Woodward Jumping to 5A

After spending the last few years in Class 4A the Woodward Boomers are moving to 5A this year. Both the boys and girls teams have players in the VYPE Top 100 in Garrett Owen and ORU commit Hillary Hurst which should help ease the transition for both squads. Overall head girls coach Kinzie Didier said her team is excited and optimistic about the move.

“We are looking forward to facing different opponents come postseason play. We know we will have to make some adjustments as far as speed and pressure on both ends of the floor,” Didier said. “We feel as if we get better throughout the course of the regular season we can make a splash in the postseason. Getting to Tulsa is the goal, but we must gain momentum through the journey of the regular season.” Two Grand

Seiling Wildcats senior Bowan Nyberg has been a prolific scorer his entire high school career. Currently he sits at 1,487 points in his career which is more than impressive. Things could get even more special if

Hillary Hurst Woodward Nyberg plays in 25 games as he did last year and averages 21 points per game he will crack 2,000 points for his career and join some really rarified air. Last year Nyberg averaged 18.2 points per game so 21 a game is well in his wheelhouse.

Five so Fine Five Games You Need to See in Northwest Oklahoma • Forgan Bulldogs at Arnett Wildcats Jan. 15 These two teams have battled for Class B supremacy for seemingly the entire decade. If you want to see a war where both teams leave it all on the floor then this one is for you. Both teams have highly talented players so this should be a fun one. • Piedmont Lady Wildcats at Carl Albert Lady Titans Jan. 29 This game may be happening in Midwest City but it still features one of the best girls teams in northwest Oklahoma in Piedmont. The Lady Cats are for real but so are the Lady Titans. Could also have serious playoff implications. • Pond Creek-Hunter Panthers at Seiling Wildcats Jan. 30 Two of the best scorers in Class A go toe-to-toe in this one. Cole Jones from Pond Creek can flat out light it up but Bowan Nyberg is the most prolific scorer in Seiling history and can go for 30 on any given night. For fans that like an up-tempo battle with tons of points this is a must see. • Woodward Lady Boomers at Alva Lady Bugs Feb. 2 Honestly this will be a great game

on both the girls and boys sides of things but let’s stick to the ladies for now. Alva may have the best girls player in the state in Jaden Hobbs but Woodward counters with ORU commit Hillary Hurst a player who can put up points in bunches. You want fireworks. You got it. • Okarche Lady Warriors at Cashion Lady Wildcats Feb. 9 Okarche is one of the top teams in Class A. Cashion one of the top teams in Class 2A. These teams hooked up twice last year and split the series, neither game was decided by more than eight points so expect a great contest with this one. Player to Watch Cesar Ordonez – Forgan Bulldogs Sophomore Ordonez didn’t put up huge numbers last season as a freshman but Todd Kerr has made a habit of improving players and getting them ready to step up into bigger roles as they progress through the program. Seniors Dee Alston and Cody Matthews are going to be the big stat guys for the Bulldogs but for Forgan to get to the top of

Bailey Vogt Okarche Class B Ordonez is going to need to step up. If you can make it out to the Jan. 15 matchup between the Bulldogs and the Arnett Wildcats keep an eye on this sophomore.

TEAM OF THE MONTH

Trading in Their Silver for Gold The Chisholm Lady Longhorns finished as the Class 3A runner-ups last year but this year they are eying the top prize After a magical postseason run that capped a stellar regular season the 2014-2015 version of the Chisholm Lady Longhorns walked away with the silver ball after a 55-38 loss to Sequoyah Tahlequah in the championship game.

VYPE

OAKWOOD MALL

Last season the Lady Longhorns finished the regular season 19-5 with two losses to Class 2A champion Alva, two losses to 2A semifinalist Fairview and a loss to 4A state qualifier Harrah. Three of those losses came in the Lady Longhorns first eight games of the year, as the team finished it’s final 16 regular season games with a 14-2 record. In the postseason Chisholm took down Newkirk in the district tournament then beat perennial powers Heritage Hall and Perkins in regionals before defeating Millwood in the area championship game. At the state tournament Chisholm knocked off Vian in the first round by a score of 52-36 then beat Washington in the semifinals 51-47, before their loss to Sequoyah in the finals.

