VYPE’s Lynn Jacobsen caught up with former Jenks standout and NFL veteran Sean Mahan to discuss his time at Jenks High School, Notre Dame and the NFL. Find out what Mahan has planned for the future and his thoughts on his playing career.
A letter from Austin Chadwick
Small Schools, Big Games Is there anything better than a football game on Friday night? We’ve all grown accustom to the bright lights and big games of the large schools, but small school football is alive and well in Oklahoma. The Kiefer Trojans come to mind as a team that continues to improve and attract attention. Head coach Josh Calvert has this team looking like a playoff team again this year so we took some time to catch up with the Trojans. One team that seems to be a permanent fixture at the top is Cascia Hall. Lynn Jacobsen and head coach Joe Medina discuss the move to Class 4A and what he expects from his team this season. Booker T. Washington won their first and only volleyball state title in 1976. This years squad may be as good as that team from ’76, but first they have to continue dominating Class 5A and face some giants in the state tournament. Softball fans are very familiar with the Owasso Rams. Head coach Shane Eicher has the Lady Rams playing like a team on a mission. Is this the year they leave their names in the record books? Many softball experts think so.
As always we would like to thank all of our fans, athletes, parents and coaches help make VYPE what it is, the best high school sports publication in the state. Settling for second place is not something the Lady Rams of Owasso are comfortable with. This season they are focused on finishing every game and making the state tournament. Head coach Shane Eicher gave VYPE a little insight to the team and their goals this season.

Let us know what we’re doing right or what we need to do better. We love to hear from readers. Or if you have an event, a team or an athlete we need to cover, give us the heads-up. Send your comments to Oklahoma@vype.com. —Brad Heath, Editor
Backyard Blues First I like the fact that Broken Arrow was finally included in this conversation. Broken Arrow is in the backyards of both Jenks and Union and they deserve the coverage. Has the Backyard Bowl lost some of its luster? I mean it seems like this is no longer the biggest game of the year. It’s just another game. Scott M. Tulsa, OK
Football Frenzy The rivalry issue needs to be expanded. There are so many good rivalries out there that everyone in the media tends to focus on just a few games. I think you’re coverage is good, but if you included more it would be great. I get both Tulsa and Oklahoma City magazines sent to my house and they were fantastic. Keep it up! 8

Editor’s Note: Thanks for the email Scott. Has the Backyard Bowl lost some of its luster? We don’t think so. In fact it may be ramping up to a new level. The longer Union and Jenks keep winning titles the more this game means to Oklahoma and to those players and coaches. It draws national attention to Oklahoma and that can’t be a bad thing.
Female Athletes Can you tell me why VYPE doesn't ever feature a publication about
softball? I know there will be pictures periodically, but football isn't the only fall sport. You need to take into consideration parents of female athletes. We would like to know about softball teams as well. Female athletes make up a huge population of high school students. Jessica W. Sperry, OK
Editor’s Note: Thanks Jessica. We’re on top of covering softball and other female sports like volleyball and cross-country in the fall.
Native American Athletes VYPE does a Native American Athlete of the Month, but would you consider doing a monthly feature on Native American athletes? So many kids that compete in these games are Native American. I just think you have a unique opportunity to do something other publications don’t do. Thank you for your time and thank you for what you do. VYPE is doing the Native American community a service and we greatly appreciate it. Joseph WhiteEagle

United Way Looks To Raise 24,900,000 in New
The Tulsa Area United Way has officially kicked off its annual campaign and announced a goal of $24,900,000. The kick off and goal announcement were held during halftime of the MidFirst Bank Backyard Bowl, the legendary annual football game between Jenks and Union High Schools, on Friday, Aug. 31, at the University of Tulsa's Chapman Stadium.
Last year, TAUW surpassed its goal of $24,556,573 by $190,310 by raising a total of $24,746,883. More than 1,500 companies and organizations and 50,000 individuals contributed to the 2011 campaign, and United Way officials hope to increase those numbers this year, Graham said.
"Football and the Tulsa Area United Way's annual campaign are two of our community's most beloved fall traditions," said Mark R. Graham, President and CEO. "It was a natural fit to kick off our campaign and announce our goal at the Jenks-Union game."
"The Tulsa Area United Way serves more than 630,000 people
The announcement marked the first time the Tulsa Area United Way has launched its campaign during the popular Jenks-Union game. A large crowd of fans witnessed the announcement.

