"Take Me Out to the Ball Game" On the high school level, baseball is a seven-inning battle until the final out is recorded. It’s with that learning curve approach the McAlester Buffaloes continue strides toward a Class 5A postseason run in May.

With a rotation of pitching options combined with situational hitting from a lineup that includes four to six sophomores game to game, the Buffs continue to take each game pitch by pitch.

Four seniors including Kabyn Kelley (C), Mackey Eales (3B), Andrew McBride (OF) and Eddie Zdeb (Utility) lead the Buffs of coach Justin Bond drive toward the regional tournament and a walk-off win.

Third year starting pitcher Mason Ross is joined on the mound by Deon Smith, Brandon Rutledge, Noah Cook, Harley Martin plus Jett Wood and Ryan Kelly to help manage inning and pitch counts throughout the season.

“Mackey is our leadoff hitter and keeps things loose in the clubhouse while Kabyn keeps the lineup in order from his position behind the plate,” said Bond, now in his third season as head coach. “Andrew is that competitor that you want in your lineup that will lay it on the line everyday and Eddie will do whatever it takes to make a winning difference.”

Cameron Green, J.T. Thomas along with Conner Stewart and Dillon Stobaugh also continue taking their cuts at the plate while making defensive plays.

Not in uniform or the daily lineup, Bond commends the efforts of another senior team manager Cheyenne Briggs. “You don’t have to ask her for anything, Cheyenne does the all the little things that really add up.”

JACE BLAYLOCK - RED OAK HIGH SCHOOL best,” confirmed Blaylock. “I want people to know they can depend upon me, that if I say I’ll do it, you can’t take it to the bank as a done deal.” Growing up in a small rural community like Red Oak where everyone knows everybody is a guiding light for Blaylock appreciates. “They know what you had for breakfast before you get to school,” laughed Blaylock. “But knowing that someone is always watching with an eagle eye is something I cherish and why I strive to be a leader by example.”

Southeast Oklahoma’s basketball talents proved to be among Oklahoma’s best as 13 teams reached the Big House, site of the OSSAA state championships where nine of the baker’s dozen advanced to the semifinals of their respective classes. The Class B boys field included three teams from the Rock Island conference as Kinta and LeFlore joined top ranked Red Oak in the semifinals. Sparked by the play of tournament MVP Brad Davis in the final quarter, the Eagles rallied from a 13-point deficit to defeat Kinta and advance to the championship where Red Oak lifted the gold ball with a 63-42 win over Leedey in the finals. Red Oak’s Lady Eagles also reached “Championship Saturday” at the Big House advancing to the finals only to bring home the silver ball runner-up trophy losing to Lomega in the title game. Rattan and Stuart were among the Class A boys field while Class 2A included both teams from Wright City along with Talihina boys and Latta’s Lady Panthers. The Golden Tigers and Lady Jax reached second round action before losing to the eventual champion while Atoka met the same fate in the Class 3A boys tournament. Broken Bow knocked out top ranked Fort Gibson in first round action of the Class 4A girls tournament while Ada picked up a first round win in boys play. Both the Lady Savages and Cougars saw their seasons end losing to the eventual state champ. State Champions Class B: Red Oak (B) Lomega (G) Class A: Ft. And according to Booth, truer words were never spoken.

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard… Nine simple words that carry big meaning in defining traits of a champion. It’s these words that Red Oak junior Jace Blaylock lives by everyday whether on or off the fields of competition. “Character isn’t something you build in a single day,” said Blaylock, “ and it’s the little things that set you apart. Everyone in his or her own unique way builds your definition of character by what you do on a daily basis.” Qualities that include hard work, trustworthiness and leadership are traits that Red Oak coach Trey Booth admires about his point guard on this season’s state champion basketball team. “He’s what I call a glue guy – not the headline player or box score stats leader,” said Booth, “Jace is that one special player that every championship team needs that makes everyone around him better on and off the court.” Described by his teammates as the go-to-guy that will always tell you like it is, Blaylock wouldn’t want it any other way. “Nothing is better in the long run than the plain and simple truth. Sometimes it hurts but you know it’s for the