Bailey Brown

This year the Lady Longhorns bring back four starters led by senior center and Southwestern Oklahoma State commit Nicole Middleton, who averaged eight points, four rebounds and four blocks per game last year. Senior point guard Kammi Gruber is also back this year after averaging eight points and four rebounds per game a year ago. Juniors Bailey Brown and Kaylee Petersen will also be back in the starting lineup this year at the two forward spots. Last season Brown averaged 13 point and six rebounds per game while Petersen chipped in 11 points and six boards per game. Rounding out Chisholm’s rotation this year will be senior Alaina West, junior Jordan Rolfe and sophomores Lauren Ball and Mackinzie Simmons.

Rebecca Wasson leaned on heavily to be her team’s leader in the frontcourt, counted on to carry the majority of the load for her team night in and night out.

VYPE ranked Kremlin-Hillsdale No. 10 in the preseason rankings for Class A girls and if Wasson plays to her potential and the Lady Broncs can stay healthy, something they weren’t able to do last year, fans could easily find Kremlin-Hillsdale in the state tournament field come March.

After high school Wasson hopes to continue her basketball or track career in college and study nursing or something else in the healthcare field.

Wasson Setting Goals High This Year Kremlin-Hillsdale star Rebecca Wasson is always a sure bet to fill up the stat sheet but this year she wants to do more, she wants to lead her team to the Big House

Coming off a sophomore campaign in which she averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and four steals per game it’s easy to see Rebecca Wasson is bound for big things this year. She was selected to VYPE’s second team preseason All-VYPE list for class A.

Wasson’s coach Tana Turney describes the junior playmaker as a “very versatile player who can dominate around the goal, get to the rim off the dribble, and shoot the three outside. She makes a lot happen for her teammates with just her presence on the floor.”

If you ask Wasson, her goal isn’t about individual accolades or honors it’s about where she wants her team to be at the end of the season. “I just really want to go to the state tournament. Our team always has made the area tournament but we have just come up short. This year I want to make it to state and win it all,” Wasson said. Wasson knows a thing or two about winning after earning a Class A state championship in the long jump last spring with a mark of 17-03. Now as she sets her sights on a gold ball on the hardwood Wasson will be

CHARACTER COUNTS ATHLETE OF THE MONTH SMITH HOPES TO LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY INSIDE THE PLAINSMEN PROGRAM

Enid’s Deion Smith Ready for Primetime As a senior for the Enid Plainsmen basketball team, Deion Smith will be counted on to shoulder a big chunk of the leadership duties this year but it is a role his coach Kyle Hilterbran thinks Smith is ready for. “He’s a senior who has played solid minutes and has varsity experience. We hope he can lead us as a point guard and distribute the ball for our team,” Hilterbran said. Off the floor Smith hopes to impact Enid’s underclassmen by showing them a good example and letting them know the value of hard work and dedication to their game. “One thing I would really like to leave with the younger guys is that no matter how tough or how easy it seems you have to always go as hard as you can,” Smith said.

That attitude of going 100 percent all the time also permeates Smith’s goals for the team this season. “I want us to play to our potential every game, not just good enough to win,” Smith said. Along with being someone the basketball team will count on heavily this season Smith was also a standout on the gridiron; and away from athletics Smith is highly involved with other activities at Enid High. He is a member of the Connection Crew, a group that helps freshmen adjust to high school. Smith is also a part of BHU, an organization at Enid that helps get students to college and prepare for life as a college student.

As for his future plans, after high school Smith hopes to continue his basketball career in college and major in Electrical Engineering.

NOC ENID MEN Coach: Greg Shamburg

Assistant Coaches: Connor Brooks, Ryan Wilkinson

Greg Shamburg’s NOC Enid basketball team finished the 2014-15 season with a record of 19-10. They will start the season with a whole new roster. With just three sophomores and only one that played significant time, the Jets will try to reload this season. A roster that includes six international athletes, two transfers and size at every position, this team will play more physical brand of basketball. The Jets have two Faith Seven All-Stars in Cade Upshaw and Ty Lazenby. Ty was also picked for the Super 5 team. Chris Jefferson, a red-shirt freshman, should provide some leadership and athleticism on the floor. The Jets also have a new member on its staff, Connor Brooks, a former player who finished his career at Stephen F. Austin. You can find the Jets schedule and roster at www.noc.ed/mensbasketball3.