Joining Graham to make the halftime announcement was Chet Cadieux, president of QuikTrip Corporation, who is serving as the chairman of this year's United Way campaign, and Ed Fariss, president of MidFirst Bank in Tulsa. Students from Jenks and Union High Schools also assisted the United Way in announcing its goal.

It's important for all of us to come together to provide support for our friends and neighbors when they need it. There's no other way for folks to have such a broad impact on their community." The Tulsa Area United Way's 16 Trailblazer companies and organizations - who began their campaigns in support of the United Way earlier this summer and increased the size of their campaigns by at least 10 percent - were recognized at halftime during the game.
The evening also featured the presentation of the Tulsa Area United Way campaign video, produced by Flying Colors of Tulsa.
"We are proud to partner with MidFirst Bank, Union Public Schools and Jenks Public Schools and participate in this popular and exciting event," Graham said.
This year, many contributors to the local United Way campaign will be able to have their donations matched dollar-for-dollar through a variety of challenge grant opportunities, Graham said. In addition, nearly 5,000 volunteers will participate in the Tulsa Area United Way's annual Day of Caring on Friday, Sept. 7, one of the nation's largest single days of community service.
The local United Way campaign will run through Nov. 8. For more information, to get involved or to make a contribution, call 918-583-7171 or visit www.tauw.org. JUNE 2012

Sean Mahan
Football took Sean Mahan around the country and brought him home. Mahan was a member of the famed Legion of Doom defense that started Jenks’ six-year reign in Class 6A from '96 - '01.
A three-year starter on the offensive line, Mahan registered over 100 pancake blocks. He did not allow a sack his junior season. He excelled on defense as well, registering 95 tackles, including 56 tackles for loss and seven sacks to earn AllState and USA Today All-American Honorable Mention honors. In the spring of 1998, Mahan signed with Notre Dame, following in the footsteps of her father, Michael, and sister, Lisa.
Mahan was drafted in the fifth round in 2003 by Tampa Bay to play on the offensive line. He spent 2003-06 with the Buccaneers before being to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2008, he returned to Tampa Bay where he finished his career in 2009. Mahan has moved back to the metro area and with wife Brooke are raising sons Owen, age 4, and Alex, age 1 1/2. VYPE: When did you return to the Tulsa area? Mahan: After my playing days. It was always my plan to retire back here when we were done playing. We moved back to Tulsa a little over a year ago.

smart with my investments and I just decided I didn’t want to play (football) until I couldn’t play with my kids. In 2008, I had a lower back injury that kind of sealed the deal. I had some epidural injections and when it affected my sciatic nerve, I decided it was time to get out. I was always one of the smaller offensive linemen and it was tough to try to stay as bulked up as I could.
VYPE: What are you doing now? Mahan: Right now, I’m enjoying being a Dad. I have some investments that I’m involved in around town that doesn’t take up too much of my time. But I don’t have a 9-5 job per se. I’m just enjoying being around for the kids while they are at this age. They are a lot of fun. VYPE: Do you miss not playing? Mahan: There are certain times I miss it. I miss the locker room and my teammates, getting ready for games and playing the games. There’s a lot that I don’t miss. My body is thanking me every day for retiring.. VYPE: Was there one thing that led you to retire? Mahan: I could have kept playing. I was fortunate enough to make a fair amount of money. I was
VYPE: What is your favorite memory from high school? Mahan: In high school, it was all fun. When you’re winning like we did, it makes everything so much fun. High school is as pure as football can get. It’s not that much of a business-type atmosphere. You are playing for your teammates, for your school pride. We had a lot of great times. Going to the state championship and winning, going undefeated our senior year and being considered one of the top prep teams to ever play in Oklahoma was a huge honor for me. The ’97 season was really special,

