As a varsity football and basketball player for Glenpool High School, Colton Kane has learned the value of being a dependable teammate and what it means to work with teammates towards a common goal. As a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Kane has learned to take pride in his heritage and what that means to him as a student-athlete. “It means a great deal to me to be a part of the Muscogee (Creek) family. I have a lot of pride in the Creek Nation,” said Kane. Only a junior, Kane has impressed the coaches at Glenpool with his ability to lead and help others. At Glenpool High School Kane has joined a leadership group that nurtures young studentathletes to become future leaders of the community. “I’m part of a leadership class that I

take with my football coach.” Kane is a member of the Bird Clan and his families’ heritage comes from his father’s family. “I am from the Bird Clan and I get my heritage from my dads side of the family. Being a member of the Mvskoke Creeks has taught me to never give up and never quit even when times get hard.” And that ability to push through adversity is why Kane has become such a valuable asset to Glenpool High School and to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Continuing his education is something Kane is looking forward to in the future. “Today being a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation gives me a few more offers of classes I can take and they can also help pay for some of my school in the future.” Life as a student-athlete and Muscogee (Creek) citizen has left Kane full of great memories growing up in Oklahoma. “The most memorable part about going to high school would probably be the friends that I have made and knowing that they will be my friends for the rest of my life.”

Maya West Broken Arrow How long have you been involved with FCA? Since the beginning of my sophomore year. Who influenced you? I saw it represented on club day, and as soon as we saw it, a bunch of the other cheerleaders and I signed up! How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? The meetings always boost my spirits in the mornings, and I always leave happier than I come. It also helped me find people to build Godly relationships with. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? My beliefs help me keep a positive attitude. It can be hard sometimes, but when I focus on God, positive vibes come easily. What is your favoriate Bible verse and why? “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34. I love this verse because it is a constant reminder not to stress over the future, which I tend to do pretty often. It helps me focus on today and the trouble it brings, before worrying about the future. 12

Elite 8 Revisited Former Elite 8 standouts Clay Wilson from Lincoln Christian and Nick Sidorakis from Jenks paused to welcome this new class of Elite 8 players from the Tulsa area. Wilson played four years at Princeton University, while Sidorakis played four years at Oklahoma State University and was a team captain as a senior. VYPE: Clay, what do you remember most about the Elite 8 team you were on in 2010-11? Wilson: I remember the Elite 8 quite well, I had played AAU with both Drew Wilson and Jacob Parker and I knew Jordan Schultz through mutual friends so it was good reconnecting with them. It was a great honor and I’m proud to be an elite 8 alum so to speak. The photo shoot took place at my high school so that’s something I will never forget. While Lincoln has been traditionally praised for their football accolades it was nice to bring some exposure and attention to the basketball team that is on the rise. VYPE: What about you Nick? You were on the very first Elite 8 team in 2006-07. Sidorakis: The first thing that comes to mind is the talent. There was a lot of talent within that group and looking back I’m fortunate to have had the opportunity to compete against such high caliber athletes. I still keep in touch with Derrick Lewis and see Ken Holdman from time to time. VYPE: Clay, that was a fun class we had in 2010-11. Wilson: It was a great honor and I’m proud to be an Elite 8 alum so to speak. The photo shoot took place at my high school so that’s something I will never forget. While Lincoln has been traditionally praised for their football accolades it was nice to bring some exposure and attention to the basketball team that is on the rise.

VYPE: Nick, we heard you got married recently? Sidorakis: I recently got married to Hunter Peterson (Sidorakis) on October 17th of 2015. She was a 2007 graduate that played basketball for Jenks then went on to break records at Rogers State University in Claremore (I like bragging on her). We plan to have kids but that’s for a later discussion. Right now we’re just enjoying the adventure and I look forward to doing life with her.

Sidorakis: I am working in the commercial insurance industry as an Insurance Broker/Risk Consultant. My focus is mainly toward construction, manufacturing, and hospitality, but have knowledge in other industries too. I’m slowly but surely learning more and more about the energy side, which I find interesting. I enjoy what I do because I get to interact and form a relationship with business owners and company risk managers. My ultimate goal is that my clients see me as an asset to their business. Not to mention it’s another form of competition in an industry that’s ever-changing, which makes you “keep your head on a swivel.” (laughs) My hobbies consist of playing in basketball and men’s softball leagues around Tulsa. I really enjoy golfing as long as I’m not snap hooking my drives. I attend Life Church in South Tulsa and serve on the Host Team.