“Jace cares, plain and simple, about making things better for everybody,” said Booth. “He cares about our program as well as the younger kids. He’s first to the gym and last to leave and goes out of his way to show the little kids how to become a champion the Red Oak way through hard work in everything you do.” Blaylock points to the influences of his dad (Kenny) and grandfather (Loyd Nixon) as role models that left footprints in the sand to him to try and follow. “They both are 100% dedicated to whatever task they face no matter how difficult the situation,” said Blaylock while blinking away tears of appreciation. “They never ask for anything in return. My dad and grandfather taught me its far better to give than to receive.” Booth had just one thing to say when asked for words that best describe the influence of Blaylock. “Champion…it’s a word that’s easy to say but hard to attain and Jace earned his the old fashion way by hard work to not only make himself better but through his actions centered around a team first attitude, he makes all of us winners, young and old alike.” While the final chapters of success are still to be recorded, the hard-nosed dedicated actions of Jace Blaylock will lead no doubt leave a legacy for others to follow on their paths to becoming a champion and continuing to prove that Character Counts.

an AP/Honor class schedule that includes Chemistry and her favorite subject in school, English.

Entering her junior season, McAlester golfer Madalyn Nix is taking “dead aim” on earning her third consecutive trip to the Class 5A state golf tournament in May.

“I love to read as well as write my own stories,” admitted Nix. “For me, reading relieves the pressure of day to day competition.

After qualifying individually the past two seasons, Nix, whose first experience at golf came at age four on her grandfather’s PuttPutt course, is now spending endless extra hours on the practice range or traversing the McAlester Country Club course seeking to improve her game. It’s that dedication to daily improvement is what impresses Lady Buffs coach Jenni McMurry. “She’s self-motivated and driven to improve every day,” notes McMurry. “Madalyn is always on the course or on the practice green making herself a better player.” Blocking out all the distractions on the course is no challenge for Nix, citing a focus on playing a particular type of golf ball every round. “Every golfer has their superstitions and that goes for me too,” smiled Nix. “I have this thing about playing golf with anything other than white colored golf balls. It’s kind of weirds me out when another golfer in the group plays with the yellow or pink colored balls. ” In addition to her low scores on the golf course, “Mady” ranks near the top of her junior class fashioning a 4.15 GPA from 8

One of just three members of the girls golf team at McAlester, Nix wants her teammates Johanne Kalin and Mahrle Angel to also be among the 5A state tournament field when the championships are played the first week in May at Chickasaw Pointe in Kingston. “It would be really nice and lift a little of the pressure of being there alone,” Nix said. Center Court Talent McAlester Tennis Preparing To Serve Another Trip To State Trails from the tennis courts in McAlester to the OKC Tennis Center, site of the Class 5A state championship, will be well traveled by the Buffaloes tennis teams as head coach Chad Waller’s squads have what it takes to compete against the best in Class 5A. Experience returns aplenty on the boys side of the net including a trio of seniors Eric Borengasser, Sam DeNike and Taeam Kang joining junior netter Ben Domingue returning state tournament experience. Coming of a sixth place finish in 2015, Borengasser has a unique opportunity to become a 4-time state qualifier this spring playing #1 singles while teammate Sam DeNike looks to return to state bringing a strong challenge at #2 singles. Kang and Domingue bring a strong serve and volley game at #1 doubles after reaching the 5A tournament last year. Adding to the talented ladder is the juniorsophomore combo of Layne Braswell and Manning White at #2 doubles.