NOC ENID WOMEN Coach: Scott Morris

Assistant Coach: Rose Anderson

The NOC Enid women’s basketball team has

established a high level of expectation in their tradition-rich program. The first 14 seasons have produced 10 NJCAA All-Americans, 41 Academic All-Americans, three NJCAA National championships, and finished 4th in the NJCAA National Tournament in 2011. Although this team finished second in the conference, the early exit from the Region 2 tournament has led Scott Morris to reload with that he feels is his most talented freshman class his program has seen. In addition to returning starters Gabbie Parsons, Cordell; and Alexis Hill, Byng; the Lady Jets have added freshman standouts Dossou Ndiaye, Senegal; and Rylie Torrey, Locust Grove. Torrey was named Tulsa World Player of the Year, 4A State Tournament MVP and won the Wendy’s High School Heisman award. They are joined by incoming Oklahoma All-Staters Logan Burgess, Tonkawa; Kiki Boyer, Sapulpa; Carley Frymire, Thomas; Maci Hanson, Choctaw; and Lora Riley, Alva. Teacher of the Month Trent Holland - Enid High School

Trent Holland is currently a Biology teacher and the head wrestling coach for the Enid Plainsmen, and according to Holland it’s his unique background that makes him the type of teacher and coach he is. Before beginning his career at Enid Holland served his country for eight years in the Marine Corps. After being honorably discharged, Holland finished his college degree and came back to his hometown of Enid to teach and coach.

“I think what helps me is the self motivation and self-discipline that the Marine Corps helped develop in me. You have to be self-disciplined and self-motivated to succeed and those things were things that my coaches and teachers helped teach me and then I transferred it to the Marine Corps and now I hope that I can pass that along to my students and my wrestlers,” Holland said. It was also in the Marine Corps that Holland realized he wanted to become a teacher and a coach. “When I was in the Marine Corps, I was given the opportunity to instruct young marines and they were kids right out of high school and I really enjoyed that. So when I got to a point in my military career that I could start working on my degree while I was still in the service I started thinking about it as a possible career and kind of fell into teaching.”

Overall, Holland has been teaching and coaching in Enid for 16 years and in that time he has taught several different subjects and coached football, wrestling and track. After having Holland as a teacher, coach, or both Holland hopes students at Enid leave with a couple of things.

“I just want them to know that even after they are done I care about them and care about their well-being. I hope I have showed them that either by the example I set or by the words I say,” Holland said. “I hope I’ve taught them something along the way that they will be able to use later in life, if not I haven’t done my job. I always think about it and pray that I’m leading them down the correct path and that I don’t discourage them from anything they want to accomplish.” For his dedication to the students at Enid High School, Trent Holland is the Enid Teacher of the Month.

r o f d e s m i s r e P cc Su Bryce Franklin is working on a plan of success at Autry Technology Center Drummond senior Bryce Franklin began his coursework at Autry Technology Center just this year but he is already excelling at his work and turning the heads of his professors. Franklin is involved in the Collision Repair program at Autry, a program that provides students with training to repair or replace auto body parts using hand and power tools. Students also learn to refinish surfaces through painting or spot painting. Some topics covered are safety, welding and cutting techniques, identification and analysis of damage, measuring and texturing systems and refinishing from minor repairs to total paint jobs. Franklin said that he first became interested in Autry because one of his friends recommended it. “One of the seniors last year is a friend of mine and he said he learned a lot about fixing cars. Also, collision repair is something that will always be around so it is a skill worth learning about,” Franklin said. When asked if he would recommend Autry to other pro-

You actually know what to do when you get out in the world and are prepared,” Franklin said. When he isn’t working on his courses at Autry, Franklin plays basketball, baseball and runs cross country at Drummond. After he finishes his senior year at Drummond and graduates in May, Franklin said he plans to continue classes at Autry. “I want to come back to Autry and finish up the Collision Repair program and then take the Automotive program. The skills I’ve learned at Autry are for something I can fall back on no matter what I end up doing,” Franklin said. “I want to go into aviation and work on planes. 6-6 junior Grant Ritter should provide good frontcourt depth off the bench as should 5-10 junior Hayden Colwell.

In a loaded Class 3A division the Alva Goldbugs may not be mentioned as early favorites. Head coach Paul Duncan however knows he has a squad capable of making noise in the postseason though.

Other key players in the Alva lineup will be juniors Ben Ryerson, Rafferty Brown and Justin Myer.

