On or off the court Taiah Sanders is always focused on being the best teammate and friend she can be. As a student at Beggs High School academics are very important to Sanders. Currently she carries a 3.8 grade point average and is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Oklahoma Indian Student Honor Society. All while playing three sports in her senior year. Sanders is a member of the Wind Clan with ties dating back to the 1800’s. “I am a member of the Wind clan, I am also the great, great, greatgranddaughter of Samuel Checote, whom was elected the first principal chief of MCN after the Civil War in 1867. I am proud to be a Mvskoke Creek citizen because our ancestors had to overcome many years of adversity for future generations to have it better than they did,” said Sanders. “My heritage has taught me to be strongwilled and independent. I am able to stay focused on my goals to achieve success and to always stay humble.”
The support offered to the citizens of the Muscogee Creek Nation is something Sanders is proud to talk about. Especially when it comes to educating its people. “They offer lots of support to me, as well as other citizens wanting to further their education. They have tons of scholarships to apply for. I have been blessed to be able to receive tribal grants and incentives for my concurrent enrollment. I am getting a jumpstart on pursuing my degree in Optometry. Hopefully in the future I will be able to give back to my tribe,” said Sanders Sanders admits her family plays a huge role in her life and her success on and off the court, field or track. “My family is also a big contributing factor to my success in school and my sports. They have always had 100% faith in me and in what I wanted to do with my future. Not only is getting a scholarship rewarding for me, but to my parents as well. Getting a scholarship shows that the countless hours of extra practice, traveling to showcase tournaments, packing up and heading out of state with the rest of my siblings for long stays in a hotel has paid off. I hope it’s just as fulfilling for them as it is for me. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the love and support from my family.”

Raven Watkins - Cascia Hall Michael Harris - Central High Senior point guard Raven Watkins is off to a great start in her last year as a high school basketball player for Cascia Hall. Averaging nearly 15 points a game and 3.0 rebounds, Watkins is benefiting from a summer of hard work in the gym. “Over the summer, I put in a lot of extra hours in the gym. I played competitive AAU basketball and traveled to compete with my team, so all of my time was dedicated and devoted to the gym. Even after school had started this fall, there were days when the gym was open and I would be there every Sunday afternoon to push myself to improve and strengthen my fundamentals,” said Watkins. That drive is seen not only on the court, but in the classroom. “I am a member of the Spanish club, which puts together festivities to celebrate the Hispanic culture and also looks for ways to help the less fortunate in our community. I am also a part of the recycling team (#gogreen), which focuses on green initiatives to promote environmentally friendly activities and awareness. Athletically, besides being a member of the lady commandos basketball team, I plan to join the Lady Commandos track team in the spring of 2016.” Watkins said her teammates mean everything to her and they drive her to go hard every minute she’s on the court. “They are like a family to me, and I would not trade them in for anything.” After high school Watkins plans to earn a degree in Physical Therapy and play basketball at the next level.
The Central Braves boys basketball team is off to a great start this season ranked No.1 in Class 4A. Guard Michael Harris has played great and is helping this team achieve their goals. Coming into the season Harris knew the team would be good, but he also knew the team needed him to become a leader and Harris did just that. Harris is averaging 24.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 5.9 steals per game. “This offseason I stayed in the gym everyday day and every night working on my craft and working on my weaknesses. I just trying to improve my game,” said Harris. Head coach Eli K. Brown III led the Braves to a state title last season, but still saw areas he wanted the team to work improve. “I contribute my great start to the season to my coach for teaching me the importance of the grind, teaching me that you can’t cheat the grind. For telling me these two quotes that I will always remember; “to be great you got to be different” and “you got to know what you want to do to get where you want to go,” but I also contribute some my success to my teammates for staying on me,” said Harris. In his first two years of high school Harris also played football, but he’s now focused on basketball and helping the Braves to back-to-back state titles. “My favorite memory at Central is winning a state championship and how hard we worked to get that state championship. My teammates mean everything to me I really don’t call them my teammates, they are my brothers. I love everyone like they are my brothers. Without them I wouldn’t be the player I am.

