DOENGES DRIVEN ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Brayden Mayhew - Bartlesville Football

Brayden Mayhew is heading into his senior year at Bartlesville, and Mayhew is aiming to make this season his best on the gridiron. Mayhew has been working tremendously hard this summer, not only to better himself, but to better his team as well. Mayhew’s teammates give him the necessary drive needed to succeed on the football field. “My team and my coaches get me motivated,” Mayhew said. “I work hard for them.” Mayhew, alongside fellow wide receiver AJ Archambo, is looking to be a leader for the Bruins in 2016, both vocally and physically. Mayhew said he hopes to score plenty of touchdowns this season. As a team, Mayhew said the Bruins are aiming to make it further than they did last season. To do so, the Bruins will have to continue improving as the season moves along. It is often said that games are won and players are made in the offseason. It’s in the offseason when players develop the winning mindset as they are faced with difficult challenges. Throughout the course of the summer, Mayhew and his teammates learned this first hand. They endured grueling workouts in the heat, as most football players do. But Mayhew is already on his way to setting the tone for the Bruins with his mindset. “It’s only making me and my team better,” Mayhew said. Mayhew is dedicated to making himself a better football player. In doing so, Mayhew makes the team as a whole better. Mayhew’s mindset is easy to pass along, and many of his Bruin teammates have adopted his ‘always improving’ mindset. Mayhew only plays football at

Bartlesville and he said he loves the atmosphere of it all. Outside of school and football, Mayhew enjoys spending time with his family and his second family at Xtreme Fitness where he works out. For his dedication to the game of football, drive to improve himself as a player and support of his teammates, Brayden Mayhew is the Doenges Driven Athlete of the Month. AUGUST 2016

Northeastern Oklahoma A&M

It’s a new day for the Golden Norsemen

Northeastern A&M has a new head coach in Clay Patterson and a mostly new team, with some 66 true freshmen, redshirts and walk-ons joining 54 returning players from last year’s team that finished 4-5 under Ryan Held. “The first week is a lot of shock-and-awe for most of the freshmen,” Patterson said. “Guys that came in maybe a little out of shape, not knowing what to expect, it can be a little overwhelming.”

About 155 prospects in all attended NEO’s four-week summer camp in July, and Patterson sees reason for optimism in 2016.

“We’ve got a lot of kids that have come in and are hungry to win by getting what they want out of this summer process,” Patterson told the Miami News Record. “With the effort from the kids that have shown up, I think our talent level has improved both on the freshman and sophomore levels. “Thus far, we’ve already had some freshmen come in and show that they are ready to compete at this level,” Patterson said. “That’s what we were really looking for, along with seeing some sophomores from our spring workouts really step up and mature.” Patterson comes to NEO from Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where in three seasons he helped TVCC win five Southwest Junior College Football Conference championships (three conference, two conference playoffs) and two Heart of Texas Bowl Game championships.

With Patterson as offensive coordinator, the Cardinals broke the all-time record for yards per game at any level of college football with 656.1 yards per game, among other records. In 23 of Trinity’s 35 games with Patterson calling plays, they scored 50 points (including a 52-13 victory over NEO that ended the Norse season). They topped 60 points 13 times and exceeded 70 points eight times. Expect more prolific offense at NEO, though Patterson says he hasn’t exactly identified a quarterback yet. “We’ve got a couple of guys on campus that I think could start for us, but we’ve got to improve our execution,” Patterson said. “The hurry-up pace takes some getting used to. … We’ve also got to get more consistent at our wide receiver positions. Stretching the field vertically in the up-tempo offense is huge and right now we’ve just got to get better at getting down field.

“Another area where we’ve got to get better is at linebacker,” Patterson said. “Here again, our execution has got to improve.”

THE SCOOP: Brock Martin missed nearly half of the 2015 season due to injury, yet he still finished in the top five in the state for sacks with 17. Martin is a ferocious pass rushing defensive end who has started to receive offers from Power 5 schools such as Baylor and Texas Tech.

THE SCOOP: Casey Base returns to his spot under center for the Mustangs in 2016. Base had an impressive junior year, throwing for more than 3,000 yards and 30 TD’s. Base will be the leader on offense for Oologah next season. Base set the school record for the discus throw in 2016, proving his arm strength might be his best asset.

THE SCOOP: AJ Archambo emerged as a premier playmaker for the Bruins in 2015. The wide receiver quickly became quarterback Colton Penrod’s favorite target. Archambo’s 1,031 receiving yards led the team, and gave fans a peek at his potential. Archambo also plays basketball and baseball for Bartlesville, and was on VYPE’s Top 50 baseball players list.

THE SCOOP: Shae Garner emerged as an every-down threat for the Bulldogs last season. Garner can run the ball, catch passes, return punts, return kickoffs and even throw a pass every now and then. Garner averaged nearly 100 all-purpose yards per game last season. Garner’s production will see a boost in 2016, as he takes on a bigger role on both offense and defense.

THE SCOOP: Michael Lansaw will be the anchor in the trenches for the Tigers in 2016. Pryor coach Jeramy Branchcomb said he’s never had a player practice harder than Lansaw. Lansaw’s intensity in practice sets the tone for the rest of his teammates. Lansaw can expect to see playing time on both sides of the ball. The Tigers will benefit from his leadership and contagious work ethic.

THE SCOOP: Jaren Dirtseller will be the key playmaker for the Pirate offense in 2016. Last season, Dirtseller ran for more than 800 yards in a pass-happy offense. His workload on the offensive side of the ball will increase this season. Dirtseller also plays linebacker, and will be a vocal leader for the Pirate defense in 2016.

THE SCOOP: BJ Bradbury, who made the Top 100 last season, quarterbacked the Warriors to a Class 2A state title in 2015. Bradbury is a true dual-threat quarterback, whose rushing and passing numbers are equally as impressive. Although he missed time with an injury, Bradbury totaled nearly 3,000 total yards and 54 total touchdowns in 2015.

QB – Casey Base, Oologah – Base threw for more than 3,000 yards last season, and is poised to lead the Mustangs to the Class 4A title game. Base has the tools to be one of the best quarterbacks in the entire state. RB – Chris Ibarra, Commerce – Ibarra, who will only be a sophomore, had a monster freshman year, running for more than 1,000 yards. Ibarra is expected to up those numbers as a sophomore. Expect big things from this Tiger. WR – AJ Archambo, Bartlesville – Archambo is the Bruins’ best player heading into this season. Archambo was one of the top wide receivers in the state last year, and that shouldn’t change this year.

OL – Will Bates, Locust Grove – Bates will be a four-year starter at center for coach Matt Hennesy. Bates is a true leader, and is mentally tough. Bates was a member of the USA U19 team that competed at the

BJ Bradbury

World Championships in China.

DL – Gus Espinosa, Claremore – Espinosa is the anchor of the Zebra defensive line. The 6-foot-4, 210 pound end finished last season with 99 tackles and six sacks. Keep an eye on this senior.

LB – Christian Campbell, Pryor – Campbell could be one of the most underrated players out there. Campbell recorded 111 tackles last season, and is the heart and soul of the Tiger defense. DB – BJ Bradbury, Adair – Bradbury has close to 20 interceptions in his career at Adair. Bradbury, who is also a standout quarterback, aims to lead the Warriors to consecutive Class 2A state titles.

E Northeast Oklahoma offered readers the chance to select the ite VYPENEOK.com that totaled more than 109,000 votes. Take …the Fans’ Choice or the lineup chosen by NEOK editor Cal Ross. ur thoughts @CalvinScottRoss or @vypeok QB – Hunter Hines, Caney Valley – Hines is a fine choice for this spot. Hines, a dual threat quarterback, threw for more than 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. Hines can make the Trojans a dangerous team in 2A.

RB – Jaren Dirtseller, Locust Grove – Dirtseller, a Top 100 selection, made it on my team at linebacker, but he is a solid running back as well. Dirtseller ran for nearly 1,000 yards last season in a pass-happy offense. His production should skyrocket on offense.