That squad is led by VYPE Top 100 selection Jeremiah Bozeman who will man one of the guard spots for Alva. Last season Bozeman averaged 16 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game and will be counted on to do even more this year. Tevin Long is another key player the Goldbugs will rely on this year after he averaged 8.8 points and 3.7 rebounds last year. “Jeremiah and Tevin were both all-conference players last year and should have good years again. Jeremiah is primed to take over a leadership role and continue our past success,” Duncan said. Also in the backcourt expect to see 5-11 junior Brooks Hadwiger to play a big role. In the frontcourt, 6-3 senior Ridge Hughbanks and 6-2 junior Ethan Harzman will be the team’s foundation in the paint. 24

DECEMBER 2015

Overall Duncan said he thinks his team has made strides with their defense this year but will need to replace a good chunk of offense. “We should be better on the defensive end, but we will have to replace quite a few points on the offensive end. I look for Bozeman and Long to have big years and have some of our young players ready to step up and fill roles,” Duncan said.

The team’s home opener will come on Dec. 15 when they play host to Weatherford.

The Alva Lady Bugs are aiming to add yet another gold ball to their trophy case In 2014 the Alva Lady Bugs took home the Class 3A gold ball. Last year, the Lady Bugs dropped into 2A and went 30-0 claiming their second title in as many years. This year it’s back to 3A but if the Lady Bugs are going to win three gold balls in a row it will have to be with a new head coach on the sideline. Former head coach Eric Smith has departed to become the head coach at Frontier and Smith’s former assistant Dusty Horn has stepped up to take the reins in Alva. Horn said that he doesn’t anticipate many changes due to the coaching change but did mention a few tweaks in the game plan. “I think what has made us successful the past few years is our defense and that isn’t going to change this year. What may change this year is you may see us run more zone defense just because of our size and the mobility of our post players. I’m still a man-to-man

guy and we are still going to be mainly man-toman but we will probably sprinkle in more zone,” Horn said. Leading the way for Alva is superstar senior point guard and VYPE Top 100 selection Jaden Hobbs. Committed to Oklahoma State University, Hobbs is a true floor general who can both score and distribute the ball to her teammates. Junior Whitney Randall will also play a key role this year as a versatile athlete capable of playing anywhere from the shooting guard to center. Fellow juniors Jordan Shiever, Lexie Shafer and Mattie Duncan all will provide the Lady Bugs with some serious size with all of the three post players standing at least 6-feet tall. Look for Cathy Mapes and Ally Riley to also provide the Lady Bugs with big minutes this year. Mapes is a defensive

Whitney Randall specialist on the perimeter while Riley is an amazing athlete capable of playing several positions on the floor. Horn is also expecting big things from sophomores Tatum Rouse, Camryn Wren and Julie Owen. The team’s home opener will come on Dec. 15 when they play host to Weatherford.

Debate

I’ve seen a lot of basketball over the years and Jaden Hobbs is the best I’ve seen in Oklahoma. My coworkers and so-called experts think otherwise. You be the judge. By Kyle Kendrick: VYPE NWOK and SWOK Editor While we were putting this preview together we had a debate in the VYPE office and I stood alone when I said: “We should consider ourselves lucky because we are currently watching the greatest girls high school basketball player this state has ever seen, and that player is Alva superstar Jaden Hobbs.” My colleagues had some differing opinions but I’m standing tall because I know I’m right. Before I tell you why I am though I wanted to share their opinions with you. Brad Heath – VYPE Editorial Director No doubt Jaden Hobbs is a great player, but we can’t call her the “greatest player” just yet. What we can do however is call Atoka’s Crystal Robinson or “C-Rob” the greatest girls player in Oklahoma high school or college history. As a player at Atoka, Robinson played 6-on-6 ball from 1989-92; scoring 322 career state tournament points. In ’92 she scored 124 points in the state tournament to lead the Lady Wampus Cats to a state title. She was named to the WBCA All-American First Team and played in the inaugural game scoring a game-high 25 points and was voted MVP. Her college career was even more impressive. While at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Robinson set multiple records including points, rebounds, assists and steals. Robinson became a threetime NAIA All-American and is in several Hall of Fames, including Southeastern Oklahoma State, NAIA, and the Jim Thorpe Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. The Daily Oklahoman named her to the All-Century team for both

high school and college and VYPE named Robinson to the Top 100 list of All-Time Athletes from Oklahoma. Enough said. Bill Huddleston – VYPE Three Rivers and SEOK Editor Not so fast my friend…

Best Ever discussions have to include Sequoyah Tahlequah’s Angel Goodrich, who was only seconds away from helping the Lady Indians win

four consecutive state championships, prior to taking her talents to the college level and eventually to the WNBA.

