Trey Harris - Eisenhower When Trey Harris entered his sophomore season with the Eisenhower High School soccer team, he never expected to have an injury that would sideline him for the rest of the school year. On November 26th, 2019, Harris suffered a torn ACL and meniscus placing him on a path that would lead him to Advanced PT and a long road or recovery. The center-midfielder is known for his quickness on the field and the ability to play tough defense. Having to finish his sophomore season hurt has motivated Harris to get back to the field with the help of Advanced PT. “As a parent I was always updated on his progress and any concerns they had with him returning to practice,” said Brad Harris, Trey’s father. Fighting his way back to the field wasn’t easy,
but Harris kept his eye on the goal, which was playing sports again. “Being able to play sports with friends again is what I enjoy most,” said Harris. His expected return is no longer a dream as Harris has regained full motion and his practicing with the Eisenhower soccer team. “I’ve gotten over the injury and have gained strength,” said Harris. Harris completed his physical therapy at the Advanced PT West Wichita clinic and is now looking forward to completing as a junior for Eisenhower. His future plans include playing in the 2020 season, having a great senior year next year and continue playing soccer in college. Harris would like to attend med school one day. With his work ethic and determination, it’s clear Harris can accomplish any goal he sets for himself.
MENISCUS INJURIES
Amanda Noll, PT, DPT, CSCS Of all the knee injuries, an injury to the meniscus is one of the more
common findings in athlete’s that have knee pain, especially when the pain is accompanied by a “locking” or “popping” mechanism. Meniscal injuries often involve a significant twisting of the knee, especially when the knee is in a flexed position. There are several different types of meniscal tears ranging from mild to severe that may or may not be surgical. Athletes may start to complain about knee pain that is localized to one side of the knee joint and will likely have swelling in this area as well as be tender to the touch. They will start to report pain when try to make quick lateral movements such a cutting and possible a “catching” feeling that is painful and may restrict their ROM. Often times, Physicial Therapy is a great solution to helping resolve pain and dysfunction from a meniscal tear without requiring surgery. Your Physical Therapist will teach you different strengthening exercises to help support the knee joint to decrease pain and locking of the knee, helping to avoid surgery and get back in the game faster. If the tear is significant enough to need surgery, Physical Therapy is used post-operatively to restore range of motion and strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee joint with gradual progression back into the athlete’s sport. If you or someone you know is having knee pain, whether you are an athlete or not, call Advanced Physical Therapy today and let us help you get back to life’s adventures pain free!

#LetUsPlay Hi VYPE Nation! Welcome to the 2nd half of the 2020 Season of COVID-19! Can our world get any more confusing, frustrating, nauseating, and frightening? As I sit here today (Tuesday, August 25th) working feverishly with some great people who are attempting to finish the 2020 VYPE High School Football Preview, we really don’t know who is and who is not playing fall sports this year. However, VYPE has made the right decision to move forward with our football preview and make a commitment to put out a magazine and update social media each month. With or without sports, there are still wonderful and compelling stories to tell about those student athletes that will still get to play and even those that do not. Student athletes excel in many things; athletics, academics, community service and all those stories are worth telling and VYPE is going to keep telling them. VYPE made our decision based on what was right for the students and that is to continue to honor and recognize their accomplishments. As apparently many of you are aware, I created a Facebook post the Friday after the USD259 decision to postpone fall sports and before the USD259 School Board meeting on Monday, August 24th. To date, the post has over 88,000 views, over 14,000 engagements and over 650 comments. If you have not read the post, check it out on https://www.facebook.com/ksvype/posts/3136852549697367. The surprising and humbling level of response strongly suggest that the post struck a nerve and that people agreed with my position on USD259, COVID-19 and sports. In summary (of a really long post)…Let them play! In summary, the post focused on three areas; the propensity to hear the vocal minority instead of the hearing the silent majority, the lack of common sense as to the way a variety of different people, groups, etc. interpret the Covid numbers in the fashion that best aligns with their particular agenda, the undeniable but apparently unspeakable influence of media (for example I JUST heard on NBC National News that “6-feet of distance” is not enough!), the threat of litigation, and finally the question of making decisions that are right for the best interest of…our children. I urge those making the decisions regarding the return to school and sports to consider the quote above from President Roosevelt and make decisions that are “right” for the children and not “right” based on fear and misinformation, “right” for the grownups, “right” for the media and “right” for the lawyers. At the end of the day, with all the complexities of the COVID-19 virus and all the noise, the most important and right decision that can be made takes the best care of the students and our children. Period. I want to recognize all the students and parents that exercised their constitutional rights and peacefully protested the boards decision. VYPE was at those protest and was impressed and frankly proud of the students and parents that participated. They had a message and an opinion, and they presented that message in an extremely “grownup” way. Us old people can learn from them. It was very cool! That concludes my “one man’s opinion” rant. Now, let’s talk FOOTBALL! I say it every year, but this football preview is the best football preview that VYPE has ever produced. Why? A great deal of influence, experience and production support from VYPE Oklahoma! They have been doing 200-plus page Oklahoma high school football previews for years and they know what you want in a football preview. Next on the VYPE agenda and publishing schedule is to get out the Fall Sports Preview covering all the other sports happening this fall! Finally, I want to give a HUGE shoutout to our primary distribution points and all our sponsors for making the VYPE Football Preview and VYPE in general possible! Special thanks to Spangles for agreeing to distribute the VYPE Football Preview in 22 of their locations! Special thanks to Advanced Physical Therapy for distributing in their 23 area locations and 9 area Hog Wild Pit BBQ locations for their distribution. They came to VYPE’s rescue and understand the importance of local media and community-based content unlike nationally based distributors who have lost their understanding of the local community. These local, hometown, community aware folks make sure our audience has a place in their neighborhood to pick up a magazine. They mean the world to VYPE and to all of you. Let them know! Tee up the ball. It is time to “Get In The Game!”

KANSAS FOOTBALL PREVIEW POLL WINNER
Poll Winner: Colin Shields Maize South Maize South standout Colin Shields enters his final season as the starting quarterback, but his enthusiasm is at an all time high.
“The thing I love most about my team and teammates has to be the team culture. We’ve only been a school since 2009 but in that time I believe that we’ve developed one of the best cultures in the area. Every time someone comes into school, practice, weights, the locker room, or steps onto the field on a Friday night they know that we all have each other’s backs and are going to push each other to become better players on the field and better people off of the field, said Shields.
This season Shields and his teammates have set high expectations for themselves as they look to make another run in the playoffs.