WR – Brandon Fogle, Caney Valley – The Trojan faithful showed up to the polls, and their efforts paid off. Fogle is a quick receiver with great hands. Fogle will have a bigger role on offense this season, and his numbers will show it. OL – Jakob Barnes, Nowata – The fans and I agree here. I have Barnes on my team as well because he is a tremendous blocker. Barnes has

Jakob Barnes

great size, and should get some college attention this season. Barnes is also a talented defensive lineman.

DL – Brock Martin, Oologah – The fans and I are on the same page here as well. Martin, in my opinion, is the best player in the NEOK region and one of the best players in the state. Martin is poised to have a record setting season if he stays healthy. LB – Brady Kropp, Claremore – Kropp is a great selection, and I put him on my team as well. Kropp recorded an impressive 112 tackles last season and is the heart of the Zebra defense.

DB – Shae Garner, Skiatook – The fans must be reading my mind. Garner recorded nearly 100 tackles and five interceptions last season, earning him a VYPE Top 100 selection. Garner is also a talented return man.

Quick Hits: Bartlesville is coming off its first ever 10 win season. College High and Sooner High merged to form one high school in 1982.

The Bruins enter 2016 with an eight game winning streak at Custer Stadium. Wide receiver A.J. Archambo caught two touchdown passes in a 3514 first round playoff win over Midwest City. Archambo totaled 15 touchdown receptions in all for 2015. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 10-2 2014 - 5-6 2013 - 5-5 2012 – 6-4 2011 – 3-7

The Bartlesville Bruins are coming off one of their best seasons in school history. The Bruins went 10-2 in 2015, with playmakers all over the field on both sides of the ball. Coming into 2016, coach John McKee will be replacing most of his key playmakers, but that has not dulled his excitement. “I’m extremely excited about the upcoming year with a new group ready to carve their own mark,” McKee said.

VYPE Top 100 wide receiver AJ Archambo (6-4, 195, Sr.) broke onto the scene last season, catching 58 passes for 1,035 yards and 15 touchdowns. Archambo is the key playmaker for the Bruins this season. Up front, Joe Fodor (6-0, 240, Sr.) brings leadership to a young offensive line. Fodor is the most experienced lineman for the Bruins. Ryan Haney (6-2, 250, So.) will have a chance to make a big impact on the line. With Jarron Hilger graduated, DeAndre Young (5-9, 205, So.) will be the Bruin tailback. The young back has a chance to make a big impact for the Bruin offense. Brayden Mayhew (5-7, 160, Sr.) will be another receiver threat, alongside Archambo, for whoever ends up winning the quarterback job. The Bruins will run a spread offense that features multiple formations. McKee likes to run a balanced attack, and he plans to do just that this season. DEFENSE

The Bruins will run a 4-2-5 base defense this season. McKee said the Bruins will a fast, attacking defense. The Bruins are rock solid on the front seven. The defensive line has a nice blend of pass rushing and run stopping abilities.

DeAndre Williams (6-1, 200, Sr.) will rush the passer from his defensive end position. Wil-

AJ Archambo liams’ quickness of the edge will be a valuable asset for the Bruin defense. Dominic Godinez (5-10, 260, Jr.) and Noah Bass (6-0, 220, Sr.) will plug the middle as the defensive tackles. The Bruins’ run defense starts with these two in the middle. Jaumon Okyere (6-3, 205, Sr.) will be one of the vocal leaders for the defense. Okyere will need to initiate the attack for this defense. Easton Hammonds (5-9, 175, Sr.) joins Okyere in the linebacker corp. Hammonds is a quick linebacker with solid hitting power. The Bruins will need his speed consistently throughout the year. The Bruins have a tough schedule in 2016. Due to that fact, the Bruin defense will be asked to step up as the young offense finds its groove. The Bruins face McAlester, Owasso and Cascia Hall in their non-district games. Those three opponents will be great tests for the Bruins. The Bruins only have two home games in district play, adding to the difficulty of their schedule. The Bruins go to Bixby and Booker T., arguably the two best teams in their district. Look for the Bartlesville defense to grow up quickly.

Captains Q&A: Bartlesville Football Bartlesville football players AJ Archambo, Joe Fodor, Joe Lard and Angel Higareda spoke with VYPE Editor Cal Ross about the upcoming season and what to expect from the Bruins on the gridiron in 2016.

but someone who really stood out to me is junior offensive lineman Pablo Mercado. From winter offseason to now, his work ethic has been incredible and he’s got the gains to show for it.

VYPE: Knowing all the hard work you guys put in throughout the summer, how do you feel heading into the season?

Lard: Matt Simpson has always had great work ethic and always shows a positive attitude.

Archambo: We feel really great about this season. We have been putting in the work and we are seeing the real leaders stand out. Fodor: I feel pretty confident we’ll do well. All summer we’ve been doing all we can to be bigger, faster and stronger this season to prove we can keep that momentum we had going last year. Lard: I’m feeling very confident. I’m excited to see if it pays off. Higareda: The whole team has been working very hard all summer and I think we’re capable of doing some great things this year. VYPE: Which one of your teammates has impressed you with their work ethic and attitude this summer? Archambo: Brayden Mayhew has been at workouts almost every day and has grown as a leader of this team. Fodor: It’s hard to choose just one, 12

Higareda: Defensive lineman DeAndre Williams has been working his heart out and you can just tell he wants to win. VYPE: Is there one game on the schedule that you have circled on your calendar? Archambo: Every game is circled for me because there is nothing like Friday night lights, but the game that stands out is the Owasso game. They have a great defense and some talented players. Should be a good game for us. Fodor: Bixby. It really left a sour taste in my mouth after our second round playoff game. Lard: Definitely Bixby. I’m anxious to avenge last year’s loss in the playoffs. Higareda: Bixby is going to be another big game coming into this season. VYPE: What would you consider is your biggest strength as a football

player? Archambo: My biggest strength is the mental part of the game and my hands. Fodor: My biggest strength is probably my attitude. It’s so easy to get down quick in this game but you have to keep your head up if you want to pull through. Lard: I would consider my biggest strength to be my work ethic. I’ve put a lot of time in this offseason. Higareda: I think my biggest strength is using my head and being able to read the offense. VYPE: Is there anybody you would like to thank or give a shout out to? Archambo: I want to thank Coach Andrew Rice for making me come out and play football last year. Also, I want to thank coach Justin Gordon and coach Smith for always pushing me on and off the field. Fodor: I’d like to thank my parents. They’ve always been encouraging me to try new things and taught me to love what you do. Lard: A big shout out to coach Jeremy Smith and the GBs. Higareda: I’d just like to thank the coaches for giving us all the tools they can to prepare us for this upcoming season.

OFFENSE After a tough season in 2015, the Bulldoggers are bringing in a new head coach. Tyler Caid takes over the Dewey program with hopes of turning them around. Caid will also serve as the Bulldoggers’ defensive coordinator. With seven offensive starters returning, Dewey’s fast tempo offense will be quickly implemented. Running back Hunter Brewer (5-11, 185, Sr.) is the big dog in the Dewey offense. Brewer had a stellar season in 2015, rushing for 1,041 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. Brewer averaged 115 yards per game on the ground. The Bulldoggers have plenty of other playmakers returning as well. Jonathon Blackmon (6-0, 175, Sr.) is an experienced receiver who will be a big target for Dewey’s quarterback, Blake Timmons (5-10, 185, Jr.). Timmons started for Dewey as a sophomore, and he has a high ceiling in 2016. Jacob Stevenson (6-3, 265, Sr.) will be the anchor on the offensive line at his guard position. Brandon Phelps (5-10, 175, Sr.) can line up at running back or wide receiver, making him a dangerous playmaker. Caston Frye (6-1, 175, Jr.)