everyone bought into the system.
VYPE: Do you have a favorite college memory? Mahan: The first time I walked out the tunnel onto the field. We were playing Michigan. My mom was in the stands. I didn’t play in the game but it was incredible walking out of the tunnel. Also, one year we went to the Fiesta Bowl and to make a BCS game was a big moment. My last year at Notre Dame in 2002, we started the season 8-0 and beat Florida State in Tallahassee. We were ranked in the top 3 or 4 in the country and finished with a 10-win season. VYPE: Favorite memory from your professional career? Mahan: Going to the playoffs twice, once with Tampa, once with Pittsburgh. Unfortunately we lost in the first round. But the atmosphere was a lot of fun. And just everyday getting to play in the NFL was an honor. I feel very fortunate to have been able to play in the NFL and play as long as I did, and exit on my own terms.
VYPE: Do you watch the NFL? Mahan: Oh yeah. I have friends that are still playing. I probably know one or two guys on every team. I stay in contact with them. It’s funny, we will watch games at home and boys can’t understand why I’m not on the television. VYPE: Any hobbies? Mahan: I love to hunt – bird or deer. I still work out,
VYPE: You had tragedy in your family at a young age, did football help you get through the tough times? Mahan: My dad passed when I was 16. Mom passed away my freshman year at Notre Dame. I had adversity no kid should have to go through. It’s part of life. I had a great support team with Brooke, my sister Lisa and my football family at Jenks and Notre Dame. Football was my escape, it gave me something to funnel my energy and leave problems behind. You are around your teammates so much, they become your family. VYPE: What advice would you give to young athletes hoping to make a career in the NFL?
What’s in Your Drinking Water?
Mahan: Pursue your dreams. Be confident you can do it. It’s a matter of putting in a lot of hard work. Odds are not in your favor, there’s a lot of great players out there that don’t make it. You have to have a back-up plan. You can’t put all your eggs in the NFL basket. Make sure you have your education to give you something to fall back on. Once I was drafted, I devoted myself to football. I wanted to make it work. You also have to look at it at the very least I will have a signing bonus. Put money away for the future. I have two degrees from Notre Dame in psychology and computer application. VYPE: Do you follow Jenks football? Mahan: Absolutely. I haven’t been
to any practices yet. I went on the senior retreat at Grand lake and hung out with this year’s seniors away from football. It was a lot of fun.
VYPE: Any chance you will join coach Allan Trimble’s staff? Mahan: He’s asked a couple of times. I definitely want to get out and help out as much as I can. You can look for me to help in the future. But that would be the limit. I don’t want to coach in college or the pros. VYPE: Your thoughts on the Trojans’ season so far? Mahan: They’ve had two really tough games to open the season. Obviously playing Union, it’s a toss-up on who will win. The loser at the game has a pretty high percentage of going on to state championship and winning it. They had a tough break in Texas. They started strong but had some pretty key injuries. I expect them to bounce back. I’m sure they will be in the playoffs this year.

