Boys After winning a state title last year the Bulldogs are anxious for the season to begin as they set their sights on their third gold ball in four years. With zero returning starters back from last season though, coach Cowherd will be attempting that with a group that is largely untested at the varsity level. Senior forward Jacob Essman (6-6) will provide some much needed senior leadership on a team coach Cowherd describes as very young and inexperienced that has had great success on lower levels. Fellow

seniors Taylor Hicks (5-8) and Trey Sneed (6-4) will also give the young squad a boost of maturity at several key spots this year. Junior guard Terril Bruner (5-7) will be another key factor for the Bulldogs this year. Sophomore forward Kristian Doolittle (6-6) will round out a starting rotation that will boast some good size and athleticism especially in the frontcourt.

“I’m excited about a new group of players. We have established a definite culture over the last number of years, and I’m excited to see a new group have the chance to add to that culture and history,” Cowherd said. Girls The Lady Bulldogs return three starters from last year, bringing a good mix of experience and youth to the floor. Junior guard

Casady CYCLONES

Cyclones Basketball off and running.

Casady Girls Keep Positive Outlook First year head coach Marion Tolon is prepared for the long Southwest Preparatory Conference season and has instilled a positive approach in the players. “As long as we stay positive and continue to work hard, things will fall into place,” coach Tolon said. Senior guard Dana Silver (5-2) will run the offense for the Lady Cyclones bringing quickness and experience to the floor. Claire Hendee (5-7, Jr.) will play opposite Silver in the backcourt. The combo can create havoc on defense and are real threats on the offensive end of the court. Sophomores Grace Huff (5-7) and Camille Jackson (5-11) are gaining more experience with every game and could be the answer for coach Tolon down low. Forward Delaney Henry (6-0, Jr.) delivers in the paint and has the talent to step out and hit from anywhere on the floor. The Lady Cyclones are going to implement a matchup zone defense allowing their players to shift and not give up easy baskets. The SPC schedule is a tough one this year, but coach Tolon has the right attitude to make it a successful one.

12

Casady Boys See Success Early Head coach Demarcco Owens has the Cyclones at 3-0 to start the 2013-14 season. Big wins over Mount St. Mary, 62-59 and Oklahoma Christian, 61-52 put the Cyclones on the winning track in the Southwest Preparatory Conference’s North division. VYPEOK.COM

|

DECEMBER 2013

Defense is a big reason Casady has performed well early. Senior guard James Timberlake is the leader the Cyclones needed to step up this season. The 6-foot1 guard plays hard on both ends of the floor and can create quick baskets for forwards Nick Thompson and Pen Tompkins. In the North division the Cyclones have some solid competition in Irving Cistercian and Fort Worth Country Day. Arlington Oakridge is another talented squad in the SPC that will be gunning for the Cyclones this season. The new year starts with another big game against Oklahoma Christian School followed by a trip to the Southern Nazarene/ Bethany Tournament. The schedule doesn’t get any easier as the Cyclones will face Heritage Hall then take a trip to Dallas for games against Episcopal School of Dallas and Oakridge. First year head coach Owens has a veteran team. The battle-hardened squad will look to improve on last year’s 10-13 record. The Cyclones will have to overcome the loss of standout guard Curtis Haywood, who is now at Mustang.

Senior guard James Timberlake (6-1) will be one of the pillars the Cyclones lean on this year along with senior Patrick Loeffler (6-0), who will play both guard and forward this season.

Tompkins (6-4) also figures to be a major part of the Cyclones’ offense this year. In the frontcourt, Thompson, a 6-3 senior, and John George, a 6-6 junior, will patrol the paint this year and be a threat to score along with major forces on the glass. Boys Second-year head coach Terry Long returns all five starters off a 14-9 team a year ago, including VYPE Top 100 star Jakolby Long. The sophomore gives the Broncos a chance to be among the state’s elite the next few years. Long, a 6-foot-4 guard, averaged 15 points a game. Backcourt mate Terrell Williams also cracked double digits, averaging 10 points per game. Look for 6-foot-9 sophomore Austin Meyer to be a handful in the frontcourt after averaging 7.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last year. Other returning starters include 6-foot-4 forward Geoff Hightower and 6-foot2 guard Aubrey Johnson, each of whom averaged 6.5 and 7.6 points a year ago. Players to keep an eye on include Chandler Garrett, Isaiah Hammons and DeMarion Love. “This is a more experienced team, a talented group of players with a year of experience,” Long said. “We should have a chance to contend for the title.” Girls Kevin Korstjens takes over the Mustang program after successful stints at Bridge Creek and Edmond North. It’s not as though there is a big rebuilding effort for Korstjens.