VYPE: Clay, what are you up to these days? Wilson: I graduated this past spring and I currently play professional basketball in Germany. My hobbies include reading, learning the German language, traveling the world, and of course practicing basketball. After my playing days are over I would like to get into collegiate coaching. VYPE: And you Nick? What takes up all of your time besides being married?

THE “DRIVEN” ATHLETES OF THE MONTH Trenton Lieurance - Broken Arrow High School Trenton Lieurance is a junior at Broken Arrow High School and is a member of the varsity wrestling team. Lieurance wrestles heavyweight and has worked hard for the success he has enjoyed this season after being a state placer last year. During the Joe Zamora/Skyler Holman Broken Arrow Open, Lieurance took top honors by defeating Tyler Jay of Sapulpa by fall. Earlier in the season Lieurance placed 2nd at the Sand Springs Invitational after beating Dom Pipes of Sand Springs, Brett Bridges of Ponca City and Nate Thompson of Sperry to go to the finals. According to Owrestle.com Lieurance is the No.1 ranked heavyweight in Class 6A heading into dual state and the state tournament. “I’ve worked extremely hard to be where I am. I’ve had some

setbacks, but I’ve pushed through them. I’m always putting in extra work after practice just to be better than everyone else. Going into duals and state I feel very confident I’ve trained too hard to get beat and with God on my side, no one is going to stop me,” said Lieurance. Head coach Shawn Jones said the looked good and coming into the start of the season the staff was expecting several guys to have big years including Lieurance. “We are returning the most points from the 2015 state tournament in Class 6A. Our goals are set, we are ready to go and excited about this season. We have several guys to watch including Blake Warren, Joey Hall, Andrew Evans, Tejuan Daniels, Blake Mattioda, Isaiah Page, Skyler Haynes, Tyler Lawley, Brady Mattida, and Trenton Lieurance.” For his commitment to continuing the great wrestling tradition at Broken Arrow and for his dedication to being a great student-athlete, Trenton Lieurance is the Driven Athlete of the Month.

Broken Arrow Young Guns - The Future The Broken Arrow wrestling program doesn’t rebuild, it reloads. Head coach Shawn Jones has consistently coached his team to be a contender at dual state and individual state. A big reason is the underclassmen that grow up in the wrestling room, patiently waiting their turn to make their mark on the program. Here are four guys poised to become the next generation of great wrestlers at Broken Arrow. Gavin Potter: Freshman One of the guys in the room with a tall ceiling, Gavin Potter continues to show improvement with every match. “Gavin has wrestled varsity all year. He has made great improvements as the year has progressed. He has a winning record in a tough weight class. A tall rangy kid with a big frame, he has competed at 170lbs for the Tigers. Was the quarterback for the freshman football team. He’s a great athlete that is going to do nothing but improve on a daily basis. We are excited about his

future,” said coach Jones. Zach Marcheselli: Freshman Its crazy to think, but Zach Marscheselli is only a freshman and is at a level that some don’t reach until their junior or senior seasons. “Very mature and ready to compete for a State Championship this year. Wrestles 182lbs, and has only lost a couple of matches. Hustles around, has great offense on his feet and can attack and score points while in the top position. Zach is also a football player, playing linebacker and receiver,” said coach Jones. Caleb Wise: Sophomore Caleb Wise placed 3rd at the Joe Zamora/Skyler Homan BA Open, only losing to teammate Blake Mattioda in the semifinals.

placements. Great wrestler with a deep skill set, competing at 145lbs for the Tigers and ready for the remainder of the season,” said coach Jones. Brady Mattioda: Sophomore This sophomore placed 3rd at the Joe Zamora.Skyler Holman BA Open making it to the semifinals where he was beat by teammate Tajuan Daniels. “Brady is a two-year starter and was one match away from going to the state tournament as a freshman. Has made vast improvements, and looking forward to a big finish. He wrestles at 126lbs for the Tigers. His brother Blake Mattioda is also a varsity starter and is having a great season. Brady is a 4.0 student, and it shows when he competes,” said coach Jones.