It also has to include Kelli Litsch of Thomas who was a driving force in Oklahoma high school basketball during the transition from the 6-on-6 game of yesteryear to the 5-on-5 game enjoyed today. While leading the Lady Terriers to two state titles, Litsch scored 3,664 points in her high school career including a state tournament career average of 37.6 points per game. Litsch, a four-time NAIA All-American led Southwestern State University to three national championships where Litsch gained MVP honors three times in the national tournament. She’s a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Cal Ross – VYPE NEOK and North Editor

Jaden Hobbs is unquestionably one

of the best girls basketball players to play on the hardwood in Oklahoma high school basketball history. With Alva moving back up to Class 3A this season, she has a chance to add to that legacy. Is she the best girls player of all-time? Debatable.

Newkirk’s Kinzie Glover, who played for the Lady Tigers from 20012005, would like to enter that discussion. Glover set the state tournament record for points in a game, at the time, with 44 points in the semifinals against Bethel in 2005. That record stood until Hobbs herself scored 45 in a win against Washington in 2014. However, Hobbs needed overtime to surpass Glover’s record. The extra period allowed Hobbs to boost her numbers a little bit. Who knows how many points Glover could’ve added on with an overtime period? Glover also went on to play college basketball at Southern Nazarene University, where she continued to shine and was named as an NAIA AllAmerican.

Look, I respect Crystal Robinson and Kinzie Glover as players, the same way I respect players like Jenna Plumley, Lana Keith, Angel Goodrich, Stephanie McGee, Danielle Grant and Kevi Luper. Bottom line? Hobbs is just better than all of them. Hobbs already owns the record for most points in a single state tournament (5-on-5 that is) with 107, if she played 6-on-6 those numbers could easily match or best those of players like Robinson. And overtime or not she holds the record for most points in a 5-on-5 state tournament game, so that argument just doesn’t hold water to me, Cal. Add on to all of that Hobbs is second all-time in career state tournament points in the 5-on-5 era with 241 and will likely pass Goodrich who is number one with 268, this year. Looking past the numbers Hobbs is also a floor general who distributes the ball and can really frustrate you with her defense. She shines in the big moment, she doesn’t shrink away from it. And finally, she just wins. So far in Hobbs’ storied career Alva is 83-7, with two gold balls and a silver. She’s got a great chance to add to that total this year and if Alva wins a third title well let’s just say, point proven. Thanks to Cal, Bill and Brad though for weighing in. I guess we will have to wait until the season is over for you guys to admit I’m right.

High Hopes Abound for Woodward Boomers Anthony Hickman

The Woodward Boomers basketball team is setting its sights on Tulsa and the state tournament Woodward Boomers head basketball coach Corey Miller makes no bones about it, his goals for this year include a trip to the Class 5A state tournament. “Our goals are always to make it to the state tournament. I think if you don’t set your goals for that and have those lofty expectations you’re cheating your kids,” Miller

said. “We also want to win our conference, that’s something we always set as a goal and something we always strive to do.” Leading the team this year will be point guard and VYPE Top 100 selection Garrett Owen. Regrded by his coach as one of the best point guards in the state, Owen is a player capable of going for 20 any given night but also sees the floor well and gets his teammates involved in the offensive attack. Giving the Boomers a powerful 1-2 punch will be 6-8 junior center Anthony Hickman. Hickman has a strong back-to-the-basket offensive post game but can also step out and shoot the three along with being a great defensive presence.

Seniors Mauro Rojas and Trevor Ludwyk will also play major roles this year for the Boomers. Junior Zach Kee is an athletic guard that Miller will look to put to good use while senior Logan Long and sophomores Slayden Covalt and Matt Martinez should also play big minutes. “Our biggest strength is having one of the best point guards in the state. Any time you can have a great floor general like Garrett it’s going to make you better. Then when you pair him with Hickman and we can go to a inside-out two-man game it’s going to make us really tough to defend. We just need to work on getting him the ball where he can do damage and not settling for as many threes this year,” Miller said.