DEWEY BULLDOGGERS

OFFENSE Cory James is replacing Matt Hagebusch after Hagebusch took the Sequoyah Claremore job. James inherits an offense that returns five starters at key positions, including quarterback Cody Smith (6-1, 170, Sr.). Smith threw for 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns, while rushing for 560 yards. Running back Tarrell Collins (6-0, 205, Sr.) will be the feature back, after rushing for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns. TJ Donaldson (5-10, 180, So.) and Bryce Hewitt (5-9, 160, Jr.) will share carries behind Collins. Xavier Mathis (6-3, 150, Jr.) brings height to the receiver position. Jakob Barnes (6-4, 300, Sr.) is the leader in the trenches. Barnes recorded 20 pancakes last season. Outside of Barnes, the offensive line will feature four new players. Barnes will need to set the example physically.

NOWATA IRONMEN

adds much needed height to the receivers group. Overall, this group should be much improved from last season, and should take a big bite out of Class 3A.

DEFENSE Eight starters return to the Bulldogger defense in 2016. In a district with high scoring offenses, this unit will need to play much better this season. Blackmon is the key player on defense in coach Caid’s 4-3 scheme. Blackmon plays corner, and will need to hold receivers in check. Opposite of Blackmon at the other corner is Colby Williams (6-0, 165, Jr.). Williams and Blackmon complement each other well with their similar skill sets at cornerback. Cole Hawkins (5-9, 155, Sr.) joins Brewer in the back end of the secondary. Brewer recorded 52 tackles and two interceptions last year. Brandon Phelps (5-10, 175, Sr.) will captain the defense from his linebacker position. Phelps finished with 72 tackles, two sacks and an interception in 2015. Kyler Hancock (6-1, 230, Sr.) will put pressure on opposing quarterbacks from his defensive end spot. Expect a variety of blitz packages from this attacking Bulldogger defense.

DEFENSE The Ironmen defense will be young in the trenches, but experienced in the secondary. Most of their offensive playmakers are their key defensive playmakers as well. Collins is the leader of the defense, and in 2015 he recorded 87 tackles and 10 sacks. Smith is an impact player from his cornerback position. Smith finished 2015 with 52 tackles, five interceptions and two touchdowns. Barnes, like on offense, is the most experienced player in the trenches for Nowata. Barnes made 61 tackles and five sacks last season. Donaldson and Mathis are important defensive players as well. Mathis is the free safety and last line of defense, while Donaldson is a key linebacker next to Collins. Jacob Robinson (6-0, 280, Sr.) adds depth to the defensive line.

CANEY VALLEY TROJANS OFFENSE Stephen Mitchell will take over as head coach at Caney Valley next season. Eight starters return to his offense. Leading the way for the Trojans in 2016 will be quarterback Hunter Hines (6-0, 205, Sr.). Hines had a stellar junior season, throwing for more than 2,000 yards and more than 20 touchdowns. Hines is a true leader, and makes his teammates better. Cooper Eden (6-2, 175, Sr.) will be Hines’ main target through the air. Eden caught eight touchdowns and led the state in kickoff return yardage last season. Brandon Fogle (5-8, 155, Jr.) will be another threat at wide receiver. Fogle broke onto the scene as a sophomore. Christian Ballew (6-5, 240, Jr.) will make the switch to tight end this season, but he can play offensive line as well. Zac Foster (5-7, 180, Jr.) will

OFFENSE Pawhuska will be under new leadership this year as Joe Tillman takes over as the head coach of the Huskies. Tillman and new offensive coordinator Ladd Drummond will have the Huskies operating out of a Spread offense this year. Colton Hindman (5-11, 170, Sr.) will likely be the team’s starting quarterback this year but don’t be surprised to see Tyler Wilson (6-0, 185, Jr.) in that spot either. The Huskies will also have a litter of running backs to rely on this year as well. Caleb Bruce (5-10, 160, Sr.), Warren Graves (5-10, 170, Sr.) and Brian Jeffers (6-0, 185, Jr.) make up a Hydralike monster in the backfield. Even with all of those skill players the biggest difference maker in the Pawhuska offense may be one of the big men doing the dirty work on the offensive line. John Bighorse

PAWHUSKA HUSKIES

play center and coach Mitchell is expecting a big year from him.

DEFENSE “You fight for me, I will fight for you,” Mitchell said. This will be the mantra for the Trojan defense in 2016. This defense sees six starters return to the field, and they will fight until the end. Connor Stuart (6-0, 265, Sr.) will be the leader of the defense. Stuart had more than 65 tackles last year and is always looking to lay a big hit. Bryar Isam (6-0, 205, Sr.) joins Stuart at linebacker. Isam is coming off a broken collarbone and is looking to have a big year. AJ Young (5-7, 160, Sr.) will start at cornerback after having a solid season. Seth Lambert (5-10, 210, Sr.) came up with many key stops from the defensive line last year. Zane Calvert (5-8, 141, Jr.) will play outside linebacker. Calvert has a great combination of speed and quickness.

(6-1, 240, Sr.) will need to be on the top of his game in the trenches in order to allow Pawhuska’s skill players to do what they do best.

DEFENSE All of the players listed above in the offensive section will all likely see time on the defensive side of the ball. Bighorse will play defensive line and linebacker, Bruce will play linebacker and Graves will line up both at linebacker and safety. Hindman, Wilson and Jeffers will all also get time in the secondary this year. Other key players on the Pawhuska defense this year will be defensive lineman Keenan Cheeves (6-1, 220, Jr.), linebacker ben Gray (6-1, 180, Sr.) and defensive back Nathan Richardson (6-1, 180, Sr.).

DeCrane is a tremendous hitter, but can play multiple positions in the field as well. DeCrane finds motivation in her family, friends and God. DeCrane said those close to her want to see her succeed, and the least she can do for them is to give everything she has every chance she gets. 4A-3 Coach: RON CULWELL Enrollment: 665

Schedule: Sept. 2 – vs. Claremore Sequoyah Sept. 9 – vs. Jay Sept. 16 – at Stilwell Sept. 23 – at Catoosa Sept. 30 – at Vinita Oct. 7 – vs. Oologah Oct. 13 – vs. McLain Oct. 20 – at Wagoner Oct. 28 – vs. Cascia Hall Nov. 4 – at Miami

Quick Hits: After waiting patiently for nine years as an assistant, Ron Culwell is the new head coach for the Ridgerunners. Culwell led Concordia, Kansas to the 1999 Class 4A state championship beating Holton 42-21. Grove and Jay have played every year since 1948. The Ridgerunners are currently on a two-game winning streak, including a 39-34 decision last year. Dating back to 1984 the series is split right down the middle at 16 wins a piece. The Ridgerunners host Sequoyah-Claremore to open the season on September 2nd. It’s the first meeting between the schools since 1999 when Grove scored a 14-6 win. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 5-4 2014 - 3-7 2013 - 2-8 2012 - 1-9 2011 – 4-6

GROVE RIDGERUNNERS OFFENSE Grove football is entering a new era with new head coach Ron Culwell. Culwell spent last year as Grove’s offensive coordinator, and this will be his 10th year total at Grove. The Ridgerunners will compete in Class 4A this season, after going 5-4 in Class 5A in 2015. Under Culwell’s direction, the Ridgerunners have been developing depth on both sides of the ball. “We’re going to get strong in the summer in order to build depth,” Culwell said. “We want to build confidence in our kids.” Five starters return to the Grove offense in 2016. Dillan Miller (6-1, 170, Sr.) will lead the way for Grove’s offense. Miller is a wide receiver that caught 36 passes for roughly 500 yards last season. Brady Phillips (6-0, 170, Sr.) joins Miller in the wide receiver group. Phillips is a track star with great speed down the field. Up front, the Ridgerunners return three starters, making it the most experienced unit. Caleb Jones (6-1, 230, Jr.), Mason Russ (6-3, 250, Sr.) and Skylar Hernandez (6-2, 205, Jr.) bring that experience and necessary tenacity to the offensive line. Jones will play guard, Russ will play tackle and Hernandez will be the center.