Tanner Cash Clearwater
8
Clearwater High School senior and quarterback of the football team, Tanner Cash, is ready to prove to all the critics he is ready to take that next step. One goal for this season is a deep run in the playoffs.
“My personal goal this year is to have a 65% completion percentage or better. This in turn leads to me getting the ball into my receiver’s hands and letting them go make the plays that they’re all capable of making. As a team our goal this year is to get 1 percent better each day and go 1-0 each time we step onto the field on Fridays. If we’re able to improve every day, even by just 1 percent from the start of summer lifting to the end of the season, those days will start to add up and we’ll end up being a really good team
Tanner Cash
“Personally for this season, I want to prove that I am ready to be a college football player. I want to showcase that I have what it takes to be a leader on and off the field and show coaches that I would be a great asset for them at the next level. As a team, I want to make a deep playoff run. I really think we have the skill to do it and I know we have all put in a tremendous amount of work this offseason to be prepared for whatever is thrown our way. I realize that a lot of things are uncertain during this time, but I know that one thing is for sure, our team is going to be dangerous this season, said Cash. His passion for his teammates comes through when you ask Cash what he loves about playing with this group of guys.
“The thing I love most about my teammates is how close we are to one another. Living in a smaller town and going to a smaller school like Clearwater you really get the chance to grow up with the kids around you. Everyone knows everybody so you get a sense that you are all family and you look out for one another, especially on the football field, said Cash.
with an opportunity to make another run in the 5A state playoffs, said Shields. Shields just received his first offer from Wayne State College in Nebraska.

SCCDAT ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Sydney Hallman South Haven Senior Sydney Hallman first got involved with SCCDAT when she was only a sophomore. She had no idea it would turn into a threeyear relationship helping people in her community. “I got involved with SCCDAT my sophomore year of high school. The thing I have enjoyed the most is getting to work with other kids from my community to advocate for something very meaningful to a lot of people,” said Hallman.
Sydney Hallman
Also involved in FFA as well as being part of the student council, Hallman feels it’s important to share the message of SCCDAT to her community.
“I feel it is important to get the SCCDAT message out to the people in my community because just a one-time use of any type of drug or alcohol could ruin a person’s life,” said Hallman. “For the 2020 school year I plan on continuing to advocate and get involved with the community as much as possible. During these times there are so many people who are struggling with their lives.”

KANSAS FOOTBALL PREVIEW POLL WINNER
Eli Rowland - Andale Andale High School’s Eli Rowland loves playing football and loves his team and teammates.
“What I love most about my team and teammates is all of the friendships and memories we have made. I’ve been playing with most of these guys since the third grade and it’s amazing to see how everyone has progressed,” said Rowland. The running back is entering his senior season with lofty goals for himself and the team.
“I, like the majority of people on my team, want to go back and get another ring. A goal we shoot for each year. We believe with the
personnel we have and returning starters that we can make a good run. I personally want to rush for close to 2,000 yards, as well as five or more picks on defense,” said Rowland.
Also a basketball and track athlete, Rowland said he would eventually like to work as an educator working his way up to be an Athletic Director or Principal. Rowland said his parents are a huge influence in his life.
“As a little kid you don’t realize how much your parents really do for you but as I’ve gotten older I have really
recognized that. I am grateful for them for getting me into football and all of the hard work they do to allow me to do something I love.”

He caught 18 balls for 598 yards and six touchdowns a year ago. On the defensive side of the ball, honorable mention all-league defensive tackle Jackson Bradley (6-0, 225) returns and will likely be the anchor of the unit.

Tight end Jakobi Livingston (6-3, 225) caught just two balls a year ago, but was an important factor as a blocker for

TEAM PREVIEW Adam Rosenstiel takes over for Weston Schartz, who took the Pioneers to back-to-back six win seasons. West returns seven starters on defense, which allowed 14 points or less in all six of its wins. Linebacker Quentin Saunders (6-0, 195) was a second team all-league performer last season, as was defensive back J’Qwon Johnson (5-10, 160). Saunders will also be the Pioneers’ running back, where he rushed for over 700 yards last season. After Saunders, there are plenty of questions on the offensive side of the ball, especially at the skill positions, where only tight end A.J. McCullough (6-1, 185) is back. As a whole, West has to replace 60 percent of its offense.

Poll Winner: Komarion Hart Wichita East Entering his senior season at East, Komarion Hart is more than ready to put the pads on and take the field with his teammates. Hart said he loves playing with this group of guys.
“I love how we can all have fun and handle business at the same time. We are great at communicating with each other,” said Hart. The receiver is looking to help his team win game while pursuing a personal mark in receiving yards this season.
“One of the personal goals I have is to get over 1000-yards and a team goal is to get one of those beautiful state championship rings,” said Hart.
Hart said he plans to play basketball this winter and attend college next fall. One person always in his corner is his mother.
“My mom, she’s my biggest supporter in life not just football. She keeps my head straight and makes sure I’m good everyday. I just want to be able to do the same for her,” said Hart.

CLASS 5A ANDOVER TROJANS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY TONY DURANO STATE FARM ARK VALLEY-CHISHOLM TRAIL LEAGUE, DIVISION II COACH: KEN DUSENBURY, FIRST SEASON
SCHEDULE: Sep. 4 – At Maize Sep. 11 – H Ark City Sep. 18 – H Salina Central Sep. 25 – At Eisenhower Oct. 2 – At Campus Oct. 9 – H Valley Center Oct. 16 – At Andover Central Oct. 23 – H Goddard LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 3-7 2018 – 3-6 2017 – 5-5 2016 – 6-4 2015 – 1-8
TEAM PREVIEW Dusenbury takes over the Trojan program after spending the past five years as the head coach at Garden Plain, where led the Owls to a 42-11 record. Andover returns a first team all-league safety in Isaiah Maikori (6-2, 180) to lead the defense. Joining Maikori is second team allleague linebacker Chandler Goodnight (5-11, 200) and honorable mention defensive tackle Dillon Schobrough (6-1, 240). On offense, the Trojans will be much more inexperienced.
BISHOP CARROLL GOLDEN EAGLES GREATER WICHITA ATHLETIC LEAGUE
COACH: DUSTY TRAIL, FOURTH SEASON
SCHEDULE: Sep. 4 – H Wichita Northwest Sep. 11 – H Kapaun MC Sep. 18 – H Derby Sep. 25 – H Dodge City Oct. 1 – At Lawrence Oct. 9 – H Lawrence FS Oct. 15 – Open Oct. 23 – Open
2017 – 12-1 2016 – 7-3 2015 – 11-2
TEAM PREVIEW With the return of six key starters on offense, Bishop Carroll is poised to be one of the more explosive units in the area. Hunter Trail (5-8, 175) was a first team all-league running back last season for the Eagles, as was wide receiver Oscar Gallardo (6-1, 180) and center Ben Purvis (6-0, 240). Quarterback Aiden Niedens (6-0, 170) and offensive lineman Gabe Havlovic (6-4, 245) were second team all-league performers. At the other receiver spot will be Noah Ferguson (5-10, 170), who was honorable mention all-league. There are more questions on the defensive side of the ball for Carroll, as just four starters return. Defensive lineman Matthew Morrell (6-1, 185) and defensive back Cade Gatschet (6-0, 180) were honorable mention all-league.
EISENHOWER TIGERS
ARK VALLEY-CHISHOLM TRAIL LEAGUE, DIVISION II COACH: DARRIN FISHER, SECOND SEASON
SCHEDULE: Sep. 3 – H Hays Sep. 11 – H Salina Central Sep. 18 – At Andover Central Sep. 25 – H Andover Oct. 2 – At Goddard Oct. 9 – H Ark City Oct. 16 – At Great Bend Oct. 23 – At Valley Center LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 5-4 2018 – 3-6 2017 – 5-7 2016 – 3-6 2015 – 7-5
TEAM PREVIEW Eisenhower struggled on offense last season scoring below 20 points in five of its nine games. But with nine potential starters returning, the Tigers are confident the offense will be a strength this season. The key returning player
Oscar Gallardo is wide receiver Mason Turney (5-8, 155), who was first team all-league last season. But Fisher is excited about quarterback Nick Hogan (6-5, 217), who was impressive last season before a season-ending injury after the Tigers’ third game against Andover. On the other side of the ball, all three linebackers return: Seth Voker (5-10, 195), who was honorable mention all-league, Brent Ho (5-6, 155) and Cody Hawks (6-1, 210), who was second team all-league.