Moving up to Class 5A hasn’t deterred the goals of the Woodward Lady Boomers basketball team “Our goal is to get to the state tournament. We not only want to get there but we also want to win a few games when we get there,” Woodward Lady Boomers head coach Kinzie Didier said. Along with the big goal of getting to the state tournament Didier also said the team’s goals include winning their conference title and having a strong January. “We have hurt ourselves in the past with how we have played in January. The coaches have had us right where we needed to be because you are ranked on how you perform and not your potential and we have just had a hard time playing up to our potential in January for some

reason,” Didier said. “This year we would rather be the team with the target on our backs, but still not forget that any team can be beaten on any given night, because we have been that team the last few years.” Leading the team this year will be VYPE Top 100 selection and Oral Roberts University commit Hillary Hurst. A 5-11 guard, Hurst has a strong allaround game and can put up points in bunches. Seniors Devre Newby and Kameron Pope will also be mainstays in the backcourt this year. Newby will start at the point guard spot for the Lady Boomers and is likely their best defender according to Didier while Pope is the team’s three-point specialist on the wing. In the frontcourt Woodward will rely heavily on junior Addison Rowley and senior Rachel Dierks. Rowley is a player

We only graduated one from last year’s 20-6 team and have a lot of quality players returning and two move-ins that will be right in the mix,” Mooreland head coach Tim Callison said. “Again, our strength will be in our guard play. We have gotten much better on the defensive end of the floor and with our ability to score we should make a very deep run in the playoffs this year.” Leading the way for the Bearcats this year will be senior guards Blake Murray and Kyler Hensley. Murray is a two-time conference player of the year and averaged 14.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists last season. Meanwhile Hensley is a returning all-conference performer who averaged 8.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game last year.

The Price is Right Dallas Price is currently excelling at High Plains Tech

Fargo student Dallas Price is a star on the basketball floor and in his team’s season opening win over Cheyenne, Price scored 24 points and pulled down six rebounds. Outside of basketball Price also plays baseball for Fargo and is a versatile athlete who fans may find playing shortstop, centerfield or toeing the rubber as the team’s pitcher. Outside of being a standout athlete at Fargo, Price is also a standout student at High Plains Tech where he is a second year student in their Construction Trades program. Price said the skills he is learning in the program are ones he will

use forever. “After high school I’d like to go to Oklahoma State University or Southwestern Oklahoma State University and get into their Engineering programs but I would also love to be able to play baseball or basketball at the next level. I want to keep using my skills I’ve learned at High Plains either in what I do in my career or just in my spare time doing some smaller work on my own,” Price said. Price said it was the word of several friends that first got him interested in taking classes at High Plains Tech.

“I had some friends go and they said it it was really fun so I figured I would give it a try and I’ve really enjoyed it,” Price said. When asked if he would recommend High Plains to other students Price’s answer was short but straight to the point. “I sure would,” Price said. For his effort as a student-athlete at Fargo and for his high quality work at High Plains, Dallas Price is the High Plains Tech student of the month.

Mason Overstreet and Marco Charqueno

Northwest Oklahoma Basketball Sneak Peek Yellowjackets Ready to Sting the Competition After going 21-5 last season, Kingfisher head coach Jared Reese is eyeing an even better finish this season. Led by versatile guards Mason Overstreet and Marco Charqueno the Yellowjackets have a balanced roster with good depth and should be a major state tournament contender. Last season Overstreet started every game and averaged 12 points per contest. Charqueno meanwhile averaged six points per game and started 15 of the team’s 26 games. The x-factor this season could be Beau Jinkens, a move-in from Okeene who started at quarterback this year for the Kingfisher football team. Finally expect seniors Drew Shults and Landon Forman to make big contributions along with freshman Jett Sternberger. “It should be a different look for us. We are a much smaller and a better shooting team than previous years,” Reese said. “We should have better ball handling and scoring offense but defense and rebounding will be the question marks on this team. If that gets figured out it should be a successful season with may young guys getting playing time.” In Reese’s system the Yellowjackets have gone 42-9 over the past two years but have been ousted in the area tournament both seasons. After knocking on the door but getting turned away the past two years don’t be surprised if the Yellowjackets just kick it in this season. Watch This The Geary Lady Bison will be under new direction this year as head coach Amie Shackelford takes over as the head coach of the program. Shackelford also was the head 34