DEFENSE The Grove defense will need to be solid while some of the younger talent on offense develops. Fortunately, the Ridgerunners have six starters returning to the lineup. Miller and Phillips are the two big names on this side of the ball as well. Miller plays strong safety, while Phillips plays free safety. Their play in the

Brady Phillips back end of the secondary will be key. In the front seven, Grove has multiple talented players. Dalton Cash (6-1, 180, So.) made a big impact as a freshman, and he will be asked to accept a bigger role this season. On the defensive line, Scott Rawson (6-2, 290, Sr.) will play defensive tackle. Rawson will be a gap stuffer, and his play against the run will be key. Dawson Tanner (6-1, 205, So.) and Matt Amos (6-2, 205) will lineup at the defensive end spots. These two will need to make big plays in the pass game.

Grove’s new football coach Ron Culwell spoke highly of his team’s work ethic this summer, but one athlete stood out to him: Mason Russ. Russ is an offensive lineman, and proved to coach Culwell that he wants to cultivate a winning culture at Grove. Russ said his personal goals for this season are to earn all-district honors. As a team, Russ aims to lead the Ridgerunners to a district title. The district title has been on Russ’ mind all summer. Russ said coach Culwell has the team focused and Russ believes guys are jumping on board. Russ is also a member of the Grove track team, where he throws shotput and discus, but Russ said football is his favorite sport. “I like the physical nature of football,” Russ said. “It separates the men from the boys.” Russ would love nothing more than to bring the Ridgerunners back to the playoffs. That desire motivates Russ to attack each day and work tremendously hard to get better. With Oologah and Wagoner in the district, Grove has a tough road, but Russ has the correct mindset. Russ’ dad has been the biggest influence in his athletic life. Russ said his dad has always pushed him to be a better athlete and put him in a position to be the best he possibly can be. Outside of school and sports, Russ can be found spending time with his friends and family. For his love of the game of football, and his passion for the Grove program, Mason Russ is the Grove Athlete of the Month.

Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. VYPE celebrates achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.” to help her succeed not only in school and sports, but in life as well.

“One of the best parts about being a student athlete at Grove is that we’re extremely well taken care of by the coaches,” Redus said. “They are determined to turn us into good young adults and athletes.”

Blaise Redus Grove Softball

Blaise Redus is entering her sophomore year at Grove, but she is already learning what it takes to compete as a student-athlete at a school like Grove. Redus understands and appreciates the work that her coaches and teachers do

Redus said that the teachers go the extra mile to help all athletes in school if they miss a day or two. Redus also said she loves to represent Grove while she plays softball, a sport that she loves.

Coming into the season, Redus said she is focusing on improving her batting average. As a team, Redus aims to lead her team to the state tournament. Redus and her teammates believe they have what it takes to make it this season. Redus always strives to get better each day she takes the field, but a sibling rivalry

helps motivate her as well. Redus said her parents have been the biggest influence in her athletic career because they are always there to cheer her and her sister on. Redus has learned a lot about life from the game of softball, and Redus cherishes the sport because of that. “My favorite part about being a softball player is the things the sport has allowed me to do and the things it has taught me,” Redus said. “I’ve gotten to travel to different states to play this sport and met many new friends along the way.”

For her dedication to softball, drive to improve herself on and off the field and her willingness to help her team, Blaise Redus is the Character Counts Athlete of the Month.

Vinita has simply owned the series taking 15 of the last 16 contests. The Hornets won last year 70-12. Vinita’s finish of 5-5 in 2015 was the best result since 2010. VINITA HORNETS OFFENSE Six starters return to Mike Christy’s offense in 2016. The Hornets run out of the Wing-T offense, which requires multiple running backs and a quarterback who can move. Leading the sting for the Hornet offense is dynamic running back Alex Kauffman (6-1, 185, Sr.). Kauffman ran for 909 yards in 2015, averaging close to 11 yards per carry. Kauffman finished the season with eight rushing touchdowns. Parker Childers (5-7, 140, Sr.) shares the load with Kauffman at running back. Last season, Childers averaged 6.2 yards per carry. Mobile quarterback Parker Ward (5-10, 165, Jr.) has the ability to hurt defenses off of play action. Ward threw for 628 yards and eight touchdowns last season. It’s impossible to have a dynamic running game without a tough offensive line, and Vinita will look to Colten McDaniel (5-10, 240, Sr.) to set the tone up front. John Michael Floyd (5-11, 230, Jr.) will be a player to watch at tight end. Floyd’s ability to both block and catch

passes makes him a dangerous threat in this offense. Floyd might end up being Ward’s favorite target by the end of the season. With an incredibly tough schedule, Vinita will look to be playing its best football come playoff time. DEFENSE The Hornets have a swarming defense that will see seven starters return in 2016. Kauffman will lead the swarm from his linebacker position. Kauffman made 43 total tackles last season, along with two forced fumbles. Elliot Keene (6-1, 155, Jr.) plays in the secondary at free safety. Keene made 20 total tackles and broke up four passes. Floyd, like Kauffman, will be a major impact player on both sides of the ball. Floyd made 23 total tackles and scored a touchdown. Kyle Davis (5-8, 135, Sr.) plays cornerback, and opposing receivers can have a hard time getting open against him. Davis broke up four passes and made 26 total tackles. Childers will join Floyd and Kauffman in the linebacker corps. Childers recorded 36 total tackles, two sacks and three pass breakups last season. The Hornet linebackers will bring the big hits in 2016.

Vinita Player Spotlight brought to you by

Allstate Alex Kauffman - Vinita Football Alex Kauffman, who is entering his senior season as a Hornet, is a three-sport athlete at Vinita. Last year, Kauffman ran for nearly 1,000 yards on the football field, won the state title in his weight on the wrestling mat and competed on the Vinita track team. Heading into 2016, Kauffman is aiming to outdo himself and make a statement. Kauffman said people often overlook him and his abilities, but that won’t be the case this season. Kauffman is going to force people to listen, and he wants to make sure nobody overlooks the Hornets. Kauffman’s goal for the team this season is to play and lead as a team, and hopefully that will result

in a playoff appearance. Kauffman strives to be the best he can possibly be; no matter what sport he is playing. Kauffman draws motivation from this desire, and it helps him become a better athlete. That’s not the only place Kauffman draws motivation from though. “Jesus is my motivation,” Kauffman said. “Without Him, I would have no greater purpose.” Kauffman’s church and his faith have been big influences in his life and have helped him reach the point he is at today. Those two parts of Kauffman’s life have completely changed his outlook and approach to day-to-day life. They have helped Kauffman become the best he can be, and Kauffman is ready to show

that he and the Hornets are a force to be reckoned with. “You have to better yourself in order to better your team,” Kauffman said. “I believe that I will soon make my statement as soon as the first scrimmage happens. People will find out that the Vinita Hornets are a force to be reckoned with, and that I am no pushover.” For his passion for Christ, dedication to Vinita athletics and production on the field, mat and track, Alex Kauffman is the Vinita Athlete of the Month.

Quick Hits: Miami and Grove once again find themselves in the same district. The two schools have played every year since 1986. Grove won last year 21-20 but Miami holds the overall edge 17-13 since the series has been unbroken. The Wardogs have posted only five winning seasons in the past twenty years.