TEAM PREVIEW Goddard was optimistic last season about its chances to compete in 4A. In 2018, the Lions made it to the title game and they thought they could make a deep run again last season. But

injuries derailed their season and they lost to McPherson in the second round of the playoffs. The return of quarterback Kyler Semrad (6-1, 190) will hopefully cure

CLASS 5A played, the Lions averaged 30.8 points per game; in the six other games, they averaged 11.8 points per game. Among Goddard’s large senior class are first team all-league offensive lineman Rhett Brown (6-2, 285) and second team allleague defensive back Dalton Caraway (5-11, 170).
HUTCHINSON SALTHAWKS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY FEE INSURANCE GROUP ARK VALLEY-CHISHOLM TRAIL LEAGUE, DIVISION I COACH: MIKE VERNON, THIRD SEASON
SCHEDULE: Sep. 4 – At Valley Center Sep. 11 – At Garden City Sep. 18 – H Maize South Sep. 25 – H Newton Oct. 2 – At Derby Oct. 9 – At Salina South Oct. 16 – H Campus Oct. 23 – H Maize LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 2-7 2018 – 2-7 2017 – 5-4 2016 – 10-2 2015 – 6-4
TEAM PREVIEW The Salthawks return three players who were either first or second team all-league last season. Inside linebacker Jack Hawver (6-0, 198) was first team all-league last year and Vernon thinks he is poised for an even bigger season. Hutchinson’s defense also returns interior lineman David Waymire (6-1, 234), who made second team all-league. On offense, Alec McCuan rushed for 1,000 yards last season and was a second team all-league performer. Vernon said to expect McCuan to play all over the field this season. With so many returning players with experience, Hutchinson could make a significant jump in the league standings.
AND ORANGE THEORY FITNESS ARK VALLEY-CHISHOLM TRAIL LEAGUE, DIVISION I COACH: GARY GUZMAN, 10TH SEASON SCHEDULE: Sep. 4 – H Andover Sep. 11 – At Campus Sep. 18 – H Newton Sep. 25 – At Ark City Oct. 2 – H Salina South Oct. 9 – At Maize South Oct. 16 – H Derby Oct. 23 – At Hutchinson LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 10-2 2018 – 10-2 2017 – 11-2 2016 – 7-3 2015 – 1-8
TEAM PREVIEW There are two ways to look at the Maize offense. On one hand, the Eagles return four of five of their offensive lineman, including first team all-league selection Nate Harding (6-2, 250). But on the other hand they have to replace all skill position starters from last year. That transition might be a bit smoother with Heights transfer Joshua Sanders (5-7, 180) presumably starting at running back. On defense, Maize returns two first team all-league players in linebackers Kyle Haas (6-1, 218) and Kendall Norrod (5-11, 195). Couple those two with five other starters returning and the Eagles appear set on the defensive side of the ball.

TEAM PREVIEW Very few teams posses the type of talent returning at the skill positions as Maize South. At quarterback, Colin Shields (6-1, 190) was a second team all-league selection last season, where he threw for over 1,300 yards and 10 touchdowns. Joining him in the backfield will be Hunter Niemann (5-11, 170), who was an honorable mention allleague running back. He ran for 856 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. Finally at receiver is Jake Johnson (6-0, 185), who also was an honorable mention all-league selection last season, where he caught 31 balls for 308 yards and two scores. The Mavericks also return three starters on the offensive line. On defense, there are just four starters returning, but of those is all-state linebacker, Brandon Bowles.

TEAM PREVIEW Newton returns 15 starters, so there is an expectation of improvement. The problem is the difficulty of the schedule. Still, there is certainly enough talent to eclipse last season’s win total. Second team allleague wide receiver Peyton Maxwell (6-0, 165) caught 59 balls for 824 yards and nine touchdowns last year and will be the Railers top playmaker this year. Throwing to Maxwell will be returning quarterback Ben Schmidt (6-1, 180), who threw for over 1,800 yards and 12 touchdowns. On defense, linebacker Dehann Nelson (5-11, 200), who was second team all-league, will anchor a unit that returns seven starters.

TEAM PREVIEW The Mustangs return just eight starters from a team that lost to Andover in the first round of the 5A playoffs. Their top returning player is defensive back Dakota Hogan (5-9, 174), who was a second team all-league selection last season. He had 48 tackles, an interception
and a touchdown last year. Linebacker Brooks Burgoon (5-11, 180) and defensive lineman Rafael Serrano (6-3, 200) will also be key contributors on defense.

TEAM PREVIEW A trio of all-league players will anchor Salina South’s defense. Defensive back A.J. Johnson (6-2, 185) was selected to the first team last year and will likely play on offense, too. Linebacker Carter Kirby (5-10, 176) was selected to the second team last year and interior lineman Kayson Dietz (5-11, 305) was on his way to being an all-league player last season before a torn hamstring ended his season after five games. On offense, junior running back, Brandt Cox (6-1 195), was forced into a starting job last year and made the most of it as he made second team all-league. Quarterback Terran Galloway (5-11, 168) played most of last year injured and Sellers thinks if he stays healthy, he could be in for a big year.