coach of the Lady Bison fastpitch team this fall after coming to Geary from Woodward. Last year the Lady Bison finished 7-15 and this year will be hoping to improve that mark. The game to watch will come on Jan. 25 when the Lady Bison host Mt. ViewGotebo Lady Tigers. Last year the Lady Tigers were 13-14 and a win for the Lady Bison would be a big win for the program. Tigers on the Prowl Led by junior point guard Santee Littlebird the Canton Tigers should be a team to watch this year. Last season Littlebird averaged 23 points per game and should equal or better that this season. Senior Chase Hysell and juniors Austin Sessions and Cole Humbarger will also play key roles this season with all three players back after missing large portions of last year due to injury. Finally expect senior Brock Foster to also make big contributions this year. Last season Canton won six of its final eight games and head coach Caleb Patterson is hoping to use that as a springboard into this season. “We were 7-17 last year but we won six of our last eight and kind of started figuring it all out. Hopefully we can continue to build on that and continue to stay healthy, if we can then I think

we have a chance to have a pretty good year,” Patterson said. Following their first nine games of the season , Canton will come back from Christmas Break with a game at Okeene. The showdown with the Whippets should be a good one, the two teams split last season with Canton’s win coming in overtime.

Raney, Raney and more Raney Last season the Cashion Wildcats went 15-11, in large portion due to the play of star guard Vaughn Raney. A VYPE Top 100 selection, Raney averaged 20.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game last year while also adding 2.7 assists per contest. Raney is a four-year starter at Cashion and has already gone over 1,000 points in his career. Already drawing attention DII colleges and several NAIA and JUCO schools, Raney could easily average 20 points and 10 rebounds this year and greatly bolster his recruiting, but more importantly lead Cashion to a deep playoff run and possibly a state tournament berth. A Powerful 1-2 Punch The Cashion Lady Wildcats qualified for the Class 2A state tournament last season and are eying an even better finish this year. What makes Cashion so difficult is the 1-2 punch of senior point guard Karson Maple and sophomore Presley Payahsape. Last season Maple averaged 9.1 points and 4.6 assists per game while Payahsape averaged 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Both players should see their point totals go up this year with the departure of last year’s star shooting guard Alix Robinson. Expect Cashion to go as far as this duo can

lead them, which should be pretty far. Lady Eagles Flying High The Watonga Lady Eagles ended last season on an upswing and advanced all the way to the area tournament before being eliminated in a hard fought loss to Minco. This year the Lady Eagles bring back a team heavy on experience and hungry for even more success. Senior forwards Riley Schenk and Autumn Jones lead the way for the Lady Eagles but also look for juniors Allie Baker and Claire Gauer to be key contributors at the guard spots and for senior J’Shon Richey to be the go to player at the pivot spot. “We are excited about the upcoming season. We had a good finish last year and are hoping to pick up where we left off last season,” Lady Eagles head coach J.C. Estep said. Warriors Hoping Balance Leads to the Big House If you look at the Okarche boys basketball roster no one player jumps off the page at you with stats that make your jaw drop. What the Warriors do have is a roster full of experienced players that can all score 12-15 on any given night. Head coach Ray West believes that he has the type of roster that can get the Warriors to the Big

House. “We only lost one senior off last year’s team and bring back four starters and one key transfer. Our junior high team was undefeated last year and we have a lot of depth and will play 10-12 guys each game,” West said. Expect seniors Kyle Pfaff, Bo Banfield and Noah Wittrock to all have banner years this season. A Good One to Watch On January 12 the Okeene Whippets will host the Crescent Tigers at 8:00 p.m. Both teams were ousted at the regional tournament last year and both are programs with a solid history of winning. Last year Crescent got the win by a score of 58-45 and you know the Whippets haven’t forgotten that. Expect this game to be a knock-downdrag-out fight with both teams willing to stand in the center of the ring and throw big punches. If you are in the area you want to see this one.

Eagles Finish Regular Season Strong

After starting the season 0-3 the Hennessey Eagles football team won six of their last seven to finish second in District 2A-1 Starting off the season the Hennessey Eagles dropped their opener to Class 4A Elgin by a score of 16-14. Then in week two the Eagles fell to 3A Kingfisher 28-20. Finally, in week three Hennessey lost to 3A Jones 28-6 to drop to 0-3 headed in district play. The losses however weren’t of great concern to Hennessey head coach Rick Luetjen, who said the challenging early portion of the schedule was all a part of the plan. “That’s been our philosophy for a long time here, all the way back to when coach Watford was the head coach. We always want to challenge ourselves early in the year because we know we may or may not see competition like that in our district, some years we have and some years we haven’t, so we always try to challenge ourselves and give ourselves those looks early,” Luetjen said. “We don’t put a lot of stock in whether we win or lose those early non-district games because we know it’s part of the process and they are going to make us better in the long run. A few years ago we lost to Jones in one of those early games then 36

