 25-11. In 2015, Sand Springs will be looking to improve on that mark and reach the state tournament. “We have a great senior class and more experienced players this year. We are hoping the leadership and experience will help lead the team this year,” Brown said.

Just like most strong teams everything starts in the circle for the Lady Sandites. Senior Kennedy “Goose” Salyers will be one major arm in the Sand Springs rotation this season but will also see time in left field as well. Sydney Pennington, a junior, is the other pitcher the Lady Sandites will rely on to rack up big innings this year. When not in the circle, Pennington will be the team’s starting shortstop. Last year Pennington was the team’s leader in batting average, hitting .553 with Salyers finishing second in that category with a .505 average. Other key veteran players to watch this year will be senior first baseman Jessica Schuler, junior center fielder Jessica Collins and senior catcher Kali Mallory. A year ago Schuler hit .429 while Collins was just behind her batting an impressive .425. Mallory is another dangerous hitter in the Lady Sandites lineup and hit .351 in 2014. Freshmen Madelyn Blair and Jacie Taber could also play key roles this year according to Brown. UNION

The Lady Redskins finished 32-9 last year and made it all the way to the Class 6A state tournament before losing 2-1 in the first round to eventual state champion Mustang. This year expectations are running high at Union accord54

AUGUST 2015

Leading the team this year will be returning all-district players Kayla Crutchmer, Lexy Dobson and Mikayle Willard. Crutchmer is a senior and will start in ceterfield this year and be a dangerous hitter at the top of the order after batting .522 last year. Willard is also a senior and is likely to see time both in the circle as one of the Lady Redskins’ main pitchers and also play some third base. Dobson meanwhile is only a junior and hit a whopping .420 last year and should see time both in the infield and the outfield this year. Catcher MaKenzie Addis, outfielders Sami Dutton and Lilly Wasson along with pitcher and third baseman Paige Boyle all are back this year after hitting above .300 last season. Shortstop Aaliyah Villalobos, versatile Clara Bewley and corner infielder Britton Clark will all also likely be key players in the Union lineup this year. GLENPOOL

A team that has racked up the wins in bunches lately the Lady Warriors finished 29-10 last season. This year figures to be no different with Glenpool returning a hefty amount of seniors and experienced players. “These girls learned last year how to become a team and how to win. Our goal this year is to become champions,” head coach Trent Patterson said. “We were disappointed going out in the regional final last year and that has been the motivation that has pushed these girls for nine months to put in work in the cages or on the field. They got a taste of success last year; now they are hungry for a deep run this year.”

Last year’s conference Defensive Player of the Year Callie Taylor returns to start in centerfield for the Lady Warriors. Taylor isn’t just a defensive specialist though, she hit a whopping .402 last year, stole 20 bases and scored 45 runs. Pitcher Hannah Pryce is another key returner after finishing as the conference Pitcher of the Year in 2014. Last year as a junior Pryce finished with 24 wins and a 1.92 ERA and could see a jump in those numbers this season. Other key players this year will be catcher Courtlyn Head, first baseman Rylee Lowry and third baseman Gentry McGowen. All three players were all-conference first team selections a year ago and should put up big numbers in 2015. Finally look for left fielder Robbie Summers,

right fielder Kodie Carpenter and second baseman Taylor McGuire to all have big seasons this year. All three players hit over .300 last year and should do that and more this fall. LINCOLN CHRISTIAN

The Lady Bulldogs have piled up the wins over the last few years, including 27 in 2014, but missing in all of the wins has been a state tournament appearance. This year head coach Jason Brown and his team will be looking to take that next step behind quality pitching and a talented young group of players. “We will have a lot of turnover from a team that has posted back-to-back 27 win seasons. We graduated five starters and will be replacing them with a big freshman class,” Brown said. “We will be young but with youth comes a renewed spirit; so we look to continue the tradition that we have built at Lincoln.”

The player that everything will circle around this year will be the player in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs. Senior Adrianna Fuls currently holds every pitching record at Lincoln and will just add to those this year. The team’s top returning hitter will be senior Dani Etter. Etter will be moving to catcher for her senior season as she replaces slugger Baylor Nelson who graduated in May.

Other key players to watch this year are sophomore first baseman Jensen Turner, senior outfielder Hailey Hubbard along with juniors Lauren Dixon, Lauren Price nd Mariana Balbontin.

Freshmen Allison Helland, Amberly Koehn, Anna Autobo and Ariana Cruz all figure to get major playing time this year. Helland will likely play shortstop with Autobo also working in the infield at first base. Koehn meanwhile should get some time in the circle with Cruz starting in the outfield.