TEAM PREVIEW Heights finished last season 3-6, but they were five points away from a winning season, as the Falcons lost two close games that could have altered their season. They return just nine starters this season, but two of those starters earned all-league honors last season on the defensive side of the ball. Amarion Wilkins (6-4, 190) was a second team all-league defensive end last season, while Maliq Little (5-8, 170) was an honorable mention
Maize South all-league linebacker. Wilkins registered 43 tackles and 2.5 were for a loss, while Little had 57 tackles and two were for a loss. On the offensive side of the ball, John Randle (6-0, 175), who played a significant role as a freshman, was a second team all-league selection last year, where he rushed for 708 yards and eight touchdowns.

TEAM PREVIEW Northwest has gone 24-2 over the past two seasons with losses in the 5A Championship game each time. With five players returning that are garnering Division I interest, 2020 might be the year the Grizzlies breakthrough. Offense has been Northwest’s calling card the past two seasons, as it averaged nearly 52 points
per game a year ago. All-state running back Julius Bolden (5-11, 195), who rushed for 1,567 yards and 29 touchdowns, is back. Outside of that, plenty of newcomers will need to emerge. However, the defense is loaded with returning players. First team all-state defensive end Zac Daher (64, 245) will anchor the front four. He recorded 50 tackles last year, 12.5 of which were for a loss. He also registered seven sacks. Defensive back Wetu Kalomo (6-0, 175) was also a first team all-state player last year. He intercepted eight passes and deflected 13 more. Also back are defensive lineman Nathan Carter (6-2, 240) and defensive back Todric McGee (6-0, 190), both of which were first team all-league players.

TEAM PREVIEW Head coach Brad Nicks is optimistic this group can rebound from the 0-9 season in 2019. With several new faces on the roster and a solid core of leaders with experience, coach Nicks said his team should improve with each game. “We have a hard-working group of men this year and I am excited to watch them grow and get better each week,” said Nicks. Karsen Loader (6-1, 215, Sr.) was 1st Team Defensive Line and Honorable Mention on the offensive line at center. He sets the tone for the Cowboys. Other players to watch include Robbie Keener (Sr.) who may see time at QB, Brandon Parker (6-3, 220, Sr.) at tackle and DE, Camden Meeks (5-10, 145, Sr.) at wide out and corner, Devan Fouliard (Sr.), Brenton Reiff (6-2, Jr.) at RB and Kaleb Becker (Jr.) who was a 1st

TEAM PREVIEW Andover Central graduated a talented senior class last year that set the school record in wins, as well as over a dozen other records. The Jaguars will still be strong along their offensive line, where first team all-league Drew Daniels (6-2, 235) returns, as well as Landon Coy (6-2, 260). Running behind that line will be leading returning rusher, Jacob Rees (5-10, 190), who will also be one of Central’s top defensive players at linebacker. While the talent will be young and relatively unproven, the cupboard is far from bare for the Jaguars.

The Bullpups must find a dependable quarterback and running back to go with a trio of starters at receiver returning, including second team all-league performer Trey Buckbee (6-3, 174). McPherson returns just five starters on defense and will need to find replacements for all-state defensive linemen Cody Stufflebean and Mason Thrash. Second team allleague wide receiver Braden Ledford (5-10, 150), who also was an honorable mention defensive back, is the Vikings top returning player. Outside of Ledford, Winfield will need others who played considerable snaps last season to continue to improve. DRIVE TO ZERO SENIOR SHOUTOUT Lilliana Wilson, Hutchinson Lilliana Wilson is a sophomore at Hutchinson High School where her first year as a member of the SAFE Club is nearing an end. Wilson originally got involved with SAFE after one of the club officers introduced her to the group. “I got involved in SAFE club to show people that being safe is more important than being cool. Officer Fine was how I was informed about the club I am so thankful I was able to get involved in a club like this one,” said Wilson. There are many things about SAFE Wilson really enjoys. “The best part about SAFE club so far is working the pledge to wear your seat belt table, being able to encourage people to wear their seat belt and at the end of the day saving people’s life by you just saying only a couple words to get them to wear their seat belt, that is my favorite part so far,” said Wilson. Wilson feels it is an important cause and she is going to continue to support and encourage her classmates. “I want my classmates to be informed about SAFE club to see that there are

people out there who care about everyone’s safety and are actually trying to help everyone in our school’s lives and live a safe and happy life,” said Wilson. Also involved in STUCO, CTC, and Sign Language Club, somehow Wilson finds the time to also play volleyball and softball. Away from school you can usually find Wilson hitting a few balls in the cages or just hanging out with friends. “I enjoy going to the softball cages and getting better as a teammate to help us through our hard times, I also enjoy spending time with my friends and making amazing memories with them,” said Wilson. The sophomore offers this advice to other students looking to join a worthwhile club.

“If you are interested in joining SAFE Club go talk to your school resource officer or administrator. Ours, Officer Fine, always loves the company from his students. I highly encourage every single one of my classmates to want to get involved in helping our community become a Safe place for each other,” said Wilson.

Martin said several other school administrators were involved in the process including Aaron Lechien - Asst. Principal, Don Kiser - Grounds-man, and J Means - District AD.

The design process with Hellas was an easy one according to former AD Kyle Haught. “The design process was great and there are many custom options. Their crew came out months ahead of schedule due to the shut down and they finished ahead of schedule. Super professional and efficient crew as they took care of our facilities while the job was being completed. Communication was great across the board at every stage.”

To say the development and completed construction of a new field at Wichita South was a team effort is an understatement. Former Athletic Director Kyle Haught was instrumental in getting this project off the ground. Current Athletic Director John Martin came in to help insure this project was completed and the student athletes of South are reaping the benefits of their work. “The 12 year old turf was replaced and the work was completed in early June. Custom colors soccer lines and end zones were a addition in the design process. Hellas has state of the art playing surface and the new drain system that was installed will ensure the field will be able to withstand all the Kansas weather can throw at it,” said AD John Martin.

TEAM PREVIEW The Indians return six starters on defense; a unit that allowed just 7.3 points per game a year ago. Leading the way will be second team all-league linebacker Jake Engelbrecht (5-8, 190). While the offense only returns four starters, they are four very impactful starters as three of them were all-state performers a year ago. Running back Eli Rowland (5-10, 160) rushed for 1,273 yards and 22 touchdowns last year and figures to be one of the top running backs in the state this year. Noah Meyer (5-8, 165) spent time at running back last year, but will be Andale’s starting quarterback this year. Two of the primary blockers in Andale’s run-heavy system will be tight end Caden Parthemer (6-0, 190) and offensive lineman Cayden Winter (6-0, 220).