In the Words of My Father....
"We Found Ourselves a Quarterback!" A little insight on the early season for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Coming from an ex-Cowboy, and an ex-Hurricane. I have a rather boisterous father. For those who don’t know, my dad, Lynn, played in the 60’s at OSU. In 1965 he was responsible for a 35-yard catch with just over a minute to go to set up Charlie Durkee's field goal to beat the Oklahoma Sooners 17-16 in Norman.
Growing up we bled orange. As part of the O-Club in Stillwater in the late 1980’s, my father was pretty entrenched in Pat Jones' program. I was the young lad who got to tag along and meet and hang out with some of the greatest Cowboy football players ever. I was bred to play for the Cowboys but when an ACL injury detoured my senior in high school, the full ride that was in Stillwater, quickly evaporated and my destiny was at the University of Tulsa. I wanted to give an example of the kind of person my father was as it pertains to his “Pokes." This all being said, I found myself in a conversation with the ‘ol man after his trip to Arizona in watching his Pokes square off against the Wildcats on September 8th.
Dad is one who is rather optimistic (Funny because those who know me probably know where my overly positive optimism comes from), but I was sure I was going to get the traditional “We played terrible” conversation after the Cowboy loss. However, Dad was more excited than anything. This was a very weird situation because he was thinking the exact same thing I was thinking.
“Well son, we got ourselves a quarterback,” he said. And I was in complete agreement with him. After hashing out the game and after I gave my usual rhetoric on the offensive line play and the front seven aspect (Sorry I can’t help myself because of the O-Lineman that I am), we both came away with the same results. 1. The Cowboys had to play terrible (4 turnovers) and ‘Zone had to play well (0
turnovers) for the Wildcats to win.
2. The unbelievably stubborn and naïve Pac 12 policy on their own referees calling all non-conference home games didn’t necessarily cause the OSU loss, but it didn’t help either (i.e. Wisconsin and Nebraska who all lost on the road in Week 2 against underdog Pac 12 teams with Pac 12 officials). Hey OU fan, you remember this right? Wasn’t there an Oregon game a few years ago that was poorly officiated by a Pac 12 crew in an Oregon-OU contest in Eugene? Anyways, this is another argument for another day. 3. Arizona is much better and as we predicted, are now ranked after Week 2. For those who forgot, Rich Rodriguez is the founder and developer of the great West Virginia program that has now finds themselves perpetually ranked in the top 15. RichRod had a bad spell in Michigan but he is now, once again, in a situation where he will win and win often. 4. Hands down the most important aspect that derived from the Cowboy loss. “We got ourselves a quarterback.” I was fortunate to catch the entire game after watching my Hurricane rightfully dismantle a Tulane bunch earlier in the day. After tweeting with OSU Tulsa World beat writers, I developed dialogue during the game with OSU fans, and I couldn’t help but notice the typical defeatist mentality of the Cowboy Nation.
You see folks, being around the game allows me to look a little deeper (I am not trying to “Big Time” anyone, but just explaining some facts). Let’s put some things into perspective shall we? OSU was not going 12-0 this season. We at VYPE had them at nine wins this year. The Cowboys reload with talent on defense and have found themselves a gem
at quarterback. For the first time we saw a massive display of talent, leadership, command and playmaking ability out of a true freshman in Wes Lunt. The kid can flat-out play. He can literally make every throw that Brandon Austin Chadwick Weeden -F o r m e r T U could make F o ot b a l l A l l(And Weeden American has an NFL -VYPE Publisher arm), and he is already gaining the ability to lead an offense and look rather comfortable in very uncomfortable situations. Yes there were three interceptions, but if you were watching the same game I was watching, you saw only one interception at the fault of Lunt while the freshman was trying to make a play late in the game. The other two picks came off of drops (two of the eight total Cowboy drops on the night).
Lunt set the freshman single game record for yards in a game and from what I saw, that will be the first in a long, long, long list of Cowboy records after this is all said and done.
Strap it on Cowboy fans, this is going to be a long season, but a fun one. Hear this, Lunt will gain more crucial experience this season than any other quarterback in the country. For those who say he is too young and doesn’t need all the pressure to have to win games by himself,, I agree. But understand that Coach Mike Gundy and the Cowboys will need to rely on the frosh because, quite frankly, he is one of the best players on the team right now. He's not "gonna be" one of the best players, he is RIGHT NOW. So serve it up and let the freshman go. I can promise that down the road there will be a national contender in Stillwater that will emerge from this year’s experience.. SEPTEMBER 2012