After a two year hiatus, Miami and Pryor will resume a long standing rivalry. Miami won the last time out in 2013 by a count of 32-20 and held a 10-6 edge over the Tigers from 1998-2013. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 3-7, 2014 - 4-6, 2013 - 3-7, 2012 - 0-10, 2011 – 4-6 Coach: STEVE MOSS Enrollment: 220

AUGUST 2016

OFFENSE The Wardogs return a large senior class to the gridiron in 2016. Leading the way for the Wardogs is senior quarterback Kameron Jinks. Jinks threw for nearly 800 yards and seven touchdowns in his time under center last season. Outside of Jinks, there are quite a few positions that need to be occupied. Coach James Cheatham believes his veteran players will put the younger guys in the right position to succeed. “We have a strong senior class of leaders and we expect a lot from them in helping teach younger players their roles,” Cheatham said. “We need to stay healthy and improve weekly as we progress through the season.” Up front, the Wardogs have experienced players ready to defend Jinks. Daniel Allen, Trey Engelbrecht and Keshon Witham are all three senior linemen, ready for the challenge. Junior lineman Jacob Paxson will also find his way into the rotation. Cheatham has a collection of valuable weapons for Jinks to take advantage of. Michael Horn will be the Wardog running back. Horn’s carries will provide a valuable spark to the offense. Caden Collins is a playmaking wide receiver who can offers great hands. Junior receiver Tristen Bunce is another threat out wide for Jinks to find. Sophomores Destry Allen and Tasi Peter will need to pick up the speed of the game quickly to add depth to the Wardog offensive line. Overall, this Wardog offense has a chance to grow and become a big threat to the division. DEFENSE The Wardogs will run a 4-2-5 defense that is predicated on stopping the run. Cheatham plans on

OFFENSE Steve Moss took a young Tiger to team to the playoffs in 2015. Heading into 2016, the Tigers are much more experienced, especially on the offensive line, and posses dynamic running backs. Chris Ibarra (5-9, 190, So.) solidified himself as the main back during his freshman season after running for 1,191 yards and 12 touchdowns. However, Ibarra isn’t the only impact running back. Chandler Wilson (5-10, 150, Sr.) ran for 637 yards and five touchdowns last season. Fullback Ryan Dunbar (6-1, 195, So.) doesn’t just block, as his 330 rushing yards will tell. Up front, the Tigers return all their starters, making it their most experienced unit. Donnie Brown (6-0, 315, Sr.) will anchor the offensive line, but keep an eye out for Kasey Karnes (5-10, 205, Sr.) and Brent Reeves (5-11, 260, Sr.).

COMMERCE TIGERS

the Wildcat offense in 2016. Coach Rick Couch wants to see the Wildcats be more open on offense this season. The Wildcats will run out of the I-formation.

DEFENSE Six starters return to a defense that struggled last season. However, Couch believes the Wildcats “will be much better

showing multiple looks in order to pressure opposing offenses. The Wardogs have some game changing players in the front seven, which will allow the secondary to make plays. Allen and Witham are just as valuable on the defensive line as they are on offense. These two can make a major impact for the Wardog front seven. Justus French will play outside linebacker for the Wardogs, giving their linebacker unit some speed. Horn, and sophomores Jake Cordell and Brevin Randle, will rotate in with French at linebacker, adding some depth to the position. Trevor Sourjohn will play a major role in the Wardog secondary. The Wardogs will be in a hurry to get their young players acclimated to the speed of the varsity game because when district play arrives, they will need as much help as they can get. With Oologah, Wagoner and Cascia Hall in its district, Miami will need as many players as they can to compete. Coach Cheatham and the rest of the Wardogs are excited for the season and ready to take the challenge.

Kameron Jinks

DEFENSE Moss likes to run the multiple defensive set, allowing him to switch to different types of defenses at any time. “Our defense can be in a 5-2, 4-4, 4-3 or 3-4 at any give time,” Moss said. “Multiple defenses are much harder to prepare for and block correctly when the game comes.” Most, if not all, of Commerce’s players are two-way impact players. Brown plugs up the middle from the nose guard position. Ibarra and Dunbar are impact linebackers, alongside Stefan Blakenship (6-0, 160, Sr.) and Zaine Cheater (5-10, 200, Jr.). Karnes, Reeves and Kaleb Damann (6-5, 190, Sr.) are all athletic defensive linemen who can impact the game in multiple ways.

Wil Amos transferred to Afton last winter, and immediately made an impact on Afton’s boys track team. Amos won a silver medal in the 400m dash, and a gold medal in the 800m run at last year’s state track meet. Amos was a member of the 4x800 relay team that won a gold medal as well. Amos was the leading force behind the Eagles’ fifth place finish at the state track meet last year. Amos has tremendous speed and quickness. Combine those two assets with his athleticism, and he has the ability to play almost any sport. Amos will start at quarterback for Afton in the fall, and he will give the Eagles a huge boost. Amos has a solid arm, but his ability to make plays outside of the pocket makes him a dynamic football player. Amos will also be a standout on Afton’s basketball team, after starting for Grove last year before he transferred. Amos is a good student, who works hard in the classroom to maintain his grades. Outside of school and sports, Amos is involved in the Afton community. For all of his efforts on the field, and contributions to Afton, Wil Amos is the Athlete of the Month.

Senior Daylee Osburn is preparing for her final season as an Afton Eagle. After being selected to the all conference softball and basketball teams as a sophomore, Osburn went and posted a .356 batting average and 24 stolen bases her junior season. Those numbers were good enough to earn Osburn another all conference team selection. Osburn qualified for the state meet in the 100 meter dash as a freshman and sophomore, with her best finish being a fourth place finish. At last year’s state meet, Osburn outdid herself, and earned a silver medal in the 100.

In the classroom, Osburn is equally as impressive. Osburn is ranked No. 1 in her class with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Osburn earned all A’s in her classes last year, with only one grade below a 95 percent. Osburn is aiming to continue that consistency in the classroom. Outside of school and sports, Osburn is involved in the FCA and STUCO, among other activities. For all of her hard work in the classroom, and dedication to Afton athletics, Daylee Osburn is the Athlete of the Month.

Brannon is the anchor of that group. Seth Chapman (5-6, 185, Sr.) will carry the load for the Wildcat offense. Gunner Johnson (6-0, 175, Jr.) will be the Wildcats’ signal caller in 2016. Josh Baker (5-4, 160, Jr.) backs up Chapman at running back. Brace Welch (5-10, 170, Jr.) and Trenton Seigel (5-10, 180, Jr.) will be weapons in the passing game. DEFENSE Chapman is a key piece to the Wildcat defense, which has seven starters returning. Chapman will be a leader in the secondary. Brannon and Jake Davis (5-8, 170, Jr.) are the impact defensive linemen. Johnson will bark out the calls from his linebacker spot. Johnson is a solid tackler with big play potential. Seigel and Welch add depth to the

secondary and both will make a major impact on the defensive side of the football. OFFENSE The Eagles return nearly all of their key skill players from last season, including athletic quarterback Wil Amos (6-3, 175, Jr.). Amos has the ability to run with the football, but is a solid passer as well. Amos moved to Afton last year after starting for Grove. Amos will hand the ball to Gunner Hudson (5-10, 175, Sr.) on running plays. Hudson is a talented running back who can beat teams multiple ways. Briar Julian (6-1, 185, Jr.), Gabe Mustain (5-11, 170, Sr.) and Brett Hollon (5-7, 140, Jr.) make up Amos’ receiving corps. All three have unique skill sets. Trever Pendergraft

(6-1, 240, So.) will anchor the offensive line unit.

DEFENSE The Eagle defense will flock to the ball and aim to cause havoc. Seth Miller (6-1, 250, Jr.) and Zach Henry (5-8, 220, Jr.) will initiate the havoc from their linebacker spots. Clay Mitchell (5-10, 160, Jr.) will guard the key receivers and playmakers of Afton’s opponents. Kyle Corley (5-10, 165, Jr.) and Jacob Barton (6-0, 180, Jr.) both play defensive end and will be tasked with putting pressure on the quarterback. Corley and Barton’s pressure will help force turnovers and stop the running game. OFFENSE Last year, the Owls found themselves in the second round of the playoffs.