VYPE QUAD SQUAD they defeated Mustang, 24-17 and a much-improved Edmond Santa Fe team, 49-30. For the Trojans the path to the title game was equally difficult. In the first round Jenks beat Norman North, 69-34 then faced rival Union in the semifinals with Jenks coming out on top, 33-17 setting up the state finals between to familiar foes. Big plays and momentum can change on any given play, but for that play to come with the opening kickoff was something no one expected. Broken Arrow returner Jordan Davis did an excellent job of fielding the bouncing kick up the middle of the field, when Jenks’ Morgan Thomas stripped the ball and Jenks running back Jordan Curtis was there to make the grab and return it to the two yard line. A few seconds later the Trojans were up, 7-0 after Rueben Thompson’s one yard run.
Jenks grabs fourth straight title over surging Broken Arrow Tigers With 14,020 fans in attendance at H.A. Chapman Stadium and high school football fans watching at home, the Jenks Trojans won their 16th title overall, the 13th under the leadership of Allan Trimble, 35-14 over the Broken Arrow Tigers coached by David Alexander. The two teams had met earlier in the regular season with Broken Arrow pulling out a 35-34 win on the road. That propelled them into the playoffs where
making the halftime score, 16-14. The second half was all Jenks. Dillon Stoner caught a 67-yard pass from record-setter Cooper Nunley giving the Trojans a nine point lead. Thompson added another touchdown run of 7-yards adding to his game total of 117 yards on 24 carries. Nunley was 15 of 24 passing for 285 yards and a touchdown. Senior Carter Nelson scored on a 7-yard run to cap the 16th football title in the programs history. “It was a tremendous effort by our players and coaches. I couldn’t be more proud of what this team accomplished this season,” said coach Trimble.
Thompson rushed for his second touchdown of the night when he busted through the Tiger defense for a 31yard scamper putting Jenks up, 13-0 after a missed extra point. The Tigers did respond in the second quarter with a 63-yard strike from Cade Yeager to Sammy Akem. A Jenks field goal by Sammy Sparks would put Jenks on top, 16-7 but before the half the Tigers answered again with a six yard pass from Yeager to Kort Lewis JANUARY 2016

VYPE We Are Sparta Bixby fights their way to back-toback titles in Class 6AII. By Braden Cox A roller coaster season ended with a bang for Class 6A Division II Bixby High School in a win over Sand Springs, awarding the Spartans their second straight state title. “The win over Sand Springs was huge for our team. Coming back and beating a team 38-28 after they had just shut us out 20-0 three weeks before showed tremendous resolve. The environment was great,” says head coach Loren Montgomery. The year did not look entirely promising for Bixby, as they started off the season with a home loss to Jenks, then weeks later took a beating at the hands of Tulsa’s Booker T. Washington, and were finally shut out by Sand Springs in their last regular season game. However, the Spartans, led by
running back Nic Roller, simply wouldn’t be denied. After playoff wins over Bartlesville and Lawton, Roller and his teammates stormed into the state round for a rematch against the Sandites. The game began with a 13-0 first quarter domination by Bixby as Roller scored the first two touchdowns on carries of 11 and 2 yards, and went to half time with a score of 16-7 in favor of the Spartans. A Sandite resurgence began on a circus play shortly after the game had resumed, as Jacob Taber intercepted a Bixby screen pass at the Spartan 31, returned it to the 20, and while being tackled, flipped the ball to teammate Cruz Desjarlais who took it to the end zone. The comeback continued, as Sand Springs would go on to take a 21-16 lead over the Spartans. It was then that Roller began to steal the show. He capped a 60 yard drive with a goal line touchdown to gain the lead, and with the Spartans holding the ball with 4:42 left to play and a 38-28 lead, carried the ball six straight times to clench the win. Roller finished the game with 164 yards on 37 carries and found the end zone a total of four times. “Going 6-4, nobody picked us to make it out of the first round. The team showed toughness and character, peaked at the right time, and showed a lot of people what Bixby football is about,” said Roller. “Hopefully we can continue the legacy through the younger guys
stepping up next year and win another championship.” While the outcome of the game was not what the Sandites had hoped for, coach Dustin Kinard was still proud of what his young men had accomplished. “This group of seniors just focused on doing their job, and knew the other ten would do the same. During the state game, they never panicked and continued to play until the end.” As the year comes to an end and a full offseason lies just around the corner, Coach Kinard remains hopeful for next season. “We have a good core group returning next year with very high expectations.”