Small School Football Cascia Hall Prepared for Move to Class 4A
Commandos coach Joe Medina anticipated that private schools eventually may be moved up by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association. So Medina grabbed the reins early, scheduling opponents such as 4A juggernaut Glenpool. “We wanted to be prepared,” Medina said. “We put Glenpool on the schedule in 2010.” The Commandos came away with a 17-0 shutout that first year. Last season, Cascia Hall rolled to a 57-7 victory en route to finished second in Class 3A.
“That was a good a barometer in that we felt like we were going to be fine with this move,” Medina said. “The biggest difference is depth in terms of number of players than you have in 3A. It can become a depth issue as you get later into the season. But football is football. Everything else is the same. Good teams are good teams no matter what class they are.” VYPE Top 100 players Abrm McQuarters, Brett Asher and Tate Swab are leading the charge as Cascia Hall begins a new era.
“The kids have embraced it,” Medina said. “There’s really nothing else they can do but roll with it.”
If any private school should be fine moving up a class, it is Cascia Hall. The Commandos have won three championships in the last five years, one in 2A (2007) and backto-back titles in 3A (200809) and owned a 41-game win streak.
“It’s time to play somebody new,” Medina said. “We look forward to the new travels.” Several players are doubledipping, playing both sides of the ball. Expect to see baseball phenom Bryce Carter (6-2, 215, Jr.) in certain situations at quarterback, giving Swab (5-10, 170, Sr.) a chance to rest.

F E AT U R E “They are two of best athletes that we have had at quarterback in a long time,” Medina said. “They both can run, they both can throw. Bryce is a bigger, more powerful type kid and Tate is lot more elusive.”
McQuarters is one of the top running backs in the state. The 5-10, 180-pound senior rushed for over 200 yards and a touchdown in the Commandos 35-12 win over Holland Hall in Week 1.
“He’s very durable,” Medina said. “I call him my warhorse. We will ride him into battle. He’s as good on offense as he is on defense. We start him at linebacker where he makes great plays for us. He’s really a complete football player. Someone is going to get a diamond in the rough with that one.”
Asher (6-1, 260, Sr.) anchors both the offensive and defensive lines. “Brett isn’t very big but he’s short, squatty and very strong,” Medina said. “He had a sack against Holland Hall and was probably the lead blocker on 70 percent of Abrm’s carries.” Parker A’Neal (6-3, 230, Sr.) has been slowed by injury but should be back by the time the team starts district play.
Medina said the secret to the program’s success is consistency. “We have this program that we built in the sixth grade,” Medina said. “The majority of our players begin in sixth grade with us. The system we run, the drills we run, these seniors will have run that for seven years. That’s a huge advantage. We’ve built a template in terms of how we play.”