Young and eager to prove their skills describes the outlook on the girls court with a lineup that includes five juniors and one freshman. Kieara Johnson plays #1 singles with what Waller describes a fundamental game as strong as any other player in Class 5A while Molly Ervin’s competitiveness gives the Lady Buffs junior a 1-up advantage. The #1 doubles combination of Shannequia Gipson and Cydney Linehan return experience as the pair played #2 doubles last year

as sophomores. Junior netter Mackenzie Brown joins freshman Abigail Ervin at #2 doubles this spring. Proof of Buffaloes’ tennis talent pool is evident as McAlester was the only non-private school to get both teams ranked and invited to compete in the Class 5A East vs. West showdown, a state tournament eye opening event. McAlester also will be one of the teams to beat as the Buffs travel to Duncan April 21-22 for the OSSAA Public School State Tennis Championships.

Fast as Fast Can "B"... Brayden and Bailye Adding to the Buffs point total is sophomore speedster Jacob Amos, who also competes in the 100 meters and long jump.

Klusak and Pratt Anchor Hopes for McAlester Track When Trent Turner took the reigns of McAlester’s track program, he knew two things about its current state. “I knew this would be a work in progress, day by day, because of our youth and inexperience,” said Turner. “And of course, I knew about Brayden and Bailye.” McAlester’s duo of Klusak and Pratt return as the foundation of track success, now and in the future. Junior sprinter Brayden Klusak qualified in three events last year as a sophomore and is positioning for a Class 5A medal stand showing running in the 100m, 200m as well as sprint relays. Klusak currently holds the state’s fastest time in the 100 meters recording a 10.64 effort. “Brayden IS the eye test, 20-20,” said Turner. “He’s 6-3, 195 pounds of pure muscle and athletic ability.”

Juniors Sean Bryant, Braden Parker, Mike Redway, Zachary Goodwin and Parker Elliott along with sophomores Eli Martin, Matt Ratton, and Bryce Singleton plus the efforts of freshmen A.J. Martin and Cody Norris give a positive look to the future. Sophomore Bailye Pratt returns from her freshman season where she reached the finals of the Class 5A long jump competition with a determination to also reach the 5A state medal stand. “Bailye is a determined competitor,” notes Turner. “She wears her spirit on her face and will always give you her best.”

Sydney Youngblood Durant HS – Senior

Sydney Youngblood Tees Off Searching A FORE-Peat Winning golf’s grand slam is a rare accomplishment for members of the LPGA as well as the PGA tour. Just as rare is the accomplishment waiting down the fairway for Sydney Youngblood as the Durant senior enters the OSSAA Class 5A state championship series in search of a fourth consecutive first place finish when play unfolds at Chickasaw Pointe Golf Club and become only the third golf in Oklahoma high school girls golf history to accomplish such a feat. From the first time she picked up a club at age two, Youngblood has felt at home with a golf club in her hands whether on the practice range, chipping green or standing on the tee box waiting for the starter’s call. “I knew I was in my comfort zone when I started playing my national competitions at age 10,” recalled Youngblood. “My dad and grandpa got me started and then after watching Annika Sorenstam on TV, I was hooked and ready to take dead aim at being the best golfer I could be.” Becoming the best golfer on the course may be an understatement for Youngblood, who signed a national letter of intent to play college golf at the University of Oklahoma. In addition to her practice time and sharpening her touch on the greens admitting her favorite club is a 6-iron, Youngblood is focusing on an improved mental approach to each round to stay at the top of the leaderboard. “My mental game has been my weakness lately so I’ve been working on that part most of all.” Youngblood’s attention to details is evidence off the course as well proven by her 3.95 GPA amidst her class schedule filled with honors classes including AP Statistics and AP Literature. Since winning her first 5A championship in 2013, an event that Youngblood calls her greatest sport moment, no one else has been atop the leaderboard at tournament’s end. So, with her game plan on target, Youngblood enters the 2016 championship seeking the perfect way to complete an already successful high school career. “Honestly, I try not to think about it, but to win the state title for a fourth straight year would be real honor for me especially considering it’s only happened twice before.”