In 2016, the Owls will focus on building the program and a team mentality. Kody Benton (5-10, 185, Sr.) is back at quarterback for coach Kent Marshall after gaining 1,221 allpurpose yards with 14 touchdowns. Dalton McGranahan (6-4, 310, Sr.) is a monster up front, and will anchor the offensive line. KJ Ferris (6-0, 190, Sr.) and Jose Garcia (5-9, 175, Jr.) will be Benton’s big targets in the receiving game, and coach Marshall expects them to have big seasons. The Owl offense must replace a lot of production in both the running and passing game from last season. DEFENSE The Owl defense, much like the offense, has a lot of young players who will need to contribute early and often. McGranahan, Ferris and Garcia will all play big roles on the defensive side of the ball. Grant Harden (6-1, 210, So.) started on the defensive line as a freshman, and he will assume a bigger role in 2016. Dustin Reynolds (5-9, 175, So.) also started as a freshman, but he started in the secondary. Westin Allen (6-0, 185, Sr.) is expected to have a solid season for coach Marshall at safety. Jarrett Cornett is a two-sport athlete at Inola. Cornett plays football and wrestles for the Longhorns, and he is aiming to make his senior season his best yet. Football is Cornett’s favorite sport, as he has played it since he was in the first grade. Heading into 2016, Cornett has high hopes not only for himself, but for his team as well. “My main focus is to destroy any opponent we play,” Cornett said. “Then I want to make a run in the playoffs at the end of the season.” Cornett plays running back and outside linebacker for the Longhorns, and he is a two-way impact player. Cornett is a shifty back, and a great tackler on defense. Cornett works hard to be the best, and he said that being the best motivates him every day. “You must always play like you are trying to prove something and you’ve always got to want to win more than your opponent,” Cornett said. Cornett said he wants to be remembered as the guy who constantly gave it his all when he took the field. Cornett’s biggest influence in his playing career has been Inola football coach Jeff Williams. Coach Williams constantly pushes his players to be the best that they can be. Outside of school and sports, Cornett enjoys archery hunting and being involved with his church. Cornett has also spent time working as a coach for the Special Olympics, and Cornett said he loves to spend as much time as he can with those kids. For all of his hard work on the field, and his willingness to always get better off the field, Jarrett Cornett is the Athlete of the Month.

CLAREMORE

ZEBRAS Coach: JARRETT HURT Enrollment: 1,307

Schedule: Sept. 2 – at East Central Sept. 9 – vs. Rogers (Ark.) Sept. 16 – at Edison Sept. 23 – vs. Hale Sept. 30 – at Memorial Oct. 7 – vs. Bishop Kelley Oct. 14 – at Tahlequah Oct. 20 – vs. Skiatook Oct. 28 – at Collinsville Nov. 4 – vs. Pryor

Quick Hits: The Zebras return to the 5A level after two seasons in Class 6A-II. Claremore won only one game against 6A competition during that span, 37-21 over Sapulpa in 2014.

Claremore will face Rogers, Arkansas again this season and carry a two-game winning streak in the series. The Mountaineers are coming off a 1-10 effort in 2015 and will be led by a familiar face in 2016. Mike Loyd has come over from Grove to take the head coaching position at Rogers. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 2-8 2014 - 2-8 2013 - 7-4 2012 - 10-2 2011 – 4-6

VERDIGRIS CARDINALS

Coach: TRAVIS EAST Enrollment: 367 Last 5 Years: 22015 - 5-6 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 2-8 2012 - 10-2 2011- 10-2 OFFENSE Travis East takes over a Verdigris football team that sees six offensive starters returning to the starting lineup. Hunter Hutchison (6-0, 295, Sr.) is the key player of that group, after he rushed for 1,472 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior. Threeyear starter Blaine Saxon (6-2, 275, Sr.) will anchor the offensive line. Coach East expects Saxon and the rest of his line to create room for the playmakers. Nathan Stiedley (6-3, 195, Jr.) brings experience to the quarterback spot. Stiedley threw for 1,098 yards and 14 touchdowns as a sophomore. Stiedley should be much improved after an offseason of work, and the coaching staff is expecting him to perform well. Dylan Hight (5-8, 180, Jr.) and Peyton Cox (6-2, 195, Jr.) will both serve as running back-wide receiver hybrids. Hight finished with 565 rushing yards,

OFFENSE Jarrett Hurt, who was Claremore’s defensive coordinator for the past eight seasons, was promoted to head coach in the offseason. Hurt has six players returning to his offense in 2016, including three senior offensive linemen. The Zebras, behind an experienced line, will have the ability to effectively throw and run the ball this season. Keegan Hisey (6-0, 180, Sr.) brings a solid balance of speed and power to the Zebra backfield. Hisey ran for 649 yards and five touchdowns last season. Hisey’s numbers should see a significant boost this season as he takes on a more prominent role. Under center for Claremore will be Aaron McCollough (6-0, 185, Sr.). McCollough threw for 396 yards and seven touchdowns last year in limited action. Much like Hisey, McCollough’s stats should see a significant increase in 2016. McCollough’s protection, however, will determine his success. Fortunately for him, he has a lot of experience returning up front. Lane Hembree (6-1, 240, Sr.), Brock Johnston (6-1, 300, Sr.), Hunter Nixon (5-10, 230, Sr.) and Coby Williams (5-10, 250, Jr.) all have significant varsity experience and will make a major impact for the Zebras. These guys can bulldoze opponents in the run game, and form a brick wall in pass protection. With the Zebras stepping back into Class 5A, their schedule is much more favorable. Still, the Zebras will have to play Collinsville, Skiatook and Memorial, which is no easy task. Expect the Zebras to play much better on offense in 2016.

377 receiving yards and 14 total touchdowns in 2015. Cox gained 173 rushing yards and a scored a touchdown. Expect this offense to be balanced and spread the ball around efficiently to its playmakers. DEFENSE East, along with being the head coach, will be the defensive coordinator for the Cardinals as well. This unit returns five starters, and is looking to build off the momentum of the second half of last year. Hight is the heart of the Cardinal defense, gathering 95 tackles last season and 291 tackles in his career. Saxon anchors the defensive line as well. Saxon finished the 2015 season with 77 tackles, five sacks and six tackles for loss. Cox joins Hight at the linebacker spot, after he gathered 81 tackles and a sack last season. Tyler Beeler (5-10, 240, Jr.) had a productive sophomore season at defensive tackle. Beeler recorded 20 tackles and five sacks. Stone Shew (5-11, 180, Jr.) is the key player in the secondary for East’s defense. East runs the 4-2-5 defense, and is focused on disrupting opposing offenses. Creating turnovers will be a big part of the defensive game plan for Verdigris, and they will be vital to the Cardinals’ success. Schedule: Aug. 26 – at Jay

Lane Hembree DEFENSE The Zebra defense returns six starters in 2016, just like its offensive counterpart. The front seven is loaded with experienced playmakers, especially at linebacker. Brady Kropp (6-2, 215, Sr.) is the heart and soul of the defense. Kropp has 211 tackles in his career, after gathering 112 alone last season. Austin Short (6-0, 185, Sr.) joins Kropp at linebacker. Short came on strong last season, recording 61 tackles. The Zebras have two defensive ends that relentlessly rush the passer. Gus Espinosa (6-4, 210, Sr.) is the anchor on the line. Espinosa recorded 99 tackles last season, to go along with his six sacks. Mickey Bywaters (6-2, 210, Jr.) will hold down the other defensive end spot. Bywaters made a monster impact as a sophomore in 2015, recording 54 tackles and three sacks. In the defensive backfield, the Zebras have a couple of talented players. Ben Jones (6-3, 200, Jr.) snagged three interceptions and recorded 61 tackles from his defensive back position. Jones made big leaps as a sophomore and is expected to continue his development. Johnathan Cox (6-0, 175, Sr.) will join Jones in the secondary, adding much needed depth. The Zebras have a chance to put together a solid season under their new head coach. Expect to see a revitalized football team in Claremore.