VYPE Lincoln Christian & Heritage Hall Battle for Gold The Lincoln Christian Bulldogs with head coach Darren Melton and the Heritage Hall Chargers with head coach Bret Bogert proved to be the best two teams in Class 3A this year, but only one would be crowned champion. The crowd in Pioneer Stadium at Stillwater High School was electric and ready for what most felt would be a shoot out of two great teams. Heritage Hall came into the game as the defending state champions, while Lincoln Christian was looking to grab their first state title since their win in Class 2A in 2009. The running game of the Chargers and the passing game of the Bulldogs would clash and only one team would come out on top. On that day it was Heritage Hall, 38-14. The Bulldogs and quarterback Micah Wilson got things started with a 12-yard pass to wide receiver Alec Davidson for the games first score. Kicker Pearson Bash nailed the extra point and Lincoln was up, 7-0. Wilson would finish the game with 202 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns. Heritage Hall wasted little time responding as running back Tank Love broke a run of 15-yards into the endzone for a touchdown. Garrett McLaughlin added the extra point and we had a tie game. Love’s touchdown would be the first of five scores in a row for the Chargers. Love finished the game with 217 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Later in the first quarter Charger running back Tevin McDaniel scored on a 65-yard run to give the Chargers a, 14-7 lead. Love’s second touchdown came in the second quarter when he rushed for a 20-yard touchdown before sophomore quarterback Blake Adams threw a five yard touchdown pass to Santana Randle to put the Chargers up, 28-7. The Bulldog defense had forced an early turnover by Davidson as McDaniel caught a short pass from Adams and the Bulldogs turned that into points in the first quarter, but that’s when the Chargers turned up the heat on offense. Heritage kicker McLaughlin would add a 55-yard field goal just before the half to make the score, 31-7. In the third quarter Love broke through the line and scored on a 31 yard run to give the Chargers a 38-7 lead. Wilson connected with Davidson on another 12-yard pass to give the Bulldogs their final score of the game. The
combo of Wilson to Davidson was one of the most prolific combos in high school football this season. Addressing the team after the game was Pastor Willie George of Church on the Move, who said this Lincoln team was “the greatest football team in Lincoln Christian history.” Pastor George could be correct in that statement. Statistically this team was amazing. But rest assured they would trade all of the stats in for one gold ball.

THE “DRIVEN” ATHLETES OF THE MONTH Mason Naifeh - Union High School Senior Mason Naifeh has worked his way to the top of the 113-pound division in Class 6A since he burst on the scene as a freshman. The 2015 6A state runner-up enters the new season as No.1 ranked 113-pounder and is the favorite to bring home a state championship. Naifeh is driven to win on and off the mat.
“Winning drives me to succeed. It’s simple. When I win I just want to keep winning. I’ve lost before and it’s not a feeling I like, so I do everything I can to win both on and off the mat,” said Naifeh. Inspired by the prospect of a promising future and guided by a great role model, Naifeh is ready to take on the challenge of be-
ing the best wrestler he can be and the best person off the mat. “Knowing that I have a bright future ahead of me and I have to prove everyone wrong that said I couldn’t or wouldn’t achieve my goals inspires me. My dad is my role model, he’s a very successful business man. He also always makes sure I’m at my best in every situation,” said Naifeh. His teammates are just as important to his overall success. They push him to succeed. “Having teammates that push you is extremely important, they are what makes you better each and every day. Before every bout I go over the game plan. I’m always thinking about what I’m going to do and I create situations in my head of what I think might happen during the match. I just go out there already knowing that I’m going to dominate and that I’m on a whole other level than my opponent.” College wrestling is certainly on the radar. “My plans after high school is to wrestle in college and study Pre-Med, but I’m still undecided on where I will be attending.”