The Cardinals also return two second team all-league players in wide receiver Luke Grace (6-3, 165) and offensive lineman Peyton Hays (6-0, 260). Morgan Siebold (6-3, 220, Sr.), Kale Hauserman (6-2, 295, Sr.) and Tillman Hartner (5-11, 250, Sr.) anchor the offensive line. Quarterback Blake Frederick (5-10, 210, Sr.) will benefit from having a big line and Mullin at RB. Frederick could have his best season call the shots for the
Tigers. Also look for Lane Mussleman (6-0, 170, Jr.) on the defensive side of the ball in the secondary. TEAM PREVIEW Clearwater’s 2020 prospects starts and ends with allstate quarterback Tanner Cash (6-2, 210). Due to injury, Cash played in just six games last season, but his numbers were eyepopping in those contests. He threw for nearly 1,200 yards and rushed for almost 900 more, while accounting for 20 touchdowns. Cash’s health will be key for the Indians. Three starters also return on Clearwater’s offensive line. The Indians’ defense returns seven starters from last season, including second team allleague lineman, Sean Harris (6-3, 250) and honorable mention all-league defensive back Dalen Ankerholz (6-1, 155).

Skill positions will be a strength this year as players like Hunter Schroeder (Sr.) return to the lineup. Schroeder starts at running back where he was 1st Team All-NCKL and Honorable Mention at linebacker. Chas Carlgren (Sr.) is a tight end/middle linebacker the Panthers are excited to see in 2020. Carlgren was named 1st Team All-NCKL at WR and MLB. Other players to watch include Dylan Thoman (Sr.), Keyan Miller (Jr.), Dalton Owen (Jr.), and Shelby Giersch (Jr.).

TEAM PREVIEW With three all-league players returning on defense, Halstead once again has a core to be a formidable unit. The Dragons allowed 15 points per game last season. Linebacker Doug Grider (6-2, 235) led Halstead in tackles last season with 127 and he also recorded 13.5 tackles for a loss and 4.5 sacks. Safety Lakin Farmer (6-0, 175) led the Dragons with seven interceptions. Defensive lineman Cole Herman (6-4, 275) will anchor up front. Farmer will also be Halstead’s quarterback again. He rushed for 748 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. Grider and Herman will also be starters on an experienced offensive line.

TEAM PREVIEW With first team all-league offensive lineman Owen O’Halloran (5-9, 210) returning, along with two other starters, Hesston’s front line will be as good as any in 3A. On the outside, the Swathers also return a plethora of playmakers
Tanner Cash including first team all-league receivers Ben Bollinger (6-4, 185) and Brady Cox (5-8, 150). The big question for Hesston is who takes over the quarterback position after Ryan Eilert graduated. There will be three different players vying for the spot. On defense, the Swathers return six starters and two other rotational players. O’Halloran at defensive line, Cox at linebacker and Bollinger at defensive back gives Hesston a trio to build on.

Maybe just as important for the Vikings’ offense is the return of four offensive linemen: Kort Sjogren (6-0, 190), Skyler Hopkins (6-0, 205), Brandon Malm (6-1, 260), Tanner Luttig (5-8, 205). “What I love about this team is everyone on this team has a job to do and they do it. Everyone wants to come out for football because they love the experience,” said Burns. “My personal goal is to play in the playoffs because everything on the field matters. Every drive, every mistake, every play. That’s what
is exciting about high school football is everyone will leave it all out on the field for every game because they know it matters down the road. I think our team goals are to be the best we can be everyday and fight for the things we want. I think the biggest goal for us this year is a state championship appearance.”
Burns said coach Jeff Warner has been a big influence on him, on and off the field. “He sees the talent in everyone and makes sure that we have a winning season. He is a great coach and a

TEAM PREVIEW Head coach Brad Gober has a young coming into the 2020 season after losing 12 seniors to graduation a year ago. Several sophomores gained valuable experience last year and will make significant contributions this season. Grady Seyfert (6-2, 255, So.) started every game as a freshman so he’s not your typical sophomore on the offensive line. Braden Burk (5-9, 205, Jr.) was named All-League last season and is a two-year starter. Cameron Konkel (5-9, 215, Jr.) rounds out the top returning offensive linemen. Look for Jackson Rexroat (5-10, 165, Jr.) at RB/ LB this season and Hunter Prochaska, a state champion wrestler, on the defensive line. Brennan Walker will play TE/DE after starting at the positions last year. Caylen Chancellor has excellent speed and is primed for a breakout season. Others to watch include Brycn Corbett (Sr.), Owen Eilert (Jr.) and Branson Hiserote (So.).

Eli Wiseman (5-10, 160), who was a first team all-league defensive back and second team all-league flex, returns for the Dragons. Joining Wiseman on offense is Austin Hilton (6-2, 175), who was also a first team all-league performer last year. Hilton was also an honorable mention all-league selection defensive back. CLASS 2A TEAM PREVIEW If Garden Plain is to replicate last season’s success, its defense will go a long way in determining that. The Owls return eight starters from last season’s team that gave up 15 points per game during their first eight games of the season. Anthony Hays (6-0, 200) was a first team all-league linebacker last season where he led the team with 68 tackles, while also intercepting two passes and recovering a fumble. Defensive lineman Timmy Gallagher (6-0, 205), who was an honorable mention allleague selection, also returns. He finished with 19 tackles, three of them for a loss, and a sack. On the defensive side of the ball, Hillsboro returns two players who made honorable mention all-league in defensive lineman Austin Rempel and defensive back Dillon Boldt, who also will be Potucek’s top target at receiver on offense.

This season Mercer has set a goal for himself to become a better athlete and leader.
“Physical goals do not matter to me as much as being a role model to the younger teammates who have more years to improve. My goal is to be the best player that I can be but also be the best teammate,” said Mercer.
After graduating next spring, Mercer plans to attend Wichita State University where he wants to pursue a degree in Athletic
Training and eventually become a physical therapist or chiropractor.
“Being a student athlete at Butler is a once in a lifetime experience. I know all teams say, ‘it’s like family,’ but it truly feels like family at Butler, especially on the softball field. SCHEDULE: Sep. 4 – At Garden Plain Sep. 11 – At Remington Sep.18 – H Elkhart Sep. 25 – H Ellinwood Oct. 2 – H Independent Oct. 9 – At Sublette Oct.16 – H Stanton County Oct. 23 – At Sedgwick LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 8-3 2018 – 10-1 2017 – 10-1 2016 – 7-2 2015 – 6-4
TEAM PREVIEW The Cardinals will have to replace a significant amount of talent that graduated, but the next man up has always been the philosophy for one of the state’s top programs. There is still plenty of talent coming back, however, especially on the defensive side. Jonathan Wright (6-2, 180) was a first team all-league linebacker last season, as he led the team with 83 tackles. Also back are two second team all-league players: defensive back Cole Schulte (5-11, 160), who led the Cardinals in interceptions with four and defensive lineman Logan Warren (5-11, 180) who led the Cardinals in tackles for loss with ten. Wright and Schulte will also be key components on offense. Wright scored eight touchdowns last season as a flex. Schulte is listed as an athlete, so he will play in multiple positions in the Cardinals’ offense.