He replaces Nikki McCann, who was promoted within the athletic department after finishing 17-11 a year ago. And although Mustang does not return any starters, there is talent, albeit young. Look for seniors Brooke Irwin and Candis Davis to provide leadership. Projected impact players include junior guard Madison Maxwell and sophomores Addyson Lawson and Brandi Russell. Korstjens said Mustang fans can look forward to “a team that gives consistent effort and attitude every night. “I want to be tougher than our opponent, mentally and physically. Basketball is a game of runs and you must be tough enough to overcome the bad ones. That will be a big factor in the success of our season,” says Korstjens.

The rest of the starting lineup looks to include junior Allison Rogers who should provide help inside and fellow junior Ashlie Rose from her guard spot on the floor. Fields says the girls’ great work ethic should produce positive results. “With some improved fundamentals, more of a man-to-man emphasis on defense and more study on the mental side of the game we should be improved.” It won’t be easy as four of the top 10, Southmoore, Edmond Memorial, Norman North and Midwest City are on the schedule twice.

Boys The Jags will look to 6-foot-4 senior forward Tripp Fuller to lead the way after averaging over 17 points and nearly 9.0 rebounds per game last year. “We’re going to count on Tripp’s senior leadership and production to continue building our program. We’re very inexperienced but we have good depth and guys that want to play hard.” Hodges added. Six-foot-four senior forward Deron Hill is expected help inside and 6-foot-3 junior Justin Cates moves over from Southmoore to lend a hand. Girls Coach Andrea Guziec says, “I can’t wait to coach this team, they worked hard during the summer and are ready to win some ballgames.” The Lady Jags will be young again this year but had promising results from last year’s freshman class that returns 20 points per game. Sydney Chastain runs the point and averaged over eight points per game to go along with three rebounds and three assists each contest. Kaci Richardson and Ashley Gomez combined to average nearly twelve points and nine rebounds per game. Six-foot Junior Callie Palmer will patrol the paint and scored five points per game. Victoria Lay (5-11) is the lone senior starter and averaged five points and five boards each night. Everybody will have to step it up to for the Lady Jags to continue on the path to .500 and beyond. the backcourt. The Bombers also have four returning scorers in Louis Parker (5.9), Mikey Smith (5.8), Cedric Fair (5.7) and Caleb Corprew (5.2). Also look for Johntae Upchurch to contribute at forward. “We need to have a sense of urgency and need our bench to be productive,” Bradley said. “We had a good summer playing top competition. Our style of play will be the same as always, try to dictate tempo and running offensively and defensively. Sharing the ball and having multiple playmakers is a strength.” Girls

The Bombers motto of ‘play hard, play smart, play to win’ has ninth-year head coach Art Bode excited about the season. Midwest City is coming off a 13-win season and with four returning starters, there is plenty of reason for to think they will surpass that win total this year. Headlining the returning starters is senior guard/forward Jasauen Beard. The 5-foot-11 Beard is the leading returning scorer at 13.9 points per game. She also averaged five

rebounds, 2.2 assists and nearly two steals. Sophomore Asia Davis had the second highest returning average at 8.7 points. Senior Kara Partridge and sophomore Chinna Fair followed with averages of 7.1 and 6.1, respectively. Expect sophomore Irean Smith to contribute as well. Bode will employ a man defense to capitalize on the team’s speed. Once the youngsters learn the system, look for Midwest City to make a deep run, the coach said. Asked about the season’s outlook, Bode said, “Young talent learning from our older, more experienced players and steady growth as the season progresses.”

Experience is the key word for veteran coach Tim Stogsdill. The Eagles return four starters and eight players with significant minutes from last season’s Area Consolation finalist, Stogsdill said. Senior guard Brett Cannon and Xavier Hunter top the list of returning starters. The backcourt duo averaged 15 and 10 points, respectively. Junior guard Breiman Alexander is next with a six-point average followed by senior Will Trotter at 4.0 and junior Trent King at 2.0. Top prospects off the bench include seniors Ahnte Harkey (6.0 ppg), Orlando Sheets (2.0) and junior D.J. Freeman (2.0).