Stephen Cook is a senior at Atoka High School where he’s a member of the varsity track team. As a junior Cook placed 2nd at state in the long jump going 21’1.5” and was on the 4X100 relay team that finished with a time of 3:28, good enough to place second. Cook also qualified for state in the 4X100 relay. This season he has a high jump of 6’4” and according to Atoka head coach Chet Braudrick both high jumpers are clearing big numbers.

“Both high jumpers have cleared 6’4” and both have beat their long jumps as well. Cook along with several of his teammates are all allstate contenders in one or more events this year.” Cook also plays football and basketball for the Wampus Cats and has plans to continue his track career in college. “After high school I plan on going to college and running track. My favorite event is the long jump.” In his free time Cook enjoys playing video games and said he will remember his friends and all the fun they had at Atoka after graduation. “I would like to say thanks to coach Braudrick for all the time and effort he has put into me and my team,” said Cook. For his dedication to Atoka High School and the varsity track team, Stephen Cook is the Atoka Area Athlete of the Month.

Every year a new crop of spring sports athletes step up to lead their teams to victory. Here are a few Atoka High School athletes to watch this spring. Boys Soccer Brycen Bass – Goalkeeper Senior Brycen Bass is a first year player, but has the talent to tend goal and make a difference for the Wampus Cats. Bass brings size and agility to net giving the team someone with the ability to reach the tough shots on goal. Chris Pugh – Forward Senior and team captain Chris Pugh returns as a four-year starter and was the only scoring threat for Atoka last season. Pugh brings experience and the desire to get this team on the winning track. Keelyn Harkey – Defender

Harkey is the future of Atoka soccer. The young athlete was described by head coach Chris Wingo as a, “future star” for Atoka. Maybe the light from that star begins to shine this season. Other players to look for on the boys soccer team include Brandon Thomas-Midfielder, Aaron Lewis-Defender, Zachary Finch-Defender and D.J. Henson-Forward. Track Danielle Granger – Discus This underclassman has all the tools to be special. In fact according to head coach Chet Braudrick, she’s already a special athlete for Atoka High School. She placed 2nd at state with a throw of 116’3” and coach Braudrick said she’s already passed that mark this season.

Nick Gipson Nick Gipson – Discus Nick Gipson placed 5th at state as a freshman with a throw of 135’9” and coach Braudrick said Gipson is throwing well this season. Expectations for Gipson are high as he looks to put Atoka on the podium again this year. Houston Bowen – Long Jump, Relays Senior Houston Bowen grabbed gold as a junior in the long jump last year with an effort of 21’2”. Bowen is looking to improve that number and repeat as champion in 2016. He’s also a member of the 4X400 relay team and the 4X100 relay team. But don’t sleep on his ability to high jump as well. He’s already hit a jump at 6’4” this season.

With Oklahoma All-VYPE team and that experience under her belt this year Young is up to his old Matlock is back this year and tricks and has the Lumberjax should be a favorite to do well at back on pace for another state. A top 30 finish isn’t out of amazing season. the question, in fact just a nine stroke improvement would have done that last year. Look for Dalyn Burrell: Wright City Matlock to have a great finish to Baseball – Burrell is another her senior season. player who was named to the All-VYPE team after last season. Burrell is a fantastic athlete Wade Young: Wright City and can flat out go. You want a Baseball – It seems like we player that will bring solid play have been talking about this with a little bit of flash, Burrell is kid for a long time, and we your man. really have. Young has been a standout ever since he stepped

time last year and helped Valliant to a slow pitch state title. This year Valliant is back at it and having another amazing season. If Valliant is going to win the whole thing again Bacon will need to have an outstanding April and May.

DEXTRY MAGANA – IDABEL SLOW PITCH

Anna Bolen

“Dextry has learned to keep books and stats to help her understand situations and positions on the field,” Idabel slow pitch coach Stephanie Armstrong said. “She asks us every day, ‘what can I do to help the team? What can I do to improve?’”

Daryl Black

Magana is the epitome of a hard worker. She works as hard as she can every day, and never complains. Coach Armstrong said she never has to ask Magana to hustle or work harder. Often times, Magana has to remind her teammates to hustle and motivates her teammates to match her intensity. However, Magana is not always in an intense mode.