“Caleb is a two-year starter, was a 2015 State Qualifier as a freshman. He is having a great sophomore season with a winning record and several tournament FEBRUARY 2016

Rodriguez and Chargois have teamed up to create their version of the twin towers this season forcing opponents to adjust to their size. Nile Felton and Mo Garcia with guard Jamoree Banks are all making big contributions this year. Also look for Equann Brown, CJ Moore, Jordan Kelley, Ahjae Johnson, Jordan Flood, Justin Harris and N’Kiel Jameron. The Redskins have the talent and experience to go far in the state tournament under the leadership of coach Garcia and assistant coaches Steve Geary, Rickey Peaker and Mark Ritter.

With basketball season approaching tournament time we took a closer look at the field to determine which teams have the best shot at not only making the playoffs but winning a state title. GIRLS Sapulpa Lady Chieftains ODDS 2/1 Led by the tandem of Brice Calip and Chelsea Dungee, the Lady Chieftains have a great shot at bringing home the gold ball this year and ousting two-time defending champs, Broken Arrow. Dungee and Calip are averaging 18 points per game, but look for x-factor Isabella Bacon who is hitting 55% of her three point shots this season. Broken Arrow Lady Tigers ODDS 3/1 It’s hard not to make the back-toback state champions the favorites. They certainly have the talent and coaching to take care of business. Led by Alexis Gaulden and Aysia Evans the Lady Tigers could make history being the first team to threepeat in Class 6A since the class was formed in 1996. Collinsville Lady Cardinals ODDS 5/1 And here is where the controversy starts. Collinsville is ranked No.2 in Class 5A, behind East Central. So why do we have them over their Cardinal rivals? Mallory Vaughn. Her ability to get to the basketball and control the paint is the best in Class 5A. Brittany Kickapoo adds another dimension to the team with her ability to score.

East Central Cardinals ODDS 6/1 No one knows more about getting to the finals than coach Samy Mack. He’s led the Lady Cardinals to multiple state tournaments and the players would love nothing more than to get that gold ball back to East Central. Their last state title came in 2007. Owasso Lady Rams ODDS 10/1 Mya Bhinhar leads the Lady Rams averaging nearly 13 points per game with teammates Terryn Milton and Leiloni Culley averaging close to 10 points per contest. The trio can get hot and this young squad could make some noise. BOYS Memorial Chargers ODDS 2/1

Tulsa Top 5: What Are The Odds? what could be back-to-back state titles. No surprise the Braves are one of the favorites. Victory Christian Conquerors ODDS 4/1

Another Class 4A team, Victory Christian has put together a great season and is ranked No.3. From the gridiron to the court Keats Calhoon continues to lead the charge for the Conquerors. This season Calhoon will pass 1,000 points as a basketball player after passing 10,000 yards throwing in football. Union Redskins ODDS 7/1

Looking for a dangerous team to get behind? Then look no further than the Union Redskins. Adrian Rodriguez brings a ton of experience and talent to the floor. Add players like Nile Felton, CJ Moore and Jamoree Banks and you have one dangerous group of players looking to upset the apple cart. The knock on the Redskins will be the absence of Ethan Chargois. Chargois could miss most of the playoffs with a leg injury.

Basketball is all about the matchups and Memorial has the players to own most matchups. Caleb Nero is averaging 21 points per game, while teammates Kobe Rose and Derek Guest are averaging 13 and 11 points respectively. Lets not forget the rebounding of Isaiah Thomas with 6.3 boards a game. Their only lose this season came to No.2 Central in Kiefer Trojans Class 4A. ODDS 9/1 Central Braves ODDS 3/1 Ranked No.2 in Class 4A the Central Braves have shown they can compete with anyone in the state. One of the states top recruits and most prolific scorers, Elijah Landrum is leading this team to

The Trojans are on a roll this season beating everyone that steps on the court. Currently ranked No.4 in Class 2A the Trojans are led by Lense Ramey averaging 27 points a game, while fellow senior Kyle Howard adds 16.5 points a game. Do they have what it takes to knock out Preston, Pawnee and Wewoka? Guess we’ll find out. FEBRUARY 2016

Young Trojans Show Promise

Every great high school program depends on a solid feeder system and for Jenks wrestling that feeder program comes under the direction of club President Jason Hammons and a talented coaching staff that includes Chase Mattison, Tony Wilson, Lyle Engles, Dylan Garcia and Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee Larry Wilkey. First year wrestler Alberto Moreno is very strong for an eight year-old. Moreno is also one of the best listeners in the room, and he excels in both practice and competitions. “To me, as a coach, Alberto is the kind of kid that makes my job easy. He is very well rounded on the mat. He has a great stand from bottom position, and powerful half-nelson from top. Alberto will continue