came back to beat them in the state championship game.” True to form the Eagles held fast to the formula that has worked so well over the past decade and quickly reeled off six wins in a row. What was the most impressive about that streak was that after giving up 14 points to Alva in their first district game the Eagles posted five straight shutouts, beating Tonkawa, Pawnee, Perry, the OKC Patriots and Newkirk. The streak set up a showdown between the Eagles and the Chisholm Longhorns for the district title. In the game against Chisholm, Hennessey’s defense again came up big by only letting the Chisholm offense find the end zone twice. The Eagles’ offense however couldn’t get much going all night and the Longhorns managed to escape with a 15-7 win after a last-minute Hennessey drive ended on an incomplete 4th-and-goal pass with just under 30 seconds left in the game. Luetjen said that he is very happy with the product his defense has put on the field this season. “I’m really excited about where our defense is at. I think they have done a great job since those first non-district

games. I think we have the right guys in the right spots and they are playing hard and playing physical,” Luetjen said. “I think they give us a great chance to win by keeping us in games and as bad as we played against Chisholm those guys kept us in it and gave us a chance to tie it and possibly go win it in overtime.” While the Eagles put together another stellar regular season they saw their playoff dream come to an end on Nov. 20 when they fell to the Washington Warriors by a score of 35-17. Hennessey led the game 1714 at the half but in the second stanza the Warriors were simply too much outscoring the Eagles 21-0 to end Hennessey’s gold ball dreams.

Hennessey Regular Season Statistical Leaders Passing: Zane Hugaboom – 1,115 yards. 4 touchdowns. Rushing: Tabor Johns – 932 yards. 16 touchdowns. Receiving: Cale Blehm – 398 yards. 4 touchdowns. Defense: Mason Weber – 71 tackles. 8 sacks.

Lots of positives for young Yellowjackets this season

For the first time this decade Kingfisher football experienced a losing season 11-3. 15-0. 14-1. 9-2. 10-4. 12-3. Those are the records Kingfisher football has put up in the six seasons prior to this fall. A combined 71-13 record, a gold ball and three silvers go way beyond a winning tradition. Like the old saying goes however, everything that goes up must come down, and the Kingfisher football team hit that downturn this year finishing 4-7 after a first round playoff loss to John Marshall. Kingfisher head coach Jeff Myers said

that he did believe there were positives to take away from the season even though it wasn’t the type of season the Kingfisher community is accustomed to. “We were really young so we were forced to play a lot of freshmen and sophomores which didn’t really help us this year but in the long run will really be beneficial because those guys were able to gain a lot of valuable experience,” Myers said. Along with the younger players that gained varsity experience Myers also pointed out several seniors in Reid Trout, Drew Shults and Ramon Zapapta he felt like had extremely good years. “Reid I thought played great at both running back and linebacker for us after working really hard all summer. He was the captain and the emotional and physical leader of our team. Drew I thought stepped up and played better and better each game and Ramon was a kid who didn’t even play last year due to family reasons and this year he became a starter for us.” When asked if the team’s struggles

this year were due to complacency Myers said he didn’t think there was much of that among the guys in the locker room but added he felt like there was probably some of it going around. “I know myself and the coaches weren’t thinking that way and I don’t think the kids really were either. There may have been some of it though, I think it’s just human nature that when you have the kind of success we’ve had here for some of that to develop amongst people,” Myers said. “In a weird way it may help us because now our kids understand that we can’t just go out there and win because of our past success.” With those thoughts in mind Myers said the work for next season begins immediately with discussions and work in the weight room and conditioning. “We’ll start right away. We will talk to the young kids that will be back and make sure they are fully aware of what our expectations are for them. Those are the same as they have been since we got here and that’s not going to change,” Myers said. “We want our kids to understand this type of year is unacceptable here at Kingfisher.”

HELPING WOMEN

Get Healthy with Robotics

The physicians at INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center are helping women get healthier through the use of robotic assisted surgery. Robotics can be used to assist in a variety of surgical procedures from hysterectomy to uterine fibroid removal. The robot’s tiny tools allow surgeons to make the smallest incisions, and to access difficult-to-reach areas, sometimes with only a single incision. Patients may recover faster, have fewer side effects and experience less pain and scarring. For more information, visit our website at integrisok.com/enid-robotics or call 580-977-1927.