He also beat rival Union five times as a starter. Offensive coordinator Dub Maddox said of Nunley, “He does things on the field that very few high school quarterbacks can do. The school that picks him up is getting a true competitor.” Nunley was selected to the East All-State team as the 1st team quarterback. JANUARY 2016

Wendy Emerson, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon ellence in orthopedics sports medicine since 19 Sports Medicine and and General Orthopedic Surgery Dr. Wendy Emerson joined Central States Orthopedics in April of 2015 and has brought a wealth of experience to the practice. A graduate of Oral Roberts University in 2000, Dr. Emerson completed medical school in 2005 at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX and her Orthopedic Internship (2006) and Orthopedic Surgery Residency (2010) at The University of Washington in Seattle. Afterwards, Dr. Emerson completed an additional one year Orthopedic Surgery Sports Medicine Fellowship with the TRIA Orthopedic Center in Minneapolis, MN. During her tenure at TRIA, she served as a Team Physician for the Minnesota Twins, the Minnesota Lynx (WNBA), and the Minnesota Wild (hockey).
Now in Tulsa, OK, Dr. Emerson serves as a Team Physician for Central States Orthopedics for Coweta Public Schools. With the switch from professional to high school sports, we took the opportunity to catch up with Dr. Emerson and ask her a few questions about her practice and her work with the Coweta Tigers. VYPE: As a graduate of Oral Roberts University, is it exciting for you to come back to Tulsa as an Orthopedic Physician? Emerson: Yes, very much so! I loved Tulsa during my undergraduate years and was excited to come back. It’s been fun watching Tulsa grow as a metropolitan area but still maintain the close-knit community feel that makes it a great place to live. And it’s wonderful to be closer to my friends and family in the area. To top it off, I’ve been fortunate to become a part of Central States Orthopedics, and am excited to continue my career surrounded by such a great group of people. VYPE: What have you enjoyed the most about your first season with Coweta Tigers?

being on the sidelines was a big part of why I went into Orthopedics, and having that opportunity was one major draw to joining Central States. Getting a chance to do both those things in a community as great as Coweta, one that values it’s school’s athletics so highly, has been really exciting. Every member of the team and coaching staff have been great to work with. When a coaching staff is committed to the health and safety of the athletes, and the athletes, in turn, give 110% each game, it really makes for a great season. I’m counting the days until next season! VYPE: The Coweta Tigers advanced all the way to the 5A semi-finals. What do you see as most important for individual athletes in order for them to have the level of stamina and health necessary to compete in a season that lasts from the beginning of August through early December?
Emerson: Nutrition and adequate rest and recovery are essential. These go hand in hand in maximizing endurance. In fact, nutrition and rest are truly just as important as the workouts themselves.
Another important strategy is to manage the small problems before they become large challenges. Small ankle sprains, muscle strains, etc… have the opportunity to either go away quickly with the right care and rehabilitation or they can nag you all year long and lead to additional injury risk if you don’t deal with them correctly. VYPE: If you wanted to say one thing about what it’s like to be an Orthopedic Surgeon for Central States Orthopedics, what would you say? Emerson: Our talented, positive team at Central States Orthopedics is what allows us to provide the best care for our patients. We’re available, we listen, and we provide our patients with responsive, personalized care that makes a difference. In other words, we’ll make sure you Get Seen, Get Heard, and Get Better. Dr. Emerson is available to see new patients at the Central States Orthopedics Hillcrest South location at 8803 S 101st East Ave, Suite 300. (918) 994-6277.

Booker T. Washington Hornets Swim Head coach Adina Norman has a team that’s poised to make a move in Class 5A as several swimmers expect to find their way to the podium this season. Team chemistry may not be the first thing people think about when they look at a swim team, but that’s exactly what the Hornets team has. Chemistry and a lot of it. Head coach Adina Norman has this team training together and working towards the same goal, improving times and grabbing a place on the podium. “The Booker T. swimmers train together over the summer. We do this so they are ahead of the game for the season but also so all the new swimmers can get to know everyone on the team. They not only swim, but go to breakfast, go to the movies and much more. Once school starts they are already bonded as a team. This really helps with team motivation and pulls them together as a unit,” said coach Norman. Leading the way is senior Evan 24