Carter Underwood (5-10, 200) was a second team all-league offensive lineman and defensive back Keenan Drees (5-9, 170) also made second team. Compete for all four quarters to the best of your ability is the message from head coach Shane Richards. Coach Richards is invested in his players, wanting success not just on the field, but off as well. “We have a team that has had ups and downs and are ready for some success,” said Richards. Several seniors return including Gus Campa (6-1, 240) on the defensive line, Jerrett McMillian at WR/ CB, Mason Richards (6-1) on the offensive and defensive lines, Jared McCartney at RB/ SS, and Jacob Gormley who returns after taking 2019 off from football. OZ ESPORTS
Oz Esports: Fundraising Made Simple
Ideas are born from necessity. The uncertainty of the 2020 season left many booster clubs and athletic programs wondering what the new season would look like. It also left them wondering how they were going to raise money for the teams. Enter Kristen Goodnight and husband Alan Goodnight. Members of their sons’ high school football booster club, the typical fundraisers were no longer an option due to the situation with COVID-19, giving birth to Oz Esports, a gaming or esports tournament allowing teams to compete in an activity most are doing at home anyway. “My husband and I are highly involved with our sons’ high school football team and booster club. Early this spring and summer, due to Covid-19, we had to cancel our annual mulch sales and golf tournament, our two biggest fundraisers of the year. As a result, we developed this idea to raise money for the team that was safe, easy and fun,” said Kristen.
“The process is simple. The team or booster club will select a date and time for the event and the game or games they wish to play. Our team can have the tournament registration live and ready to promote within 24 hours,” said Kristen.
The fun factor for the athletes and parents is unlike any other and it gives the players an opportunity to bond in a unique way. Josh Wolfe, a junior on the Andover football team said, “the tournament was very fun to play in.” Feedback from the players and parents was nothing but positive.
“Our experience and feedback from the Andover High School football tournament was fantastic. It was not only fun and competitive but a great bonding activity
Setting up a tournament of this kind may seem like a daunting task, but Oz Esports handles everything from set up to custom graphics and marketing.
“Oz Esports will set up and manage the event, tailored to meet your teams’ specific needs. We will help you promote the tournament to your audience, by providing custom event graphics for social media, email templates and marketing strategies to ensure a successful event,” said Kristen.
There are many different types of games a team can use in tournament style play. Oz Esports allows the team to select the game or games they would like to use for the competition. “The team will pick the game or games they wish to play. Since Oz Esports can host the tournaments simultaneously, teams can pick up to three games (or options) for their event. This gives players more variety to choose the game they wish to play. And our multi-platform software allows players to participate on any gaming device,” said Kristen.

“There is no upfront cost and the team is guaranteed 70 percent of the proceeds, which is about three-times the return of most traditional fundraisers. Once the event is completed, the team will receive its’ proceeds quickly, within five to seven business days,” said Kristen.
2020 FOOTBALL PREVIEW
There is no limit to the size of the team as the tournaments are set up in a 1 vs. 1 single elimination bracket format. Oz Esports can set up the tournament to be private or allow unlimited participation.

“Online gaming is the No. 1 entertainment choice among teens in 80 percent of U.S. households. Schools across the country
Unlike other fundraisers, Oz Esports makes the process simple and easy for parents and coaches. No more hauling pounds of food products or spending the afternoon at a hot golf tournament. It’s as simple as setting a date and spreading the word.
for the team. We also incentivize the players by providing cash and/or prizes to the winners,” said Kristen.

The gaming community has reached new heights with high schools and universities creating Esports teams to compete and represent their schools. Oz Esports is capturing the most popular form of entertainment in today’s household.
are adding Esports programs and initiatives to their districts. So, given the popularity, it made sense to develop a fundraiser that was fun and competitive for teens, easy for parents and coaches, and profitable for the team,” said Kristen.

TEAM PREVIEW The past two seasons, the Eagles have had as much playoff success as any team in the state. Last year, Canton-Galva scored a remarkable 66 consecutive points on its way to the school’s first state championship. Many players return from that team, including all-state wide receiver and defensive back Tyson Struber (6-3, 190). Also returning on defense is all-state linebacker Brandon Huff (6-0, 210). Rounding out the defensive returners is lineman Connor Koehn (6-4, 210). On offense, honorable mention all-state running back Brayden Collins (6-2, 210) is back, as well as offensive lineman Keaton Littrell (6-4, 210).
CENTRAL BURDEN RAIDERS SOUTH CENTRAL BORDER LEAGUE

TEAM PREVIEW Last season was supposed to be a rebuilding year for Central Burden and while its record was not gaudy, the Raiders did make the playoffs. Blair’s hope this year is to use the playoff appearance as a springboard into a successful 2020 season. Returning on offense is Zarek Wilson (5-11, 175), who was an honorable mention all-league running back. Wilson ran for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns. Two key members of the offensive line also return in Cody Delaney (5-11, 225) and Alex Hood (6-0, 200).

SCHEDULE: Sep. 4 – H Onaga Sep. 11 – H Little River Sep. 18 – At Wakefield Sep. 25 – H Burlington Oct. 2 – H Valley Falls Oct. 9 – H Doniphan West Oct. 16 – H Washington County Oct. 23 – At Maranatha Academy LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 9-1 2018 – 9-1 2017 – 7-2 2016 – 8-2 2015 – 2-7
TEAM PREVIEW Russ Steinbrock has been coaching at Clifton-Clyde for twenty season and has amassed an overall record of 122-73. This year the team is coming off a 9-1 effort and that success is fueling expectations after winning back-to-back district championships. Seven starters return on offense including Aiden
Aiden Rudolph Rudolph (6-1, 190, Sr.) at QB/RB. Rudolph will also play CB on defense. The offensive and defensive lines could be the strength of the team this season with Dillon Provost (5-8, 205, Sr.), Mason Ferron (5-9, 190, Sr.) and Douglas Koch (510, 175, Sr.) anchoring the lines up front. Also look for Dawson Girard (5-8, 145 Sr.) at WR/DB, Tee Koch (5-8, 150, Jr.) at RB/ DB and Jett Skocny (6-1, 150, Jr.) at WR/DB.
DEXTER/CEDAR VALE SPARTANS SOUTH CENTRAL BORDER LEAGUE
COACH: K.B. CRISS, 3RD SEASON SCHEDULE: Sep. 4 – At Flinthills Sep. 11 – H Central Burden Sep. 18 – H Udall Sep. 25 – At Marmaton Valley Oct. 2 – H Yates Center Oct. 9 – At West Elk Oct. 16 – H Sedan Oct. 23 – At Oswego
TEAM PREVIEW Last season the Spartans put together a nice run that landed them in the playoffs, but a first round departure left the players, coaching staff and fans wanting more. This season coach K.B. Criss returns only three starters from that 7-1 squad, but he is confident that if they play up to their abilities and stay healthy, they should be very competitive this year. Brogan Myers (5-8, 190, Sr.) leads the way at RB/LB. Myers rushed for 1,153 yards on 79 carries scoring 21 TDs. Cole Criss (6-0, 180, Sr.) will start at QB and DE. A two-year starter, Criss has played multiple positions during his career and if one of the more versatile players in the conference. SI Killman (6-1, 170, Sr.) has the instincts to be outstanding at TE/ OLB. Also look for Parker Rock (6-0, Sr.) at OL/LB after starting last year. Other players to watch include Jordan Alexander (6-0, 165, Sr.) at WR/DB, Darius Casebolt (5-10, 130, Sr.) at WR/DB, Xavier Strong (6-2, 200, So.) at OL/DL, Anthony Priddy (6-0, 185, Sr.) at OL/DL, Bradyn Henderson (6-0, 175, Fr.) at TE/DE and Devonte Harris (6-0, 250, Fr.) at OL/DL.