OFFENSE New coach Jon Eddy takes over a struggling Foyil program with high hopes of turning it around. Eddy said the Panthers will look to utilize the growth of their young offensive line to help their balanced attack. Running back Trey Hinton (6-0, 175, Sr.) will set the offensive tone for Foyil. Hinton is a talented athlete who can get it done in a variety of ways. Quarterback Austin Morrow (6-1, 170, Sr.) will look to exploit defenses in the play action. Matt Bolton (5-9, 180, Jr.) and Bryce

Whitaker (6-0, 170, Sr.) will garner some carries alongside Hinton. Mason Webb (6-2, 240, Jr.) will lead the big boys up front. David Maupin (5-11, 165, Sr.) will be Morrow’s key receiving threat.

DEFENSE Eight starters return to a Panther defense that will look to be a gap control, run-stopping defense. Hinton is the impact player on defense, and he is a safety-linebacker hybrid player. Webb is a monster defensive end with tremendous rush capabilities. Morrow and Gus Spence (6-1, 220, So.) join the linebacker ranks alongside Hinton. Maupin will be key against the opponents’ passing attack. Caden Miller (6-0, 160, So.) plays free safety and will be a major factor in Foyil’s defense against the pass. Quick Hits: The Mustangs enter a season coming off back to back state championship game appearances for the third time in school history. Oologah won back to back championships in 1997 and 1998 and finished runner-up twice in 1989 and 90.

Both of Oologah’s championship losses came to Wagoner. The Mustangs have just one win on the field against the Bulldogs in their last 11 meetings and ultimately had to forfeit the one win in 2014 due to an ineligible player. Oologah and Skiatook meet Friday September 9th. It’s the seventh consecutive year the two teams have played and man have those games been close. Skiatook has won the last two in a row. OOLOGAH MUSTANGS OFFENSE The Mustangs finished the 2015 season as the Class 4A runner-ups, after a tough 15-14 loss to Wagoner in the finals. Coming into 2016, Mustang coach Brandon Craig returns nearly all of his impact players. On offense, five starters return, including veteran quarterback and VYPE Top 100 player Casey Base (6-1, 210, Sr.). Base had a terrific junior season, throwing for 3,009 yards and 31 touchdowns. Base has an advanced knowledge of the offense, and is a field general. Protecting Base up front is Blaize Schrader (6-0, 285, Sr.) and Chase Vance (6-2, 265, Jr.), two strong, experienced linemen. Base’s key receiver is Drake Barnes (6-1, 175, Sr.), who caught 15 balls for 438 yards and three touchdowns last season. Expect Barnes’ numbers to skyrocket this season, as he becomes the main target. The Mustangs will have two running backs split carries. Gunter Pearson (6-0, 210, Jr.) and Hunter Gibson (6-3, 205, Sr.) both had productive seasons in 2015. Pearson ran for 479 yards on 72 carries with four touchdowns, while Gibson carried the ball 57 times for 354 yards and four touchdowns. This offense has a chance to be deadly. DEFENSE While the Oologah offense is lethal, the Mustang defense will be the strong point. Eight starters return to the defense, including VYPE Top 100 player Brock Martin (6-3, 225, Sr.). Martin is a

physical football player, and his 16 sacks last year are evidence of that. Martin only played nine games in 2015, and recorded 96 tackles, nine tackles for loss and five forced fumbles. Martin has a chance to have a monster senior season. Pearson holds down the middle at linebacker, recording a stunning 173 tackles and 20 tackles for loss in 2015. Strong safety Rush O’Connor (60, 170, Sr.) will be key for the Oologah secondary. O’Connor recorded 121 tackles and two interceptions last season. Chance Deitz (6-0, 205, Jr.) recorded nine sacks and 106 tackles as a junior. Clayton Downum (5-11, 185, Sr.) joins Pearson and Gibson at linebacker. Downum recorded 72 tackles and four sacks last year, while Gibson recorded 50 tackles and three interceptions. This defense has playmakers all over the field, which will be important in a tough district.

SEQUOYAH CLAREMORE EAGLES

Coach: MATT HAGEBUSCH Enrollment: 436

OFFENSE Matt Hagebusch is entering first year at the helm of the Eagles after a successful stint at Nowata. Hagebusch is focused on returning Sequoyah to prominence. “We have some really special skill players that have the opportunity to make big plays from anywhere on the field,” Hagebusch said. “Our kids and coaches are working their tails off to get back to the winning tradition that Sequoyah is used to.” Six starters return from last year, including playmaking quarterback Tristan Diaz (5-10, 185, Jr.). Diaz threw for 836 yards and five touchdowns last season, and will look to expand on those numbers under Hagebusch. Miguel Fulgencio (6-1, 195, Jr.), Johnny Pryor (5-9, 175, Sr.) and Nathan Stritzke (511, 175, Jr.) will all make a major impact at running back. All three will have a chance to make big plays. Collin Tucker (6-2, 205, Jr.) will be responsible for catching passes and making impactful blocks from his tight end position. Reese Robinette (6-0, 260, Sr.) will be the anchor on the offensive line. The development of the line will be key.

DEFENSE The Eagle defense sees seven starters return to the field in 2016. Linebacker Jace Wilhite (5-10, 210, Jr.) will lead the flock, after recording 115 tackles last season. Wesley Hinds (5-8, 180, Sr.) will join Wilhite at linebacker. Hinds has the ability to cover a lot of

Tristan Diaz ground, especially from sideline-to-sideline. Defensive ends Brayden Armstrong (6-1, 190, Jr.) and Baylor Bedsworth (6-0, 220, Jr.) both had tremendous sophomore seasons, recording seven sacks each. Both will need to expand on those performances if the Eagle defense wants to be at its best. Diaz will roam the secondary from the free safety position. Diaz will be the line last line of the Eagle defense. Fulgencio rounds out the linebacker corps, and adds depth to that unit. Hagebusch believes this will be a tremendous season for the Eagles if their development continues on its current path. “If we can come together and get comfortable in a new offensive and defensive system, then this could be a great year,” Hagebusch said.

OFFENSE Outside of their loss to Locust Grove early in the season, and a close 36-35 win against Davis in the playoffs; the Warriors were virtually untouchable on their way to the Class 2A state championship. Coach Mark Lippe returns most of his key playmakers from that team. VYPE Top 100 player and quarterback BJ Bradbury (6-2, 185, Sr.) is the key returnee.

Bradbury’s career starts are eye popping. In his career, Bradbury has 6,586 passing yards, 97 passing touchdowns, 2,229 rushing yards and 43 rushing touchdowns. Bradbury is looking to add to his growing legacy in 2016. Joining Bradbury is a group of talented playmakers. Bo Rogers (5-10, 165, Sr.) and Austin Hines (5-6, 165, Sr.) will be Bradbury’s main targets in the pass attack. Brandon Roeder (6-2, 205, Sr.) and Trevor Brachtenbach (59, 160, Sr.) will split time at running back. Brachtenbach ran for 657 yards and six touchdowns last year. DEFENSE Five starters return to the Warrior defense. Bradbury is also a key player on this side of the ball, as his 18 career interceptions will tell you. Heath Kerr (6-1, 215, Sr.) will be an impact linebacker for the Warriors. Kerr has recorded 205 tackles in his career at Adair. Nick King (5-11, 245, Sr.) and Bryce McCutcheon (5-10, 225, Sr.) are the anchors on the defensive line. King recorded 14 tackles for loss in 2015, while McCutcheon has 133 tackles in his career. Zeke Lappe (5-11, 180, Sr.) joins Kerr at linebacker. Lappe will be one of the outside linebackers. The Warrior defense will need to be sharp if they are going to repeat as 2A champions.

OFFENSE Jeramy Branchcomb is entering his second season at the helm of the Pryor football team. With seven starters returning to the offensive side of the ball, Branchcomb will use a run heavy offense with multiple formations. In any run heavy offense, a solid offensive line is needed. Branchcomb has a few great ones up front. VYPE Top 100 player Michael Lansaw (6-2, 245, Sr.) is the anchor of that group at right tackle. Nevin Henson (6-1, 265, Jr.) joins Lansaw on the right side of the line. Pryor will run behind these guys quite a bit. Chandler Olsen (5-10, 170, Sr.) will be the Tigers’ signal caller in 2016. Olsen will have a deep group of wide receivers at his disposal. Gaige Mendivil (6-1, 170, Sr.) will be the leader of the wide receiver group. Austin Lafave (5-10, 190, Sr.) is

Pryor qualified for the playoffs last year for the fourth time in seven seasons. The Tigers made the post season just four times from 1991 through 2008.