Latta, only a sophomore, has continued to improve and is looking like a seasoned veteran in the pool. She will swim the 50 Free and the 100 Free. “The team has grown so much. I feel we can really become quite the strong team. They are all so motivated. It makes me excited to coach them,” said coach Norman. Several other swimmers are leaving their mark on the program as well. Senior Jadon Wiley will swim the 100 Free and the 100 Backstroke, while fellow senior Carlos Rubio is set for the 100 Fly and the 100 Breaststroke. Sophomore Noah James is looking to make waves in the 100 Backstroke and the 200 Free. Also look for junior Pierce Pettit in the 50 Free and the 100 Free.
Anna Friedan (Sr.) and Megan FitzPatrick (So.) could be the X-factors for the girls team. Friedan will swim the 100 Backstroke and the 100 Fly, while FitzPatrick will swim the 100 Free and the 100 Breaststroke. The Hornets return 12 AllConference swimmers including Taylor Norman (Jr.), Cassie Powell (So.), Eli Brock, Raven Johnson and Griffin Holtzcher. The excitement for the season is obvious when you see the team working out and you listen to coach Norman talk about the team. Dive In With The Jenks Trojans Head coach John Turner has seen his share of great swimmers during his time at Jenks. We caught up with coach Turner to find out what makes this group so special. Very few programs ever reach the level of success like the Jenks swim program, which really caught fire in the 1990’s. Both programs won titles including four in the 90’s for the girls (90, 91, 92, 94) and six for the boys (91,92, 96, 97,98, 99).

DUTCH SOCCER RETURNS TALENTED GROUP The 2015-2016 Holland Hall boys’ soccer team, playing its last season in the Southwest Preparatory Conference, is looking forward to returning to the success that has marked Dutch soccer for most of the past three decades. Senior captains Michael Saliba and Jaelon Woodard lead a talented group of 16 returning lettermen. Saliba, junior Lane Norris and sophomores Nathan Washecheck and Jake Simmons form a solid backline. Woodard and sophomore Matthew Pearson win balls and distribute wisely from the central midfield, while junior Michael Burke attacks on the wing. Seniors Grayson Norris (7 goals last year) and Josh Chung create and finish scoring opportunities up front. In the matches against local club teams, the Holland Hall boys have played an exciting, attacking brand of soccer, scoring 19 goals and allowing two. They hope to continue this approach when SPC conference play commences on Friday, January 15, vs. Arlington (TX) Oakridge. The home opener at Hardesty Field on the Holland Hall campus is slated for the following week against the Ft. Worth Country Day School Falcons. For more information about this year’s team and scheduled matches, go to the Athletic page on the Holland Hall website.
LADY DUTCH SOCCER WITH NEW LOOK
Head coach Stephanie Pounds enters the new season with a few new faces after graduating several keys players from last year’s squad. “Our team has a very different look this season. We have lost many of the starters from last year, which gives our younger players a lot of opportunities to make a name for themselves. Standout players so far have been seniors Bri Liu (midfielder) and Grace White (defender). Giving us experience and talent. Juniors Cybil Seneker (midfielder) and Lily Taylor (goalkeeper) have also been playing well. Addie Wallace, sophomore (midfielder) has been playing extremely well so far this season,” said Pounds. “Our standout freshmen player so far has been defender Leah Walker, who may only be a freshman but who is playing like a senior. I am expecting really good things from her this year and in the future. The SPC is a tough conference, but if we can come together as a team and play as a unit, I am confident (hopeful) that we will make the tournament in February.”
DUTCH BOYS BASKETBALL

the end of the start of the new year. “We are still looking for an identity and trying to find some leadership to help guide this young and inexperienced team. We only have one senior, Anthony Armour, who actually just rejoined the team last week after deciding he wasn’t going to play this year. Hopefully, with some hard work and the development of some toughness, this team will get better as the season progresses and we learn from our mistakes,” said coach Brandon Maddux. Thompson is averaging 16.3 points per game, while Jaycson Bereal (6-5, So.) and Nathan Stolper (5-9, Jr.) are both averaging at or near 13.0 points a game. Armour is one of the teams top rebounders, while Corbin Daniels (5-11, So.) is averaging 7.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists.