TEAM PREVIEW The Wildcats will play mostly sophomores this season, but the majority of those players received playing time last season. The two key seniors that return are fullback and linebacker Josh Smith (5-7, 165) and tight end and safety Colin Whitson (5-7, 160). If Oxford’s sophomore class can take a step forward, Burkes thinks the Wildcats can improve on the win total.

Offensively the Gorillas will look to guys like Alex Herbal (60, 160, Sr.) and Nevante Farris (5-11, 135, Jr.) at QB as well as Spencer Coup (6-0, 145, Fr.). Running back Dylan Hynes (6-1, 180, Jr.) is a returning starter with Dawson Duryea (5-10, 160, Jr.) at tackle. Defensively look for Hynes at linebacker with Jarrett Baxa (5-10, 150, Jr.) and Duryea.
Scott Robinson (5-11, 165, So.) may start in the secondary with Coup. Herbal is returning to his free safety postion. Simon Smith (6-3, 175, Jr.) will play DE with Jacob Smith (6-4, 190, Jr.). Also look for Farris at DT.

TEAM PREVIEW Consistency will be key for the Eagles as often times last season they found themselves playing well for a half then playing poorly the other half. Dylan Bishop (5-9, 215), who was an all-league first team defensive lineman, is back this season. Bishop tore his ACL last year, but Williams thinks he is ready to go. Also back on defense is threeyear starting linebacker Issac Jirak (5-10, 175). Both Bishop (running back) and Jirak (tight end) will be factors on offense. Quarterback Trent Whiteman (6-2, 155) started the final two games of the season and racked up 359 yards in those two games.

TEAM PREVIEW The Titans graduated 75 percent of their offense, so finding playmakers and signal-callers will be crucial. On the other hand, many defensive starters return including two of the top tacklers in the state in linebackers Blake Goodman (5-9, 150) and Adam Blanchat (5-9, 150). Goodman finished the season with 175 tackles and two interceptions, while Blanchat recorded 159 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions. TEAM PREVIEW There are plenty of reasons for Caldwell to be encouraged about replicating its seven-win season from last year, but two of the most important ones are Jude Stow (5-11, 140) and Trey Strnad (6-2, 195). Stow was a first team all-league defensive back and an honorable mention all-league running back, where he finished with over ten touchdowns last seasons. Strnad was a first team all-league tight end and honorable mention all-league defensive lineman. Wide receiver Dru Volvaka is also back on offense.

On offense, the Cougars will build around ends Luke Hudson (5-9, 150) and Lane Methvin (5-10, 180) and lineman Quentin Bina (6-0, 175). TEAM PREVIEW Any time a team can boast two returning players that were first team all-state last year, then they are off to a good start and that’s exactly where Hanover is. The Wildcats lost in the state semifinals last season and with a loaded roster this year, they are poised to advance to another state title game. Wide receiver Colin Jueneman (6-1, 180) and offensive lineman Jacob Klipp (6-1, 190) are Hanover’s first team all-state players coming back. Defensive lineman Carson Hamby (5-11, 170) was a first team all-league performer last season and Dawson Urwiller (5-11, 160) was an honorable mention all-league linebacker. Also back for the defense is safety Adre Ibarra (6-2, 160). All three players are crucial to the offense as well. 8-MAN DIVISION II Oct. 16 - H Rock Hills Oct. 23 - At Osborne LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 3-6 2018 – 4-5 2017 – 11-1 2016 – 10-2 2015 – 8-3
TEAM PREVIEW Pike Valley returns seven starters on both sides of the ball. With that experience, coach Miller has set a goal for this season of finishing with a winning record and making a deep run in the playoffs. The offensive and defensive lines should be a strength for the Panthers this season with guys like Ethan Benne (Sr.) returning at center. Benne was an All-District 1st Team player at center, Brennan Flavin (Sr.) was also All-District 2nd Team on the offensive line. Keaton Reeves (Jr.) returns to quarterback Pike Valley after a season that garnered him All-District honors. Also look for Daltyn Garman (Sr.) in the defensive secondary.

is Mason Higer (5-10, 185, Sr.) at RB. Higer will also play LB on defense. Caden Slate (6-1, 275, Sr.), Buck Luedke (6-0, 220, Jr.) and Kenny Sterling (5-11, 200, Sr.) will anchor the offensive line. QB Jerrod Gillett (6-0, 175, Sr.) returns for his final season. Gillett will have a nice target in Kole Vance (5-10, 205, Sr.) at tight end who will also play DE. Grant Meyers (5-9, 160, So.) is a young, but talented RB/LB to watch. Other players to look for include Davion McDonald (6-0, 165, Sr.), Jacob Barry (5-10, 160) and Conner Cosand (5-6, 155, Jr.).
RURAL VISTA HEAT
WHEAT STATE LEAGUE COACH: BRIAN HENRY, SECOND SEASON
SCHEDULE: Sep. 4 – H Solomon Sep. 11 – At Canton-Galva Sep. 18 – H Herington Sep. 25 – At Centre Oct. 2 – At Hartford Oct. 9 – H MDCV Oct. 16 – At Lebo Oct. 23 – H Wakefield LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 1-7 2018 – 1-8 2017 – 4-5 2016 – 5-4 2015 – 7-3
TEAM PREVIEW Rural Vista returns two players who made the allleague teams last season in running back Dylan Worrell (6-0, 220), who made first team and linebacker Cameron Campuzano (6-6, 245), who was an honorable mention selection. As a whole, the Heat return 11 starters from last year and of those 16 starters, 12 of them will be seniors, so there will be plenty of experience.
Oct. 9 – H Stafford Oct. 16 – At Peabody-Burns Oct. 23 – H South Barber LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 3-6 2018 – 4-5 2017 – 2-7 2016 – 2-7 2015 – 3-6
TEAM PREVIEW South Haven took a few lumps last year, but the team was very young and still fought hard in every outing. This season head coach Reese Blaylock feels his team can make some noise with the amount of returning players to the roster. “I look forward to them growing as a team,” said coach Blaylock. “Even with the issues going on, we have had way better attendance percentages at our summer weights. They are getting stronger and are ready to start the season.” Cooper Wolf (6-2, 185, Sr.) is certainly a name to look for this year. Wolf is a four-year starter at quarterback and the engine that makes the offense run. Grady Howel (6-0, 180, Jr.) is a throwback type linebacker who led the defense as a sophomore. No one is more fired up to take the field than Howel.