Calvert’s Blueprint to Success Transitions to 11-man Josh Calvert’s first experience in 8-man football resulted in a 6-5 season in his first year at Kiefer in 2008. Not bad but as a Steve Edwards disciple, Calvert knew the potential was there for bigger and better. To that end, he devoted a lot of time to the eighth grade class in 2008, who are today’s seniors. “I really got my hooks into those 8th grade players,” Calvert said. “My goal was to make this group by the time they are juniors and seniors to play and represent the school. We’ll play hard, we’ll hit you in the mouth but we will play by the rules.”
It’s no wonder Calvert has adopted a special bond with the 13 seniors on the Trojan roster. It’s doubtful many – if any – of these players will highlight a top recruiting list. Rather, they are players content making a name for Kiefer as evidenced by the 2010 squad that led the state in fewest points allowed with 72. Calvert’s blueprint is a throwback to hard-nose defense.
“We kind of did things in reverse,” Calvert said. “We concentrated on defense in a class (B)
that was known for scoring. We figured if our opponents couldn’t score, we had a better chance of winning.”
“We may not be the biggest guys on defense but we are fast, our kids fly to the football and we will hit you.” Calvert points to the tutelage of defensive coordinator Eric Sneed and eight returning starters on defense as the catalyst for what he hopes is a seamless transition to 11-man football. So far so good. The Trojans blanked Afton 46-0 in Week 1. Topping that list of hard-hitters is VYPE Top 100 player Troy Iverson, who splits time at defensive tackle and defensive end with Heath Brown (6-3, 230, Sr.). “Heath is really disciplined,” the Kiefer coach said. “He also has great hands as one of our receivers.” Calvert calls senior linebacker Carlos Capehart (5-11, 205, Sr.) a “man-child”. Capehart had 144 tackles and 12 sacks in 2011. “His motor is always running and runs only on high,” Calvert said. Daniel Mefford (6-1, 180, Sr.) returns at linebacker where he had 138 tackles a year ago.
Returning starters on offense include quarterback Justin Rovang (6-2, 180, Jr.), who spent the offseason at the Paul Smith Quarterback Academy working on his throwing mechanics.
The running game is strong behind Blake Shadowens (5-7, 175, Sr.), who averaged 7.1 yards per carry a year ago.
Wide receiver Austin Ford (6-1, 175, Sr.) is the total package. Not only did he score a 31 on the ACT but he also runs a high 4.5 in the 40-yard dash and has excellent hands, according to Calvert.
“He has a ton of talent,” Calvert said. “Last year he had surgery on his hand but came to me in the playoffs and said he wanted to play. He got released from the doctors and that week caught five passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.”
Troy Iverson
Small School Football Catoosa Indians Quarterback Austin Potter got the Indians off to a great start after his 358-yard performance in the win against Pryor. Potter threw for three touchdowns and rushed for one in overtime to beat the Tigers, 31-28. Head coach Aaron Meier and the Indians are looking forward to the start of district play on Sept. 21st at home against Wagoner. Verdigris Cardinals
Tanner Smith and the Verdigris Cardinals renewed their hardnosed brand of football. The senior running back had 20 carries for 201 yards and two touchdowns in the, 40-7 win over Stilwell. Ryan Hurd made his presence felt with three punt returns for 56 yards. Hurd’s 18.7 yard average gave the Cardinals some great field position. The Sept. 28th game against Berryhill at home could be for the district title. Cleveland Tigers
Senior quarterback Chas Stallard picked up a big 48-28 win at Hominy in the opening night of the 2012 season.
Austin Potter
Stallard completed 11-of-12 passes for 352 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for one TD. Wide receiver Derek Reeves caught three passes for 170 yards averaging 56.7 yards per catch. He also added two TD’s. Tyler Jones added 120 yards of his own and two touchdowns. The offense was rolling, but the defense played great as well with Josh Ratliff recording 12 tackles and three sacks, while Eric Sheets had two sacks of his own.
Brady Barrett
Andrew Douthit
Wyandotte Bears
Chas Stallard
The Bears feature two of the top players in the class with Andrew Douthit and Brady Barrett. In the opening week Douthit rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns while Barrett added 158 yards and a touchdown of his own. A week two loss to Adair was tough to take, but the Bears are focused on putting it behind them and are striving to win district 2A-8. Summit Christian Eagles
Fort Gibson Tigers He started as a freshman, now as a sophomore J.R. Singleton from Fort Gibson is lighting up the stat book and the scoreboard. The young man accounted for 317 total yards and five touchdowns as he helped the Tigers roll over Tahlequah, 40-20. Ned Adair caught three Singleton passes for 73 yards and scored two touchdowns. Jake Gandara rushed for 90 yards on 14 carries averaging 6.4 yards per carry. Kicker Daniel Mielnik nailed a 32-yard field goal.
Jake Gandara
Head coach Ron Davis has a gem in Colin Crawford. Crawford rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns in week 1. Jared Minix added 63 yards and a touchdown as well. Return specialist Jeremy Pelotte had two returns for 35 yards averaging 17.5 per return giving the offense some good field position. District A-8 is tough with Porter, Afton, Warner and Foyil all looking to take that top spot. Coweta Tigers
Though Coweta is a 5A school, we are putting them in this category as they are a small town and we need to show them some love. The Tigers have started the 2012 season with two victories and look like a true competitor for East Central to deal with in district 5A-4. Week one was all about Hayden Holmes who threw for 299 yards and four touchdowns. Hunter Raspberry caught nine of those passes from Holmes for 153 yards while Jakeem Johnson added 96 yards on the ground. Week two the Tigers went on the road to Carl Albert and picked up a hard-fought 21-19 win. The confidence level is through the roof for the Tigers!