Alberto Moreno to get better and we are all excited to see his talents develop,” said coach Chase Mattison. Achievements: 2nd place, Novice Nationals, 2016 Caleb Doenges is 10 years old and is in his first year of wrestling. Doenges is a quick study and is one the most athletic kids in our room. “He loves to compete and it shows through his speed, balance, strength, and focus. Owasso Youngsters: Lambs to Lions The Owasso Rams have a plethora of young, talented wrestlers coming up through the Owasso Youth Wrestling program. With state champions and state placers in the wrestling room, the future for the Ram program appears to be in good hands. Head coach Derek Harvey mentioned more kids than we could include, so we picked out these three as the wrestlers to watch. Chad Herbert – 85lbs “Chad is a very hard worker and very coachable kid. He brings a hard working, positive attitude to the room and is a role model for the younger kids,” said coach

Derek Harvey. Herbert was the 2014 Novice State champion and the USJNC & Greco Roman state champion. DUTCH GIRLS BASKETBALL The Dutch girls are off to a good start in the 2015-2016 season with an 11-2 record. They had runner-up tournament finishes at both the Vinita and Stroud tournaments. They followed up those by winning the Siloam Springs Tournament. Junior, Kennedy Cox led the way with 20 points in the championship game vs. Rogers, AR.

Team captain, Senior, Hagan Gross said, “Since this is our last year in SPC we are staying focused on our goal, and are hoping to win the whole thing for the last time. We feel that we have played good competition preparing us for SPC. We won the Siloam Springs tournament and finished runner up in Vinita and Stroud. There have been great leaders on the team in years past, so I am trying to do things like they have.”

Leading the way statistically is Junior C.J. Thompson, who is averaging 19 points a game, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Joining him in having a double digit scoring average is fellow Junior Nathan Stolper, with 12 points per game, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Also having a strong season is Sophomore Corbin Daniels scoring at an eight-point clip with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

DUTCH BOYS SOCCER

After finding relative success in seven friendly matches against local club teams, the Holland Hall boys (5-0-2) returned from the Christmas break to start Southwest Preparatory Conference play.

DUTCH GIRLS SOCCER

The first opportunity to play a high school team in winter soccer occurred on Saturday, January 9, at Casady School in Oklahoma City. The north wind, scattered snow flurries, and temperatures in the mid-20’s made for a memorable contest between the two teams in the state involved in high school winter soccer. Though both teams created chances, the final score was 0:0. The rematch will occur in Tulsa in early February.

It has been a growing season for the Dutch girls soccer team according to coach Stephanie Pounds. In SPC conference matches, they have been competitive, losing a couple close games; one to Oakridge 2-1, (goal scored by Addie Wallace) and then to Fort Worth Country Day 1-0. “We continue to work hard so that we can build for the future seasons. We are a young team with many underclassmen that we hope to continue to grow and develop” Zoe Siftar and Lauren Bowman, both freshmen, have stepped up big for this season and have offered to develop their skills as a goalkeeper.

Get your Dutch Athletic Updates at: http://www.hollandhall.org/athletics

Freshman Gabby Gregory is leading the team in both points (19.5) and rebounds (9.2).

DUTCH BOYS BASKETBALL

The traveling continued over the weekend of January 15-16, when the Dutch headed to Arlington, Texas, where they defeated the Oakridge School Owls, 2:0. Saturday’s match pitted Holland Hall against the defending conference champions from the Episcopal School of Dallas. Playing on the artificial turf of Jean and Jerry Jones Family Stadium, the visiting Dutch found themselves down two goals early in the second half. A well-placed goal by Captain Jaelon Woodard got Tulsans back into the match, but they could not create the equalizer.

The Dutch Boys Basketball team is showing improvement as the team gains experience as the season progresses. After the first week of SPC ball, their record is 6-9 overall, with a 0-2 mark in conference.

“The team is competing hard and staying close in most games, just struggling to finish out those close games,” according to coach Brandon Maddux. “Hopefully our youth is gaining valuable experience from this and it only makes them better.”