Seniors Alaisha Castleberry, Piper Kalthoff and Alexus Ochoa-Dockins are looking to lead Del City to a fourth consecutive Class 5A state tournament. Castleberry, a 5-foot-5 guard who is capable of playing either the point or shoot guard position, is the top returning scorer at nine points. She also averaged five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Kalthoff, a 5-foot-7 guard/ forward, returns after scoring six points a game while the 5-foot-7 Dockins chipped in five points. The frontcourt is young but talented, led by 5-foot-10 sophomore Breail Goodlow 4.0 ppg, 4.0 reb), 5-foot-8 freshman Madison Welchel and 5-foot-8 junior Diamonde Foxworth.

“One of the best guards in 5A, Brett Cannon has missed the past two years of the playoffs with season-ending injuries,” Stogsdill said. “He looks to guide the Eagles back to state with our up-tempo style of play. We believe our tough 6A schedule in the Mid-State Conference will help make us battletested for the 5A playoffs.”

“We are pretty small but very quick,” Sears said. “We will run and gun. My seniors are the heart and soul of this team and we have ‘unfinished business’.”

The Titans will boast one of the tallest lineups in Class 5A this year with three players standing in at 6-foot-6 in juniors Hayden Howell and Wes Smith and senior Anthony Woods. Six-foot-two senior forward Cameron Warren is the leading returning scorer with 10.4 points. He also averaged nearly nine rebounds a game. Chantz Woodberry also comes back after averaging 3.6 points per contest last year.

“We will have a different look about us now that we have some size and strength inside,” Price said. “We will rely on our post play and look to develop some guards throughout the season. We are excited about the season and the possibilities for our team.” Girls

Carl Albert returns three starters on a 22-win team that fell just shy of the Class 5A state tournament in 2012-13. The experience will allow the Titans to operate primarily in man-to-man defense but capable of showing multiple defenses based on the opponent,

Price said. Jordan Gilbert returns with a double-digit scoring mark of 11 points per game. The scrappy 5-foot9 senior guard also averaged nearly six rebounds. Daesha Pearson might be a little undersized as a 5-9 post player but she held her own a year ago averaging six points and six rebounds. Asher Sutterfield joins Pearson in the frontcourt where she registered five points and six rebounds. Junior guard Kaley Hallmark is a move-in who will give stability to the backcourt. Senior guard Jazmine Anglin has battled back from injury and will also contribute to the team.

“We will be changing our style of play a little to fit our personnel,” Price said. “We are probably going to have nights where we play a small lineup and play more up-tempo. “Our depth should be something that helps us quite a bit. We’ve also got four seniors who contributed last year led by Jordan Gilbert. I am looking for those four to lead us to a great year.”

Boys Guided by an extremely talented group of juniors the Wolves are looking to improve on last year’s overall record of 15-10. Santa Fe also has good depth this season and will look to put that to its advantage by playing an up-tempo style. VYPE Top 100 selection Curran Scott (6-3) will be a major weapon in the Santa Fe arsenal this year after averaging 15 points and three rebounds per game a year ago. Scott is a versatile player who can play both under the rim and on the perimeter depending on the lineup coach Hatchett puts on the floor. Junior guard Daron Mims (6-3) averaged 10 points and four rebounds a game last year and will be a major part of the Wolves’ gameplan this season. After averaging five points and seven rebounds per game last year junior

Senior Christian Bills (6-3) and sophomore Tre Evans (6-1) will round out Santa Fe’s first five this season. “We will be a team that competes every possession and plays with no regrets,” coach Hatchett said. Boys With three returning starters back, look for the Antlers to run man-to-man defense this season. Leading the way is junior forward/post Conner Avants, who averaged 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Josh Stokesberry scored two points and two rebounds. Senior Tyler Haddock, a 6-4 guard, brings back a 6.0 point and 3.0 rebound average. Top prospects include senior forward Caleb Eldridge, senior guard Brett Valentine, junior guard Taylor Anderson and sophomore guard Elyjah Clark. “We will have a very balanced team that is going to compete every game,” Bailey said. “I am very excited about our team and I am looking forward to being a part of a special group of players.”