Warriors to Watch - Idabel's Spring Athletes Spring athletes at Idabel begin to hit their stride

Slow Pitch It has been nine years since the Idabel Lady Warriors have played slow pitch softball. None of the girls on the current roster have played slow pitch before. However, the Lady Warriors have a young roster that gets better each time they take the field. With two seniors, one junior, four sophomores and nine freshmen, this team has a bright future ahead of it. Lady Warrior coach Stephanie Armstrong highlighted two players from her team to watch. Daryl Black, Freshman, Pitcher: Daryl Black has stepped up big for coach Armstrong this season, accepting the challenge of learning how to pitch. Black has

been a great example for her teammates, both on and off the field. Black will accept any task given to her, and will do anything to help her teammates. Outside of slow pitch, she is extremely involved at Idabel. Black is a varsity cheerleader, a member of the band and is learning to play catcher for the fast pitch team. Coach Armstrong said of the young pitcher: “This young lady is such a hard worker, she will do anything that you ask of her,” Armstrong said. Anna Bolen, Freshman, Second Base/ Outfield: Anna Bolen, like Daryl Black, has stepped up into a major role for the Lady Warriors. Bolen can play both infield and outfield. Bolen is a quiet leader who leads by example. Bolen is the most consistent hitter on the Lady Warriors roster. She has reached base in every game this season, and leads the team in hits. Bolen is not a power hitter, but a consistent contact hitter. Bolen is heavily involved in FFA and is a member of the fast pitch team.

in the win category as a pitcher. Allen already has three wins on the mound. At the plate, Allen is equally as dangerous. He currently holds a batting average above .600, proving he can hit just as well as he can pitch. Allen will be an instrumental player for the Warriors as they close out the back half of the season. Make sure to keep an eye on L.A. both on the mound and at the plate. Seth Shelton, Senior, Pitcher/Third Baseman: Seth Shelton is another talented pitcher for coach Austin’s team. Shelton isn’t far behind Allen in the win category, as Shelton has two wins on the mound. Shelton is the cleanup hitter for the Warriors. Shelton’s bat will be incredibly important to the Warriors down the stretch. He proved this in the win over No. 6 Rattan, when he hit a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning to help secure the victory. Both Allen and Shelton will be vital to the success of Idabel, both on the mound and at the plate.

Dextry Magana is only a freshman at Idabel, but she is already leaving a strong impression on her coaches and teammates. This season is Magana’s first season playing softball, and she has done as much as she can to learn the game.

Coach Armstrong said of Bolen: “She may be the smallest player on the team with the biggest heart,” Armstrong said. “She never complains, it is always the attitude what do you need me to do today coach.”

APRIL 2016

Idabel Warrior baseball has really made a turn around in 2016. The Warriors only won one game last season and was ranked near the bottom among teams from Southeast Oklahoma. This season, with the same kids, the Warriors have already won seven games, including county wins over Valliant and Smithville, along with a big win over No. 6 Rattan. With that win over Rattan, the Warriors moved their record to 7-9. The Warriors have the month of April, and some of May, to continue to find their groove. Coach Austin told VYPE about two of his players to keep an eye on. Lloynell Allen, Senior, Pitcher/ Center Fielder: Also known as L.A., Allen is leading the Warriors

“This young lady is such a joy to be around,” Armstrong said. “She always has the team smiling or laughing. You have to meet her to understand the bond and leadership she has with this team.” Off the field, Magana brings the same work ethic, as she is involved in numerous school activities. Magana is a member of the Student Council, volunteers to help with blood drives and Relay For Life and is an honor roll student who takes AP courses. Anything Magana can do to help out her fellow Warriors or the Idabel community, she will do. Magana’s work ethic on and off the field, and her dedication to the Idabel Warrior community makes her the Idabel Character Counts Athlete of the Month.