lineman Kleyton Schreiber (6-3, 210) who is a threeyear starter. Schreiber also plays tight end on offense. Also returning is two-year starter at running back and defensive back, Tai Hildebrand (5-6, 160). A pair of returning offensive linemen will be crucial to the execution of the offense: Aston Harter (5-8, 220) and Shawn Sheets (6-0, 210).
ST. JOHN’S-TIPTON BLUJAYS
NORTHERN PLAINS LEAGUE COACH: DEAN GENGLER, 2ND SEASON
SCHEDULE: Sep. 4 – H Sylvan/Lucas Sep. 11 – H Osborne Sep. 18 – H Thunder Ridge Sep. 25 – At Southern Cloud Oct. 2 – At Pike Valley Oct. 9 – At Onaga Oct. 16 – H Lakeside Oct. 23 – At Rock Hills LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 7-3 2018 – 5-4 2017 – 5-4 2016 – 7-3 2015 – 6-3
TEAM PREVIEW Good team speed and experience at the skill positions are strengths for the Blujays coming into the season. Head coach Dean Gengler said, “We play a difficult schedule again, facing three preseason top 10 teams in the first three weeks. We should have a pretty good idea where we are at as a team early on. We are anticipating a good season if we can avoid injury and, like everyone else, illness.” Five offensive starters are back including Brayden Perez (RB/Slot), Blake Perez (RB/Slot), Dalton Schmitt (OL), Hayden Griffin (OL), and Jaret Eitzmann (QB). On defense look for Schmitt and Griffin on the line, Cooper Jermark starts at LB with Brayden Perez and Timmy Greenwood, while Blake Perez will play in the secondary.
SCHEDULE: Sep. 4 – H Lincoln Sep. 11 – At Central Plains Sep. 18 – H Wilson Sep. 25 – At Peabody-Burns Oct. 2 – H Otis-Bison Oct. 9 – At Chase Oct. 16 – H Victoria Oct. 23 – At Sylvan-Lucas LAST 5 YEARS: 2019 – 1-8 2018 – 0-9 2017 – 1-8 2016 – 2-7 2015 – 5-4
TEAM PREVIEW Tescott will have just one senior on the roster, so the Trojans will be young and inexperienced. The lone senior, Braydon Peterson (6-0, 165), will play end on offense and safety on defense. There will be a couple of juniors who will start both ways in Michael Challans (5-8, 145) (running back and linebacker) and Garrett Phelps (6-2, 180) (offensive line and defensive line).

TEAM PREVIEW The 2020 season will be Cunningham’s second season at the six-man level and its first as a playoff eligible team. Only four players on the Wildcats’ team have more than two years of football experience, however 10 letterman return. McGuire hopes year two will be a more consistent and productive one.

Emily Whorton McPherson When Trey Harris entered his sophomore Student-athletes face all types of challenges in high school. From something as simple as keeping up with homework to things a lot more challenging such as injuries. McPherson High School student-athlete Emily Whorton faced one of those challenges last year when she injured her leg. Missing her entire sophomore year, Whorton has worked hard with the help of Advanced PT to get back to action for her junior year. Whorton is a member of the varsity basketball team where she plays guard and she’s a member of the track team competing in multiple events including the 400-meters, high jump, and the 4X400 relay. Whorton was a state qualifier in the 400 and 4X400 relay.
Advanced PT began the physical therapy process after Whorton was injured on the basketball court. It was an ordinary play, something that happens multiple times a game. When Whorton was fouled driving to the basket, a problem was revealed with the foot forcing Whorton to undergo mid-foot fusion. After a successful surgery, Whorton faced 14 months of rehab before getting a full release to participate in athletics. Whorton buckled down, faced the challenge and went to work. With the help of Advacned PT, Whorton has made huge gains and even enjoyed some of the work it took to get there. “My favorite service was regaining full mobility and balance,” said Whorton. Significant gains have been made and Whorton is hopeful she will return to the court soon.
“The biggest hope is full range of motion returning to my left foot and leg,” said Whorton. With the help of Advanced PT, McPherson family behind her and a determination to return to the sport she loves, Whorton is on track for a full recovery.
MENISCUS INJURIES Amanda Noll, PT, DPT, CSCS Of all the knee injuries, an injury to the meniscus is one of the more
common findings in athlete’s that have knee pain, especially when the pain is accompanied by a “locking” or “popping” mechanism.

DRIVE TO ZERO SENIOR SHOUTOUT Terin Rundus, Concordia Concordia High School’s Terin Rundus first got involved with the SAFE program two years ago when the student council saw a need at their school. “The program SAFE stands for Seat Belts are For Everyone, and the goal of it is to reduce vehicle-related injuries and fatalities by encouraging seat belt use and educating students,” said Rundus. “Concordia High School was faced with the stark reality that change was needed to facilitate improved safety and compliance of seatbelt laws. Two years ago, our student council advisor, Dustin Bender, applied to have the program at our school. Our application was accepted and student council members have been conducting it.” Rundus said the program has been very rewarding in many ways. From reaching new drivers to bringing awareness to the laws and rules of the road, she has enjoyed the opportunity to help her fellow students. “One of the most rewarding aspects of being a part of SAFE is seeing the improvement of students and staff wearing their seatbelts. We conduct three sections of observations, and each section consists of two consecutive days. As the observations progress, more people wear their seatbelts and are less distracted,” said Rundus. SAFE is not the only activity she’s involved in

at Concordia. Rundus also participates in Language Club, Science Club, Friends of Rachel, STUCO, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Wellness Committee. “I also participate in volleyball, basketball, and track & field,” said Rundus. After graduating from Concordia in 2021, her plans start with going to college. “After graduating from high school, I plan to attend Kansas State University and study in either the College of Health and Human Sciences or the College of Business,” said Rundus. Before her time has come to an end at Concordia, Rundus offers this sound advice to other students who may want to participate in SAFE. “It is a beneficial program that encourages and educates people to practice vehicle safety. It helps track progress, through seatbelt use, over the span of a school year. There are also
SAFE is a statewide program supported by
many incentives that can be received through the program such as prizes, speakers, and mock wrecks. For example, mock wrecks are eye opening for many students and their understanding of why it is so important to be buckled. By participating in this program, students can take comfort in knowing that they are helping to protect their family and friends.”