Michael Lansaw another target for Olsen to find on passing downs. Lafave has strong hands and doesn’t drop many passes. Rounding out the wide receiver group is Nathen Engles (6-1, 200, Sr.). Engles, like Lafave, has strong hands, but his ability to break tackles after the catch will be a huge threat. Austin Martin returns to his offensive coordinator spot on Branchcomb’s staff. Branchcomb and the rest of his coaches believe this Pryor team can be great. “I’m very excited about the season,” Branchcomb said. “If we put in the work in the spring and summer, the sky is the limit.” DEFENSE The Tiger defense will be the strength of this team in 2016. With nine starters returning, and a strong senior

class, the Tigers will be able to switch between a 4-4 and 3-4 defense. More importantly, the Tigers are returning their impact linebacker. Christian Campbell (6-0, 210, Sr.) recorded 111 tackles last season as a junior. Campbell is the vocal leader, and the heart of the Pryor defense. However, he is not the only impact player the Tiger defense possesses. Logan Baker (6-2, 235, Sr.) is a big time pass rusher at defensive end. Baker is the anchor on the defensive line. Will Considine (6-2, 205, Jr.) played a solid role as a sophomore, and this season, he will be a big time playmaker from his safety position. Trent Bryan (5-11, 180, Jr.) and Daniel Chase (6-0, 190, Sr.) join Campbell at linebacker, making Pryor’s linebacker corps a force to be reckoned with. Chase recorded four sacks last season. Dawson Fleak (510, 180, Sr.) is a versatile player who will hold down multiple spots in the Pryor secondary. The Tigers are in a tough district with teams like Collinsville and Skiatook, plus their biggest rival Claremore is moving down to Class 5A.

SALINA WILDCATS OFFENSE Coach Matt Williams enters his eighth season with the Wildcats and roles into the 2016 season with three returning starters on the offensive side of the ball. Salina will have a stacked offensive line working out of the spread formation. Jake Sitsler is a force to be reckoned with at 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds. The junior should help the Wildcats offense become more balanced as the season progresses. He’ll be joined by Korban Budder (5-10, 200, Jr.), Levi Cole (511, 230, Sr.) and Michael Shea (5-11, 200, Jr.) as the four will bring stability up front. Senior quarterback Bret LoCoco (6-1, 180) will look towards sophomore receiver Caleb Bowline (5-7, 145) to open up the field.

CHOUTEAU-MAZIE WILDCATS OFFENSE The Wildcats return eight starters along the offensive side of the ball this season and it is the “skilled” positions that have drawn the attention of coach Mike Inglett. Justin Searcy (6-0, 160, Sr.) and Zac Primeaux (6-1, 160, Sr.) will look to keep defenses honest from their spots at wide receiver. Working out of the multiple one back formation the play of senior Korbin Hershberger (5-8, 145) will be key for the Wildcats success. He’ll rely upon blocking from Justin Chupp (6-0, 230, Sr.) at tight end along with fullback Tyler McMahan (6-1, 225, Jr.) who brings good size to the position and is an excellent leader for this team.

OFFENSE Former collegiate assistant coach Steve Patterson begins his third season with the Comets with a squad that will be young and inexperienced in some positions. The experience that returns will be counted upon to lead and help lead the program in the direction coach Patterson expects. One player that has been a force in doing so is Kade Moore (6-4, 300, Sr.) who is a force on the field and a leader in the locker room and throughout the school serving as class president. Moore will be joined on the offensive line by Jarren Yeager (6-1, 220, Sr.) and Dustin Campbell (6-1, 270, Jr.). Those three will look to spring sophomore running back Hunter Sapp (5-8, 175) which should allow receiver Colton Capps (6-2, 180, Sr.) to be a factor out of the Wing T offense.

KANSAS COMETS

DEFENSE Defensively working out of the 3-5 formation coach Williams expects a lot out of his linebacking corp. In the defensive backfield, Jesse Tramel (5-7, 160, Jr.) will be the focal point of offenses Williams understands his team will be very young with a number of underclassmen seeing playing time and that shines through with three sophomores in Heath Stewart (6-0, 185), Ruston Williams (6-0, 180) and Bobby Goins (6-0, 195) expected to fill starting roles at linebacker. They’ll benefit in having upperclassmen Mikah Lowrimore (6-0, 185, Jr.) and Corban Moore (5-8, 190, Sr.) at the position as well.

DEFENSE The Wildcats will see Don Cochran assume the defensive coordinator duties this season as seven starters are back from last year’s squad. The linebacker position is nailed down for the most part with Joe Quigley (5-11, 185, Sr.), McMahan and Chupp all slotted for starter roles. Chupp will man the middle of the defense, the impact he’ll provide this year will depend on the play of sophomore Blayton Starr (5-10, 180) at nose guard. Another sophomore at one defensive end spot to keep an eye on this season is Tyler Applegate (5-10, 185). The sophomore duo should set the tone along the defensive line for the Wildcats after a 3-7 season last year.

DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Capps will look to lockdown one side of the field at the cornerback spot while Sapp should slow the other side out of the 4-3 formation. Up front Yeager will go from stopping sacks as an offensive lineman to trying to create havoc in the backfield from the defensive end spot. He’ll be joined along the line by sophomore Zack Lamont (5-10, 250) who should continue to grow within the defense. Daris Glass (5-7, 170, So.) is another young player to keep an eye on at the safety position. Despite some inexperienced, young players coach Patterson has good reason to be looking forward to this fall.

OFFENSE “The Pirate Attack,” as Locust Grove coach Matt Hennesy calls his offense, loses a couple of record-setting players, but Hennesy does not expect the production to fall off. “Our offense will go fast and wear down defenses by snapping the ball every 10 seconds,” Hennesy said. “Look for the offense to have a more established running game.” The key player in this year’s version of the Pirate Attack is VYPE Top 100 player Jaren Dirtseller (6-1, 225, Sr.). Dirtseller is a powerful running back who rushed the ball 99 times for 806 yards and 13 touchdowns. Dirtseller is also a great pass catcher, as his 29 receptions, 365 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns indicate. Clearing a path for Dirtseller will be two veteran linemen, Will Bates (6-1 278, Sr.) and Jaxon Overstreet (6-0, 275, Sr.). Bates is a fouryear starter on the offensive line, and Overstreet is a three-year starter. The Pirates’ new quarterback Darryle Trammell (5-11, 206, Sr.) will have two playmakers two throw to, outside of Dirtseller. Bryce Remer (5-11, 185, Jr.) caught 40 passes for 720 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, while deep threat Jacob Harris (6-2, 170, Sr.) used his speed to gather 26 receptions for 548 yards and 10 touchdowns. This offense should not skip a beat when they take the field in August.

LOCUST GROVE PIRATES

DEFENSE Eight starters return to this side of the ball for Hennesy. While, many key playmakers graduated, there are still big time players returning. Dirtseller is also

Jaren Dirtseller the impact player on this side of the ball from his outside linebacker position. Dirtseller recorded 91 tackles and four sacks last year. Caleb Gibson (6-1, 185, Sr.) will provide great experience at linebacker next to Dirtseller. Gibson finished with 63 tackles and three sacks in 2015. Matt Williams (6-1, 185, Jr.) will move to inside linebacker after recording 96 tackles and seven sacks last season. Kye Carlile (5-11, 212, Sr.) is an athletic, strong defensive lineman who recorded 50 tackles last year. Remer plays corner, and is a talented defender. Bates will make his presence known on the defensive line. This year’s Locust Grove defense will focus on creating takeaways and limiting big plays.