Girls Totsy Manning will look to a trio of returning starters this season in seniors Whitney Jones and Bayli Blanchard, and junior Dakota Vann. Jones, a 5-foot10 guard and a VYPE Top 100 player, returns after winning the defensive player of the year for the Suburban Conference. The 5-10 Blanchard is coming off a junior season in which she scored 8.6 points while Vann poured in 7.7 points a year ago. Juniors Abbey Renner, Shae Shuffler and Elyna Wilson should have expanded roles on the team this year. “Our team returns this season with experience on the court,” Manning said. “We will play an up-tempo game with solid defense on the court. We are looking forward to an exciting season on the court with great defense and an experienced upper class.”

Boys Tim Flanigan is setting some fairly simple but hard-to-reach goals this season. “My main goal is to win the conference, which definitely isn’t going to be easy with so many tough teams in our conference like Piedmont, Carl Albert, Noble and Chickasha. Our next goal is to make the state tournament because we know once you get there anything is possible,” Flanigan said. The Bluejays will rely on versatile junior L’liott Curry and senior point guard Edgar Baez to lead the offense. Both Curry and Baez are pure scorers and can either come off a screen for a clean shot or create their own off the bounce. Seniors TJ Wilson and Landon Solorio will also be mainstays in the backcourt this year. Meanwhile senior Bailey Nichols will anchor the paint and

be Guthrie’s main weapon in the frontcourt. Sophomore guards JD Honeycutt and Ja’lyn Morgan will bring their own flavor and add some depth to the Bluejays offense this year. Girls One big question looms large for the Lady Jays and head coach Pete Papahronis this year; how to replace Melinda Murrillo, who is now at NEO? For the last two years Murillo led Guthrie in scoring and last season Murillo was named a first team All-Suburban Conference player. The answer may be a scoring by committee formula headlined by sophomore Micayla Hayes, who was selected as a third team all-conference player last year. Guthrie Wrestling Bluejay Wrestling Ready to Challenge

Is there a school more proud of their athletes than Guthrie? Parents and fans are flying the blue and silver like never before after the Bluejays brought home the Class 5A state title in football. And as football season comes to a dramatic end, several of the players on that championship team will now turn their focus to the wrestling mat and head coach Justin Stevens. Senior Conner Howard is one of those players ready to take the mat after an unforgettable season on the gridiron. Howard is ranked No.2 at 220lbs and is considered one of the top wrestlers at that weight regardless of class. For coach Stevens, it means having a guy that you can depend on in duals and someone that should compete for a state title. Another big man the Bluejays will need this year is Blake Finley. The senior is the top ranked heavyweight in Class 5A. It helps to have a guy like Trevor Blassingame in the room to push Finley every practice. At 138lbs is No.6 ranked Tyler Mahan. Another senior on the team for coach Stevens, Mahan continues to show improvement. Tyler’s brother Kevin is another horse in the stable for coach Stevens. With this many studs in the wrestling room, it’s easy to see why the Bluejays are moving up the rankings. Alex Nelson (120) recently placed 3rd at the Perry Tournament by defeating Seth Graves of Edmond Memorial,

while Andrew Toney pinned his Arkansas City opponent on his way to placing at Perry. Joe Kuruvilla is another exciting wrestler coach Stevens has high expectations for this season. The Bluejays will begin to climb in the dual and individual rankings now that football is over. Look for Finley, Howard and Nelson to lead the way for Guthrie as they look to make it to the state tournament and add their name to a long list of state placers and possible state champions.

Guthrie Football

Guthrie Finishes 14-0 To Win Class 5A Gold

The Guthrie Bluejays recently completed their perfect 14-0 season and claimed the Class 5A gold ball with a 51-21 win over McAlester. Led by VYPE Top 100 selection and Oklahoma Mr. Football finalist Kai Callins the Bluejays were dominant in every phase of the game this year. Offensively Guthrie averaged 43.6 points per game this season and failed to score at least 35 points just four times. While the Bluejays offense was stellar the team truly hung its hat on its defense. In

the regular season only one team scored 21 points or more against Guthrie’s stingy defensive unit. Overall the Bluejays allowed an average of just 9.6 points per game this year. After finishing the regular season 10-0 Guthrie started its path to gold with a 40-3 win over Chickasha in the first round of the playoffs. The second round saw Guthrie lock horns with Shawnee, and in a game that came down to the wire, the Bluejays came out on top with a 23-21 victory. Guthrie moved on from the hard-fought second round win to beat Collinsville 45-13 in the semifinals and punch their ticket to the championship game. In the finals Callins simply took over, rushing for 234 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries. Leading the way on defense and helping Guthrie force four turnovers were Kelyn Hinds and Zonte Veasley.