Woolslayer in the passing game are receivers Danny Burke, Luke Preaus and Conner Drake. Burke is averaging over 13 yards per catch.
Defensively the Patriots are led by Hayden Hillenburg at linebacker. Hillenburg is wearing No.55 this season in honor of his fallen friend Donnie Ray Crawford. Hillenburg is joined by Michael Brothers at linebacker while Nick Anderson and Dakota Roush have played big roles on the defense early in the season. nd Place The Lady Rams of Owasso are hammering through the regular season with their eyes on getting another shot at the state title.
Head coach Shane Eicher has consistently put a winner on the field for Owasso, but after last season and being so close to winning their first state title since 1995, the Lady Rams and coach Eicher are not going to accept finishing one game away from being state champs. “Our goal is to win a state championship and we have been very close the past few years,” said coach Eicher. This season the team is off to a great start with big wins over Bixby, Claremore, Enid and Westmoore. During the Broken Arrow tournament the Lady Rams recorded three shut outs and defeated the likes of Edmond North, Hilldale, Adair and the Lady Bruins of Bartlesville.
“On offense we just want them to stay aggressive at the plate. We tell them you get three strikes and to take full advantage of those three swings you get. Don't try to hit a homerun all the time just hit the ball solid and the rest will take care of itself,” said Eicher. Senior Nicole Nease showed during the BA tournament that she has the power to take the ball deep, while other players are adding to the offensive totals. Hannah Stirton, Myranda Stewart, and Devin Hale have heated up at the plate.

The Lady Rams have four pitchers on roster including seniors Shawna Cary and Whitney Whitehorn and sophomores Lauren Jenkins and Jaycee Forth. “We have been playing very solid defense, but most of that is due to the fact we VYPEOK.COM

have two very good pitchers who hit their spots most of the time and that will stop a lot of people from hitting very hard shots at our defense. Plus most of these kids have been playing together for the past few years and it really helps that they will usually know where each other will be,” said Eicher. But the focus is winning “the next game” and if that next game is for the title, coach Eicher and his players know you only get one shot. “First thing is you have to get there and there are quite a few really good teams around here
so it won't be easy. We always tell them not to take anyone for granted. With the tournament being single elimination, you have to take it one game at a time. We have a great group of kids and a lot of seniors who have been to the tournament and it would be nice to see them go out on top, said Eicher. Other players to look for this season include outfielders Rachel Jackson, Carson Dubose, Kenzie Stevens, Katy Taylor, Skylar Compton, Sierra Smith and infielders Emily Bevan, Brooke Curtis, Brittany Garrison, Makayla Waggoner, Rachel Perry and McKenzie Lloyd. Jenks Cross Country and Varsity Cheer Look to Make Noise in State Competitions
Lady Trojans Cross Country Impressing Early With the 2012 cross country season well underway, the Jenks girls have made early statements letting the field know they are here to compete for a state title this season. During the Hurricane Cross Country Festival at the University of Tulsa the Jenks girls competed against runners from schools like Broken Arrow, Beggs, Metro Christian, Lincoln Christian, East Central, Fort Gibson, Victory Christian and many others. With the groups broken up by grade senior Madison Trost placed 4th in that group in the 1-mile event. Juniors Maddie Brown, Rubria Ireland and Marina Alvarado finished 1st, 7th and 8th respectively. The sophomores had one of the best showings with Grace Barber taking top honors followed by Lauren Garrison in 2nd, Rachel Buker in 3rd and Madison Hudspeth in 5th. Next was the 3,200 meters at the Hugh Pierce Chandler Park Run in west Tulsa. Grace Barber finished ahead of the field with a time of 12:16 proving she’s one of the top runners in the state. Coming in third was Maddie Brown with a time of 12:26. Jenks then rounded out the top five as Lauren Garrison and Rachel Buker placed 4th and 5th. Maddie Trost placed 8th at 13:08 while Maddie Hudspeth and Marina Alvarado finished 12th and 20th. Overall this could be one of the best girls cross country teams Jenks has fielded in quite some time. Look for this group to continue pushing those times and bringing home the hardware.
